A Tapawera farmer says they were well prepared for the rain over the weekend but there was nothing they could do to stop the devastation the flood caused.

David McGaveston has farmed the area for years and says high levels of gravel in the Motueka River has caused the river to “zig zag” and it is at the right angles to allow it it to “jump its banks and destroy farmland”. “The riverbed is so full of gravel. It can’t carry the volume of water

in a flood of this magnitude,” he says. David acknowledges there will always be floods but would like to see the Tasman District Council remove gravel to increase the river’s capacity. He says he has been asking for this for a long time.

David says both homes and farms in the Tapawera region were affected over the weekend, with water flowing through hop farms and bringing down fences. “My son and wife were in tears. They can’t afford to replace all the fences.” Tasman District Council com-

munications and change manager Chris Choat says in June council issued a permit for the removal of 2000 cubic metres of gravel in this section of river, and most of this was removed in the last month.

Farmers take protest to streets Jonty Dine

A hoard of tractors, utes, dogs and disgruntled farmers made noise across the country on Friday in protest of government regulations. A convoy drove from the Richmond Showgrounds to the Nelson CBD as part of a nationwide demonstration. ‘A Howl of a Protest’ was held in 20 centres across New Zealand, including Nelson. It was organised by Groundswell New Zealand, an organisation that is dedicated to reversing “unworkable regulations”. Co-founder Bryce McKenzie says those regulations include freshwater and winter grazing, significant natural areas, indigenous biodiversity and the “ute tax” - a new rebate scheme, which would place a fee on

higher-emission vehicles. Richmond coordinator Andrina Cimino lives on a lifestyle block and says she got involved because what is happening to farmers will sooner or later trickle down to lifestylers, too. She was blown away by the support shown by fellow farmers and the community. “I was astounded, it was amazing. The turnout far exceeded expectations.” Andrina was delighted at how smoothly and peacefully the protest ran. “I loved seeing everyone work together and how people came to support each other, it was mindblowing.” She says the highlight was the thousands of approving toots, placards and thumbs up they received along the way. “That was the best part.”

Drenched, but a lucky escape fROm PAGE 1 “We also have plans to issue further permits in the coming months.” Chris says that engineers will be reviewing sites following the floods that struck over the weekend. A farmer at Lake Rotoiti, who didn’t want to be named, says the high levels of gravel are a big problem for them too. She was unsure of the total extent of the destruction on Monday as the waters hadn’t fully receded but, with the Buller River running through her property, knows there will be some damage. Tarsh Newport from the Korere Tophouse area says waterflow down the Motu-

piko was fierce. “We have lost riverside land which will need major repairs to retain future land loss. “We also lost stock which was gutting.” Murchison farmer Brendan Lochhead says that while two thirds of his farm was under water, the animals were fine. He says the river turned away from his farm so, while there were broken fences and sand, there wasn’t a lot of silt. Murchison community council’s Simon Blackmore says the township fared alright, with a bit of flooding at Neds Creek. The Tasman District Council recently finished flood protection work behind the

rec centre and Simon says this was a big improvement which meant there was no flooding in the upper part of Hampden Street. Fire and Emergency New Zealand (FENZ) shift manager Andrew Norris says it was a busy weekend with crews from the area deployed to weather related incidents. On State Highway 6 near Hinehaka Road a loader was used to access a person stranded and sitting on the roof of their car. FENZ was called by a family trying to evacuate in Glenrae. Quake threat prompts community meeting Jenny Nicholson Reporter

jenny@waimeaweekly.co.nz

Wakefield’s response to a probable Alpine Fault rupture in the next 50 years is one of four topics up for discussion in a meeting to be held in the township this month. According to Wakefield Volunteer Fire Brigade chief, Fritz Buckendahl, while the faultline doesn’t run directly through Wakefield, it could still cause major disruptions to infrastructure. Roading, power, water, sewer, and bridges

could all be impacted. “If the Brightwater and Appleby bridges were out getting help from Richmond and Nelson would be difficult,” says Fritz. With half Wakefield’s population working or going to school in Richmond or Nelson between 7 am and 6 pm, families need two plans in place. Fritz says that if there is an earthquake, they would hope it would be between 6 pm and 7 am when families are together. But if there is a big scale event during the day parents need a plan for where their children

could go if they couldn’t get to them. Fritz also sees many positives. Wakefield not only has a medical centre, chemist, supermarket, fire station and petrol station, local farms are also added resource with the machinery available. The meeting will look at lessons learnt from the 2019 Pigeon Valley fires, give information on the Covid-19 vaccine roll out. The meeting will be held at The Anglican Church auditorium at 120 Edward Street from 7 pm to 9 pm on Thursday 29 July.

Demand still outstripping property supply Jenny Nicholson Reporter

jenny@waimeaweekly.co.nz

Demand continues to outstrip supply in both private and commercial property in the region, according to local estate agents. With a change in taxation laws, Dennis Christian of Bayley’s. says they are seeing an increased interest in commercial property. Planning for 100 business units in Lower Queen Street is well under way and Dennis says there is a lot of interest from both owner-operators and investors. “With a change in taxation laws, investors are seeing real advantages in commercial property where they can still claim interest and depreciation.” Meanwhile, fellow agent Grant Chaney says there is still a shortage of homes for sale, with strong interest being shown early after listings.

The Real Estate Institute of New Zealand (REINZ) figures for June showed a slight drop in median price in the region over the past month. However, Grant says month-on-month figures can be skewed due to the limited number of sales. REINZ figures show Tasman house prices have risen over 25 per cent in the past year to $815,000, with volume of sales also increasing. The current days-to-sell of 28 days is lower than the 10-year average for June of 38 days. “Some buyers are looking to secure property in the region for future planning or those who have relocated to the region for work,” says REINZ CEO Jen Baird. She says that house price rises have continued to defy expectations with every region in the country seeing an uplift in median house prices compared to the same time last year.

Staking claim on saving bamboo Julie Newell and Caleb Eason using the recycled stakes to plant native trees near Rabbit Island. Photo: Jenny Nicholson. Jenny Nicholson More than 200,000 bamboo stakes that would previously have gone up in smoke, are now being recycled. Battle for the Banded Rail’s (B4BR) Kathryn Brownlie says recycling the stakes started from the need of her group to keep costs down. Part of the group’s work is planting habitats for local birds, and they

use plant guards to avoid the plants being eaten by rabbits or pulled out by pukeko. These guards need stakes and Kathryn approached Waimea Nurseries who happily donated the used canes. Waimea Nurseries’ field tree production manager Sam Townsend says the business has been donating used canes for the last five years. “It’s turned into this really

big thing that we’re keen to support,” says Sam. The stakes are only used by the nursery for two years, then becoming too brittle and snapping on their bigger trees. “So that’s when we would normally just put them on fire piles.” Waimea Inlet restoration project manager Julie Newell had been buying stakes but is now able to use the recycled ones as

part of Tasman Environmental Trust’s planting of 70,000 trees over three years. Kathryn is enthusiastic about the range of savings from recycling. “We’re saving all these community groups from having to buy stakes - some of the smaller ones are telling me they’ve been quoted 30 cents per stake ... at 30 cents times 200,000 we’re talking $60,000 savings.”

Richmond’s Sarah McGregor is leading the team that will host the biggest weekend on New Zealand’s photography calendar. Sarah’s photography journey started when she wanted new-born photos of her second child and found the only supplier in the market had closed. Seeing a gap, she bought a camera and started Mini Me, her business that focuses largely on new-born and family photography, along with business headshots. Now the executive director of the New Zealand Institute of Professional Photography (NZIPP), Sarah is thrilled to have the annual Iris Professional Photography Awards and the New Zealand Photography Show in Nelson this year. “We are able to offer enthusiasts, professionals and the general public five days of inspiration, education and bringing people together, through an amazing speaker line-up, workshops, live shoots, demonstrations, the

The annual Nikon Iris Awards, with live judging taking place across three days, are open to the public to come and watch as the judging happens. This runs from 8am to 5.30pm from Monday 26 - Wednesday 28 July. “This is an excellent way for photographers to learn and grow in their work, even if they have not entered. Simply watching and listening to the feedback given is an excellent resource for all photographers, regardless of their photography skills and experience,” says Sarah. There workshops and the opportunity to get a new headshot taken by a professional. The open evening is from 6pm to 8pm on 28 July at the Trafalgar Centre.

Mental health boost for schools Jo Kent Reporter

jo@waimeaweekly.co.nz

We ask kids to pay attention, but we don’t teach them how, says Grant Rix, founder of the Pause Breathe Smile initiative. The mindfulness-based wellbeing programme has just been taken on by Brightwater School to teach children as young as five to better manage their mental welfare. Grant says learning these skills from a young age equips kids with techniques to better regulate attention, to learn to recognise difficult emotions so that they can better manage them, and to learn to cultivate positive ones such as kindness, empathy and compassion. “Research shows that the promotion and development of these types of skills at a young age is likely to be one of our best defences against the onset of potential mental health problems as kids grow up, while also helping children to thrive now.” Originally developed at the Mental Health Foundation, Pause Breathe Smile aims to help kids navigate life’s challenges using a holistic approach. Brightwater School is one of the

Photo: Supplied. region’s first schools to jump on board the programme, with all staff members undergoing training in March. Deputy principal Glenda Earle says the school saw it as an opportunity to support student wellbeing in the classroom and have now implemented it across the entire school. Physical techniques, such as a se-

ries of movements linking breath with body to help calm and settle fidgety children, is one of the practices taught. Grant says the movements act as a lead-in to mindful breathing which helps the nervous system to self-regulate, calm and destress, while strengthening the children’s ability to notice and pay attention in class.

“It really helps you focus on your breathing,” says student Cooper Woodhouse. Glenda says that depending on the age and stage of the pupil, the scientific explanation of what is happening in their brain is explained to them, so they can work out how and why they react in certain ways. “Across the country, the scheme

has helped 67,000 children in Years 0-8 and that number is due to grow. “Now that Southern Cross are funding the programme, it’s free for any primary or intermediate school in New Zealand,” says Glenda. Tasman School and Lake Rotoiti School are due to undergo teacher training at the end of the year.

An 80-year-old mandolin has been on quite the journey before ending up at a Brightwater workshop for restoration. The wooden instrument was bought in Europe during the 1940s by Charlie Wilson, a sergeant in the army. He served in Italy and the Middle East before returning to New Zealand to his family and daughter Glenis Telfer. When Charlie got back from the war, he’d sing to his family. “He used to play it around the house, singing songs from the war time,” says Adrian, Glenis’s husband. “Then a couple of strings bust, and no one really played it after that.” Years later, it was out for Glenis’ mother’s 80th birthday party and somebody stood on the neck of it. “That’s how it got broken, it was an accident. One of those unfortunate things,” Adrian says. As the mandolin is a family heirloom, the couple thought they would get it restored.

Zane Elliott Before I came back to local church ministry I served as a chaplain in the New Zealand Army for six years. During my time in uniform, I moved between different army units. The most challenging move was from a logistics battalion to an infantry battalion. I knew that they had significantly different roles and ways of operating. As I prepared for the shift I wondered ‘what will this unit be like? What’s the culture?’ Moving to a new district for ministry has had me asking the same questions, not of a military unit, but of the local churches; ‘what will they be like? What’s the culture?’ It has been a great discovery to find that there is a culture of unity among the churches here. That might surprise you as a reader. I know in my own experience that, to our shame, the Christian church doesn’t always live out this characteristic. We often fall short of the way we are encouraged to work together in unity. So, as the new kid on the block, it has been a real encouragement to see that the different ministers and pastors here in Richmond and Waimea are working really hard to learn from our mistakes, and to work together to serve our community, and to share what we think is the best news ever; that God loves us, and that through Jesus we can be reconciled to God, and each other.

Meet the Moonlight family Ruth Russ

Elizabeth Gaukrodger was born in 1838 in Yorkshire, daughter of Charles and Mary and the sister of William and John. They all came to Nelson and settled near Wakefield, where Charles and Mary were proprietors of an accommodation house at Foxhill. Elizabeth was in her twenties when she met George Fairweather Moonlight: a Scottish goldminer who always wore a Crimean shirt, knee breeches, Wellington boots and a brightly-coloured sash. He also spoke with an American accent and used American phrases, having jumped ship at age 16 and spent six years in the California gold rush. He had come to the southern hemisphere in 1854 to the Victorian goldfields in

Australia, and later to Otago. Moonlight had gained a reputation as a successful prospector. He and his small party of friends often had to keep quiet and hidden as people tended to try to follow them. A tributary of the Shotover River was, for a while, named Moonlight Creek. In May 1863, he arrived in Nelson and set out along the partially formed road toward the Buller. There Moonlight and his party worked the ground. He named the Rappahannock and Shenandoah tributaries after rivers in Virginia. After stints in Marlborough and the West Coast, Moonlight returned to Nelson and married Elizabeth Gaukrodger at St John’s church in Wakefield on 28 February 1865. He leased the White Hart

Hotel and began a coaching business between the hotel and Nelson. Elizabeth gave birth to two

and Maruia rivers. Elizabeth joined him with the children the next year, where they kept a store. In 1878 they purchased the Commercial Hotel, but unfortunately, just a couple of months later, a flood damaged all of their holdings. Sadly, in 1882 Elizabeth caught typhoid. Moonlight sent her to Nelson for medical help, but she died two weeks later. Only a year later, Moonlight went into liquidation. He took up his old ways and went prospecting for gold. He went missing one evening and died from exposure. He was 55-years-old. A monument was placed at the graves of Moonlight and Elizabeth, for their “unwearying energy, perseverance, and self-sacrifice”…in developing a local gold-mining industry.

Students care for local water Jenny Nicholson Reporter

jenny@waimeaweekly.co.nz

It’s hoped that a recent school trip wasn’t just a fun day but that it will change the future by teaching students how to care for local waterways. Tapawera School students joined Whitebait Connection to investigate water quality in their local community. Whitebait Connection’s aim is to see schools and community groups actively involved in stream and catchment restoration in their local communities. “It was an awesome opportunity to learn about whitebait, freshwater and how to be a freshwater scientist. I learnt that whitebait need a good freshwater ecosystem to survive,” says student Grace McGaveston. Groups went to the Tadmore Bridge to monitor water. A test for nitrates revealed a surprisingly low level. While there was speculation it would be higher due to farms in the area, Melanie

McColgan from the Whitebait Connection says it was a pleasant surprise. Students also tested the Motueka River, which again was better than expected. One indication of good water is a diverse range of macro invertebrates, and they were present. Next, they tested a stream at Brookfield, a local farm. Studies here were a little more inconclusive due to recent rainfall. Tapawera Area School students are also raising native plants from seed to plant at Brookfields to protect the stream. A cold temperature is one of the indicators of good water, and where there is no shade next to the river, the water temperature rises. The plants the students are to plant will help keep the water cold. Teacher Janeen Strawbridge says the Whitebait Connection has enabled students to learn more about how to look after local ecosystems. “They are now aware of the species living in our rivers and ways to protect our rivers.”

around the Richmond area. “In recent years we have seen an increase in the amount of traffic and businesses using local roads within Richmond and an increase in commercial vehicles passing through to Nelson and freight going to the Port. “The business case looks to address these issues, while ensuring the cycling and walking paths, roads, and public transport can deal with this growth, so Richmond is a more connected place that is easy to live in and travel around,” she says. Tasman District Council’s Community Infrastructure Manager Richard Kirby says

Waimea Weekly Locally Owned and Operated

Richmond is one of the fastest growing towns in the country. “As we grow and evolve from being a rural support town not that long ago to being one of the fastest growing urban areas we need to take account of the transportation choices available to people.” Feedback on the business case is open until Friday 13 August. Drop-in sessions are being held on Thursday 29 July at Waimea College from 4pm – 8pm; Saturday 31 July at Richmond Mall from 9am – 2pm; Tuesday 3 August at Richmond Library from 9.30am – 4pm; Saturday 7 August at Connings Food Market from 9am - 2pm.

Rotary president having fun while she serves Jenny Nicholson Service before self is the motto of the Rotary Club of Richmond, but fun and friendship are also the focus of incoming president Diana Wilkens. When Diana retired six years ago, she returned to New Zealand after 40 years running a business in Sydney. Buying an old villa in Wakefield kept her busy the first year and she says she was a labourer and landscaping apprentice. But once she had finished that she found herself “twiddling her thumbs” and it was then that she was introduced to Rotary. “I didn’t have friends when I arrived in Nelson and Rotary has given me good friends,” she says. “I’d love to see ex-pats with time on their hands join us.” In 2018 and 2019 she helped manage the Nelson Wine and Food Festival and hopes that they will be able to run the event again in 2023. Her personal involvement with Helping Families, a local charity supporting families with essentials needed to raise children, led to her Rotary involvement. Along with refurbishing and painting containers, Rotary is filling the Helping Families volunteer roster each Tuesday. They are also due to build a deck for the charity. Rotary Richmond will continue with

Outgoing Rotary Richmond president Debra Gibbs and new president Diana Wilkens both love the fun the Rotary group has and are happy to get their hands dirty as they serve the community. Both Diana and Debra want the com-

munity to know that Rotary is not just for men, and while they are busy with service projects they also meet once and week and have frequent social Property outings. Management Ltd | MREINZ For more information, please phone 0274 413 300.

Trailblazing signwriting business ‘constantly evolving’ Since 1999, Cutting Edge Signs has been designing, manufacturing and installing striking signage throughout this region. Established by David Guthardt, a highly talented signwriter since the 80's, the business was bought in 2016 by his son. Matthew, who shares his father's passion for signwriting, and designer Arko Biswas. “Matthew grew up seeing his dad signwriting and began working for him as a young man, developing skills over the years and he enjoyed it,” says Arko. “Then he moved to Australia for 6 years where he worked in the

industry as a signwriter, before returning to his favourite place on earth, Nelson, and working for Gus again.” Arko, who has been in Nelson since 2004, has known Gus for many years. His background is in design – he has qualifications in communication, arts and design and worked for various design agencies over the last two decades. “I used to send

my clients to Gus at Cutting Edge Signs because of his integrity, astute advice and the quality of his work. Gus understood the changes that were happening within the industry. He was one of the first ones to introduce digital printers in the region.” Eventually Gus happened to need a designer for Cutting Edge Signs. “So, I started working here in 2014 and I got to

know Matthew closely from that time.” Since they took over the business, Matthew and Arko have not only maintained the values of Gus, but they’ve taken the organisation further. Originally located on Vanguard Street, the premises was becoming too small, so they shifted to St Vincent Street in 2017. Since then, the duo has

grown the business, focussing on their existing clients and gaining more business through word of mouth, networking and doing the job right. “Our philosophy is that we never compromise our quality to do a cheap job,” says Arko. “We always advise the client what works best and that often saves them money, too.” Matthew and Arko have a ‘really

amazing team.’ “It’s a fantastic atmosphere – we love coming to work each day and we love them like friends and family.” The team of skilled signwriters and qualified designers cover the full spectrum of work from basic designing to bespoke installations. “Some of our bigger clients are the two councils, Pic’s, Nelson Airport, Port Nelson, NPD, Russells Curtains, DOC and Nelson Provincial Museum. Matthew does a lot of project management too, which requires a lot of liaising with clients and various trades.” Cutting Edge specialises in a range of services from the initial design to the full production and installation of outdoor and indoor signs, 3D graphics, flags, vehicles and boat wraps and digital signage. “We produce most of these ourselves, so we have designers, installers, Led light specialists, digital sign specialists, CNC router, 3D printer and so on.” Currently, Cutting Edge Signs is also offering their cherry-picker free for a day when they are do-

ing your installation, and they offer a complimentary courtesy car, too. The signwriting industry is ‘ever-changing,’ so the company is investing substantially in digital technology. “We’re developing our own platform for a digital, interactive wayfinding system which goes way beyond traditional platforms. So, watch this space!” Cutting Edge Media is the digital wing of the company. Through Cutting Edge Media you can buy or rent digitals screens for your business. Their popular 4K 55” standalone kiosks are a winner at tradeshows. These only cost from $65 for a day and can play videos, slides and sound. These kiosks can also be custom branded. They grab the attention that traditional pullup banners cannot. Cutting Edge Signs also provides a cutting edge finance solution to small businesses so that they do not have to compromise either on their signage or their cash flow. The business gives priority to their commitment towards community and environment. “A lot of our products are becoming

We’re a certified carbon-positive operation, reducing and recycling as much as possible and offsetting any remainders with carbon credits. “We try to reuse and give away all excess materials and offcuts to schools and com-

munity organisations.” “My mum works with kids on the spectrum,” says Matthew. “They absolutely love what we give them – it lets them be creative.” Reusing the excess materials and offcuts also extends the lifespan of the materials.

Cutting Edge also supports a lot of community-based organisations. “We are one of the official supporters of the Brook Sanctuary, and we also support fantastic initiatives like Community Compost and Nelson Youth Theatre.” They can also lend you their gazebo for a charity event! During lockdown, instead of selling the Covid stickers, Cutting Edge took the initiative to print and distribute over 190 free Covid posters and stickers for local businesses. Health, safety and well-being is of utmost importance. “Every year, since 2017, we have achieved a green certificate from Sitewise, which is the highest possible achievement,” says Matthew. “The safety and wellbeing of our team, our clients and members of public around us when we are working is something we never compromise.” Cutting Edge Signs is not just profit-driven business, they are responsibility driven. “We are constantly evolving as a business and are learning every day from our clients, our suppliers and our staff,” says Arko.

Wayne Williams Hi everyone, it might be cold, but wow, the time is flying by, it’s mid July already. The Club has been very steady since I wrote my last burble, with the AGM on Sunday 27th June attended by a small but dedicated group of members, and a few bevies and nibbles were enjoyed afterwards. Also in this period, we had the 8 days of the South Island 8 Ball Champs. This was a great event, and many congrats must go to the organising committee and all their volunteers. There was a lot of fun and humour, things ran like clockwork, and the visiting players all had very complimentary things to say. So, well done everyone, look forward to seeing it back here again soon, lol. We have had many other events over this period. Last weekend, we hosted the NZMCA Dinner for 180. It was really great to see the numbers swell from 80 last year due to Covid, so we look forward to hosting these people again next year. The next big item on the agenda is the Club Waimea 50th Anniversary. This is being held on the weekend of 24-25 July 2021. (Refer to the poster in this centrespread). There will be a Saturday night Dinner including speakers and entertainment, a Sunday Lunch for Life Members, Past Presidents, Board and Executive, followed by Sunday Blue’s from 3-6pm. So, I am sure everyone can find a slot to make an appearance and enjoy part of our history. Keep warm and keep smiling everyone. Until next time.

Opening on 9 August, Montessori Lite is a home-based space for 2.5 to 6 year olds. The owner, Sunandra Reddy, initially trained as an assistant in a Montessori infant community in Japan, before graduating from an AMIaccredited training centre in India in 2010. “I spent the next 10 years teaching and leading Montessori Casa Dei Bambini (36) environments in Sydney and Nelson,” says Sunandra. “The heart of the Montessori method is about showing little people how to be people – I love this philosophy.” While Montessori environments share the same philosophy and similar materials, they are all unique spaces. Flipout’s preschool time is lots of fun and a safe place for kids to run free inside. No problem with the weather at Flipout! Our kid’s areas are always open and ready for fun. The new playground with tunnel slide and bouncy castle has a preschool party area right beside it to have your child’s party in, all fenced and secure. We have an under 8 trampoline area with their very own foam pit and they are also allowed on any of the other trampolines if supervised, so can really get rid of that excess energy. Our special preschool price of $8 from 10am to 2pm during the school term, excluding holidays, is also an opportunity for parents to have a bounce with their child for free. Great meetup place for preschoolers to have play time together while parents/caregivers sip on one of our barista coffees from our snack bar. Come check us out.

Trish Palmer reveals all in her new book Knock Knock. Photo: Jo Kent.

Trish reveals life behind closed doors Jo Kent Reporter

jo@waimeaweekly.co.nz

For almost 30 years, Trish Palmer has been invited into the homes of random strangers. Her role as an interviewer for market research companies saw her door-knocking every day. From rural properties to urban dwellings, she’s travelled the length and breadth of the Top of the South. Based in Stanley Brook, near Tapawera, she’s now decided to turn her experiences into a book, called ‘Knock Knock’. “Going into people’s homes is a huge privilege,” says Trish. “But you do see some odd things. I once interviewed a witch who had an actual cauldron, wand and pointy hat. I loved it. As long as I didn’t end up in the cauldron, I was quite happy. Everything in another cou-

ple’s house was completely French, yet they had never even set foot in France.” Trish says her career has been packed with highs and lows. “The children are the best. From the girl who sat stroking my hair throughout the whole interview to the boy who sat picking his nose and all of them in between.” Trish now lives in a quiet valley with no close neighbours. She uses resources grown on the property and her appliances run on solar power. “I’ve met such an array of people and for that I’m really grateful,” says Trish. “I enjoy spending time with people from a wide range of lives that I would never otherwise see.” If you’d like to win a copy of Knock Knock, email Jo@waimeaweekly. co.nz. The first three entries will receive a book from our Stoke office.

Meet your new Mako Jonty Dine

The Tasman Mako have named five new faces for its 2021 squad, four from the Nelson club rugby ranks. The dominance of the Mako in recent years, which includes back-toback premiership titles, has got the attention of the All Blacks with David Havili, Sevu Reece, Will Jordan, Ethan Blackadder, Shannon Frizell, Tyrel Lomax all selected in the top national side. This has left some gaps for which Tasman has turned to its deep talent pool to fill. Clockwise from top: Waimea Old Boys first five Campbell Parata has been rewarded for his excellent form in the past three seasons which has seen him land a number of clutch kicks at goal. Max Hicks has been a standout in the second row during Marist’s recent success. Max is a reliable lineout target and extremely mobile around the park for a man of his size, scoring a number of spectacular tries. Antonio Shalfoon will be a significant part of the Tasman Mako engine room this year. The Stoke captain has an immense work rate in a career that has been plagued with injury.
