Snowden’s smashes their target Jo Kent Reporter

In an unprecedented move, the Snowden’s Bush Trust have reached their final fundraising target of $350k, less than 24 hours after the Waimea Weekly ran their latest story on the campaign last week. “It’s no coincidence that every time the Waimea Weekly run a story about us, we get donations,” says Jeremy Cameron, Trust Chair. “But we never thought we’d get such a big amount to push us over the finish line this soon.” Just five weeks ago, the Trust still had to raise $47k, but after the Waimea Weekly ramped up the campaign boosting their public profile, the Trust are now celebrating the end of almost three years of fundraising. The project began in October 2018 when the Anglican Church proposed selling the land in front of Snowden’s Bush Reserve for housing development. Local resident Janice Gibbs set the ball rolling with the idea of fundraising enough money to buy the land and gift it back to the Department of Conservation, permanently protecting ancient Totara and Matai trees and expanding the Reserve to include the frontage along Waimea West Road. “We are more than thrilled that this piece of land will now stay in the public domain forever,” says Janice. “There

Little hands made light work of 2,500 bottle tops for Wakefield’s Little People Preschool school mural. Avery and Kyra Johnston (pictured) were some of the students who got involved in the art project. “One of our strong focuses in the school is caring for the environment, sea life and recycling,” says Maretta Burbidge, a preschool teacher. The mural is a culmination of that focus with the whole school community getting involved and collecting bottle tops. They started in March last year as part of sea week. The students helped plan, sort the tops and position them, and they used battery drills to screw the tops to the board. Producing the ‘Keep our sea plastic-free’ mural has been a great learning project, incorporating the importance of recycling and looking after the sea creatures by ensuring plastic is kept out of the ocean. The volunteers have worked tirelessly to make this happen and it’s hard to believe we are here already.” The significance of Snowden’s Bush is that it is the largest remnant of thousands of hectares of podocarp forest that once covered the Waimea Plains. The Snowden family privately protected the forest from logging in the nineteenth century and made it available for community events and picnics. It was purchased by the Waimea County Council after a public subscription campaign in 1920 and it became the Snowden’s Bush Reserve in March 1921.

The Tasman District Council has formally asked the Nelson City Council to double its contribution to the Waimea Community Dam project while awaiting payment of the first contribution. The total cost to the NCC is now $10.5 million. The original request of $5 million is yet to be received from the NCC. “NCC has a representative process they have to manage and we believe the payment is due to arrive in May,” says TDC Community Relations Manager Chris Choat. “Councillors passed a resolution at their meeting on the 25th February related to the latest cost overrun that included an agreement to approach NCC for an increased contribution ‘proportional to the increase in the dam’s estimated costs since their $5m grant was originally set.”

Lowering speed lowers injuries Jenny Nicholson Reporter

jenny@waimeaweekly.co.nz

Two years after the Appleby Highway speed limit was lowered from 100kmh to 80kmh, statistics show that there have been no fatalities and just one crash causing serious injury. “There have still been crashes but not with the level of harm we were seeing,” says Waka Kotahi Team Lead Safe Road Use Jessica Rattray. In 2017 two men were killed in a three-car crash on SH60 outside Bill Unwin’s driveway. He says it had quite an impact on him. “We contemplated selling be-

cause the road was just quite dangerous,” says Bill. At the time the speed limit on SH60 between McShane Road and Maisey Road was 100kmh. Over 2017 and 2018 there were four fatalities from three crashes, and four other serious crashes leaving 10 people with serious injuries. Tasman District Council’s Transport Manager Jaime MacPherson says a number of concerns were raised by the community at that time. “There was a high number of crashes proportional to a relatively short stretch of road,” says Jaime. He says the growing population was putting pressure on

intersections and it seemed the right time to have a conversation about safety. Jaime says since the introduction of the 80kmh limit in December 2018 both formal and informal conversations with people have been almost universally supportive of the reduction in speed. Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency says while the latest data on 20th March 2021 shows just one serious crash and no fatalities following the speed reduction, finalised data may take months to be released. Bill Unwin says it has now become quite a pleasure to drive in the area.

A different spin on funeral options Jacqui Rawson Reporter

jacqui@waimeaweekly.co.nz

Menzshed coordinator Alan Kissell presented builder Karl van Hoppe with an old rimu bed and a disused trailer and told him they’d been asked to build a hearse which could be towed by motorbike, tractor, classic or family car. “I’d just finished another project and Alan said to me, ‘Do you feel

like doing something different?’ I just thought, why not?” says Karl. The result is an alternative option for a funeral instead of a traditional hearse, and is the culmination of Menzshed team Alan, Karl, engineer Nevil Basalaj and other volunteers, who come up with interesting creations at people’s request, some of which can be quite out of left field. Alastair Hebberd, owner of Shone & Shirley Funeral Directors, contacted Menzshed with a request

for the project and supplied all the materials. “We wanted to provide an alternate option for the community,” says Alastair. He said it was his dad who came up with the concept for the special hearse when tossing around ideas for another option. The project happened over three months, but Karl estimates it was a couple of weeks of full-time work if you ran the days together. “We were given the materials and

told to go ahead and do what we could with them”, says Karl. “I’d never built a hearse before.” Karl got his design plan for the end product from a horse-drawn hearse that he had seen around Nelson Tasman. There’s also a motorbike elsewhere in New Zealand that uses its sidecar as a funeral hearse. The hearse’s rimu has been varnished to a high gloss and the design has incorporated a lot of glass for coffin and flower view-

ing. It also has rollers in the flooring in line with a modern traditional hearse. The original trailer was striped down and replaced with black steel panels and mag wheels. “The idea was to create a more personal hearse than the traditional ones,” says Alan. The hearse will be stored at the Shone & Shirley premises in Nelson. For more information, go to shoneandshirley.com or call 546 5700 24.

Three people were injured in a late morning crash on Redwood Road, Appleby, when a car crashed into a power pole. Two of those involved in the crash were transported by ambulance to Nelson Hospital in moderate conditions.

More Tasman residents will be able to access the First Home Grants and Loans from 1st April 2021 following yesterday’s announcement that the new property house price cap would increase from $550,000 to $600,000. Income caps to get financial assistance will be lifted from $85,000 to $95,000 for single buyers, and from $130,000 to $150,000 for two or more buyers.

Nelson Matters Labour and the Greens are making a shambles of transport policy in Nelson and nationally. Congestion is getting worse. Promised infrastructure is not being delivered. Basic services like driver licensing is failing. Nelson has just published its 10 year plan with no major transport NZTA projects for a decade. Fuel taxes and road user charges have been increased four times. The Government

now takes over $100 million a year from Nelson and Tasman but it is not being spent here. It is highway robbery! The Government has an ever growing list of broken transport promises. Jacinda Ardern’s first policy announcement on becoming Labour leader was light rail in Auckland saying it would be built and operating by 2021. It has not even started. She also promised Skypath, a walking

and cycling link attached to the Auckland Harbour Bridge, that has now been shown to be unsafe engineering. Labour in Election 2017 rejected Nationals commitment of $135 million for upgrading SH6 into Nelson saying there were better alternatives like moving the Port to Rabbit Island or putting a tunnel through the Port Hills. These are fanciful like Labour’s failed promise of 100,000

Kiwibuild homes. Green coleader James Shaw promised Nelson in 2017 $23 million for a Rocks Road walkway and cycleway. Nothing has happened and none of it is mentioned in the 10 year plan. The latest NZTA debacle is Nelsonians having to travel to Blenheim or Hokitika to do their practical driving test. Nelson driving instructors say the waits of more than three months are

the worst ever. I have had local young people in tears and others driving unlicensed. Labour and the Greens have spent big on changing the name of New Zealand Transport Agency to Waka Kotahi. The priority should be reducing congestion, building the promised infrastructure and doing the basics like driver licensing. Advert.

WINTER SPECIALS

Jacqui Rawson

This Friday apprentices across the region are going head-to-head in the inaugural Nelson Apprentice of the Year competition. The apprentices are representing hairdressing, engineering, and nursing. Contestants will complete a variety of challenges created by the organisers with the winner taking the title of Nelson Apprentice of the Year and $1000 in prize money. “The competition is a good opportunity to represent the nursing department and spread awareness of what nursing is about,” says nursing apprentice, Sam Clegg. He says nursing is a widely overlooked career especially with males with just four out of 93 nursing apprentices in Nelson Tasman. The businesses they work for will also win a $3000 NZME advertising package and the winner’s chosen charity will also benefit through a $500 donation. Since July 2020 over 100,000 students nationwide have begun Targeted Training Apprenticeship Fund (TTAF) programmes. NMIT has had over 1100 TTAF learners with more intakes coming. take in programmes from aquaculture, construction, horticulture, engineering, winemaking, and viticulture, automotive and IT. Hinerangi October is another local Tasman apprentice in the competition. Keeping takahē off extinction list Jacqui Rawson Reporter

jacqui@waimeaweekly.co.nz

Fifteen takahē birds were flown into the Kahurangi National Park last week as part of an ongoing programme to establish new populations in the wild. The birds travelled by Air New Zealand on a flight from Invercargill to Nelson as part of the airline’s partnership with DOC. “The 15 takahē joining the population are between one and two years old and, being younger, may adjust more readily to the new wild home, says DOC’s Takahē Recovery Programme operations manager, Deidre Vercoe. Thirty takahē were released by DOC in Kahurangi in 2018 but last year the population had a significant setback with 11 of them dying. Some due to natural causes. “It was a tough year for the Kahurangi takahē in 2020 and it was disappointing to lose 11 birds,” says Deidre. “The takahē that died from natural causes had low

body weights, suggesting they weren’t getting enough food during winter. They were older birds that may have struggled to adapt to a new environment. The 15 birds we’ve continued to monitor are younger and were a healthy weight when checked in September. “It’s challenging establishing new wild populations of a native species but ultimately the conservation goal is to return them to living naturally in the wild. What we learn from monitoring the wild takahē informs our selection of other sites for takahē and how we establish and manage wild populations.” The Takahē Recovery Team is continuing research into measures to reduce 1080 risk to takahē after three of the takahē deaths were caused by it following an aerial predator control operation. No rats or stoats have been detected which has helped protect other threatened species. Further aerial predator control is not expected to be needed in the area for several years.

Reaping awards six months on Jacqui Rawson A lockdown, pregnancy and the passing on of a grandmother weren’t enough to stop sisters from kick-starting their Richmond business and go on to win a nationwide award. Kelly and Jade Gosling were only six months into their business when they received the Kiwi Business Heroes award. “We feel truly humbled to have been placed runner-up, particularly in our first year of business as we are still finding our feet,” says Jade. The sisters had decided to open a business together utilising both of their skills; Kelly is an internationally qualified beauty therapist, and Jade has a commerce degree majoring in accounting and marketing. Their aim to open the Pure Indulgence Day Spa in March 2020 was bad timing

not our spirit or drive to succeed in our business,” says Kelly. The Kiwi Business Heroes award recognises the contribution a business makes daily to the Kiwi way of life. In giving back to the community Pure Indulgence staff provide regular beauty services to hospice patients. Delays in receiving equipment meant their opening had to be pushed back a month. Kelly and Jade were still paying staff wages although clients had to be rescheduled to the following month. Connection of the power, internet, and phone was also delayed, which hindered initial contact methods and bookings with clients. “We put all of the obstacles into learning curves that have actually pushed us to grow as both a team and business,” she says. “And as our mum always said, ‘if it’s easy, it’s not worth having.’”

Harcourts Richmond gave a cheque of $2,500 to John Armstrong, principal of Henley School, to assist with the ‘caterpillar’ court markings on the new artificial turf designed for the junior syndicate. The turf was laid in time for the start of Term 1 and has already proved a big hit with all the children. “It gives us an all-weather option for both older and younger kids,” says John. The Harcourts Foundation gives back to those affected by disasters, but they also give to charitable community organisations or to individuals in need. Residents pushing longer term solution Jacqui Rawson Reporter

jacqui@waimeaweekly.co.nz

Wakefield residents continue to highlight the need for a long-term solution for crossing safety on SH6 with a detailed proposal. While Wakefield waits on the shortterm outcome from the official NZTA Safety Audit residents have been doing their research to produce a nine-page proposal that goes beyond short-term upgrades. “We know changes will likely be minimal superficial upgrades coming out of the safety audit, as there is no budget currently allocated for anything like an underpass,” says community representative, Jenny Lines. A group of residents have been working over the last 12 months to highlight, to the TDC and NZTA, the urgency for improved pedestrian crossing options over SH6 Wakefield for the safety of the community.

“We strongly feel that there should be a focus on a long-term solution like building an underpass,” she says. The proposal produced by the group includes data on Wakefield’s traffic and community growth. Wakefield’s community has grown by 96 per cent in one generation and the traffic has grown by 116 per cent. Wakefield School has an active transport programme that since its inception has seen an increase in the number of students walking, cycling, or scootering to school. The majority of whom are on the opposite side of SH6 to the school. With the Ministry of Education currently looking into whether Wakefield School will move from being a contributing Primary School (years 0-6) to a full Primary (years 0-8) the outcome could have a direct impact on the numbers of students needing to cross the highway. The introduction of the Great Taste Cycle Trail has also had an impact on traffic in Wakefield.

John Whittal After 1877 life for the Rutherfords at Foxhill was settled and happy, but the 1880s signalled an economic depression ahead and shortly after James had his contract for supplying bridge and tunnel timbers for the railway cancelled. Realising that the 35 acres at Foxhill could not sustain a family of nine (soon to be 10) he looked about for other options. His brother John had a small flax mill at Brightwater and had heard of an abundance of flax in the Pelorus Valley so the two of them set off on horseback to investigate. Making enquiries at both Canvastown and Havelock they found everything to be favourable. Plenty of flax, running water, cheap vacant land, ex-gold miners seeking employment,

John’s industry knowledge and record prices being achieved for quality dressed flax, even a school for the children at Havelock. During the summer of 1882 John and James set about building the new flax mill, writing a weekly letter back to Martha with progress and asking her to prepare to move to Havelock. In August Martha gave birth to Percy as well as having eight other children to care for (Ellen, Alice, Ernest, James, Herbert, Charles, Florence and Ethel). Eldest son George was boarding at Nelson College. The children had their last day at Foxhill School on 5th April 1883 then they all boarded the paddle steamer at Nelson heading for Havelock. James had a house ready for the family not far from the wharf on the inside of the big bend (opposite Cook

However, a peaceful existence was not to be as a series of tragedies struck. During the winter of 1883, baby Percy died quite suddenly aged just one year and two days. He was buried in Plot 32 in the Havelock Cemetery. In 1885 Ernest sat his scholarship exams and failed, meaning an extra year for him at Havelock School. Early in 1886 two of Ernest’s younger brothers, Herbert and Charlie, drowned while out sailing in Pelorus Sound with a friend. The bodies were never found. Amidst all this, eldest child George ‘suddenly’ left Nelson College and was sent off to live and work on a farm in the North Island. Good news finally came to the family later that year when Ernest got to resit the scholarship exam, this time at

Havelock thanks to the efforts of headmaster Mr Reynolds. The inspector did the coach trip and Ernest was in familiar surroundings. Not only did Ernest pass this time but with the highest ever score (580 out of a possible 600) which brought much pleasure to the family, Mr Reynolds and the whole town. At the start of 1887 Ernest, now aged 14 years, started at Nelson College, and promptly moved into the 5th Form and the start of his outstanding academic career. However it was not long before the flax ran out and the family were forced to move again. This time to the North Island. The site of the Rutherford Flaxmill was on the main highway between Canvastown and Foxhill. Look for a roadside marker Ruapaka Culvert near an old one-way bridge and a small woodshed.

After a stroke, Rata Vivienne was unable to attend Sing Yourself Well classes at Age Concern but now she has her voice back. “The breathing exercises helped me so much. “Now I can sing,” says Rata, “but I still can’t whistle.” Rata has enjoyed singing all her life, having belonged to the Wakefield Players about 40 years ago and singing in the New Plymouth opera house too. She and sister, Joan Ewers, joined others for a sing in the park at Faulkners Bush. This was one of the summer events put on around the region by Age Concern. Sing Yourself Well meets every Tuesday morning at the Aged Concern Hall on Oxford Street. Run by Ruth Collingham, it is a social group who sing for health. Rata is thankful that Ruth runs the group which has helped her sing again. Joan Ewers, Maria Kula from Age Concern, Leigh and Carole Gamby, Anne Barr, and Rata Vivienne. Photo: Jenny Nicholson.

Strength in numbers

How we’re rolling out the COVID-19 vaccine We have secured enough doses of the Pfizer vaccine for everyone 16 years and over in Aotearoa. Any vaccine’s strength is in numbers. The more of us who get vaccinated, the stronger and safer we’ll all be. It will give us more freedom in our daily lives, and more options for our whānau, our businesses and our country. Because when we roll up our own sleeves, we’re helping to protect all of us. Here are the key facts about the Pfizer vaccine: It’s safe

It’s effective

It’s free

It has been approved by our own Medsafe experts. It’s also already been used successfully all around the world by millions of people, and by thousands here in New Zealand too.

The Pfizer vaccine is 95% effective when you receive both doses.

The vaccine will be free for everyone in the country. We have secured over 10 million doses of the Pfizer vaccine. That’s enough for all of New Zealand.

New Zealand’s vaccination rollout plan The rollout plan for the Pfizer vaccine is simple. Everyone in the country aged 16 and over falls into one of four groups. Firstly, we’ll protect those most at risk of picking up the virus in their workplaces – and then those most at risk of getting seriously ill or dying from COVID-19. NOW

FROM MARCH

FROM MAY

FROM JULY

Group 1

Group 2

Group 3

Group 4

Border and MIQ workers

Frontline workers and people in high-risk areas

65+ and people with underlying health conditions or disabilities

Everyone else aged 16 and over

More strength. More freedom. More options. We’ll let you know when it’s your turn for the vaccine. Until then, please keep using the NZ COVID Tracer app, and stay home if you’re sick.

Babyspace What advice do you have for parents looking for a centre? Quality early childhood education is closely linked to small group size, positive relationships between children and the adults in the centre, and a low turnover of staff. Parents who are looking for a small group environment with a high teacher/child ratio and a very special atmosphere are welcome to visit Lynda and the team at BabySpace or see the website at www.babyspacenelson.co.nz. How do you recommend settling children into an ECE setting? Here at BabySpace we believe that the time spent in teachers, children and families “getting to know each other” during the set-

tling in period is important for the child’s emotional safety and good relationships between families and teachers. Feeling safe is a prerequisite to learning and developing relationships. The process requires commitment from parents and teachers. We then have happy children and parents who trust the adults who are caring for their children. Short frequent visits are beneficial to start with, and the periods extending as the visits progress. When mutually agreed, the parents should leave for a short time. As the child becomes settled these visits will be longer with the parent able to leave for a longer time. There will be opportunities then for the regular caregiving practices such toileting, eating and sleeping to be established.

Carpet Plus Can you help with colour coordinating carpet, vinyl and curtains? Definitely. We find that once something is chosen, e.g., paint colour, kitchen colours, it’s generally simple from there! We really enjoy putting colours together that the customer will be happy with. Wool or synthetic carpet? It’s a very personal choice. Some people like the natural textured appearance of wool, while others like the easy care, long warranties of synthetics. What type of underlay should I have? We recommend NZ-made Dunlop under-

My zip isn’t working properly. Can you fix it? Yes, in many cases we can repair zips. If the zip is damaged, Richmond Sewing can replace it for you. We can replace zips in jeans, trousers, school skirts, dress, fleeces, puffer jackets and more. With the cooler temperatures in the mornings, now is a good time to check zips on your fleeces and jackets. The seam has ripped on my top and torn the fabric. Is there any way that it can be fixed? Absolutely. Richmond Sewing do a

Can it be made to fit me better? It sure can. The Richmond Sewing team can take in the shirt to achieve the fit you are wanting, whether it’s reducing the size or creating some shape. Thermal tends to be more cost effective, but there are more fabric choices if you go with a lined curtain. What is the difference between sun block and filter blinds? Sun filter allows you to see out while adding some privacy and a blockout completely darkens a room which can help with sleeping.

Simply Septic Is my septic tank full? If the tank looks full, and the scum level is getting close to the lid, it’s time for a clean. What clogs up a tank is the depth of the scum and sludge. The tank needs cleaning before this gets to a depth that it blocks the outlet. How often should I clean out my septic tank? This depends on the size of your tank, what is going into the system and the number of people living at the property. General rule is for three to four people, your tank should be cleaned every three years.

Why choose Simply Septic? Based in the Nelson & Richmond area, Simply Septic provides domestic and commercial liquid waste disposal, including septic tank cleaning, grease traps and more. Thanks for saving my life Sharon McDonald needed a team to save her life. On Wednesday she met people who were links in the chain of her survival. On November 5th 2017 she cardiac arrested at the start of a half marathon, collapsing just 100 metres from emergency medical technician Kylie Beckers. Craig Vercoe was on his way to start the run, saw Kylie was on her own so stopped and performed CPR, waiting until the ambulance arrived to leave and run his race. Sharon. On the way to hospital, she again cardiac arrested and paramedics AnneMarie Harris and Debbie Clark saved her life. This first meeting between Sharon and paramedics last week was special for all. Anne-Marie says it isn’t often she gets to meet people with such a great outcome and quality of life. In November 2018, Sharon and Craig lined up on the start line together and walked the half marathon that she hadn’t been able to complete the previous year.

Sage Landscapes create exceptional gardens Are you in the throes of building or renovating? Would you love to create some aesthetically pleasing outdoor spaces? Sage Landscapes is the company to call. The friendly, approachable landscaping business, which services the Nelson and Tasman area, is owned by Ollie Sage, who has a sharp eye for detail and more than a decade of experience under his belt. Ollie learnt his trade through Hillier Landscapes in England, where he worked on a range of projects from high-end small domestic gardens up to multi-million-pound contracts. In 2009, Ollie set up his own company ‘Sage Bros Landscapes’ which offered a quality residential design and build service to the Bristol region. This was a huge success, and his reputation grew. Ollie then emigrated to New Zealand in 2012, where he was offered a project management/foreman position for a high-end Nelson landscaping company. He enjoyed working closely with award-winning designer

James Wheatley on challenging projects from unique and complex water features to large formal rose gardens. Seeking independence again, in 2016, Ollie established Sage Landscapes and he’s delighted with how it has evolved over the last 5 years. “Creating exceptional gardens is our passion,” says Ollie. “By taking time to fully understand what a garden means to you, we aim to design and install a creative and robust garden that reflects you.” Sage Landscapes provide a wide range of landscaping services including garden design and planning, landscape instillation and constructions, soft landscaping and planting, and scheduled maintenance. “We can do everything from conceptual design to retaining walls, to feature patios and bespoke timber structures, to ponds and water features, to vegetable and flower bed generation. To enquire about any of Sage Landscape’s services, call Ollie on 022 122 5013.

Advancing their skills with Richmond Rotary Jacqui Rawson Four young adults are making inroads in their career development by attending various courses throughout New Zealand. Through the Rotary Club of Richmond sponsorships, two students from Waimea and Garin Colleges and two young engineers from Brightwater have had the opportunity to attend the courses. “We approach both local schools and businesses for nominations of young adults to go on courses through our sponsorship programme,” says Rotary Club of Richmond president, Debra Gibbs One of the courses, the Rotary Youth Leadership Award, is a week-long course for employees nominated by their

employers as having shown potential leadership skills and are involved in community projects. This year Kali Neame and Josh Grant, both junior engineers at Taylors Contracting Brightwater, were nominees who attended the course held in Christchurch. Year 12 Waimea College student, Oliver Clarke, thanks to his excellent grades in the sciences, attended the Rotary Science Forum held at Auckland University. The idea behind the forum is to demonstrate all the possible career paths open to attendees. The Rotary Club of Richmond also assisted Jacob Mason from Garin College to attend the challenging three-week Outward Bound course at Anakiwa by donating $500 to-

wards his expenses. “I would recommend doing this course 100 per cent, says Jacob. He says that a quote from a previous student ‘be comfortable with the uncomfortable’ was something that really resounded with him from the course. The Club, in their focus on assisting community activities and personal development, also provides three students each year with tertiary training assistance. The students must show an empathy for community activities but also have the commitment to engage in tertiary training. The scholarship goes towards the purchase of prescribed textbooks, special equipment, or as a contribution towards an electronic computing device.

Yummy an Easter egg, the thoughts rushed through my mind as my dear wife brought home a packet of those tasty marshmallow Easter eggs that she knows I so enjoy. These were even mint ones, but as I opened the packet, I pulled out not a whole egg but just a half egg. Seems like the manufacture has slimmed things down or should I say cut them in half completely. My mind quickly thought back to the days when we got both halves stuck together, and even had a different colour inside to resemble a yoke. Remember those Easter eggs? While I still enjoyed the treat of eating an Easter egg, (well more than one) I couldn’t help but think, what if we only knew part of the Easter story, or what if we didn’t know about Easter at all.

As a Pastor in a Christian church, I know that Easter is a special time on our calendar, not just because we may enjoy those chocolate Easter eggs or serve hot cross buns, but because, the real story behind Easter is the story of love, forgiveness, and hope. The Bible tells of a love story, how God loved us so much that He did not want any of us to perish so he sent His one and only Son as a sacrifice and redeemer so we may be forgiven and receive eternal life. While it is a love story, if you have followed the full bible account, or even seen the movie The Passion of Christ you will understand that Jesus’s journey to the cross was violent, painful and cruel, with Jesus being sinless, He was nailed to a cross. His final words, as Jesus took His final breath, “It is finished”,

not just His life, but the division of a sinful world and a God of love. That was not the end, as three days later Jesus rose from the dead, as was forecast years earlier. Jesus brings us hope and if we believe in Him, the promise of a new life. This is the reason why the cross has become the symbol of the Christian faith. This Easter when you get to enjoy an easter egg or hot cross bun, or even just enjoy an extra day off work, consider the question; What if God had intended more than just a good life for you... what if He intended a better life? Wouldn’t you want to know about it. This Easter, why not come and visit your local Christian church and find there is hope for each of us, through the love of Jesus.

Invite to rugby club’s 125th celebration weekend

125th Celebration Weekend Join us on the weekend of Queen’s birthday 2021 for a celebration of our 125th year register noW

www.sporty.co.nz/viewform/134761

Rugby was first introduced to Nelson by Charles John Monro in 1870. Twenty-six years later, in 1896, the Waimea Old Boys Rugby Football Club Inc was established. So, the club has very good reason to celebrate in 2021, and they are inviting people to join them on the weekend of Queen’s birthday to celebrate their 125th year. On the Friday night (4 June), the club has organised a ‘Meet and Greet’ for past and present players from 5pm, with nibbles provided and the bar will be open. “You can collect your rego’ pack from 5pm and enjoy catching up with old team-mates,” says Waimea Old Boys Rugby Football Club spokesperson, Wayne Oldham. “We’re hoping to have our Senior women’s team play with a couple of JAB teams at 6pm.” Then on the Saturday (5 June), the club will have its three men’s senior teams at home playing, with the B team & B Development team playing each other. “We’re hoping the Senior A Men’s team can retain the Noel Barton Cup in their match versus Nelson if it’s on the line.” In the evening, the club’s 125th dinner will take place at the Headingly Centre from 6.30pm. As well as a three-course meal, those attending will get to hear well-known Spark Sport/ TVNZ commentator, Scotty Stevenson. There will also be acknowledgements of life members and local players from the last 25 years.

People are invited to celebrate Waimea Old Boys Rugby Football Club Inc which has been around for 125 years. On Sunday (6 June) at midday, the organisers hope to hold the annual Kaka Shield fixture between Tapawera and Richmond. “It’s an over 35’s game where everyone gets out there in their gumboots and sneakers for bit of a laugh,” says Wayne. There will also be a JAB games on the day, a ‘Golden Oldies’ game, a spit roast meal and after match beverages. “There have been some good people involved over the years that have kept the club strong and it’s possibly now the largest club in the region,” says Wayne. You can register for the Waimea Old Boys Rugby Football Club 125th Celebration Weekend is due to be held on Queen’s Birthday weekend (4-6 June, 2021) at: www.sporty. co.nz/viewform/134761 or email waimeaold boysrugby@gmail.com or phone 0274817237 if you are having trouble registering. Jacob Mahood struck gold when he caught a 12 kg kingfish recently in Tasman Bay near Nelson as part of the Dawnbreakers 2021 Snapper Cup fishing competition. The 10-year-old used live mackerel for bait and a game rod and reel and won first prize in the Junior category for the heaviest kingfish. For his efforts he took home the top prize of a Daiwa Laguna Lt 3000 TD Hyper 7102 Rod. “The kingfish was so heavy my arms were stinging and I could barely lift the rod tip out of the water,” says Jacob. His little brother, 7-year-old Ethan, also caught a decent-sized snapper. Photo: Supplied.

A good Stoke team too strong The Taylor Wanderers-Motueka Premier T20 cricket team ended the season at Marsden Rec on Saturday, well defeated by the unbeaten Stoke-Nayland side. Stoke-Nayland batted first and on the back of an excellent knock by Josh Smith, scoring 72 off 45 balls, ably supported by Chris Dittmer with 40, amassed 200/6 from their 20 overs. Hayden Ingham led his bowlers well snaring four wickets from his four overs, conceding 24 runs in the process. Unfortunately, Shubham Sharma was the only other successful bowler, taking 2/15 off his two overs. The run chase was beyond Wanderers-Motueka on the day, with wickets falling at regular intervals, at one stage 16/4, and although Ingham starred again with the bat contributing 31 runs off 16 balls before holing out on the boundary, the visitors were dismissed for 83 in the 17th over and resounding victory for Stoke-Nayland. In an exhibition belying his seniority, but emphasising his contribution to the match, Hayden Ingham secured the MVP by almost 5 full points over all other players, which was a fitting reward for “Gings” leadership and enthusiasm both in this game but also throughout the season. The Wanderers-Motueka side has progressed from last season and signs are good for continuity with both clubs experiencing a growth in participation at teenage level. The challenge is to retain and promote the youth, while addressing the loss of players leaving for tertiary education, a common problem to all Nelson cricket clubs.

The days are getting shorter and the water temperature has dropped but the fishing gets hotter every week. Hundreds of snapper get caught every day, along with plenty of gurnard, kahawai, kingfish and trevally. Almost every spot from the shallows to the 40m mark provides great fishing at the moment and the key factor for success appears to be a good burley trail. These were fantastic conditions for the Dawnbreakers Fishing Club’s annual Snapper Cup which was held on March 13th – one week delayed for Covid reasons. Thanks to our most generous sponsors – the main sponsors this year were Hunting & Fishing Nelson and Furuno – there were over $20,000 worth of prizes to be won which attracted almost 200 competitors! The weather was good and obviously the fish were hungry

because the Club members brought over 300 fish to the weigh in! After a delicious dinner and a few cold ones at the packed Old Boys Rugby Club in Richmond it was time for the prize giving. Despite some microphone troubles Murray Leaning did a fantastic job as MC and together with the sponsors and committee members he handed out dozens of prizes. The main ones went to Shania Greaney who won the junior heaviest snapper category (7.3kg), Jonny Claridge - adult heaviest Snapper (8.5kg) and Sue Hawkins - average weight snapper (2.88kg). Have a look on our facebook site for more results and photos! A big thanks to all our other sponsors as well (again, have a look on our website and on facebook!) and especially to our committee members who put in countless hours of work to make the Snapper Cup such a fantastic event. Tight lines!

Oxford Bayley (Nelson College), Alec Swan (Nayland College) and Abbey Smale (Garin College) dominated the national secondary schools open water 3.5 km championships at the Blue Lake in Rotorua last weekend. Photo: Peter Gibbs.

Sudoku 444 Hard Easy

For the second time this summer a swimmer from further back in the field came through to surprise the leaders with the fastest time in the national Banana Boat Ocean Swim Series. Bronson Lloyd started in wave two, 45 seconds behind the first wave, in the 3.5km Legends of the Lake swim in Lake Tikitapu - the Blue Lake - on Saturday. During the race, he swam through the field to join Nelson swimmers Oxford Bayley and Alec Swan in the lead. Swan made it to the line three seconds ahead of Lloyd, but on corrected time the Waikanae swimmer took first place in 39 minutes and 38 seconds. Swan recorded 40min 20sec. In the meantime, Bayley had taken the wrong side of the final yellow buoy and had to return to correct this, finishing third in 40min 45sec. In the women’s field, Abbey Smale continued her regal procession of wins, which now extends over nine Banana Boat swims. It was one of the Nelson

swimmer’s narrowest wins over the past two seasons, with Talitha McEwan of Papamoa finishing 12 seconds behind and Sarah Cummings of Tauranga a further 26 seconds behind. The Rotorua race doubled as the New Zealand Secondary Schools Open Water 3.5km championships, with Swan (Nayland College), Bayley (Nelson College) and Eligh Ashby (Wellington College) winning M16-19. Smale (Garin College), McEwan (Mt Maunganui College) and Cummings (Tauranga Girls’ College) took the F16-19 placings. In the older age group results, four Nelson swimmers were on the podium. Fraser Neill took gold in M25-29, while his father Hamish was the winner in M5559. One of Nelson’s most durable and successful swimmers Christina Harris triumphed against stiff opposition in F55-59. Derek Eaton has more than 60 medals in the national series after more than a decade of competition. The 79-year-old added to his collection with silver in M75-79.

Here are the key changes you’ll see happening on the ground: • Vehicle access to Elizabeth Street will be closed to vehicles at the Talbot Street intersection. This trial closure will begin on 6 April, following Easter weekend. • Drop-off parking spaces will be created at the Kindergarten (corner of Florence and Elizabeth Streets). • Florence Street will be narrowed to one lane for a short section between Herbert Street and Fauchelle Avenue to encourage slower speeds and road sharing. • New seating and trees will be added to Burbush Park on Fauchelle Avenue. • A pedestrian refuge will be installed on Talbot Street to make it safer to cross one lane at a time. • Speed humps will be installed on D’Arcy, Croucher, Elizabeth and Herbert Streets. The trial changes are a result of traffic monitoring in the area and discussions held with residents in late 2020. They’ll be in place until at least July and we will be seeking feedback from the community to see if the changes achieve what they were designed to. If that’s the case, we could discuss making permanent changes.
