Port Nelson and Nelson Airport are proposing to join forces and operate under a new company after looking for ways to prepare for an uncertain future. The proposal is currently before
Nelson City Council and Tasman District Council, which own both the port and the airport, 50 per cent each. The proposal, which is being led by the board of Port Nelson, began last year. The port began to look at several options to help “realise synergies” across the two organisations, according to a joint
statement by Nelson City Council and Tasman District Councils. The proposal would see a new company formed and the councils’ 50/50 ownership transferred into it. It would be run as a council-controlled organisation or CCO. The operational structure of both companies would continue. However, the statement
acknowledges that there would be “financial benefits” to the proposal and “increased resilience” across both the port and the airport. “In the early part of 2020, the operations of both companies were impacted by Covid-19,” the joint statement says. “Whilst they are performing well, there is still
considerable uncertainty about the long-term impacts on the global economy.” Neither Port Nelson or Nelson Airport management or governance would comment on the proposal. Tasman Mayor Tim King says, should the proposal be

Rotary is kicking off the fundraising to the tune of $500 and seeks help from the community to raise as much of the remainder as possible. Jo Kent In a monumental move for conservation, the Tasman District Council has been given the green light to introduce two European insects, the hoverfly and waspnest beetle, to tackle the country’s chronic wasp problem. Tasman, with its honeydew covered beech trees, has the highest density of wasp nests in the entire world, with around 30 nests per hectare with each nest containing thousands of wasps. The invasive German and common wasps thrive on the honeydew, restricting the food source for native insects and birds, while disrupting the ecosystem and costing the economy $133 million a year in damages and management. The TDC applied for permission to introduce the insect bio control agents last September and have now been granted permission to use them. The Environ-

said Chris Hill, general manager of hazardous substances and new organisms. Both the hoverfly and beetle will attack wasp nests. The hoverfly will lay eggs in the nest which, in turn, eats the wasp larvae. The new insects will need to be bred here in New Zealand, and

it’s thought it will take around two years before they are ready to be released into nature. “We have to collect larvae in the wild from the UK,” says said Paul Sheldon, the Tasman District Council’s biosecurity and biodiversity co-ordinator. “Then get it back here into a suitable rearing facility. As they are coming from the Southern to Northern hemisphere, they need to retune and breed in cycles which will reset their clocks so that when they hatch, they are being useful at the right times, in the correct seasons. That will take a while. “The attempt at bio control isn’t new,” continues Paul. “You can never be certain how much impact the new insects will have. They won’t eliminate the problem, but they will weaken the wasp population, so it will be interesting to see how well they establish and what effect that has across the country.”

Plugging our measles vaccination gap Charles Anderson Nelson Marlborough Health is ramping up efforts to find young people in the region who may have missed out on the measles vaccine. According to the health board’s data there are 8500 people between the ages of 15 and 30 across the Top of the South, however it’s not clear how many of them are still needing to get vaccinated for the disease. “There are many people in that age group who missed out on those childhood vaccinations for a whole lot of different rea-
sons,” says associate director of nursing Jill Clendon. So, the health board is advocating anyone in that age group who is unsure if they had the MMR vaccine to come in, just in case. “If you don’t know, it’s best to get immunised. It’s safe to have an extra dose of the vaccine.” Last year, 2000 Kiwis got sick from measles and 700 of them needed to be hospitalised. The consequences of measles can be serious as it can cause swelling on the brain and other conditions that can be fatal. She says that measles is highly contagious. If you have one
person that catches the disease they will likely spread it to 1218 others. “It’s a challenge. It’s really hard to engage people in this age group. Getting them in the doors is really tough. While building consents in the Tasman region for residential buildings are 10 per cent higher in the December 2020 quarter than the previous year, there has been a drop in the Nelson region according to Statistics New Zealand. “It reflects the growth Tasman is experiencing and has been for a number of years now. Free period products for Tasman schools Jo Kent Waimea College will be among the schools offering free menstrual products to its pupils under the new Government initiative as of June this year. In a landmark decision by Jacinda Ahern last week, all schools will be able to join the scheme and provide period care to pupils. The Ministry of Education will make sanitary products available towards the end of term
2 for schools that opt-in by March. Those schools that do not take up the scheme will continue to be able to opt-in at a later date. Principal for Waimea College, Scott Haines, says, “It’s a common sense approach and one we will be welcoming here.” The initiative is thought to tackle issues with periods at school including embarrassment, stigma, missing classes, being ‘caught out’ without product, cost, lack of knowl-
edge and discomfort. “Young people should not miss out on their education because of something that is a normal part of life,” says Jacinda. “We want to see improved engagement, learning and behaviour, fewer young people missing school because of their period, and reduced financial hardship among families of participating students.” It’s estimated that period products can cost around $15 per child each month.
Nelson Matters Urgent changes are needed to give first home buyers in Nelson and Tasman a fairer go in our overheated property market. The hardest part of buying a first home today is pulling together a deposit. Getting a deposit will get harder next Monday with the Government’s banking rules requiring bigger deposits. The First Home Scheme I
set up as Building and Housing Minister helps by giving a government grant of up to $20,000 for a deposit on a home and enables people to use all their Kiwisaver funds. The grant is limited to purchasing a modest home with a price cap set in Nelson and Tasman at $500,000 for an existing home and $550,000 for a new home. The scheme has been work-
ing well with 2500 people since 2015 in Nelson and Tasman buying a first home using the grant. But last year house prices soared 20 per cent or $100,000 to a median of $720,000. There are very few homes below the price caps and numbers accessing the scheme plummeted. It is nonsensical that government support locally reduced 30 percent last year, resulting in
an underspend of $800,000 at a time when it has never been tougher to be a first home buyer. Politics is getting in the way of a sensible fix. Labour criticised Nationals home deposit grant saying Kiwibuild was a much better answer. History has proved this wrong with 80,000 New Zealanders helped into home ownership through the First Home Scheme and only 500 through
Kiwibuild. There has not been one Kiwibuild house built in Nelson / Tasman despite Labours pledge of 1000 homes. Nelson and Tasman first home buyers urgently need access to the First Home grant scheme to fund a deposit. The house price cap needs fixing to realistic levels of about $700,000. It is just part of the housing solution but needs doing now. Advert.

The Richmond Library is the second library to offer a new reading programme that is a first in New Zealand. The aim of the programme is to have families develop a daily reading habit with their children. “It’s about everyone in the Tasman District reading aloud to their kids from birth,” says Assistant Librarian - Children and Young Adults Services, Mary Butler. The programme called 1,000 Books Before School urges families to start reading aloud to their children as early in
their child’s life as possible. Especially in the first 1,000 days of a child’s life when their brains are hungry for input. Providing children with a wealth of oral language aims to improve their communication and provide a foundation for literacy for the future. It will also help build a foundation for successful learning once they get to school and onwards. The programme, unique to the Tasman District, was developed and successfully trialled in 2017 by Mary Butler at Motueka Library and Miranda Sikking of the Motueka Family Service Centre. Trees and power lines don’t mix Trees and vegetation can cause power cuts. That’s why it is important to manage them so that they don’t grow too close to power lines.
Getting help from a Justice of the Peace in the heart of Richmond has just been made easier. A JP service desk at the Richmond Public Library now runs on Wednesdays, 11.30 am to 12.30 pm. “The Richmond Library desk is the latest of our service desks to get underway,” says Nelson Tasman Justices of the Peace Association President, Chris Bascand. He said that while the service desk was a trial, it was hoped
public demand would see the desk continue and its service times expand. “Demand for our services at the Richmond Mall on Saturday mornings has always been strong and so we hope this extra desk will provide the local community with more options,” says Chris. “Our Justices are volunteers who provide this service in their own time and at no cost,” says Chris. “JPs are people who have a passion for voluntary community service.”
The Nelson Tasman Association currently has 162 members, seven of whom also sit in Court dealing with minor offences and bail applications. “We run regular training for our members, which is really important,” says Chris. Legislation keeps changing and laws like the anti-money laundering legislation have a big impact on our service.” JPs are asked to complete an online test every two years to keep their accreditation current and to ensure they’re up to date.”
Our vegetation team surveys the network regularly, checking for trees and other vegetation that is a risk to the power lines. Before you plant anything near power lines, consider how big it will grow. We send ‘cut and trim’ (CT) notices to property owners where we find any trees growing too close to our power lines. We are required to do this by law under the Electricity (Hazard from Trees) Regulations. If you receive a CT notice you can choose to have the trees trimmed or felled. The Regulations state that each tree is entitled to one free trim. We keep a database of each surveyed site so if you are eligible for a free trim, our tree contractor will cut the tree back to a safe distance from the lines. You are then responsible for keeping the tree trimmed in the future so that it doesn’t grow too close again. Trees notified to you in a CT notice must only be cut by a network certified arborist. They have specific training and the necessary insulated tools to safely cut trees close to power lines. Our vegetation surveyors also look for trees that are a high risk to the power lines – these include trees that are diseased, or have damaged trunks/broken branches that could fall onto the power lines. Owners of these trees will be contacted by our surveyors to discuss their options. Surveying our power lines and working with tree owners in this way has dramatically reduced the number of power outages caused by trees. Whale tale breaks ankle
A woman was hit by a whale’s tale on Monday, resulting in a call to the Nelson Marlborough Rescue Helicopter. She was taken from an area of stranded whales at Farewell Spit, to Nelson Hospital and found to have a broken ankle. The rescue helicopter had a busy week with eleven callouts from Wednesday 18 February to Tuesday 23 February, five within a 12-hour period. These included a call to John Tait Hut in the Nelson Lakes National Park to pick up an injured
New boss for Tasman Rugby
Lyndon Bray is the new chief executive office of the Tasman Rugby Union. Lyndon, 54 was previously the boss of the NZ Referees Association. He refereed seven internationals between 2001 and 2008 before becoming the NZRU’s high performance referee manager. He replaces Tony Lewis who led Tasman rugby from 2013. Tony not only led the team to backto-back Mitre 10 Cup premiership titles, he also saw an All Blacks’ test match in Nelson for the first time.

It’s great that New Zealand’s COVID-19 vaccine roll-out has officially begun. The first shipment of around 60,000 doses arrived as airfreight in Auckland last week, with our first border workers receiving their first shot of the Pfizer/BioNTech vaccine on Saturday. The 30,000 courses will be enough to vaccinate our border workers over the next two to three weeks. The cleaners, nurses who undertake health checks in MIQ, security staff, customs and border officials, airline staff and hotel workers that have been working hard to keep New Zealanders safe at the border are the most at risk of coming into contact with the virus, and our immunisation programme will help to protect them and keep COVID out of our communities. We’re expecting further shipments of the vaccine over the coming weeks and will receive about 225,000 vaccine courses by the end of March, which we’ll roll out to border workers’ household contacts, then to more frontline healthcare and essential workers, plus those most at risk if infected, such as older people. My dad, who lives in the UK, has had his first vaccination and is due to have his second shortly. It’s fantastic to see how quickly the international science community has come together to create a vaccine that will help to keep us safe from COVID-19.

A whole community of garage sales Jacqui Rawson The Brightwater community are holding their garage sales all together this Saturday, 27th February. “I like the concept of it, reselling things rather than being a throw-away society,” says organiser Jilly Perry. The organisers provide the marketing behind the event and the garage sales signs to use on the day. “We just want people to

bring the community together because so often we don’t know our neighbours. At the last count, there
were 17 households around Brightwater set to have a garage sale. “It’s a chance to sell those things you don’t need or find that special thing you’ve been looking for while being together as a community,” he says. Hollybush Drive has the most households having garage sales to date. The outcome of Saturday will decide if more of the same events will take place in the future.

A two-day public hearing is underway tomorrow to look at proposed changes within the Olive Estate Lifestyle Village in Richmond. The main issues being addressed are ones that don’t adhere to Council requirements. These include the failure of the applicants, Olive Estate Lifestyle Village to provide public reserve to the standard of the Tasman Resource Management Plan (TRMP). These public recreational areas or green space are areas meant for the use of the general public not only for residents of Olive Estate. “This is a key issue of contention that the hearing commission will

TDC principal planner, Alastair Jewell. Another area of concern is the
applicants request to fill in the historical water irrigation pond which objectors believe should be
kept as an amenity and for ecological purposes. Additionally, a care facility building is to be built. The height of it is planned to reach 10.5 metres or three-storeys. This exceeds the 7.5 metre limited according to council bylaws and is another cause of objection. Sixty others out of a total 76 submissions have submitted their opposition to these proposed changes. The public hearing is taking place over two days at Club Waimea from 9 am tomorrow 25th February. After the hearing is officially closed the commission has up to 15 working days to provide issue notices. All documents related to the hearing and the application are stored on the TDC website.
Supporting Tasman’s rural seniors Jacqui Rawson A Community Connects grant has been awarded to Age Concern Nelson Tasman from the Office for Seniors. The grant will fund Age Concern’s project which is focused on supporting seniors in rural areas. “This Community Connects grant
will allow us to get to the parts of Tasman we haven’t been able to get to until now,” says Manager of Age Concern Nelson Tasman, Caroline Budge. The project focus is to encourage social connection in rural parts of the region, using a community-led approach. They will achieve this by working
directly with older people, volunteers, and existing social networks to find the gaps and establish more socialising opportunities according to the needs locally. “Rural isolation is a pressing issue and we’re very grateful for the funding to help us in this very worthwhile project.” Office for Seniors Director, Diane
Turner, says projects like this one are crucial for becoming more agefriendly. “With the right planning and support, we can create agefriendly environments where everyone, regardless of age, feels valued, connected and able to actively participate in the community,” says Diane. The junior children at Henley School were treated to a visit from the Life Education Trust’s Harold the giraffe during their annual Teddy Bear’s Picnic last week. The schoolchildren were asked to bring in their favourite teddies for the al fresco picnic, and parents and caregivers were invited along to join in the event, too. The charity works in schools to help educate and inspire children and young people to make positive life choices. Through the ‘Healthy Harold’ programme, the children receive individualised health and wellbeing learning experiences with specialist educators in a mobile classroom. Nelson Lakes National Park. He carries food for seven days with him. “I have worked to keep the weight down, but I do take a packet of bacon and some cheese as my luxury items,” says Bruce. Bruce says he has the presidential suite. While hikers sleep lined up on plastic bunk mattresses, enduring each other’s snoring, Bruce has a small room to himself with a bed, table and chairs, a small kitchenette, and the best view of the lake. His days start with a weather update which he passes on to the few trampers who haven’t left by 8.40 am. Once the hut clears, it is time for Bruce to clean the hut and the toilets.
Raising awareness about hearing loss. March is Hearing Awareness Month and Hearing Awareness Week will take place in the first week of the month. Hearing Nelson is a charitable organisation that has been helping to improve the lives of the deaf and hard of hearing in the Top of the South since 1953. It is planning a host of events to increase understanding and empathy for those in our region living with a hearing loss, and to promote safe listening practices at home, at school and in the workplace. People can come along to presentations, which will be held next week at various times and locations. They will include a presentation by keynote speaker Professor Dirk De Ridder called

Heatherbell’s Orchard – a story of three generations Marg Farrelly Heatherbell’s Orchard, on the main road between Hope and Brightwater, was well known in the district for the quality of fruit sold to the public. For a number of decades, it was a very popular destination for those wanting to stock up on the various varieties of stone and pip fruits grown on site. At the age of 18, George Heatherball was a miner living in Ogley Hay, Staffordshire, England. In 1876 George decided to base himself in Canada taking up land on Denman Island. Very soon after, he decided Hornby Island offered a better prospect for him to establish an orchard, and in 1883 -1884 he paid $1 per acre for 304 acres. This be-
came Maplehurst Orchard and the place where he built his home. George married Annie Matilda Graham, in 1884. This union produced a family of seven children: two daughters and five sons, the youngest of all being Alan Edwin Gwynne Heatherbell, born in 1900. It was during the recording of a Census in Canada that the spelling of the name changed from Heatherball to Heatherbell. George established his orchard on Hornby Island and improved it over the following fifteen or so years before moving to land near Victoria on Vancouver Island in 1902. Here, he established a new orchard at Colwood that he named Glen Lea. Two years later, his wife Annie died, leaving George with his
youngest child only four years of age. Over the years, he became quite an authority on the best growing methods to be employed by orchardists, writing a booklet published in Canada with the title Fruit-Growing on Vancouver Island, B.C., Canada. He also became a lecturer on horticulture for the Provincial Government of British Columbia. In 1911, he made the decision to emigrate to Australia, deciding on Tasmania, and established a new orchard on land at Deep Bay near Hobart. In 1914 three of his sons enlisted in the Australian army, which led to their being posted overseas. George found it difficult to maintain the orchard without the labour of his sons, and so he leased

grafting to the Nelson region. The growers had planted many inferior varieties in the Moutere Hills area, unsuited to the growing conditions, which meant they produced substandard fruit. Many of these varieties were subsequently grafted over with better producing stock. George and his youngest son, usually known as Gwynne, remained in the Mahana-Mapua area where Gwynne found work on a local orchard. About 1919, he was first introduced to the Thawley family who had come across from Wellington. They had bought and moved to a newly established orchard at Mahana in 1915. Gwynne became a frequent visitor to the family, very much attracted to Alice, one of the daughters.

As yet another outbreak of Covid-19 visits our nation you might find that inner peace is illusive. And you wouldn’t be alone. Even before Covid our culture appeared to be growing increasingly anxious and I think anxious fears are a reality for all of us. They contribute to serious mental health disorders. What can we do? Unlike some problems, we can’t just revoke the citizenship of anxiety and ship it off to another country! The answer to the anxiety pandemic is complex. But here’s an idea that might help. Guard your mind! With the advent of the Information Age, and advances in technology, our hearts and minds can quickly become overwhelmed by the tragedy of others. Be it famine, disease, war, mass shootings; or any of a thousand other challenges we can be exposed to the trauma
of these just by clicking a button. Producers of modern media have become experts at grabbing our attention with infotainment. Their goal? To get us to consume increasing amounts of their product and generates billions of dollars in advertising. And we let them! Because we are dopamine addicts! Screen use releases dopamine in the brain, which can negatively affect impulse control. Studies have shown screen time affects the frontal cortex of our brain, similar to the effect of cocaine use. It acts like a digital drug for our brain. How do we guard our minds? Here’s some ideas: 1. Limit your news intake! Stay informed, but don’t overindulge. Your heart can only stand so much trauma. 2. Guard your heart / mind. Proverbs 4:23 warns us, ‘Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from
it.’ The heart is a metaphor for the whole inner life – thinking, feeling, and willing. So, what we allow into our ‘heart’ will affect what we think, feel, and do. Be careful what you entertain yourself with. 3. Analyse your thought life. Where does your imagination linger? What fuels your fears and harmful desires? Through the bible God speaks and instructs us how to guard our thoughts. We’re told to, ‘Take every thought captive.’ And: ‘Whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable – if anything is excellent or praiseworthy – think about such things.’ Does this describe your dominate thought patterns? If not, identify the source that fuels destructive thoughts and evict it. These instructions were issued for our benefit. But will we listen? May you find God’s peace and hope in these troubled days.
Loads of summer organised runs Yvonne West The 2021 Summer Running Programme is proving very popular with Nelson/Tasman runners and walkers. Not only did 130 people enjoy the New Year’s Day 10km and the Wakefield Summer Roaster, but also the two races so far in the Waimea Harriers Eddyline 5km Series, which have had over 70 enthusiastic participants. Many runners and walkers from our region also took part in the Buller Marathon, Half Marathon and 10km Fun Runs held at Westport on 13th February, with several taking out high plac-
ing’s in their respective event and age group. Tania Gardner turned out an impressive performance winning the Woman’s Half Marathon Walk in 2.27.34 hours. Clinton Manderson was equally as impressive, coming home 2nd overall in the Full Marathon in 2.48.51hrs. Other athletes to receive performance prizes were Andrew Barker, 3rd 60+yrs male in the Full Marathon. In the Half Marathon, Yvonne West, 1st 65+yrs female, Gillian Thornton, 3rd 55+yrs female, Barry Dewar, 1st 70+yrs male and Alan West, 3rd Male overall and 1st 70+yrs male walker.

Wanderers-Motueka desere cricket contest Saturday was a milestone day for Taylors Wanderers with the Tasman Premiership League 50 over semi-final match against top qualified ACOB at Botanics. The young Wanderers-Motueka team fully deserved to be in the contest due to performances in the competition prior to Saturday, and hopes were high that the team may be able to even take the next step. Batting first, ACOB bowlers ex-
erted great pressure on the young opposition and 1/1 became 2/2 and then ACOB snared the valuable wicket of Harsh Visavadiya and Wanderers -Mot were 10/3, before Alex Brogan and Kyle Paki Paki showed some resistance, batting together for 17 overs and adding 46 runs before the side was dismissed in the 45th over for a disappointing 101. Two quick wickets by Logan Ogilvie, supported by excellent
slip catching by Visavadiya, had ACOB at 16/2 and then Skipper Hayden Ingham got the 3rd wicket, this time with a fine slips catch from Craig Hampton and Wanderers-Motueka were encouraged at 21/3. Unfortunately, that was to be all for the visitors and some belligerent batting from Ben Hazlett and Josh Simpson got ACOB home in 14 overs. Wanderers-Motueka was certain-
ly disappointed but everything was put in context on Sunday when the final saw ACOB dismiss the Marlborough Falcons for 141, and then reach the target of 142 in 38 overs and be crowned 2021 TPL 50 over champions. The Wanderers 2nd Grade team recorded a fine win against Wakatu on Saturday chasing down the 250 set, scoring 254 with the last pair at the wicket and with only 3 balls left to be bowled.
Nathan della Bosca took out the top score with 73. Rupert Souch scored 65, but all players contributed to a genuine team effort. A pleasing outcome of the work being undertaken by Harsh Visavadiya within the local schools has been the addition of a second team in the College T25 competition with both teams turning on a good contest at Brightwater Domain on Saturday.

Max was one of hundreds of veteran players defying their age at the Pascoes Tennis NZ Seniors National Championships held in Nelson recently. The local stalwart and oldest player in the tournament played four games over the weekend, pushing his physical limits. “I am very tired and a bit achy, but I play through all these pain barriers, because unfortunately I do still love it.” Max competed in both doubles and singles. The singles games are becoming more difficult for him to keep up. “It is very noticeable playing singles, it is strictly a running

However, he admits he may not have many more years in him. “I have to decide if I want to stop playing or put up with pain.” Max is on a waiting list for an operation on his knee but believes he may be waiting a while before the operation takes place. “It is getting harder and harder but I’m going to hang in there as much as I can. If I have to stop tomorrow, I’d be disappointed but content that I have achieved everything I wanted to.”

Water update As the hot dry weather continues, water restrictions are now in place for some areas. These are updated every week as the Dry Weather Taskforce meets to balance demand against the available supply. As well as restrictions for water resource consent holders, there are Phase C restrictions in place for residents and public organisations on the Dovedale water supply. Businesses on the same supply are subject to Phase B restrictions. Please check the website for more details. Even if restrictions aren’t in place for you, now is the time when we all need to conserve water as much as possible. There’s lots you can do at home and at work to reduce your water use. Sport NZ Rural Travel Fund – apply now The Sport NZ Rural Travel Fund applications are now invited until 30 April. The Sport NZ Rural Travel Fund offers help with travel costs for rural sports clubs and rural school teams. The fund is to help young people aged from 5 to 19 participate in local sports competitions. Sport NZ fully funds the Rural Travel Fund, which Council administers locally on their behalf.
