“I’ve actually seen some penguins, last year by 623 in Tahuna. I thought it was weird at the time, I had only seen them by Cable Bay before that.”

“I’ve only seen penguins in the Antarctic Centre in Christchurch. That’s really weird, you don’t get penguins in Nelson.”

“I’ve seen them before but not here. Not in this region. Only down south. It must be the food they’re after.”

“I haven’t seen any penguins here before. It wasn’t someone dressed up was it? That is very strange.”

NEWS IN BRIEF Central businesses set to inject colour to CBD • Nelson man and long time Table Tennis coach and administrator Bryan Keane has been charged with two sex offences, which relate to separate historical incidents. One of which occurred on or about 1987 and the other in 1997/98. Keane did not apply for name suppression when he appeared in the Nelson District Court on Tuesday 17 May. Keane was charged with Indecent Assault on a Male and Unlawful Sexual Connection. The victims were both teenagers. Nelson Police say their inquiries are not complete and they would like to hear from anyone who has information relating to Keane, by calling Detective Neil Kitchen at 546 3851. All calls will be treated in confidence.

Central Nelson businesses will be getting a head start in welcoming thousands of overseas tourists to the city by taking part in a ‘100 days to go’ celebrations in June. Nelson City Council is helping businesses get in the mood for Rugby World Cup, by splitting the CBD into quadrants with each adopting one of the four teams to play in Nelson this coming September and October. Businesses are encouraged to dress their windows and be in with a chance to win a “significant” prize, says Susan Coleman, RWC 2011 Nelson Regional Director. “This is a great opportunity for businesses to start getting excited about the Rugby World Cup. Health board keeps eye on the prize Nelson Marlborough District Health Board says it will continue to search for cost savings, despite a recent increase to its budget. The DHB has achieved savings of around $7 million since it implemented the Rutherford Initiative two years ago and general manager for corporate services, Nick Lanigan says it will continue to examine its expenditure. The comments came after last week’s budget announcement by finance minister Bill English, which included a boost to funding for the health sector. Nick says the DHB is grateful for the funding but still needs to “break even”. In 2010 there were 17,075 admissions to Nelson Hospital, with 25,383 emergency department visits, 10,099 theatre procedures, 216,070 meals provided and 985 births. DHB will still need to maintain tight control over expenditure, says Nick. “The DHB’s Rutherford Initiative continues to look at ways of working smarter to make sure that we get the best value for every health dollar we spend and we continue to examine areas of significant expenditure in the hospitals and wider DHB.” Nick says the challenge is to keep savings on a par with the increases in expenses like fuel, medical devices and wages. Last year the DHB received $370m from the Ministry of Health, to provide health services for 135,000 people in Nelson and Marlborough. One down, 20 Summit Challenge under way FROM PAGE 1 Nelsonians started birthday celebrations for the Summit Rescue Helicopter one step at a time on Sunday, as hundreds took part in the first climb of the 20 Summit Challenge. The Challenge is to help celebrate the rescue helicopter’s 20th birthday in the region and gives locals the opportunity to complete one, or all, of the challenges to help celebrate with the helicopter trust. Sunday’s climb up the Centre of New Zealand was the first of the climbs and raised $754 dollars from gold coin donations. More than 270 children from 13 different schools took part in the WHK-sponsored climb with Central School and Hampden St School going head to head for the biggest involvement by one school. With 32 percent of its students climbing the hill, Central School won a $2000 sports equipment prize.

Marketing manager for the trust, Paula Muddle says she was happy with the big turnout. “Thanks to everyone who came – it was such a wonderful sight to see hundreds of people walking up the Centre of New Zealand. There was such a buzz at the top, with Mako players signing climber’s certificates and families having picnics. It was fantastic. “It was also great to see four children from one family travel from Tapawera to join us, saying they were really keen to do as many as possible.” Spot prizes won included how far travelled, the biggest family, the dog who looked most like the mayor and other random giveaways. Next week multisport stars Richard and Elina Ussher are racing a Westpac relay team to the top of Grampians. If you’d like to go on the walk, meet at Hampden St School top courts for a 2pm start to walk the Grampians.

Raising $20,000 for an expressing room at the new Ronald McDonald House in Wellington is not enough for the Lioness Club of Nelson – they want to fit it out too. The club has taken on a three year commitment to raise the money for a purpose-built expressing room for breastfeeding mothers staying in Wellington’s new Ronald McDonald House who need to collect breast milk for their premature or seriously ill babies. Nelson families are the

third highest users of the neonatal facilities at Wellington Regional Hospital and the Ronald McDonald House accommodation opposite the hospital. Since July 2010, the club has raised $16,000 through different fundraising events such as its annual pre-Christmas fair, truffle making, a wine tasting evening, children’s entertainment at Tahuna Beach Holiday Park and a fashion parade. Planning is already under way for its next fundraiser that will

be along the lines of a women’s DIY evening in partnership with Resene Paints Nelson and will be held in August. But raising the committed $20,000 will not be enough says club president Jillian Jary, they want to raise even more and furnish the room too, and will now be aiming to raise $30,000. “Having a seriously ill baby is a worrisome, scary and stressful experience for mothers. Nelson Lionesses want to ensure there are resources to support those families.”

Penguins make home near Quay Two Little Blue Penguins seemed to be keen for a night on the town on Saturday night, venturing into Wakefield Quay. The two penguins were spotted on Rocks Rd, outside the waterfront apartments, around 10pm by a Nelson Weekly reader, who posted the photograph of them on the Weekly’s Facebook page. Department of Conservation bio diversity manager Gavin Udy says the penguins live right around the Tasman Bay coast but it is unusual for them to come ashore at this time

of year. “Normally, if they were to come onshore it would be later in the year when they breeding.” He says efforts were made several years ago to re-establish the penguins in Nelson Haven and he is happy to see them in the area as they are in decline nationally. “Nest boxes were put near that area in the hope that they would keep coming back and it’s definitely great to see them around.” Gavin says the penguins should be left alone unless they injured, then people should contact DOC.

OUTTA HERE: Nelson area commander, Inspector Brian McGurk is heading to Afghanistan for six months this September. Photo: Andrew Board.

Police chief off to Afghanistan While visiting his son in the United States earlier this month, Nelson area police chief Brian McGurk watched with the rest of the world as Barak Obama announced the death of Osama Bin Laden and subsequent predictions about increased security risks in the area. The next day an email arrived asking him to go to Afghanistan. “It was still all rather contemporary [the Bin Laden death], but I still said yes,” he says. Brian applied for overseas deployment and he was picked to serve as contingent commander in Bamyan Province, the same province where New Zealand solider Tim O’Donnell was killed last year. The role will see him in charge of a small unit involving police officers from New Zealand, Ireland and Finland. The officers are there to help train the local police force and introduce modern police ideas like investigative techniques and community polic-

ing. Brian says it’s an experience he is looking forward to. “It will be like nothing else I’ve ever done. But it’s relativity safe and we are there with the New Zealand defence force. It’s a rare and unique opportunity, so I’m getting used to the idea and looking forward to it.” Before he leaves in September, Brian will undergo a series of training and tests, including flying to Afghanistan in early June for two weeks. “It will be good, I’ll be able to see what’s there and I’ll meet the current contingent commander and see what the role will be like.” The unit is part of the European Union police mission to Afghanistan. Brian says the most worrisome part of the experience will be the extreme cold during the winter, where the temperature can drop to minus 30 degrees Celsius. “I think I’ll miss my own bed by the end of it,” he jokes. Brian leaves for his first round of training next week.

A: Be prepared to pay the debt if you decide to be a guarantor. If you haven’t got the money, how will you pay the debt back if they stop paying? If you decide to guarantee the loan against your house or property:  Get legal advice  Make sure there is an upper limit to the amount to pay back or you could lose your house  Ask for statements to be sent to you, so if they get behind in payments you can act quickly to minimise penalties. If you have the money available consider lending your son and his wife money directly. Remember to get them to sign a loan agreement with you before they borrow the money, with clear expectations on interest rate, and repayment amount and frequency. You could say no to being a guarantor and be a supportive parent in other ways.

Students pass emergency test Riding the school bus just got a whole lot more interesting for a group of Nelson students. Children from the Nelson Christian Academy have been learning what to do if their bus driver was to have an accident, like a heart attack. The students have been learning how to turn off the engine, pull the hand brake and get out of the bus, with older students even taking a roll to make sure everyone is off safely. Students were put to the test last Friday when constable Evan Garland paid a visit and asked them perform the drill. He was thrilled with the outcome: “Spot on, they did a great job, they got everyone out safely and really quickly.” The idea to educate students on what to do came after several bus accidents in the North Island involving school children. School deputy principal Russell Harris says the students have taken to the new safety excersise with the older students taking the responsibility very seriously.

Hope’s a winner with Heritage Week

Hope Hellesoe couldn’t stop screaming when the phone rung saying she had won a brand new bike. “Oh my god, I was so happy,” she says. Hope, with her grandpa’s help, won a quiz held during Heritage Week. The Stewarts Cycle Centre bike was the first “big thing” she had ever won, the last prize being a Barbie DVD. Hope says she will use the new bike to get to Broadgreen Intermediate School in the mornings. The enteries for the quiz included 95 participants, with the majority coming from the Stoke region. Nelson City Council Arts and Heritage Advisor Debbie DaniellSmith says it was “great” that families are getting involved and doing the quiz together. “Heritage is about our collective family stories,” she says. Other winners include; Amy Swanson, 10, who won shoes from Shoe Clinic. And ten trip swim passes to Riverside Pool were BIKE WINNER: Hope Hellesoe, 12, with the bike she won from Heritage week. Photo: Phillip Rollo. also won from the quiz.

Thinking of going into business but don’t know where to start? Own a business but want help taking it to the next level? It can seem like a big ask, but there is one local training centre that has the answers and best of all, has them for free or at heavily subsidised rates – and available to most employees and businesses. Barbican Training Centre is a specialist business training organisation with a range of trainers that inspire, teach and inform – all from their newly renovated and funky training centre in Stoke. Founder Susan Piket returned to her hometown in Nelson and founded Barbican in 2003. With a staff of three, it has made a name for itself providing NZQA approved business programmes across the Nelson-Marlborough-Kaikoura region. In 2010, Barbican became an approved training provider of the NZTE Capability Devel-

opment Scheme offering 50 percent discounted short, high impact training for local businesses. Susan says “our clients have been asking us for short workshops and it’s great we can finally provide these at very affordable rates.” Workshops cover a range of topics from planning, marketing, managing and leading staff, setting up business systems to social media. Barbican is the place where businesses come to train managers, owners and staff in business management skills. With some 25 years commercial experience locally and internationally, Susan says, “we can take you from “wo to go” to setting up a business or taking your business to the next level. The beauty of our programmes is that they are practical – you work on your business; they are accessible – with free and subsidised rates; and at a time that suits business

They design, manufacture and install kitchens, wall units, vanities, wardrobes, cabinets, bars, entertainment units, shop fittings and much more to individual requirements. They can also do alterations to existing kitchens or a complete makeover. Robert says he enjoys working with clients through the entire process. “Because we are just a small team we are able to offer personal service and deal with the customer from sitting down to talking through what they want, to sketching the design, making the plan then loading it onto our 3D programme so the customer can see it from all angles.” By using quality material and high end technology, including a unique system from North America, which makes them to be competitive with kit set companies and complete your piece with speed and efficiently, says Robert. Robert has over 25 years experience in the industry and has also completed a European Antiques Restoration apprenticeship in Europe. Another specialty is their antique restoration. “If someone has a piece of furniture that has sentimental value or is an antique that needs attention we can bring it back to life” Robert and Tamas invite you to bring your ideas to them, or pop in for a chat for their professional opinion.

Johnny hoping to pen another chapter to incredible sporting story Phillip Rollo There’s not much Johnny Gbenda Charles can’t do. The Wakatu Marist utility has represented three different countries in a globe-trotting sporting career packed with versatility. He has represented the New Zealand secondary school football team, had a two year spell with the academy of Crystal Palace, had trials with English Premier League club Fulham, played international football for Sierra Leone, trained and captained the Hong Kong rugby sevens team, trained the Samoan national rugby sevens team, played both professional football and rugby in Hong Kong, worked with Adidas icon David Beckham and he has even survived a serious car accident which nearly ended it all. But there’s one thing which has always been out of his reach - winning the Car Company Nelson first division. “I’ve got some unfinished business to do,” says Johnny. The utility has been playing halfback for Marist in the absence of Bryce Bird, and is an important figure in the table topping side’s potent back-line. Primarily a winger, Johnny is the master of versatility and is confident that this is Marist’s year. Born in Sierra Leone to local father and Kiwi mother, Johnny moved to Wellington as an eight year-old. He played only played rugby until the first XI coach nabbed him for a tour of Argentina. He was hooked. He even went on to make Wellington rep teams and the New Zealand Secondary Schools team, which earned him a football scholarship to Nelson College as a boarder in year 12. He also played national league for the Steve Bignall-coached Nelson Suburbs. After playing football for only a couple of years, Johnny found himself riding a wave of success. He took off on a gap scholarship to the UK, trialling for as many professional clubs as he could. The academy of Crystal Palace were keen on the 18 year-old striker. With two years of youth and reserve grade football, every-

thing seemed to be paving a pathway to success for someone so new to the sport. Until it took a sudden jolt when he was hit by a car, fracturing his scull and both knees. He was in a coma. “I thought ‘here’s my dream gone.’ It wasn’t so much the accident but the fact it put me so far behind. Psychologically, being away from home, no secure contract. That kind of killed any aspirations I had at Crystal Palace.” Johnny returned to Wellington to have his daughter and to get his body fit for another crack at professional football later in the year. Johnny flew to London to trial with Premiership side

Fulham. But within two weeks of training he knew he was “too far behind.” He had the speed and fitness, but not the technical ability his counterparts possessed. He resorted to New Zealand and began studying diplomas in exercise science and fitness and playing club rugby on the weekends. Before the journey took another twist, when the opportunity arose to play professional rugby in Hong Kong. Johnny had also been working as a marketer for Adidas where he got to meet some of the world’s top sports stars including Tyson Gay. Johnny picked up work as a trainer for the Samoan national rugby sevens team and spent three years in Hong Kong, amassing the sufficient time to represent his adopted country in sevens. His biggest highlight in the sport came at the 2009 Rugby Sevens World Cup in Dubai where the team led England 7-0 at halftime in front of a 55,000 capacity stadium tailor-made for the event. He was named captain during the tournament, a proud moment despite representing another country in sport. “I was so proud of it because it was like a snapshot of that moment in time.” But football had never been thrown away. In fact, Johnny was still playing professional football in Hong Kong and for the Sierra Leone national football team - which included Inter Milan’s Mohammed Kallon - while playing rugby sevens for Hong Kong. “It would be the closest you’d get to representing the All Blacks. It’s on that same scale. There is no other sport. There’s extreme poverty, there’s high unemployment rate. So you go to training and there would be no grass, just dust piles. But it would be the best pitch and someone would have spent all day manicuring it. They would be so proud of that dust pile. There would be 30,000 people just watching training.” And Johnny hasn’t put away the shin pads yet. He will play for Richmond Athletic after what he hopes will be a championship winning season with Marist. But his plans for 2012 are undecided.

Nelson College retain unbeaten record Nelson College for Girls A retained their top seeding in Grade 1, ahead of Wanderers Taylor A on goal differential, after they defeated Richmond Wakatu Hotel B 28–22. With Andrea Reidie now at the helm of the college team, she could be well pleased at her charges first half performance. However they did lift their foot in the second stanza when they were outscored. Nelson College hustled for every bit of possession with defender Caroline Fergusson gaining numerous deflections. However the conversion rate for turnovers could have been greater had possession been treasured. Centre, Ruth Swaney put in some precision feeds to her shooters while picking up some great ball around the defensive circle edge. Ruth’s work rate is evidence of her recent selection in the Tasman Under 19 Squad. Attacker Rosa Edwards gained some great tip ball on defence and with a slight adjustment to her timing will pull in the intercept. Rosa moved to goal attack in the second half and displayed a nice understanding with Ruth to convert eight from eleven. Richmond’s shooter, Janelle Strickland had a fair height advantage over Nelson’s Rebecca Reidie however Rebecca positioned herself well for the rebound as well as gaining a fair amount of tip ball. The Grade 2 encounter between Stoke Richards Woodhouse and Waimea College B was a case of missed opportunities as neither team’s shooters had their radar switched on. Although Waimea did not relinquish the lead and went on to win 31–26, it was by no means a convincing performance. Stoke’s centre Kat Soper worked tirelessly to direct play through court while Tessa Hancock looked sharp on the long feed. Mackenzie Archibald put in a solid performance – firstly at goal attack before moving to the wing in the second half. Bobbie Hutton’s introduction at goal shoot increased the conversion rate while keeper Tania Stringer had a tidy game.

For Nelson Prep Gold, in Junior 1, it was a case of so, so close when they led for the majority of the game only to loose 16–19 to Waimea Intermediate 8B in the final minutes. Prep’s Olivia Denis made a sizeable contribution at goal defence in the first half with three well timed intercepts as well as three rebounds. Lilli Wilkinson had a great three quarters in the mid court where she linked well, however she also impressed in the unaccustomed position of goal defence. Charlotte Handforth excelled at wing defence and pulled in an astonishing amount of ball. Pip Dwyer was the dominant shooter and adjusted her play to work good lines through court while mid courter, Emily Mills was steady throughout.

EYE ON WORLD CUP: Nelson footballer Jamie Doris is back home after a season playing in Scotland for Hibernian. He is a member of the NZ squad which has qualified for the U20 World Cup. Photo: Phillip Rollo.

Jamie Doris is hoping the FIFA under-20 World Cup will be his lucky break. But it was an unlucky break midway through last year that nearly ended his chances of making the world’s most scouted football tournament at all. The Hibernian under-19 youth team center midfielder broke his leg in training in August, just one game into the Scottish football season. The injury was serious enough to see the former Nayland College star miss seven months and put his continued dream of representing New Zealand at another World Cup in jeopardy. “I got up and tried to walk on it. You couldn’t tell by looking at it, but I knew I had done something serious,” Jamie says. “It was just a freak accident. No intent from the other guy. It was just unlucky really.” His time on the sideline was difficult. Jamie still had to spend every weekday at training, watching from the physiotherapists room. “When they played on the weekend was an absolute nightmare.” However, he says he owes his current form and fitness to the medical staff at the North Edinburgh club as they did their best to enable his right fibula was strong and raring to go at the under-20 Oceania Football Championship, a tournament which doubled as a qualifier for the World Cup in Colombia. Despite playing on a bit part in the

tournament, coming on against New Caledonia, New Zealand qualified and the 18 year-old was grateful that New Zealand under-20 coach Chris Milicich gave him a chance, selecting him for the squad after only playing six games for Hibernian under-19s since returning to full fitness. The Junior All Whites recently competed at the Suwon Cup in South Korea picking up an historic win over African champions Nigeria 4-3. There is another invitation on the table for New Zealand to play at a tournament prior to the World Cup in July. Jamie hopes to use the opportunity as another chance to impress for one of the final 21 spots in the World Cup squad. “It’s what you play for. It’s what you dream of.” He comes off contract with Hibernian in June 2012. Although the World Cup is the most scouted tournament on the planet, he would “love” to keep plying his trade at the Scottish club and is aiming for a contract extension and a league title next season. “Because it’s your job, there’s a lot more at stake. You’re always getting judged. You’re playing to earn your living. The money is nothing like anything the English Premier League players are on, but it’s something. You’re playing the sport you love, everything else is a bonus to be honest.” Jamie is back in Nelson for the next three weeks.

Last minute try denies Stoke a perfect weekend Accesman Stoke were on fire over the weekend, winning three of its four senior games, with a fourth win snatched in the last minute. Stoke Women’s team had another good win on Saturday at Ngawhatu with a 51-10 thrashing of Wakatu Marist. Stoke started off slow with the Marist defence working brilliant. But as Stoke added more pressure to the Marist forwards, they were finally able to crack the try line and score the first of four tries in the first half of the game. Marist took any opportunity they got and scored once in the first half. The second half turned into a bit of a try fest for Stoke thanks to stand out player Sallyanne Archibald, who read the game well. Stoke went on to score five more times in the second half. Players of the day were Holly Fry and Lucy Higgins.

skilled Stu Tunnicliffe. Stoke scored seven tries, three to Sione Holani, one each to Lucas Bennett, Tevita Koloamatangi, Maki Fonati and Shaun Begg. Shaun also added four conversions to make the full time score Stoke 43, Riwaka 28. The Stoke division two side hung on for an important 32-28 win against Riwaka to get the season back on track. Riwaka led from the beginning, scoring a couple of tries in the first half, leading 13–3 at one stage. But a try to impressive flanker Luke Bartlett before the half time break lifted moral and the Stoke team went into the second spell with a positive outlook. The two teams were relatively even in the second half, trading tries. But with two minutes to go Brett Dickens scorched down the pitch to score a great try in the corner to give Stoke the lead. Riwaka had the opportunity to come back in the last two minutes however the Stoke defence stood up to the onslaught. Stoke received a maximum five points for the game. Try scorers were Luke Bartlett, Jacob Curtis, Daniel Shand, Sami Sami and Brett Dickens.

A more focussed and enthusiastic Stoke division one side travelled to Riwaka on Saturday, picking up a big win on the road. Early domination by Stoke set the ground work for the match and led throughout the 80 minutes. The win was classic Stoke – dominant physically and mentally, and with Division two player Daniel A last minute try by skilled players through Shand, in action on Saturday.
