the tie break, which the boys say was the toughest part, performing under pressure. Books and cash prizes were won on the day while the four boys also received $200 for winning. They also gain qualification in to the National competition where the win-

ner will battle international competition in Hamilton and get an allexpenses paid trip to the set of the Hobbit. Questions in the regional competition ranged from comic super heroes to authors of 18th century novels.

“I used to race athletics and I did it at school too. I used to do all the events.”

Nelson lines up Wallaby’s for world cup clash FROM PAGE 1 MP Nick Smith and mayor Aldo Miccio both issued statements last week saying they would do whatever they could to help bring another game to Nelson. Games that Nelson should be offering to host include the Italy v Australia match on 19 September and the Australia v Russia game on 1 October says Nick. “The relocation of the matches is a huge loss for Christchurch and I will

be making the point that Trafalgar Park is the second home of the Crusaders. Transferring games to Nelson has the advantage of being reasonably accessible to Canterbury’s thousands of rugby fans. “Working alongside the councils and Tasman Rugby Union I will be lobbying the Rugby World Cup Minister, the New Zealand Rugby Union and the IRB on the merits of Nelson hosting additional games,” he says. Aldo says Nelson has embraced the

Rugby World Cup and he is sure the community would be supportive of hosting more games. “Given that all matches unfortunately have to move from Christchurch, having two more pool matches played here also makes sense since Nelson is the home base for the Italians, and our close neighbour Blenheim is the home base for the Russians.” Rugby World Cup 2011 would not comment on whether Nelson had the inside running on hosting Australia.

NEWS IN BRIEF • Friends of the Library will celebrate its 20th birthday tomorrow with an afternoon tea at the Elma Turner Library in Nelson. Deputy mayor Ali Boswijk will help celebrate with the Friends.

• The capacity of Nelson’s Trafalgar Park for the Rugby World Cup has dropped from 20,000 to 18,000, announced Nelson City Council communication manager Angela Ricker on Friday. The drop in seats is due to the placement of a big screen and food vendors on the embankment. The drop will not result in any current ticket holders missing out. • Six jobs will go at Nelson Marlborough District Health Board it was announced last week. The move is part of the boards “Rutherford Initiative” which aims to cut $20million from its spending. The roles will be disestablished from July 1, 2011. However, affected staff will have an opportunity to apply for four new roles established in this area, and any other advertised roles at the DHB. • The NCC is due to adopt the draft annual plan at a council meeting this Thursday.

Breast cancer trust donates ultra-sound Increase Your Property Value! Anxious waiting times for breast cancer patients are set to drop significantly thanks to a brand spanking new ultra-sound machine. If someone discovers a lump on their breast it becomes a nervous wait at the Nelson Hospital. But a brand new high-resolution ultra-sound machine will detect the lump immediately and more accurately than any machine currently in the top of the South Island, cutting down on anxiety. The portability of the handbag-sized machine and the up-to-date technology now means the Nelson Hospital can equally provide the same breast cancer service to the same standard that any other city around the world could provide. The machine’s arrival is thanks to the Nelson Breast Cancer Foundation who raised $40,000 in just 12 months to significantly contribute to the purchase of the machine. The money was raised through a boot camp, donations, corporate do-

nations, a calendar and a silent auction. Breast and general surgeon at the Nelson Hospital Ros Pochin says the fundraising, particularly from the bootcamp, was extremely successful. “We couldn’t have done it without them. It’s all down to the trust and the public support. You want to make sure the people of Nelson get the same standard of care they would anyway in the country. This pushes that towards that.” The trust will retain ownership of the machine, although Ros will have control of the machine that will be used throughout the top of the South Island from Nelson through to West Coast and Blenhiem. The foundation is keen on future fundraising and Ros says two key areas future funding could go to would be an emergency fund for single adults unable to work and to subsidize pink palettes, a physio service for breast cancer patients.

NCC help fund Nelson trolley derby film The Nelson City Council is throwing its support behind a movie, to the tune of $70,000. Kiwi Flyer is a family feel good movie about the annual Trolley Derby down Collingwood St, aimed at an audience of 5-14 year-olds and is tipped to have significant economic spin offs for the city. Council agreed to give equity funding because of the projected financial benefits to the city at an off peak shoulder period.

Executive manager of community services, Susan Coleman, says the production will involve the employment of local actors, crew and support staff, accommodation, food, equipment hire and a raft of other goods and services. Script writer and director Tony Simpson says Torrent Films pre-production and filming is entirely on location in Nelson will take place over 10 weeks in April and May.

Drive sensibly and you can use 20 percent less fuel … and pocket the savings. That’s the upshot from Hyundai’s bold approach to last week’s AA Energywise Rally, which showed New Zealand could be $1.7 billion better off if we all played our part. Pie in the sky? That’s what the everyday Hyundai drivers thought before taking on the professionals over the tough four days driving from Auckland to Wellington and back. Everyone knows the eco-nuts can save buckets of fuel, but what about the average driver? The Hyundai driver and co-driver pairs all found a reduction in fuel consumption is not out of the question, even though conditions were atrocious on the grueling 1,770km rally route. Almost all of them managed to improve on the fuel efficiency factory rating of their vehicles, some nearly hitting the 20% improvement mark, with only 4 days of eco-driving experience up their sleeve by the end of the Rally. Beforehand, most were intimidated by the figures achieved by professional drivers, seeing those economy margins as out of reach. “Driving with fuel economy as a priority wasn’t something I’d thought about in the past; it was a totally new concept to me,” commented Sian Pro-

theroe, daily driver of a Hyundai and Hyundai pilot in the rally. “Looking at our results and how significantly we succeeded in increasing our fuel economy through being more aware of our driving style, means that there will be a change in my focus for the future.” Figures from Gull and the Ministry of Economic Development show New Zealand uses approximately $8.5 billion worth of fuel a year in road transport – meaning the nation could save $1.7b every year. “That’s the challenge we throw down to New Zealand,” said Tom Ruddenklau, Chief Operating Officer of Hyundai New Zealand. We chose to invite normal, everyday drivers to make up our rally team, just to see what is possible, and they surprised themselves. “This is not with absurdly miserly driving tactics, it’s just a matter of being sensible in the way we all go about our daily driving. And another positive spinoff: road safety also improves, at a time when the Police are promising another crackdown on speeding this holiday weekend. “Hats off to the Hyundai rally team for showing the rest of New Zealand what is possible,” said Mr Ruddenklau.

Dance crew excells at comps

Several Nelson dance crews has proved they can boogie with the best of them. Origin and Fuzion, two crews from Onset Hip Hop based at Fargher Academy of Dance, placed in the top three at the Street Dance New Zealand South Island and Wellington championships earlier this month. Nelson College for Girls student Lisa Dalziel, 17, is a member of Origin dance crew and says their result was a huge achievement. Origin missed out on first place by 0.01 points in the hotly contested varsity section, 13-17 year-olds, with a score of 7.29. The Wellington team that took out the varsity section, Emerge, represented New Zealand at the World Hip Hop Championships last year and are currently ranked ninth in the world. The judges described Origin’s two minute routine as powerful, high energy, creative and the whole package. Lisa says being involved in hip hop is a lot of fun, but it isn’t easy. “We train hard but play hard. It’s always good going to a competition knowing you’ve worked hard and you can get the rewards from working hard. It’s fun working hard up to a competition because we get to see how much we improve.”

Letters to the editor The closure of the Cable Bay Rifle Range, a valuable community asset, is very sad and a miscarriage of justice. This facility has been in operation for over 12 years, and in this time thousands of hunters have safely sighted in their firearms, students and novice shooters from local schools and NMIT have been taught gun safety and awareness by a fully qualified national range officer. Police from the entire top of the south region have been able to complete their six monthly firearms re-qualification, which is a national requirement, and hundreds of local duck shooters have been able to get their eyes in, before each season, by using the clay bird course at Cable Bay. There has been a rifle range in existence, on this very sight for over 100 years. Now, thanks to the deep pockets and arrogance of a few overseas arrivals, who have recently bought property in the area and who all knew the range was here before they moved to Cable Bay, but chose to ignore it, it is gone. It is a very sad day, when money dictates the right of every New Zealander to make a living for themselves, or to be able to fire a shot on their own rural property and foreigners are able to move into an existing area, and change the New Zealand rural environment to suit their own needs.

Thousands of goods were donated by people in the community and sold by volunteers on Saturday. “We had a wonderful morning with a large crowd and our 50 helpers working on the stalls were kept really busy,” says organiser Isabelle Jones. The annaul fair has been running for several years and keeps getting bigger with crowd numbers and donations at an all time high. ware, fruit and vegetables, wide range of books, electrical goods and lots of good quality children’s clothing. Something for everyone and diverse range of goods for sale. The $7200 will be split between Save the Children New Zealand and the Children’s Emergency Fund. Save the Children New Zealand originated in Christchurch in 1947 and has helped children and communities from around the world over the last 64 years and Isabelle says it seems appropriate that they can now focus on Christchurch and support their people. The Children’s Emergency Fund was created so Save the Children can respond to those who are most vulnerable when disaster strikes.

She was sold on the idea and six months since moving into the brand new Abbeyfield house in Tahuanui says she could not imagine moving out. “When I first heard about it I thought ‘that’s what I’ve been looking for, somewhere where I can be independent but have company’. Nelson’s iconic trolley derby is set to hurtle down Collingwood St this Saturday. The Robertson’s Trolley Derby celebrates the making and racing of trolleys down Nelson’s famous Collingwood St. The derby has always had a huge emphasis on families with grandparents, fathers, sons and daughters getting together to construct their trolleys each year. The event has been steadily growing annually from a small event to one with around 100 entries and a crowd of 3000 to 5000 spectators. Big Brothers Big Sisters will “run the crowd” on the big day. There will be other events on the day, including the Kids Design Challenge and “Have a Go”. An event sponsored by Classic Hits that will run on Manuka St. It is aimed at giving kids, 12 and under, a go on some very safe trolley for a gold coin donation to Big Brothers Big Sisters. The derby starts this Saturday morning at the top of Collingwood St.

A guide to throwing the best birthday parties eve When it comes to party time, it’s easy for parents to get stressed, blow the budget and vow never to do it “that way” again. Throwing a birthday party for your child should be fun for all. It just takes planning, a well-paced party schedule and a killer birthday cake. So whether you’re planning to hold the party at home or are contemplating outsourcing it to one of Nelson’s dedicated party venues, the advertisers on this page will give you loads of ideas for pulling off the perfect children’s birthday party. Have fun! Your primary goal is to make the birthday child feel special. A secondary goal is to ensure that everyone has a good time at the birthday party. The children will remember whether they had fun, not whether your house was spotless or whether you carried out your chosen birthday party theme down to the last tiny detail. Involve the children in party planning and preparation. Surprises are fun, but the kids like to get involved in planning, and this is a time when the kids are motivated to be especially helpful. Let them plan the location, guest list, menu, games, etc. They can write invitations or create them on the computer with fun computer paper, fill party bags, blow up balloons and decorate. Make the party manageable. It’s tempting to invite the whole classroom, but you’ll likely regret it. How long? One hour is more than enough time for a toddler or pre-school party. For older children two to three hours is recommended. Have a theme. Popular themes are kids favorite characters from the entertainment world. Invite Meredith from Face Painting Nelson along who can paint faces so the children are themed characters. Katrina at Alchemy Arts has a range of unique themed cake moulds to make that special cake and impress your guests. To get the party off to a good start, plan an ice-breaker game or activity that the kids can join in as soon as they arrive. Plan plenty of activities to keep them busy. For example a wacky relay. Teams compete in relays that include putting on dress up clothing and hats. Another version of this wacky relay is teams compete in stuffing balloons into extra large clothing. Or have a scavenger hunt for a party. You can make them as challenging as needed depending on the age. A Bouncy Castle from

Blast Entertainment will keep them occupied for hours. Always have back up plans, like rainy day alternative location and activ you’re having a party in the yard. Flossie the Balloon lady can work in or out. She will twist wonderful balloon creations for you and your g and help make your event truly memorable Older children may enjoy a summertime tent camp-out party in the yard, or keep them amused the whole day by hiring a Chair O Plane, ferris wheel, or hot rods from Nelson Mini Amusements. Have a party away from the home. Popular destinations include the Sk Rink, ASB Aquatic Centre, State Cinema and Just Parties who can tak of everything for you! 5 year-olds should have a big party, but remind them that this is becaus are the big “5,” and either starting school or just in school, and having a party will not happen every year.

Great games for 5-year-olds whether inside or ou are: 1. Hitting a Piñata that is full of lollies. 2. Relay races, which can be held in a garage, ca or park. 3. Water balloon fights if weather permits (an have advised the parents that the children are to get wet). 4. Dancing to music and “freezing” when the is stopped to see who looks the silliest (this is a game and everyone should win a party favor). 5. Pin the tail on the donkey (consider a gam uses Velcro instead of pins). No party is complete without presents. When it c to gifts you can’t go wrong with Edex Toys, wher will find a unique selection of toys for that special birthday boy or g Crackerjack Toys in the Farmers Arcade have just introduced a chil birthday register to ensure there are no birthday present double ups. Finally, children remember what they did at a party, much more than they ate, what the plates and napkins looked like or whether the hous spotless. Don’t sweat the little details!

• The Santa Regina made her first visit to the Port and will successfully replace the Monte Stello for Strait Shipping on the Wellington – Nelson return ferry service. • Four large container ships, 11 large fishing vessels either came in or left, several small fishing vessels and the Yacht Wild bought up from down south has come in for some refit work over six months. A big car carrier came and went, as did a fruit carrying cargo ship. • It was good to see the appropriate precautions were taken by the sailing clubs and responsible boaties last weekend after the Tsunami warning. Congratulations to all those involved. • I was fortunate enough to witness the Waimea College student’s sea swim across to Haulashore Island and around the inner lead. It is great to see Nelson’s future champions developing. Well done to all the students and the escorts for a well run event. • It was with surprise that I witnessed a small run about go within 200 m of Haulashore Island and then within 50m of some of the swimmers at a speed greater than 5 knots. I soon caught up with the occupant. • We have only spoken to a few people this week and whilst there are fewer people on the water it is gratifying to see the Harbour Master’s staff well received. • Please ensure you have the correct lights for your craft. Kayakers, rowing skiffs, take note. A torch or an all round white light for you. If in doubt- Don’t go out. Dave Duncan, Harbour Master/Marine Operations Manager.

Relaxercise is a new low impact exercise class designed for women as a fun and easier way to mind and body fitness. Sick of hearing herself and friends moaning about being unfit and stressed Caron decided it was time to face the fact, use it or lose it! I tried Yoga (too serious and I am not into chanting), Zumba, too frustrating, jogging…er no thanks and being an aerobics instructor in a former Caron Proctor life (too many jumping jacks). So I needed to take the elements I enjoyed and design a form of light, easy to follow, feminine, fun exercise. Movement is a great way of releasing emotionally imprisoned energy. Please join us at Fairfield House. I truly believe exercising with others can give you a double dose of stress relief, and the power of a group of like-minded woman can bring about a sense of purpose and belonging. Life may not be the party we hoped for, but while we are here we should dance.

Penny Rushton knows how to be successful in a man’s world. She used to own the Wakefield Hotel and is now proving to be a success at her latest venture – owning a furniture moving company, Prime Movers. After selling the Hotel she tried her hand at furniture removing and when she was presented the opportunity to buy the business just six months later she took it. She says since then work has been flowing in and she has quickly gained trust with her clients. “We seem to do a lot of piano moves and people are definitely picky about who moves their piano.” Penny says each job is quoted for individually, dependent on the access and how much there is to move. By considering Prime Movers for your forthcoming relocation, you are in trusted and reputable hands. Penny and the team are committed to ensuring a smooth and efficient move. Penny says she understands the stress and inconvenience moving can create. Her goal is to ensure a smooth and hassle free relocation that is of superior quality and value for money. She now offers optional extras such as house cleaning and lawn and section tidying. Prime Movers utilise packing materials and techniques to benefit their customer with a superior and informed service. Their reputation is built on satisfied customers recommendations says Penny. For more information call Penny on 545 7013

what does that saying really mean? The stallholders at the Nelson Farmers Market can tell you. Jeff, from Motueka Valley Organics explains “Organic apples with a Biogro certificate have neither sprays on the skins nor man made chemicals in the soil. We use seaweed instead”. Apples are better than a multi-vitamin pill. Jeff lists ‘Vitamins A,C,E,K, B1, B2, B3, B5 & B6, along with minerals potassium, phosphorous, sodium, fluorine, magnesium chlorine, iron copper, silicon”. All of which, when absorbed by natural means, in the correct quantities, by eating an apple, are good for us. “Then there are the cancer fighting flavanoids that produce antioxidants and pectin. Also at the Farmers Market, in Fashion Island every Wednesday afternoon, Jeremy Naylor specializes in little known apples with different tastes and heritage varieties such as Egremont Russet. Brent has nashi’s and apples and swears by their magnesium content, which is good for joints. Sue from Lowe’s orchards has apple juice as well.

Nelson Farmers Market is on in Fashion Island, off Morrison St between Hardy St and Selwyn Place, 12.00-4.30pm every Wednesday rain, hail or shine. At this time of violent earthquakes, devastating monster waves and terrifying nuclear radiation it can be difficult to focus on things more close to home. This time of year is the time to think about vaccinations against influenza. And immunisation will help anybody to survive the flu with less illness, fewer days off work and fewer complications. This can be achieved with a quick injection administered by your general practice team at Stoke Medical Centre. Winter and early Spring are the time when we start to see influenza. At this time of year we also begin to see many other viruses. There are about 200 viruses which will give sore throat, headache, nasal discharge and sometimes a mild fever. There are much fewer viruses that cause the flu and thankfully the flu is the least likely thing to cause infection, but it is the flu that is most likely to lead to complica-

tions leading to time off work, visits to the doctor, treatments in hospital and occasionally an assessment by the undertaker. The flu is different in some important ways. The flu comes on very rapidly. A person can go from feeling well to feeling so sick that they need to lie down within a matter of hours. The symptoms mentioned above will often be there but are usually less noticeable than the high fever, the headaches and the aches and pains which can happen in any or all muscles of the body. It is very common that the muscles around the eyeball are most affected which makes it painful to move the eyes. Vaccination is safe and well tolerated by most people. It is important to remember when having a vaccination that anything that occurs over the next few days might or might not be a reaction to it. The safety and side effects of the vaccination have to be determined objectively by a careful analysis of reported symptoms and this is done via a national network. Given the advantages of flu vaccination in preventing days off work and school, reducing complications and death, flu vaccination is generally recommended for almost all people, including children. Other ways of preventing the flu are equally good for preventing the other viruses that are more likely to affect us this winter and for this we have to remember that the viruses hitchhike, they don’t fly. We don’t get the flu by breathing in bad air but we do get the flu by picking it up from surfaces, shopping trolleys, desks at work etc and transferring these to our nose and mouth in the course of our day, particularly when we eat or drink. For this reason it is very important to wash our hands frequently either with running water or by using a sanitising hand gel. This should certainly be done every time we arrive home having been out in the public, also before eating, and when traveling one should do it as often as practicable.

Come here for the Vaccine and not for the Flu!

Nelson girls selected for New Zealand age-group touch teams IN BRIEF

Six local players have made New Zealand selection for a tour of Australia in September. Courtney Robinson - who was also named MVP for her grade joins Nelson College for Girls shool

mate Ellie Kershaw and Joel Harden of Nelson College in the under-15 mixed team. Rebecca Kersten, Nicole Drummond and Nayland College’s Michaela Matenga were selected for New Zea-

land under-17s. “These girls are on a pathway to higher level,” says Nelson Touch president Cyril Collier. Cyril hops their outstanding efforts carry through to senior level.

FooTbAll: AMI Nelson Suburbs midfielder Billy Scott leaves for Wellington this week where he will link up with former team mate Scott Henderson at Central Premier League side Western Suburbs. Billy was approached after their pre-season game in the capital and his experience will be irreplacebale for the side which lost 3-2 to Coastal Spirit in the Mainland Premier League on Saturday. The former Nayland College student was a member of the Canterbury United youth team. AThlETicS: Alex Jordan added another first placing to his long list of track titles with a win in the Open Men 4x400m relay at the Sydney Track Classic over the weekend. Blokes plan to fly through triathlon A group of Nelson men are proving their bloke-ness by dressing as fairies. Dave Tippett, Jacob Olykan and Duncan Francis are entering next month’s Blokes Day Out triathlon and plan to complete the course wearing red and black fairy outfits. The three friends say they are dressing up to try and win a $200 prize that will be donated to the charity of their choice if they win the best dressed award at the triathlon. Their chosen charity is the Red Cross’s Christchurch earthquake relief fund, for which they are also raising money by asking for donations from friends, businesses and neighbours.

While they plan to bring a bit of fun to the event they say they won’t be “holding hands” at the end of it, each wanting to beat the other. “We plan to complete the course together but we will be pushing ourselves and when we get towards the finish line it will be all on,” says Jacob. The Blokes Day Out is designed as an event where men can have a go at triathlon; people of all athletic abilities enter the race, including walkers. The three Nelson men say they hope to see a bit of competition in the dress up stakes. “It will be a bit embarrassing if we are

the only ones,” jokes Duncan. Race organiser Greg Dykzeul says there are still spaces available for people wanting to do the triathlon, in dress up or not. “The Blokes Day Out is a really supportive, fun race that caters for beginners to do the entire triathlon, people love it and keep coming back year after year, but we always welcome new competitors,” he says. For more information on the race in the Maitai Valley visit www.nelsonevents. co.nz or if you would like to donate money to the Red and Black Fairies visit www.fundraiseonline.co.nz/GoodwillFairies/.

ON TRACK: Alistair Adams on his way to winning the 400m at the Inter-schools athletics championships last week. Photo: Phillip Rollo.

Alistair on track for NZ champs Phillip Rollo As records tumbled around him, Nelson College's Alistair Adams' mind was only on one thing – winning. The former national bronze medalist was realistic in his approach to claim all three sprint disciplines at the NelsonMarlborough Secondary School Athletics Championship at Saxton Oval on Wednesday, except it didn't quite go to script. The 400m specialist was pipped at the finish line of the 100m by Waimea College's star athlete Brendon Barnett but he still eased to 200m and 400m glory and is riding a wave of momentum heading in to the New Zealand Track and Field Championship in Dunedin on March 25. "My goal was to win all three races because it was my last year at school. Mainly to win the 400m though so I can carry on to South Islands," he says. "That 100m destroyed me though. I was extremely gutted but he did beat me fair

and square." Alistair moved from Putaruru to Nelson with big wraps after his third placing in the junior boys 400m at the New Zealand Secondary Schools Championship in Hamilton, but has found the transition to Nelson unsettling going through three different coaches in as many years. A new personal best time of 51.2 seconds for the 400m this season has boosted the 18 year-old's confidence and he is back on track, ready to stamp his mark on the New Zealand athletics scene. He will get the chance to do that with the Tasman Tigers in Dunedin where he will compete in the 400m and run one of the middle legs of the 4x400m relay alongside Alex Jordan, Marlborough's Cody Thomas and rising star Joel Ross. "I'm just hoping to make the finals and definitely run a personal best." Dallas Bowden's U-15 1500m record was eclipsed by Nelson College's Josh Barry in a time of 4 minutes 27.7 seconds. Eleven records were broken at the first inter-college meet at the track.

NELSON SURVIVE SCARE: Galbraith Group Nelson halfback Loui Harvey clears the ball from the ruck in a 27-15 victory over Waimea Old Boys at Neale Park on Saturday. The heated affair came down to the wire with pacy centre Kim Bateman scoring off an intercept when the score was 17-15. The match also marked Andrew Goodman's return to the Nelson rugby scene. He completed the win with a trademark 50 metre penalty on fulltime. Photo: Phillip Rollo.

Stoke leaps into action STEPPING INTO 2011: Stoke division 1 centre Brenton Connell steps past his Riwaka marker in his sides 29-6 win during the first game of the year at Cooks Reserve in Riwaka on Saturday. Stoke have won the senior competition for the past two seasons. Photo: Andrew Board. Accessman Stoke’s senior rugby team picked up where they left off last year – winning. But new coaches Gary Alsop and Jason Hulena will not be reaching for the bubbly any time soon. Stoke’s second half effort over a team that did not compete in last year top flight would have them a little concerned, but it at least gives them something to work on ahead of this weekend’s clash against heated rivals Waimea Old Boys. Stoke’s second half errors, which cost them several try scoring opportunities could be put down to early season rust and enduring 80 minutes under a very hot Riwaka sun. Stoke dominated the entire match, sealing the win at half time and spending the majority of the second on attack. Dropped balls, forward passes and mis-

weekend. Gary says he is happy with his sides first up win and is looking forward to getting stuck into Waimea this weekend. “Rivalries are good, it adds to the flavour doesn’t it. We are pretty happy with where we are at and Waimea will be fired up after losing last week so it will be a tough match.” Meanwhile, with a mixture of ex Nayland College players, new recruits and a few of the more experienced players, the division 2 team started its season off at a frantic pace, in the curtain raiser to the senior team. Taking on an experienced Riwaka outfit Stoke fought well, but it also turned into a scrappy affair, eventually ending with a 28-12 loss. With a new coach coming on board this week, Stoke was happy to have the one-off services of last years’ coach Ernie Cunningham.

Champions again! Stoke/Nayland win another cricket crown

Stoke/Nayland are Kelvin Scoble one-day champions thanks to a man of the match bowling performance from skipper Ryan Edwards. Ryan was sitting on a hat trick late in the game after taking the prized wicket of Hot Mama's Motueka captain BJ Barnett. The 25-run win is even more significant to the club with the announcement club coach Andrew Cavill is departing to join the coaching staff at the Papau New Guinea national cricket team as

well as the passing of club stalwart Colin Aitken early this year, says Ryan. Paul Capstick smashed 76-runs with the bat to finish with a par tally of 196-runs on a slow wicket. But some impressive bowling by Ryan and Nathan Todd held Motueka to just 171-runs. Stoke/Nayland now head in to the final round of the Car Company one-day competition needing a win against Sprig & Fern Waimea Toi Toi United to cement another final berth.
