Makos to play final in Nelson

The Tasman Makos could become our first rugby team since Nelson Bays in 2004 to win a national rugby championship. They are just one game away from clinching the ITM Cup Championship and need to beat old foe Hawke’s Bay at fortress Trafalgar Park on Friday for the second time this season in order to lift the trophy and shoot into the Premiership for 2014. Since its amalgamation in 2005, the Tasman Makos have never reached an ITM Cup final, and up until last weekend hadn’t even hosted a semi-final. Blenheim’s support was mediocre on Saturday as the Makos beat Southland 49-28 to book a place in the Championship final, so lets get behind our team and sell out Trafalgar Park for the first time since the 2011 Rugby World Cup. Kick off is at 7.35pm this Friday night.
Car seat law to save kids’ lives Nelson school principals and some parents say changes to the age that children must be in a car seat will be a pain in the bum, but NZTA insists there is only one purpose behind the move – to save lives. Changes to the law come into effect next Friday, November 1, which will make it mandatory for children to ride in an approved child restraint until the age of seven. Currently the law is for children until
the age of five. Local groups like Plunket and the Nelson Parents Centre say they support the move but the new law could be a problem for local schools if they take children on school outings. Two local principals spoken to by Nelson Weekly say it will be frustrating but they understand the safety reasons behind it. “Obviously it is a great idea if it’s a move

left at school and then used for the trip, it could become hard. It may just mean that we need to buy half a dozen boosters and have them sat in the cupboard somewhere.” Don McLean, principal of Hampden St School, says he’s put it to parents to be aware to bring their five to seven year olds

to school in a child restraint. “We flagged it to parents that it’s going to bring some issues around transport for trips. It is about safety and it would be remiss of us to go and say, ‘we aren’t going to do trips now’. Preschools and kindergartens have been doing it for years. “We’ve really tried to take it in a more positive front and say ‘well this is about safety, so we’re going to do what we can’,” he says. In the ten years from 2002 to 2011, crashes on New Zealand roads claimed the lives of 24 child passengers aged 5 to 7, with another 115 suffering serious injuries. NZTA road safety director Ernst Zöllner says the new rules will help to keep more children safe on New Zealand roads. “The new rules for child restraint use are being introduced for one purpose – to stop children from being killed or seriously injured when travelling in vehicles. The death
or serious injury of any child is a tragedy, and even more so when it can be prevented with the use of simple and widely available equipment like child restraints.” Nelson Bays area commander, Inspector Steve Greally, says they will work with other agencies and schools to educate parents before ticketing them. “You’re likely to see us around schools at drop off and pick up times and we’ll be stopping cars and checking that children are appropriately restrained. We will also be making sure parents understand their responsibilities under the new law.” While the new law may create some headaches for schools and parents that may have already got rid of child restraints, support groups have applauded the move. Bev Hamilton, a committee member of the Nelson Parent Centre, says that overall she is pleased with the increase in age but believes it should be based on height to allow
for seven year olds that will be shorter than a 148cm height recommendation for using child restraints. “You’re going to have a lot of kids that don’t reach that 148cm. But it’s all positive because it is all in the aim of saving children’s lives in the unfortunate event of an accident. It’s definitely necessary.” Kylie Matthewson, car seat service manager for Plunket Nelson, says the organisation has always advocated to parents that abiding by the 148cm height restriction is the best bet, but says the law change is a step in the right direction. She says with rental, sale and help from other agencies such as WINZ, parents shouldn’t struggle with the change either. “I think schools will find it the most difficult, but it is a matter of education. Once parents and children are abiding by the law it will become second nature children take their restraints to school.”

Parts have arrived in Nelson for an $80 million ship repair job that will see around 200 workers fly into the city. The 250 metre long oil storage ship Raroa will be repaired in Nelson this month and it will be the biggest ship to ever come to Nelson. Port Nelson won the contract to fix the ship last month and on Friday a ship carrying parts for the Raroa sailed into town, in preparation for the repair. Port Nelson chief executive Martin Byrne says the Raroa should arrive in Nelson within the next few weeks and the job is a huge boost for the port and the wider community. “We’re very pleased and it is certainly significant for us.” The ship is owned by OMV New Zealand and operates at the Maari off shore oil field, off the Taranaki coast. Nelson beat Port Taranaki for the rights to berth the ship while it is repaired. Martin says around 200 workers from around New Zealand will fly to Nelson for the repair, which is expected to take

issues with it.” Locals will only be able to get a good view of the ship as it enters and leaves the port through the Cut, or from the Port Hills, while it is in port. “It will certainly be an impressive sight,” says Martin. In announcing the repair work, OMV said there would be a refurbishment and upgrade of processing equipment and the installation of a new swivel, which allows the vessel to rotate around its mooring. Once the work is complete the Raroa will return to its permanent location in the Maari oil field, New Zealand’s largest off shore oil field.

Nelson’s streets were packed with smiles, colour, music and plenty of people on Friday night to celebrate the annual Masked Parade and Carnivale. More than 3000 Nelsonians from 50 groups paraded through the inner city streets and crowds of thousands watching from the footpaths. The party continued after the Masked Parade with the carnivale which saw crowds listen to a free concert at the top of Trafalgar St and enjoy food stalls and other attractions around the city. Organisers say they were thrilled with the high level of spectator interaction and the huge effort many participants had put in to design elaborate and colourful costumes in the Adventurous Journeys theme of the parade. Samba de Sol won the Kim Merry Supreme Group Award for their outstanding entry. Nelson mayor-elect Rachel Reese says the parade and carnivale was another success this year. “It’s the one night of the year that’s highly anticipated and where Nelson comes together and comes alive. I was so impressed by the masks and costumes this year – such fantastic efforts by all of those who took part,” she says. Sergeant Shane Miles of Nelson Bays Police says the Masked Parade was once again a great community event with

Four arrests were made during the event, three for breaching the liquor ban and one for possession of a knife. “Hundreds of cars were stopped at road policing check points and only one driver was found to be over the limit,” says Shane. Police did respond to a number of minor
disorder complaints shortly after the carnivale ended around the CBD and are investigating one assault complaint.” Other winners of the parade were Karl Wulff for the best individual, Leshan Dance Troupe for second best group, Hampden St School for best school and Appleby School for second best school. Our growth is fastest, says Census Your Community Newspaper
Its official, Nelson is the fastest growing region in the South Island and its Tasman neighbours are a close second. Nelson had 46,437 people at the 2013 Census, an 8.3 per cent increase from 2006, faster than any other region outside of Auckland. The figures were released last week by Statistics New Zealand and showed the national average increase was 5.3 per cent. It showed many Nelson areas had population increases, with Ngawhatu adding more than 1000 people over the seven years, mainly due to increasing sub-divisions in the area. Nelson is now the country’s 13th largest region, one place behind Tasman, which enjoyed a six per cent increase to its population, to 47,157. “The Nelson region’s growth rate between 2006 and 2013 was nearly three times its rate in the five years before that. Its population also makes it the 13th-biggest in the country,” Government Statistician Liz MacPherson says. The effects of that growth is evident and bodes well for improving our infrastructure and public services says local MP Nick Smith. “We all know that Nelson is a great place to live and these figures confirm that people continue to be attracted here in droves,” he says. “This Census data is good news for our region because it puts us on firm footing to get our fair share of the limited government funding that is available for services like health, education and roading.”

Mayor-elect Rachel Reese says the data backs up what many Nelsonians have thought for years. “The numbers fit with my observations locally. We are a growing region and we need to plan well for that growth.” Reaction to the figures has been varied but Nelson’s strong growth has caused some cause for concern from other regions. Hastings mayor Lawrence Yule was quoted as saying he was worried that Nelson had such strong growth because it was in competition with Hawke’s Bay to attract similar people. Rachel says Nelson is already a popular place to retire but the key to the region prospering is to bring “high value” jobs to the region. “Our local industries are well positioned to lead New Zealand’s economic growth post global financial crisis. Job growth in high value industries like aquaculture, construction innovation, and the creative IT sector are all positive for Nelson. We need people in their 30s and 40s settling here to buy the businesses of our 60 and 70 year olds as they retire.”
Ducks invade Nelson’s streets A pair of ducks have been frequenting the top of Trafalgar St in what has become a bit of a tradition says Nelson woman Tracey Alexander. For the past three years, as soon as the first signs of spring appear, “Donald” and “Daisy” have visited her daily and this
year has proven no different says Tracey. “There’s nothing more special than some quality duck time. Last year they brought their ducklings down too, which caused a bit of havoc with traffic on the road. I had to bundle them into a basket and walk
them all back up to the river.” She says after stopping by the cart for a visit, they often make their way down Trafalgar St in search of more socialising. “Daisy is full of eggs at the moment now though. She’s got a bit more of a waddle on than usual.”

Mall cook book now out Buxton toilets close
Richmond Mall has searched the region for Nelsonian’s favourite recipes and now it’s ready to deliver them to you. The Mall set out to create a cook book filled with favourite recipes from around the region to help celebrate its 40th birthday this month. The call for recipes netted hundreds of great ideas says Mall manager Belinda de Clerq. “I was so surprised by the response we got. It was really great and I’ve had people come up to me and ask when it’s coming out. People have been following it along so it’s great that it’s now out and people can start using it.” A competition to find the best overall recipe was awarded to Stoke lady Elaine Flannery with her Christmas Plum Duff. Celebrating a birthday
Make-over time for the Buxton Toilet block is approaching fast and the block will soon close as the first step on the journey of getting a new look. The public toilets will close from this Saturday October 26 through until late November. The closure is so community volunteers can start on the refurbishment project over the labour weekend. A community planning day in August attracted around 40 people who have helped come up with a plan taking into account Crime Prevention through Design which has been identified as an issue in that area, meeting building regulations and budget. The plan has also considered the location of the toilets, being so central to the CBD and having full sun in the winter time.
Councillor Kate Fulton put her hand up to be involved in working with the community on this project and says having had young children she is acutely aware of how important public toilet facilities are to parents with small children. “The ideal location of the Buxton toilets to the CBD gave us an opportunity to create a space which is pleasant and child friendly. We then received a request from a young boy for ‘more lego please’. We looked at the existing architecture and realised it was very much like a lego-block structure. From there our theme around contemplation and imagination grew.” Any volunteers who would like to help with the makeover can also register their names with NCC. Alternative public toilet facilities are available at Montgomery Square and 1903 Square.

All Blacks coming to Nelson
The All Blacks are coming to Nelson this Friday. As part of their annual All Blacks to the Nation visits to different parts of New Zealand, the All Blacks are visiting Nelson in a flying visit to say thanks to fans for all their support this year ahead of the northern hemisphere tour. The All Blacks squad for the Air New Zealand European Tour was announced on Sunday. The other provinces lucky enough
to get a visit are: Pukekohe, Tauranga, Matamata, Palmerston North, Timaru and Queenstown. The provincial visits have been a popular day with fans and the players since the first flying visits in 2011 before the Rugby World Cup. All Blacks captain Richie McCaw says the players enjoyed the opportunity to visit cities and towns that don’t normally get to see the All Blacks up close. The flying
visits were a way to acknowledge support from fans, young and old from all over New Zealand. “We know that we have huge support from all parts of the country and our fans are a big part of what makes this team special. The visits have become popular with the guys as it really is a day for us to thank our supporters,” he said. Acting CEO for the Tasman Rugby Union, Les Edwards, says they had been working
hard on making the All Blacks visit to town a memorable one for fans and the players. “We only have the boys on the ground for a few hours, but we’re determined to get them meeting as many people as possible” While in town the players will meet children at Broadgreen Intermediate, make a public lunch time appearance at Richmond Mall, visit Nelson Hospital and serve customers before flying out of Nelson Airport.
Ducks race along Maitai River for St John Nelson Hundreds of rubber ducks racing down the Maitai River on Sunday caused a bit of a stir, with huge crowds turning out to watch the Classic Duck Race. More than 500 individually sponsored ducks were released into the river for the event, raising more than $5000 all in aid of St John Nelson. The ducks raced from the Bridge St Bridge to the Collingwood St Bridge, with the first duck back taking home $1000 for its sponsor. Sarah McCabe, area executive officer for St John, says the event was a huge success and she couldn’t have asked for more looking back on the day. “We were really stoked with the

number of people who came along. We had a really good response, people really enjoyed it.” She says the crowds who attended made the most of the great weather. Becky Flood who attended the event with her daughter says she was happy to sponsor a duck for such a good cause. “It’s a lovely day too and it is nice to be doing something different.” The funds raised will go straight back to St John Nelson, who don’t recieve full funding from the government. They currently have 21 paid and 50 volunteer staff who work from the Nelson and Richmond stations and in the past year responded to 6770 emergency calls.

Local kids get stuck in at Science fest NMIT hosts 'open day' From smoke cannons, slime making, rocket launching, to bubble blowing, kids of all ages got stuck into the Cawthron Science Festival over the weekend. Hundreds of kids made the most of the interactive event, aimed at dissecting the science used in most people's daily lives and showcasing them in a fun and hands on way for children. Co-organiser Gareth Cashin says he was very pleased with the turn out for the event which was open to the public on Saturday and Sunday. A further 200 local school children visited on Friday too. "The event is really designed to give people access to science based activities, for them to realise how science effects our daily lives."

It’s being dubbed as Nelson’s biggest ever “open home” and NMIT says it’s open to everyone. Nelson Marlborough Institute of Technology (NMIT) will be throwing open its doors on Thursday, 24 October 2013, 11am – 2pm for the region’s biggest ever ‘open home’. NMIT chief executive Tony Gray says the concept of an open home is a realistic one. “Each year at around this time, we host an open day which is aimed at people who are thinking about studying. This year, we wanted to do something different and encourage anybody from the community to come and have a look around at the great resources and facilities we have at NMIT. Even if you’re not thinking of actually studying yourself, chances are you may well know someone who is – and we want you to be able to tell that person about the amazing environment they will benefit from if they come to NMIT.” Many people will be receiving personal invites to attend the open day and NMIT’s senior staff will be hosting guided campus tours. People working in Nelson’s central city business district will also be encouraged to pop in during their lunch-break. “Unless you’ve visited the campus in the past two years, your ideas about the place are probably outdated - the pre-fabs of old are gone.” says Tony Gray. As well as careers and training advice, the open day will feature live entertainment and a free BBQ.

Prime disappears off TV screens The disappearing act of a popular TV channel has had viewers up in arms and local technicians scrambling to help restore it. Freeview satellite users lost all access to Prime TV at the start of the month when the company changed the way it transmits the channel, switching one satellite for another while leaving viewers cut off in the process. Local Freeview installer Don Clementson of FAV SAT says he has been inundated with calls regarding the loss
of Prime and says Freeview has made a mistake in not letting their customers know about the changes in advance. “I knew it was happening three weeks prior to that but I assumed they’d put a message on the screen saying it was going off and they would explain it but they didn’t, they just turned it off. All of a sudden the phone was just going and going.” People who tune into Freeview via aerial have been unaffected, while users of unaccredited revievers and even some
approved Freeview receivers have been shut out. Don says he’s been manually tuning receivers in for customers who were unable to do so themselves and with up to 70 phone calls a day, wishes things had been communicated better. “It’s one big stuff up by Freeview basically, they should have let people know prior.” With the rugby scheduled to air over the weekend, Freeview were forced to backtrack on the switch over, reinstating the old signal until the end of the month to
allow customers to get their heads around the change. Darren Richards of Nelson TV & Video Services says his phone has been going red hot too since the cut off and he’s even had a special message put on his phone to accommodate for the number of calls coming through. “It most certainly is frustrating and it could have been handled better. I think it’s just the not knowing that has really brassed a lot of people off.”
Bootcamp raises money for breast cancer trust More than 125 ladies were tickled pink on Saturday, as they took part in the annual Bootcamp for Breast Cancer event held at the Nelson College for Girls school gym. The fundraiser, held by the Nelson Regional Breast Cancer Trust, attracts a high turnout each year says trustee Kate Coote and this year proved no exception, with $13,700 raised for the trust through individual and corporate sponsorship. “Every year that we do it more and more people dress up in pink and that is one of the highlights, seeing everyone get into the spirit of it”. She says she’s had nothing but
positive feedback from attendees. The bootcamp wasn’t the only fundraiser for the trust this week, the Pink Ring, a hand crafted ring by Benjamin Black Goldsmiths, sold via a Trademe auction for $680. Local jeweller Benjamin Clark donated the ring to the trust for Breast Cancer Awareness Month. The winner of the auction, Nelson woman Emma-Jane Weeks, says she bought it for her aunty who is currently undergoing breast cancer treatment. Proceeds from the bootcamp and auction will go directly back into the Nelson Regional Breast Cancer Trust.

Beerfest back
Police report with Area Commander
Steve Greally
From 1 November the NZ Transport agency’s new rules around the use of child restraints in cars comes into effect. The rule changes mean that children will be required to be in an approved child seat or booster seat until their seventh birthday. Seat belts in cars are designed to most effectively protect an average sized adult in a crash. Children, because they are smaller and have a different body shape to adults, need additional seating equipment to keep them as safe as adults in a car. Parents need to make sure they can comply with the new law when it comes into effect next week and have the appropriate seating available for their children. For some people this is going to involve some initial expense. The thing to remember is that these changes have been introduced to reduce preventable deaths and injuries to children travelling in vehicles. In the 10 years from 2003 to 2011, 24 child passengers aged 5 to 7 were killed in crashes and another 115 suffered serious injuries. If using a child seat would have saved any one of those children then I say it’s worth it. Dealing with the death of a child is one of the hardest jobs my officers attend so we are fully supportive of any measures being taken to save those young lives. From 1 November Police will be required to enforce the new law. Initially we will be working with other agencies and schools to educate parents. You’re likely to see us around schools at drop off and pick up times and we’ll be stopping cars and checking that children are appropriately restrained. We will also be making sure parents understand their responsibilities under the new law. Our initial response will be education focussed, however this will be followed by an enforcement phase where officers may issue infringement notices to drivers carrying children who are not restrained properly. My hope is that everyone who is carrying children in a vehicle takes this law change on board quickly. After all it’s simply about saving children’s lives.

Locals were able to get a taste of Nelson’s very own “Beerfest” last week when the owners of German restaurant Krauts brought back their version of Oktoberfest. Oktoberfest is the world’s largest fair held in Munich, Germany and attracts more than 6 million people each year, so instead of missing out on their
country’s traditional celebrations Raz and Jasmin Zulifaqar played host to their own, complete with stein holding competitions, dressing up and traditional German food. This the first ‘Beerfest’ they have held since moving their premises to Buxton Sq. They have plans for bigger and better next year.

Community spirit building in the valley There is a new sense of community stirring in the heart of one of Nelson’s older suburbs, Washington Valley. When moving to the area a few months ago, Valley resident Rachael Purdie was most surprised to discover that there was no established community group so she took the initiative and set out to organise one. A preliminary call to action from her Facebook account has resulted in the recent formation of the Washington Valley Community Group, a small group of enthusiastic locals intent on encouraging a community spirit among individuals, families, businesses and organisations in the Washington Valley area. “We want to help people get to know their neighbours,” says Rachael. “It's about people feeling part of their community, whether they've lived in the valley for thirty years or thirty days, whether they own or rent, whether they live on their own, with family or with a bunch of mates. It's about people connecting, breaking down some of those barriers that can sometimes be created when we don't really know each other." "The more we can encourage locals to get involved with each other, the better the sense of community. I think there are lots of residents in the Valley who feel like we

The group wants to support local families, promote businesses based in the area, encourage the sharing of ideas and foster goodwill between the various cultures that are represented in the valley. The Washington Valley Community Group is hosting its first event on Sunday
3 November – “Picnic at Pioneers”. All Washington Valley residents are invited to join the fun at Pioneers Park from 2pm. The event is being kept simple with participants encouraged to bring a rug, a plate of food to share and a percussion instrument if they have one, plus there will be sports equipment available.

Heading off road, on a scooter! The idea of driving down the road on a scooter didn’t hold much appeal for Tahunanui man Craig Morris – let alone driving one across some of the worst off-road tracks in the country. Craig says after years of riding “big bikes” he had to be talked into the Survivor Scooter Challenge by his wife Jenny but admits they haven’t looked back since. “I was a bit reluctant, but I thought ok so we started looking around for some scooters and when we got them we started playing around with them, it was like being young again. We thought ‘oh, this is a bit of fun’.” The pair are now fully committed to the latest Survivor Scooter Challenge which will see a group of mainly Nelson scooter drivers ride along the West Coast over four days in January. Organiser Jason Monopoli says there’ll be plenty of challenges for the group, including river crossings and plenty of hills. But he says it has always been a blast and the focus is on completing it as a team, not speed. “This is no fully-catered, holdyour-hand, quiet weekend. Budget accommodation will be supplied and there will be support vehicles – but this trip should be seen as a group of likeminded people bonding on a unique adventure,” he says. Craig says now they’re signed up he’s really looking forward to the event, which also aims to raise $5000-$6000 for a yet-to-be-named charity.

NEW FASHION STORE: Adding to the recent growth that has seen Nelson labelled the fastest growing region outside of Auckland, the CBD can add a new retailer into the mix. Cheryl Mackie opened her brand new fashion boutique at the top end of Rutherford St just a week ago, a lifelong dream that the 28 year old fashion designer is living out. Cheryl, a Massey University graduate, designs and manufactures each garment herself and describes her signature style as "classic, tailored garments that are suitable for a range of age groups". As well as an instore collection, Cheryl can tailor designs to suit. Photo: Sinead Ogilvie.

The Harbour Master’s

• Four container vessels, a tanker, a cement ship, three rig tender supply vessels, a fertiliser bulk carrier, nine fishing vessel movements and the Sea Watch to the slipway kept the port pilots and stevedores busy during the last week. • Speaking of busy, the Harbour Master staff report that the waterways are getting busier with shipping, sailing, fishing (recreational) craft, swimmers, skiers and kite boarders. • Do you know there are preferred zones for most activities and they are there for your safety? Please endeavour to stay out of the appropriate zone if the proper activity is taking place there. • The zones are clearly marked within the bylaw as are exclusion zones within the port. Not many are aware that there is a 50m exclusion zone around all of Port Nelson wharves and there are reasonable fine provisions for going inside that 50m. The channel is 240m wide so there is no real necessity to be so close to a ship or wharf that in the unlikely event that something fell off it could hit you. • The winds continue to build so please ensure you have checked the weather forecast before setting off and always wear your lifejacket.

Food classes all the rage before Christmas Three separate adult learning classes at Nayland College this month are each hoping to make Christmas even better for Nelsonians. Each school term various adult learning classes are held at Nayland College and three this term are aiming to make a special difference. The classes are all “bite sized”, meaning some are only two nights long. One is a cooking class hosted by chef Luke Macann which will involve cooking a beautiful Christmas dinner, along with other seasonal recipes and ideas. The second is a budgeting class, run by Lisa Dyer of Nelson Budget Services, which aims to give people ideas for great Christmas gifts that don’t cost the earth. The third is hosted by dietitian Julia Garde who, over a two night course, will help people read nutrition labels and understand what is in our food. Kathryn Slater, of Nayland College, says the three courses all overlap and highlight the great range of courses available and how they can have an

Luke says his course is about inspiring people in the kitchen and passing on a few new ideas and tips. “The most important ingredient in a kitchen is knowledge. I always like to start with basic seasonal vegetables and foods and process them essentially into great food.” Lisa’s “give yourself a pay rise” course is about freeing up some cash over Christmas. “Every new year we have a strong influx of people that
overspend over Christmas and it puts pressure on for a long time so this is about having an awesome Christmas and spoiling your children, without spoiling the rest of the year.” Julia’s food labelling course will be held over two nights and includes a visit to a local supermarket. Nelson businessman raises $360,000 on Kickstarter
A Nelson entrepreneur has been left stunned after raising more than $400,000 in a crowdfunding campaign for a start-up travel gear company. Jimmy Hayes, of Nelson, and friend Doug Barber launched a campaign on US site Kickstarter last month, with the aim of raising $30,000 from the global travel community. Their first product – a stylish carry-on bag – has attracted the support of more than 1500 people from all over the world. A total of $US341,393 ($NZD401,648.86) has been raised, with the campaign closing over the weekend.
Speaking from Thailand last week, Nelsonborn Jimmy told says the two friends were feeling "pretty damn stoked". "We weren't joking around when we set the target of $30,000 and we thought that was realistic. It's really taken off for us." Most backers have pledged $229 or more which effectively means they have prepurchased one of the bags. Jimmy says although the friends did not expect to raise so much, they were prepared for success and had systems in place to cope with increased demand. Doug and Jimmy founded their company Minaal after spending 52 days travelling

Grandma wins year's supply of eggs
Lynn and Daniel Hall both claimed prizes at Ewing Poultry’s international egg day celebrations last week. Photo: Phillip Rollo.
Lynn Hall, an Upper Moutere grandma, has won a year’s supply of eggs from Ewing Poulty after being randomly selected during their international egg day celebrations last week. And to help her eat them is grandson Daniel Hall, 11, who took home a cookbook after winning an omelet making competition. Lynn says the pair attended the event as it was in the school holidays and had never been before. “We went at 8am and we were very impressed,” she says. Daniel quickly chimed in to say the food was why the event was impressive. “There were poached eggs, scrambled eggs, and it was all free,” he says. Ewing Poultry takes part in inter-

After designing their product in New Zealand, the pair moved to San Francisco earlier this year to prepare for the Kickstarter launch. They are both now "living out of backpacks" in Vietnam to oversee the manufacturing process. Their carry-on bag opens flat like a suitcase and features straps which can be zipped away, a compartment for electronic devices, a phone pocket, passport pocket, pen holders, and a key clip. national egg day by giving out a free breakfast to its customers who can then take part in a series of challenges to win prizes. Around 350 people turned up to claim the free breakfast, with 35kg of bacon, 20kg of breakfast sausages, 300 hash browns and hundreds of eggs devoured over the morning. Company director Paul Ewing says the idea to take part was a way of giving back to the community. “We had around 350 people through. It’s a commercial thing obviously because we’re trying to promote eggs, but it’s an international thing and it’s a nice way of giving back,” he says. “It’s good getting to talk to customers and it was pretty cool.”

First step complete for Nelson charity An African township of 30,000 now has clean running water and it’s all thanks to a Nelsonbased charity. Volunteers Matthew McDowell and Gideon Matorino, of Water for Prosperity, recently travelled to Torwood in Zimbabwe to aide the installation of three groundwater bores at a school, crèche and on council land. Before the trip, villagers were forced to walk for hours to get fresh water, or alternatively drank from a green, stagnant stream. “There’s a big mine next to it. The stream is green and it doesn’t move. Some people are washing in it and some people are drinking it,” explains Matthew. “Otherwise they were queuing for hours and hours just to get 20L of water. You can’t say these people are slackers though, they don’t have time to go out and get a job because they’ve got to get water.” The charity was set up following Gideon’s visit back home in 2012. There was no water to any houses during

Matthew had prepared himself for a culture shock when he arrived, but admits it was still overwhelming. “It was a bit of a shock to say the least. Just the poverty, people had very little. They had no possessions and it was very basic living. They had four walls and some of them had to share toilets which were piled up for weeks and weeks. It was horrendous conditions.” Twice water spewed out of the bores to scenes of jubilation
from the villagers. “People were crying and singing. We had opening ceremonies for the bores and everyone was just dancing and singing, it was incredible. They couldn’t believe that we were putting our time into it and how Nelsonsians had given their money to help them.” To fundraise for the venture, Water for Prosperity held Walk for Water, a 15km challenge from Richmond to Rabbit Island earlier this year. They also held a charity dinner at Trailways in a bid to make some last minute funds.

Origin Dance Crew is through to the semi-finals of New Zealand’s Got Talent, and the group’s coach believes they have the talent to go all the way. Meila Wilkins, Ashley Belk, Hayley Barnett, Hana Morris, Jorgia Marsh and Mikaela Cooper are the six members of the Car Company Origin Dance Crew, and were announced on Sunday night’s television show as the latest semifinalists, edging another step closer to the grand prize of $100,000 and a brand new Toyota RAV4. The members of Origin, who

Origin coach Gemma Laing, says the girls should appear on the semifinal screened on Labour Weekend. “We fly up next week and film the show then,” she says. “We’re always working on new stuff but there’s a bit of pressure to be better than your audition so you really need to step it up. It’s been fun though, and it’s totally different to making up a dance for a regular dance competition.”

Mention models and hobbies and most will automatically think dinky toys and plastic plane kitsets, however, time and technology have completely changed the face of modelling as visitors to this weekend’s Nelson Model & Hobby Expo at the Stoke Hall will be able to witness. While kitsets and scratchbuilding of models is still a huge part of the modelling scene, the advent of realistic and extremely detailed off-theshelf diecast and resin models has added a whole new dimen-
sion to the scene allowing those involved to build up extensive collections without having to find the time and patience to build from scratch. For many involved, what started out, usually early in life, as a hobby has now become an addiction. "Our focus for this expo has been to put together a display that incorporates the multiple facets that make up our chosen pastime,” says expo spokesman Bruce Jury. “Whilst our chosen feature is a tribute to Kiwi’s in motorsport, including a special display to one of Nelson’s great
drivers, the late Jason Richards, visitors can also expect to see in excess of 1000 items on display including hundreds of model cars, trucks, boats and heavy construction equipment plus steam engines, slot cars, Meccano models, decorated eggs and an extensive collection of Star Wars models.” The expo will be open to the public between 10am and 4pm on both Saturday and Sunday of this weekend at the Stoke Hall at a cost of just $5 per adult with children under 16 free if accompanied by an adult.

New mayor elected, what would you like to see her achieve? Well a good honest start with no undercover intentions of fooling Nelsonians would be a really great start. And a lot more for the lost teenagers would be even better, skate parks just don't cut it. Oh and live bands on the beach again over summer would be terrific, I found those so entertaining and I'm sure the tourists who come here over that period would love something back for nothing for all their

No quotes for work: Do some Nelson businesses not want the business!? Seriously. I have contacted two companies for a quote for a job which would be worth around $5000, and neither of them have come back to me three weeks later. No wonder some businesses go broke. Vent over. (Via text). Thanks from candidate: I would like to thank those who supported me during the local body elections. The number of votes I received was encouraging given my invisible profile and campaign. Congratulations to those elected and best wishes to all who stood. Let's all continue

At the turn of the century, saw-miller and Nelson Mayor Henry Baigent built this stately home near the top of Bronte Street. This is the Kiwi ¼ acre paradise, with plenty of bedrooms, bathrooms, garaging and central heating, on a tree-shaded section with enviable privacy and enjoying close proximity to town, colleges and primary schools. Rusty Riders – Shiny Riders Earlier this year TCC teamed up with Tony and Belinda Malabar from The Cycle Shop on Main Rd Stoke and the cycle group ‘Rusty Riders’ was born. The group is aimed at people who have not been on a bicycle for a while (50 years in one case) or who have lost their confidence. Bikes and helmets are provided along with advice and support to get people back up and riding again. The group has seen so many people regain this skill that a new group has sprung from it – ‘Shiny Riders’. Members of this group now go for a weekly cycle together. “It’s been fantastic to get so many people back up and exercising, socializing and making the most of Nelson’s great cycle tracks and weather” says Jo.

Makos want sell out for title game
31
SPORT
Phillip Rollo Reporter
editorial@waimeaweekly.co.nz "We haven't achieved anything yet", says Tom Marshall after winning the most important game in Tasman Makos history. Never before have the Makos reached the ITM Cup Championship final, but this Friday night Trafalgar Park will host them and Hawke's Bay as the two teams clash, hoping to win the title and the prize that comes with it – promotion to the Premiership. Tom has played in the Under-20 World Cup final and in Super Rugby playoffs with the Crusaders, but this time he will be representing his hometown, playing for his friends and his family. So it's easy to understand why the nerves have come back before kickoff. "This is a different feeling. I was coming into last weekend's game and I was a wee bit nervous, but I don't usually get nervous before a game," he says, in between signing autographs for his beloved fans at Blenheim's Lansdowne Park. "I guess it's because making the final is something Tasman has never done before and I really care about it. Come this weekend I'm sure there will be a few nerves amongst the team. Most of the boys have never been involved in finals footy before." Thinking ahead to Friday, Tom says it will be "emotional" running out onto the ground where he's had some very fond memories playing for Nelson, the Makos and Crusaders. "Growing up I always wanted to be a Tasman Mako and that's the same for most of the boys. We play with our heart on our sleeve and that's the special thing about this region." Fighting for a place to compete in the Premiership standings, Tasman managed to knock off four teams from the above division this year, including semi-finalists Counties Manakau. Tasman were a staggering 16 points ahead of last weekend's opponents Southland

Photo: Phillip Rollo. after the round robin, and with just two losses against their name, the Makos entered their playoff series knowing they had already beaten each of the other Championship semi-finalists. So it's no surprise that Tom didn't care who this weekend's opposition was going to be after beating Southland 49-28. "I think it'll be a psychological advantage for us knowing that we have beaten them. But at the end of the day this is a one off game and whoever plays the best rugby will win. We want to win that final and that's definitely the goal," he claimed before Hawke's Bay had even played Otago. Trafalgar Park has been a fortress this season. Otago, Hawke's Bay and Waikato all left empty handed. And Tom firmly believes home ground advantage can give Tasman an edge, having missed out on the final last year when the team travelled to Dunedin and lost to Otago at the semi-final stage. "It really takes the pressure off us. I think it'd be daunting for another team to have to come to Trafalgar Park. We haven't lost there this year and we've played some pretty good footy there. There's not a side, bar North Harbour, who have beaten us in the Championship so the pressure is all on them." Last time Hawke's Bay played in Nelson, which was just over a month ago,
the Magpies failed to fire and were kept try-less by a resolute Makos defense, going down 18-9. However, they still pose a real threat. In Ihaia West Hawke's Bay has one of the competition's most exciting players, and there's Super Rugby experience scattered across the team. While former All Black winger Zac Guilford is the most recognizable face, their captain Mike Coman is a former Waimea College student and his youngest brother was the school's first XV captain this year. Hawke's Bay were historic rivals with Nelson Bays during the NPC Division Two days, and both provinces were included in a revamped competition together in 2005. Tasman has had mixed success since Nelson Bays and Marlborough amalgamated. Prior to this season their best placing was beaten semi-finalists and they finished bottom of the table just two years ago. Now the first thing on their mind is this Friday, and Tom wants a sell out crowd to help his team get across the line. "The region has been really good and they're loving what we're doing. When teams are winning people jump on the bandwagon so hopefully we can get a sell out." Tickets for this Friday's match are on sale at www.makos.co.nz, Theatre Royal, I-Site, New World Nelson and Nelson School of Music.

Promising start for swimmers
Young swimmers from the Nelson Swimming Club last Saturday competed at the Blenheim Ribbon Allsorts Meet held in Blenheim. Most of them are new to the competitive swimming scene, with the more seasoned competitive swimmers not there as the meet fell during their two week break. Brooke Swan, who is just six years old, carried on her great form from last month and beat her personal best times in all her races including knocking over three seconds off her 25m backstroke race. Her brother Alec, 10, set new first times in the breaststroke, freestyle and backstroke all over 50 metres. Zoey Murray, nine, also beat her personal best times in all her races, including dropping her 50m freestyle time by almost five seconds and her 100m medley time by almost three seconds which was fantastic. Emma Fox, 10, also carried on her great form from last month beating her personal best times in the 50m breaststroke and 50m backstroke, both by over two seconds. Emma’s younger sister Kimberley, who is only seven years old, competed for the very first time and she swam well in all five races she entered. The Munro brothers Benjamin, 12, and Jack, 11, both enjoyed themselves, with Benjamin beating his personal best time in four out of the six races he entered including dropping his 50m breaststroke time by over three seconds, while Jack set new first times in all five races he entered.

Stoke-Nayland hold on for draw With just first innings points up for grabs and the unavailability of rep players, it was a fairly disruptive start to the two-day cricket season. The headlining fixture of the first round of games was the clash between last year’s finalists Stoke-Nayland and Waimea Toi Toi United at the Marsden Rec. However, honours had to be shared as WTTU, who won the competition last year, declared at 235-4 with Stoke-Nayland ending the day at 167-8 in reply. WTTU middle order batsman Mason Thelin was the star of the show on 123 not out off just 116 balls, which in-
cluded 14 boundaries. It was Mason’s first century for the club after making his senior debut in 2005. And while leg spinner Sam Field claimed a five wicked haul on debut, Stoke-Nayland’s tail held out just long enough for the draw. When asked if he could take much out of the result, captain Ryan Edwards, who was away playing for Nelson, says the fact his team wasn’t beaten was a positive. “In situations when you’re trying to make a final, getting every point and preventing the opposition from getting points is key,” he says. “It has been disruptive with the weather, but to blow out the cobwebs was good
and hopefully going forward it puts us in good stead.” With representative players away, senior clubs had to rely on their depth, and Ryan was pleased to hear that last year’s division two captain Mo Taylor scored a half century and young bowler Josh Sansom bagged three wickets. “It tests your depth of talent that’s for sure and I think that’s why teams end up in the finals, because they’ve got the depth.” In the two other matches, Wanderers claimed a first innings victory over ACOB and Motueka grabbed a first innings win over Wakatu.

Running from Nelson to Richmond in under an hour Kim Hogarth battled blisters on his achilles but still couldn’t be caught on Sunday morning’s Nelson to Richmond 10 Miler. Kim was the only competitor to run under an hour, making his way past the finish line opposite Bar 321 in Richmond in 57 minutes and 37 seconds. Participants started the race in Victory Square, took a detour via Monaco and then carried along the Richmond Deviation to the finish. Simon Leaning was second in the men’s race with a time of 60 minutes and 59
seconds with Scott Howley third in 66 minutes 44 seconds. In the women’s race Robyn Deane was the clear winner, finishing in 69 minutes and 29 seconds, ten minutes clear of Magreet Petheram and Lisa Tunicliff. Big rigs create big fundraiser for school
Stoke School’s Truck Show was so successful organisers might need to find another venue for next year’s event. More than 50 big rigs were on display at the school grounds on Saturday, and $4000 was raised from it. But Melanie Edwards, who is on the PTA and helped organise the event, says there was simply no room for more trucks, and some drivers had to be turned away in the weeks leading up to it. “We may outgrow it but it’ll always be a Stoke School PTA fundraiser,” says Melanie. “For a group of nine ladies on the PTA it was a bit of an unknown. We raised the money from a gold coin on the gate and from the food we sold so I think $4000 was great.” Melanie says the truck drivers, who stuck around to watch the Tasman Makos game on a big screen at the school, loved the event. “They really enjoyed it and looked forward to the next one. This just hasn’t been done here for such a long time. Being a school of our size, in an area of our size, it’s always hard getting man power on the day of events and galas take so much man power. We’ve got trucks ourselves so it was just a case of coming up with something new.”

Nelson Dawnbreakers Fishing Club What a stunner of a weekend that has just gone. Warm beautiful sunny skies, albeit with a little wind thrown in for good measure. But don’t get too excited as the long range forecast includes some rain. I’m ever hopeful that it will be wrong but several websites are predicting showers and gusty winds for Labour Weekend. But get the boat fuelled up and ready just in case because you just never know this far out. The kayakers have informed me they have been catching gurnard, Kahawai and small snapper in and around Cable Bay, as well as Okiwi Bay. Flasher rigs from 2/0 up to 6/0 hooks with small bits of pillies have been doing the damage. As of Sunday the odd big fish has been caught in Tasman Bay but the water temperature is still a bit cool for them to come in yet and with a wet week ahead it will further slow them down. Recently some Dawnbreakers took part in the annual Nelson North Country Competition. Historically Dawn breakers have performed well in this event and this year turned out to be another success for members of the club. Team Atawhai consisting of Dan Fisher, Reid Forrest, and Aaron Quarterman won the Big Three comp. Dan said they had to bag a stag/ boar/snapper which they managed to just in time for the weigh in but it came with a large lack of sleep and a lot of miles covered over the 3 days of the hunt. Dan Fisher caught the Snapper on board his boat (Tight Lines) on a slow jig out in the deep in Tasman Bay. They all said it was a neat comp and would be looking forward to it again next year. On Sunday the Dawnbreakers Fishing Club had their first club social day held at The Tasman Bay Cruising Club. As an example of how the club helps its members, we are actively promoting safety on the water by encouraging and discounting
Dan fisher with a 77cm snapper caught in Tasman Bay on a slow jig. the price to members, to partake in a Day Skippers course. We believe that everyone that owns a watercraft would be safer having done the course. We have also organised weekends away as well as day trips on the club calendar. We also have regular guest speakers on a variety of topics every month. Our guest speaker this month from MPI Fisheries (MAF) was able to go through the ins and outs of the rules regarding catching cod in the Marlborough Sounds, size/bag limits on finfish, and the laws on the use of longlines. It was very informative and enabled members to have points clarified that they were not sure about. For example did you know that no person may use or be in possession of more than one line (other than handlines or rod and reel lines). All surface floats attached to any line must be marked with the fisher's initials and surname. A phone number is also useful. No person may use or possess a line with more than 25 hooks. Where more than one person is using a line from a vessel (other than handlines or rod and reel lines), no more than two lines (other than handlines or rod and reel lines) may be used, set from or possessed on board that vessel. Tennis clubs to benefit from Hot Shots
Clubs are hoping to reap the rewards of Tennis New Zealand’s new Hot Shots program, which was officially launched last week and is aimed at getting more primary-aged children playing the sport at a club level. Previously Tennis New Zealand’s major kids program was Grasshoppers, which involved training sessions at schools and was followed by a tournament. The new initiative is aimed at making sure school children who enjoy or excel in
tennis carry on to a community set up, before eventually joining a club – in Alison McQullian’s words “creating a better pathway”. “We’re not seeing enough children from the schools coming into the clubs. Tennis is seen is a bit of an elitist sport and we want to break that barrier down,” she says. There are four main components of Hot Shots; schools, coaching, community play and tournaments. Commu-
nity play is a new aspect, and can be run by club volunteers, parents or coaches. It’s a playbased program which gives all of the children to participate in a “fun, supportive” environment with specifically sized racquets, balls and courts, and without the need of a professional coach. So far, Hope, Motueka, Tasman, Nelson Lawns and Wakapuaka clubs were signed up to Hot Shots, which is aimed at children age 3-12.
Saxton Stadium offers week of free activities Sport Tasman is celebrating the re-opening of Saxton Stadium with a week of free activities for the community starting as of yesterday. Following the disastrous floods that hit the stadium on April 21, the complex was reopened last week and Sport Tasman is passionate about getting the community back into the stadium. And to help make this happen it has come up with a full week of free activities to entice the public in. “This initiative is about re-engaging our community with Saxton Stadium after it was closed for so long because of flood damage. It was great having the South Island Masters on last week and we believe this free week of activity will further build on the message that Saxton Stadium is back in business,” says Sport Tasman CEO Nigel Muir. “Summer is just around the corner and this is a great opportunity for people to get more active, more often,” he says. The free week runs from Monday October 21-25 and includes free court hire between 3-6pm. There’s also free super circuit classes and senior shape up classes from 9.1510.15am, free senior walking group sessions from 10-11am, free core n floor and core balance classes and free indoor bowls, golf, volleyball and badminton sessions from 1112noon. Also free table tennis 9am – 12noon. For a full timetable check out www.sporttasman.org.nz/saxton_stadium or contact Sport Tasman at the Stadium on 538 0072.

NelsoN Bays U18 RUgBy Team 2013
The 2013 Nelson Bays Under 18 Representative Rugby Team were bought together from Nelson and Tasman Schools and Clubs. Beginning their campaign in late August, their goal, after a very positive first five games, was to be successful in the South Island Under 18’s tournament held in Christchurch, which bought together the top Under 18 teams from the South Island. The season started with good wins over an invitational side (70-0) and Buller Development (710). Further wins against Marlborough (51-3) Canterbury Country (46-0) and Canterbury Metro (17-12) meant they entered the tournament in fine form. At the South Island Tournament a first up loss to Otago Metro (3-10) followed by wins against North Otago (33-10) and Marlborough in the Bowl Final (24-0) ensured the team left the Tournament
