RSV runs rampant in Nelson Kate Russell Reporter

kate@nelsonweekly.co.nz

Early childhood centres around Nelson are experiencing a sharp decline in attendance rates as winter illness, including the RSV

virus, tightens its grip on the region. There has been at least one confirmed case of RSV at a Nelson preschool, while others say they have had “huge” drops in children attending, whether it be due to sickness or a precaution from parents.

The RSV (respiratory syncytial virus) is a common virus that affects all age groups but is especially severe for infants less than one-year-old, for older people, and people who are immunocompromised. It is very infectious and can easily pass from person to person

through coughing and sneezing. According to figures from Nelson Marlborough Health (NMH), 128 children presented to ED with respiratory symptoms many of which are caused by viruses including RSV - between July 8 - 18. Out of this number, 23 were admitted to hospital.

Dr Nick Baker, chief medical officer for NMH, says while an increase in respiratory illness caused by viruses is normal for this time of year, these numbers represent a “substantial increase”. “Normally our community has a

high degree of herd immunity to all respiratory viruses because of constant exposure,” he says. “However, children under the age of two were not exposed to many viruses last year with the 2020 lockdowns and closed borders. This means they have had less chance to develop immunity and might be affected more by viruses.” YKids Early Childhood Centre has also reported a significant decline in attendance due to winter bugs. “We have had way more children away and we’ve sent out lots of information [on RSV] to our families,” says manager Yasna Keys.

CEO of the Nelson Tasman Kindergarten Association, Craig Vercoe, says the week prior to the school holidays, many parents were keeping their children home after NMH issued a statement, warning of the virus. “We certainly noticed a drop in attendance, parents were really taking heed of that advice.” Nelson GP spokesperson Dr Graham Loveridge says he is seeing a surge of respiratory infections amongst kids as well as adults, with a “significant number” being RSV. He is hoping the current school holidays will be a “circuit breaker” for the virus. “It does give a nasty twoweek sickness, but there is

no need to panic - for most kids, they just need to keep warm and get plenty of fluids and rest. “If they are struggling with their breathing, then that’s when we want to see them,” he says. To help protect vulnerable patients, and also staff, from catching RSV, Nelson Hospital has closed maternity wards, children’s wards and special care baby units to visitors, excluding a child’s immediate caregiver. If anyone has cold or flu symptoms, they are being asked to not visit any ward in the hospital. Those who have outpatient appointments should phone the hospital prior if they are unwell, for advice about what to do.

RSV symptoms and what to do if you have them:

RSV symptoms include a runny nose, decrease in appetite, coughing, sneezing, fever (often mild) and/or wheeze. In some cases, it can cause more serious illness such as bronchiolitis (narrowing of airways in infants) and pneumonia. • If you have RSV-like symptoms and are concerned or are getting worse, you should contact your GP or Healthline (0800 611 116) for assessment and advice • Early medical advice is especially important for those with underlying medical conditions • Do not return to childcare, school or work until your symptoms have resolved.

Calls to replace Rocks Rd seawall Jonty Dine Reporter

jonty@nelsonweekly.co.nz

The waterfront walkway on Rocks Rd suffered significant damaged due to flooding at the weekend and a Nelson city councillor is calling on Waka Kotahi to address the issue. About 20 metres of the footpath including the handrail, was damaged in the storm. Waka Kotahi system manager for Top of the South Andrew James says engineers assessed the damage on Monday, and a permanent repair is now being designed. However, will take several weeks to complete. Fulton Hogan will provide a temporary footpath on the northbound cycle path and cyclists will be merged with traffic under a 30km/hr speed restriction. Contractors have erected a temporary footpath out over the rocks, 800mm clear of the existing seawall, and linking back to onto the footpath at each end of the damage. This will be 1.2m wide with handrails either side. Construction will progress as tides and weather allow, at night when traffic volumes are lower. Replacement components for the chain link fence and bollard posts are being organised. “While the temporary cycle path is going in place and until the final repaired footpath is

Photo: Matt Lawrey. completed, we ask all drivers to be careful around Rocks Rd.” Nelson city councillor Matt Lawrey says Waka Kotahi needs to get on with replacing the sea wall as soon as possible. “Parts of the wall date back to the 1890s and leaving the job of replacing it for another decade will increase the chances of something dangerous and expensive happening, which would be disastrous.” As part of Waka Kotahi’s Nelson Future Access programme, the transport agency is proposing building a new fivemetre-wide walkway-cycleway around the waterfront with a new protective sea wall within a 10-year timeframe, depending on funding. “It’s a great plan,” says Matt. “Whatever your views are on

the future of transport in the region, we can all agree that surrendering the waterfront to the sea is not an option and if we’re going to need to build a new sea wall then we might as well build an awesome walkway-cycleway into it.” Matt says the only problem is the 10-year timeframe. “Call me crazy, but leaving it that long doesn’t strike me as a particularly good idea. This is the second time in three years that a bit of the waterfront has been smashed. Not only that but the impact of climate change means stronger, more frequent storms are on the way.” Matt says the sooner the waterfront gets the protection it deserves the sooner we will stop spending money on repairs.

Farmers take protest to streets Jonty Dine Reporter

jonty@nelsonweekly.co.nz

A hoard of tractors, utes, dogs and disgruntled farmers made noise across the country on Friday in protest of government regulations. A convoy drove from the Richmond Showgrounds to the Nelson CBD as part of a nationwide demonstration. ‘A Howl of a Protest’ was held in 20 centres across New Zealand, including Nelson. It was organised by Groundswell New Zealand, an organisation that is dedicated to reversing “unworkable regulations”.

Co-founder Bryce McKenzie says those regulations include freshwater and winter grazing, significant natural areas, indigenous biodiversity and the “ute tax” - a new rebate scheme, which would place a fee on higher-emission vehicles. Richmond coordinator Andrina Cimino lives on a lifestyle block and says she got involved because what is happening to farmers will sooner or later trickle down to lifestylers, too. She was blown away by the support shown by fellow farmers and the community. “I was astounded, it was amazing. The turnout far exceeded expectations.” Andrina was delighted at how

smoothly and peacefully the protest ran. “I loved seeing everyone work together and how people came to support each other, it was mind-blowing.” She says the highlight was the thousands of approving toots, placards and thumbs up they received along the way. “That was the best part.” As a small block farmer, Andrina felt obliged to stand up for her fellow farmers on bigger blocks. Andrina was happy that Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern acknowledged the protests via a live Facebook video. She hopes action will soon follow.

New owners for Waimea Weekly The Nelson Weekly and Waimea Weekly are now under one roof. Waimea Weekly was founded in 2005 by Richmond couple Steve Page and Jenny Bates. In the 16 years since they’ve grown the paper to be the largest circulating paper in the region and the favourite medium for local advertisers. In 2010 they launched Nelson Weekly with Andrew and Sarah Board who later took full ownership of the Nelson paper in 2016. Now Andrew and Sarah have bought a majority stake in the Waimea Weekly and merged offices with the Nelson team into a new Main Rd Stoke location. Andrew, who has taken over as managing director, says it is an exciting move for the papers but readers shouldn’t expect too many changes. The new office is located at 563 Main Road Stoke, in the old Post Office building.

Local builders win big at house of the year awards Erin Bradnock Salter Builders not only scooped the top prize at this year’s Registered Master Builders House of the Year awards, but nabbed a further four wins during last Friday’s ceremony. Salter Builders won the Supreme Award at the Nelson, Marlborough and West Coast Registered Master Builders 2021 House of the Year competition, as well as a gold award for Outdoor Living Excellence, the Resene New Home Over $2 million category and the Hubbers Flooring and Soft Furnishings Interior Design Lifestyle Award. Registered master builder and licensed building practitioner owner Trevor Salter says he’s “humbled” by the wins and the affectionate commentary from his peers. “We’re very humbled by the whole thing really, with five awards on the night it’s pretty exciting. It was a special house and a special build.”

Salter Builder’s Hoddy Rd build won the top spot at this year’s local Registered Master Builders 2021 House of the Year competition. Photo: Supplied. Trevor says he knew the house would be special as soon as he saw the design for the Redwood Valley home on Hoddy Rd. “There are several elements that make this home special, one being it makes the most of its location. Where it’s situated is on top of a hill with an estuary all around it with views three-quarters of the way around the water.” The judges agree the home has been cleverly designed to

maximise the array of views from the mountain ranges to the water. The Registered Master Builders House of the Year competition recognises the very best homes, builders, and craftsmen across New Zealand. This year the regional competition had over 347 entries across 11 regions. This is the fourth year Salter Builders have entered the awards and the first supreme

win for the team. Trevor says the breath-taking property is the result of a cohesive and motivated team including Simon Paul from JTB Architects and his foreman Vinny who, Trevor says, was able to get the best work out of everyone. “This is a really good example of when things are right between the architect, owners and builders and everyone all works really well together.”

Repair Café celebrates one-year anniversary Erin Bradnock Nelson’s ‘Silver Service’ Repair Café is celebrating its first birthday this week but, for the repair team, the work is about much more than fixing things. Founding members, friends and retirees Atje Faber, Bronwen Pelvin, Diane May and Heather Marr meet every Tuesday at Habitat for Humanity’s ReStore on Tāhunanui Dr. Together, they repair an array of household items to save them from landfills. The women are nearing their 200th repair which has been made up of hems, gloves and slippers, even performing teddy bear surgeries and doll head reattachments.

“Whatever people bring, we’ll try work it out,” says Bronwen. Repair café member Atje says the café’s philosophy is about community just as much as minimising waste. “We need to look at helping the planet as well as each other, we’re about building community.” Heather, who coined the fitting ‘Silver Service’ name, due to the team’s hair colour, agrees the social aspect of the repairs makes the work worthwhile. “We spend a lot of time talking to people, they’re a part of the process,” she says. Bronwen says they often have people leaning over their shoulders, learning to darn or sew just by watching them

work. “People just don’t have these sorts of skills anymore, especially young people.” The volunteer work doesn’t stop there. On Fridays the women spend their time knitting baby jumpers and slippers together which they donate through Plunket, St Stephens Community Church and at the ReStore. The quartet covers all things garments and sewing while ‘The Barrys’ - Barry Doig and Barry Ardern - offer electrical expertise from phones to small appliances. The team is ready for repairs at the ReStore café from 9.30am to 12.30pm and ask for a small donation that goes straight back to Habitat for Humanity.

Nelson’s Lost Projects: Next steps for the city centre Over the last five weeks, Nelson Weekly has explored five bold proposals that could have made Nelson’s central city a more vibrant, bustling, and lively hub. Church St, Montgomery Square, Kirby Lane, Rutherford Park, and a performing arts centre have all been lost to hidden costs, red tape, too much opposition, and other projects. Kate Russell gets some insight from the Nelson City Council about what the future holds for our city through its City Centre Spatial Plan, which goes out for consultation next month. Lost, but not forgotten. That is the reaction of the community when they are reminded of Nelson’s lost inner-city projects. There have been reactions of disappointment, surprise, regret - as well as sighs of relief over the last five editions of the Nelson Weekly. But where to from here? Nelson City Council’s city centre development programme lead, Alan Gray, says it all comes down to the City Centre Spatial Plan - a blueprint for Nelson City for the next three decades. “The City Centre Spatial Plan has been gifted a Māori name, Te Ara ō Whakatū - Nelson Pathways, which sums up the thinking behind the plan ... giving clear direction towards achieving a 30year vision,” he explains. The plan contains eight transformational actions to increase the number of people living and spending time in the city centre while ensuring our cultural heritage is honoured, plant life is vast, and lanes and play spaces are enhanced. While no specific projects are outlined yet, Alan says it’s an exciting step. “Imagine what the city centre

A 30-year vision is being set out for Nelson’s city centre and the public will soon get to have their say. Photo: Virginia Woolf. would feel like on a beautiful Nelson evening if 2000 people lived centrally, 1000 extra trees were planted, and this was all complmented by streets full of outdoor dining and cultural significance, places to play and relax, laneways that make walking from one

great place to another quicker and more interesting, and a linear park stretching the length of Bridge St.” He says, while 30 years may sound like a long time, some things will change quite quickly, while others will take longer.

“Some of the first things people see will likely be trialling peoplefocused scenarios that will allow us to work out what works well and what needs to be adapted.” Pre-engagement has concluded, which involved over 80 meetings with members of the community

over four months. The chair of the council’s urban development subcommittee, Judene Edgar, says changing the way we think about our city centre is a vital part of ensuring Nelson is going to meet our needs today and in the future. “We need to think about how we can respond to the changing needs of the public and business community, including getting more people to live centrally and ensuring those people can enjoy green spaces and recreation opportunities. “The plan also proposes stronger links between the city and the new Science Tech Precinct and Library Precinct, which further supports Nelson’s regeneration and revitalisation.” Consultation on the draft plan will begin in late August and run for four weeks. You’ll find hard copies at council venues, and a summary will be sent to your home, says Alan. “We’re even making sure we get copies into pubs and cafes, as there’s no better place to have a conversation about our city’s future.”

Region gets $66 million water reform sweetener Chloe Ranford Local Democracy Reporter Top of the south councils have been offered a combined $66.2 million to take part in the Government water reforms, which they can spend in areas such as housing and “community wellbeing”. Councils in Marlborough, Nelson and Tasman have been offered the money as part of Government efforts to persuade them to join the reform programme that would see four large entities created to control infrastructure for drinking water, stormwater and wastewater. It was part of a $2.5 billion sweetener put on the table by Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern during the first day of the Local Government New Zealand conference in Blenheim last week. She said most of the funds would be spent ensuring councils were “better off ” for joining the reforms, by allowing them to invest in “local government, urban development, and the wellbeing of their communities”. The remaining $500m would make sure councils were “no worse off ” while transitioning their assets to the new bodies. Just over $23m of the $2b fund would go to Marlborough, with

Nelson and Tasman receiving $20.7m and $22.5m respectively. The funding was based on both population and deprivation. Joining the reforms remains optional, but the Government has warned councils that without them household water bills could be as high as $9000 a year in 30 years. Nelson Mayor Rachel Reese told the conference she was “fairly sceptical” when she first joined the three waters steering group, but now thought the reforms would deliver “significant” opportunities for New Zealand. “I know some [mayors] have said, ‘just give us some more money, and we’ll fix the problem’. If only it was that easy. I can say to you that would be an expensive and temporary solution that our ratepayers and taxpayers, our communities cannot afford. We need a new system.” Tasman District Mayor Tim King said it was too early to say what this new incentive meant for Tasman, but it would be “factored into the discussion” the council had with ratepayers. “There’s going to have to be a lot of discussion about exactly what it means – it’s about the starting point,” he said. Cabinet papers showed Marlborough and Tasman could be split

between two water entities to align with iwi boundaries. Maps suggested Marlborough and Tasman were the only councils to have their water assets divided between two entities.

Councils at the top of the south were due to consult its residents later this year on whether it should sign its assets over to the entities, or keep them. The Government says that im-

proving the country’s water infrastructure was expected to grow the economy by between $14b and $23b over the next three decades, and create between 6000 and 9000 jobs.

A group of Nelsonians braved the cold last weekend for a midwinter swim for a good cause. The ten hearty swimmers took to icy waters at Tāhunanui Beach on Sunday and managed to raise $2000 for Kenzie’s Gift. Kenzie’s Gift are a charity supporting the mental of children, young people and families effected by serious illness of bereavement. Photo: Supplied.

Photo: Sara Hollyman. Kate Russell and Sara Hollyman While the world gets ready for Tokyo 2020, a Stoke retirement village is chasing its own version of Olympic glory. Ernest Rutherford Retirement Village is one of 41 Ryman villages across New Zealand and Australia competing in Olympics@Ryman. Kicking off in June, it is the world’s first international retirement village Olympic Games. More than 20 Ernest Rutherford residents and volunteers are taking part in swimming,

lawn bowls, cycling, relay walking, and ‘Quiznastics’, which will test the contestant’s Olympic knowledge. Ryman spokesperson Margot Boock says Ernest Rutherford residents have been able to showcase their talents, learn and try new things in a safe environment. “We’ve been stunned by the response - we knew our residents were competitive but the songs, the banter, and the enthusiasm for the event have made us realise we’ve unleashed a beast.” Ryman’s technology partner Aware Group has developed technology solutions to

connect all the villages and sports, with the bowls events using artificial intelligence and the cycle races using augmented reality technology. They will also compete in a 21.6 km relay walk wearing Fitbit technology, and special timing sensor pads will be used to time the swimming events. The village’s freshly assembled lawn bowls team have recently competed in a transTasman group, including the South Island and Melbourne. The team played a close match against a team from Charles Upham in Rangiora earlier this month.

Team member Richard Hood says the game was “very exciting”, although they lost by one point. “It was a great game. It was a very good idea of Ryman to embrace the event, it’s been good fun.” Lou Colquhoun agrees, saying it just about felt like they were playing in the actual Olympics. “We had a tremendous crowd of supporters from the village, they were all lined up around the green.” Olympics@Ryman will conclude on August 8 with a closing ceremony.

Upcycling jewellery for women in need Erin Bradnock After witnessing first-hand the life-changing work of Whakatu’s Women Refuge and the Nelson Women’s Centre, jewellery designer Rachel Greig wondered how she could give back. At the end of June, Rachel donated a total of 147 pieces of handmade jewellery to the organisations. Rachel says it was during last year’s lockdown when she watched her close friend break out of a toxic relationship that inspired her to get to work. “It was the Women’s Refuge and Nelson Women’s Centre that were instrumental in getting her and her three children out,” she says. Rachel, who owns Rose & Luna Jewellery + Beading Supplies, put the word out on her business Facebook page for broken or unloved pieces of jewellery. With over a dozen drop-offs and a “truckload” of beads, Rachel has been hard at work repurposing and designing the pieces into bespoke necklaces, bracelets, and earrings, ready to donate. “A lot of women out there are going through tough times so if I can add some joy and sparkle to their day then that’s amazing,” she says.

Manager at Nelson’s Women’s Centre Rachel Warne says the donations have been warmly received by many already. “These beautiful pieces of jewellery have been purchased and gifted by many of the women who have passed through the centre over the past couple of weeks. We have received many positive comments through social media regarding the jewellery and we cannot thank Rachel enough for her generosity and time,” she says. The Nelson Women’s Centre are a resource and support centre for all women and children in the Nelson Tasman region, offering services such as free social worker support, low-cost counselling, advocacy, and information on women’s rights. Rachel says it is feedback like this that makes the hours of work worthwhile. “I’ve had some lovely comments already, which gives me the warm fuzzies.” Rachel hopes to keep the mahi going and is preparing a set of jewellery to donate to the Nelson Cancer Society. “If people keep donating, I’ll find different charities and women’s groups to make and donate to.”

Giving kids the gift of music Kate Russell Reporter

kate@nelsonweekly.co.nz

A newly-formed trust is giving Nelson kids the gift of music. The Kids Love Music Charitable Trust is funding ‘taster’ music lessons to primary school children with the aim of planting a love of music. Tāhunanui School and Wakefield School are the first to have the lessons offered to them, and there are plans to expand to other schools. Founder Wayne Densem says he started the trust as a “way to give back” while incorporating something he is passionate about. “I started learning music when I was five or six. Music played a big part of my childhood, it kept me on track and gave me something to focus on and to achieve.” The trust supports schools by providing instruments and a music tutor - something that many families cannot afford, he says. “It’s that very embryonic stage

to get children saying, ‘I’d like to have a go at this to see if I like it’.” Trustee Annabel Boyes says it is “fundamental” that all children get the opportunity to learn an instrument. “If the thing holding them back from music lessons is the cost, then they simply won’t have that.” Tāhunanui School principal Barbara Bowen says the trust has allowed her to open music lessons up to every student. “It gives them a no-obligation taster to see if it’s their kind of thing and it gives us the stability to provide lessons, which we’re grateful for.” Students can learn either the ukulele or piano, with a music teacher coming into the school for two-and-a-half hours every week. The lessons are provided to 25 students per term and will be expanded into guitar lessons soon. She says hidden talents have been discovered, while some have gone on to play in church bands and have asked for in-

Meet the latest addition to the Nelson Marlborough Rescue Helicopter crew. Molly the beagle is 16 weeks old and belongs to Jeff Hughes, a crewperson and intensive care paramedic. “She’s pretty popular with the team at the hangar and provides a bit of stress relief,” says Jeff. “But she doesn’t come on missions with us. I’d like it if we could train her to be a search dog given her breed, but there isn’t much call for civilian search beagles here in Tasman. Well, unless it was for a missing chicken breast or a sock off the clothesline, that is.” Photo: Supplied.

struments for birthdays. “The vision is for every child to have an opportunity to learn an instrument during their time at Tāhunanui School.” Wayne says the trust now needs to raise money to keep the lessons going next year. To do this, they are holding a launch party on August 6 at The Boathouse. Tickets are $25, with all proceeds going to the trust. “It’s going to be an informal night of music and fun. We’re going to auction off some fantastic prizes, which have all been donated. “If we can raise a reasonable amount of money, that gives us a kick-start.” Annabel says they are also in need of donations of unwanted instruments. “Also, if anyone in the community who has gained a lot from music thinks they could help a student have music lessons, they can donate through our Givealittle page.” For more information on the launch and how to donate, go to www.kidslovemusic.org.nz

Trailblazing signwriting business ‘constantly evolving’ Since 1999, Cutting Edge Signs has been designing, manufacturing and installing striking signage throughout this region. Established by David Guthardt, a highly talented signwriter since the 80's, the business was bought in 2016 by his son. Matthew, who shares his father's passion for signwriting, and designer Arko Biswas. “Matthew grew up seeing his dad signwriting and began working for him as a young man, developing skills over the years and he enjoyed it,” says Arko. “Then he moved to Australia for 6 years where he worked in the

industry as a signwriter, before returning to his favourite place on earth, Nelson, and working for Gus again.” Arko, who has been in Nelson since 2004, has known Gus for many years. His background is in design – he has qualifications in communication, arts and design and worked for various design agencies over the last two decades. “I used to send

my clients to Gus at Cutting Edge Signs because of his integrity, astute advice and the quality of his work. Gus understood the changes that were happening within the industry. He was one of the first ones to introduce digital printers in the region.” Eventually Gus happened to need a designer for Cutting Edge Signs. “So, I started working here in 2014 and I got to

know Matthew closely from that time.” Since they took over the business, Matthew and Arko have not only maintained the values of Gus, but they’ve taken the organisation further. Originally located on Vanguard Street, the premises was becoming too small, so they shifted to St Vincent Street in 2017. Since then, the duo has

grown the business, focussing on their existing clients and gaining more business through word of mouth, networking and doing the job right. “Our philosophy is that we never compromise our quality to do a cheap job,” says Arko. “We always advise the client what works best and that often saves them money, too.” Matthew and Arko have a ‘really

amazing team.’ “It’s a fantastic atmosphere – we love coming to work each day and we love them like friends and family.” The team of skilled signwriters and qualified designers cover the full spectrum of work from basic designing to bespoke installations. “Some of our bigger clients are the two councils, Pic’s, Nelson Airport, Port Nelson, NPD, Russells Curtains, DOC and Nelson Provincial Museum. Matthew does a lot of project management too, which requires a lot of liaising with clients and various trades.” Cutting Edge specialises in a range of services from the initial design to the full production and installation of outdoor and indoor signs, 3D graphics, flags, vehicles and boat wraps and digital signage. “We produce most of these ourselves, so we have designers, installers, Led light specialists, digital sign specialists, CNC router, 3D printer and so on.” Currently, Cutting Edge Signs is also offering their cherry-picker free for a day when they are do-

ing your installation, and they offer a complimentary courtesy car, too. The signwriting industry is ‘ever-changing,’ so the company is investing substantially in digital technology. “We’re developing our own platform for a digital, interactive wayfinding system which goes way beyond traditional platforms. So, watch this space!” Cutting Edge Media is the digital wing of the company. Through Cutting Edge Media you can buy or rent digitals screens for your business. Their popular 4K 55” standalone kiosks are a winner at tradeshows. These only cost from $65 for a day and can play videos, slides and sound. These kiosks can also be custom branded. They grab the attention that traditional pullup banners cannot. Cutting Edge Signs also provides a cutting edge finance solution to small businesses so that they do not have to compromise either on their signage or their cash flow. The business gives priority to their commitment towards community and environment. “A lot of our products are becoming

We’re a certified carbon-positive operation, reducing and recycling as much as possible and offsetting any remainders with carbon credits. “We try to reuse and give away all excess materials and offcuts to schools and com-

munity organisations.” “My mum works with kids on the spectrum,” says Matthew. “They absolutely love what we give them – it lets them be creative.” Reusing the excess materials and offcuts also extends the lifespan of the materials.

Cutting Edge also supports a lot of community-based organisations. “We are one of the official supporters of the Brook Sanctuary, and we also support fantastic initiatives like Community Compost and Nelson Youth Theatre.” They can also lend you their gazebo for a charity event! During lockdown, instead of selling the Covid stickers, Cutting Edge took the initiative to print and distribute over 190 free Covid posters and stickers for local businesses. Health, safety and well-being is of utmost importance. “Every year, since 2017, we have achieved a green certificate from Sitewise, which is the highest possible achievement,” says Matthew. “The safety and wellbeing of our team, our clients and members of public around us when we are working is something we never compromise.” Cutting Edge Signs is not just profit-driven business, they are responsibility driven. “We are constantly evolving as a business and are learning every day from our clients, our suppliers and our staff,” says Arko.

Kids love The Little E – it’s an awesome, electric balance-bike that has been designed specifically for children. Available in green, red, blue and black, The Little E is the perfect way for children aged 2 to 6 years to build confidence on two wheels. The youngest ones can use the bike without power, like a regular balancebike. Then when they're 3 or 4, the lowest speed setting (8 kmph) lets them get used to the throttle and start using the electric power. When they're 5 or 6, you can switch to the higher speed setting (16kmph) and they'll have a whole lot of fun. By the time they're ready to move on to their next bike, the Little E will have helped them develop confidence and skills for that next stage. *Spare (generic non-LG) battery avail-

Erin Bradnock Electro-pop duo Neon Cowboys are gearing up for their first EP release party next month at East Street. Singer songwriter Keeli Ferris and award-winning producer Ryan Beehre, known from the electronic band Minuit, released their first EP Paradise together last month. Keeli says most of the EP’s songwriting took place during lockdown last year. “I think it’s got a bit of heartache, it’s a bit melancholy. I write about real-life experiences friendships, relationships. It’s like a diary but with music,” she says. The duo has also released a music video for their leading song Lonely Night, detailing a lockdown breakup and subsequent heartache. “It was the best experience, we shot it at Ryan’s place. I’d never done something like that before,” she says. Keeli has been singing and writing since her Garin College days - a time where the school was producing many talented musicians. “Broods lead singer was in the year above me and Anna Robinson was the year below. I think I felt quite intimidated at the time.” Keeli took a break from music in the years following high school when she moved to Melbourne, but her love of music wasn’t easy for her to shake off. “I wasn’t doing the things that made me happy. I felt like I was missing a big part of my identity,” she says. Keeli found music again once she moved back home and began producing music with Ryan. “We found we got along really well and merged everything together. We had our debut gig on New Year’s Eve at the Church Steps which kicked it all off,” she says. The name Neon Cowboys is the result of a compromise between bandmate suggestions “Funky Cowboys” from Keeli and “Neon Junkies” from Ryan. The duo has an upcoming gig at East Street next month on August 28. To hear the duo, you can visit their Facebook page, Neon Cowboys.

Operating locally since 1964, the company is Nelson’s longest established property consultancy practise. “Our property valuers offer a wide range of valuation and property consultancy services in the Nelson and Tasman regions.” Duke & Cooke is approved by all major banking institutions and insurance companies, and is Quality Assured accredited, assuring the quality of their valuation advice. “There are 11 staff in our team, with three of us doing residential valuations,” says Barry. “Sandy and I do most of these valuations and James does a mixture of commercial and residential.” They are assisted by their totally dependable and ultrareliable PA, Aimee Lewis. A Registered Valuer, Barry specialises in residential and rural lifestyle properties. He has 35 years’ experience and maintains a detailed knowledge of current values and trends in these markets. Sandy, who

is also a Registered Valuer, has 27 years of property-related experience over a range of different property types. She has lived and worked in various locations in the North Island as well as Geraldine, Christchurch, the UK and Australia. She has also worked as a Domestic Energy Assessor and as a Loss Adjustor for EQC after the Christchurch earthquakes. James Sandston is a Registered Valuer specialising in residential and commercial property. Prior to joining Duke & Cooke in 2019, James worked in Whanganui for four years. The Duke & Cooke team are the most experienced valuers in Nelson. “We have been going the longest, have the most experienced valuers, and have established a very good reputation.” Barry says Nelson’s housing market is ‘really buoyant’ at the moment and we are constantly striving to keep up with market activity. Nevertheless, they are committed to delivering accurate valuations within the required timeframe. Clients can easily provide instructions to the valuers at Duke & Cooke. “Most of our work is done via email or phone. We just take their instructions and their contact details, ascertain what bank it’s for, and how to access the property for the inspection.”

Meet your new Mako Jonty Dine

The Tasman Mako have named five new faces for its 2021 squad, four from the Nelson club rugby ranks. The dominance of the Mako in recent years, which includes back-to-back

premiership titles, has got the attention of the All Blacks. David Havili, Sevu Reece, Will Jordan, Ethan Blackadder, Shannon Frizell, Tyrel Lomax have all been selected in the top national side over the last several years.

Max Hicks has been a standout in the second row during Marist’s recent success. Max is a reliable lineout target and extremely mobile around the park for a man of his size, scoring a number of spectacular tries. Photos: Shuttersport.

Taine Robinson is a Nelson College old boy and Collingwood local who has been steering the ship for Stoke this season.

Waimea Old Boys first five Campbell Parata has been rewarded for his excellent form in the past three seasons which has seen him land a number of clutch kicks at goal and frequently featuring at the top of the point scoring charts.

Antonio Shalfoon will be a significant part of the Tasman Mako engine room this year. The Stoke captain has an immense work rate in a career that has been plagued with injury.

Olympic legend leaves legacy Jonty Dine Reporter

jonty@nelsonweekly.co.nz

New Zealand’s oldest Olympian, Ngaire Galloway, has passed away at age 95. Ngaire competed in the 1948 Olympic Games in London as the only female in the New Zealand team. The swimmer came second in her 100m backstroke heat, seventh in her semi-final, and finished 11th overall. She even took home a bronze medal as the Australasian team finished third in the 4 x 100m freestyle relay. Nelson Weekly was lucky enough to interview Ngaire in 2018 at her Nelson rest home. Then, she recalled training in a makeshift pool which resembled a bathtub on board the ship during the six-week voyage to London. She said post war London was a solemn scene. “Whole blocks had been knocked out, I sprained my ankle two or three times just walking on the path.” She had to stay separately from the six men in the team. And such was the protocol of the

Ngaire Galloway with her granddaughter Gina Galloway in 2018. Photo: Shuttersport. particular time, she had to have her own chaperone. Ngaire said she had vivid memories walking into the stadium in London. “I remember huge nervousness, then the men from the New Zealand team stood up and did a haka in the stands.” She said it brought a few tears to her eye.

“It nearly ended me before I started.” Ngaire’s granddaughter Gina Galloway had a special bond with her Nana over their shared passion for the pool. Gina was a member of the New Zealand team at the Buenos Aires 2018 Youth Olympic Games in October and has even managed to break half a dozen records that

‘Nana Ngaire’ set. Ngaire was still swimming 30 lengths of her local pool every second day right up until about four years ago. “I have always had a passion and love for swimming,” she said. Gina and her younger brother Mark visited Ngaire a few weeks before her passing as they knew her time was coming to an end.

“It was very special spending the morning with her, and we celebrated the amazing and wonderful life Nana had.” Gina says they were both so impressed by her brilliant mind as all the memories that were still there, and she also shared some new ones. “Mark’s particular favourite is of her invitation to Buckingham Palace after the Olympics,” she says. “We only learnt of this when we saw her for the last time, only four members from each country were invited for a high tea with the Royal Family and she was one of the athletes invited to attend.” Ngaire vividly remembered being picked up at her hotel by Sir Arthur Porritt and how the late King George VI was very interested in her performance. Gina says her Nana had an incredible ability to capture many historical events that she lived through which allowed them a glimpse into her iridescent life. “I will always remember the unconditional love she had for all 12 of her grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren.” Gina says Ngaire made an impact on many people in Nelson and the wider community.

John Masters celebrated his 76th birthday last week not with champagne and cake, but with a 102km cycle. It was the 477th straight day John has spent on his bike, racking up over 13000km. John’s cycling journey has given him a new lease on life which was nearly lost at sea back in 2005. The former sailor had to be winced to safety off the Chatham Islands in one of the biggest rescue missions ever mounted off New Zealand. John was crewing a yacht on the 11000km Buenos Aires to Wellington leg of the round-theworld race. A rogue wave on Boxing Day threw John across the boat with the impact against the bulkhead resulting in perforated intestines. “The guys on the boat didn’t think I was going to make it.” More than 100 people were involved in the eight-day rescue, which was complicated by a lack of fuel on the Chathams and very rough conditions. John eventually made it to Wellington, not on

a yacht but in a rescue helicopter. He lost “quite a few feet” of internal organs and his dream of sailing around the world, though he was alive when the odds had been stacked against him. John shows the same strength in his new sport that he needed to survive in the cold of the Southern Ocean. “It becomes a discipline and routine - I don’t have to get up and go to work anymore, so I get up and go for a bike.” John’s first cycle came during the national lockdown on March 24. “We were allowed to do exercise within 2km of our homes, so I set up a little circuit.” Starting with a 20km ride, John has progressed to a total of 13,623 with his 500th straight day set for August 6. So committed to his regime, John will check for a window of clear weather to ensure he gets out every day, one which came at 2.30am in the morning. The work is paying off too as John has seen a significant reduction in cholesterol and lost 13kg. John has no immediate plans to end his impressive cycling streak. “I see no reason why I would stop - I would need a really good ex- At 76, John Masters is cycling close to 100km a cuse.” week. Out Of Zone Enrolment Applications

siTUaTiOns VaCanT pUBliC nOTiCe

The Clifton Terrace School Board of Trustees invites applications from parents who wish to enrol their sons and daughters for 2021/22 who live outside the enrolment zone. Enrolment at the school is governed by an enrolment scheme, details of which are available on the school website www.cliftontce.school.nz. Families who wish to apply should do so in writing addressed to Rob Wemyss stating the child’s full name, date of birth and current address. The deadline for receipt of applications for out-of-zone places is Fri 30 July. Parents of students who live within the home zone should also apply by this date to assist the school to plan appropriately for next year. The board has determined that 10 places are likely to be available for out-of- zone students for the next year. Preference will be given to those in the Year 1- 3 age group (those born 2013 - 2017). The exact number of places will depend on the number of applications received from students who live within the school’s home zone. Please note that other age groups will be considered as well. If the number of out-of-zone applications exceeds the number of places available, students will be selected by ballot. If a ballot is required it will be held on Fri 6 August 2021. Parents will be informed of the outcome of the ballot within three school days of the ballot being held. Rob Wemyss Principal CliftonTerrace School

Valued Team brings Wealth of Experience

Three years ago, Brendon and Rochelle Mathews first opened The Bike Station in central Nelson and today the vibrant, expanding business has fantastic stock and a passionate, experienced team. Rochelle says contrary to what some may think, Ebikes aren’t a lazy option. “Ours are pedal-electric, so you still have to pedal but you get assistance as

you need it, so they’re suited to anyone, including those with a medical condition. “Using an E-bike allows me to get uphill quickly and ride for longer. They’re great enablers. I can do a

Staff are a massive part of The Bike Station. “Without them, we wouldn’t be here today,” Rochelle says. From the outset, Brendon and Rochelle have been focussed on having high-quality staff and, because they all have significant experience with bikes, the couple have 100% faith in their ability to provide fantastic service. Yohann, who is from the UK, says, “It’s been useful to experience how bike shops operate in other countries, including New Zealand. I picked Nelson because of its awesome mountainbiking trails and The Bike Station had cool brands, a nice workshop and it’s a great place to work.” Meanwhile, two-time national track cycling champion and national record

holder Kaio, loves working at The Bike Station while teaching young bike enthusiasts (in schools) how to ride and it helps build up the local junior base. Hunter, who has recently left college has been working fulltime at the store since November last year. “I’ve done a lot of mountainbike racing, so my passion has inspired me to work here as a bike mechanic and be part of the mountainbiking community. It’s an awesome business and getting to work on bikes all day long is great.” Lindsay, who has been with The Bike Station for just under two years, says he had been looking to get back into the bike industry as a mechanic after a stint in Whistler, Canada. “This is a nice place to work; a good bunch of guys. They have the same kind of passion that I have for mountainbiking, so it’s a no-brainer really.” Finally, Sam began working for the business in December after moving from Auckland. “I started as a customer and ended up working here; I love the team; we all get on well. It’s always a good sign of a great workplace
