“I do actually. It takes a bit of character to do something like that.”
Uke players come to the rescue FROM PAGE 1 after they were found liable for a 2009 fire that destroyed several properties. They were told they were liable for around $1.2 million in damages, an amount that would financially ruin them. But talks since have been positive and it appears they could reach a settlement for a lot less, which means Tracey and Steve could keep their land. Since the story was first reported by Nelson Weekly there has been an outpouring of support, with more than $10,000 donated via the website savetripletui. com. The latest offer of support
has also been a pleasant surprise for the couple with ukulele band the Ukes of Hazard offering to play a fundraising concert for free. The concert will be on August 9 at the Richmond Town Hall and band member Ron Kjestrup says they just wanted to help. “It seemed to us that, whatever the details, it seemed incredibly unjust, the position that they’re in. So we said if there’s anything we can do just let us know.” The tickets are $15 per person and money raised will go towards raising money to save the farm, called Triple Tui. They are available from Harvey World Travel Nelson and Richmond.

Nelson City Council has asked its staff to continue to work with central government to try and find a way to move him on, says Ali. “One of the things we really want to make clear to staff and to Nelson people is that we haven’t actually given up and we’re still trying to find a solution. We want to work with other agencies to find ways to make him move
on. We want to try and keep the dialogue going, we have to keep trying.” But Lewis says he won’t end up in jail because the system can’t imprison him for failing to pay fines and the council are in a “mess of their own making”. He says to resolve the issue they need to “solve the problem they’ve created”. “They’ve taken me to court three times in ten years and each time they have lost. I want a public apology, and compensation. They don’t have the gumption to stand up and say ‘hey, we’ve made a mistake’.” Lewis says he’s only in the

Families find rentals are hard to come by Phillip Rollo

There is a shortage of four bedroom rental properties on the market across the district which means some families have to make do with smaller homes. Summit Real Estate property manager Sam Burling says she has seven different families currently on the lookout for a four bedroom property in Richmond but there isn’t a single one available. “There’s just nothing around. They’re very hard to come by at a good price,” says Sam. “To have six or seven looking for a four bedroom place is crazy.” Sam lists a number of reasons why four bedroom houses are not available to rent; most have long term tenants, they are expensive, and they are generally more suited to the owner who will live in it with their family. When Caren Kroupa moved into a four bedroom house in Tahunanui last month, she thought her countless hours searching for a rental property online were over. But the mother of three is already back on the rental hunt, given 42 days notice to move

While the landlord is well within their rights to move back into the house, as long as they have given the minimum 42 days notice, Caren was left fuming, believing the owner was after a long term tenant and she did not know he had his other property on the market. “If I had known his place was on the market I wouldn’t have gone for this house and I think it’s unfair,” says the qualified early childhood teacher, who says she signed a fixed term contract.
“Having three kids that I’ve got to up and move again and find another bond, it’s quite stressful. The only reason I got it was because it was long term and suited my needs. I had been looking for six months.” Caren, who was previously living in Richmond in a smaller house, is worried that a lack of four bedroom rental properties on the market could leave her homeless once the 42 days are up. “The time is ticking.” Sam says the shortage of four bedroom rentals has been ongoing since the Christchurch earthquake and is even worse in winter because people don’t want to move.

Victory gym ready to rumble Andrew Board Editor hEAlTh boArD nominATionS: Nominations for District Health Board elections opened on Friday and close at noon on August 16. Nelson Marlborough District Health Board (NMDHB) elections are for seven positions, elected by residents of Marlborough, Nelson and Tasman. Following the election, the Minister of Health may appoint a further four members, making a total of 11 members of the board. cAblE bAY rD: Nelson City Council last week approved a $3.7 million fix for Cable Bay Rd. The road and numerous culverts were badly damaged by slips as a result of the December 2011 rainfall event. The project involves the fixing of 28 individual slips as well as stormwater control. It’s expected that work will start next month and take 21 months to complete.
finAnciAl rEgiSTEr propoSED: Nelson should follow the example of other councils requiring the mayor and elected councillors to disclose their financial interests in a compulsory register of interests says Nelson mayoral candidate Brian McGurk. Brian proposes that a register is based on a similar model used by MPs and Christchurch City Council. The register would be available on the council website.
andrew@nelsonweekly.co.nz Just a few months ago the idea of a boxing gym for kids in Victory was just a pipe-dream in Paul Hampton’s mind. This Friday it becomes a reality and the whirlwind few months in between still have the 40 year old’s head spinning. “I can’t believe it, I can’t believe we’re now so close. It’s exciting,” he says. The club’s new facility sits next to Harvey Norman on the busy St Vincent St, in a building owned by the Gibbons family. It has a “chill out” room in the front, changing rooms, toilets and showers for boys and girls in the middle of the building and at the back an expansive room with a boxing ring, punching bags, speed balls and plenty of room for skipping and other exercises. It’s a boxer’s paradise and “one of the best around”, says Paul. The gym was made possible thanks to the hugely successful Fight 4 Victory held in June. It attracted a full house, 26 locals willing to pull on the gloves and get in the ring to help raise $50,000 for the club. That money has been used to buy equipment, upgrade the building and meet other costs. Basically, it’s been used to transform the club from a bulging programme of 80 kids in a classroom to a proper boxing club with excellent facilities. Whakatu Boxing Club and Fighting Fit Boxing have also come on board and will

Photo: Andrew Board. operate out of the gym and Paul has a few volunteer trainers that will run the classes. He says the club’s focus remains strong though and believe it or not, it has very little to do with boxing. “We’re building self-esteem, we’re teaching kids about healthy choices like healthy food and exercise and we’re providing a safe place for kids to come after school and give them an opportunity to burn off energy.” The club is essentially free for kids, a nominal $5 annual fee is all that’s asked, so every kid has the opportunity to be a part of it. Classes for teenagers and adults will cost but Paul says the idea behind the club is to make a difference in the community. The gym will open after school five days a week with a mix of adult classes and elite

training for adults held on week nights. Paul says the success of the club has been down to the support it received for the Fight 4 Victory event. “That hasn’t been lost on me at all. The number of people that supported us was unreal, we basically had the whole town behind us. This is Nelson’s gym.” The official opening on Friday will bring together the fighters that took to the ring that night, supporters and even Dean Lonergan, of Duco Promotions, the country’s largest boxing promoter. Plans are already underway for the 2014 Fight 4 Victory. Paul says the club will also be having an open day on Friday for all kids who are interested in coming along and learning more about the gym, what it does and whether they’d be keen to be a part of it.

Cawthron’s rats grow as big as cats A dead rat at the Cawthron’s Aquaculture park at The Glen is the biggest staff there have ever trapped. Staff member Ellie Watts has just bought another 20 rat and stoat traps for the park after she received some funding from the Cawthron Trust. She says since they went in they’ve been catching more rats than ever but one found last week was also the biggest they’ve ever trapped. “When I saw it in there I thought ‘what is that’ and I couldn’t believe it was a rat.” The rat wasn’t weighed but Ellie says it was heavy and as big as a cat. The traps have also been catching stoats and feral cats.

List grows for council elections Your Community Newspaper
The list of those putting their name forward for a seat around the council table is growing just three months out from the local body elections. The majority of the sitting councillors have already stated they will contest their seats at the October election with only two definitley out of the race – deputy mayor Ali Boswijk and longstanding councillor and former deputy mayor Gail Collingwood. But the number of newcomers hoping to contest for a seat is growing with another four confirming their intentions last week. Women’s Refuge manager Trudi Brand has announced that she will stand, along with Gail Noonan and Jean Edwards. Several others, including Garin College student Mathew Buckingham have already annoucned their intention to stand. Mayor Aldo Miccio says the more

This term has been great we have had at least eight councillors not prepared to comprimise their values and views but prepared to work respectfully and collegial together for common good of Nelson. It would be great for Nelson to have 12 councillors next terms that can work collegially like this.” Nominations for the council opened on Friday July 19 and will close at 12 noon on Friday August 16.
More choice, more value If you’ve driven past Caltex Bishopdale and wondered what’s been going on, their transformation is now complete and things are well and truly back to normal. After a makeover and a few renovations over the past 12 months, they are now 100% back in business servicing local day to day fuel and convenience needs. The past year has been a whirlwind of improvements for the busy main road site, with updated underground storage facilities featuring the latest in state of the art equipment now complete. The entire store has been transformed into an On the Spot Express convenience store, a new carwash is up and running, and now Lotto has been added into the equation, transforming the business into a one stop shop says owner Kyle Lightfoot. ‘It’s been a very busy time for us but we are really excited to have all work now complete. The shop is now able to offer supermarket prices on popular brands, there will be a range of great new grocery items and we have bigger and better buying power like never before. All of which means more choice and more value for our customers. The addition of Lotto
is yet another reason for the local community to call in and see us, we are really proud of what we can now offer.” The new carwash arrived just a few short weeks ago and already customers are noticing a huge difference in the results says Kyle. “The new car wash has a better chemical application and technology than the last one, producing a far better result. It’s brand new, it’s reliable, and it is already busy with people loving the results.” To celebrate the new look fuel station, Caltex Bishopdale will offer half price car washes to every car tomorrow. Kyle says the aim is to get as many people through the carwash for half the price as possible. “We want to share this new product with the community and invite anyone driving past to call in, fuel up, grab their Big Wednesday ticket and grab a half price car wash.” As foundation AA Smartfuel partners, Caltex Bishopdale offer a 6 cent per litre discount (subject to standard terms and conditions), so call in and find out how you could start saving on fuel today. Earthquakes rock Nelson Your Community Newspaper
Three earthquakes that caused minor damage in Wellington and Marlborough were felt right across the Nelson-Tasman region over the weekend, and Civil Defence is urging residents to be prepared for an even bigger one. Nelson Tasman Civil Defence and Emergency Management Group says residents are being reminded to ensure their emergency kits and plans are up to
date, and also confirmed after shocks are set to continue. Nelson Tasman CDEM public information manager Angela Ricker says authorities have warned the shallow 6.5 quake, which struck off Seddon on Sunday will be followed by aftershocks. “GNS Science estimates that in the coming week there could be up to nine magnitude 5.0 or greater events, with an approximately 30
per cent probability of a magnitude 6.0 or greater,” she says. If you are inside during an earthquake Civil Defence says you should move no more than a few steps, drop, cover and hold. “Stay indoors until the shaking stops and you are sure it is safe to exit. In most buildings in New Zealand you are safer if you stay where you are until the shaking stops.”
If you are outdoors when the shaking starts you should move no more than a few steps away from buildings, trees, streetlights, and power lines, then drop, cover and hold. If you are driving, pull over to a clear location; stop and stay there with your seatbelt fastened until the shaking stops. Despite being felt throughout the Top of the South, there were no reports of damage in the Nelson region.
Grandma’s ring is found Sinead Ogilvie
A story about a local woman and a missing ring has come full circle, and the owner of the lost heirloom couldn’t be happier with the result. The very same day Lee-Anne Weenink featured in the Nelson Weekly appealing to the public to help her find her grandmother’s lost engagement ring, it was found. While helping out with set painting at the Nelson Musical Theatre, Lee-Ann took the ring off and placed it in her purse, but was unable to find it later on and had given up hope of finding it again. A member of the public, Albert Peterson, 89, found the ring after he spotted it glinting in some long
grass on North Rd, something that Lee-Anne says amazes her considering he is blind in one eye, and only walks short distances from his home at The Wood retirement village. “He doesn’t have a drivers licence, and he walked all the way down to the police station to hand it in.” Lee-Ann says she couldn’t believe her luck that the ring had been found and was relieved that she didn’t have to tell her family the ring had been lost. “I am still in shock that it was found, I keep thinking it can’t be real.” After meeting Albert, Lee-Ann learnt that he too has experienced losing something of sentimental value and says that made the
reunion with her ring even more special. “Albert’s wife passed away and her wedding and engagement ring were both stolen so he said he knew how I must be feeling. We had the most lovely meet up, lots of hugs and talked for ages. We will be keeping in touch for cups ofNelson tea.” This Week Your Community Newspaper

Reporter
reporter@nelsonweekly.co.nz The loss of her grandmother’s ring couldn’t be more devastating for LeeAnne Weenink, who has worn the family heirloom for 12 years straight without ever taking it off -- until one recent Sunday. While volunteering at Nelson Musical Theatre painting sets for their Peter Pan show, she took off the ring and placed it in her purse to avoid getting paint on it and hasn’t seen it since. Lee-Anne doesn’t believe it was stolen because both her iPhone and some cash in her purse were still there, so she thinks it must have dropped out of her purse either outside the theatre or dropping her child to Nelson Central School the next day. She says she felt pure “horror” when she realised it was missing, as it was the last link that her family has with her grandfather, who died when Lee-Anne was just seven years old. “My grandfather proposed to my grandmother with it, I wouldn’t get upset if it was just any ring, it’s not the value of the ring itself that’s upsetting, it’s how much it means to my family.” The loss of the ring comes as a double blow to Lee-Anne who says she specifically made a point of wearing it everywhere because the matching

I would be thrilled if someone who has found it handed it in.” Anyone who has seen, found or finds a 1940s Art Deco style ring with little diamonds inset on either side, in the area between Founders Park and Nelson Central School can either hand it in to the Cawthron Institute, or simply hand it in to the Nelson Police Station.

Musicians play to help mate
Nelson’s music scene has rallied around one of its own, a local musician who had most of his equipment stolen. Aaron Douglas thousands of dollars’ worth of gear stolen from his property last month and says it will cost him a fortune to replace. His story was reported by Nelson
Weekly and he says the support since has been great, culminating in a fundraising concert for him on Saturday night. Four bands and a DJ played at the Shark Club with the gold coin on the door going towards Aaron’s replacement costs. “I’ve had a lot of support which has been
good and a lot from people I don’t really know. They’ve obviously read it and just come up said ‘sorry’. So that’s good.” He says he hasn’t heard anything about where his gear may be but has already ordered some new equipment. The total raised won’t be known until later
in the week and while it’s not expected to come close to covers the cost of Aaron’s new equipment, he says the thought means a lot. “It was nice that people came out and supported me and it all helps. It’s nice to know people care.”
New manager for Mall
Belinda de Clercq has finally got her foot in the door of the region’s largest shopping centre and never one to do things by halves, she’s landed the top job. It’s been just four years since Belinda, the new Richmond Mall manager, emigrated to Nelson from South Africa and she says she’s had her eye on working at the Richmond Mall ever since. “I’ve wanted to be out here in the mall ever since I arrived. I love the mall, I love the region, and I love the vibrant people here in the centre of town. When I saw this opportunity [to be manager] I just went for it,” she says. Taking over the role from David Hill, who is now the centre manager for Palm Beach Plaza in Tauranga, Belinda’s experience comes in the form of 25-odd years in retail management, including a role as an operations manager for a large department store in SA and the running of Farmers in Nelson.
Belinda says she hopes to jump right into the job, and learn the ropes as she goes. “I’m going to find my feet first and learn to understand the role as it is very different. My main goal is to have no empty spaces in the mall, and already we’ve got new tenants in the pipeline. “Jean Jones is coming in October, we’ve got other potential retailers lined up that I can’t quite confirm yet and we’ve leased some of the top floor offices.” While she’ll be busy enough settling into her job, Belinda says she is excited to get into the lead up to Christmas, busy school holiday promotions and the mall’s birthday celebrations which will be held in October. While her retail management work history landed her the role, Belinda says she is looking forward to the unfamiliar parts of the job the most. “One of the most exciting parts for me is to be exposed to the marketing side of things Richmond local Belinda de Clercq is excited to take on the role of Richmond Mall and liaising with the tenants.” manager. Tuesday June 18 The doors will open to Paula’s Plate today, an event much anticipated by Nelson locals who have been waiting to sample Stoke mum and MasterChef runner up Paula SaengthianNgam’s cooking. The cafe will offer a range of cabinet food and coffee, and will be open between 8am and 4pm. Tuesday June 11 A local family of 12 enjoyed their dinner on the house at Cafe Olive two weeks ago, after winning a competition for the region’s largest family, which the Nelson Weekly was inundated with entries for. First prize went to the Curry family and Cafe Olive owner and competition organiser Hakan Aslankilinc says he was extremely happy to see them enjoying a meal out together. Tuesday May 21 After featuring in a Nelson Weekly article highlighting their fundraising efforts, Waimea College students alongside four local youth groups have managed to raise an impressive $4948 during the 40 Hour Famine, all of which will go towards aiding people in need in Bougainville, Papua New Guniea. Tuesday April 2 Some much talked about permanent outdoor seating will arrive tomorrow at the Sands Fish & Chip Shop in Tahunanui. After appearing in the Nelson Weekly, the owners won their fight against the Nelson City Council and no longer have to pay a fee of $2000 to have a table outside their premises. The table, sourced locally from Upper Moutere artisan Peg Leg Woodwork, is polished macrocarpa, engraved with the shop name, and will comfortably seat a family.

New head for teachers college For the first time in its 15 year history Nelson’s teachers college has a new programme’s coordinator, with experienced educationalist Colin Tarr settling into the role. Colin has come to Nelson from Wellington and says he’s excited and thrilled to be in the city and carry on the traditions of producing top teachers for our region’s schools. “This programme was asked for by the principals and they have certainly supported it over time,” he says. There are currently 35 first and second year student teachers studying through University of Canterbury’s Nelson programme for a three year degree and a further intake is being recruited for

Youth MP's two days in Parliament
Nelson Cat Show secretary Rose Boulton prepares one of her grandchild's felines for the 39th annual show, which is being held at the Hope Hall this Sunday. The show, which will feature more than 130 cats and four international judges, runs between 10:30am and 4:30pm. It is open to the public and Rose says it will be great for people who love cats. Nelson’s youth MP Patrick Savill says spending two days in the capital has given him greater respect for members of parliament, who he says do actually work together well. “Before I thought politics was all really personal,” says the Nayland College student. “But everybody works as a team. I was really impressed.” Patrick was Nelson’s representative in the youth parliament last week, which only happens every three years. Students representing 121 MPs are selected to attend the two day youth parliament and as Nick Smith’s pick, Patrick says he learnt a lot. “I learnt how the democratic system in New Zealand really works. You learn about it in school but not the details. I think I really learnt that politicians are real people, they actually care about everything. MPs would come down when we were having dinner and just talk to us.” Patrick was also able to chair a theoretical select committee meeting, vote on a bill in the house and attend a press conference the day Nick announced an

Nelson's youth MP Patrick Savill with Nelson MP Nick Smith. Patrick says the red tie was a "foux pas". application to build a tunnel in the Milford Sound had been declined. “That was really impressive because I take journalism [as a subject at school] so it was a really hands on experience.” Nick was involved in establishing the youth parliament more than two decades ago and says he had a lot of applications from Nelson students keen to be involved. “I received some outstanding applications and
making a final decision wasn’t easy but Patrick demonstrated real persistence and enthusiasm which I admired.” Patrick says a career in politics could be on the cards but he would need to get some life experience first. “But I think it’s a possibility that I could become a politician because it’s really interesting and although the parties are vying, everybody is there to make the country better.”

Kids art to help build new classroom Home fires

In Time Trust member Akky Leurink with a photograph showing the cramped conditions at the Nepalese school. In the background are pieces of art drawn by the school’s students that will be exhibited this month. Photo: Andrew Board. Akky says visiting the school has had a huge impact on her. She ran an art competition at the school during her time there and selected the top 34 as winners. “While I was there I thought it would be good to show these to people in Nelson and try to raise some money.” It’s these 34 artworks that will be exhibited at NMIT from this Thursday, July 25, until August 2. Also at the exhibition will be photos
of the school and village, taken by the Dalai Lama’s official photographer Cally Stockdale, which will be for sale. Akky says she’s looking forward to the opening at the G Space Gallery at 7pm on Thursday where she will also speak and show a slideshow of her own personal photos. She is encouraging anyone interested to come for a look. For more information on the trust visit www.intimetrust.org.
Having a proper fire in your new home may not be a thing of the past if noises coming from the Nelson City Council are accurate. The council says it’s “awaiting with interest” the outcome of new burner technology that Environment Canterbury (Ecan) is investigating for Christchurch. Recent changes to Canterbury’s Air Plan allows ultra-low emitting woodburners in new homes within Christchurch. In Nelson, if you’re building a new house or if you don’t have an existing fire, you can install an ultra-low emission pellet burner but not a normal woodburner. Pellet burners burn small compressed sawdust pellets. Because the fuel is of a regular size and moisture content, and pellets are fed into the fire by an electrically driven auger, they burn much more efficiently than other woodburners. Nelson mayor Aldo Miccio says the council will be following their progress closely. “We’re keen to learn from our neighbours. We’ll have a genuine look at how well this new generation technology goes for them and will consider bringing what they learn back to our own council for review.” Any change would not be in time for this winter though, says Aldo.

A Nelson trust aiming to build a new school in a rural Nepalese village is hosting an art exhibition of work produced by the very kids they’re trying to help. Nelson’s Akky Leurink was planning to visit Nepal last year on a vacation when she was pointed in the direction of Jumla, a village of 10,000 at the foot of the Himalayas in north-western part of the country, by fellow Nelsonian and In Time Trust founder Cynthia McConville. There the two of them met the students of the school and Akky says she was touched by the tough conditions the students – many of them descendants of Tibetan exiles – faced. “The conditions are beyond the imagination, it’s so bad. These kids need a new school. Now they are in cramped, dark, filthy, windy classrooms.” She says the school is one of only three in Nepal that still teaches Tibetan language, culture and history. The principal of the 190-student Kailash Bodhi School is Tashi Dhondup, who lived in Nelson for three years and over that time struck a friendship with Cynthia before returning to his homeland to make a difference. The trust has already bought the land for the new school building and is now trying the raise the $100,000 needed to build on it. In the past the trust has donated a library, scholarships, a science lab and musical instruments.

Nelson dump remains closed Nelson’s household rubbish is being dumped on Richmond, but despite a minor inconvenience caused by the temporary closure of the Pascoe St Transfer Station, the situation is no big deal says utilities network engineer for the Tasman District Council David Stephenson. While Nelson’s tip has been closed for business pending necessary maintenance to upgrade its gantry crane, the Richmond Resource Recovery Centre is coping well
with the increased demand says David and the situation hasn’t caused any disturbance to operations. “Staff have been pretty busy, but there have been no problems at this stage. We’ve been busier in the weekends, but the site manages large commercial quantities and this is the normally quiet time of the year.” While household rubbish had increased by 150 per cent, domestic customers only ever contributed to around 20 per
cent of rubbish intake. And regardless of increased volumes, a centre refurbishment 18 months ago meant the site was now able to cope with increased use says David. “The site was improved to accommodate for planned growth, so it’s gone well.” Angela Ricker, community relations manager for the Nelson City Council, says the closure of the Pascoe St site was well advertised and there had been very few instances of people turning up with
rubbish since the closure. “We chose this time of year to undertake the necessary maintenance work on the crane because it’s when we receive the least amount of household rubbish and green waste at the Transfer Station. We thank people for their patience and understanding.” There is no set date for the reopening of the Pascoe St Transfer Station, recycling is still being accepted and the Recycling Sale shop is still open.

Nelson College students James Newport and Chris McLeod contest a game of speedball during the secondary school paintball championship held at Paintball Nelson Appleby on Friday. Waimea College were the winning school on the day beating Nelson and third place Motueka High School across a range of different disciplines and games. The competition has been running for just three years now after some club members wanted the opportunity to represent their school, says Paintball Nelson Appleby co-owner Wayne Stockdale. “These are guys that originated from the club who then wanted to do it school versus school.” Photo: Phillip Rollo.

Should the men who saved Ali and Phil Fa’avae be offically recognised? We all want to be heroes and probably think "what would I do in the same situation?" These men performed a very heroic act without hesitating or thinking about their own safety first. I think these men should be recognised for their bravery. Wendy Marr. Without a doubt they should. Many people would not know
what to do, these people did not hesitate to put themselves in harms way to help a complete stranger. Total respect for them. Kerry Schaab. Yes, they saved two people and risked their lives in the process . What they did was amazing they should be proud of themselves and everyone else should be proud of them too. Sarah-Rose Lily England.

The Harbour Master’s
diary
• The Port has been a very busy place over the last few weeks. Fortunately for me I was on leave for most of it. I thought I would share an experience whilst flying from Wellington to Nelson. What has that got to do with water safety? Well I was fortunate enough to sit beside an individual from Nelson who does a lot of his boating in Golden Bay. We started to talk about weather and tell- tale signs of when to pack up and run and I was able to glean some good tips. Did you know that if you are more than 10 minutes from your destination over there you should start heading home as soon as the first whisper of a southerly comes in? No different to Port Nelson really. • A short, steep nasty sea can develop very quickly which is in the first instance uncomfortable, in the second frightening and in the third dangerous. My new boat friend was also able to advise me on some of the things he does with his young family. We concluded that it is absolutely essential to ensure someone else on the boat knows how to start the engine, drive the boat back to something in the water and then stop the engine. • No matter how young they are. A good way to teach this is to show the young student, “this is what to do if Dad fell out”, allow the young student to do it, and thirdly throw a floatation device or fender in the water and then step away from the controls and say “you have to do it now, let’s pretend that’s me in the water”. It is not such a good idea apparently to jump in the water yourself. • My friend also had a great tip in that you are caught out, if you have the boat cover with you, use it to deflect the splashes and prevent water getting into your boat. Simply put it firmly in place. Remember stability is of paramount importance so keep the water out of the boat and ensure your passengers don’t move about. Have fun boating, wear your life jacket, always

Robin and Meryl Jordan are excited to offer mobility solutions for people young and old throughout the Nelson Tasman district. Local mobility expert Robin Jordan has been helping locals maintain their independence for more than 30 years from his Queen St business. Now, due to growing demand, Robin has opened a brand new store just one door down from his existing premises, enabling him to tick all the boxes when it comes to getting people from A to B. While FAV Mobile Solutions has been meeting the needs of local customers through a range of mobility scooters sales, service and hire, Robin has been wanting to expand his business further for some time and is excited to announce his new venture, Mobility 4 You, which will also supply a wide selection of mobility solutions for children. From car seats to walkers, from new born babies to 80 year olds, everything you and your family need to keep moving can now be found at a one stop shop. All mobility scooter servicing will continue to be carried out by the same team at the FAV Mobile Solutions site, alongside car audio installation, while all mobility products including scooters, will be on display in the new store just one door down, leaving more room for the workshop team to service customer products. The 100m² store will better showcase the top of the range scooters, car seats and other mobility stock on hand, with plenty of room for customers to browse the collection. While Robin is excited to open the doors to his brand new store, he isn’t going it alone with his wife Meryl jumping at the chance to join him in the shop. Having a keen interest in health and safety means Meryl is looking forward to learning

everything there is to know about mobility options for all, young, disabled or elderly. “It is exciting, I’m looking forward to learning about car seats, pushchairs and the rest, while providing people with a great service.” Robin says after being in the business of mobility scooters for so long, it was a natural progression for him to expand into a more comprehensive range of mobility products for adults and children. “It’s something that I think Richmond is lacking in. There needed to be a specialist store that people could visit and know they were getting expert advice on their child restraint or other child mobility product.” After doing some extensive research, Robin has managed to secure some exclusive brands to stock in store which will be in ready supply alongside well known, tried and trusted names. He says the result is a product range that will meet the needs of every family, whether they have just had their first child or have a growing family in need of mobility solutions. “We have managed to source a great selection of brands and price points, with the aim that every family can access an affordable, high quality car seat, booster or push chair, or any other product along those lines.” Capsules, booster seats, car seats and more will now be in store alongside mobility scooters, chair lifts and walkers. Paul Hedwig and James Simpson are taking aim at the World English Sporting Championship in Canada at the end of the month. The pair will be competing at their second world championship, after the same competition was held in New Zealand three years ago. Paul and James, who are members of the Nelson Waimea Gun Club, didn’t need to qualify for the world championship, but they’re still backing themselves to do well. “You pay your money and take your chance,” says Paul, who will be in the veteran class. “There is no New Zealand team going which is a shame but James and I made the commitment that we want to get better at what we’re doing but you always go to win.” For James the task is simple: “I’m going to win. Seriously, for my grade I’m in for it. I’m winning that.” English sporting clays is the most popular form of clay shooting in the world. Clay targets are presented to the shooter in ways that mirror the flight pattern of game birds. The shooting course is laid out at stations. At each one, clays are thrown in pairs, either simulta-

The more you see the better you’ll get at it.” The preparation for the trip has involved shooting about 500 targets a week in the lead

up but James admits most international shooters will clock up double the amount of training that the Kiwis do. “What we do in a year they’d do in six months. The English are shooting 10,000-15,000 targets a year, we’d be struggling to get 1000 in competition,” says James. Because the pair had only just started shooting competitively at the time of the last world championships, they will enter in the 2013 tournament with a lot more experience under their belts. “I’ve learnt a lot since then and I’m hoping I’ve improved by at least 50 per cent. This will be a good indication anyway. I was dead basic when I started and now I feel like I can hit my grade.”

A couple of little ditties for you to remember: • “If you can’t get your washing dry, DON’T prune your roses”. This is as true as true. A nice clean cut is a sitting duck for any bad diseases that might be lurking about. So. When should you prune your roses? The answer is… let the rose tell you. If you see some nice fat buds on the canes then this is the time to make a start. Make the cut above a bud that is pointing in the direction that you want the cane to grow. Do this all around the plant for a nice rounded shape. Cut away any spindly canes especially any in the centre of the bush so that good air circulation can take place. And don’t be afraid! Remember Rod Stewart’s song “The First Cut Is the Deepest”. Yes, the first cut is the hardest to make, but once you have made a start you will be away laughing. Trust me, I know what I am saying! • “First it sleeps. Second it creeps. Third it leaps”. What this means is that autumn and winter is the BEST time to plant. I know how exciting it is when you find a plant smothered in blooms. You must have it! But consider the plant. There it is, sitting in its cosy little pot, minding its own business and flowering away happily. Then! One day, it is scooped off the shelf, popped into a bag, then a car, and most likely set to sit at a back door for maybe a day or two. Or, [horror of horrors] even more days. Then it is removed from the friendly pot, placed in an alien garden situation, hopefully given a drink of water and left to carry on
blooming profusely. It’s a big ask! But if that same plant had been planted in autumn or winter, it would have the opportunity to do the sleep, creep, leap routine with much less stress. How are you to know what to plant? You read! Go to the Library get out books be it about annuals, perennials, ornamental shrubs, trees, whatever. Spend the winter evenings reading. And lo, in no time at all, you will be hooked! The other thing to do is ask questions. After all, that is what garden centre staff are there for! • Did you get your seed garlic in on the shortest day? Bet you didn’t. I know because Friday was the shortest day and it rained cats and dogs on the following weekend. But there is still a bit of time, if you can get it in by the end of the month while it is still cold. About September a dressing of all-purpose fertiliser [garlic loves nitrogen] is a good idea. Later when the dry begins a good dose of water is good. You have to make a common sense judgement when to water. Telling you what time to water is pointless nowadays with weather patterns being what they are. This information comes from our son Graham, who has cultivated many acres of garlic in his time. • The word is out that it is time to prune hydrangeas. I don’t agree. When I fronted up to mine they looked so vulnerable I couldn’t do the task. Wait till early August. Well that’s it from me. Catch you later, Jill.

SPORT Wanderers, Waimea in rugby final Your Community Newspaper
For the first time in more than a decade the champions of Nelson club rugby will be a "country" team, with Waimea Old Boys and Wanderers to contest the final this Saturday. Waimea last won the top competition in 2002 and Wanderers in the 1950s and the bitter rivals will both relish the chance to break the drought against each other. Star & Garter Waimea cruised through to the final with a 33-10 semi-final win over Kahurangi at Jubilee Park while Taylor's Contracting Wanderers battled to overcome the defending champion Nelson side in the other semi-final in Brightwater, eventually winning 26-18. The semi-final results mean for the first time in a long time, a Nelson city-based
team won't contest the final with Nelson, Marist and Stoke dominating the competition over the past decade. Waimea won the last game between the two sides 45-22 but Wanderers won the two other encounters between clubs this season. The final will be played at Trafalgar Park with a 3pm kick off. Waimea club president Duane Whiting says it will be a huge day for his club. "This is what we've worked towards and the boys have been playing well. The club has been waiting a long time for this day so it will be a big one and we're excited." It will be the second final appearance for Wanderers this season after it lost the Tasman Trophy final to Nelson last month, an experience it won't want to feel again, especially to Waimea.
SPORTS TRUST: Sports Nelson Tasman Trust is celebrating its first birthday and has another $15,000 to giveaway. Applications for the funding need to be submitted by 1 Sept. Football title up in the air A dramatic week of local football means the result of the region’s top league will come down to the final game of the season with just two teams now in the race to be crowned champions. This time last week Richmond had a three point lead in the Nelson Bays Football first division but FC Nelson and Nelson College were breathing down their necks and each held two games in hand, giving them a clear advantage. By Thursday the trophy was destined for Jubilee Park after both FC Nelson and Nelson College lost mid-week games to Suburbs and Wakefield, respectively. But by Saturday afternoon it all changed again
with Nelson College giving Richmond a 6-1 hiding and FC Nelson winning, swinging momentum back to the city teams. Richmond and FC Nelson both sit on 26 points but FC Nelson has a much better goal difference and College sit one point behind them. Now it all comes down to Saturday, where FC Nelson and Nelson College are only two teams playing, due to a postponed game earlier in the season. The winner will win the league, if it’s a draw FC Nelson will claim the cup. Follow all that? Either way, this Saturday’s game at Broads will decide the league and will be a cracker to watch. Kick-off is at 3pm.

It appears that Mika Vukona is an optimist. Despite leaving for China without the likes of Kirk Penney, Steven Adams, Lindsay Tait, Isaac Fotu, Leon Henry, Alex Pledger and Rob Loe alongside him, the Tall Blacks captain still believes it is an exciting time for New Zealand basketball. The Tall Blacks, who are coached by former Giants coach Nenad Vucinic, will face two Chinese club sides this week before taking on Cameroon, a Canada selection and another Chinese side in a fourteam tournament – all in preparation for the home-and-away Oceania championship against Australia, starting on August 14 in Auckland. When questioned about the current squad, which includes four newcomers, one of which is Nelson Giants guard Brook Ruscoe, the first noun Mika replies with is "excitement".
Nelson Giant and Tall Black captain Mika Vukona in action for the Giants this season. Photo: Phillip Rollo. "Yeah it's definitely excitement. Look obviously we've lost four or five experienced players but it's a great way for the new guys to jump into the deep end and find out whether they can play, and I think they can," says the New Zealand Breakers power forward. With one player in the squad just 16 years old and a few more still at secondary school, it's fair to say the Tall Blacks will
be calling on the experience of Mika, who has gone without a true break from basketball since October last year. And that is something he is more than happy to help out with. "I think it's a good situation because guys are learning off you, you're learning off them. The majority of this team are pretty enthusiastic and everybody is giving it 100 per cent." While beating Australia next month will be the side's main focus, Mika says the trip to China is vital to get the youngsters up to speed with international basketball. "We just want to get these guys experience, let them know this how you play international basketball and get the offense sorted so by the time we come to play Australia we'll know what we're doing." A third Giant, Josh Bloxham, was expected to be on the plane to China on Sunday but injured an ankle during a warm up game against the Philippines. He is now in doubt for the Australian series.
Refs clock up 100 senior games Andrew Board Nelson’s two most experienced rugby referees have been acknowledged for passing a 100 game milestone. Hadley Peterson and Paul Gurr were both presented with a blazer from the Nelson Bays Referees Association on Saturday for controlling 100 division one club rugby games. Hadley says he is “hugely proud” of the blazer and to be recognised for his efforts. He started refereeing in 2001 as a 20 year old and says he still remembers his first game fondly. “It was Waimea Old Boys against Huia. I was nervous as buggery. Mark Milne was playing but he only lasted 70 minutes, he got a bit cheeky and got sin binned,” he laughs. Hadley passed his 100 game milestone early last year but was awarded the blazer after he controlled the Waimea Old Boys versus Kahurangi semifinal on Saturday. Paul was presented with his blazer after the Wanderers versus Nelson semi-final, which was also his 100th game. He

Photo: Andrew Board. also started in 2001 and says he played and coached senior rugby before moving into refereeing. “It’s a good way to stay involved and you can’t get a better seat for a game than refereeing it. You feel the hits but you don’t get hit, it’s great. I love the banter with the players and coaches and it’s a good way to keep fit.” He also remembers his first senior game and first final
fondly but says his 100th would be up there. “I don’t think I’ve had so much fun on a rugby field for a long time. I was just pumped, it was a great day. The teams tried to play good footy, there was a great atmosphere and I just really enjoyed it.” It may be some time before the next blazer is handed out with the next most experienced referees sitting on about 40 games.

Mixed success for netballers in Christchurch was a valuable link through court, wearing both the C and WA bib. Tali Uia really stood up as she averaged 90% at goal shoot. Nelson College 9A finished 24th. After an administration glitch Nelson Girls 10A competed in the Combined Grade and acquitted themselves well. The 10A team were joined by 9B players Libby Dowse and Sophie Anderson – McEwen who handled the step up with aplomb. Coach, Ricki – Lee Gardiner – Amohia was in the fortunate position to give all her players an even amount of court time. Player of the tournament without a doubt was Lilli Wilkinson who absolutely shone at wing defence. Lilli’s turnover rate was astonishing and she did a power of work on the outside of the circle. She applied the pressure which resulted in a number of held ball calls. Captain, Abbey Munro led by example and she excelled in the mid court as well as shooting. Abbey was a key play maker
Nelson was well represented at the South Island Secondary Schools Junior Development Tournament held in Christchurch last week. Waimea College 9A had an impressive tournament where they finished third, while the 10A team finished eighth. Garin College finished 11th in the Combined grade (with a mixture of year 9 and year 10 players). Waimea 9A players Lauryn Davenhill and Lauryn Hippolite were identified as talented players along with Waimea 10A Michaela Kerr after some outstanding play. Nelson College for Girls 9A, with Sharlene Lowe at the helm had a shaky start however improved nicely to record wins over Geraldine High School 33-20, St Kevin’s College 39-18 and Lincoln High School 28-23. Tuihana Kinita came in for praise from her coach as she toiled solidly throughout in the defensive circle. Tuihana was keen to hunt and rebounded strongly to deny the second opportunity. between Prices Pharmacy A and Nelson College for Girls A which is set down for 3pm. The winner will face top seed Jacks OPD which will be a tough ask. Stoke NBS will be looking to narrow the gap when it meets Richmond Robbie’s Bar & Bistro. Stoke took the game in the first round against a depleted Richmond. However Richmond had their backs against the wall and were so desperate for the win to avoid relegation the non-practising team did train before the game. If the teams both play to their potential it could be an entertaining game. Waimea College face off against Prices Pharmacy Black, with each playing a very different style. Waimea have a number of players who have had netball representative commitments during the holidays as well as players away with New Zealand Volleyball so there could be some tired bodies on court. Waimea have youth on their side and a versatile roster which is likely to see them over the line.
Netball Reporter editorial@nelsonweekly.co.nz when at times, was taking every second pass. Pip Dwyer was enthusiasm personified as she worked the circle well to return commendable shooting statistics. Olivia Dennis came on in “leaps and bounds” throughout the tournament. Playing either goal keep or goal defence she used her outside arm on a number of occasions to gain valuable ball. Nelson had a six win one loss record to finish third. Premier netball preview: The first round of the championship round for Premier Grade has been deferred to Sunday as Nelson College for Girls Health & Fitness Centre is being used for a New Zealand Basketball Tournament. The sixth seed will not be confirmed until after the promotion / relegation game
