Autumn keeps gardeners busy Gardeners across the region will be breathing a sigh of relief as autumn comes to a close and fewer leaves will need to be collected. At Nelson Central School, caretaker Peter Marshall says he’s collected a few wheelie bins full of leaves,

the capabilities of local businesses, bring people into the CBD, and assert Nelson as a prominent business community.” Richmond Unlimited committee member Steve Page says the group is “very, very pleased” to be a part of the move. “It’s great to see Richmond Unlimited getting into quite positive steps to help build the business community. I think it’s a quick catch up to what the rest of the world is doing and we need to show that we are as good as any market leader in the world. With Kmart coming, the Warehouse coming, free

parking and now free WiFi, it’s certainly making us one of the more progressive shopping centres in the South Island.” The area where the free WiFi will be available will be Queen St and all of the major car parks. Businesses will be able to buy “drop downs” that will advertise quick messages, like a sale or coffee deals, says Steve. TDC councillor Judene Edgar says “it’s great that Richmond Unlimited has picked up this initiative themselves”. According to the Statistics New Zealand 2012 Internet Service Providers Survey, more than half of New Zealanders are now accessing the internet via a mobile phone.

Newcomers boost Nelson’s economy

Nelson lists near the top of regions other New Zealanders have been moving to and that’s having a positive impact on its economy, with many of those newcomers setting up new businesses. In a worldwide survey conducted by Gallup, New Zealanders are the most transient people in the world, with a quarter of the population having moved to a different part of the country in the past five years, the New Zealand Herald reported last week. The top destination was Auckland, followed by Otago and then Nelson. The survey coincided with the 2011 Christchurch earthquake, which may account for the high figures and two South Island regions featuring in the top three. CEO of the Nelson Regional Economic Development Agency, Bill Findlater, says the number of people making the move to Nelson from other regions was a positive reflection on the city. “Nelson is a great place

Nickie Skinner with son Blake, 9, has recently moved to Nelson bringing her and her husband’s two businesses with them. to live and work, it’s beautiful, we have great weather, a good climate and really good infrastructure. It’s great to see so many people choosing to move here. A lot of the people who come are successful in their fields of business, adding to the livelihood of the region and helping to revitalise the economy. “ Brent and Nickie Skinner moved from Southbridge in rural Canterbury to Nelson last year to give their two sons a chance to grow up in a city not constantly in rebuild mode. They brought their already set up businesses to Nelson after recognising they could be successful here and say they are loving life since making the

move. “It’s been a really positive move for us, our businesses were draggable, we have family here and we’d always wanted to move here. Nelson is such a positive environment to live in, we feel so at home.” Dianne Lineham and Saeed Awad, owners of Taste of Egypt, moved to Richmond following the second earthquake. The couple’s home was damaged in the first quake and their rental was then put on the market following the second one, sparking a move back to Dianne’s home-town. “We lost our home and then the house we were renting was put on the market so that was the final straw,” says Dianne. “But we love doing business in Nelson.”

Stoke residents cross over crossing Andrew Board Crossing Main Rd Stoke to catch the bus or buy bread and milk has become so dangerous that four Kensington Court residents have asked the council to build a pedestrian refuge for them. Ninety six year old Beverley Thompson says crossing the road from the retirement village to the Z service station is

like running with the bulls and a pedestrian refuge in the middle of the road will give her and other elderly time to cross the road safely. Beverley, alongside Daphne Stephens, Joan Price and Kay Price, presented the submission to Nelson City Council’s annual plan last Thursday and say they hope a refuge can be built sooner rather than later.

Kensington Court residents Daphne Stephens, Beverley Thompson, Kay Price and Joan Price hope the council will put a pedestrian refuge on Main Rd Stoke so they can cross the road to catch the bus. Photo: Andrew Board.

“This is a very dangerous road to cross because of the traffic coming out of Robinson’s Complex and people wanting to go to the garage. We can get to Richmond on the bus by walking outside but if we come back on the bus, it’s dynamite to cross the road,” says Beverley. There is a refuge further up the road but Beverley says it’s too far for many of the residents. “Our residents are not capable of walking up to use the crossing that is just beyond Polstead Rd. If they do that they still have to cross busy Polstead Rd.” The submission was one of dozens that councillors heard last week as part of the annual plan process. Nelson mayor Aldo Miccio says it was nice to have the ladies come in and speak to the council. “I think it’s a great idea. Staff will give us more information in the next few weeks and as long as there aren’t any unforeseen challenges it seems to be something that is quite reasonable and needed so it’s something I hope we can facilitate and make happen.” Some other projects spoken about last week were a new indoor cricket centre, Nelson Lawns tennis clubrooms and a new building for the surf lifesaving club on the Tahuna Playing Fields.

Locals given second notice to pay up Tracey Lynch and Steve Garnett have been sent a second notice to pay up or face losing their land. The couple received the notice last Friday which gives them a final ten days to pay the more than $1 million awarded to the New Zealand Fire Service, Waimea Rural Fire Committee and the insurers for Nelson Forests Ltd or put together a reasonable solution about how the debt will be cleared. Their story featured in last week’s Nelson Weekly and they say they’ve had a huge response, with thousands of dollars being pledged to a fundraising website set up by a friend to try to raise the money needed to pay the settlement. They have also attracted plenty of media interest from other newspapers, radio stations and television programmes. Tracey says people on the street have even given her hugs since the story was reported. She says the latest notice is another blow but it was expected and she is now working with a lawyer to try to come to an arrangement without having to give up their beloved

Even people saying nice things to us, it just makes you feel more normal and less stupid.” The court decision was three and a half years after a rural fire that started on Tracey and Steve’s property destroyed forestry and another family’s home. They didn’t have liability insurance on their bed and breakfast cabins so were responsible for the costs of fighting the fire. Tracey says they are far from out of the woods and the likelihood is that they will still lose their property but there is hope. “People have been really generous with the donations to the website and we’ve even had phone calls from the North Island from people wanting to help. It’s been overwhelming really.” To donate to their cause visit www. tripletui.com.

The show was supported by the Body Shop who did the models make-up using their brand new eye-popping colours for the glamorous eye make- up. Lush products were used to finish off the hair styling and the girls in store have also just taken delivery a new

range of solid shampoo bars to keep your locks looking lovely.

trouble financially. I got behind in the rent and power, to pay for my car repairs and my child’s birthday. Now my landlord keeps texting me, and my power is going to be disconnected. Who will help me? A: You can help yourself by: 1. First talking to your landlord, and offer to pay an extra amount each week to catch up the rent. 2. Phoning your power company and ask to pay extra each week to cover the arrears 3. If the power company wants more than you can afford, you will have to find extra money to keep the power on. If you need further help, seek budget advice and maybe ask WINZ for a loan towards your power bill if you are receiving a benefit To prevent you getting into this situation again:  Always pay your rent and power as soon as you get income into your bank. They are a PRIORITY  Save for car costs weekly: include registration, warrant of fitness and maintenance. Then you will have money available to fix your car  Also put money aside for presents and birthday celebrations.  Also think outside the square when organising a birthday party for your child. It doesn’t need to cost much to be an exciting celebration.

Our town is NZ’s top e-town

Nelson has beaten out New Zealand’s biggest cities to claim the title of New Zealand’s top Google eTown. Nelson topped fellow finalists Auckland City, Wellington, Tauranga and Queenstown, in the award launched by Google to celebrate the towns and cities where small to medium businesses (SMEs) are making the best use of the web to connect with customers and grow. Nelson mayor Aldo Miccio says he was delighted with the accolade, attributing

the city’s success to its “passionate creative people who have found clever ways of doing business, taking advantage of technology and the business opportunities it brings”. Bill Findlater, chief executive of Nelson Regional Economic Development Agency, says that Nelson was a region of SMEs with many entrepreneurs who had recognised they could run a successful business in a fabulous lifestyle location, thanks to the opportunities offered by the web. “This is

a very special place to live and we have had fibre optic in the ground for a lot longer than many other areas,” says Bill. “Entrepreneurs from all over New Zealand and the world have chosen to move here because the internet means they can run their businesses from this amazing city. There are people living here who have their offices in London.” Tony Keusgen, of Google NZ, says that Nelson’s success demonstrated that towns and regions outside of main metropolitan

areas can reap the rewards of the web. “The web means that small businesses can look as big and professional as large corporations, and local corner stores can export to the whole world thanks to e-commerce and online marketing. And this doesn’t stop with businesses. The web levels the playing field for towns, regions or countries too, and the eTown awards are proof of this.” The awards have previously been held in Europe, Australia and Canada.

Anika Rameka-iti will never forget Plunket’s birthday, although she’s not likely to remember her first birthday presents. Anika was the only baby born in Nelson on Plunket’s 106th birthday, on May 14, and as a result her parents got surprised with a goodie pack, including a car seat and savings account with sponsor BNZ. Plunket’s community services manager, Gayle Petch, says each year Plunket arranges to give a goodie pack to the first baby in Nelson born on their birthday. “It’s a really nice way to recognise Plunket’s birthday and at the same time give something back to some local parents and their delicious new baby.” Anika’s parents, Jared and Lauren, say they were shocked with the gifts and

were happy to be a part of Plunket’s celebrations. “When we got pregnant with our first child we were in Australia and they don’t have anything like Plunket. So we were really happy to come home to have our family and get support from Plunket, I think it’s really important,” says Lauren. Amongst the pack was a car seat donated by Plunket, a BNZ teddy bear, a $100 voucher to the Lone Star, a $100 voucher to Nelson Beauty Therapy and a backpack filled with bits and pieces from Nelson Resene. BNZ have also set up a savings account for Anika with $30 already in it. BNZ are also hosting a sausage sizzle this week to raise funds for Plunket. Gayle says Nelson Plunket works with around 1000 families in the region each year.

Students get into challenge Andrew Board One 12 year old boy has an impressive list of groups he’s dedicated time to this year – from Natureland to a local rest home – but Josh McIntyre is just one of 23 local students doing more than their bit in the community. Josh is doing the year-long William Pike Challenge Award, along with 22 other Nelson College Preparatory School students. The challenge was created by Northland teacher William Pike, after he lost a leg in a mountaineering accident, as a way of fostering a passion for the “kiwi culture” in young people. Nelson College is one of 16 schools taking part in the challenge and students are selected to take part. They do outdoor activities, 20 hours of community service and have to develop a new sport, hobby or skill. Atawhai’s Josh has been hard at work and last Tuesday dropped off 60 cans of food to the Men’s Night

Shelter as part of his community service. He says it’s a good feeling to “help other people”. To collect cans for the men’s shelter he put a note in the letterboxes of his neighbours and hoped their generosity would make it happen. “We got about 60 cans, it was quite exciting running up the street and opening letterboxes,” Josh has also volunteered for the RSA on Anzac Day, spent time with elderly at Green Gables Rest Home, stacked firewood, cleaned up a beach, worked at Natureland and collected pet food for the SPCA. Josh’s new hobby is growing a vegetable garden and he says he’s really enjoying the challenge. Nelson College prep teacher Di Edmondson says the challenge has been great for the students and they have all embraced it but Josh’s blog is “outstanding”. The William Pike Challenge will run until the end of the school year when those who have finished will be presented with their award.

the new category for solo/duos. Oh Blok spokesman, keyboard player Paddy Sanders, says it was the year 10 and 12 students’ third attempt at Smokefreerockquest. He and guitarist Louie Persico, vocalist Kieran O’Connor and drummer Josh Barker have been playing together for three years and spend their free time ‘hanging out’ together.

Paddy puts their success down to their love of music: “We just love the music we play and the crowd makes us pumped up,” he says. “We’d love to make our careers out of music and this is a great start - but we know it will be hard.” Solo/duo winners were Livvy Nott and Anna Robinson. The national finals are in Auckland on September 28.

New business milking it You’ll find Andrew and Julia Young up at 5am bringing in the cows for milking, but unlike your usual dairy farmer, they’ll be bringing in just 20 cows instead of the usual 500, the perfect number to keep their small dairy farm thriving. It’s been just two months since their boutique business venture opened to the public and already they are selling upwards of 800 litres of untreated, unpasteurised, completely natural milk per week, to local families who are cottoning on to the idea of living a little bit more organically. Julia and Andrew are the first franchisees for Village Milk, a Takaka-based business offering real milk, sold fresh at the farm gate. The milk is dispensed via an automatic vending machine into old fashioned litre glass bottles, a niche idea that is taking people by surprise and keeping them coming back for more. As well as the full creamy taste of the milk, Andrew says it is also the hint of nostalgia people get from getting their milk the old fashioned way that is proving popular.

Sinead Ogilvie Reporter

reporter@nelsonweekly.co.nz

“The business is growing all the time, word of mouth is getting around and we are getting really good feedback about both the milk itself and the whole experience.” Andrew says customers find the vending machine something of a novelty and thinks the reason behind its success is that more people are becoming conscious of what they feed themselves and their families. “I think people are definitely becoming more aware of what they are putting into their mouths. A big part of what we do is focussing on milk quality. It comes fresh daily from the cows, is chilled and then goes straight to our customers.” People travel from as far as Nelson, Wakefield and Richmond for Village Milk and first time customers can find the Youngs at 88 Holdaway Rd in Lower Moutere. The cost per litre of milk is $2.50 and you can either purchase a glass bottle to keep for $4 or bring your own way of taking the milk home.

Funding expo a ‘must’ for community groups

The Nelson-Tasman free Funding Expo is back and bigger than ever. “We’ve had a fantastic team working on this years’ Expo to help provide people with the skills to manage, fund and grow their not-for-profit organisations,” says co-organiser Judene Edgar.

The team which includes representatives from Volunteer Nelson, Tasman District Council, Arts Council Nelson, Nelson City Council, Sport Tasman and Department of Internal Affairs have organised another full day of information, training and networking for volunteers

and workers involved in the not-for-profit sector. This is the seventh year the expo has been held, and it is now seen as a reliable one-stop-shop for community groups, charities, event organisers, schools and sports clubs reliant on grants and

fundraising. The Funding Expo is on Friday June 7 at the Hope Community Church Workshops run from 9.30am to 3pm and entry is free. If people would like more information they can contact Volunteer Nelson on 546-7681 or go to www.itson.co.nz.

Charity mini on target for early finish A ‘75 Morris Mini being restored and raffled off for charity is on track for an October completion. Bob Croy, one of the men behind the Bowater Motor Group-sponsored project believes the new canary yellow paint job and the installation of an engine means it is ahead of schedule. “I’d like to have it done so it can go sit around with some of our sponsors and give it some coverage. But it’s well and truly on track,” says Bob. “It can go down to the upholsterers which is the next step. We still need to do some wiring but hopefully that will be well on its way by next Tuesday. But I’m extremely happy with how it’s all going.” The Morris Mini will be raffled off for three months prior to the Relay for Life in March next year. It was at this event that the original idea began. Bob and some friends had raised $2500 for the Cancer Society at the Relay for Life but were still $3500 short on the highest total, raised by another group. So the decision was made to restore a car, hoping it could raise

editorial@waimeaweekly.co.nz $10,000 at the next event. “As a group, the ‘Caffeine Crew from Wakefield’ who all have coffee together on a Tuesday, we decided to do the Relay for Life. I asked how the hell could we raise $10,000 or more and kicked this idea around. That’s where it started on that morning so we went out and looked for a car. Now we’re hoping to get the old owner back behind the wheel when it’s finished. She’s in for a hell of a surprise.” Bob says he is thankful for all of the sponsors who have offered their services to the project for free, including Bowater Motor Group who have covered the cost of every part in the vehicle. “When my wife and I first envisaged doing this we were going to bankroll it ourselves but once it hit the papers people came on board and wanted to help.”

Beach protest attracts hundreds

More than 170 people joined hands and made a stand in the sand on Saturday, taking part in a day of global action. Hands Across the Sand encouraged coastal communities to unite and say no to what local activist groups are calling risky deep sea oil drilling. People from all over New Zealand took part in the campaign which saw people joing hands in a show of solidarity on local beaches, including close to 200 people at Tahunanui beach in Nelson. The protest was held in opposition to the government’s move to open up marine areas to oil drilling in depths of up to 3000m and on top of major

fault lines says Verena Maeder. “We know raising our voices against these extractive industries is effective. New Zealand said no to nuclear, no to apartheid, and now is saying no to deep sea oil drilling.” Raven Maeder, spokesperson for Youth Climate Action, says the group supported the action because they want to be able to enjoy unspoiled beaches the way their parents enjoyed them. “It sends a really strong visual message to our government that we don’t want them investing and locking us in to a future of fossil fuels, especially with the risks it poses to our beautiful country.”

Bonanza success

The Plunket Baby Bonanza drew in a 400 strong crowd on Saturday, with numbers up on last year’s event says organiser Lisa Foote. “We had 60 stalls this year, it was fantastic to see so many people come along and support the event and to see the goods go back out into the community to those who need them.” The event is a major fundraiser for Nelson Tasman Plunket and while $820 was raised for the organisation, Lisa says it is also a community service, helping local people to buy affordable children’s clothes, toys and nursery items. “It’s a great way for local people who may not be able to buy these things brand new, get quality second hand items at a great price.” All proceeds from the event stay local, going towards play groups, courses and maintenance. The next Plunket Baby Bonanza is set to be held on October 19.

Soroptimists prepare Local finds a niche with canvas pants for fashion show Only a few tickets remain for the Waimea Soroptimist group fashion fundraiser this Saturday. The event will see ticketholders treated to a fashion parade and breakfast at the Boathouse. President of the group, Lynne Ehau, says the fundraising venture is almost a sellout show with just 10 tickets remaining to what she says will be a "fantastic event."

"This will be a chance for people to enjoy a yummy breakfast and a showing of fabulous winter fashions." The event is being held in conjunction with Beetees who have donated their new winter collection to be showcased at the event. The fashion parade and breakfast will kick off at 9am. Tickets can be purchased from Beetees Nelson.

Lynne Ehau president of the Waimea Soroptomist group and member Annette Greenland get ready for the fashion parade and breakfast this weekend.

Sick of never being able to find suitable pants for the outdoors, Caleb Hill decided he would make his own. The 26 year old, who works as an auto trimmer at Mortimer’s Auto Upholstery, says the idea came about when he wanted to find a decent pair of pants that would last – also taking his love of the outdoors into consideration. “I have worked with canvas quite a bit and I knew that it would be a good product to make some clothes out of,” he says. “I ended up making a couple of pairs for some mates for hunting.” Under the official name Gors-tec, Caleb says the heavy duty canvas pants are perfect for most outdoor activities, including hunting, tramping, mountain biking and tradies. “With the 12 ounce pants, gorse can’t puncture it. At the end of the day I’m just trying to make a pair of pants that are extremely good quality, made in Nelson and are at an affordable price.” Along with gorse protection, he lists benefits such as breathability, mould protection, water resistant barriers, wind protection, UV protection, and quick drying qualities, making them the perfect pair of trousers for the outdoors and for heavy duty work. There are two weights, 12 oz and 8 oz. The pants are come in a variety of sizes ranging from extra small through to extra large and he can also customise them. “We go to great lengths to source the best New Zealand made

Photo: Phillip Rollo. products including webbing used in the New Zealand Army and heavy duty YKK zips. We have also spent a lot of time finding canvas that is comfortable to wear in everyday use.” Caleb has been selling them out of Mortimer’s Upholstery and at the Nelson and Motueka markets on the weekends. Having initially wanted to become an outdoor education teacher when he left school, Caleb says his expectations for the business “aren’t huge”. “If I can sell it off one day that will be fine

but if it’s just enough to make a bit on the side then I’d be happy. I don’t hope to become a millionaire from this I’m just rolling along and taking the opportunities as they come.” He is currently sourcing 100 per cent Dupont Kevlar in order to make motorcycle pants, something he was quite excited about as he would be the only person in New Zealand with the licence to use this particular material. For more information on Gors-tec, contact Caleb on 027 362 0048 or email Gors-tec@hotmail.com.

Do you think dairies should take a moral stand and stop selling legal highs, or if it's legal is it fair enough? Yes absolutely, we're hearing a lot more of the tragic consequences of these drugs. Sharon May Patterson. If it's legal is it fair enough? worst question I've ever heard, why should it be acceptable for synthetic cannabis, that "harms" people to be sold and legal, but not cannabis, a plant that in its 15,000 years of history has never harmed a person, if anything, healed. Doesn't make sense to me, like alcohol and cigarettes, it seems the only thing the government is interested in is our money and not concerned about our health, safety or wellbeing. Leroy Bull. I think most have already stopped. (Via text).

The rare white heron (Kotuku) is a national treasure and Whataroa is the base for the world renowned trips to the White Heron Sanctuary, in the Waitangi Roto Reserve. This is the only place in New Zealand that these beautiful birds nest ,along with the royal spoonbill and the little shag. Tours can be taken into this area all year round but to view the white heron, royal spoonbill and little shag, one needs to take the tour from September to March. There is no access from Okarito into the White Heron Sanctuary. September heralds the return of the white heron to it’s nesting site in the Waitangi-Roto stream near Whataroa. Approximately 30 pair will converge on this secret little area and another season will begin! This is the 24th season for Ken and Shirley Arnold and White Heron Sanctuary Tours as they prepare to take the groups of enthusiastic bird watchers into this pristine area. In fact, you don’t have to just be a birdwatcher to join this tour. People come from all walks of life to experience the peacefulness of the Heron Sanctuary, the walk in the rainforest and by contrast, the jetboat ride as it meanders down the Waitangi

taona river through the river flats with superlative views of the mountains including Mts Cook and Tasman. An amazing fun packed 2.5 hours. Phone 0800 523456 to book.

Countdown on for Fight for Victory Phillip Rollo In one corner is a 23 year-old part time personal trainer ready to kick-start his boxing career. In the other corner is the third generation manager of Gibbons Construction, a 38 year old, who was eager to take on the challenge, no matter the opponent. While the Cameron-Ryan Francey versus Scott Gibbons match-up might not be the headliner at next month’s Fight 4 Victory charity boxing event, it does epitomise the novelty. Next month’s Fight 4 Victory has brought together well known Nelson businessmen and women, local sporting personalities and the mayor for the event that is raising funds for the Victory Boxing Club – a club used to create a positive impact on young kids in the community. Across 13 bouts, 26 boxers will go through three two minute rounds at the Trafalgar Centre on June 1 and organisers say tickets are selling fast, with 50 corporate tables already sold out. Cameron-Ryan juggles a part time personal trainer job at Results Gym with his Applied Fitness studies at NMIT. Born in South Africa with an interest in football and cricket, the 23 year old has set himself the lofty goal of becoming a professional boxer and hopes his first amateur fight will be the beginning of bigger things. “Last year I told myself I really wanted to do a fight. I know the physical limits of boxing is pretty high,” he says. “The ultimate idea is to go pro sometime soon; I’ve definitely fallen in love with the sport.” His opponent Scott will be spurred on by a fatal work place incident that occurred on one of his sites last year.

Scott Gibbons and Cameron-Ryan Fracey will square off in next month's Fight 4 Victory charity boxing event at the Trafalgar Centre. Photo: Phillip Rollo. “It hit us pretty hard and they [the family] have to live with that, so I was inspired and motivated to do this. This isn’t something I’d usually put my hand up and do,” he says. “Pain doesn’t last forever but that does last forever. This is my personal drive to do something for him.” When questioned about his opponent’s drive to become a professional boxer, Scott says he isn’t worried. “I didn’t really worry who the opponent was. You just have to go give

your best irrespective of who you’re up against. I’m 38 so he’s certainly got youth on me.” Nelson mayor Aldo Miccio’s fight against a mystery opponent looks set to be the most interesting match-up of the night. His opponent will remain secret until the night. Tickets are available from www.ticketdirect.co.nz and from i-Sites, New World, Nelson School of Music and Theatre Royal.

Horror first half sinks Stoke Standing under the posts for the fifth time in the first forty minutes Stoke skipper Stu Tunnicliff gave an impassioned – unrepeatable – plea to his players not to give up. And despite being down 34-0 at half time they didn't. Accessman Stoke came nowhere near winning the game against the in-form Star & Garter Waimea Old Boys, they did win the second half, 5-3. Stoke made all the running in the second spell and a try to winger

Chris Little was deserved reward for their efforts. The final score was not pretty reading though and is disapointing considering Stoke's win last Saturday. This week they will play Moutere in Marlborough. At Trafalgar Park, Galbraith Group Nelson recorded another win over a Marlborough side in the Bayley's Tasman Trophy, beating Awatere 85-3. Nelson will host Waimea Old Boys this weekend at Trafalgar Park.

Fishing with

Nelson Dawnbreakers Fishing Club The snapper have now moved north and are around D’urville Island with a few stragglers still around Okiwi Bay and Delaware Bay. Unfortunately the spikey dogs have also moved into the neighbourhood and taken up residence, along with their partners in crime, the razor gang. If your gear can survive these unwanted pests, the Sounds are starting to fish really well with some excellent big winter snapper being landed. There have been some good reports of fat gurnard being landed in Tasman Bay out on the sand and kahawai are still in massive numbers inside the cut and right along the bay to D’urville Island. Kingfish will now be in Stephens’s passage but make sure you are well prepared with your gear to take on these beasts of the sea. Get into your local tackle shop and spend as much money as you can afford to make sure your gear will enable you to land these very powerful fish. In our next article we will go into what type of rods, reels and rigs are best for fishing this area.

The spat farms have slowed down now and will need to wait until next season when the water starts to warm up again. Also looking at the calendar it shows the school holidays coming up and winter can be a great time to get the kids out fishing. Even though the weather is colder it is generally much more settled with little wind and slight seas and can be a great source of entertainment. Taking kids fishing doesn’t necessarily require a boat and can be done from a wharf or beach. It can be for as little or as long as you like depending on your patience and keeping the kids occupied. Kids usually aren’t too worried if they don’t catch anything but enjoy the process of trying to catch a fish. Whatever the outcome of a day’s fishing it always comes with plenty of laughs, can cost you nothing but provide stories and pictures that kids will always treasure. Give it a go. You might be pleasantly surprised if you’ve never fished with kids before, at how excited they get at the prospect of catching a fish.

Cougars claw onto tight win Your Community Newspaper

Carol Cook

Netball Reporter editorial@nelsonweekly.co.nz The weather gods played the game when the predicted rain did not eventuate until Saturday evening and the second round of Nelson Netball was played in ideal conditions. The Grade 1 encounter between Rival Cougars and Jacks Drainmax had every indication that it would go down to the wire. There were ebbs and flows throughout the game with neither team able to get any ascendancy. While they traded goals in the opening stages it was Jacks who first broke the centre pass and went on to score five unanswered goals and looked to be on a roll. However, Rival came right back to score four of their own and went into the first break 6-7 in arrears. The second stanza recorded perfect shooting with Kim Starnes and Mackenzie Taikato for Jacks and Kelly Jenkins and Renee Bouzaid for Rival and the teams could not be separated with seven apiece. While Rival’s goal defender, Loren Heaphy was heavily penalised, she toiled to gain valuable tip ball and rebounded strongly. Rival’s tall timber Renee McConanchie and Jasmin Price shared the goal keep bib and applied plenty of pressure on the Jacks’ shooters, who at times looked under stress with their shot. The third quarter belonged to Rivals 7-5 which gave them a solitary goal lead. Goal shoot Kelly Jenkins was in the groove as she slotted a number of long range shoots, while Renee Bouzaid rotated the circle well, she found nice space close to the post. The shooters did receive quality ball from their feeders Dana Weir and Lisa Thompson while defenders Loren and Anna Allen frequently looked long for the feed. Jacks lost a little of their momentum in the final quarter when there were a number of unforced errors. Both teams were guilty of bad footwork, with no fewer than 12 footwork calls which is unacceptable at this level. Jacks circle defenders Vanessa Hislop and Julia Garde worked tirelessly to create turnover ball as there was very little opportunity of rebounds when Kelly shot 18 from 20 and Renee 12 from 14. While Kim Starnes goal average was not as high as it usually is, she could be forgiven with the amount of court work she got through. Wing defence, Lucy Leadbetter was keen throughout and although she was a little expensive in the obstruction tally she always got her hands over the ball. Rival took the maximum points, Jacks had done

Rival goal keep Renee McConachie attempts to keep out Jacks goal shoot Mackenzie Taikato. Photo: Abbie Cook. enough to gain a bonus point with the 30-27 score line. Premier netball preview: At 5.45pm on Thursday night, defending champions Jacks OPD wil be odds on favourites to take Stoke Nelson Building Society. Jacks will want a more consistent four quarters while Stoke NBS will be looking on their attacking performance. The game of the night is likely to be Waimea College versus Prices Pharmacy. While Waimea have maximum points with two wins, Prices are sitting with one bonus point after their one goal loss to Richmond in Round 1. On paper, Waimea should have the upper hand as they have the luxury of changing combinations if necessary. Prices however, have played some enterprising netball but have fallen short towards the end of the game. Should everything click for 60 minutes Prices could mount a serious challenge to Waimea. At 8.15pm Taylors Wanderers face an uphill battle with having lost Justine Battersby with a ruptured Achilles tendon when they meet Richmond Robbie’s Bar & Bistro. Richmnond have experience, height, skill and speed in all areas of the court.

FC Nelson ready for knock out football FC Nelson women’s team is preparing for the biggest game in its history, with an ASB Women’s Knock out Cup game against Christchurch side University at Trafalgar Park this Sunday. The team played out a nil-all draw with Marlborough Girls College on Sunday as part of the local competition but coach Matt Watkinson says his players are focussed on a big game this weekend, which is the equivalent to the men’s Chatham Cup. “The club offered us the opportunity and my long term agenda is to keep promoting the women’s game as much as possible. Plus, for the girls, I’ve had some of them for up to six years so it’s an opportunity to do something fresh and different.” He says the team has been trying to spread the word about their game so they can get as big a crowd as possible

to cheer them on. “It would be nice if people came down and cheered us on. My girls have worked very hard and I just want people to come and give us a shot and we’ll try and put on the best show we can.” The game is a “complete unknown” he says but that’s part of the thrill. “It’s the old box of chocolates thing, you don’t know what you’re going to get. It’s part of the fun.” Team manager Sasha Kerslake says the girls are excited about the match up. “They are all utterly thrilled and excited. I’ve been playing women’s football in Nelson since 1997, for a long time there hasn’t been that opportunity to take part in something like this until FC Nelson came along, so we owe them a big thanks.” The game kicks off at Trafalgar Park this Sunday at 2pm.

Tactix coach endorses supportive Nelson crowd Phillip Rollo Nelson might not have been a happy hunting ground for the EasiYo Tactix but coach Leigh Gibbs has endorsed the region's supporters. Following Sunday night's 64-55 defeat to the Perth-based West Coast Fever, the first time Trans-Tasman netball had been played in Nelson and just the second time the ANZ Championship has been played here too, Leigh says it is important to continue a relationship right across the Mainland region. "I'm still proud of what we put out there, even though it wasn't the result we were after, we just showed some fantastic netball and I'm sure the crowd enjoyed it," she says. "I want every young girl that's watching here today in the Tasman area to want to be a Tactic." Both 2013 ANZ Championship fixtures played

in Nelson sold out and Leigh says the noise was noticeable from the court. "The cheering, the enthusiasm and it was helped by the MC. It was a great atmosphere and it would've been fantastic if we could get more in." On the court, Leigh highlighted a weak second quarter as being the difference between the two sides. Having trailed 19-17 after the first quarter, the Tactix were outscored 13-8 in the second. "We turned over too much ball and we were scoring so well in that first quarter that it was like we hit a wall." With only two wins on the board this season, she was still hopeful the side could bank a few more to end the season on a high note. "We definitely don't want to settle on the two. But we're just looking at the game ahead so we're looking at the Thunder Birds in Dunedin next week and that won't be an easy game."
