Opportunity to meet local author Stef Harris next week

Motueka Library is delighted to invite book lovers to meet local author Stef Harris. Stef will talk about the interesting journey leading to the publication of his new crime novel Double Jeopardy. Q&A and book sales and signing to follow.

The genesis of Double Jeopardy came about for Stef when he spent a few months working with Mel Gibson. Mel was starring in Kiwi born, Hollywood Director Martin Campbell’s film ‘Edge of Darkness’. Martin had directed James Bond films ‘Casino Royale’ and ‘Goldeneye’ but to Stef his greatest achievement was the 1984 multi Bafta Award winning series ‘Edge of Darkness’.

“I had been selected by Martin for the Air New Zealand Scholarship in film, learning the film directing trade from the master himself. I learned a great deal about directing from Martin and as a bonus I picked up some valuable knowledge from Oscar winning director Mel Gibson also. What did I learn from Martin Campbell? I learned to be absolutely ruthless in the pursuit of my ambition to direct a movie. Martin’s influence was to prove instrumental to the dream to create our own feature film “Blue Moon” here in my hometown of Motueka,” says Stef.

But it was Mel Gibson who inspired him to write Double Jeopardy. In ‘Edge of

Darkness’, Mel played Tom Craven, a Boston policeman, obsessed with thoughts of revenge.

“I was completely captivated by the depth of his performance in the role. Years later I began writing ‘Double Jeopardy’ with the firm idea the book would be a film and Mel Gibson would play Frank Winter,” says Stef.

Stef remembers being on set with Mel twelve hours a day six days a week and that he was always just ‘a regular kiwi guy’. He had a huge trailer but scarcely spent any time there. Rather he would hang out with the crew and he would cheerfully talk to anyone including Stef.

“We had Boston Common roped off for a scene and a group of bystanders was lined up trying to see what was happening. Mel just walked over and told them about the film and the story and was happy to chat until he was needed in the scene. He was a gentleman like that.”

One time in the story the villains were trying to run him down with a car in the street and Mel had to fire eight shots into the windscreen, to kill the driver so they would crash into the river.

“I tried to tell him he should hold the Glock pistol two handed like we learned at Police College. Mel said “Stef, this is a movie!” I thought about that long and hard and his words. What seemed like an off the cuff remark in fact carried

weight that served me well when I eventually made my own Movie, ‘Blue Moon.’”

When Stef sat down to write ‘Double Jeopardy’ all he needed to do was close his eyes and put Mel Gibson in the role of Frank Winter.

Left: Motueka cop Stef Harris has published his new crime novel ‘Double Jeopardy’ and is launching it in the Motueka Library next Monday, 26 June at 5.30pm.

Brian ‘The Sheriff’ Gilbert - poems digging below the surface

A better yarn was never had than that over the bar at the Cardrona Hotel in Central Otago.

Proprietor Brian Gilbert could spin with the best of them, including Kiwi icon and legend, Barry Crump. Barry was a regular at the Cardrona and Brian soon became a good mate – and he has Barry’s old hat to prove it.

Brian’s six years at the Cardrona gave him time and space to indulge his love of poetry. Pen to page was his thing. He spouted of few of them to his mates from time to time but never much in the public arena.

“Nah,” says Brian. “I was never one for public speaking and the like. But I loved writing, both poems and yarns. That’s how come Crump gave me his hat. The deal was, I could have the hat provided I wrote my own book. That was 29 years ago!”

Well the book hasn’t been written yet but Brain “The Sheriff” Gilbert has a wealth of poems under his belt and he will be stepping out of the shadows later this month to perform as the featured guest at Golden Bay Live Poets Society gathering at the Mussel Inn. His set will be preceded by the fabulous and long-running open mic session for poets and singers and storytellers.

Garrick Tremain,

another of the ‘Cardrona’ friends, has captured the rough exterior of this good Kiwi bloke in an engaging portrait that hangs proudly on the wall of his home in Ferntown. But beneath that surface, there is a depth of writing talent that showcases an understanding of the human condition and every-day emotion that, Brian admits, is not often shared outside of a tall glass.

“Actually getting “The Sheriff” on stage has been a challenge,” says Mark Raffills, spokesperson for Golden Bay Live Poets. “But we are going to be in for a walloping good time.

“Brian’s delivery is calm, paced and quietly confident. His phrasing digs out all the shades and hues of the words and you find yourself ‘leaning in’ to capture every morsel of his poems.”

This former electrician, who has served his time in a number of adventurous ‘trades’ returned to the Bay 16

years ago. His Jade carving is exhibited in his Drift n Jade Gallery in Collingwood. And that long-promised book? Well, it may be a step closer after this, Brian’s first public performance of his poems.

Open Mic participants should get in early on the night to book a spot behind the microphone. Musicians, alanjahjah and Joy will set the

Steiner kindergarten build underway

Finn Murphy, Henry Robertson, Florence Robertson, Annabel Perzigian, Anna Langridge, Willa Shirley, Ahika Treerise and Seren Richardson are excited to witness the build of their new kindergarten getting underway.

Child-proof fences have gone up and a construction crew is hard at work laying concrete and piles for a new kindergarten at the Steiner School on Robinson Road.

A sense of excitement surrounds the site in these early days. School children stop and watch the machines at work, moving huge mounds of earth to make way for concrete and wood posts. The loud rumbles and bangs can

be heard across the school grounds.

Motueka Rudolf Steiner Trust Chair Zoe Dryden said she was excited to see the kindergarten build underway and the transition of the kindergarten to a farmbased campus. “It’s an incredible location for our kids and the move strengthens our vision for supporting the child’s development from the early childhood through to preparing them for high

school in a seamless transition. Our tamariki love this location and we look forward to welcoming more children to this creative educational environment as our capacity expands with this move.”

Work started at the end of May on the 40-child kindergarten. On June 2, a ceremonial stone was blessed and laid in the ground while teachers and parents sang a song and expressed a vision and hope for

the new kindergarten. The first concrete was poured while families and teachers looked on.

The original Steiner Kindergarten is operating on Wallace Street, near the library, and will move to the new site at the beginning of 2024. The two properties on Wallace Street that make up the kindergarten and a craft room will be put on the market, and the proceeds used to fund the new building. The

kindergarten has been in operation at the Wallace Street site for more than 30 years.

The move to Robinson Road will create a farm campus for the school and kindergarten, which will welcome children from the age of three to 12 years old. Coman Construction is managing the build.

The kindergarten can be contacted at office@mskindergarten.nz

Green Party announces Steve Richards as candidate for West-Coast Tasman

Motueka Community swimming pool update

Tasman local Steve Richards has been selected to represent the Green Party at this year’s General Election as the candidate for WestCoast Tasman.

The large geographic area of the electorate means that it is covered by three membership branches, Golden Bay, Motueka and West Coast.

“I am standing to try and accelerate government action to mitigate the worst effects of climate change and to help communities build resilience. Only a strong Green voice in parliament will

ensure urgency on this issue,” says Steve.

“Climate change is just one evident impact of humankind overstepping ecological boundaries. We are a part of nature not apart from it. We need to scale back human consumption to bring resource and energy use to a more sustainable level,” he says.

Steve is also passionate about helping create a fairer society where everyone can access warm, dry, affordable housing. For this to be a reality for all New Zealanders he says we need to rethink how the economy serves us and how wealth can be more equitably distributed.

The Green Party policy he is most keen to see progress is a tax on capital. Without this tax, the rich will continue to shirk their share of taxpaying obligations.

“Being the Green Party candidate for West CoastTasman in the 2020 election was a huge learning opportunity and I now have the chance to use that experience to really activate the Green Party Vote in this region. I’m humbled by the trust the Party members have put in me to represent their views and the values of the Party,” says Steve.

The Motueka Community Swimming Pool Committee has spent the last few months engaging with the Tasman District Council (TDC) at all levels. The Feasibility Study undertaken last year was completed in December and will become public information once formally presented to Council. As a step on the way, the Motueka Community Board received the report during a publicly excluded session of their April meeting. They presented to the Board earlier in the meeting along with very supporting presentations from Motueka Lions and Motueka Rotary. The Board formally requested that the Council consider allocation of funding for the development of a six lane community pool for Motueka as the priority project for Motueka. The Ward Councillors and Community Board are always supportive of the pool project. As many of you will have seen, the funding

for building the pool has been withdrawn from the TDC 20232024 Annual Plan. Unfortunately that is the reality - the pool will not be built this year. However, this does not mean that the TDC have withdrawn support for the pool, just that it will not happen this year. The second tranche of Better Off Funding as part of the Three Waters/Affordable Water changes will not be available which is a blow but the TDC is working on other sources of funds.

The Pool Committee

presented to the TDC Annual Plan Hearing in Richmond on Tuesday, 16 May. They reiterated (yet again!) that the need for a covered and heated pool for Motueka and the community support is well-documented.

The Motueka community is not happy with delays and news articles about timing and withdrawal of funding which left the community in the dark and nervous. They asked that the Council give TDC staff the direction and resources to move the project forward.

The new Long Term

Plan for TDC is being developed and this will be the key for the Pool. As with the 2021-31 LTP, the community support and input will be important. The Motueka Community Swimming Pool Committee will keep you updated.

In the meantime, they would like to thank the community for the support for our on-going fundraising - film and quiz nights and donations. The $225,000 raised locally is still secure in the NBS bank along with pledges from local businesses.

Mitre 10 Motueka ready to provide a ‘Helping Hand’

As a staunch supporter of the local community, Mitre 10 Motueka has long been renowned for their community spirit and generosity and over the previous few years they’ve helped many community groups and individuals with their DIY projects.

“We’ve always been a key part of this community, so giving back is important to us,” says owner Dave Richards. “It’s very rewarding for us to

help others out.”

Participating in the store’s ‘Helping Hands’ initiative, Dave and his team are inviting expressions of interest from local charities, community groups and not-forprofit organisations who could do with a ‘Helping Hand’.

Providing practical hands-on help like building decks and sheds, making over gardens and playgrounds, painting walls and laying floors

or lending a hand to those in need with builds, renovations or makeovers, they’re eager to find out who is in need of help.

Keen to hear from anyone, whether a club or community member, who would benefit from a bit of DIY know-how and some muscle to get the job done to help improve the lives of those impacted or the community, contact the team via email Ethan.sim@mitre10.co.nz

Ben Franks, a New Zealand Rugby Union coach and former player who played as a prop and was renowned for his strength, is being hosted by the Rotary Club of Motueka as their guest speaker on Monday, 3 July at the R.S.A.

He’s one of only 21 players to have won the Rugby World Cup on multiple occasions and as a child spent time living in Motueka. It was during his childhood, on his sixth birthday, when his father took him down to Motueka’s Huia Rugby Club, his passion for the game was first ignited.

“Being an All Black is a dream of all NZ kids. As I got older it changed from a dream to wanting to be the best rugby player I could be, and to me that was being an All Black,” says Ben. His personal training philosophy consists of three mantras; master the basics, hard-work and consistency.

With a wealth of knowledge under

his belt, Ben advises young athletes not to be in a rush when putting weight on the bar during strength training.

“Take time to master the technique. When you can achieve full range with correct technique, then you can add the weight.”

The 48 test rugby player who has since coached in Wales is off to Japan next season.

“The fun part about being a professional rugby player for me was outside of game day the pursuit of getting better, every training session was an opportunity to achieve this.”

Anyone is welcome to join Rotary with Fellowship beginning at 5.30pm, a meal ($22) at 6pm, with Ben speaking at 6.45pm. Drinks will be available at the bar.

Bookings are essential for catering purposes and required before June, 30, please phone Graham Wilson 0274841404 or email grahamwilson3130@ gmail.com

Hato Hone St John Caring Caller – Connecting Hearts for 26 years

Loneliness and isolation can weigh heavily on individuals who find themselves alone or distanced from loved ones in our communities. At Hato Hone St John, they understand the profound negative impact of these feelings can have on an individual’s health and wellbeing. To combat these effects, Hato Hone St John have offered a confidential, friendship-based telephone service for over 26 years throughout Aotearoa. Their national team of dedicated volunteers complete an astounding 50,000 + friendship calls each year – spreading warmth, compassion, and a sense of belonging to those who need it most.

When partners and friends pass on, or when family members are far away, it becomes all too easy to slip into isolation. For those who are homebound or unwell, connecting with others can feel like an insurmountable chal-

lenge. That’s where the Caring Caller volunteers step in. Hato Hone St John match individuals seeking friendship with empathetic volunteers who understand the importance of companionship. A simple conversation and a kind inquiry about their well-being can work wonders in brightening someone’s day. With each call, the volunteers assist their new friends to bridge the gap between isolation and connection –ensuring that no-one feels alone in their journey.

To learn more about

this programme, please feel free to email at CaringCaller@ stjohn.org.nz or give them a call at 0800 ST JOHN. Their team would be delighted to provide you with additional information and answer any questions you may have about the programme.

Furthermore, Hato Hone St John are excited to announce that they will be hosting an information session about volunteering with the Caring Caller programme. They invited you to join them at 11am on Thursday, 22 June at the Motueka Library.

Their volunteers make a significant difference in our local community and they welcome the opportunity to share their programme with you and your whanau.

If you or someone you know is seeking meaningful connections and wishes to make a positive impact in the lives of others, please don’t hesitate to contact Hato Hone St John directly. Together, we can create a more connected and caring community.

Remember, a single call can spark a friendship that brightens lives!

Stories for Adults

Full House for Penguin Professor Cockrem

Tasman Bay Blue Penguin Trust: Prof John Cockrem (Patron) Larry Lumsden (Trustee), Linda Jenkins (Trustee), Dr Mana Stratton (Hon Wildlife Vet) and Frances Stratton (Penguin Rehabilitator).

Northland Poet

Keith Levy has fond memories of Motueka, having lived here as a child and is looking forward to returning on Tuesday, 27 June. “My last visit here was a very successful performance Motueka Live Poets in 2019.” That performance he kept everyone enthralled with his wit and wisdom as he

delivered a beautiful series of poems.

Motueka Live Poets has moved to Mapua and attracts audiences from all over Tasman, with an Open Mic invitation and highlighted in June with Keith’s guest performance. With a soothing backing of guitar, Keith Levy takes us on a journey through life with impressions and

insights from relationships, memories and connections. Pyjamas and dressing gowns are acceptable attire for this evening of bedtime stories.

Penguin scientist Professor

John Cockrem of Massey University drew a full house at Kimi Ora Eco Resort last week as keynote speaker for the Tasman Bay Blue Penguin Trust’s community talk about korora (little penguins).

“Tasman Bay is acknowledged as significant habitat for little penguins as is neighbouring Golden Bay,”

says Prof Cockrem. “Encroaching residential development and consequential increase in mammalian threats such as dogs is putting pressure on little penguins’ ability to thrive. Unless we make changes and learn to live with little penguins, we are at serious risk of them becoming locally extinct.”

Local penguin rehabilitation vet, Dr Mana Stratton, also spoke about the challenges

of having increasing numbers of little penguins coming to her clinic due to dog attacks and boat strikes, as well as climate-related environmental conditions resulting in difficult foraging.

“I would rather dog owners put a lead on their dog than deal with the horrendous consequences,” says Mana.

In addition to work with community groups and advo-

cacy for korora, Prof. Cockrem also works with local councils by providing penguin management plans for coastal developments and working with construction teams to ensure that penguins are not harmed. Last week, he was at Port Tarakohe in Golden Bay working with TDC contractors involved in the port’s extension.

“Doughnuts and DegrowthImagining a New Future”

This lecture was second of this year’s Local Matters events.

In the first, held April 17, Dr. Mike Joy offered overwhelming evidence the world will run out of energy before reaching carbon neutrality, at current rates. Degrowth, which rejects the belief that economic growth should be pursued at all costs, was held up as a solution.

With June 7 event, former MP Gareth Hughes, now country lead of the Wellbeing Economy Alliance Aotearoa New Zealand, is talking with ordinary people about what they think about the economy. He stated that the economy is too important to leave to the economists, and that 95% of economics is common sense. Gareth noted that past economic theory has relied on a virtuous circle of improved productivity, increased exports, and accelerating growth.

This theory assumes all natural resources can be extracted cheaply to support production.

Our planet has taken the position that enough is enough; there are limits.

The Doughnut is a graphical representation of rings, showing resources, bounded by how much of each society needs to survive, and what the environment can provide. (Reference: https://www.kateraworth.com/doughnut ). “Overshoot”, or consumption of a resource beyond what our planet can provide, has devastating consequences to society, such as pollution, biodiver -

sity loss, and climate change. The benefits of unbounded economic growth, at historical targets of 4% yearly, do not benefit society equally.

Jack Santa Barbara laid out changes needed to reverse the effects of economic growth. A goal of degrowth is to reduce extraction, production and consumption to a level our planet can carry. Another is to support the vulnerable through inevitable consequences as the economy adjusts. A third goal is to change our economic sys-

tems to preserve a stable steady state.

Jack proposed that governments use indices of well-being to measure of societal heath, not economic growth. He supported minimum income guarantees for individuals, and income limits to discourage concentration of wealth beyond what anyone needs or can spend. He called for taxes on natural resource extraction and labour to fund support programs for society. Citizens can take a role by building resilient communi -

ties, and importantly, through their spending choices. Basic needs must be met in food, water and shelter.

“I initially was overwhelmed by the size and scope of what would change to provide a future world worth living in. Then, event master of ceremonies Steve Richards closed the evening. He reminded the audience that every dollar spent is a political statement. That is, we all have the power to change the world with what and how we consume. We’ve got this!”

New food trailer on the scene

e CheeseShop has been operating at the Nelson and Motueka weekend markets out of a custom-built trailer for almost three decades. It has served Eric and Barbara well over the last four years since they took over the business, but that time has come to an end. e CheeseShop is now proud to introduce e Mouse Trap, our brand new food trailer.

e Mouse Trap is fully refrigerated. In addition to the over 100 cheeses we normally sell, we’ll be adding in hot cheese meals too. e rst hot cheese meals available for our cold mornings are hot toasties and tomato soup. We have just cheese on white bread, ham & cheese on tin loaf, and brie and blueberry on sunshine loaf. We’ll be adding additional menu items as we go along. Let us know what cheesy goodness you’d like us to serve!

We’re keeping our focus on quality artisanal cheese, especially local producers like Kervella and ViaVio. We carry our favourite cheeses from all over the country, from Dunedin to Kerikeri. We’re known for our aged goudas which we get from Meyer in Hamilton and age in our special chiller. We also carry some imported cheeses that can’t be made in NZ such as

Roquefort and Manchego. Lots of our cheeses we sell in bulk and can cut it fresh for you for whatever size you need.

e Mouse Trap continues to do the Nelson Saturday Market and Motueka Sunday Market. But now, Monday to Friday from 10am-4pm we’ll be open at Eden’s Edge Lodge, 137 Lodder Lane in Riwaka. Weekday sales are cheese only for now. You can also give us a call outside those hours as we’re almost always available at the lodge.

Big blue and brand new impresses pre-schoolers

Lately Oasis Education preschool have been interested/ hiahia in transport, every time a truck pulls up outside or a rubbish truck comes to collect its lunch/kai ( at least that’s what teachers are told is happening), the majority of children rush over to the front window and the discussions start. Children/tamariki have even asked for a schematic drawing of a rubbish truck and the road sweeper picking up the leaves to see

how they worked. With the pedal tractor and car out the back-yard always a favourite. A visit from a little tractor so the children can see it and touch it, even sit in the seat would be an amazing opportunity to develop theories and extend vocabulary and share their knowledge with friends.

Thanks to Motueka Farm Machinery this was able to happen and they had BIG BLUE at school to look touch and climb over.

This generated around two hours of non-stop discussions & exploration. Some children already knew plenty about tractors.

The amazing community that Oasis Education preschool are part of allows them to offer real life experiences with the specialised age group of over 3 – school age. It allows children to collect their knowledge and share but also add to it with discussions with their friends.

Football: The game where everyone knows the rules! But do we?

Football is a sport where two teams of 11 players compete to outscore each other while following the 17 laws of football. Both Football and Rugby have Laws governing the game (instead of rules) as the original laws, for both these games, were created by lawyers. Football can be played on either grass or artificial turf, but the surface must be green in colour. The field must be rectangular in shape, marked by two short goal lines and two long touch lines. The field must be divided into two equal halves by a line that runs parallel to the goal line. This line serves as a centre, and in senior football a circle of 9.15m diameter is drawn evenly over it. This is the first law.

The second law specifies the shape, size, and makeup of the ball while laws 3 and 4 pertain to the players and their equipment. Law 5 and 6 denote the Referee and match officials, with duration of the match covered in law 7. It is not until law 8 that the laws cover the game, starting with the start (kick off)

and restart (second half kick-off). One of the most controversial laws is number 9, whether the ball is in or out of play. This law states that the ball is in play from the start of each playing period with a kick-off and is still in play unless it leaves the field of play, or the referee stops the game. The ball must cross the line completely or it is considered still in play. This is regardless of if it is on the ground or in the air. The player can step off the pitch as it is the ball position that regulates the game play. The outcome of a match is determined by law 10, while law 11 covers another highly controversial match day dispute: the offside law.

There are two instances when an attacking player is allowed to be offside. These are when taking a corner and a throw in. It is not an offence to be in an offside position, until the ball is played by the offside player, ‘becoming involved in active play’. The offside law states that ‘a player is in an offside position if any of their body parts (except the hands and

arms), are in the opponent’s half of the pitch, closer to the opponents goal line than both the ball and the second-to-last opponent’. Remembering that the last opponent is usually (but also not necessarily) the keeper. The best way to determine whether a player is offside is to have linesmen running the touch lines.

The laws 12,13 and 14 pertain to Misconducts and the disciplinary consequences within the game. Throw-ins, goal kicks and corner kicks are covered by the last 3 laws. These are intended to guide the decision making of which team gains possession of the ball, if the entire ball crosses the touch line or goal line, but not in the goal box. For further, in depth details of these laws, look up the Nelson Bays Football website.

Motueka Bowling Club news

Results of the Motueka Bowling Club’s Open Triples Tournament held on Saturday, 10 June 2023.

The tournament was generously sponsored by Motueka Super Liquor.

22 teams participated in this event, which needed both greens to accommodate. It is unusual for a bowling event to be played on a cotula green at this time of the year but the fine weather we have experienced lately allowed that to happen.

4 games of 8 ends, two bowl triples were played.

It was remarkable to see the winners of the previous tournament again winning. Well done girls.

Results:

1st Jean McKenzie, Helen Guiney, Lynne Mc Causland, from the Richmond club with 31/2 wins, 20 ends, 31 points

2nd Alan Smail, Ty Gurr, Lynda Erasmus from the Nelson Club with 3 ½ wins, 17 ends, 40 points

3rd Sam Woods, Jack Priddle, Colin Fickling from the Motueka club with 3 wins, 20 ends, 38 points

4th Neville Turner, Justine Cowman, Cheryl Turner from the Motueka Club with 3 wins, 19 ends, 40 points

Many thanks to Motueka Super Liquor for supporting the Motueka Bowling Club.
