MP to quiz on gay marriage Andrew Board
MP Nick Smith is hoping to be “guided” on controversial issues like gay marriage and euthanasia by Nelsonians as part of his annual survey, due to go out this week. During the first reading of the gay marriage bill at parliament in August, Nick voted against gay marriage but said he
would be led by the response of Nelson voters in this survey. “I am disappointed that this first reading vote came up before my annual survey gave all Nelson constituents an opportunity to express a view. I do wish my vote to reflect as closely as possible the majority view of Nelson people,” he said at the time. The survey also asks Nelsonians their
views on mineral development and making use of New Zealand’s mineral resources, whether euthanasia should be legal and whether locals support a government bill to limit Nick Smith. councils’ ability to spend. Nick says the four issues are of high pri-
ority and some are controversial. He says the local government bill is important for all ratepayers. “Rates have increased by 13 per cent per year in Nelson and 12 per cent per year in Tasman and the debt of our two councils has trebled to more than $200 million during the last decade. That is not sustainable. Government reforms to refocus councils’ role are sorely needed.”

The Pearly Queen Shirley Miles with Nelson Regional Hospice Trust chairwoman Elspeth Kennedy at the market on Saturday.
After a decade of working for the community, it is now rallying behind Shirley Miles to help her reach her goal of $100,000 in donations for the Nelson Regional Hospice Trust. Shirley featured on the front page of Nelson Weekly three weeks ago and since then shoppers at the Nelson market have donated another $1000 to her cause. On Saturday the Nelson Regional Hospice Trust held a small celebration for Shirley to mark her achievements and encourage the public to help her get over the line. The hospice presented the iconic market regular with a handmade glass artwork by Hoglund Glass and Nita Knight, founder of the Nelson Market says Shirley has
shown “an extraordinary feat of commitment” to the hospice. Nita added a donation on behalf of the market and stallholders for the “monumental and unselfish contribution” she says Shirley has made to the hospice. “The hospice is an amazing place for those who are suffering, and we thank Shirley for her contributions, she is an inspiration to us all,” says Nita. Shirley says that while $100,000 seems a lot, “it is only a drop in the ocean of need”. And she says she thanks kind members of the public who have donated to the cause. The hospice and Shirley hope the community will rally around the Pearly Queen to help her reach her fundraising target.

Search for owner of sunken boat Andrew Board A boat that partially sank at the mouth of the Maitai River last week has no apparent owner, according to Nelson City Council. The boat started “bobbing around” during a higher than normal spring high tide last Wednesday morning. It took on water and its bow was underwater by lunchtime. Contents of the boat floated out on the water according to eye witness named Murray. “There were oil cans and other bits of crap floating around so I went around in my dinghy and scooped it up.” Stephen Laurence of NCC says the boat has been moored at the river, on the bank next to the old Maitai Club, for several years and they are trying to find out who owns it. “The council has been trying to trace the owner of the boat for
some time, without success so far. It appears that it hasn’t been used or lived in for some time. If an owner can’t be traced the council will have to consider removing it in order to prevent damage to the marine environment if it breaks down.” Murray says he remembers seeing an older man who he thought owned the boat but he hasn’t seen him for some time. “He brought it over here and I think he just got older and tired and didn’t get down here as often and he slowly disappeared. I’ve never seen anybody down here around it for several years.” Harbour master Dave Duncan says the 4.6 metre high tide last Wednesday was bigger than normal. He says the office is working with the council to find a solution to the boat problem. Anyone who knows details about the owner and where they can be contacted is asked to call Nelson City Council on 546 0200.

Nelson parties after parade Four thousand people wove through the streets in a bright and vibrant Masked Parade in Nelson on Friday night. Thousands of spectators watched the annual parade lining the streets as myths and legends danced their way past. Masked schools and groups depicted legends of dragons and fairytales, and the parade was welcomed by an enthusiastic crowd says arts festival director Sophie Kelly. Sophie says she was amazed at the creativity and effort put in by the entrants of the Masked Parade, and Upper Moutere School won the Kim Merry Supreme Group Award for their Willy Wonka entry. First prize for best Group went to Tasman Home Educators for their interpretation of Pandora’s Box. The carnivale hosted an array of entertainment that saw parade goers mingling into the night on a closed off Trafalgar St. Kids ganged up on members of the Nelson Giants in a friendly
game of street basketball, and food stalls were serving crowd favourites such as snow cones and other festival fare at outdoor tables and chairs. Live bands such as Tahuna Breaks and H’Sao performed to the crowd at a stage set up at the bottom of the cathedral steps, and Nelson College for Girls student Caitlin Abbott, 16, who was at the parade and carnivale with friends said she was enjoying the night. “I thought the parade was amazing this year, there was a lot of creativity, and seeing New Vinyl perform was awesome.” Sophie says the young carnivale goers were well behaved and she thought it was great that they respected the alcohol ban and recognised the carnivale was for everyone. “The event was really family friendly, it is a community event and it’s not unusual to see four generations out there having a great time.” There were four “minor” arrests on the night according to police.

Health board posts loss Your Community Newspaper
Just months after receiving praise for its service and meeting health targets the DHB has posted a deficit of $5.2 million, against a budgeted surplus of $100,000. The Nelson Marlborough District Health Board’s 2011/12 annual report was released last week which highlighted the budget blowout. The DHB’s total revenue for the year was $408m. This was used for health services in
the community, such as GP visits, pharmacy and NGO services as well as local and national hospital services for the 140,000 people of Nelson Marlborough. NMDHB, Chief Executive John Peters says it has done well in national health targets with 103 per cent of the elective target achieved and no one waiting over six months for a procedure or a first specialist assessment at the end of June 2012. “How-
ever our achievement of reduced waiting times for surgery increased our costs by more than we planned; bringing our medical and nursing costs and expenditure on clinical supplies over budget by $2m.” NMDHB board chair, Jenny Black says with the continuing fiscal constraints and the ageing population the DHB will continue to face a number of challenges in the years ahead.
High tide forms lake in car park A high tide caused cars to take an unexpected dip at midday on Thursday, when water levels rose onto Wakatu car park. A spring high tide of 4.6m occurred on Thursday causing water levels to rise in the drainage system below the car park, which is built upon reclaimed seabed. Communications advisor for the Nelson City Council, Annabel Kemplin says the occasional king tide can cause Wakatu Square to become awash, and while unusual it was nothing to worry about. The water covered footpaths and was seen as high as half way up car tyres but it didn’t last long, receding just half an hour after it rose into the car park and square.
She says the focus for the current year is to live within its means while still delivering quality health services to the public of Nelson Marlborough. Jenny says the DHB would accelerate the pace of change while it worked toward the Government’s objectives of improved patient and population health outcomes and a more responsive, interconnected system of health, disability and support care.

When analogue was tops Next year Nelson will have its analogue television network turned off but the man who helped install the system in Nelson says it was revolutionary in 1971. Sinead Ogilive reports.
It’s hard to imagine a time when people would have stopped in the street at the sight of a TV in a shop window, but Laurie Merrick, 89, remembers the awe the Nelson community had for TV in its first appearances. Nelson will switch off its analogue TV transmitter next year, but Laurie remembers the excitement that came with the Grampians television transmitter that provided Nelsonians with their first good quality picture. “It was the first high quality stuff for Nelson. Before it was pretty hairy,” says Laurie from his Stoke home. Nelson in 1971 saw men in a collar and tie to work, Ford Anglias driving the streets, the community bickering over whether the Trafalgar centre should be built, and of course, the launch of clear television thanks to the analogue network. Laurie was involved in the major advance
for viewers with coverage to the Nelson district from the tower atop the Grampians, the first permanent system of its kind for Nelson he says. As the transmission superintendent for the New Zealand Broadcasting Corporation Laurie headed a team responsible for the installation of the new television network for the region which he says was evolutionary for people in Nelson. Getting the tower in place was a huge feat, with specialist riggers scaling the tower building it bit by bit, and having to dig out the road to the top of the Grampians was a big project he says. Laurie says Landrovers were the only vehicle that could scale the hill, and the equipment was carried up bits at a time, and after the foundations for the tower had been laid, the tower itself took two to three weeks to install. TV had only been around for the past
few years in the South Island and Laurie describes the signal provided by private translators in Nelson as “very, very fuzzy and nasty at times” as they were trying to pick pictures up from a transmitter in Wellington. In a newspaper article in 1971 Laurie was quoted as saying “there would be some people in Nelson who could get a TV picture for the first time” and most people did not own their own television. At the time, there was an excitement in the community and Laurie says people were inclined to “rush in and get a set” in preparation for the new system While the Murchison tower on Mt Rochford stopped receiving programmes only last month, Nelsons Grampians tower is due for the big switch off in October next year, which will be almost 42 years to the date since it changed the lives of Nelsonians.

Poynters Cres reopens 10 months after flood Poynters Crescent off Rocks Rd, which has been closed by a slip since last December’s flood event, reopened on Friday. The crescent is the most convenient route to Harbour Terrace meaning affected residents had a longer detour during the closure. The slip was substantial and the edge of the land had to be stabilised before the debris at the base near Rocks Rd could be removed, says Nelson City Council. The $225,000 project was completed by Fulton Hogan, which has been on site since August. The work involved putting 19 six metre long steel poles and 18 anchors reaching nine metres into the bank. New kerb and channelling as well as sumps and two new drains will help control stormwater on Harbour Terrace and the bank has been hydro-seeded with grass as the last step in stabilisation. Alec Louverdis, of NCC, is conscious of the wait to get the job done and the impact on residents. “This has not been a quick fix and we have been mindful of the inconvenience to residents. The council has ensured they have been kept informed of the progress and has really appreciated their cooperation and understanding. It’s great residents can finally get some sense of normality back.”

RSA recruit youngest ever Andrew Board Nelson solider Joe Rae became the youngest ever veteran to sign up for the Nelson RSA last week. Signaller Joe Rae, 21, returned from serving in Afghanistan with the RNZSigs unit earlier this month and the former Nelson College student was quickly offered membership to the Returned Service Association. He says he was keen to get involved and was enjoying listening to stories from previous wars and previous generations. “I’ve got so much respect for what these men did so it’s great to be able to listen to what they did,” he says. Joe’s membership was made official last week and Nelson president Barry Pont says it’s a breath of fresh air to have the youngster involved. “No matter what age you are all these men have something in common and Joe’s been great in talking with the older veterans,” he says. “We’d be really keen to have more
younger members, those in Nelson that may have served in any of the forces.” The RSA has a three tiered membership and Joe is the youngest ever to the join the Nelson RSA as a veteran, or someone who has returned from a battle zone. Joe is currently on leave after his service overseas and will return to work at the Burnham Military Base in just over a week. He says he enjoyed his time in Afghanistan and was keen to serve elsewhere overseas. “I’ve always wanted to join the army and go and do something. So I was really excited to go to Afghanistan and experience that,” he says. Joe says he is working towards being a communications systems operator in the army and is enjoying life in the armed services. He says he still calls Nelson home and will pop along for a beer with his new RSA mates whenever he is back in town.

NCC finalist for workplace award Annual feedback by Nelson City Council staff to its annual staff survey has propelled the organisation into a finalist position for the Kenexa Best Workplaces Awards 2012. The council is one of ten finalists in the group of organisations sized 150-399 employees. The group includes organisations from many sectors, not only local government. The full list of finalists can be found at the Kenexa website. Kenexa Best Workplaces (formerly known as the ‘JRA Best Workplaces Survey’) is New Zealand’s largest annual workplace climate-employee engagement survey. It allows organisations to gather feedback from employees about their workplace. NCC’s acting chief executive Richard Johnson couldn’t be more pleased at the result. “This organisation has made remarkable progress from where
it was 10, even five years ago. Both the management and staff have done serious work to create a working environment and culture that means ‘making Nelson a better place’ isn’t something we say, it’s something we live every day. “Our effort has paid off with this recognition. I’m proud of our staff and I know they are very pleased about being a finalist for this award.” The council has taken part in this survey since 2005. Results have improved each time, measuring a growing employee engagement and overall satisfaction with working at the council. “Several years ago we set ourselves a goal to be the best workplace in New Zealand," says Richard. "While this is quite an aspiration, the recognition from Kenexa tells us that we are well on the way to achieving this.” The Awards take place in Auckland on 1 November.
Retailer celebrates 20 years Andrew Board
Twenty years ago Avery Dash, an “old hippie from the bush”, opened his alternative store in Nelson’s Hardy St to open up a world of possibilities for locals. This Saturday he will celebrate Possibilities birthday content he’s achieved his goal. “In those days there was only one shop in Nelson that sold incense. There was very little, yet there was a lot of alternative, back to the line people around who were excited to see us open,” says Avery. Avery arrived in Nelson after eight years at the Tui community in Golden Bay. He was a co-caretaker at Fairfield House when he hosted the Festival of Possibilities as part of the celebrations around Nelson’s 150th anniversary in 1992. The success of the festival prompted Avery to open the store and follow the theme through it. “I opened up in a little shop on Hardy St having never owned a shop in my life, I just let it carry me away. I had an interest in books and the gift end started building itself up. “In those days there weren’t places really for people to go and talk about their spiritual side, non-Christian spiritual side. This was a place where people could come in and talk to me about it and maybe find a book that will help them on their way.” Over the years Avery says he’s met some amazing people and that has been the highlight. “You want the turnover to keep the business open but the thrill is the people. Things like that are just wonderful.” He says trading is harder now than it has ever been but he has not expanded his businesses to the internet and it's tough going against that. “The truth of the matter is that I’m an old hippie from out in the bush and I haven’t embraced the internet as much as could be done. That hasn’t been who I’ve been. “When I first opened the shop I didn’t even have a fax machine, it was another three or four years before we got around
to a fax machine. So reordering was by telephone or letter. Now I’m reordering every day,” he says. Avery says after 20 years he’s made the decision to retire and will do so in May next year. He hopes someone will be keen to keep the shop going and even allow him to work part time if possible. He says it will be sad to walk away from the store that has played such a big role in his life. “I’m not sure what the future of the store is. I’ve had such an amazing time with it, met such great people and learnt so much. Hopefully there is someone out there that would like to continue it and put their stamp on it.”

Fashion show raises $6k for charity Phillip Rollo A fashion show at the Grace Church has raised $6000, highlighting its growth since first forming just eight years ago. Event founder Judy Sisam is part of international organisation the Soroptimists of Waimea. Some of the $6000 will go towards a grant that is given to women and girls for the betterment of their education. The remainder of the money will go towards other charities. The fashion show was held last Tuesday
evening at the Headingly Centre and was attended by a record 300 people. The fashion show included eight models, modelling clothing from Beetees, which also helped organise the event, footwear from Whitwell’s Motueka while there was also music from local performer Paul Madsen as well as an exhibition of artwork. Judy says there were 48 changes of clothing throughout the show. “It was casual day-wear and then eveningwear. We had some really great, upbeat music which was different for each segment,” she says.
“It was a really fun evening and people were up on their feet singing and dancing.” The target audience was “the more mature women” from 20 years old through to 70 years old. The event’s success comes Judy Sisam. from its overall package with Judy describing it as a show, not just going into a shop and seeing clothing. “Each year we are trying to introduce
something different. Last year a local florist did an exhibition and this year was introducing the art as it coincides with the Nelson Arts Festival that is on at the moment.” Next year the event could include the addition of male models and Judy says there has already been support from a number of local businesses looking to secure roles in the show, whether that is as a hairdresser, make-up artist or other. “We want to go big and better. I won’t give it away but there may be some male models.”

TO THE EDITOR
Your headlines welcoming a $400 million hand out to local Iwi, sounds like this is money from heaven. It is not. We the taxpayers will be paying for this. Yet your article proclaims this as being of great benefit to the community as a whole. Rubbish. Show me where any Maori hand outs have been shared with the whole community. Poor Maori families will not see a cent of it. It will be squandered and wasted, and there will be some rich Maori. Of course Geoff Mullen is smiling, his frequent use of ‘bloody’ is a reminder how this land was invaded and the local Maori slaughtered by Te Raupraha (sic) and his allied tribes in the early 1830s. This is how Maori obtained ‘ownership’. Roger Youmans, Nelson.

Show time for local school Broadgreen Intermediate is hoping to wow crowds with its bi-annual production next week, Showtime Spectacular. The show is set in the future, in 2110, when a group of teenagers stumble across an old theatre, an art form that has been confined to the history books. They wonder what it is and access the internet’s successor called “the link” by tapping their forehead and find out a little about it. With their curiosity tweaked an old jukebox comes to life and the “ghost” of a century old director shows them how great musical theatre was. Director Graeme Woods wrote the show which mixes pieces of music from famous shows with his own. He says the high energy show has a lot of music and dancing and will be great fun for the audience. “It’s a culmination of popular music from a variety of different shows. The story looks at the direction theatre might well go in due to the rapid evolution of technologies and home entertainment. As the world embraces technology more, fewer people are prepared to go to theatres to see the traditional arts of dance, drama and music.”
Broadgreen Intermediate actors from left; Samantha Boaz, Rochelle Tait, Clarissa Parkin, Bethany Versey and Brielle McCarthy. Photo: Andrew Board. Students started auditioning for parts in term two with rehearing kicking into top gear in term three. Graeme says more than 100 students are involved in either the choir, band, acting, dancing, stage crew, scenery construction, lighting, publicity and makeup. The script took Graeme around 30 hours to write, with the musical arrangements
and scores another 100 hours. He says it is getting exciting and the students are looking forward to performing. The show is at the Broadgreen School Hall on November 1, 2, 3. Tickets are available from the school’s front office and are $12 an adult, $5 a child (up to 14 years) or $25 for two adults and two children.

The Harbour Master’s
diary
• Three container vessels, one break bulk vessel, a car carrier, nine larger fishing vessels moved around the port, one tug came off the slipway and another went on. • Port Nelson’s new website has been launched and one of the exciting things for local boaties is access to up to date weather and tidal stream information as it happens. • When you are on the website select “Shipping Info” then “Harbour Conditions” and there will be the beautiful photo of the sunrise by Troy Dando (going fishing no doubt). • No 2 Pile Current meter is just inside the Cut. Note the Main Wharf wind and the Fairway Beacon. The fairway beacon is also known as the North Cardinal marker nearby the pilot station. • The spring tides this week have been very high with a 4.6m tide measured on Wednesday and Thursday. We were fortunate that no large swell was entering the harbour at the same time, however a small craft on the Maitai Channel was swamped. Remember the tide is king. If in doubt- don’t go out.

Nelson ARK moves to new site
The Nelson Ark has made Stonehurst Farm near Brightwater its permanent home having been based there temporarily for its last programme. The Ark, which combines dog training with youth support work, will also runs its Doggy Day Care business near the farm to help raise funds to continue the organisation’s growth. It was previously housed at Richmond Park. Community coordinator Karen Howieson says it is a fantastic facility that features a classroom, office and reception area. Karen says The Ark, which recently held its appeal week, is not just about helping people but also helping dogs. It has brought 70 dogs and people through its eleven programmes. “It’s about helping all creatures and our focus is on relationships and building those connections,” she says. Dog trainer Sue Walsh says priority is given to dogs that are most at risk. The dogs are picked up from the pound and the Nelson SPCA and will be adopted into residential homes fully trained after the eight week course. “We take dogs that might not find a home. They are re-homed with a lot of skills and that increases their chances of being adopted. Fifteen year old Waimea College student Gus Hawkins has just finished the programme along with five other teenagers. He says he really enjoyed working with animals. “It’s just such a good environment. War refugees shape Nelson Sinead Ogilvie Families fleeing the dangers of the Taranaki land wars have shaped the history of Nelson’s community says museum chief Peter Millward and he invites you to share your stories. Peter is the chief executive of the Tasman Bays heritage Trust, and the Nelson Provincial Museum is reaching out to Nelson families and encouraging them to share their stories of family ties to Taranaki. Historical local painter George Channing Gilbert’s move from Taranaki tells how the lives of refugees from the 1860s wars became intertwined with Nelson’s history. Escaping the hostilities of Taranaki as a young boy with his family, George made a life for himself as a painter in Motupipi, Golden Bay, and has etched a memorable image into Nelson’s history through his paintings says local Janet Hart. His watercolour “Limestone Cliffs Pohara Bay Motupipi” painted in picturesque style portrays the looming lime stone cliffs that towered over Pohara before European development and shows the context in which Maori and European settlers related during that time. Maori who had also fled the wars lived harmoniously in Motupipi, which is depicted by settlers shown in waka while Maori watch from the shore.

George Channing Gilbert’s painting of Pohara Bay. George contributed to the Nelson Institute as secretary and treasurer, and went on to have five children weaving the connection between Taranaki and Nelson today. Peter says although there are well known names and stories like George Channing Gilbert, the Rutherfords, and the Gullys that show our unique link to Taranaki, he says there are probably dozens more stories from local families. “Essentially we know a significant number of refugees came out of Taranaki to Nelson and never went back. We want to build up and share the stories of those people.” If you have a story you would like to share on how your family connections reach Taranaki, contact the Nelson Provincial Museum. It is hard to believe that this is the second column for October. I really do not know where the year has gone! Well, there is just so much to do in the spring garden it is hard to know where to start but I do know that in my garden is my favourite place to be. After yet another deluge of rain last week everything is looking fresh and clean and even the winds have not really bothered anything. The cherry blossoms have been outstanding and the cornus (dogwood) flowers are holding up well and just smothering the trees. My favourites, the Japanese maples (to which I am slightly addicted…) are all in lovely fresh leaf and do not seem to have suffered much of the dreaded “die back” that can affect these from season to season. If you do have a branch that appears to have died just cut it back and the tree will respond well. I would like to say a big thankyou to those readers who phone, email or even stop me when out walking with the Cruze and tell me how much they enjoy the articles and also ask a bit of advice. I have even found new neighbours. When I was asked about compost the other week the lady who called discovered that I walked past her place regularly. She popped around to inspect my new “rotating” compost bins – which are working very well – and we enjoyed a cuppa and a chat and a stroll in the garden, very enjoyable. The bins do work a treat and the added bonus is the very good “worm tea” that leaks from around the centre. Johnno went out and sourced some flat plastic bins, which we slide underneath and we then can collect this rather rich brew. It is a bit “on the nose” sometimes but as they say “if it don’t stink, it don’t work’! My plants are certainly not complaining.
As I was wandering around the garden with a friend yesterday, I thought I would list for you some of my favourites which are really looking great at present. Mainly they are the smaller “filler” type perennials and low growing shrubs that are so important to add layers of colour and texture (I know I do go on a bit about this – sorry!) However, I will always maintain that layering plants in a garden to give it a really full and balanced look makes a major difference to the overall effect. Heucheras - These come in a range

• Weeding and feeding is the go at present. Watch for pests starting to come out of the cold. • Snails are about, so keep an eye on your tender new veges – drown them in a saucer of beer, or use a snail bait. • Break up and divide mint now-I always recommend growing this herb in pots. Replant in fresh mix and you will have new mint in no time. Lamb is on the menu at our place for the Labour weekend visitors and just cannot be served without fresh mint sauce made with a touch of lemon juice and zest. • As for the rest it is a case of “hurry up and wait’! My tomatoes, capsicums etc are all looking to get in the ground and are getting very tired of being taken in and outside. They will be waiting until the end of the month as the ground temperatures are still too cold to risk planting them out just yet. Hope you had a great Labour Weekend with family and friends, We certainly did…
of colours, purples, green spice, marmalade, lime rickey to name a few and every season brings a new one onto the market. Great in sun or part shade and they look good all year round. Convolvulus Cneorum – Silver bush – Don’t be put off by the name! – this a stunning bush with beautiful silver grey foliage, pink tinged flowers opening to dazzling white. Hardy and easy to grow it needs good drainage and is well suited to most sites. Looks great under maples and is forming an excellent border along my drive with olives and black flax. Euphorbia polycroma – old fashioned cushion spurge – There are numerous euphorbia’s on the market now but this is a favourite perennial one. It forms a neat dome of House & Garden bright lime green flowers

Geranium – “Johnsons Blue” – One of the quintessential cottage garden plants that thrives under roses, but it also teams well with hebes, flaxes, choisyas, and other native plants. Trials for football team this weekend
Season over for high-flying Makos At least it ended with a bang. The Tasman Makos impressed their fans, commentators and opposition this season with entertaining and enterprising rugby but in the end it was undone by a rampant Otago team. Tasman lost its ITM Cup championship semi-final on Friday night, with the home side playing for plenty of pride after nearly not having a team due to financial reasons earlier this season. Tasman led the game at half time and scored two spectacular intercept tries in the second half to have a healthy 31-18 lead with just a quarter of the match remaining. But Otago held all the possession and three quick tries and the steady boot of its skipper Glenn Dickson saw it sneak ahead of the Makos with just minutes remaining. Tasman couldn’t get enough momentum to create any last minute heroics and lost the game 41-34. The game was also the last in a Makos jersey for captain Andrew Goodman.

New Zealand’s newest youth football franchise is holding trials this weekend at Saxton Field. The Nelson ASB Youth League team will start trialling at 10am on both Saturday and Sunday. Interested under 20 year old players can register for the trials at topsouthfootball@ gmail.com. Spokesperson for the franchise Aldo Miccio says many players have already registered interest. “But we welcome all football players keen to step onto the national football stage this coming

You can follow the progress of the team on Facebook. A team website will also be launched in November.

Softball tournament hard going for locals Carol Cook
While organisers of the annual NBS Labour Weekend Tournament were concerned about the weather predictions for the weekend, they need not have worried as conditions were perfect for the first two days of the tournament. The Saxton Field diamonds were groomed to perfection to showcase undoubtedly the best facility in the country. Two teams from Poneke Kilbirnie in Wellington and Canterbury’s Albion, Halswell, Papanui, Parklands Christchurch United and Marlborough’s Saints joined local teams Stoke Eagles and United Titans in the three day tournament. The nine teams play a round robin before the top two play the final on Monday. Stoke Eagles have to be satisfied with four wins, however they were a little disappointed with the 9-2 loss to Papanui. Canadian import, Brandon Peck has proved to be invaluable on the mound where he has claimed the four wins. He is throwing the ball hard to hit some great spots and can be expected to be given the ball for the final games on Monday. Derryn French believes his team can be competitive against Albion to “give them a run for their money”. Peck has been well supported by the youthful Daniel Mallabar, who has called the game well from behind the plate as well as some strong performances in the outfield. Should Daniel continue in a similar vein he can look forward to an impressive season. Evergreen Nathan Delaney and the experience of Damien Dolejs has been invaluable in the field, while Derryn has set high standards for himself he has led by example. It has been a tough weekend at the diamond for United

The team is a mixture of both experience and youth and each would have benefited from plying themselves against classy opposition which
includes a number of past or present Black Sox players. The Home Run Derby team competition was won by Titans Kyle Glass and Jeremy McIlroy, while PCU Devils Michael Sands won the individual prize.

Four players from the Tasman Thistle side have previously attended this tournament but decided to form a new team for the 2012 competition. “We didn’t do very well last time so we wanted to come again,” says team spokesperson Andy Morris. “We’re going to win, that’s the aim." The tournament begins on November 4.

Unique school course a highlight for cyclists Phillip Rollo What began as a “laugh and a joke” has now become one of the Konica Minolta Nelson Cycle Festival’s most participated and special events. The Urban X-Country Event sees cyclists loop a four lap course through Nelson College, with cyclists pedalling through the school pool, main hall and down the front set of stairs – something that would usually result in a trip to the principal’s office. The 2012 edition featured close to 100 riders with a larger field of under-15 riders than in previous years. There was also a “massive surge” of master riders, which meant the event was split into two different races. Event organiser Tim Tucker, who is also deputy principal at Nelson College, has been adding different sections to the course every year that it is held, to cater for the growing demand of entrants. “Next year I’m going to have to add more. There’s no doubt that this event is growing. We would have had 70 riders in the first year and we thought that was an awful lot but this year we would’ve cleared 100,” says Tim. Results have not “been the biggest part” for the event organisers. However, Hope’s Dean Fulton was officially the fastest cyclist on the night, taking victory in the open men’s class. Tim says there are several elements which make racing through the school so unique and believes it to be one of the only events similar in the world.
“I’m not aware of any other urban races in New Zealand. You read about some of them going through Italian cities. It’s just such an interesting setting and the big front steps are always pretty exciting to watch.” There has never been an accident on the stairs to date, despite some of the riders missing entire sections of stairs. “The first aid guy has a simple brief for all of the riders. He just stands there with a neck brace. It wouldn’t look pretty if someone overcooked it big time.” Nelson Cycle Festival organiser Chris Butler says events like the Urban X-Country Event enable all cyclists to be involved in the festival. Because of its location there is only minimal travel involved getting there. “The opportunity to bring some of these events into urban areas like the Nelson City Criterium and this gives the general public an opportunity to be closer to the action and give things a go.” The next events on the cycle festival calendar include Friday night’s Nelson premiere of the film Premium Rush. Moviegoers are encouraged to cycle to the 8pm screening. Tickets are $20 and include a glass of wine or juice on arrival. Tickets are available at a2b-ecycle on South St in Nelson; The Tasman Wheelers Woollaston, Edwards, Neudorf 68 km Course on Saturday; the “Milk & Honey” Road and Mountain bike Race in Takaka on Sunday and the Gentle Cycle Brightwater Vineyard Ride. For full Nelson Cycle Festival details and to register for one of the remaining events, visit www.nelsoncy clefest.co.nz.
