Christmas dinners prove popular Swapping the Christmas lunch at home for one at a restaurant is proving a popular choice, with several big venues already sold out.

The Nelson Suburban Club is hosting Christmas lunch for the first time in a few years and has already “over-sold” with 170 bookings.

Club Waimea in Richmond has 175 bookings for its Christmas lunch and the an-

nual Mayors’ Christmas Dinner will serve another 174, which Nelson City Council says is on par with previous years.

Suburban Club manager, Rob Finlayson, says the uptake has been very pleasing, especially considering it’s the first time they’ve opened for a special Christmas lunch for a few years.

“It’s fantastic, I think we could have kept going but we’ve decided to keep it to man-

He says taking the hassle out of Christmas lunch at home is a popular reason for its success. “It’s a good price [$55] and it

means people can enjoy their lunch without having to clean up.”

Club Waimea manager John Hewison says it’s the third year they’ve run a Christmas lunch and he’s thrilled with the numbers they’re getting. “People like it because they don’t have to do the bloody dishes.”

The Mayors’ Christmas Dinner will be held at the Nelson College Dining Hall this year.

Kids can’t get enough of Santa Santa has been a busy man over the past few weeks, but he took time out from his schedule to delight children at the Broadgreen House Christmas Carols on Sunday. The jolly man paid a visit to the carols where the Nelson Bays Harmony Chorus and the Nelson

Brass Band performed.

Robin Hall, a Broadgreen House committee member, says she was happy with the crowd and the event. “We had a lot of people coming through the house to look at the Victorian Christmas display as well. It’s been lovely.”

Fisherman’s body found in Waimea Estuary A body was found at the mouth of the Waimea River on Sunday, a day after a fisherman went missing in the area.

The fisherman, Lian Thang Van, 35, of Nelson, was fishing with a net near the mouth of the Waimea River with friends, when it was reported that he got into difficulty about 4pm.

Golfers at the nearby Greenacres Golf Club raised the alarm.

That prompted a land and water

search that night, but they failed to find the man.

The search continued on Sunday and a body was found around lunchtime, very close to where the man was last seen.

Police, LandSAR volunteers, Coastguard and surf lifesavers were all involved in the search and police thanked their efforts.

The matter has been referred to the Coroner.

Kids win bikes for light display Grace Church was lit up this week, full of displays made by children as part of the Kids Christmas Lights competition.

Children were asked to construct a scene depicting what Christmas meant to them, on a board no larger than 50 centimetres squared. The creations also needed to incorporate lights so they could be displayed at night. 26 entries were received and were open to public viewing over three nights as part of Light Up Nelson.

The public voted on winners in two categories, under seven years and under 12 years.

Hundreds of presents donated for local kids The Salvation Army has received a great response from the community to their annual Christmas appeal for families in need throughout the region.

The Salvation Army collects donated Christmas presents every year and distributes them to over 740 disadvantaged families throughout Nelson, Richmond and Wakefield.

The families include Salvation Army community ministry clients, as well as people listed with various agencies such as Family Start, Koru Trust, Whakatu Marae, Refugee Services, Angel In My Street and Nelson Women’s Support.

Salvation Army Major, Jill Knight, says the presents are donated by the community and delivered to various dropoff points across Nelson and Richmond. The appeal started with the launch of the Wishing Tree at Kmart in Richmond and was followed by the Ulysses Toy Run and contributions from dozens of schools, community groups and businesses.

“It’s been an amazing response,” Jill says. “We have got around 950 presents so far and the team are busy wrapping them up.

“The quality of the presents has also been excellent. We are amazed at the number of new

Businessman caught selling drugs WATER RESTRICTIONS LIFTED: The rainfall over the last week has enabled Nelson City Council to lift the stage one water restrictions in all urban areas. Works and Infrastructure Committee chair, Eric Davy, says, “Water levels in the Maitai Dam have risen sufficiently for us to remove the restrictions on using sprinklers. However, I urge everyone to remember that water is a precious commodity and we should always use it wisely”.

CAR COMPANY WIN BIG: Nelson’s The Car Company won big at the national SsangYong and LDV dealer awards this month, winning three out of the five awards. After winning SsangYong Dealer of the year in 2013 owner Shane Drummond says the motivation levels were lifted to do better this year. “We really knuckled down and focused on striving for the SsangYong and LDV Service award in 2014.” The second award that The Car Company received was the LDV 2014 Dealer of the Year Award. The third award was the 10 Year SsangYong Service Award.

WOODBURNERS TO BE REVIEWED: Last week, Nelson City councillors voted to adopt the recommendations from the Woodburner Working Party. That means there will be another investigation into the effects of woodburners in the city and to see if the current restrictions could be relaxed in some places. Councillors also committed to consult with the public, something they didn’t do in the latest review, and having it start early. The review is likely to begin in February.

A 62 year old Richmond retailer was arrested for possession of drugs last week.

The arrest was part of a wider sting where two other people, believed to have distributed the drugs for the businessman, were also arrested.

Police say they executed a number of search warrants following months of investigative work.

“Information received from the public

that the man was supplying the drugs assisted police to make the arrest,” says Barbara Dunn, communications manager for Nelson police.

“He has been remanded on bail to appear in the Nelson District Court on 5 January.”

The business man was arrested and charged with possession for supply of illegal “legal highs”, and possession for

supply of morphine.

In a separate search warrant, a 54 year old Tapawera man was charged with cultivation and possession of cannabis for supply.

When police searched his property, a sophisticated indoor and outdoor cannabis-growing operation was found, along with significant numbers of cannabis plants and dried cannabis head.

Graduates celebrate success

Four hundred jovial students took over the main street of Nelson on Friday, celebrating their graduation.

The Nelson Marlborough Institute of Technology graduation was held at the Rutherford Hotel on Friday, before the students walked down Trafalgar St for the graduation parade.

This year the graduation was split into four ceremonies, the two on Friday featured 390 students. Others were held last month and in Blenheim. Lights brighten up Christmas

Each night this month Bronwyn Walker and her partner Dick Fleming finish their dinner, flick the switches and head outside to see hordes of people come up their driveway and walk around their section.

Like moths, they’re drawn to the light – the incredible light.

Bronwyn and Dick have once again entered the Light Up Nelson competition which sees homeowners don their houses in Christmas lights for the festive season.

The Tahunanui Drive home is one of the most popular homes in the competition and last year they took out the supreme award for the first time, after first entering in 2005.

This year the competition – run by radio station The Hits – will have two winners, one from the “country” and one from “town”.

The supreme winners will win $500 cash from Harcourts and a $150

Harvey Norman voucher.

There are also awards for people’s choice, best new entrant and a prize for a lucky voter.

Bronwyn says they first got into lighting up their house after her father handed down all his Christmas lights.

“We try to add to it every year, but sourcing the lights is hard.”

She says they spend about six weeks putting their display together, starting after they finish work for the day and only stopping for dinner. “We don’t add up the hours we spend on it, but it’s a lot.

But seeing the kids’ faces makes it worthwhile,” she says.

She says they turn off the lights between 11 and 12 each night and spend most of the night on their driveway welcoming people and “keeping an eye on it all”.

School fundraises for cat’s vet bills Simon Bloomberg

Pupils and staff at Hampden St School left for their summer holidays last Friday feeling a lot happier, knowing that one of the school’s most-liked members is on the road to recovery after having surgery last week.

Socks, the school cat, has been part of the furniture at Hampden St since she “just turned up at the school one day nine years ago”. But earlier this month one of the parents, vet Meg Irvine, noticed Socks was looking a bit thin and lethargic and an examination revealed she needed a tooth removed and medication for arthritis.

When Meg told principal, Don McLean, that the ageing Socks was ill and needed an operation and medication to get better, he knew there was only one option. “It was a no brainer.

She’s an old cat but all the staff and pupils wanted to help Socks get better, so Meg operated on her and put her on medicated food formula.

“Then all the kids started raising money to pay the vet bills. They held a coin trail and we got donations from parents and even former parents of the school.

“I was shopping in Noel Leemings one day and a former parent came up to me and gave me $20 for Socks. We’ve

raised around $480 so far and the bill was $550, so we are nearly all paid.”

Don says Meg, who is a director at Stoke Veterinary Clinic, also helped out with a “heavily discounted” fee for treating Socks.

Teacher Denise White, who is the unofficial owner of Socks, is especially delighted that Socks is feeling better.

She says the school wouldn’t be the same without Socks lounging around the “staffroom, classrooms or wherever there is a sunny spot”.

“She just showed up one day and started hanging around the school. Claire Doris and I put some food out and that was it. She started turning up every day and became a member of the school.”

Denise says she feeds Socks every morning during the school term with a little help from caretaker, Ray Adams, while neighbouring parents take over the feeding duties during school holidays.

Meg says Socks was a model patient and is “recovering very well from her dental procedure”.

“The new medication should make her arthritis feel much better too. We have enjoyed her company at Stoke Vets, but we’re very happy that she can go home to her loving and very large family at Hampden St School.”

Bashed cop speaks out: ‘I’m not angry’ Peter Buzzard never saw the punch coming.

The man appeared to have calmed down after police arrived and Peter, a senior constable with 40 years’ police experience, stood and waited for his partner to cross the street before he would have a quiet chat with the man.

The man – later identified as Matei Peti – wasn’t calm though, and he wasn’t planning on having a quiet chat. He had been assaulting a woman in broad daylight, near the Broads playing field on Vanguard St, before the police arrived and he wasn’t prepared to stop.

Suddenly, he leapt up and landed a crushing punch to the face of Peter. The blow was so forceful it fractured his jaw in three places, knocked in several teeth and left Peter unconscious on the ground.

His partner rushed to his rescue and pepper-sprayed Peti, before he ran off and was later arrested.

Peter was rushed to Nelson Hospital where he underwent emergency work to his teeth and had around 60 stitches put in his face.

In his 40 year policing career across New Zealand and Australia, it was the first time Peter had been the victim of such an attack.

night in hospital. What he found wasn’t what he expected. He found a man with not an ounce of anger or bitterness. He found a man who – considering the circumstances – was quite cheerful.

Steve’s concern gave way to relief that one of his men was ok.

For Peter’s wife Debby though, concern was consuming her. A nurse of several decades, Debby was at home and had just woken after her nightshift at Nelson Hospital when Peter’s policing partner arrived at the door to tell her what had happened.

“I just rushed to the hospital in what I was wearing. It was horrible, really hard to see him like that.”

As Peter spent the next few months recovering from the attack, the pressure went on Debby. She was now caring for her husband while still working full time, and the whole time fearful of what lay ahead.

“The weeks after the attack were really hard and I always worry about him now. I didn’t worry before the attack, unless he went out with the Armed Offenders Squad late at night,” says Debby.

Peter says the impact of the attack on his friends and family was immense and something that police underestimated at the time. All efforts were on Peter and making sure he was dealing with the attack.

But Debby was feeling the effects worse than Peter, and Steve says that has been a big learning curve with this incident.

“We’ve learnt a lot. Something like this affects more than just the officer because the families are the support networks for our officers, so something like this really impacts on them and that’s something we really need to look at in the future.”

Debby says she is angry that someone was able to come into their lives and cause such disruption. “It does make me angry.

Initially I was thinking ‘well, he doesn’t have a very big history so let’s give him a break’. But as time goes on, and the effects continue, it’s like, ‘hmmm, maybe he should do a little bit of time’.”

Peti, aged 23, was sentenced in October to 23 months in jail, but he has never apologised for the attack. Peter says he did receive plenty of support from the community after the incident, though. “We had letters and cards dropped off and plenty of people offering their support, which was

really nice. I even had letters from people I’d arrested in the past.”

Peter started back at work a few months after the attack but was only on light duties in the office.

He suffered headaches and fatigue for months after, and is still not 100 per cent. He holds no bitterness, though.

“Angry over the whole thing? No. Because that takes away from me being able to move forward. Anger lessens who you are as a person and what does it achieve? It impacts on Debby again and impacts on my work. It’s not to say I wasn’t upset with it but I’m not prepared to let it take away from my life.

“I’ve been in this town 27 years and this is a brilliant place to live and the people here are good people, there’s just a few rat bags and we mustn’t lose sight of that,” he says.

Steve says attacks on police officers are not tolerated and they never will be. “We’re the last frontier, the last line of defence for good people in our community.

We represent that, to have a crack at that and think you can get away with it, that doesn’t wash. We’ll always treat assaults of police with the response they deserve, it’s a disgusting thing to do to a New Zealand police officer.”

Former Nelson Intermediate and Nayland College student, Dean Paul, has come a long way since he left school and Nelson, in 1989.

In fact, right now the New Zealand army Lieutenant Colonel is 14,780 kilometres from Nelson and will be celebrating Christmas Day in one of the hottest and most hostile countries in the world.

Dean adds that their Christmas dinner in Juba won’t be anywhere near as nice as his family’s because the range and quality of food in South Sudan “is fairly limited”.

However, Dean says the sacrifices made by all 11,000 of the UNMISS military personnel are worthwhile, because they are achieving their mandate of consolidating peace and security and helping the government of the Republic of South Sudan to govern democratically.

“From my observations, I really think the local people are better off for having the UN here. The UN act as a real moderating influence on the various parties in the conflict - we can’t be everywhere, but by simply by having the UN here it makes life better for a lot of people.”

Suter upgrade to start in New Year Work on the $12 million upgrade of the Suter Art Gallery will begin in January.

The upgrade is expected to be finished before Christmas 2016, and the gallery will operate from the Mountain Design building on Halifax St while the project is taking place.

The official signing of the construction contract between the Bishop Suter Trust and the builders, Scott Construction, will take place today.

The upgrade will improve the existing historic gallery, see the construction of new gallery buildings, an upgrade

of the existing theatre, a new kitchen and café, landscaping, and the addition of heating, ventilation and air conditioning.

Money for the upgrade came from government grants, Nelson City Council funding and donations from

Editorial: It’s Christmas! Thank god We’re almost there.

If – like us here at Nelson Weekly – you’re flying into Christmas as a ball of furious stress and busyness, you’ll be delighted to know that it’s almost time to relax.

There is now just one full day between us and Christmas Day. And thank god – literally.

Christmas is a wonderful time of year but the weeks leading up to it can be its most stressful. Kids are finishing school, there are presents to buy, food to prepare and harsh deadlines at work. Everyone wants things finished before Christmas, whether you’re a builder, dress maker or lawyer.

I, for one, can’t wait for Christmas. We put out three papers in a one week span before Christmas – our usual paper, our holiday edition [which will be in your letterbox just before the New Year] and we work on our first edition for 2015, on January 13.

But I think the stress and strain of the weeks before Christmas makes the day itself even more special. You can spend the day with your family and friends knowing that you deserve your break and really enjoy it.

I like to think the stress before Christmas makes that sip of champagne or beer with my Christmas lunch that much sweeter.

Blacksticks, Tuesday, December 9: The Blacksticks played two test matches in Nelson against Canada on Tuesday, December 9 and Wednesday, December 10. Nelson Hockey’s development officer, Craig Brett, says the Blacksticks received the highest numbers of fans attending their games that they have had all season, with over 1600 the first night and around 900 for the second game. New Zealand Hockey was extremely happy with the numbers that came to watch and Nelson will hopefully host more matches next year, thanks to the hard work of all the volunteers involved.

Jack Frost, Tuesday, December 16: Four months after being born premature at just 23 weeks, baby Jack Frost is finally out of hospital.

Jack’s parents were thrilled to be able to take their baby home for the first time and just days before his actual due date, although he is still on oxygen.

The family left the hospital mid-afternoon on December 19 and arrived home to decorations, balloons and family. They are now looking forward to settling in and spending time with their son.

Grey Power, Tuesday, December 16: Nelson Grey Power’s Special General Meeting last Sunday was postponed and will be held later in the year. The meeting was organised for members to vote on whether their president, Neville Male, should continue in his role. The meeting was postponed because members required further legal advice and were advised to do more research on the issue. Neville has called the meeting “illegal” and “disgraceful”.

Nelson sisters Hayley, 11, and Hannah Gower, 9, with the 17 inches of hair they cut off to donate to Freedom wigs. The sisters say they were inspired to cut it after a friend of theirs from St Joseph's School needed a wig.

They weren't too worried about losing years of well-cared for hair.

"It's just hair, it'll grow back," says Hannah. Their mum Erin says she's proud of the girls for cutting their hair and admitted that it would be a lot easier to care for.

This image is thought to be of Edgar Allen Hammond as he was the only man listed on the Auckland War Memorial Museum Cenotaph Database under the name ‘Hammond’ who was a sergeant in the Canterbury Mounted Rifles. The man can be identified as a sergeant and a member of the Canterbury Mounted Rifles from the shoulder flashes and the bandolier that he is wearing. Hammond was born on October 7, 1894, in Richmond. On the Cenotaph database his next of kin is listed as Walter C. Hammond (father), Richmond, Nelson, New Zealand. Before enlisting to fight during World War One, Hammond worked as a farmer for his father in Richmond. During World War One, Hammond was a sergeant with the Canterbury Mounted Rifles. He embarked on April 17, 1915, from Wellington, New Zealand for Egypt. He survived the war and was discharged on September 9, 1919. Hammond went on to fight during World War Two which he also survived. Hammond died in Blenheim on March 12, 1970.

Falcons win national youth league The Nelson Marlborough Falcons are the ASB Youth League champions, after they defeated Team Wellington in Petone 5-1 and Waitakere United drew 2-2 with Auckland City in Sunday's final round.

Although the Falcons and Waitakere United shared first place going into Sunday's league-deciding round, Waitakere were the virtual leaders because of their superior goal differential. But the goal differential became academic when the Falcons cruised past Wellington and then Auckland City denied Waitakere a win and, effectively, the championship.

Falcons coach, Mark Johnston, says the win was a highlight of his three-year involvement with the team. It was also a fitting send off for three of the team's senior players, Coey Turipa, Harry TodSmith and Josh Sansom, who were all playing their final game for the Falcons.

However, Mark says they all had to wait "an eternity" before Falcons board member, Francis Miccio, informed them that they had won the championship.

"Francis was on the phone to his brother Aldo who was at the game in Auckland. Francis said there was only a minute to play but it was actually five minutes and even that seemed more like half an hour - then he came over with a smile on his face and we knew we'd won."

Mark says Sunday's performance was clinical with Sam Ayers putting his team up 1-0 after seven minutes.

"Our last four or five games were easily our best and we just continued that on Sunday," Mark says.

However, Mark admits the season wasn't all plain sailing. After making a great start and being five from five, the team "hit two serious road bumps" and it re-

quired some serious soul searching to get back on track.

"We didn't change a lot. We just had some very honest discussions and to their credit the players responded."

Mark says the team also benefited from "great support" from their supporters.

"I've been around football here for a long time and I've never seen anything like this. The support has been amazing and it's made a huge difference to the team."

The Nelson Marlborough Falcons finished the league on 27 points, two ahead of Waitakere United.

Canterbury United was third.

Nelson Touch sent 97 representative players to the South Island Inter-Provincial Touch Series held in Christchurch over the weekend. Seven teams, which included the Under-13 Girls, Boys, Mixed, Under-15 Girls and Boys and Under-17 Girls and Boys, played against teams from Canterbury, Marlborough, Southland and Otago, but unfortunately didn't win a title. Cricketers unbeaten at tournament

The Nelson Girls Cricket Under 15 Representative team remained unbeaten in their first ever representative tournament, held in Palmerston North last week.

The 12 team members played five games and won against Manawatu, Wairarapa, Hawkes Bay and Wellington and tied with the previous year’s winner, Taranaki.

The final was rained out and as a result, the girls shared the winning trophy with Taranaki.

Coach, Kate Stiven, said the girls hugely surpassed expectations.

“All members of the team came together as a whole with some outstanding performances. We knew we had talented girls but, as it was the first time we had played at representative level, we didn’t know how well they would perform against other provincial teams,” says Kate.

The girls batted extremely well throughout the tournament and were strong in defence and chasing down the total.

Well, Christmas is almost here!

That brings around lots of joy for all, with present opening, catchups with family and friends, mighty fine meals, and some much-needed time off from work and school.

It also gives many families the opportunity to have a go at fishing from land, wharf, kayak, dingy or boat.

This is a great time of year to cast a line out and see what you'll catch, and even if you don't bring in a keeper fish it is an awesome way to spend some relaxing time with the kids.

Recently, Saturday December 13, some of the Dawnbreaker Fishing Club Committee organised a Kids Fishing Evening out at the Appleby fishing ponds.

Approximately 25 children turned up hoping to catch a trout or salmon from the stocked ponds.

From those 17 caught and got to take home their own rod and reelhooked trout, with another two kids making a call to catch and release their fish.

Sounded like lots of fun for all and a big thank you to Jim and Christine Jobe from Jimmy’s Bait Company for organising a great evening.

What a great idea to give young ones the skills, joy and lasting memories of a New Zealand pastime that many just take for granted.

So, if you have some spare time, grab a rod and reel or a hand line, some bait or lures, even go and gather some mussels or pipis or other for bait first, and find a spot for a quick fish with the family.

Make the most our awesome coastlines and saltwater areas in our beautiful region.

Have a great Christmas and be safe out there doing it.
