The news of the French booking follows a story, first reported by Nelson Weekly two months ago, that an operator for Australia House Events – a private business and not part of the Australian Government – is looking at setting up shop in Nelson to help service up to 5000 Australian rugby fans. If it goes ahead it will be the third such base for Australians, with one already set up in Auckland and Wellington. The city’s accommodation is already more
Excitement builds around re-enactment game as ‘Town’ team named It’s a rivalry 141 years in the making and Nelson College will have to be on top of their game to even the score. The re-enactment of the first rugby game played in New Zealand is the showpiece event of the Game On festival. The original game, played between Nelson College and “Town”, or Nelson Rugby Football Club, was played at the Bontanics in 1868. A re-enactment
match is being held at the same ground on September 20 and orgainsers are expecting international exposure for the game, which will be played in replica uniforms, with a replica ball and with similar rules to the first game. Yesterday Jack McNab, chair of Nelson Rugby Football Club, announced the 25 players who have been selected to play against Nelson College in the game.

Lynda says the Nelson businesses should be getting extremely excited about the influx. “We have hosted more than 70 journalists this year alone and we are expecting another 150 during the tournament, that is huge exposure for Nelson. Andrew Board Nelson’s best neighbours have been found for 2011 at the annual Good Neighbour Awards, held last Thursday night. Around 40 nominations were sent in for the awards, which recognise the best neighbours in Victory, Nelson city, Stoke and Tahunanui. Organiser Kim MacDonald says she is thrilled with the entries this year and says Nelson is lucky to have so many wonderful neighbours. “It’s just awesome, and the stories are really, really nice. I wish I lived next to some of these people,” she says. The winners were Cherie Johansson, of Victory; Eugene and Giusippina Harder, of Tahunanui; Ted Lines, of Nelson city and joint winners Graham Weir and Robyn Hollis, of Stoke. All of the winners will be profiled in Nelson Weekly over the coming weeks.
The community police officers of the four areas handed out the awards and Nelson City Councillor Rachel Reese earlier spoke of the importance of neighbours. “This is one of my favourite days of the year, I’m stunned at the wonderful things you people do. Family are the most important and after your family comes neighbours,” she says. The Good Neighbour Awards is organised by Neighbourhood Support and sponsored by Nelson Weekly. Winners were acknowledged for a range of good deeds, including putting out rubbish bins rain, hail or shine, hosting street parties, sharing fruit, vegetables and nuts from their garden and looking after neighbours who had recently had an operation. Hira School and the Ridgeway Action Group were also presented with special awards for being “great neighbours”. For the first Good Neighbour profile see page 9.

This Week Lisa (LJ) Utton and John van Gosliga bring up the rear of the City2Surf walk from Nelson to Tahunanui Beach and back. Photo: Sarah Delaney.
City2Surf walks up an appetite for charity Being new to town Lisa (LJ) Utton had heard organising outdoor activities during winter could be frought with danger, any hint of bad weather and don’t expect much of a crowd. But the sun gods were shining on her good deed, providing a spectacular day for the City2Surf funwalk for Nelson Hospice. More than 100 people turned up in wigs, colourful outfits and walking gear for the fundraiser. It started at the Vic Brew Bar on Trafalgar St and made its way to the Beach Cafe at Tahunanui Beach, and back. LJ, who works at Aboki, says she is rapt with the turn out and interest from Nelsonians. “I organ-
ised this because I wanted to build a stronger link with my community and at the same time do something for the Hospice. I was delighted with how it went, everyone had a really good time.” The walk raised around $500 for the charity and LJ says she is considering running it again next year. “It’s a great cause and this year’s response was great so I think the interest is there to carry this on.” Nelson Regional Hospice Trust project manger Hamish Kennedy says the money will be put to great use. “It was great for LJ to come to use with this idea. We like to be able to offer different events for the public to get behind and support.” Advertorial

Nelson Weekly spoke with Joseph when he was still missing half of his skull, he said at the time all he wanted to do was get back to school and back on the football field. Exactly one year to the day of his accident Joseph was holding the central defence for Nelson Intermediate in the final of the Winter Tournament for intermediate schools, at Saxton Field. His parents watched on with unmistakable pride, a far contrast to a year before when grief was the overriding emotion. “It was very exciting for all of us, for him to be out there representing his school and doing headers, which I still cringe at every time, was great,” says mum Jo. Joseph plays for FC Nelson Stars, a junior side. But it was representing his school that was a highlight for Joseph. He says the significance was not lost on him. “I thought about and after the game on the way home I sort of thought about it more.” Jo says his head has recovered Joseph Cotton, 13, in action for Nelson fully with no ill-effects. “It’s quite remarkable really and Intermediate on the anniversary of the it certainly hasn’t stunted his crash that almost took his life. PM’s flying visit thrills National fans Sunday wasn’t the first time Jill Truman had met John Key, not even the first prime minister she had met, but the thrill of meeting the country’s leader at the Tahunanui Domain was obvious. “It’s just a wonderful thrill. It’s all that I could have ever wanted, to be that close to John Key,” she beamed. John Key was in Nelson on Sunday to help launch local Member of Parliament Nick Smith’s re-election campaign. He was the main event at the picnic to encourage people to “PickNick”. Jill was one of the National Party faithful that turned up to support the prime minister and her local MP on the day. “I’ve been a supporter of the National party for over 50 years and I’m president of the National Party’s luncheon club. I think today has been a wonderful success. It’s been such a good day with a fabulous turn out.” The prime minister spoke for roughly 20 minutes about the Christchurch earthquake, Nick’s contribution to the National Party loyalist Jill Truman, of Nelson, gets up National Party, Rugby World Cup and close to Prime Minister John Key at the Tahunanui play- then spent time mingling with the several hundred people that turned out. ing fields on Sunday. Welcome sign gets final makeover Nelson’s welcome sign received yet another makeover on Saturday – its final one, says the mystery artist behind the redesign. The sign, on State Highway 6 near Atawhai, was first changed last month with zombie pirates on it, it was then refreshed later that month with the new slogan ‘Nelson: Live the Day, for tomorrow we die...’ featuring two eldery people. The sign got a much more cheerful upgrade this week though with the new slogan ‘Nelson: Live the Day, stay and play’. The sign also features the words ‘Vibrant Seaside City’ and the two characters are named ‘Aldo’ and ‘Ali’, the names of the city’s mayor and deputy mayor. The artist says the decision to redesign the sign before the Rugby World Cup was made several

• Riverside Pool is the one of the best fitness facilities in the country after it picked up the award for best site under 200m2 at the annual CLM awards last week. The awards, held at the Monaco Resort, judged the centre the best from the 34 facilities and 15 fitness centres around the North Island and top of the South Island. The centre’s reception and aqua aerobics coordinator Jo Perrott was also awarded staff member of the year.
• Some important businesses, institutions, community groups and people in Nelson are gearing up for the Nelson SPCA’s third annual Cupcake Day on Monday, August 29. SPCA Cupcake Day is based on the idea of an old fashioned bake sale, where SPCA supporters around the country are encouraged to bake cupcakes and sell them to friends, family and colleagues and send the donations to the SPCA. For a full listing of where the cupcakes will be available on the day visit www.nelsonspca.org.nz. • Three new brands have been announced by the Nelson Tasman Cycle Trails Trust, which newly elected chair David Bonnett says will greatly enhance promotional opportunities for the region’s cycle tourism. There are two distinct trail names: Tasman’s Great Taste Trail and the Dun Mountain Trail. The development group favoured the Heart Of Biking (Nelson Tasman New Zealand) as an overall brand. They believe it offers emotive as well as rational benefits linked with a strong sense of place and identity.
months ago and after approaching Nelson City Council with the idea. NCC said they weren’t sure who owned the sign and it would take some time to find out. So “Ro and his mates”, decided they would dispense a bit of charity and do the sign for free. In an email to Nelson Weekly, ‘Ro Guish’ says coming up with a slogan became a bit of fun. “It became a bit of a community competition, calling for people to send in their slogan ideas, a slogan which best represents the Nelson way of life. “With over 40 slogans submitted by locals, the stand out slogan was simply - ‘Nelson, live the day - ‘stay and play’. Lighthearted and friendly, hopefully giving the morale of the visitor a positive boost. Nelson is a fun place!”

The New Zealand Navy ship HMNZS Taupo visited for two days rest and re-supply, and fifteen large fishing vessel movements around the port improved the activity level of the port. • It was also an interesting week for the Harbour Master staff as we resume our presence on the water. I was asked to attend a Search and Rescue co-ordination conference in Auckland where I was pleased to learn the police, coastguard, and surf rescue all cooperate well to perform effectively and efficiently in this area. We are fortunate to have some very professional people involved in SAR in this region. • On Thursday I was advised a small yacht, the Carbine, had dragged its anchors and had become a hazard to other vessels. Parents, teachers and supporters of Nayland Primary School are set to do it again. And this year their show includes a cast of a pregnant nun, a gimp, a pirate and a wench. Nayland Primary School parents have been rehearsing all year for Sync or Swim – a fundraising cabaret-style show which promises a boat-load of laughs and fun. The show is the third in as many years and brings together a cast of parents and teachers, most of which have never starred in any form of theatre. This years show, set on a boat, starts this Saturday with further shows on Friday September 2 and Saturday September 3, however the final show has already sold out. Organiser Peta-Lee Buckley says the show will be a blast. “For a lot of the people in the show they will be getting pushed way out of their comfort zone but it’s very light hearted and lots of fun.” Money raised from the show will be going towards an indoor multi-purpose centre that the school has been fundraising for for several years. “The kids have their assembly outside at the moment so this new centre is much-needed.” For tickets or to find out more about the show, give the school a call on 547 7399.

Top neighbour finds what goes around comes around
Andrew Board Karma. It’s a word Wood resident Ted Lines should certainly believe in. Ted’s neighbours – grateful for the work he does in the neighbourhood and the countless times he has called on them and helped – nominated him to be Nelson city’s Good Neighbour of the Year. He went on to win the award, but not before suffering a heart attack at his home. With his wife out it was his neighbour Jude and a friend who came to his aid, seeing he was in some discomfort outside his home. They helped him to the doctors and by getting onto it quickly, it has meant a speedy recovery for Ted. It’s that sort of good neighbourly help that makes Majestic Way in the Wood live up to its name says Ted. “It’s a great neighbourhood, I keep an eye out for them all, but you just try and do what you can, help out when you can. I wonder around and make sure they are all ok.” Ted says he was “embarrassed” to be nominated and go up to accept the award, but admits getting the letter to tell him he was a finalist, while he was at home recovering from his attack, was nice. “They were all very crafty,
even my wife knew and she didn’t say anything so they were all very crafty,” he jokes. Ted’s neighbours say his efforts are “tireless”. “He will put out and bring in rubbish bins rain, hail or shine, maintains gardens on the street, including digging up and replanting one neighbour’s garden when she was recovering from an operation. He does us all proud,” said the neighbours on the nomination form for this year’s Good Neighbour Awards, which were held last Thursday night. Ted is also the cul de sac security guard, keeping an eye on anyone that comes in that he doesn’t know. He says being a good neighbour was something he learned as a child. “I grew up in a little village in England during the war and when all the blokes went away Mum made us go around to all the ladies and do all their chores, we used to do shopping for them. That’s the way we were brought up and it’s been like that since.” With the award in his hands he says he was “chuffed” to have it. “We all get on and all look out for each other and that’s what it’s about, that’s what makes it a great place to live.” Another Good Neighbour story will run TOP BLOKE: Nelson city’s Good Neighbour of the Year, Ted Lines, with his certificate on his in Nelson Weekly’s next issue. beloved Majestic Way. Nelson knitters help keep Moldova warm
The Tasman region might have some of the best trout fishing spots around, but don’t ask Nelson Trout Fishing Club president Ray Day where they are. While the Motueka River is a haven for trout fishing, a lot of the 60odd members have their own “secret” spots where they say they catch the biggest fish. But with the season ready to begin at the start of October, Ray is hoping to net more members. To join the club, phone secretary Bruce McLean on 548 0066. Photo: Phillip Rollo.

Nelson knitters have put their talents to good use, knitting 290 blankets to be sent to children in chilly Moldova, in Eastern Europe. The annual ‘Operation Cover Up’ gets knitters all over New Zealand making blankets, hats, scarves, jerseys, mittens and slippers to send to Moldova, one of Europe’s poorest countries. Nelson organiser Elaine Borger says blankets have been coming in from all over Nelson and this years tally is similar to last years. “It’s great to see them all out like this and to see that we are able to use our knitting for good.” The programme is run by Mission without Borders, an interdenominational organisation. Operation Cover Up was started in 2000 by Taupo woman Liz Clark, she heard that children are often very cold in Moldova, with minus 20 degree temperatures in the winter. She rallied around Taupo to get people to knit peggy square blankets for the children. The idea explodElaine Borger and Elisabeth VandenBerg with some of the blankets ed and last year 10,000 Nelsonians have knitted for children in Moldova. The blankets were blankets were sent to Molcounted and sent last week. Photo: Andrew Board. dova from New Zealand.

Driving instructor used to bumpy rides If you have your drivers licence, there’s a likely chance that it was thanks to Kevin Bannan. The driving instructor has been in the business for more than 20 years, ending up on the top of traffic islands, round a-bouts and his foot planted firmly on his dual control brake. While he may have had his fair share of bumpy rides, it’s all worth it, says Kevin, who enjoys the satisfaction of watching learner drivers turn into experienced and safe drivers. “It’s very rewarding. Getting your drivers licence can change your life,” he says. “Everyone’s got to do it when they feel they’re ready. A lot of young people are keen to do it and it certainly makes life a lot easier if you can drive.” The drivers licence test is changing in February
next year from 15 minutes to 45 minutes, covering more ground and situations, something Kevin says should have happened a long time ago. “The current test is way too simple, it doesn’t cover enough. It might have been good 20 years ago but the situations have changed, especially in Nelson, it’s growing, the traffic and intersections have changed.” Kevin says 15 hours of driving is the usual time it takes to get a novice driver up to the stage where he, or she, can drive, but the new test will reflect 120 hours of driving. Kevin’s tuition covers everything from driving lessons to defensive driving courses. “It’s like a different job every hour, you have a different person on a different stage of driving, it’s an interesting job.”

John & Julie Crone have returned to Nelson after 15 years in Wellington to establish Nelson Personal Financial Planning. They believe that there has never been more need to manage investments closely and to plan for retirement than now. Prospects of an ageing population putting pressure on superannuation, introduction of capital gains tax and potential means testing of entitlements are just some of the impacts likely to hit New Zealanders in coming years. At the same time savings are being eroded by interest rates lower than inflation, or even worse, have been lost in finance company deposits. John says “we aim to work closely with investors to help understand the risks involved. If a potential investment can’t be explained in simple, understandable terms it should be avoided. ” In recent times John was General Manager for listed property entity The National Property Trust and has worked as a fund manager since 1996. He completed the Graduate Diploma in Business Studies (Personal Financial Planning) in 2009, recognising then that more regulation of financial advisers was likely. John has also completed B.A. and B.Com degrees at Canterbury University majoring in Economics, Accounting and Operations Research. He is a registered financial adviser. April and Tony Cooke are the dynamic husband and wife team who moved to Nelson 18 months ago to be closer to family. April worked as an onsite massage therapist for corporate clients for four years in Wellington before deciding she needed a change. Interpersonal skills are a must in this line of business she says. Tony has an eye for detail, and as a qualified plasterer finds the technical skills needed for plastering work just as well with cleaning. “It’s a good feeling when a client leaves positive feedback for a job well done. It makes my day!” April and Tony offer a personal service when it comes to their customers. They do all the work themselves, and obtain security clearance through the Ministry of Justice every six months. And because everybody’s needs differ, The Dynamic Duo do their utmost to adapt and fit in with the needs of all their clients. There is no job too big or small for this Dynamic Duo energetic partnership they do it all – from cleaning windows to scrubbing walls. April and Tony listen to their clients wants and needs and love the satisfaction of seeing their work complete. So give them a call today and they’ll come to you. The Dynamic Duo Cleaning up this town! Having a home on wheels has never been so comfortable because just like designing a new house, with the help of Craig Ashton you can customize your own motor home or camper trailer. Craig and partner Brenda own Nelson Motor Homes Ltd and with more than 20 years experience building and designing motor homes and camper trailers, Craig is the perfect man to make your road-tripping dreams come true. He has experience in working with bus and motor home joinery, plumbing, electrical and design. Now he is currently designing and building new camper trailers, which can either be a fifth wheeler, cab over or a trailer for use as an extra room on your property. Nelson Motor Homes already have orders to build these trailers. They are light weight, structural and tailor-made to suit customers’ needs. Craig works with his customers to build their lifelong dream. The camper trailer is popular because of its garage/storage at the rear for your motorbike or small boat. Their workshop, on St Vincent St, is a one stop shop for all camper and caravan needs and they offer new builds, fibre-glassing, joinery paint and panel, electrical work, roadside maintenance, solar systems including fridge, heaters, lighting and sky dishes. So give Brenda or Craig a call on 548 4240 and find out how to get your dreams moving. Most people wouldn’t be too thrilled to have people walk all over their work. But Maurice and David of Elite Flooring count on it. For 25 years Maurice has been sanding and coating wooden floors over the top of the South Island and five years ago his son-in-law David joined him. The family business goes the extra mile to make sure your floor is sanded and coated to the highest possible standard. They offer good advice on how to best do the job, are tidy, professional and can even arrange vinyl and carpet laying. They offer free quotes and even give the choice of coatings. Their 99 percent dust-free service can be catered for residential and commercial buildings. Maurice and David both come from trade backgrounds and work hard to give you the best possible job. IN BRIEF VOLUNTEERS: Nominations for the SPARC volunteer awards close midnight today. This year you can nominate not just coaches, but also administrators, officials, referees, fundraisers or anyone that is a volunteer in sport (including through clubs, schools or events). Visit www.sparc.org.nz/volunteers to make your nominations. FOOTBALL: AMI Nelson Suburbs were always destined for second place in the final round of the Robbie’s Premier League, but went close to beating eventual winners Ferrymead Bays, a hat-trick to Wiremu Piercey handing the visitors a late victory. Gagame Feni scored a brace, giving Nayland College more enjoyment than anything. The star striker was a late return from injury and is currently leading the school boys at the national championship in Napier this week..

Cobras tame Tigers in rugby league final The Stoke Cobras have finished a perfect season, capping it off with the sweet taste of glory in the final of the Bin Inn Cup. It was a commanding performance from the minor premieres, taking the game 54-24 at the home of Tasman Rugby League, the Tahunanui Playing Fields, on Saturday. A dominant second half performance lead the way for the Cobras, after finding themselves tied up 20-20 early in the latter 40, and behind on the scoreboard
prior to that when outstanding Tahunanui Tigers playmaker Eliot Smith dotted down for the game’s first try. But it was Stoke’s ever-impressive Philip Asi that was to be the real hero on the day, scoring a hat-trick as the Cobras wriggled their way back in to the lead. Philip was joined on the scoresheet by Cobras’ Jamein Bristoe, James Vailanu, Freedom Walker, James Piukala and Hoani Tauwhare as they took control of the game with five tries to seal Tasman Rugby League’s holy grail.
JUNIOR RUGBY: The Mike 7’s junior rugby tournament is being held this Saturday at Greenmedows. More than 500 junior players aged 6 - 10 years will be participating at the annual seven-a-side tournament hosted by the Stoke Rugby Club. Captain Troy Wilson says he was stoked with the win. “Tahuna really took it to us, the first half especially, they were awesome so we really had to work hard. We have some big boys on our team and towards the end they were able to find some holes and we ran away with it in the end there.” A number of Stoke Cobras have been selected for the Tasman Titans squad in their match against the West Coast Chargers this weekend. The game kicks off at 2:30pm on Saturday at Tahunanui.

Nayland College aiming high at basketball nationals Twelve months after the school’s best ever performance at the New Zealand Secondary School Basketball Championship, the Nayland College Senior A side are confident they have the depth to go one better than their semi-final appearance last year. With only one departure from the side that reached the top four for the first time in the school’s history, in 2010, co-captain Zeb Lovell says “belief ” and an all round team game could top last year’s effort as they compete against the rest of New Zealand’s best in Palmerston North this week. “I think we have the potential to do very well,” says Zeb. “We just need to play with confidence. If everyone believes we can do it then that’s all it will take.” The side is flooded with New Zealand age-grade players including under-18 guard Scott Cameron, who along with Zeb filled the two Nelson Giants development spots, under-17 big
man Angus Riley, under-16 player Locky Campion, while a number of others have represented the country in Koru sides. Youngsters Mitchell Chandler and Toma Noguchi are members of the Nayland junior team that finished top at the South Island tournament recently. Zeb says the team’s style is different this year but it will again rely on every member of the squad. “It’s a whole team performance with us. We don’t rely on any one player. We can all score.” Fraser Boys’ High School, coached by Jeff Green, is again favourites alongside Westlake Boys’ High School, but the co-educational school from Stoke are in its best ever position to clinch basketball glory. “It’d just be absolutely amazing. To get that record last year was amazing and to beat it again would just be outstanding.”

Hockey players off to tough start at top tournament
Nelson College have waited a long time to be back in hockey’s top secondary school tournament and coach Jamie Brown is determined to be back again next year. Nelson has qualified for the Rankin Cup, which will see the country’s top hockey schools fight it out. Nelson last competed at the tournament in 1996 but Jamie says a five year plan the school set has paid off. “We’ve been working towards this and while it will be a very tough tournament we are confident.” The players have been training up to four times a week and a spot in the top 12 will mean a return to the tournament next year. Nelson lost its first game of the tournament 4-1 to The Nelson College first XI hockey team from top left; Jamie Brown (coach), Henry Westenra (captain), Ben Werner, Otago Boys High School on Monday and today plays Will Stace, Michael Thorburn, Cameron Preston, Bailey Thompson, Fraser Neill and Finn Huirrichsen. Nayland buzz past Mot High Nayland College A could be well pleased with their clash against Motueka High School on Saturday. Nayland have continued to build on their platform throughout the season and look to be peaking at the right time as they compete in the B Grade at the South Island Secondary School Tournament in Nelson this week. Both teams had ebbs and flows through the early part of the game, with Nayland in front 1513 at half time. Nayland moved up a gear in the third period – they had better flow through court and all but eliminated the unforced errors. Michaela Matenga was Nayland’s general at centre, she led her troops by example – linked through court and fed her shooters intelligently. Brianna Joyes was the preverbal “energiser bunny” at wing attack even though she was a little over zealous and was called for a number of contacts. Ashleigh Parkinson made an impact on
the wing when she was introduced at half time; she gained several deflections and used her knowledge as a shooter to put in some precision feeds. Shooters Deanna Hunter and Olivia Clarke presented well and rewarded their feeders with accuracy. Nayland had a wealth of possession when they converted 39 from 48 while Motueka was restricted to a miserly 25 from 28. Ashleigh Snape and Macaela Joyes shared the wing defence bib and were both quick to gather in the loose ball. Goal defence, Sara Reidie continued to impress – she hunted and was rewarded with several well timed intercepts, while goal keep Abbey Pestell was an effective partner who limited Motueka’s opportunities. Nayland’s coach, Michelle Andrew was quietly pleased with her charges - they played a solid four quarters, putting into practice what they had been working on and is now focussing on the South Island Tournament.

Winter tournament a huge success for schools

Nelson wins junior netball tourny The Nelson Under 13 team had extra baggage on their way home from Ashburton when they swept all before them to win the Mid Canterbury Under 13 Tournament. Coach, Kathryn Orange said she was thrilled with how her girls had developed during the season. They played as a team unit and with maturity beyond their years to defeat Canterbury, Mid Canterbury, North Canterbury, Marlborough, Selwyn and the top club team Hornby. Caitlin Delany and Merekara McGuinetty were a formidable defensive
duo, while captain Holly Young lead by example from wing defence and worked tirelessly through court. Poppy Restieaux displayed versatility and proved to be a pivotal link while Paige Woodhill and Megan Stack worked hard to provide quality ball to their shooters. Ariana Tekawa Wiremu and Ellie Gaging worked the offensive circle well, with Ariana finishing the tournament with a 78 per cent shooting average. Piki Boyles and Michaela Kerr both impressed off the bench.
More than 1000 intermediate-aged school children took to the sports fields of Saxton Field for two days of thrilling competition last week. Thirteen schools from around the region entered the annual winter tournament which featured all winter codes. While it’s known as the winter tournament, it was summery weather which greeted participants, and tournament co-ordinator Leslie Smith says that added to another top year. “It was absolutely superb,” she says. “The facilities are stunning. This is the second year we’ve had it at Saxton Field and everything ran like clock-work.” 1176 athletes were entered, up slightly from last year. Leslie says every school only had positive things to say about the tournament which pushes huge involvement for the region’s top young talents. “Just the opportunity it gives kids to compete against each other and because it’s held every year the kids get a chance to make contact with April Erskine of the Nelson Intermediate School girls players from other schools away hockey team in action at the winter tournament held from here and they re-connect with at Saxton Field last week. Season over for Stoke rugby as Marist wins to book spot in final Tahuna Super Liquor Stoke Reds season came to a grinding halt over the weekend, losing its division three semi final to a fired-up Marist at Tahunanui. Marist, led by a dominant pack, scored three tries in the first twenty minutes, setting up the win. Try as they might, Stoke could only manage two unconverted tries in response, one to Toby Harvey – who’s never-say-die, uncompromising style of rugby also earned him player of the day – the second to Mark Mitchell. When the backs, ably led by skipper Wayde Sinclair, managed to cut loose with some good possession they looked good, but the odd wrong decision, knock-on and dropped ball cost them dearly with one of Marist’s second half tries coming from an intercept and, with time running out, Stoke Reds just couldn’t drag the score-line back, losing 29-10. Stoke manager Tony Smith says Marist deserved the win. “Full credit to Marist they took the game by the scruff of the neck right from the start to earn them-
selves a place in next week’s final.” Marist will play Waimea Old Boys at Jubilee Park this Saturday for the title. Tony says his troops can hold their heads high. “It was a good season with some good hard fought footy along the way, I would like to say a big thanks to Carl at Tahuna Super Liquor for his sponsorship through the season which we are very grateful for, and to the club’s major sponsor, Mal at Nathan Gibson charges towards the Marist defence with Marc Ryan in support. We are expanding! Nelson and Waimea Weekly newspapers are rapidly growing and we need another reporter to help us cover our wonderful region. Here is what we are after: Someone who is above all else passionate, is not afraid to learn and someone who wants to be telling the stories of our region. You do not need to be qualified, but do need an exceptional attitude and have very good interpersonal skills. The job: Our new reporter will work between 20-30 hours a week and this can be a mixture of working from home and our offices in Nelson and Richmond. Your hours will need to be flexible and you will report to the paper’s editor. You will be expected to cover a wide range of stories and take photographs as well; we will provide training if needed. About us: Nelson and Waimea Weekly’s are the only locally owned newspapers in the region. We distribute to 30,000 homes in Nelson and Tasman. We provide a politically incorrect working environment, filled with hard working people who have heaps of fun. If this is the job you’ve been waiting for, email us right away at editorial@nelsonweekly.co.nz.
