Concerns over quad bike safety Phillip Rollo
Authorities say they will take tougher measures to prevent further quad bike accidents, after yet another incident last week. The Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment has indicated that it will take a firmer line on safety breaches during its current nation-wide safety campaign, where spot checks are made to hundreds of farms across the country, because all workplace accidents are “concerning” and the figures are still too high compared to that of other farm vehicles. Its decision comes in the wake of numerous quad bike accidents across the country during the summer period, with the latest occurring last week when a 23 year old Rai Valley man was flown to Nelson Hospital after it was believed he crashed into a ditch.
According to the New Zealand Herald earlier this month, Wellington Coroner Ian Smith voiced frustration over the quad bike safety issues and called on the government to investigate making helmets, lap belts and roll bars compulsory. Nelson Weekly spoke with three local authorities to understand their concerns on how users could operate their machinery in a safer fashion and asked whether it really was that unsafe to ride a quad bike, despite there being zero on-farm quad bike related deaths in Nelson during the past five years. Carl Doocey from Morley’s Motorcycle and Marine said while wearing helmets saved lives, it was also up to the operator to use their common sense, which included the speeds it travelled at across the farm. Richmond Rodeo organisers are praising another top crowd, saying it went close to beating previous attendance records. Secretary Tina Angus-Phyn says the official number of tickets sold were yet to be counted, but feedback from the cowboys was very positive. “They said what a cool crowd Richmond was, they get involved, they just loved it,” says Tina. “From that aspect it was
probably a better crowd than ever before.” Tina admits seeing the spills is often a crowd favourite as dozens of the country’s top cowboys put their bodies on the line atop of some of the most bucking broncos and bulls around. “They want to see the action and see people live their dreams. Who wants to jump off a horse and wrestle a steer? It’s just amazing,” says the barrel racer.

Concerns over quad bike safety FROM PAGE 1
O’Donnell echoed his opinion and said lap belts and roll bars could be potentially more dangerous. Shane Harris, of Harris Training, knew there had been numerous near misses across the district and recommended that quad bike users speak to retailers and do “refresher” courses. Ona De Rooy, the MBIE’s general manager for health and safety operations, believes there is a disproportionate number of serious farm and fatal accidents taking place, which is why quad bikes have become the focus for the ministry. MBIE’s statistics for 2012 were yet to be finalised although Ona believed the number of accidents and fatalities would be around the average of five deaths and 850 accidents involved quad bike use on farms. Ona says there is often an increase in the number of accidents on farms during the summer
Quad bike safety trainer Shane Harris. because of the increased hours, and says that farmers and their workers need to be aware of the signs of stress and fatigue and how they can manage them appropriately. The ministry has a quad bike safety campaign under way which aims to reduce the number of people being hurt and killed by quad bikes on farms. As part of the campaign, health
and safety inspectors visit farms across the country to check farmers are using quad bikes safely. “There are four key safety steps that famers and anyone riding a quad bike needs to focus on; always wear a helmet; ensure the rider is experienced enough for the job; choose the right vehicle; and never let kids ride adult quad bikes.” The ministry’s quad bike safety campaign started in 2011 and its inspectors have been taking an education and engagement approach up till this point. This year the focus will shift to enforcement with inspectors taking a firmer line on safety breaches, especially where breaches are found during follow-up visits. During the spot checks some safety issues have been found with 642 improvement notices and written warnings being issued between July 2011 and December 2012 and there has been a 200 per cent increase in helmet sales.

New York dream teetering Andrew Board When aspiring actress Claudia Peters was selected from 1000 of the world’s top young drama students to attend the prestigious New York Conservatory of Dramatic Arts on a full scholarship she thought all her dreams had come true. But the cost of living in New York – a cost not covered by her scholarship – could shatter that dream. Claudia was a Nelson College for Girls student when she was one of only two people from the South Island selected in the New Zealand team to compete at the World Championships of Performing Arts in Los Angeles last year. She fundraised to attend the champs, featuring 1000 students from around the world, and was one of only ten people to be selected for the scholarship, worth US$10,000 per year. She says that moment was exciting and thrilling. “I literally just collapsed into my friend’s lap and started crying. I ran back to my hotel room, got my Dad to call me and we just screamed on the phone for 15 minutes. It was just… ah… so exciting. It was my dream come true.” But then came the costs. Because of visa restrictions, Claudia is not allowed to work in the US when she is there studying and living costs are $53,000 per year. Since finishing school in November, Claudia has been working to save money and her father and other family have been sponsoring her. So far she has around $20,000 saved but

Plenty of wind for annual kite festival

Hundreds of kites flew high in the sky on Sunday as part of the 22nd Annual Kite Festival held in Nelson. Organiser Gretchen Howard says the event was a huge success with a few thousand people attending the event held at Neale Park. She says although a southerly wind made it hard for some kites to fly, the clear blue sky made for great viewing. The event is held each year for the community to enjoy the colourful show which featured kite enthusiasts from around New Zealand and some from overseas. Gretchen says a highlight amongst spectators was the huge variety of kites, from whales, teddy bears, sting rays and a 12 metre rotating kite. James McKeown and Daniel Blair were amongst those who brought their own kite along to fly. “It’s a great show. There should be more of this kind of thing in Nelson,” says James.

After a whiff of our wine
International experts coming to smell and taste Nelson’s top plonk Phillip Rollo Nelson’s aromatic wine industry will be the focus of international media next month when a symposium is held in Upper Moutere. A select group of the world’s most influential wine commentators will descend on the region following the Pinot Noir 2013 conference in Wellington. In Upper Moutere they will taste, compare and discuss locally created aromatic wines, which Nelson Wineart manager Gisela Purcell believes could lead to more exposure. “It’s kind of indirect marketing. It’s a real coup to get these people to come to Nelson so we need to make it worth their while,” she says. “It’s a fantastic opportunity to educate them on the whole region and it’s a really good opportunity at a high level to create more awareness.” Aromatic refers to certain grape varieties that have a “really nice aroma,” she says. Those white grape varieties include riesling, gruner veltliner and pinot gris. “Often the smell is quite different from the taste and it’s a key fea-

Appleby wool shed still has character After half an hour of circling her childhood home for the first time in at least 20 years, Barbara Harford finally admitted that it still had some character. But the Atawhai resident still prefers to think of the happy memories growing up in it, labelling its current state as “sad”. The house in question has been a run down, abandoned wool shed for some time now. It is situated on the Appleby Straight and was bought by the Harford family in 1919 as part of a 175 acre block. Its “character” has made it one of the most photographed buildings in the entire region. Last week Nelson Weekly spoke with its owner Robert Morrison, who bought the property for its horticultural and agricultural purposes. It is currently leased out to SnapFresh, although the house still stands. Robert said unless there was some sort of

It was a wonderful home and now it’s a wreck so why would I?” she says. “I find it quite sad really.” Barbara, who lived in the house with her parents Arthur and Alice and brother
David, is also bemused at why it is so popular for photographers. “If it was me and I had my photo taken here then I’d think of the happy days and the happy memories but people off the road don’t know any of that so why do they come? I can’t understand it.” Barbara knew the home was in a poor state

since it had been used as a wool shed, so was not surprised by its condition when looking around on Monday. The Weekly has fielded numerous calls from locals interested in the home and one of those, Val Evans of Stoke, says her grandparents, Alfred Thomas Silcock and Sarah Jane Silcock, lived in it for a short time as they hoped to farm there in the early 1900s. When Val’s grandmother lost her voice, the doctor recommended she headed for higher ground and the house was sold. She had known all along that the Appleby home was where her grandparents came to from Reefton and one day stopped off and spoke to a “Mr Harford” about the history of it. “I can relate to the fact I wouldn’t like having people come park on my front lawn and take photos and I asked his permission to take some,” says Val.

Warwick Marshall celebrates 50 years as a member of the Nelson Lions this May but the organisation has beaten him to the punch and awarded him its highest honour before the anniversary. Warwick says he was working away in the back of his house a week before Christmas when his wife called him to their living room, saying he had guests. He walked in to find all of his children, including a daughter who lives in France and members of the Nelson Lions. He was then awarded the Melvin Jones Fellow award, the highest award in the international movement. He says he was beyond shocked. “I was utterly speechless, completely shocked. Outdoor theatre proves popular Sinead Ogilvie Nelson’s Outdoor Summer Theatre actors performed to their biggest opening night yet on Friday and hundreds more are expected to watch the adapted take on Oscar Wilde’s 19th century comedy, ‘The Importance of Being Earnest’. Director Lisa Norriss says the annual outdoor show, put on by local theatre company Body in Space, is always well attended and proves more popular every year. She says the combination of great actors, being able to bring along a picnic and the outdoor setting make the shows a huge success. “People love it, it’s a beautiful atmosphere here with the trees. It’s a bit of comedy and a bit of socialising.” Kath Searle says it was the first time she had attended the Outdoor Summer Theatre and she was very impressed. “I think it’s fabulous. It’s absolutley hilarious and very well done.” The performances will continue every night this week from 6.30pm at Fairfield House and donations are encouraged. The last show of the season will be held this Friday.

Organiser Gemma Laing says the workshops aimed to inspire. “We want them to be challenged, have fun and learn new things.” Photo: Andrew Board.

Old house in Appleby: Hey, I was just flicking through the Nelson Weekly when I came across a piece about the "most photographed house”, the old wool shed in Appleby. I thought you guys might like to know the story behind that famous heart in the window. When I was about 12 years old, my two friends Liam and Alex and I were messing around in the old wool shed, as kids do we were making a mess of things.
I was drawing the heart in the window, which back then was my trademark on everything! I looked up to see two men and a women coming towards the shed my heart started pounding and we ran out the back as fast as we could. Unfortunately they caught us, scared the living crap out of us saying they were going to put us in their car and take us back to my mum and tell the police to charge us. You can just imagine the terror right? Haha well still to this day I’ve never heard from the police and Mum found the funny side of it. Samara Anderson.

Nelson bitching about parking, that's rich haha compare the situation to the rest of the country. Sam Shutts. The new buses are lovely but the timetable is still not user friendly for people working. I agree that parking presents a challenge. Valerie Fitzsimons. I'm sure if its raining people don't really want to walk/bike, yeah it may be cheaper than Wellington but most of our wages are less. Lisa Fry. What are people really complaining about here? Are people's feet painted on? A bit of a walk won't likely hurt, infact it will probably be good. We are quite lucky that we have so much free parking so close to the CBD. Perhaps a monthly rate could be available for those who are willing to pay for it? Lisa De Gray. It's not just in the CBD - try finding a park at the hospital or up by the colleges when schools in - the boys college is the worst as it seems most of the hospital staff park up there now. Sue. Kite festival: Hey Nelson Weekly, you should come down and take a photo at the kite festival. Looks cool. Feedback on our KFC story: KFC Tahuna is disgusting always poor service very slow and always get cold food!!! Jess Brougham.
The facility is disgusting! Unkempt tables, filthy floors and bathrooms. I’d hate to imagine what’s behind the counter. Shontelle Edwards. Went there for lunch yesterday waited in drive thru for over 30 minutes. Not sure when the improving is meant to start? Kimberley Saunders. Families like ours remember how good KFC's food and service used to be many years ago. So about once a year we stupidly go back there deluding ourselves that it will once again be worth our time and money, and every time it is the same! Massive waiting times to get yuck food and mediocre service. Nikki Millar. They need to fire everyone and start completely fresh. It's disgusting and their staff are dirty and rude! Nikole Berkett. Uncooked chicken?? I worked there for three years, the chicken goes in the cookers and then a button is pressed and its opened when the buzzer goes off I don't believe that there was uncooked chicken. Old KFC worker (via website). Yeah its as easy as just waiting for the buzzer to go off but you'd be surprised at how many staff have no patience and pull the chicken early from the cooker. That happens a lot. (via website). We received around 150 comments on our KFC story, thanks to all who contributed.

Students prepare for next step Local 16 or 17 year olds unsure about their next step after school can make the most of Tasman Nelson Youth Service. The free service provided to local students who have recently finished college or a training course offers advice and support in making their next move. Manager Pip Berkett says the service is a great way for youth to find a sense of direction, meeting with
youth coaches to talk through a plan to reach their goals, what they are and how to get there. “It is about building the skills you need to ultimately find a job and have an independent future,” she says. Pip says Youth Service is there to help and include practical advice such as applying for training courses, gaining a drivers licence, obtaining more NCEA credits,
writing up a CV and finding work experience. Pip says all youth are encouraged to contact Tasman Nelson Youth Service for further help into education, training or employment. Tasman Nelson Youth Service Youth Coaches are based in both Richmond and Nelson and also offer a mobile service too. For more information phone 544 2499 or 0800 587 225.

Beach just as popular then as now Tahuna beach is the place to be in the summer and it appears it’s been that way for at least 90 years. A photo from the Nelson Provincial Museum’s glass plate collection shows crowds of people at the beach, although the swimwear from the 1920s to today has changed significantly. Nelson in the 1920s was a city with no television, internet or air travel. The first radio transmission was broadcast from Dunedin in 1921, the head of state was King George V. In 1928 New Zealand won its first medal at an
Olympic Games, Nelson man Ernest Rutherford was appointed to the order of merit and pavlova was reported to have been invented by a Wellington hotel chef. The estimated population of New Zealand was 1.4 million and in 1929 the Murchison earthquake struck, destroying the town and some buildings in Nelson city, including Nelson College. Despite all that has changed over the past 90 years it seems summer in Nelson was still spent with a day at Tahuna beach.

There’s no better time to take the first steps to healthy living than right now. Before you throw yourself into the year ahead make sure you take time to look after what’s really important, you and yours. Whether it’s kick starting a healthy eating plan, dipping your toes into a new exercise routine or simply taking better care of you and your family, a range of locally owned Nelson businesses offer great ways to look after yourself and live a better lifestyle. Whether you fill the fridge with fresh fruit and veg, get out in the fresh air or find time to yourself to relax and unwind, small changes to the way you live will see you come out looking and feeling better for it. Clive Hair Clinics have been providing hair loss treatments for over 50 years & have noted around 50 % more clients seeking treatments compared with 5-10 years ago, the increase in female clients, being particularly noticeable, making up over 40% of clientele. The most common conditions treated are genetic baldness; diffuse loss and alopecia (see www. cliveclinics.co.nz). There are a great number of misconceptions about hair loss including that hair loss only affects men or elderly people. However in
reality men usually start showing signs of baldness in their 20s, whereas women do not usually start losing hair till their 30s. By their 40s, around 40% of men are going bald while women do not usually suffer hair loss in such numbers till they reach their 50s. Whatever the cause of the hair loss the earlier that treatment is started the better the results. If you are suffering hair loss or scalp problems you can contact Clive Clinics on 0800 40 89 03 for advice.

Gr wing Things
With Robyn Hollis
As I start this column I am reminded of an old saying (yep…I’m full of them) “be careful what you wish for…”. This comes to mind as we have been wishing for rain, all of us, for some time now and I am thinking that, after having just come in from a very wet and windy walk with Cruze and having to literally wade through the water in the driveway, that we have been granted our wish!! It is absolutely great to get such a rain but does he have to send it all at once? I knowwe are never happy so we will take what we get and stop with the whinging already, and I will go out soon and rescue what’s left of the flattened beans and soggy lettuce and keep planting more of both in the lovely wet soil. Things are almost back to normal in the Hollis household and I have to say that the “outside kitchen” has been getting a real thrashing since it’s timely installation. As the weather was damp and it is under cover, I used it to make my first jam of the season with some beautiful blackcurrants given to me by my lovely neighbour Judy. “Lady Bountiful” arrived with a large bag of these delights and very purple hands, so having done all the hard work the least I could do was make the jam. Another neighbour phoned to say that the plums needed to be harvested or the wind and the birds would get the lot. They had left a ladder placed near the tree so, braving force 9 winds, I climbed up and gathered the 6lbs or so needed for the first batch of plum sauce. Quite a hair raising feat for one who is not good on ladders! The sauce was also made on the outdoor gas top and the smell of vinegar just wafts away over the fence. I am now feeling very virtuous as the first bottles of the season are on the pantry shelves. I think I have told you that we have family living in the Ukraine. They celebrate Christmas over there on January 7 and
we got a call to say that all gifts etc had arrived and were under the tree so we decided to celebrate their date as well. Our friends next door had invited us for tea on the evening of the 6th and said they were game to help us in this, so over we went, dressed up in our Ukrainian shirts and armed with a bottle of the best Honey Vodka. The tradition is that you toast everyone at the table – we felt that this was a bit over the top as there were 6 of us and the Vodka packs a punch – so we all had a toast (or several toasts – I am not quite sure) to our family in Yavoriv and had a great Christmas Eve!! Now, the reason for this bit of a ramble is that I found a couple of recipes for making fruit liqueurs and thought you may like to use these if you have an excess of blueberries or rhubarb. Mirtillino – This is an Italian Liqueur made from blueberries. 200 grams of blueberries 50 grams of sugar 500 mls Vodka With the help of a funnel put the blueberries, sugar then the vodka in a bottle. Leave in the sun for a few days until the sugar dissolves, then store in a dark place for at least one month. Serve in small glasses as a cocktail and add a few boozy blueberries as a garnish – This is a lovely base for a long drink also, with lots of ice. Rhubarb Liqueur – Used as a digestive or an aperitif. 500ml water 200 grams sugar A few drops of lemon juice 200 grams of rhubarb cleaned and cut into 5cm pieces. 500ml Vodka Boil the water with the sugar and lemon juice until the sugar has dissolved. Add the rhubarb pieces and bring back to the boil. Simmer approx 2 minutes then remove the rhubarb pieces. (Use these in a dessert or on cereal). Let the syrup cool completely and then add the Vod-

ka. Store in a litre jar or bottle for one month in a dark place. Filter through a muslin cloth and store in the fridge. This is also good served as a tall drink with tonic and ice. I know this is supposed to be a garden column but it is always fun to try out new ways of using what you grow.
Tips
Thisks wee
• Keep deadheading all summer – a good job to do in the cooler part of the evening and very satisfying seeing all the extra flowers that are produced. • After the hot winds we have had, trim off the dried up or dead leaves from shrubs and perennials to help them shoot new growth. • Summer prune wisterias. Just remove all the tentacles making sure you don’t cut them back too hard. If the plant is setting too many seed pods it is not putting its energy into producing next season’s buds. • Roses need a feed now to keep them going through summer. They can also be mulched to retain ground moisture (we have had a bit of that recently…) so keep it in the ground and add extra potassium and magnesium as well. • Don’t forget foliar feeding for the entire garden at this time- the good old Seasol and Powerfeed combo is great for all plants. Only do this late in the evening or early morning before the sun hits the plants, and they will love you for it. • If you have a spray regime – keep it up. After this wet spell fungal diseases will be prevalent so skim milk and water 1/10 is a good deterrent. Enjoy your garden, and make the most of the long summer days ahead.

Just last month there were thousands of berries being picked at Daelyn. Fast forward a few years and all of that could be swapped with cyclists racing around a new velodrome. According to Nelson City Council’s principal adviser for reserves and community facilities, Andrew Petheram, the land was bought off owners John and Lyn Sutton by the Tasman District Council and was then leased back to the pair. That lease contract had since run out, which meant work on the next stage of expansion at Saxton Field could begin. That expansion includes a cycle velodrome, a third entrance and concert space which could double as sports fields. “The front piece is for the cycle velodrome and then the area behind will be an area of open

space, which could be used for sports grounds and concert space,” says Andrew. The proposals for the expansion were in the TDC’s long term plan for 2014/15, but when he double checked, they were not in the plans for the NCC. The last upgrade to the Saxton Field sports complex was a second entrance on Main Rd Stoke and the next stage will be the third one, which comes out onto Champion Rd in Richmond. Andrew says feedback from the new entrance had been “very positive,” although the benefits were not likely to be fully seen until the winter sports season begins. “On a Saturday morning it will be a really positive move and that’s why we want to expand it out to Champion Rd too.”

SPORT Stoke/Nayland win T/20 title Phillip Rollo Stoke/Nayland are the new holders of the Colin Aitken Twenty20 Trophy, although stand-in skipper Alex Coles believes a representative fixture in Buller went a long way in deciding the title before the match even started. Taylor's Contracting Wanderers were without Daniel Cooper, Connor Neynens and Joe O'Connor. Car Company Stoke/Nayland were also without bowlers Marty King, Darius Skeaping and Ryan Edwards, but it was one of the replacements, Angus Riley, who played a key part in the result. The Nelson Giants big man showed his versatility as he collected four wickets en route to a ten run victory, decided in the third to last ball of the match. Hayden Ingham was the last man out, run out on 38 runs. Stoke/Nayland started brightly with the bat as Paul Capstick, Ben Homan, Jacob Beleski, Todd Marwick and Brendan Hodgson all made contributions towards the 161/7 scoreline. But it was the ten runs from tail ender Mitchell Ross that appeared to be the difference. He hit a six and a four in the final two balls. Alex was confident a score of 161 runs would be enough for victory. "It's a crazy game, to have a guy hit ten runs off the last two balls and then to win that amount. We lose rep guys but we have guys come in that are just as good at Twenty20," he says. Alex admits it is difficult playing a final on the same day as a representative fixture but that Wanderers had the worst end of it. "When you've got someone like Gus come in, because he's so big he's tough to pick and tough to play. It definitely affected them more." This was the first time Stoke/Nayland had won the shortened format, losing last year's final to Athletic College Old Boys. Alex says the trophy is important to the club because Colin Aitken was a patron of Stoke/Nayland. "With his wife coming down to watch it was pretty big for us." All of the teams will now take part in the one day competition and the Kelvin Scoble Trophy, with Stoke/Nayland set to host Wanderers at the Marsden Rec this Saturday. In other matches Wakatu host ACOB and Motueka host Waimea Toi Toi United. Alex believes if Stoke/Nayland’s batsmen can start brightly and build partnerships then they should be able to carry their twenty20 form across to the 50 over game.

Tonight's 5km in the Sprig & Fern Six O’clock Summer Series is their next important pace workout with the following Tuesday’s 10km the real test and guide as to what each can expect when they stop the clock in Westport on February 9. Both were a second adrift with Leonard adjudged the winner of a complimentary entry into the Kaiteriteri Gold Half Marathon after the tape was checked and fractions applied. Fishing comp a whopping success Sinead Ogilvie
IN BRIEF MoUnTAin biking: A newly developed map board and accompanying brochure has put the spotlight on the many mountain bike tracks that have been developed in the Codgers Mountain Bike Park at the top of the Brook Valley. Mapping out the trail network has been an ongoing project for the Nelson Mountain Bike Club, using council’s GIS information, which is available on the Top of the South Maps website. The club then went to the next stage, designing and installing the map boards, with Mark Holmes and Cathy McBride, keen club members and owners of local company Photomap, doing the technical work for the map board design. Nelson City Council has now used this information to create a Codgers Mountain Bike Park information brochure. Free copies of the brochures including the detailed maps are available from the council office and all local bike shops. They can also be downloaded from the council website and the Nelson Mountain Bike Club website. SpEEDwAY: Nelson's Thomas Stanaway has capped off the best week of his young racing career, finishing in third place at the NZ Grand Prix in Christchurch over the weekend, his second podium finish in as many weeks. Thomas also finished third at the NZ Champs held in Nelson the week before and was the best of the Nelson drivers at the Woodford Glen track. Palmerston North's Adam Joblin won the GP with Scott Hewson finishing second.
Fishers big and small, from the seasoned to the young took part in the McCashin's Motueka RSA fishing competition over the weekend, weighing in huge kingfish, scallops, crayfish and spotties on Sunday. The annual fishing competition is in it’s 13th year and saw over 230 entries, from all over the Nelson, Tasman and Golden Bay region. Motueka RSA Fishing Club president Murray Hyde says some great weather over the weekend contributed to the competition’s success, with a lot of people checking the forecast during the week before entering. “The great weather played a big part over the weekend. But even when it’s not so good, people still seem to show up to weigh in.” Mark Nicholls and his 6.6kg snapper won the heaviest snapper category and a huge kingfish caught by Jason Manson of Motueka weighing in at 20kg was the heaviest of the day. Justin Scott caught the heaviest kahawai at 2.26kg and the winner of new category 'the big three' Mark Williams took home $500 worth of Richmond Mall vouchers with his 1.78kg snapper, 0.64kg gurnard and 2.04kg kahawai. Rowan Young of Motueka took out the biggest crayfish with a 4.22kg whopper caught from the Abel Tasman and Murray says while it was a standout there were a lot of crayfish and some top contenders for the prize, with entrant Wylie Williams donating six crayfish to the fish auction which sees all proceeds go to Nelson Marine Radio. Murray says the fish auction is always a highlight of the weekend and the large number of crayfish and snapper donated saw double the amount of money raised from the auction last year, with over $1500 taken in. “It was very successful, we are very pleased to be donating that to such a good cause, Nelson Marine Radio keep us all safe out on the water and they are self funded.” The kids enjoyed a best hat competition, spot prizes and all junior entrants

He says he’s taken part in the competition before and thought it was “heaps of fun with good prizes.” Nelson local Keith Baker caught two

big crayfish off the Boulder Bank, one weighing 3.7kg and one at 3.9kg. He says he thoroughly enjoyed the competition and thought it was a great community event. “I think it is a great idea, it’s very family orientated and every last kid gets a prize. It’s bloody marvellous.” Murray says a range of sponsors came on board from the Nelson and Waimea region this year and the competition was well supported by local businesses.

Jordy on the right track He might only be ten years old but Jordan Stirling-Rowling is lightning quick. Walking into the Saxton Oval athletics track with his three South Island Colgate Games gold medals draped around his neck, the quietly spoken Richmond School student was feeling pretty happy with himself after a very successful weekend in Invercargill. Jordan collected gold medals in the ten year old boys 100m, 200m and 400m finals, which was more than he expected leading up to the biggest event of its kind for young athletes. "Before we went there I thought the 400m was his best event and I thought he could win gold and that but the other two were going to be pretty close," says his father Nigel Stirling. "But they didn't get near him. It was like [New Zealand 400m champion] Alex Jordan racing here, he was just too good. He left them for dead." His 100m time of 13.52 seconds is a new personal best as was his 200m time of 28.66 seconds. He ran the 400m in 68.82 seconds but says there were "gale force" winds down the back straight. Jordan has been doing athletics for four years now, despite his young age. During his earlier years he was attending junior club nights and was being trained by his father. Now under the guidance of sprint coach Dennis Kale and regularly taking part in Athletics Nelson's Twilight Series meets, Nigel believes Jordan's sprint career has developed immensely over the past six months. "I'd like to put in a special mention for Dennis and his training. He's improved two seconds in the 200m this year, which is crazy. He's learnt a lot and that's what has got him home." Jordan has been competing at senior meets ever since last year's Harold Nelson Classic – a competition that included junior events. "We came along, paid the five dollar entry fee, which I said was the best five dollars you could ever spend, and he raced against the senior girls. It was good experience in front of a big crowd. He wasn't going to beat them straight away but in life when you get more experience you can only get better, can't you?" Jordan says he is targeting three more gold medals at next year's South Island Colgate Games in Timaru and that he was looking forward to the coming rugby season. Falcons score first youth league win at home Phillip Rollo Top of the ASB Youth League's southern conference on goal differential, New Zealand King Salmon Nelson Falcons head coach Davor Tavich believes the side's confidence is playing a big part in the successful beginning. "I think there will be some teams taking notice of us now." Speaking just moments after the Falcons dispatched YoungHeart Manawatu 8-0 at Trafalgar Park in front of another healthy crowd, Davor says the team will look to play in a similar vein in Wellington this weekend. "They're all tough games but we're just going to take another positive approach into this weekend and hope for a result," he says. During his short post-match discussion with Nelson Weekly, Davor was handed a blank certificate for man of the match. It didn't take long for him to say who's name he was writing on it. "Dan [Grimshaw]." After scoring five goals to make him the competition's leading goal scorer, would you blame him? "Anybody that scores five goals is going to be man of the match in my books." The Falcons forward had bagged four of his five goals in the opening 33 minutes and could have scored more had he not picked up an injury while putting his fifth past the opposition keeper. Blenheim's Tore Waechter scored two goals after another impressive showing in the middle of the park
while Niall Young knocked in the eight goal after an initial shot from substitute Sam Maxwell. Davor says the side looked to pick up the intensity after a slow start against Canterbury United last week. "We applied a lot of pressure on Manawatu from the first minute and that was the plan. Any mistake they made, we wanted to use it against them. We were very strong at the back yet again. Obviously they didn't score a goal and I'm really proud of that actually." He didn't think Manawatu was a particularly poor side, he just thought the Falcons punished every mistake that was made. "Once you go 1, 2, 3 goals up it's really hard for them to come back. I think any any game scoring eight goals is a big achievement, especially in a national league." For the second week in a row, Davor and his assistants will have to make a decision on who will replace a departing centre-back, with Fox Slotemaker heading back to Auckland. Last week Erik Panzer played his first and final game for the club. It will be a tough ask with Davor highlighting Fox as a standout from Sunday. Vice captain Harry Tod-Smith seems the obvious choice after he replaced captain Mark Johnston in the second half. However, the team to travel to Wellington would not be officially signed off until later in the week. After beating Canterbury United 4-2 on Sunday, Team Wellington should be a much tougher opposition than Manawatu.
