Rugby fan drives to work drunk A Nelson All Blacks fan was caught driving to work while drunk at around 7am yesterday morning. Senior Sergeant John Price says a 47 year old woman was stopped for speeding in Stoke about 7.20am. The drink driver was stopped on her way to work after she had got up early and watched the All Blacks play Argentina in
the Rugby World Cup on television. She was driving more than 20kmh over the posted speed limit. A breath alcohol test revealed the woman was close to four times over the legal limit at 943 microgrammes of alcohol per litre of breath. Senior Sergeant Price says there were three very concerning factors to the incident.
“Firstly we have a drunk driver, secondly she is driving well in excess of the speed limit and thirdly she is heading to work. I’m just relieved she was stopped before she, or anyone else, was harmed by her actions.” He says police would continue to be vigilant on the roads throughout the Rugby World Cup games.
He also says employers should have a conversation with their staff about expectations around staff consuming alcohol before arriving for work. “We all want to get behind the All Blacks and enjoy the rugby, but if you’re driving after the game our advice is to not drink alcohol and if you drink, don’t drive,” he says.
Sun shines but Cherry Blossoms stay away Even with the cherry blossoms still tucked away, this year’s Cherry Blossom Festival remained an impressive display of Japanese culture. Chairperson of the Nelson Miyazu Sister City Association, Lyndal McMeeking, says there were more than 2000 at the festival, which was more than anticipated. The Nelson Cherry Blossom Festival was created to celebrate the Nelson-Miyazu sister city relationship and to observe the coming of the cherry blossoms, a traditional spring festival in Japan. The festival also raises awareness of the Japanese culture in Nelson, a city that over 100 Japanese families call home. The Nelson-Miyazu sister city relationship has been alive for 39 years, the second longest sister city relationship between a Japanese city and a New Zealand city. “One of the highlights was an extra long performance by the Raijin Taiko Drumming group. It was very well supported and people really enjoyed it, and as a result the Raijin group got 30 people signed up for a Taiko drummng workshop,” says Lyndal. Other attractions included plenty of Japanese food, demonstrations of both Kendo and Aikido and big brush calligraphy from Akiko Crowther.

Groups rally to keep Nelson beautiful
Kate Russell
Nelsonians young and old took to the streets last week to help ‘spring clean’ the city, as part of Keep New Zealand Beautiful Week. There were three events in Nelson over the week as part of the
national initiative, which is not just about clean-ups, but building and strengthening communities. Saturday morning’s event in Atawhai saw a handful of residents brave the rain to pick up rubbish in Corder Park. Organiser and local resident Dianne Macdonald says she decided to
register the event online. “It was really easy to do,” she says. “Keep New Zealand Beautiful provided all the rubbish and recycling bags, gloves and certificates, and Nelmac are giving us free dumping of the rubbish.” Events were also held at Pioneers Park in Washington Valley, and

Victory Square, which were organised by Rob Brown from the Victory Community Centre. Rob says they had about 16 people help to fill six big bags of rubbish on Wednesday around Pioneers Park and its surrounding streets. “Most of the rubbish we collected was mainly confectionary wrappers, lolly pop sticks and things like that,” he says. In the Victory Square area on Friday they filled four bags of rubbish, which Rob says consisted of lots of empty alcohol cans and cigarette butts. “It was a really great event - we had a couple of girls join in who just happened to be walking past, and we found some interesting things such as an old skateboard, and a little boy found a make-up case which he thought was a pretty cool treasure,” says Rob. Rob says they hope to make the clean-ups a regular event in the future.

Fish illegally sold on social media Simon Bloomberg Online black markets sales of fish using social media are increasing rapidly with 117 cases around New Zealand so far this year, including three in Nelson. The Ministry of Primary Industries first encountered the problem in 2012 when four cases of online black market fish trading were identified. That escalated to 39 cases in 2013, 173 cases in 2014 and 117 cases to the end of August this year, and MPI compliance director Dean Baigent says offenders are facing prosecution and potentially big fines. It is illegal for people to buy, sell or swap their recreational catch, Dean says. Depending on the scale of offending, people risk facing prosecution and fines of up to $250,000 as well as forfeiture of any gear used in the offence, including computers and cellphones. “Many businesses have taken their products online, including illegitimate businesses and opportunists. Once upon a time someone offered you some cheap crays and paua at the pub - now people are getting Facebook alerts.” Dean says they closed an Auck-

However, the scale of offending in Nelson doesn’t appear to be as big, with a MPI spokesperson telling the Nelson Weekly that all three cases were “at the lower end of the spectrum”. The cases involved crayfish, kahawai and snapper, and MPI sent the offenders a message formally warning them that selling recreationally caught
fish is an offence, and directing them to take the post down. “We informed them that their details have been recorded in the compliance database and further offences will be dealt with more seriously. We have taken no prosecutions or issued instant fines for this activity in Nelson.” Dean says fisheries officers and intelligence staff have been quick to adapt to offending online. “The pleasing thing is that people are quick to tell us about this sort of activity, no matter where it happens. We get a lot of calls to our 0800 4POACHER hotline about online posts offering cheap seafood. Six people have been prosecuted so far this year for trading black market fish on social media. One person was sentenced to 225 hours community service, while another was fined $8550. MPI gave three further people infringement notices and instant fines of between $300 and $500. Dean says people who buy black market seafood pose as much risk to our fisheries as those who do the illegal fishing. “If there are no willing buyers, there is no black market.”

HABITAT PREMIUM BLINDS
Makos respond to Canterbury billboard: “Tasman, you play great rugby, in a runners-up, bridesmaid kind of way.” It was the words that sent Tasman Makos rugby fans into a spin when it was plastered on a billboard and parked outside the main entrance to the Makos home ground, Trafalgar Park, last month. What incensed fans even more was the supposed author, “Regards, Canterbury”, it read. The sign was latter revealed to be part of a marketing campaign by New Zealand Rugby in an effort to create greater rivalry amongst provincial unions in the ITM Cup. But Tasman has hit back with a billboard spotted on Richmond’s Gladstone Rd this morning reading: “Canterbury, so where’d you end up on the table last year? Regards, Makos.” The answer is, of course, behind Tasman in the final standings. The red and black men then failed to reach the final, where Tasman lost to Taranaki.

Police plan blitz on drivers using their cellphone
Nelson Police are targeting people who use their cellphone while driving, as part of a national campaign. Nelson Bays Area Commander Mat ArnoldKelly says drivers using cellphones was becoming a common sight on the area’s roads and people needed to realise that the risk they were taking with their own and other road users’ lives was unacceptable. “It’s not just cellphones, but any other distractions that take the driver’s attention away from driving that create a risk,” he says. “The driver’s attention should be on the road and people need to resist the urge to answer the phone. The easiest way to do that is to turn it off when you turn the car on,” he said. He also urged callers to end the call if they became aware that the person they were speaking with was driving. Ministry of Transport data shows that in 2014, ‘diverted attention’ was identified as a contributing factor in a total 1,053 crashes (12 percent of all crashes), which resulted in 22 people being killed and a further 191 sustaining serious injuries. The total social cost of crashes involving diverted attention was about $297 million. For the past five years it has been illegal to text or use a mobile phone when driving, even when a car is stationary at traffic lights or in a queue. The penalty for offending is an $80 infringement fee and 20 demerit points. If 100 demerit points are accumulated within 2 years, the driver will lose their licence for 3 months.

ETHNIC FASHION SHOW: Leonora Soares, left, represents Brazil in the inaugural ‘A Night of Ethnic Fashion’. The evening was created and organised by Sharon Page-Moreton, owner of Creative Occasions, and Claudia Forts Fortaleza of Wakefield Preschool. The fashion show showcased the traditional garments worn by five different countries: the Phillipines, Japan, India, Brazil and New Zealand/Aotearoa. The audience was also given a taste of the music and food of each participating country. As well as the chance to experience other cultures, A Night of Ethnic Fashion was also an opportunity to raise funds for the Nelson Marlborough Rescue Helicopter’s new winch. Owner of old photos a mystery Kate Russell
A local restaurant is seeking the owner of some old photos that were left there almost a year ago. The packet of “precious looking” original photos and some reprints were left at one of the tables at Fords Restaurant and Bar on Trafalgar St, and owner Kerry Ford says that they would love to get them back to their owner. “When I found the photos, I put them in the safe without even looking at them, thinking someone would come back to claim them,” says Kerry. But no one did. “I found them the other day when I was cleaning out the safe and I was going to throw them out, but then I decided to have a proper look.” “When I saw they were originals, I couldn’t throw them away – they are obviously someone’s precious family photos and someone has gone to a lot of effort to get the creases out and get them reprinted.” Even though it has been almost a year since they were left there, Kerry is hopeful they will be able to reunite the photos with their owner. “They look like they are really cherished and I’d hate to have to throw them out,” she says.

The former chair of Air New Zealand and Solid Energy will lead a group to oversee the merger of Nelson Tasman Tourism and the Nelson Regional Economic Development Agency into a single organisation. Waimea West’s John Palmer will head the Transition Group, which will also include Paul Dalzell, Phil Taylor, Martin Byrne and Chris Jackson. The Transition Group has been appointed following a review of Nelson’s Economic Development Service agencies, which recommended integrating NTT and EDA and creating a new CCO, to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of economic development activities in the region. “A smooth transition from the current structure to the new body will be crucial for embedding the new organisation. The council has appointed members to the group that we believe will achieve this outcome,” says Nelson mayor Rachel Reese. Both NTT and EDA will continue until the new organisation is established in July 2016.

Doctor recognised for leading research Research by a group of emergency doctors at Nelson Hospital is flying in the face of traditional ways to treat patients with chest pain – but it is working. Research headed by Dr Andrew R Munro, called accelerated diagnostic pathway, allows patients coming into the emergency department at Nelson Hospital with chest pains to be assessed quickly and effectively. The work was recognised last Thursday when Dr Munro was the Excellence Winner for Health and Quality Innovation Award from the Nelson Marlborough District Health Board. The research has been published in the New Zealand Medical Journal but Nelson remains the only hospital using the technique. The accelerated decision pathway was shown to be a rapid and safe method of determining which patients, who present to the Emergency Department with chest pain of a possible heart attack, were safe for discharge. Dr Munro says the results showed that more than 70 per cent of chest pain patients were safely discharged from ED with no significant adverse events at 30 days. With no
missed cases, and unprecedented and timely discharge rates for chest pain patients, the protocol is now a clinical pathway in use at Nelson Hospital’s Emergency Department. “New Zealand’s emergency departments currently see about 50,000 chest pain patients a year, so it’s critical to have expertise right there at the front door providing patient-centred quality care in an increasingly complex and constrained medical environment,” he says. Dr Andrew Munro has had a long relationship with Nelson Hospital, first as a registered nurse more than 25 years ago, then as a junior doctor, before specialising in emergency medicine as a Fellow of the Australasian College for Emergency Medicine. He has worked in many urban and rural EDs in Australia, England and New Zealand. A full-time emergency specialist in Nelson since 2009, he is a founding member of the New Zealand Emergency Medicine Network, a group of like-minded Emergency Department doctors, nurses and allied health professionals, motivated to produce quality research in New Zealand.

Memory boxes help older folk remember their past A new borrowing scheme at the Elma Turner Library is helping Nelson rest-home residents connect with their past. ‘Memory boxes’ are suitcases filled with interesting everyday objects that help to stimulate memories and spark conversation. They are loaned to rest-homes as part of the free home delivery service that the library offers. Katie Sellars, a home delivery services library assistant at the Elma Turner Library, says the boxes have been very popular. “The idea is the objects in the boxes can trigger memories for people, and therapists find them really useful for working with people in small groups, or one to one,” she says. “We’ve had feedback from therapists who have said they have been able to connect with someone who hasn’t spoken for a few months. They pick up an object and it seems to resonate with them in some way or opens up some sort of pathway into

a memory. Apart from that, it gives people something to talk about and to think about.” There are three different boxes, including a ‘home box’ which contains a home barber’s kit, old sewing patterns, and even a pair of old hair curling irons - which kept the library staff guessing for quite some time. There is ‘work box’ containing photos of apple harvesting in Motueka and hand tools, and a ‘miscellaneous box’ which includes an old box brownie camera and film reel canisters. Katie says they are hoping to add a ‘childhood box’ and a ‘wedding box’ to the collection too. The boxes were started by Christina Hardy, a volunteer at Founders Heritage Park. Katie says she believes it was an idea she brought over from England, and many of the items come from Founders. The boxes were handed

Kensington Court Rest Home in Stoke and The Wood Retirement Village are just two the rest-homes that have used them.

Katie says the memory boxes brings an exciting element to their free home delivery service, which sources and delivers books to housebound residents in Nelson. If you would like to find out more about the memory boxes or enquire about the home delivery service, you can call 546 8100.

PM goes nuts for Nelson peanut butter
Jasmine Webber and Olivia Smith enjoy their day at the Hope School Country Bazaar and Silent Auction last Saturday. The day may have started out in a miserable state but the fair was anything but, the rain lifting just in time for the gates to open. The school’s bazaar managed to raise around $30,000, which will be going towards teaching resources such as additional school laptops and further teaching support throughout the school. Photo: Jessie Johnston.
Simon Bloomberg Prime Minister John Key is a bit of a fan of Pic’s Peanut Butter, so that’s why Nelson MP Nick Smith arranged for John to visit of Pic’s Wakatu Estate factory when he was in Nelson last week. “I knew the Prime Minister was a fan so I organised the visit here,” Nick says. “When I told him he said, ‘that’s where they make that peanut butter’ - he was very excited about it. “But I also wanted to bring him here because Pic’s is a fantastic business that tells the story of New Zealanders taking opportunities in places where you don’t usually expect to find them. I remember visiting Pic’s when he was running it out of his garage and now he employs 40 staff. “A lot of people say you can’t take on the big corporations, but Pic has done it with his dynamism, a great product and staff, and slightly arty, out-there marketing. It’s a real Nelson success story.” John talked to staff at Pic’s during last Thursday’s visit and signed a jar of Pic’s Peanut Butter he personally filled labelling ‘John’s and Pic’s Peanut Butter’. “It’s amazing,” Pic says. “It’s exciting for everyone, especially my mum and dad because they have been voting National all their lives.” The Prime Minister had earlier spoken at the Aquaculture New Zealand annual conference during his visit to Nelson and later opened the New Zealand Classic Motorcycle Museum.

‘Restore’ fully stocked and ready to open It has taken four months, 20 volunteers and more than 3000 pieces of donated items, but this Saturday the Habitat for Humanity “Restore” will finally open to the public. The Restore model is used by Habitat for Humanity affiliates across the country to raise funds. In Nelson, the store will rely on around 40 volunteers and donated goods from the wider public. Profits will then go to the local branch to be spent on building homes. Restore manager Becky Wyatt says it’s been a huge effort to get the building ready and the stock brought in, but she’s delighted with the progress they’ve made. “It’s been really positive to see how many donations have come through and the response from volunteers has been great, an amazing number of people want to give their time to Habitat for Humanity.” Last night, the national CEO of Habitat for Humanity visited the store in a special celebration with the volunteers who have helped make it happen. Becky says there will be some great bargains for paint enough. | wallpaper | curtains those who arrive early “More than |I blinds expected. There’s some really high quality stuff that we’ve had donated.” The Restore, at 73 Quarantine Rd, stocks household goods including building materials, tools, furniture and other items. It will open for the first time this Saturday from 10am to 2pm. After that, its hours will be from 9am to 5pm Monday to Friday, and from 10am to 2pm on Saturdays. Thank you after funeral: Through you newspapers I would like to thank Val and Laurie Anisy from Anisy’s funeral home in Cambridge St Richmond. Recently my companion of 15 years died and I had to take care of the funeral arrangements. I first contacted another funeral directors but I have to say that when it became obvious to them I did not have very much money, they lost interest. Maybe I am naive but I really struggled

with that. I just assumed that there was a funeral package to suit all incomes. My last desperate call was to Val at Anisy's Funeral Home in Richmond opposite the town hall. I was pretty much a mess by the time I got to her, I was genuinely starting to panic. She put on the jug, got out the biscuits and sat down with me. When I explained I had very little money, she still treated me with dignity and respect. Even Laurie Anisy popped out to Bunnings that night to get a toolbox (my partner was a mechanic)to put the ashes in a bit later, he came back and made a name plate to pop on the side. This was all unasked for and I’m sure at very little profit to him. But this gesture meant the world to me and only cost me $40 as opposed to the $1100 for a wooden ashes box I was previously quoted by the “flash” undertakers. Even taking the body to the crematorium was made easier by the support this couple gave me. Val and Laurie, thank you for your genuine caring of me in my time of need and thank you for helping me give Jamie the send off he would have liked. I want others to know that you don’t have to get whacked with bills of thousands of dollars to have a decent, loving and professional funeral. Thanks also to the staff at Winz. I appreciate your help. L Boreham. To have your say on any local issue, email editorial@nelsonweekly.co.nz

Nelson swim school wins national title Nelson’s Riverside Pool is celebrating after taking out two titles at the annual CLM awards earlier this month. They won the award for ‘SwimMagic swim school of the year,’ and ‘most improved shop of the year.’ Riverside swim school coordinator Lisa Bergman says winning swim school of the year is a “mas-
sive achievement,” for the pool, and it is the first time they have ever won the award. “It’s amazing,” she says. “We’re the smallest swim school for CLM and it’s really cool knowing that all our hard work has paid off. We have a great relationship with our customers and give them the best customer service that we can. It has definitely been a team effort.”

The swim school has been going from strength to strength, with an 18 per cent growth in enrolment numbers in the past year, and for the first time ever they reached over 500 enrolments each week during term two, which Lisa says is a “huge achievement.” Lisa, who has been the coordinator at Riverside for the past two years, was previously a swim school instructor at the ASB aquatic centre in Richmond, and won the award for ‘SwimMagic
Riverside Pool staff members Jo Perrott, Kori the Penguin and Lisa Bergman, with the awards that they won. instructor of the year’ in 2011. “This is my eighth year and I absolutely love it,” she says.
She and Riverside Facility Manager Dave McKenzie attended the awards in Auckland on September 4th, where they also picked up the award for ‘most improved shop of the year.’ The shop has a new area and sells the best range of swimwear and accessories. Riverside Pool’s SwimMagic swim school offers swimming lessons for all ages, from babies to adults. Enrolments for term four are open. Golfers are back in the driving seat Andrew Board
Fixing your slice or hook has been made a lot easier after the Nelson Golf Club's driving range was re-opened on Saturday. The range was close two years ago after Nelson Airport, which owns the land,
didn't renew the lease, saying they had plans for the area. But those plans have taken a back seat, allowing the club to reopen the range on a year-by-year lease. Club pro at the club says it's fantastic to have it open again as it's the only driving range in Nelson.
"It covers everyone, really. Whether you want to practise to become elite in the game, or you're just starting out and want to give golf a go," he says Buckets of balls from small to large cost from $4 to $12 and the range is open 7 days.

Three Nelson teams will be defending their titles when they line up in Saturday's Spring Challenge Adventure Race in Wanaka, with Penny Sue Franklin and Vicky Shelling going for a four-peat in the nine-hour veteran's category. Last year, Penny Sue and Vicky teamed with Jo Harris to win the veteran's race, but this year they will be joined by Jane Martin with Jo still recovering from a nasty injury suffered in a mountainbike crash. Nelson's Susie Wood will be teaming with Sophie Hart and Fleur Pawsey to defend their nine-hour open title, while Marjolein Edwards, Jackie MacIntyre and Pam Morris are back to defend their veteran six-hour title in the all-women's event. Although Penny Sue's team has dominated the veteran's race and have trained hard again for this year's edition, she says they are taking nothing for granted. "Every year is different because you don't know who's going to turn up," Penny Sue says. "We don't worry about trying to win - we just take the attitude that we are out there for an adventure and we'll race our own race and enjoy it." A record 1200 competitors have entered the event that will feature rafting, mountainbiking and trekking.
Try something new Spring is finally here! A good time to review your “bucket list” and tick off some of the things you have always wanted to learn, perhaps another language or maybe an art or technology course. Young skier following in parents snow tracks Nelson Girls Prep student Lily Scott showed plenty of speed to blitz the intermediate girls race at the Solander Rainbow Inter-Primary School Ski Champs held last week. The 13 year-old from Ruby Bay won in a combined time of 78.48 seconds for the two giant slalom runs, over 10 seconds faster than her second-placed schoolmate Olivia Patterson. Incredibly, Lily's time was faster than all but two of the intermediate boys, won by Nelson Boys Prep Henry Hufflett in 65.98sec. Lily also teamed up with her younger sister Neve, aged 11, and Olivia Smith (92.12) and Olivia YankovReid to win the intermediate girls' team's section with a combined time of 264.85sec. But no one was really surprised at Lilly's super fast times. Proud mum Su Scott was a professional ski instructor for many years, while Lily's father Dave represented New Zealand in the downhill at the 1992 Winter Olympics in France. Dave, who met Su when they were both ski instructors at Rainbow, is also a member of the exclusive 200 Club, having reached 201.559 kmh at Les Arc in France in 1991. He finished 33rd at Albertville and also has a top placing of 14th in World Cup downhills. "Lily started skiing at Mt Hutt when she was three and had three seasons at Mt Hutt and three at Porter Heights," Dave says. "She's been skiing at Rainbow since we moved to Nelson in 2011 and this year she started training every Sunday with the development programme, which has helped her a lot." Lily's winning time may have been super-fast but she isn't getting ahead of herself. Lily says she will be starting back at square one again next season when she starts competing against secondary school students. "I was really nervous before the first run," Lily says. "I was second last
Lily Scott, centre, on the podium with Olivia Patterson, left, and Holly McKendry, after winning the intermediate girls' race at Rainbow Ski Area last week. year but didn't know how I'd go this year. But it's going to be harder next year. I'll be skiing against year 13 girls." Although Lily has abundant potential, Dave says they won't be pushing her to follow in their ski tracks. "It's kind of nice that she is a good skier and we both enjoy doing it with them, but she has lots of other interests so we won't be pushing her. If she wants to go ahead it will have to be her only focus and she will probably need to go to college in Wanaka, so it would be a big commitment." Nelson Boys Prep's Henry Hufflett, Ollie Fergusson, Robbie McIntosh and Hunter Sharp won the intermediate boys team's race, and Clifton Terrace School's Ruby Fullerton, Fletcher Hewitt-Smart, Tom Hoare and Adam Barton won the primary school's team's race. Hampden Street School's Rebecca Hufflet won the primary school girls' race, while Springlands' Tom McKendry edged out Nelson Central School's Dylan Ferguson and Clifton Terrace School's Fletcher Hewitt-Smart in the primary boys' race.

Sea swim raises cash for charity
Fifty-six swimmers braved toetingling water temperatures in the Nelson Haven on Sunday to race 600 metres, symbolising the 600 New Zealand men who die from Prostate Cancer each year, to raise almost $2500 for the Prostate Cancer Foundation. Apart from the chilly water temperature of around 12 de-
grees Celsius, the annual fundraising swim was held in perfect conditions, with a calm sea and minimal tidal current. Simon Kneebone certainly enjoyed the conditions coming out the water first in a fast 6 minutes 51 seconds. Jody Keefe-Laing was second in 7min 2sec with Jon Linyard third in 7min 8sec.
Event organiser Matt Hansen did well to finish fifth in 7min 20sec after swimming with an over-sized bra on the outside of his wetsuit as part of a dare that raised $100 for the Prostate Cancer Foundation. Kerry Mathieson was the fastest woman, finishing in 7min 28sec, with Jude Vincent the second female in 7min 56sec.

Local gymnasts off to nationals Simon Bloomberg Seven Nelson rhythmic gymnasts have been training up to 17 hours a week as they prepare for the New Zealand GymSports national championships in the Trusts Arena Auckland, starting on Monday. The Nelson Rhythmic Gymnastics Club's Beth Strickland, Gracie Kroos, Amy Miles, Sam Wilson, Sam Carney, Renee Macrae and Lily McLean will represent the Top of the South at the six-day championship that will also feature trampolining, tumbling, men's and women's artistic gymnastics and sports aerobics. The team's head coach Yvonne Bradley says the girls have all shown some good form this season, competing in four to five competitions around the country to prepare for nationals. She says Beth is the South Island level 8 champion, Gracie, who will compete in Level 7, is the South Island and national Level 6 champion, while Sam Carney won the Level 4 South Island. Renee, who has competed at nationals for four years, will be the No2 ranked competitor in the Level 7 competition after finishing second in the South Island champs and third in the Canterbury champs. Lily finished second at CanNelson gymnasts, from left, Sam Wilson, Gracie Kroos, Sam Carney, Lily McLean, Renee Macrae, Beth Strickland and Amy terbury and fourth at South Islands while Amy was third in Level 7 at the South Islands. Miles, are heading to Auckland for the national champs. Photo: Yvonne Bradley. "At her best, Beth could get a national placing and Gracie is defending her title," Yvonne says. "Renee has had good results too and they have all done four or five competitions around New Zealand to get experience, so they are all wellprepared. "But anything can happen in rhythmic gymnastics. You only need to drop a ball and that's it." The Nelson Rhythmic Gymnastics Club team Applications for Coaches/Managers completed its preparation for nationals with a display in the Nelson College for Girls gym on for the 2015/16 Rugby Season for Registration Day Saturday 26 September Saturday.

Athletics presidential title kept in the family Newly-appointed president of the New Zealand Children's Athletics Association, Nelson's Brian Cockeram, won't have to go far to get good advice about the job that oversees 18,000 young athletes around the country. Brian was elected as president at last month's annual general meeting and will serve a two year term in the job after already spending two years as vice-president. But the long-serving official and administrator isn't the first one in his family to fill the role, with his wife Jan serving as president from 2012 to 2013. "If I have any problems, I'll just ask my wife what she would have done," Brian jokes. "But it shouldn't be a problem because I've been involved in officiating and administration of athletics for a long time - I'm very familiar with the system." Brian and Jan first became involved in athletics as competitors in Southland. Brian was a "useful" middle distance runner while Jan was a thrower, with both representing Southland at national championships. Coaching, officiating and administrating were the next steps for the Cockerams who continued their involvement in the sport when they moved to Nelson in 2002.
They now have a combined total of over 80 years of service to athletics and Brian says it's not over yet. "I've got two years as president and then you do another two years as immediate past president, so by the time I finish it will be a six year commitment," Brian says. "But we wouldn't still be doing it if we didn't enjoy it." The next big challenge for the Cockerams and a dedicated army of Nelson parents will be organising the South Island Colgate Games, to be held at Saxton Field Athletics Track in January. Interestingly, Jan was president when the Colgate Games were last held Local couple Brian and Jan Cockeram are getting ready for the Colgate Games in Nelson in January. in Nelson in 2012 Brian says about 1000 athletes Photo: Simon Bloomberg. will be competing at the three-day games that will require 120 volunteers to ensure they run smoothly. Although it will be Brian's first Colgate Games as president, he doesn't expect his role to change. "I've been competitive director of the Colgate Games for the last four or five years and will be doing that again. It means I'll miss out on some of the official president's duties but that's not an issue, that Four Tasman Makos warmed up for last week's big win against North Harbour at Trafalgar Park sort of thing is not me." by visiting the children at Hardykids Early Learning Centre. Quentin MacDonald, Brock Kaahu, The Colgate Games, which are a Trael Joass and Kade Poki as well as team mascot MarCo, visited the centre last week. Hardykids non-selected meeting with a focus manager Trudy Smith says they are keen supporters of the Makos and have a Hardykids tent at all on participation for children aged the Trafalgar Park games so they can invite staff, teachers and families to watch the Makos play. 7-14, have been held for 38 years.
