Hone: Attack has made me even stronger Lewis Stanton says he hasn’t decided if he will go back to sleeping outside the council building after a chemical attack left him hospitalised last Wednesday morning – but he says the attack has made him stronger. Lewis, also known as Hone Ma Heke, was admitted to Nelson Hospital last Wednesday with solvent burns to his mouth and throat, after the attack at around 6.45 in the morning. He has been sleeping outside the council’s Trafalgar St offices as part of a protest since his belongings were seized from outside the Nelson District Court on June 13. Lewis says he was woken by the attacker after feeling something wet drop onto his head. He did not know the attacker, who ran off when Lewis woke up. “It certainly woke me up. There was just the one of them and he didn’t say anything. He poured something into my mouth and then ran off. “All I felt was a drop on my head and I knew it wasn’t rain because I was sheltered, and I opened my

eyes and there he was scarpering. And then when I put legs out of bed I was breathing in fumes,” he says. Lewis says he has been given temporary accommodation for a week following his release from hospital, and although he is back outside the Farmers building during the day, he is yet to make a decision on where he will sleep at night. “I do have somebody who has been generous enough to pay for somewhere for me to have a safe place for a week,” he says. “At the end of the day, a week is only a week and I shouldn’t have to be [taken in], just in the same

way that I shouldn’t have to be out here doing what I’m doing.” Lewis is no stranger to attacks. He says he encounters verbal abuse daily and has previously had a Molotov cocktail thrown at him, been burned with lighters and had a business owner try and reverse a car over him. Messages of support have come to Lewis both from people on the street passing by and comments online. “It’s good to hear from people online that have stated [even though they] can’t stand me, what happened should never have happened,” he says. “It’s good to hear people like that coming out and saying it.” He says the attack has made him even stronger. “It has made me scared for a bit but it has also strengthened me. There’s a meaning for me being

The truth is the greatest religion there can ever be.”

Lewis did not want to comment in depth about the man who attacked him but says it was “brilliant” police had arrested a man in connection with the assault.

Three separate collections of salt and pepper shakers, totalling around 800 sets, will go under the hammer this weekend in what is thought to be one of the largest auctions of its kind. The first collection of around 450 shakers was given to Libscombes Auction House about two months ago from a deceased estate. Then two weeks ago another collection of 340 was brought in and just last week another collector dropped off another 50. Libscombes co-owner Eleanor Davidson says they’ve been astounded by the amount and detail of the shakers. “It’s been quite intriguing and a lot of fun. In a way, we’d like to leave them on display for several weeks so

people can have a look at them.” The second collection up for auction was owned by Stoke’s Olive Jackson. She says Nelson had its own salt and pepper shaker club around 30 years ago. “Both my husband and I belonged to it and there were clubs all around New Zealand, so whenever we’d go on holiday we would go to a club meeting and see if there were any there we’d like to buy.” Olive says she decided to sell the shakers because she’s 90 years old and “as you get older there are things you can get rid of ”. The shakers will be sold in lots of around 30-40 shakers and will go under the hammer at the Antique, Collectable Art Auction this Saturday, August 29 at 11am, at Libscombes Auction House on New St.

Photo: Simon Bloomberg. to 80km, and then slow down again in a hurry, it will cause more accidents. “If anything, it will cause more problems,” he says. “I just keep ticking along at 50km, but not everyone will be sensible.” The council’s works and infrastructure committee chairman, Eric Davy, says the reason the small stretch of road has been left at 80km is because it’s not part of the “affected” area. “We did discuss it, but we are bound by certain legal restrictions and can only place a temporary speed limit in the problem area,” he explains.

“I can’t see it causing any accidents.” He says that he can see how it would be confusing for drivers, but emphasises that it is just a temporary measure. “Once the intersection has been upgraded then the whole area will go back up to 80km again,” he explains. Alec Louverdis, group manager of infrastructure at the council, says that plans to make changes to the intersection are still in the early stages and the design work is yet to be completed. It is hoped the work will be carried out within this financial year.

Kate Russell A temporary speed limit of 50km on Main Road Stoke has left some Nelson residents confused, with a small stretch of the road staying at 80km. The speed limit was lowered from 80km to 50km around the entrance to Wakatu Estate earlier this month, after an accident at the intersection in May prompted the Nelson City Council to complete a crash reduction study. A motorcyclist was also injured in a crash at the intersection in July. But one small stretch of the road leading into the Salisbury Rd roundabout has been left at 80km, and one local resident, Wayne Sellers, has expressed confusion to the Nelson Weekly, asking why the council hasn’t made it all 50km. “It’s only about a 400m section of road, so by the time you get up to 80km you have to slow back down to 50km again as you approach the roundabout,” he says. “You don’t gain anything, and it’s not saving any time.” Wayne is also concerned that if drivers try to speed up quickly

Man shot by police in Motueka: A man wanted over a parole breach was shot by police in Motueka on Thursday afternoon. Ford William Hurinui, 27, is in a critical condition after a confrontation with police on Wharepapa Grove. Hurinui, who was wanted for breaching his parole conditions, was found by police and a short pursuit ensued through residential streets of Motueka. Police allege Hurinui got out and aimed a gun at police officers, who attempted to negotiate with him. He then attempted to flee on foot, but was pursued by police. Police called on the man to surrender, but he failed to do so and once again aimed a gun at police and was then shot. Police are seeking a second man, Jahdai Brice Kennard, and have called on him to contact police.

Cliff repair enters next stage for November completion: Work continues on the Rocks Rd cliff face as specialist abseilers begin laying 1400 square metres of steel mesh this week. Around 160 anchor rock bolts have already been installed into the cliff, with another 59 to go. The anchors hold the steel mesh onto the cliff face, which will then be coated in a 1600 square metre layer of either sprayed shotcrete or a special mat surfacing. The original completion date was estimated for October, but NZTA regional performance manager Mark Owen says the project is now due to be completed in November.

Students miss school as flu bug spreads Jacob Chandler

School rolls have declined in the region over the past week as many pupils are staying home sick with common colds, gastric bugs and the flu. At one stage Garin College had around 30 per cent of their roll away sick, with 160 absences from the 480 student school. Reliving principal Sheila Granger says the school has also had a lot of staff away sick but the numbers of both staff and students are starting to climb back up. “Things seem to be coming right, now,” she says. “It seems to be a gastric bug as well as a bit of a cold going around, too. Other schools are having a lot of absences too I believe.” Nelson College for girls principal Cathy Ewing says she has also noticed around 15 to 20 per cent of her students have been away sick. “We’re not in epidemic preparations, but we’ve definitely had more staff and students away in the last week than we would normally do. “It’s been flu type things as I understand. Headache fluey symptoms and that kind of thing.” Nayland College principal Daniel Wilson says he doesn’t think his school has been hit as hard as the others. “I just ran the reports today and we’ve had 12.5 per cent of students away, which is compared to around eight per cent for the term.”

MINIS FOR MILES: Julie Eccles with her Austin Mini 1971, nicknamed Dinky due to it being shortened by 0.6 of a metre. The Minis in Nelson club celebrated the cars fifty-sixth birthday last Sunday, first gathering in the WOW car park for a sausage sizzle and then taking a drive to Motueka, before enjoying a meal at The Vic Mac’s Brew Bar in the evening. There were just over 20 cars in attendance and members also took the chance to raise some funds for the Nelson Marlborough Rescue Helicopter. In total, the club managed to gather $919 thanks to donations and support from The Vic Brew Bar. Photo: Jessie Johnston.

Nelson man Jeff Chandler donates blood at the Trafalgar Park pavilion last week as part of the NZ Blood twice-yearly visit to the region. Photo: Kate Russell.

Donations are bleeding us dry Donating blood is second nature for local man Jeff Chandler, who came along to Nelson’s mobile blood drive on Friday morning for his 75th donation. The mobile blood drive, run by the New Zealand Blood Service, aims to visit Nelson twice a year from Christchurch, and stays for three days to collect blood from bases in Richmond and Nelson. Since the Nelson Blood Centre closed in 2013, this has been the only way that Nelson and Tasman residents can give blood. Jeff says he didn’t realise it was his 75th donation when he turned up at the Trafalgar Pa-

vilion. “It just crept up on me,” he says. He first donated blood 30 years ago in Christchurch. “I had a serious accident when I was 14 that required a blood transfusion,” he says. “When I got well I went along to a blood donation through work and have been doing it ever since.” He has no plans to stop at 75 donations either, and one day hopes to get to 100. “I’ve stayed fit and healthy all my life, so I’ll keep doing it as long as I can.” Jane Condell, donor recruiter from the New Zealand Blood Service, says it has been an “incredibly busy” week. “We’re always full when we come to

Nelson,” she says. “We’ve also seen a lot of younger donors come in with their parents, which is great.” In fact, they have been so busy that they are coming back in November for another blood drive. Because the stand down period between donations is 84 days, they will need a new lot of donors, so Jane is urging Nelson and Tasman residents to sign up to donate. The mobile blood service will be collecting blood at Club Waimea on November 3rd, and at the Trafalgar Park Pavilion on November 4 and 5. For more information, visit www.nzblood.co.nz

Mike Pero Real Estate Stoke - Doing It Better

Winners: Community and Supreme Award Mitchell and the team at Mike Pero Real Estate are based in Stoke, but sell property all over the Nelson region. Their hard work and commitment both to their clients and the community saw them rewarded at the Mike Pero Real Estate conference in Fiji a few weeks ago, where they were recipients of the Supreme Award for the South Island for overall excellence, and Katarina Campbell was the recipient of two awards – 1st place for sales units, and 2nd place for productivity salesperson nationwide (non-business owner category). But it’s the fourth award that is really close to their hearts, and one of which they are immensely proud – a Special Appreciation Award for Community Involvement. “This award enscapulates the effort that the whole team have put into giving back to the Community – through fund raising for deserving local families through the Mike Pero Foundation, their sponsorship of the Mike Pero Nelson Giants, the Mike Pero Trolley Derby, and various community groups such as

Hospice, sports groups, and local schools. “We are all fully aware of the responsibility we have to give back to the community that has supported us so well. We’d like to take this opportunity to thank all our loyal clients who have entrusted us with their referrals and house sales over the last year, and look forward to continuing to provide the best service and results for our clients. Our commitment to supporting our local community continues and we look forward to seeing you out and about as the weather turns warmer.” Currently, the market is very buoyant and we have lots of buyers searching for properties and listings are low across Nelson. If you’d like to join the growing numbers of delighted sellers who have engaged the services of the team at Mike Pero Real Estate, Stoke, please give us a call or drop by the office at Strawbridge Square in Stoke – we look forward to meeting you.

‘Overwhelmed’ Koha the colour of love Nelson Wedding Show shed facing closure www.nelsonweddingshow.co.nz Kate Russell

Nelson’s Koha Shed needs a new home, and will be facing closure if it doesn’t find one within the next six weeks. The shed, which opened in June, is a place where people can come and receive donated goods at no cost. But organisers were given their notice last week, with the resident whose garage it’s being run from saying that they’ve had enough. Cara Christall, who is the shed’s main organiser, says the space was only intended to be temporary, and with the shed becoming busier, it has become too much for the resident. The shed is also too small, and has had to be extended twice with tarpaulins. On several occasions they have goods ruined with the rain coming in. “We’re really feeling the pressure to find a new space,” says Cara. “So many people are aware of what we do and I feel so scared for some people if we have to go.” The shed is on the waiting list

for a council-owned space, but Cara is hoping “someone with a big heart” will come through and help out. “Ultimately, we need a dry space which is large enough to house what we have,” says Cara. “We have to turn away lots of big ticket items that are donated to us, so a bigger space would be ideal – but beggars can’t be choosy, we’ll take what we can get.” “We feel like we are supporting so many people, but now we are the ones who need help,”

Trafalgar Street’s iconic Trathen Building will soon be gone, but not forgotten, as plans of a $2.38 million replacement building are revealed that will pay tribute to the existing structure. The Trathen Building, built in 1920, has been deemed an ‘extremely high’ earthquake risk, meeting only six percent of National Building Standards. It cannot be insured for earthquakes, or remain in its current form. Michelle Trathen, CEO of Trathen Properties, says that the family have worked with architects to come up with a ‘modern and innovative’ design for the new building, that will recycle any materials of the original building that can be salvaged. It will also prominently feature the Trathen name in the same way the existing building does. The building will feature two

It will also have solar panels that double as shade to the upstairs areas while powering the building’s lift and escalator. “We are very proud of our Nelson heritage and we have poured our heart and soul into trying to come up with the best solution, not only for us but for

A brewery, bar and pizza restaurant will be opening next to Raeward Fresh in Richmond later this year. The new venture is being started by the owners of US beer brewing company who have settled in Nelson. The microbrewery and pizza restaurant will employ up to 30 staff. Mic and Molley Heynekamp started brewing beer commercially in 1999 when they founded the Socorro Springs Brewing Company in New Mexico, later moving to Colorado in 2009 to found Eddyline Brewery. But after “falling in love” with New Zealand during a vacation, the Heynekamps decided to move here with their children and set up a brewpub and wood-fired pizza restaurant in Nelson. Mic is hoping the business will be open by November.

For 27 years, the Stoke Companions have been meeting every week to talk, meet new people and exercise. The group has around 30 members and every Wednesday morning they do aerobics before doing some other activity. Over the past year or so the group have been in a holding phase as earthquake strengthening work was done to the hall they use, the Stoke Methodist Church hall. But with the ladies back in the hall, committee member Yvonne Kleiven says they’d like to attract some more members. “There must be some people

Editorial: Let’s support new airlines Locally Owned and Operated

Andrew Board

Protests from local folk have been getting louder and louder over the past few years and the right people were obviously listening. Originair starting flying earlier this month, Kiwi Regional Airlines will start flying next month and Jetstar is on the verge of announcing where it will fly, with Nelson strongly tipped to be in the mix. It’s a relief for many of us, but how did Air New Zealand react? Exactly as many predicted, by slashing its fares as low as $59 for flights to Auckland, Wellington

It’s an exciting time for Nelson air travellers. For years we’ve been at the mercy of Air New Zealand and they’ve shown very little of it. We’ve been forced to pay extraordinary fares – often larger than international fares – because we had little choice. So Air New Zealand has rubbed its hands in pleasure and overcharged us year in, year out. The cost of air travel was out of control, and out of reach for many Nelsonians.

article, saying he’s not surprised to see the price drop. “We’re delighted to see that without even announcing destinations or publishing a schedule, Jetstar is already making regional travel much more affordable,” Kerr said. For many, the cheap Air NZ fares will help them fly to see friends and family, enjoy a holiday or travel for work. That’s great, but let’s not forget how they treated us when they were the only ones flying here. I urge locals support the other airlines as much as they can.

No more round-abouts: Oh, please, no more roundabouts. They block traffic flows at peak times. The trouble is caused by a minority of rude and impatient Nelson drivers unable to merge or control their desire to race. If a slower driver pisses you off, try and control your road rage. If you cannot, buy a mobility scooter or a bicycle. Dot Parsons. Free WiFi costs: The Weekly notes the absurdity of ratepayers supporting innercity Wi-Fi at $1.20 per use. But this is only one example of council continuing to lavishly spend money from rates on non-core activities while infrastructure receives insufficient funding from rates. Instead, council borrows to fund infrastructure. Compare our situation in Nelson to the council based at Oamaru, where over the last twelve months, council operated with a multi-million dollar surplus despite installing a new water purification facility. That council sticks to its knitting, and thus does not have the cost overruns that plague councils like Nelson. The huge liabilities accepted by NCC in recent years will swamp Nelson ratepayers over the next ten years. Maybe then we will begin electing councillors who are prudent with our money, rather than ones who are susceptible to lobby groups wanting to raid the public purse. Dan McGuire. Gordon Levy used to spend hours every August helping to organise the Cancer Society's Daffodil Day Appeal. Gordon has sadly passed away, but over 20 years later his daughter Pip Little is continuing the family's involvement in Daffodil Day by growing and picking daffodils she planted on their Hope property specifically for the Cancer Society's biggest fundraiser of the year. Pip planted 5000 daffodil bulbs

last year and this week has been busy picking the flowers to help the society's Nelson centre fill the order for 234 bunches to be distributed to businesses around Nelson and Tasman. "Dad was one of the first volunteers who organised Daffodil Day in Richmond, so I decided I'd like help out as well," Pip says. "I went to the Cancer Society last year and said we had some land to grow daffodils for Daffodil Day, and then we planted all these bulbs that were mostly donated."

Cancer Society Nelson centre manager Linda Lucre says Pip has joined an army of around 500 volunteers who help make Daffodil Day a success. The volunteers will be picking and bunching daffodils early this week in preparation for Friday, when they will set up collection sites at 30 locations in Nelson, Stoke, Richmond, Brightwater, Wakefield, Motueka, Murchison and Golden Bay. Last year, Daffodil Day raised $85,000 for the Nelson centre of the Cancer Society.

Fabric & patchwork paradise

Grape Escape Complex - McShanes Road Richmond - Ph 544 4630

Creative people are everywhere and you don’t have to go far to find June Law, a passionate teacher and expert in all things fabric and thread. June’s Room is her latest project, offering a nurturing environment where people wanting to develop their creativity can come and achieve wonderful things. For the first 20 years of her working life June was running cinemas, in the 1960s when television hit, she also qualified as a home economics teacher and has been dedicated to the profession for most of her life. After retiring

from teaching, June was invited to go overseas for 12 months as a volunteer teacher and help up-skill girls in the art of patchwork and quilting in Thailand. Droughts had put an end to any kind of income so the aim of June’s teaching was to give the girls skills they could use to support themselves. “That was a very humbling experience and when I left Thailand after 12 months, I felt I could do anything,” says June. So she returned to New Zealand and bought the gallery within the Grape Escape complex, operating it for seven years.

A proud supplier to June’s room

June’s Room was established to fill a gap in the area which lacked, at the time, a source of quality fabric. As she was still running the gallery, June’s Room was an idea that June was looking forward to focusing on in her “second” retirement. With the gallery officially closed, June’s Room is in full swing and people are welcome to come and learn from a passionate crafter. “This is how I see my role in this stage of my life, passing on knowledge while I still can,” says June. With over 50 years of professional teaching experience in all aspects of sewing and needlecraft, there is no end of knowledge to learn from and there is nothing June enjoys more than engaging with people who have similar interests and helping them grow their confidence. Julie Hunter, June’s Room features a Suzanne Law. huge range of colourful cotton and linen fabrics, sourced from around the world, plus, a range of accessories and craft supplies both for customers and to enhance her teaching abilities. Working alongside June, Susanna Law and Julie Hunter are more than happy to assist in fabric and colour selection, as well as offering their skills and advice in all aspects of quilt making and general sewing. From the formulation of ideas and designs through to sewing

techniques and pattern translations, June’s Room is here to help you reach your creative potential. “People talk about the atmosphere in here, and they all enjoy it, the ladies can’t wait to get here every week, some people even travel from Motueka. A number of the ladies in care giving situations set aside this time to do something for themselves. They’re learning in a non judgmental environment, in their own time and at their own pace,” says June. Everyone from beginners to the experienced are welcome at June’s Room and everyone is able to work on their own project, bouncing ideas off other students and June, and creating a finished product they can be proud of. June’s current class schedule includes two June Law and day sessions on Monday and Thursday from 9:30am until 11:30am and covers patchwork and quilting techniques. These skills are also taught on Tuesday and Thursday evenings from 6pm until 8pm, then on Friday, from 10am until 12pm, people can learn how to sew and use over lockers. Anyone that is interested in joining one of June’s classes can contact her by email, escape. gallery@clear.net.nz or give her a call between 10am and 4pm on 544 4630.

Freezer now full for Gun Shop winner When the Gun Shop in Motueka decided to hold a competition for its first birthday, they didn't quite expect the response they got. To enter the competition – the winner of which received a half day guided hunt with Doughboy Safari owner Alex Monahan – people simply had to buy one item at the Gun Shop Motueka on the day of its birthday. They ended up with 280 entries. "It was certainly a busy day," says store co-owner James Simpson. "We haven't seen anything like it, the promotion in the Weekly certainly did the trick." Winner of the competition, Shane Ryland, also happened to be the first person in the store that day when he went in to buy a new jacket. Earlier this month he collected his prize and, as a result, has a freezer full of venison.

AQUABOTS: Michael Dew, Jed Shackleton, Tom Hargreaves and Zena Denton test out the Aquabot they built. The Aquabots programme was run over the weekend by the Ministry of Inspiration at Garin College. The Ministry of Inspiration will also bringing the programme to a number of other areas in the upper South Island including Blenheim, Tapawera, Rai Valley and Karamea. A regional competition will be held at the Richmond Aquatic Centre in October. Photo: Jacob Chandler.

You get to choose While Sprig & Fern are the experts at brewing delicious beer, they need your help to decide the look of their next Pilsner label. It’s the second year in a row that Sprig & Fern, along with Art Expo Nelson have offered this unique opportunity which will see one New Zealand artist get their work showcased, for a limited time, on one of their biggest selling beer labels. While the total number of entries isn’t known, Sprig & Fern owner and head brewer Tracy Banner says they have received a lot, and now four paintings have been short-listed with voting in full swing to find out which image Sprig & Fern patrons want to see on their Pilsner riggers. Tracy says the competition is a great chance for the winner to get their art out to a huge audience as their Pilsner riggers are stocked in supermarkets and liquor stores around the country. The chance to choose your favourite artist is as simple as walking into any one of their nine Sprig & Fern taverns between

now and September 12, filling out the form and putting it in the voting box. Everyone is welcome to vote too, whether you’re staying for a drink or two or you simply want to pop in and make your choice, you don’t have to buy anything to vote. The winner of the coveted prize will be announced at Art Expo Nelson on Labour Weekend and as well as their painting on a Sprig & Fern beer, the lucky people’s favourite will also win $1000 prize money. The four finalists in the competition are from Tasman, Nelson and Temuka, although their identities will be kept anonymous until voting has come to an end. Make sure you take a trip to Sprig & Fern between now and September 12 to vote for your favourite work of art. There are seven taverns you can vote at throughout the region including Hardy St, Milton St, Tahuna, Richmond, Brightwater, Motueka and Mapua, as well as their taverns in Thorndon and Petone in Wellington. For Gemma Reed, owning her own business was the ultimate career step and has been on her mind since she entered the sign writing and graphics industry ten years ago. After leaving school, Gemma took on a five year apprenticeship with a local signage and design company, during which she received an award for top apprentice for sign writing and graphics in New Zealand for 2008. After her sixth year working for the company, Gemma left to pursue a three year career selling real estate, before returning to the world of signage and design, contracting to other local signage and graphics businesses. When the opportunity came

along to lease a space in the Wakatu Industrial Estate, Gemma took it and The Art Dept was established. It’s been operating since the middle of May this year and, off the starting block, Gemma has made a splash, already completing a number of signage projects for local clients. While owning her own business has always been a dream, exactly what she would be offering was decided when she took part in work experience at school with Designart Signs. She knew art and creativity would have to play a role in her career and found signage and graphics was the perfect fit. From the design to the installation, Gemma provides both the

Former All Black Chris Jack will be having his cake and eating it, at the Appleby School Country Fair next Saturday. Like all the Appleby School parents, Chris has put his hand up to help run the popular fair. And because he is a self-confessed expert on baking, it made sense to assign him to the arduous task of judging the cake and truffle baking competitions. "When we were on tour, we got tired of hotel food so we'd do some baking in our rooms, so I've know a bit about it," Chris says. "But I'm definitely more of a consumer - I know a good cake when I taste one." Chris says he will be looking at both presentation and taste but isn't too concerned about the ingredients, saying, "it won't have to be healthy as long as it tastes good." He also hinted that chocolate and carrot cakes would have the inside running because they are his favourites.

Chris' wife Kym says her husband's vast experience eating cakes at home makes him the perfect man for the job. "I usually bake one cake a week and the kids know they not allowed to eat too much at once, but Chris doesn't. If all the cake's gone, I know who's eaten it." Fortunately, Chris will only be sampling a small piece of the cakes and truffles which will then be sold in the cafe kitchen. The winning cakes will be announced at 1pm with bakers receiving cookbooks and vouchers from Pomeroys Coffee. The fair will also feature traditional activities including pony rides, plant and produce sales, silent auction and hot food. There will be live entertainment provided by local bands, and pupil and ex-pupil talent - hay bale seating completes the country fair theme. The fair will be held at the Appleby School grounds on the Moutere Highway on Saturday September 5 from 11am to around 2pm.

Prices Gold beaten by slick college team

Carol Cook

With the final round of the championship round yet to be played, the semi-finalists have already been found in the Premier 2 Grade. Prices Pharmacy Gold, Waimea College A, Tapawera Nelson Honey and Jacks Pro Netball have qualified, however their seedings could change considerably after the final round next week. Competition has been keen and at times there has been very little between the teams. Saturday’s results had Tapawera and Waimea College 10A scrape through with one goal victories, Jacks Pro Netball had a five goal win while Waimea College A accounted for Prices after a very slow start. Waimea scored off the first centre pass, however Prices hit the ground running and scored seven unanswered goals and looked to be cruising for a “cricket score”. Prices goal shoot, Dana Weir found her rhythm early to convert a number of long range shots and she was well supported by Emma Riddell who had the perfect record. Once Waimea established their

links through court, they then looked as if they had come to play and had narrowed the deficit to 9–11 at the first break. Prices coach Rebekah Shepard made five positional changes for the second quarter and, although the teams traded goals in the first couple of minutes, they struggled to match the college team through the mid court. Waimea went on to score five unanswered goals to take the lead, which they did not relinquish. Waimea were slick off the line with captain Kalyssa Rasmussen taking the majority of the centre passes, while Brooke Mathieson was an efficient second phase option. Waimea’s shooters were receiving stress-free ball from their feeders as Prices struggled to slow the ball through court. Waimea had a 20–18 advantage at the major break. Chelsea Routhan returned to the court at centre to stabilize Price’s attack, and wing attack Mandy Whiting was steady. While Zar Fa’avae was expensive in the penalty count, she was a threat as a rebounder as she denied Waimea the second opportunity. Nicola Charles could be well pleased

with her performance, she was an impressive link and displayed a good eye for the feed, even though she was guilty of a couple of optimistic feeds which went over the base line.

While Prices have played some enterprising netball throughout the season, I believe they would admit to being beaten by a better team on the day. Waimea’s shooters continued their work rate and

accuracy at 83 per cent while Prices slipped. Prices rotated their bench with eleven changes, while Waimea introduced a new player for the final quarter for the 45–34 win.

NelsoN College Earlier this year Peter Grigg, Master In Charge of Rugby, devised a strategic plan for the future years of Nelson College Rugby. Part of this was to expose the boys to more matches against schools from outside of the local area. These games are all aimed at better equipping the college’s players with the skills, experience and confidence they need to achieve their potential against teams from around the country. For the first part of this, the U14A’s, U16A’s and second XV are playing three matches in three days against teams in Timaru and Christchurch on August 31, September 1 and September 2, this year. The 14A’s will play Timaru Boys, Burnside and then St Andrews. For their further development a trip is planned for next year to Wellington to play two matches and then in 2017 to the Gold Coast International Rugby Festival which consists of six games over a week. The plan for the boy’s development is unique amongst school teams

Some of their results this season include the Nelson College U14As winning 47-0 against Marlborough Boys U14 in May and Nelson U14As beating Shirley Boys U14, 45-15 in June. The boys have held fundraising events and plan for more over the next couple of years, including quiz nights and a sportsperson’s evening for which guest speakers are being sought. Sam started gymnastics when he was seven years old, and it has been his passion ever since. “There’s honestly no other sport like it,” he says. “Some of the moves I do and aspire towards just don’t seem physically possible, and the huge joy of finally perfecting a single move after often several months of training is just incredible.” With the competition looming, Sam is training a bit more than he usually does, clocking up about 19.5 hours a week. Nelson College has ended a mixed season on a low, losing the UC Championship plate final to Burnside, 19-7. Nelson finished sixth in this year's secondary schools competition that includes the top school rugby teams from the Crusaders Super 15 franchise area. That put them out of contention for the top silverware but in the semi finals for the plate. Last week they beat Marlborough Boys College to earn a spot in Saturday's final against Burnside in Christchurch. Nelson were well-beaten though, with their only points coming from a Willy Havili try, which was converted by Matthew Soper. The season will be fondly remembered though for winning the Quadrangular Tournament in Wellington for the first time since 2001.

Injuries are always certain in high level gymnastics, according to Sam. “I’ve had a ridiculous number of injuries doing gymnastics, you’ve just got to ask any one of my friends and they’ll give you a huge list,” he says. Rising Nelson gymnast Sam Fu-Allen has turned a dream into a reality after being selected to represent New Zealand in an international tournament in Texas at the end of the year. The talented 16 year old Nelson College student will join 13 other Kiwis, aged 15 to 25 at the Valeri Liukin Invitational event near Dallas, Texas, from December 11-13. Sam will be one of three New Zealand gymnasts competing at U18 International level. Sam says he is “completely overjoyed” at being selected. “It’s always been a dream of mine to make it to an international competition since I was a little kid, and now it’s finally become a reality,” he says. “Not only that, but I’ve achieved it earlier than I expected to.” The selection is a well deserved honour for Sam, who's had notable success in the past year. At the New Zealand National GymSports Championship in Auckland last October, he won golds in floor, pommel horse and parallel bars in the level 8 men's competition. Then the big news came that he had won the Mark Jujnovich Cup - one of the major awards of the championships, which is given to the gymnast with the highest individual apparatus score across all senior grades. He won it for his floor routine, with a huge score of 15.433. Earlier this year, Sam received the letter from GymSports New Zealand inviting
