How Jack Inglis Beat the System
Jack Inglis is a name most who live in this area will know. Motueka’s hospital is named after him - the Jack Inglis Friendship Aged Care and Rest Home. The story of how Motueka’s hospital was saved from being closed in 1992 is a story that Jack himself has decided to put into print. His book entitled ‘How I Beat the System’ tells his life story and how he and the Friends
of Motueka Hospital Trust managed to save the hospital from closure, raising millions of dollars, and turning it into a ‘state of the art health facility’ for Motueka and the district. Motueka’s Community Hospital was opened on 20th June 2009.
Over a period of three years Jack has worked with Charlotte Squire to write his memoir, “The story of how the hospital came
to be built has never been told, how it’s been paid for,” Jack says, “Peter Talley and I are the only ones left who know about it from the beginning. If it’s not told or documented no one will ever know. I’ve never told the story before, how no-one was ever paid, we did it for nothing.”
Jack has been the initiator or ‘at the helm’ of many local fundraising efforts through-
out the area, raising funds for Motueka Golf Club, Riwaka Rugby Club; gigantic pumpkin growing for Riwaka School, and other charities. Even as far south as Christchurch where he raised funds with a golf tournament for Ranui House, where he and his late wife Anne stayed while she was undergoing cancer treatment.
He was ‘a driving force behind the Kaiteriteri Domain’,
serving on the Domain board for 18 years. But his greatest achievement he says was to get the hospital built and solely owned by the community. At this stage, Jack has only published 60 copies of his memoir and these he is giving to friends and organisations he has been involved with over the years. There are a number of copies at Motueka’s Jack Inglis Friendship Hospital.

Connecting with our sea at Kaiteriteri to celebrate Sea Week
To celebrate Sea Week during 4-12 March, Lower Moutere teacher and trustee of Tasman Bay Guardians, Vicki Karetai organised Mana Whaitake –‘Worth it, Connecting to our Sea’ for 11 schools in the district. 260 students from Motueka South, Brooklyn, Dovedale, Tapawera, Lower Moutere, Ngatimoti, Mahana, Tasman, St Peter Chanel, Motueka Steiner School and St Paul’s in Richmond took part in a day of fun, learning and connecting with our sea.
The day was sponsored by Kaiteriteri Recreation Board.
It involved 25-minute sessions of different activities, sciencebased and exercise rotating through nine stations set up on Kaiteriteri Beach, at the estuary, and at the Kaka Pa. Tasman
Bay Guardians ran a species identification activity taking freshwater and estuary samples; there was beach art and a sandcastle competition, bird identification, beach games like Maui Matou. Glenis Paul from the New Zealand Marine Studies Centre at the University of Otago took the session at the estuary looking at the inter tidal zone – how do the species survive and thrive?
At the lookout, Whaea Tania Corbett explained to students the local history and stories of the area.
And at Breakers Bay, students from Motueka High School’s Environment Group were the experts and led Beach Bingo.
As well, there were four other stations at Little Kaiteriteri where 42 year 7 & 8 students
had a two-hour snorkelling experience.
Tasman Bay Guardians had this experience utilising wetsuits and the students were taught to snorkel, briefed and then snorkelled around Torlesse Rock.
“There were defi-
nitely a number of highlights of the day,” says Vicki.
Students provided feedback such as their enjoyment at sharing with the volunteers who care for injured penguins, listening to the activity and way of life for early Maori,
Students enjoyed a variety of activities as they celebrated Sea Week.
the excitement of discovering critters and seeing the creatures living on the rocks.
Vicki is now looking ahead and planning more activities to celebrate and connect with our sea for next year, giving more students the opportunity.

Calypsoblues singerguitarist at Chanel Arts
Cult UK/Auckland calypso-blues singerguitarist Tom Rodwell appears in concert solo at the Chanel Arts Centre this Friday, 24 March (7.30pm); he’s toured internationally since 2003, worked as a session musician and collaborator with the likes of Don McGlashan, Lonnie Holley and Robert Lamm (Chicago). He and his band have supported a wide range of blues-roots acts including Blind Boy Paxton, Trinity Roots, Derek Trucks (The Allman Brothers), John Butler Trio, and Kitty, Daisy and Lewis. His most recent record was named as one of top recent albums by the NZ Listener’s Graham Reid. “The subtle and supple shapeshifting “Wood & Waste” reveals depths and delights at every turn,” he wrote. And Auckland student radio 95bFM jazz show host Blind Mango Chutney called “Wood & Waste” the “Best-sounding NZ LP of the last 30 years.”
Tom says you could pigeonhole his music as unconventional, funky roots & rhythm & blues music.
“I write to please myself almost entirely, and make stuff that suits my taste as a listener - so my songs really work as part of a continuum of that kind of music. But I’m also an improviser, so a lot of the ‘story’ of the show is only uncovered in real time at the gig,” says Tom. “Practically what that means is that I’ll probably do a couple of newer songs from recent recording sessions - the best place to write - and draw on a list of weird covers I enjoy.”
Tom says he has very catholic tastes, and he likes a real breadth to a musical journey - and thinks it’s important to include a lot of different emotions or vibes in a concert, even subversive, unserious emotions. So he does versions of calypso music, kooky early rock, and what he calls hard blues - the minimalist stuff without too much period filigree, and his songs fit nicely in there.
But the music is the focus - with Tom working on building up a sound and then seeing what lyrics fit.

Motueka local Jessica Fowler (nee Satherley) has supported countless clients regain their movement and improve their physical wellbeing using physiotherapy. She’s recently opened her own clinic right here in Motueka and invited The Guardian over for a visit.
Background and training
After graduating with a Bachelor of Physiotherapy from the University of Otago in 2011, Jess initially worked in Christchurch prior to returning to her home town in the Tasman region in 2012. She’s worked locally within the Nelson/Tasman region since then and in a variety of areas such as the clinic, aged care, community, gym and vocational settings.
With a background in Sport and Exercise Science prior to her physiotherapy career, Jess also has a Bachelor of Science with a double major in Sport and Exercise Science and Physiology from Massey University. Ongoing training is important to her so that she can offer her clients the best possible solutions, which is led to Jess completing many Physiotherapy post-graduate qualifications, some of which include a Post Graduate Certificate in Rehabilitation from the Auckland University of Technology (AUT), becoming a credentialed McKenzie therapist, certified pilates mat instructor, EPIC lift assessor and GLA:D OA trainer. Furthermore she’s completed courses in manual therapy, exercise rehabilitation, chronic pain and many other areas.
As musculoskeletal physiotherapist Jess specialises in the diagnosis and treatment of conditions that affect the muscles, bones, joints, and soft tissues of the body. Her goal is to help patients recover from injuries or conditions that affect their ability to move and function properly.
Common conditions Jess can assist you with include:

Results focused
There are a number of outcomes you can expect after undergoing treatment with Jess, however, as we are all different, results do depend on each individual. Do expect her to give you some homework to carry out as her goal is to help you manage pain, improve function, and enhance your quality of life.
Improved range of motion and flexibility: Patients with musculoskeletal conditions may experience limited movement or stiffness. Jess can work with you to develop a tailored exercise program to improve your range of motion and flexibility.
Increased strength and endurance: Weakness or muscle imbalances can contribute to musculoskeletal pain and dysfunction. An exercise program that targets specific muscle groups to help build strength and endurance can help.
Better posture and body mechanics: Improving posture and body mechanics can help reduce pain and prevent further injury. A physiotherapist can provide education and exercises to help patients improve their posture and movement patterns.
Improved function and quality of life: By addressing musculoskeletal pain and dysfunction, Jess can help you regain the ability to perform daily activities and improve your overall quality of life.
You can find out more about Jessica Fowler Physiotherapy online at jfphysiotherapy.nz, give her a call on 020 4197 5033 or email jessica@jfphysiotherapy. nz to find out what she can do for you. She has a light, airy and well equipped practice in central Motueka. Bookings are by appointment.

Guide Dog Puppies Need New PurposeBuilt Kennels
Blind Low Vision NZ Guide Dog Puppy Appeal week is taking place across Aotearoa this week. This year Blind Low Vision NZ is focussing on raising funds to support the Guide Dog Kennel Build Appeal.
The current kennels of Blind Low Vision NZ Guide Dogs are now 35 years old, have reached their end of life, and unfortunately, are no longer conducive to the development of the guide dogs in training.
Each year, Blind Low Vision NZ Guide Dogs breed around 100 potential guide dogs, of which around 40 will graduate. However, each year they also have a waiting list of up to 50 New Zealanders waiting for a guide dog to support them to live independent lives. Kiwis who require a guide dog are currently waiting an average of 2 years to be matched.
According to Blind Low Vision NZ CE, John Mulka, the need for guide dogs continues to grow.
“There are currently 180,000 people who are blind, deafblind, or low vision in NZ, but this is expected to increase to 225,000 by 2028.
“Our kennel rebuild is the next step in the shaping of the future success of guide dogs across New Zealand, graduating more successful dogs and ensuring our service is amongst one of the best in the world. Our ambition is to increase the number of dogs who successfully graduate by an additional 20%,” says John.
Laura Kelmere (pictured) was 30 years old with two children when she lost her sight. With two young kids, a partner and even a horse to take care of, life became increasingly painful and dangerous for Laura while she waited for her guide dog.
“When you have kids, you don’t have time to feel sad for yourself. So, I just had
to get on with it. I had to keep getting up to take them to school. I had to keep making them food and getting them to all their games and activities,” says Laura.
Laura needed a guide dog; it was a long wait before Laura and Ryder were finally matched, and Laura’s life changed completely.
Training to become a guide dog is one of the most intensive programmes of all service dogs.
It takes a small army to raise a litter of puppies to be guide dogs, teaching them skills to become a guide dog. It costs around $175,000 to raise, train and keep one guide dog in service and the organisation receives no government funding.
People can help build a new and fitfor-purpose kennel for guide dogs in training. Look out for their Street Collection Volunteers during the Guide Dog Puppy Appeal this Friday, 24 March and Saturday, 25 March or donate online at blindlowvision.org.nz

70-year-old Jowett Car Club cars to visit
Positive Settlement Expo this Sunday
This weekend 28 Jowett cars will roll into Motueka as local Jowett owners and enthusiasts the Pegg family host the annual Jowett Car Club rally, returning to the town for the first time since 1998.
“It’ll be really great to once again meet up with all the fellow enthusiasts coming from both the North and South Island,” says Brian Pegg.
Jowett cars were made in Bradford, England, from 1910 and continued until 1953. The vehicles that will be remembered most in New Zealand are the Javelin Saloon, Jupiter
sports car and the little two-cylinder Bradford trucks and vans, all from the 48-53 era. All models had the trademark horizontally opposed engine.
The Jowett popularity was most prominent in 1951 and cars attending this weekend are from this era, making them around 70-years-old.
“We just love their unique design and the fact they’re the first successful Boxer engine, which they’ve only ever done, in the automotive industry.”
Brian, an owner of a Jowett since 2009 and member of the NZ Club which was established in 1962 for the
past 14 years says the annual rallies are a highlight of the family’s calendar.
“The rallies are the only time we get to meet up with people from afar that we don’t run into very often, and this weekend we’ll have people from Auckland to Canterbury.”
With rally folk rolling into town on Thursday, they’ll hold their AGM that evening, Friday will have them visiting Higgins Park which houses the largest collection of Jowetts in the world; the Ray Win Collection. After lunch rally participants will enjoy a gymkhana event where they
take part in car-based activities.
Saturday provides an opportunity for the public to get up close to these impressive vehicles during the ‘concourse’ event which will see all the cars lined up on Parklands School field and a couple outside Motueka’s Museum from 9-11.30am.
A Sea Shuttle trip into the Abel Tasman National Park takes up most of Sunday before their prize-giving, with the event wrapping up at Toad Hall on Monday morning for breakfast. All of the evening shenanigans are being held in the Lower Moutere Hall.
Are you new to this area from another country? If so then The Positive Settlement Expo is the place for you on Sunday.
Are you new to New Zealand or to Nelson/Tasman area? Do you come from an area or country where things work a little differently? Are you still learning to navigate your way around this region? Then The Positive Settlement Expo is the place for you! This is a new event co-created by the Citizens Advice Bureau Nelson Tasman, Welcoming Communities
Nelson and Tasman, Multicultural Nelson
Tasman, Tasman District Council and Nelson City Council.
Many local and government agencies will be present to introduce how they can help you to settle and find support when and where you need it, guide you on your path to establish your life in our beautiful region and keep us all safe and informed. People will also have the opportunity to meet foreign-speaking locals, cultural groups and communities who will be sharing their culture, language, food and more.
There will be activities for children and free and affordable food and drinks so that you can bring your whole family or group of friends. The Positive Settlement Expo is taking place at Saxton Cricket Pavilion on Sunday, 26 March from 2pm to 5pm, rain or shine. There is plenty of free parking available. Organisers are looking forward to seeing you there and having any newcomers join this Expo.

Bringing Science and Preparedness Info to Motueka
AF8 [Alpine Fault magnitude 8], in collaboration with leading earthquake scientists and Civil Defence Emergency Management (CDEM) Groups, is bringing the award-winning AF8 Roadshow to more than 22 communities in the South Island.
The “AF8 Roadshow: The Science Beneath Our Feet”, sponsored by Toka Tu Ake EQC, will tour the South Island for its third time from March to June 2023, sharing world-leading science with local communities.
The AF8 Roadshow aims to share the Alpine Fault hazard science with communities to improve understanding of the hazard risk and enable conversations on how to be better prepared. This year the tour includes 22 public talks and 11 school sessions, visiting Tuatapere, Winton, Cromwell, Haast, Fox Glacier, Rotoiti St Arnaud, Motueka, Christchurch,
Ashburton, Temuka, Fairlie, Oamaru, Balclutha, Seddon and Linkwater for the first time, and returning to Te Anau, Westport, Greymouth and Hokitika.
“The AF8 Roadshow plays a critical role in raising awareness and increasing our preparedness for the next large Alpine Fault earthquake, and any similar large-scale events. By sharing the science with communities in a context that is relevant to them we can support informed decision-making at a local level. It’s about understanding how our landscape moves, so we can be better prepared to move with it,” says AF8 Programme Manager, Alice Lake-Hammond.
Toka Tu Ake EQC Chief Resilience & Research Officer Dr. Jo Horrocks says that recent weather events have shown how important it is we be prepared for different natural hazards. “Cyclone Gabrielle and other recent storms have
shown how much our lives can be turned upside down by natural hazards. A significant event on the Alpine Fault has the potential to impact the entire South Island and beyond, so it’s so important that we’re well-informed and doing all we can to build our resilience now.”
Associate Prof. Caroline Orchiston, the AF8 Science-lead, stated, “We can’t predict when earthquakes will occur, but scientific research has shown that the Alpine Fault has a history of generating regular, large earthquakes. The next major Alpine Fault event is likely to occur within our lifetime, and we must take steps now to prepare.”
Events are hosted by the six South Island CDEM Groups and supported by world-leading earthquake research and science experts from Resilience to Nature’s Challenges, QuakeCoRE, GNS Science, University
of Otago, University of Canterbury, and the University of Auckland. The AF8 Roadshow is part of an ongoing series of activities designed to support conversations and knowledge sharing around large natural hazard events
like an Alpine Fault earthquake, ensuring that communities and agencies are collectively better prepared.
AF8 [Alpine Fault magnitude 8] is a collaboration between the six South Island’s CDEM Groups, their partner agencies,
stakeholders, and scientists. It commenced in July 2016 and is led by Emergency Management Southland on behalf of the South Island CDEM groups. AF8 aims to share the Alpine Fault hazard and impact science
and preparedness information widely, through communication and engagement activities, to increase awareness, enable conversation and build societal preparedness to natural hazard events in the South Island.

The SPC Car Boot sale returns!
Residents of the cyclone ravaged North Island’s east coast are set to benefit from the local community’s generosity with the Motueka Community Store raising $1,200 toward the Flood Relief Fund.
The Store has also contributed a huge amount of goods from the shop that they deemed would be of use including 40 boxes

On Saturday, 11 March the Hills Community Church in Mapua held a Street Market to also raise funds for Flood Relief.
“There was a wonderful atmosphere for a worthy cause and
our community certainly got behind and supported the event with thanks to the Mapua Community Hall, Talley’s, Mitre 10 and Mapua Kids ‘n’ Koffee,” say organisers.
Nearly $5000 was raised and organisers are looking forward to donating that money to a community north of Gisborne that was devastated by the flooding.

Solutions focused community support
Founded in 1952, the Rural Service Centre was set up by Golden Bay farming families, spearheaded by local identity Ben Hurst. In the early fifties a vet would fly up from Christchurch to service local farms. As the area developed their farming sector, so did their need for a permanent veterinarian.

Around 130 members pay a small annual membership fee, which gives them a number of benefits and discounts. Members also have voting rights when it comes to selecting board members. The Rural Service Centre is led by General Manager Jeff Riodan who oversees the operation. It’s a professional governance structure and one does not have to be a member to purchase products or use services.
With its roots firmly grounded in the community the Rural Service Centre has made a visible difference on many levels and continue to do so.Annually the Rural Service Centre contributes around $20K back in to their local community, whilst continuing to upgrade and improve their own services.
Your local veterinarian
On the day of our visit, the Vet Clinic is involved in an important community service and it was absolutely heartwarming to witness. Those involved weren’t making a big deal about it, after all it’s what they do here, help the community.
Snuggled under fluffy blankets are rescue cats from the Golden Bay Animal Welfare Society. Vets and nurses carry out their work de-sexing, worming and vaccinating these gorgeous bundles of fur before the once abandoned moggies are ready to find new homes. Its solutions like this which make a real difference.
We were privileged to have a behind the scenes tour and witness the love and attention the dedicated vet-
erinarian team gives their patients. In fact a colleague revealed that she went to see them to euthanise her elderly frail family cat. Naturally such experiences can be very difficult for the owner, but she couldn’t praise them enough for their support, care and understanding of such a delicate process.
It’s reassuring to know their team genuinely care, right down to the colour of a patients dressing. Yes, we saw a chocolate Labrador with the biggest smile on its face sporting a magnificent bright pink bandage on its front leg.

The well stocked retail area of the vet clinic where you can pick up all manner of animal care products
canine is in no hurry to leave and we muse that its experience must have been just as impressive as its colourful dressing.
The Vet Clinic was established with a primary focus on large animals and you’ll often see their team on the farm taking care of their needs. There’s also a 24hr call out service for local farmers. Led by Vet Clinic Manager Vanessa Harwood they are a tightknit group of 12 animal lovers made up of five veterinarians, alongside nurses and frontline staff. The centre is very modern and well equipped with its own x-ray room and animal dental facilities.
If you live in Golden Bay and own an animal, do pop in for a visit. They have a large retail area where you can pick up all manner of animal care products and they have some incredible competitions too.
The Country Store
Unlike many retail operations and commercial clinics the Rural Service Centre is a not for profit entity. This means it does not distribute profits to a set of directors or stockholders. Instead any generated surplus is reinvested back into both the centre and the community, whether it’s a new clinic, reduced fees, discounted treatments, or simply running morale-boosting social events during tough times, the Rural Service Centre can do things here that aren’t always commercially viable elsewhere.
“We believe in partnership that supports family, farm and the community,” is their underlying ethos. CONGRATULATIONS

rst skidder. It was a CAT518, and the rst step into mechanisation when a grapple was tted to it the following year. With a strong focus on health and safety in the industry, Mike took full ownership of the company in 1990 with the vision to create a fully-mechanised operation. Finally taking the leap, and not without some trepidation, Fraser Logging purchased a Hahn Harvester in 1994 to mechanically process logs and, subsequently, a CAT325 with a waratah processing head in 1998. A successfully won contract for Weyerhaeuser New Zealand in 1999 saw a growth period for the business and the beginning of the 740 crew. Mike continued investment to training his sta , and his contribution and input to forestry in the region
Renowned and well-respected for their dedication to providing a better workplace environment, MJ Fraser Logging are celebrating 50 years in the industry. Owned by fourthgeneration logger Mike Fraser, whose name is synonymous with providing change and growth within the logging sector, we take a look at where it all began, and MJ Fraser Logging’s journey to becoming one of the region's most successful and in uential operators in the region.
Robin Fraser, Mike’s great grandfather was the rst in a long line of Frasers whose lives have been intrinsically linked to New Zealand forests. He was born in the late 1800’s and worked in forestry at Nydia Bay in the Marlborough Sounds.
Roy Fraser, Mike’s grandfather was born in 1902 and followed in Robin’s footsteps, operating
a hauler for Oddland’s in the North Island’s Wairarapa. Don Fraser, Mike’s father was born in 1930 and continued on the family tradition working in forestry and lived in a hut in the bush with his brother Bill, cutting posts and rewood in 1948. e two brothers worked in a forestry crew in 1950, and then made the move to the South Island to work on Rabbit Island in the early 50’s using cross-cut saws and axes to trim trees.
In the late 50’s Don went to work for the Hunt Brothers. On the hauler side they used a horse to pull the main rope out. Don competed in a range of industry competitions, winning various New Zealand chopping records, and the New Zealand Jigger Board Championship in the late 60’s which resulted in an invitation to chop for HRH
Queen Elizabeth II at Trafalgar
Park during a Royal Tour.
In 1972 Don and his wife Doreen purchased the logging business from Bob Hunt and this was the beginning of the Fraser 03 crew and Fraser Logging family business. Back then the crew, consisting of one loader, a bulldozer and ve men, produced approximately four to ve truckloads per day. Mike joined his father in the operation in 1980. An experienced mechanic, Mike was surprised at the lack of quali cations and training systems required to work in the industry and used this as a driving motivation for change and growth into leading the business.
Working side by side with his father for many years, Fraser Logging purchased their rst new machine in 1981 – a CATD6D dozer - and by the mid 80’s they had purchased their

has seen him and his team receive numerous awards for their excellence within the industry. Since its inception, the strength of the business has been within its people, and their wellbeing continues to be one of the driving forces behind its success.
In 2022 Fraser Logging gained the OneFortyOne tender to carry out harvesting and road engineering on approximately 2000 hectares of forest in the Manuka Island forest estate in the top of the Wairau Valley. It was a four hundred thousand tonne contract and the rst time Fraser Logging had entered into a deal including roading. e company now employs 37 people, including management, collaboratively totes up 351 years of service, and their four fully mechanised crews produce approximately 340 thousand tonnes per year working in the OneFortyOne forests. Hugely valuable to the forestry industry, Mike Fraser is considered a real leader and a true professional

amongst his peers. He draws on an extensive rugby background, having played NPC for Nelson Bays and coached at Mako level, bringing through many of those sporting practices into his business, saying “Rugby is doing some really cool stu and I have tried to utilise what happens there. We can teach people how to use a chainsaw, how to operate a machine, and other skills that are needed, but we need to give them the tools to grow and see them be who they really are.”
Decades before mental health was widely discussed, Mike knew that ensuring his workers had solid support around them would lead to success and enlisted the help of a psychologist to support his crew.
Jim Forsyth has been providing psychological and counselling support to Fraser logging for many years and says that Mike is clearly motivated not only to run a great operation but is also acutely conscious that an organisation is only as good as its people.
“I have always admired Mike’s proactive and caring approach to the welfare of his sta . I have invariably found him approachable, generous with his time and resources, and keen to make a positive contribution to people’s lives.”

We hope you enjoy your 2023 Muddy Buddy experience
Muddy Buddy is full of fun. Photos of previous episodes tell the story best! Almost a rite of passage for locals, the event is a great opportunity to bring a group of people together – family members, sports teams and clubs, co-workers, or special-interest groups – to let loose and play.
Also on offer is a variety of refreshments, including delicious hot food, coffee and ice cream, to satisfy hungry tummies. Attendees can have a go at the silent auction, meander through the white elephant stall and, for the little ones of course, bounce their hearts out on the bouncy castle!
Spot prizes for fun run participants this year include two brand new bikes, kindly donated by MyRide Richmond. Creativity, too, can be well rewarded. Key to the fun is the fancy dress element, with prizes for the best looks. Teams are encouraged to decorate themselves in ECOfriendly costumes that can be composted, recycled or reused. Shoes – essentially an old pair - are compulsory.

The sailing began in a blustery South Westerly gusting to over 20 knots, and life was pretty exciting for the 17 yachts that launched for the regatta. Before the start one of the Sea Scout cutters had capsized and their selfrescue was one of the day’s many highlights. As we were not sailing on a King Tide the new course focused more on the deeper water off Grossi Point, and this meant a reaching start. Peter Murton hit the start line on the gun in his Yawl rigged Wellsford Navigator and led the Open Class mixed fleet on an exciting fetch to the first mark which was a gybe into the incoming current. The next leg spread the fleet and Lloyd Knowles took command in his Laser to record the first of his two fastest times. Jan Mitchell sailed well to finish in third place in her Laser with the 4.7 sqm sail. The cruising division saw a battle between the Idle Along ‘Idol’, the Sea Scout Cutter ‘Pamir’, and David Strong sailing ‘Minisail’. The Catamarans were cleaned out by Graham and Anna Battersby in their Hobie 16. First race for Anna who has been in the shore team for previous regattas. Second was Chris Cowell, also racing for the first time in his Hobie Wave, and third was Brett Glass sailing his Kayak with outriggers. Brett has kept the original mainsail but added a Noelex 22 Jib and the boat is flying.
Towards the end of the first race the wind died, and then quickly filled in from the North East, enabling the fleet to finish to windward.
Race two was sailing in a 10knot northeasterly with frequent gusts to keep everyone alert. A downwind start meant another pile-up at the first mark, but most rounded with no problem.
Lloyd Knowles hit the front early and after a close tussle right around the course finished just ahead of
John and Alex in the 420. However Glenn Stevens with crew Anne in the Phase 2 ‘Art Deco’ were pretty close, and finishing third won them the race on handicap.
Peter Walker and his crew sailed well to record fastest time again in the Cruiser division, but the Cutter ‘Tamaha’ having recovered from their capsize earlier in the day finished close to take the win on handicap, with ‘Pamir’ third.
The Cats were a bit more even without the Hobie 16 in Race 2 and Brett Glass had a good win in his Trimaran from Chris Cowell in the Hobie Wave.
Several Classic Clinker boats entered. Denis Moriarty brought ‘Susan’, a Whitehall style pulling boat rigged with a sprit main and a jib. Her low freeboard and lack of headroom under the boom made sailing her in the prevailing conditions a bit dicey and she returned to shore fairly quickly. The other was David Gregan’s 4m Clinker gunter rigged sloop named ‘Lively’. Beautifully finished, she did not stay out long after the competition retired.
Uncommon boats included Julian Crane sailing his mini trailer Yacht, the Welsford designed Scamp class ‘Swallow’, and David Strong’s 60 year old Minisail, a forerunner of the Laser.
Competitors ranged in age from 8-year-old Ruby, up to a few experienced Grandparents, husband and wife combinations, and parents sailing with their kids.
Tamaha Sea Scouts were major participants with 2 Cutters, a Sunburst, and the Rescue boat. Their crews were a mixture of Sea Scouts and parents making it a real family day. A new feature was the opportunity to go for a sail, and Averil took four different spectators for a ride in her 14 foot Cat.
