Rugby fan drives to work drunk A Nelson All Blacks fan was caught driving to work while drunk at around 7am yesterday morning. Senior Sergeant John Price says a 47 year old woman was stopped for speeding in Stoke about 7.20am. The drink driver was stopped on her way to work after she had got up early and watched the All Blacks play Argentina in
the Rugby World Cup on television. She was driving more than 20kmh over the posted speed limit. A breath alcohol test revealed the woman was close to four times over the legal limit at 943 microgrammes of alcohol per litre of breath. Senior Sergeant Price says there were three very concerning factors to the incident.
“Firstly we have a drunk driver, secondly she is driving well in excess of the speed limit and thirdly she is heading to work. I’m just relieved she was stopped before she, or anyone else, was harmed by her actions.” He says police would continue to be vigilant on the roads throughout the Rugby World Cup games.
He also says employers should have a conversation with their staff about expectations around staff consuming alcohol before arriving for work. “We all want to get behind the All Blacks and enjoy the rugby, but if you’re driving after the game our advice is to not drink alcohol and if you drink, don’t drive,” he says.
Sun shines but Cherry Blossoms stay away Even with the cherry blossoms still tucked away, this year’s Cherry Blossom Festival remained an impressive display of Japanese culture. Chairperson of the Nelson Miyazu Sister City Association, Lyndal McMeeking, says there were more than 2000 at the festival, which was more than anticipated. The Nelson Cherry Blossom Festival was created to celebrate the Nelson-Miyazu sister city relationship and to observe the coming of the cherry blossoms, a traditional spring festival in Japan. The festival also raises awareness of the Japanese culture in Nelson, a city that over 100 Japanese families call home. The Nelson-Miyazu sister city relationship has been alive for 39 years, the second longest sister city relationship between a Japanese city and a New Zealand city. “One of the highlights was an extra long performance by the Raijin Taiko Drumming group. It was very well supported and people really enjoyed it, and as a result the Raijin group got 30 people signed up for a Taiko drummng workshop,” says Lyndal. Other attractions included plenty of Japanese food, demonstrations of both Kendo and Aikido and big brush calligraphy from Akiko Crowther.
