Despite having no Delta cases in the region, Tasman needs to remain vigilant in Level 4 to avoid the situation other parts of the

country are facing, says Tasman Mayor Tim King. Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern announced on Monday that the country will be staying in Alert Level 4 until Friday 27 August at 11.59pm. Auckland will stay in Alert Level 4 until at least Tues-

day 31 August at 11.59pm. When making the announcement, Ardern showed a map of locations of known contacts. She said over 100 were in the South Island, including the Nelson region. “This is a stressful time for many

people and businesses in our community and as a council we need to continue to provide our essential services,” says Tim. He asks that people support all workers whatever service they are providing for you. “Council staff and contractors

are doing jobs like keeping water supplies running, clearing blocked wastewater pipes, and continuing to collect rubbish and recycling as usual.” Tim asks please don’t interrupt

Locals from across the region have been helping each other out during challenging times. Whether it is the friend helping get groceries delivered, the florist giving away free bouquets, the café owner donating essential food items or the once failed sewing student finding her calling in making free masks, Level 4 brought out the best in us. Currently, only wastewater in Auckland and Wellington have shown Covid-19. “Delta has changed the rules of the game, but we have changed our approach too, we’ve hardened our alert levels, widened our contact tracing, required more mask wearing and we are testing more people. “It is absolutely possible to get on top of this, we just need to keep it up and ensure that we’re not in restrictions any longer than we need to be,” said Ardern.

It’s largely business as usual for Port Nelson and Nelson Airport with adopted measures to keep staff and the community safe under Alert Level 4. Port Nelson is classed as an essential service and is required to continue key regional services. Port Nelson’s communication and engagement manager Jessica Ammundsen says the port is working well with safety and distancing protocols in place and non-operational staff staying home. “We’re still operating, and shipments are still being exported and imported into the region.” She says what’s not coming into port is logs and medium density fiberboard (MDF) as

Port Nelson is able to operate in Level 4 under restrictions. We’re just exporting and clearing everything we currently have on the port.” The Ministry of Transport has confirmed that there are no restrictions on freight and that

all freight can be distributed and received. Jessica says it’s essential that all cargo continues to be picked up. “We’re still able to go and receive their goods, all freight is essential,” she says. If you have any questions regarding your cargo, please

contact cargo.reception@port nelson.co.nz. Nelson Airport’s marketing and landside operations manager Bryn Lloyd says staff transition into lockdown has been fairly smooth. Under Level 4 regional travel is strictly limited to those travelling home in the first 48 hours of lockdown, people undertaking essential services, freight or other permitted reason such as urgent child care or having to leave the country. Bryn says residents returning home to Nelson have been largely compliant with airport staff though they have seen their fair share of opposition. “We only had one non-travelling person last week who wasn’t happy that they weren’t allowed in the terminal to meet someone from a flight,” he says.

Waimea College principal Scott Haines was running a school of 1600 students and a couple of hundred staff from his kitchen table on Monday. He says all the students are in teams, with teachers establishing communication and the expectation from staff is that the students engage with work set. With about 80 students having no access to devices, some were dropped off contactlessly on Monday. Communication sent to Waimea College teachers says there is no expectation that they have large volumes of work ready to go from the outset. “However, try to keep tasks brief, straightforward, and regular. Managing several openended projects can quickly become overwhelming for students.” Scott says it is a delicate balance but there are still exams at the end of the year so students need to be engaged. At Friday’s meeting of principals from the Top of the South, concern was raised that some schools have had an issue with employers seeking students to

The staff at Waimea College were working on plans for when Nelson goes into Level 3. At that level, Year 9 and 10 students who have no alternatives are permitted to return. Years 11 to 13 are expected to continue working from home.

At Alert Level 2, students will be back at school. Scott says the Ministry of Education is consulting on whether masks will be mandatory at this level. Richmond Primary School has taken a different approach to learning. Along with online learning, they have a ‘make a hut’ activity. Originally the idea of Ryan Canning, deputy principal at Nayland School, children are encouraged to make a hut big enough for their family. Then they share photos of their creation online. Richmond School middle syndicate leader Jo Canning says making the huts incorporates all sorts of learning and is fun, which helps connect families.

Kindness in the time of Covid from page 1 Mackenzie Binnie knows the struggle of stocking up on food while in emergency housing so when she heard her friend needed help, didn’t hesitate to step up. The Tahuna woman in need posted to Facebook as she was unable to get her usual grocery delivery. Mackenzie then sent a taxi to the woman’s home full of food and toiletries to help her through lockdown. “She was a bit reluctant to take it, but she was incredibly grateful. “I know that she lives day by day and if I was in that situation, I would hope someone would help me out too,” Mackenzie says.

She says she feels it is important to help out when you can. Owner of Jaks Island Café on Bridge St, Kate Manley, also helped struggling locals. She donated a boot full of veg, eggs, milk, yoghurt, and fresh baking to people in need. “I’d rather it go to people who can use it rather than it go to waste.” She asked the community who was in need and says she was inundated with messages. “Everyone was so grateful.” Kate says making the donation was a no-brainer. “I didn’t think about it, I wasn’t after any clout or anything.”

When Rachel Moyle, owner of Woodlea Floral Studio in Brightwater, took delivery of her weekly flower order, she didn’t realise lockdown was just hours away. “It was the worst timing as I knew I couldn’t sell them as I’m not an essential business.” With more than $1000 worth of stock sat in her garage, she couldn’t see it all going to waste. “I thought I may as well make up some bouquets and leave them out for people walking past.” She hand-tied each bunch of flowers with string and wrapped them in brown paper, just as she would for any paid order. “I did 50 bouquets by lunchtime, and they all went. I still have

loads left to make up too.” Rachel says things could have been worse. “I had two events last week, so I’m glad Covid didn’t mess those up as that would have been awful.” Rachel recently gave up her shop in Nelson after the last lockdown forced her to reassess the business. “Thankfully, I’m online-only now so can work from home instead of paying rent on an empty shop this time around.” The flowers she gave away were premium quality and included protea, gerberas, lilies, dahlias, tulips and roses. Rachel says she doesn’t mind paying them forward.

“I’d rather just put a smile on people’s faces.” When Loretta Nicholson realised masks were causing anxiety, she decided to do something about it. Realising some people didn’t have money to buy them, Loretta started making masks to give away. “It’s been pretty much first in first served,” says Loretta. “I’ll make them until my supplies run out.” Ironically, Loretta failed sewing at school. In fact, she ended up with detention when she accidentally sewed her sewing book together. Since then, she’s taught herself to sew and started a sewing business. “If I can make masks anyone can,” she says. “It’s really quick.”

Region’s vaccination rates lead country Jenny Nicholson Reporter

jenny@waimeaweekly.co.nz

Nelson Marlborough Health has delivered more than 100,000 doses of Covid-19 vaccines placing it well ahead of most other DHBs for the nationwide rollout. As of August 15, the latest figures available, the Top of the South has had 104,949 vaccines administered - 118 per cent of its planned rollout. The DHB is the second top in the country for the

rollout. McGlashen’s Pharmacy is one of the locations in Richmond that has been busy with dozens booked to have their vaccine. The shop was rearranged with seating to allow people to be comfortable while waiting the mandatory 20 minutes after vaccination, at the same time maintaining Level 4 physical distancing requirements. With seating needed they are unable to offer Covid-19 vaccinations during working hours so are running evening clinics.

Colin Bass was notified the previous week that he was eligible for a vaccine and found it easy to book in for it at the pharmacy. “It’s quite a social environment here,” he said. “It’s got a nice local feel to it.” People were pleased to be getting their vaccine before lockdown. The next day saw a pause in the vaccination programme. Those with appointments affected by the pause were to be contacted directly with rebooking information.

Waimea Dam resumes construction Staff Reporter Waimea Water Ltd will continue construction of the Waimea Community Dam during Level 4 lockdown. Waimea Water Ltd CEO Mike Scott says Ministry of Business, Innovation, and Employment has authorised the construction of the Waimea Community Dam to resume during Level 4.

The requirement outlines that during Alert Level 4 building, construction and maintenance services can proceed if they are required to address immediate risks to health and safety or nationally important infrastructure. “This approval to move ahead is good news for the project, as we are at a critical stage of construction that

requires progress to manage risk.” Mike says WWL will oversee contractors to ensure their systems and performance meets requirements and the Health and Safety at Work Act 2015. “We will ensure compliance with the Level 4 Covid-19 control plan. Health and safety of the construction team and community is paramount,” he says.

For Tyler, 2, and Luca Gargiulo, 4, lockdown is an exciting time filled with bear hunts and bike rides. They were the first family to display teddies outside their Wakefield home this lockdown and couldn’t wait to go looking for others in the neighbourhood. Dad Matt says they still talk about the teddies from the 2020 lockdown. “One house dressed their teddy in a different outfit every day. That was a real highlight for the kids.” He says it gave them the motivation to leave the house and go bear hunting every day on their bikes. “The kids couldn’t wait to put the teddies out and I’m sure they will be adding more as time goes on.” Photo: Supplied.

Alert level puts pause to local funerals and weddings Jenny Nicholson Reporter

jenny@waimeaweekly.co.nz

Chris Muir was planning his dad's funeral just a few months after burying his mum. For his family, lockdown has given them time and space to think. Under Level 4 restrictions, funerals and weddings cannot publicly take place. After originally thinking of a service at the funeral home, with the lockdown announcement they realised family and friends from Auckland wouldn’t be able to travel. “We’re looking at the plan b side of things,” says Chris. “In our specific situation it’s given us time to regroup. Nothing is rushed.” Having taken a step back, they saw there was no urgency for them, and they are now thinking of a memorial barbeque in their parents’ backyard once travel is an option again. Chris says there is no rush, but

he would like it to be before Christmas. “It would be Dad’s sort of thing. He would be the one on the barbeque and liked having people around.” They plan to put up marquees and sit around sharing stories of his dad, Andrew’s, life.

We can do funerals livestream, but no one can be present. The best option for families is often to wait until restrictions are lifted. Waimea Richmond Funeral Services’ Craig Mills

Waimea Richmond Funeral Services operations manager Craig Mills says many families are being left with no choice and it’s incredibly difficult. “It’s very similar to the last lockdown,” he says. “We can do funerals live-stream, but no one can be present. “The best option for families is

often to wait until restrictions are lifted.” Services had been planned for last week, and families had to make the difficult decision to have their loved one cremated or put the funeral off until after lockdown. Shone & Shirley funeral director Alastair Hebberd says families who would have normally stayed with the body are now not even able to view their loved one. Richmond celebrant Marg Palmer says she has had both funerals and weddings put on pause last week. There are situations where weddings were postponed due to previous lockdowns and the couple are now caught up in the current one. “I am keeping my fingers and toes crossed that those in this situation will have their wedding this time,” she says. At Alert Level 3, you can hold a funeral, tangihanga or burial, but these are limited to 10 people, including, members of the clergy or staff attending.

While others restocked at the supermarket, Richmond’s Josiah Martin and his father Jono, headed for the hills once they heard lockdown was coming. “We picked up our grass fed, organic free-range pork to feed the family in lockdown,” says Jono. Lockdowns have changed Josiah’s plans. Last year he was at Bible College in Australia, but came home when Covid-19 hit. He and Jono enjoyed some hunting trips before Josiah left to walk the Te Araroa Trail which he finished earlier this year. He’s home again for this lockdown before returning to his job as a ski instructor at Rainbow Ski Field. Photo: Supplied.

Supermarkets handle pre-lockdown rush Jenny Nicholson Reporter

jenny@waimeaweekly.co.nz

Cindy and Matt Rigg were just filling in time last Tuesday evening before picking up their daughter from football training, and had no idea that a nationwide Level 4 lockdown was imminent. They popped into Pak’n’Save and got caught up in the lines of people stocking up for the three-day lockdown. Within an hour of the announcement last Tuesday evening, the supermarket was packed and soon after lines had formed outside with people again having to wait their turn to enter. Fruit and meat shelves were emptying fast, and trolleys were filled with toilet paper and wine. Although Cindy and Matt were at the store for routine shopping, they joined the queues waiting for about 30 minutes at checkouts. “It’s crazy,” Cindy said. Covid-19 has already had an impact on Cindy’s family. Her brother is a helicopter pilot working in Papua New Guinea. He’s been helping with border control, moving defence forces around, medivacing people to hospitals and keeping gas lines going. His group’s rotation was to end at the start of September, and another crew would have taken their place. But he hasn’t been able to get a spot in MIQ. With a wife and boy

here in New Zealand he wants to come home, but he’s told Cindy he probably won’t make it home until next year. He heard about a robotic app that would help him to book quickly, so he bought it. He still missed out when more spaces came up. They were gone in just four seconds. Along with a few treats for herself, Wendy Kennedy had masses of cat food containers. With three cats and all of them liking different food, she wanted to make sure they didn’t run out. “I care for people at Ernest Rutherford during the day and then my pets at night,” she said. One checkout operator said the busyness had started about 5pm and when she came back after her break at about 6.30pm there were lines and lines of people. Fresh Choice Richmond’s manager Gary Watson said Tuesday is usually their quietest night, but they had people waiting into the aisles after the lockdown announcement. “We probably had four times as many people come through the checkouts as usual.” He says staff called in within half an hour of the announcement to offer to work so things went really smoothly. “It was busy but not bedlam,” he said. With the introduction of mandatory masks in supermarkets, they were handing out masks on Thursday to tide people over until they could buy their own.

St Arnaud fundraises for village CCTV Staff Reporter The Rotoiti District Community Council has been investigating a proposal to install communityfunded CCTV cameras at two strategic locations in St Arnaud village. The council says the purpose of the security cameras is to create a safer community and to aid the police in identifying vehicles of interest that come to, or pass through, the village. The council says St Arnaud is ideally suited for security camera installation, having only one road in and out of the village. It is proposed that they be installed on each end of the village to record the passage of vehicles. At this stage, there are no cameras planned within the village itself, though it would be easy to install additional cameras to the system in the future. The cameras will be positioned in such a way that only vehicles on the road will be in view. Access to the CCTV footage will only be avail-

able to the police and the cameras will not be actively monitored. All data collected by the cameras will be overwritten if not required. This proposal will need to be community-funded at an initial cost of just over $7000. During the next RDCC meeting held today, Wednesday 25 August at 7.15pm at the Lake Rotoiti Community Hall, there will be the opportunity to ask questions or comment on the proposal. The RDCC is accepting contributions from property owners and local businesses with all proceeds going towards the purchase of the system. To make a contribution, pay directly to Rotoiti District Community Council, account number: 38-9010-0624715-01. When making a contribution, include an identifying reference in case money has to be refunded if insufficient funds are raised. Please email the RDCC Secretary at rotoiticommunitycouncil@gmail. com if you have any queries.

Rest homes learn from lockdown Jenny Nicholson Reporter

Staff at both Oakwoods and Ernest Rutherford Villages are calling on what they learned last lockdown. Ernest Rutherford Village manager Brent Maru says the rest home is a good place to be right now. “I don’t know what normal is anymore, but everyone seems happy,” says Brent. In their care centre, staff are wearing masks and face shields and each care unit is a separate bubble. Ryman spokesperson Dave King says they are doing the same things as last lockdown. On Friday, they will be distributing ‘Happy in a Bag’ which consists of a bottle of wine or

beer, with chips or cheese and crackers. Dave says they are scrambling to get it organised, getting in supplies, and packing them up. They also do a grocery run in the afternoons. “Anything we can do to keep people happy and entertained,” he says. Staff at Ernest Rutherford have been given a $2 per hour increase during lockdown. More than 80 per cent of staff at Ernest Rutherford have been vaccinated and 87 per cent of residents. Oakwood Village manager Andrew Morrison says they are focused on infection prevention and control, as well as on resident welfare and wellbeing. The Delta variant has meant a change to how food is ordered by residents. During the last

lockdown they were able to order online from reception. Now all ordering is done over the phone to Fresh Choice who then delivers groceries. Andrew acknowledges that family gives meaning to life and says it is really tough for people not able to see their loved ones. Staff are working to keep activities and engagement going. The care facility at Oakwood has been split into two separate bubbles. No residents or staff can move between the two. Residents are also encouraged to social distance with staff wearing masks at all times. Those in villas are independent but staff are going to each person to check on them. “It is important to overcommunicate at times like this,” says Andrew.

Cancer Society makes a difference to Julie’s journey Jenny Nicholson Reporter

jenny@waimeaweekly.co.nz Julie Wotten’s second cancer story would have been a lot worse without the support of the Cancer Society. Following a diagnosis of breast cancer in 2010 Julie had a mastectomy and, because it hadn’t spread outside the ducts, went ahead with reconstruction. In 2017, she found a lump in the reconstructed breast. “I’m a single parent and the second time was harder,” she says. “My son was 10 years old, so he understood a bit more what cancer meant than he had at four, and I had shifted to Nelson and had no family here.” That’s when she found out just how valuable the Cancer Society was. After surgery and chemotherapy, she went to Christchurch for radiation therapy. While there, she stayed at the Cancer Society’s ‘Daffodil House’. While Nelson Marlborough Health paid for her to fly back to Nelson a few times, knowing there would be weekends where she didn’t see her son was hard on Julie. Christchurch coincided with school holidays and the Cancer Society flew her son to be with her. Julie says cancer left her so tired it was an effort to organise events. So, she appreciated the Cancer Society putting on fun outings for families of those doing the cancer journey. Julie says they were invaluable for her and for her son. Support groups run by the Cancer Society, and the ability to ring or pop in for a chat or information also helped with recovery. From the start, Julie knew the journey would be difficult and long, but she also knew her chances of survival were high and that was the first thing she told her son. “I just feel incredibly grateful for the support I got, both from friends and family and from the Cancer Society. They made a difference.” Each year 25,000 people are diagnosed with cancer in New Zealand and 10,000 people die of cancer-related illnesses. Sadly, for the second year running, the Cancer Society has cancelled their street appeal. Last year in Level 2 it raised $127,000 which was more than usual. Garin Ball postponed again

ROAST WEEK

Jenny Nicholson Reporter

jenny@waimeaweekly.co.nz

It looked like everything was on track for the Garin College Ball. After a postponement due to lockdown last year, organisers were confident that this year it would go ahead on the planned date. So, last week’s sudden announcement of another lockdown came as a blow. “It’s a bit crazy. I was just at school and planning for mock exams and the ball then suddenly we were in Level 4,” says Year 13 student Sapphire Kyles. “Everything just stops. I was a bit shocked.” Sapphire has been busy since the announcement, with early morning and late night messages from students and others associated with the annual event. Being her last year at college, Sapphire says she would be very disappointed if the ball didn’t go ahead. But she thinks it would be just as hard for the Year 12 students. “I think they may get even more excited for the first ball.” Nelson Tailors Menswear’s Sharon Dunbar says there will be a bit of juggling to do with new dates for school balls. However, she was impressed that last year all Nelson Tasman schools managed to reschedule, and all had a ball. In some other centres students missed out.

Just a thought... David Jensen Richmond Baptist Church “This is what the LORD says— your Redeemer, the Holy One of Israel: “I am the LORD your God, who teaches you what is best for you, who directs you in the way you should go…” Isaiah 48:17 “In the past God spoke to our ancestors through the prophets… But in these last days God has spoken to us by His SON…” Hebrews 1:1-2 Hi everyone, Today I want to share a little - about the Bible (AKA ‘the Scriptures’ and ‘the word of God’) and why it’s so important to followers of Jesus. Vaughan Roberts states that, “The Bible is a diverse collection of different writings. It contains 66 books written by about 40 human authors over nearly 2,000 years… Fundamentally, it is just ONE book written by ONE author [God] with ONE main subject - Jesus Christ and the salvation God offers through Him. David Pawson adds that, “The Bible is God’s truth about Himself and how we should relate to Him, set in the context of history…” Ken Boa reminds us that there are two fundamental sources of human knowledge - reason & experience.

Boa adds that there is also a third source of knowledge - REVELATION - that takes us beyond the limitations of human reason and experience. Followers of Jesus believe that Bible is REVELATION from God. Revelation that enables us to confidently explore the deeper, most important questions of life, like- Who is God? Does He care about us? Can we (and how can we?) have a personal relationship with Him? What is the purpose of human existence? What is right and what is wrong? How should I treat others? Is there life after death? Etc. Followers of Jesus believe that God has not been silent throughout human history about these matters but that He has spoken to humanity through His chosen prophets (recorded in the Old Testament) and through Jesus and His chosen eyewitness/earwitness representatives i.e., the apostles (recorded in the New Testament). There are many reasons why I personally believe that the Bible is the word of God. Unfortunately, I don’t have space in this short article to share them with you. One thing I will share though, is that God has spoken to me, and brought about transformation in my life, through the Bible. It has, in the words of the apostle Paul made me, “wise for salvation through faith in Christ” (2 Tim 3:15)

What matters to you

Ruth Russ Oxford-born Thomas Brunner arrived in Nelson in 1841 as a surveyor for the New Zealand Company. As a 20-year-old apprentice he helped to lay sections and roads, and surveyed the Motueka and Riwaka districts in 1842, where he met Kehu. The then 44-year-old Kehu had been a slave since childhood. His father Tamane had been killed when Kehu was 12 and his tribe, the Ngāti Tūmatakōkiri, was defeated in 1810. Kehu was enslaved by the Ngāi Tahu until around 1830, when the Tainui-Taranaki alliance defeated Ngāi Tahu. From then on, Kehu became the property of Ngāti Rarua chiefs in Motueka. Kehu was hired out to Thomas Brunner, to assist in surveying Motueka and the surrounding area. In February 1846, Kehu and Brunner joined Charles Heaphy and William Fox (and, according to some reports, three other Māori) to search for a fabled plain in the St Arnaud region that would offer more land for the colonists. The exploration would last for three weeks, and Heaphy’s diary records what sounds like a long, happy picnic. Travelling with packhorses as far as Kikawa, the men then carried on with their 35kg packs on foot, looking apparently like huge wandering mushrooms. At a mānuka grove near the Howard River, Kehu showed the men how to

William Fox’s watercolour of Kehu, his travelling companion in surveying the region in 1846. Image: Supplied. The only apparent problem the party came across was a bothersome attempt to cross the Buller River. Kehu crossed the ford first in a swift current, but not without difficulty. From the opposite bank “by gestures and curses he showed his contempt for the river and all its tributaries”. Fox stumbled and floated downstream but managed to swim to shore. Brunner searched for an easier crossing and Heaphy swam across above the ford. After this, the men were resigned that there was no mythical plain to offer to the colonists, and the party decided to return to Nelson. On the 20th of February they spent the night in a bark hut left by Māori travellers. Here, Fox painted a watercolour of Kehu snaring a weka.

line a hole with bark, stow supplies in a cache of sorts, and cover the hole with ashes so that the rats could not get at it. He then led the men up the Howard and over an old Māori track to Lake Rotoroa. Heaphy wrote that some visiting Māori had left a waka on the shore. The party climbed aboard, and while Fox painted the scene, Kehu caught eels for supper (although I’m not sure how conducive eel-catching is to painting). They continued on, naming the Mangles River after a director of the New Zealand Company, and eventually came to the Murchison valley: “An expanse of open mānuka country, with pine (kahikatea) forests and fern flats on either side of the Buller,” wrote Heaphy. “The scenery extremely picturesque.”

Forestry industry grinds to Level 4 halt nitely, we are lucky at this time of the year we’ve got a longer time frame and a wee bit longer life expectancy on the wood because of the weather.

Sara Hollyman Reporter

sara@nelsonweekly.co.nz sara@nelsonweekly.co.nz

Nelson’s forestry industry is hurting in the wake of another lockdown and another year of lost production time. Local contractor and Forest Industry Contractors Association board member Nathan Taylor says contractors are disappointed in another lockdown and are crossing their fingers they can get back to work soon. The local industry took a big hit during 2019 when the Pigeon Valley Fire saw all crews ordered to stop work due to extreme fire dangers and limited resources. The following year, 2020, was looked to as a year to recover but that all changed when the country went into Level 4 lockdown for five weeks and crews were once again, forced to stop production. FICA chief executive Prue Younger says, this year, most contractors are resigned to having to stop work. “We’re just not seen as essential. It does give us a bit of breathing space because some of the ports were pretty clogged before lockdown, so it gives them some time to move some stock.”

We’re just not seen as essential. It does give us a bit of breathing space because some of the ports were pretty clogged before lockdown, so it gives them some time to move some stock. The forestry industry is hoping that they can get back to work sooner rather than later. Photo: File. Nathan says it feels like the industry has been constantly hit year after year. “We’ve just come through the floods in Marlborough, so far here it’s generally business as usual. We haven’t really felt the hurt yet, but there are guys over there that still haven’t been able to get back to work since the floods and now this.”

He says now is the time contractors hope to be in full production to prepare for the Christmas and summer period. “It’s not that far from Christmas which is the scary thing. December through to February is the hardest time to get the bills paid because there is a limited amount of production days with Christmas shutdowns, then Nelson’s

public holidays and the likes, so now is when we plan financially for those tough months so that will hurt.” Nathan also worries for the stock that has already been felled and is sitting on the ground waiting to be processed or transported to the port. “That will want to be moved in the next couple of weeks. Defi-

“But soon that wood that is sitting there will start to dry out and get sap stains which will downgrade the quality and force it to be exported instead of staying as domestic grades.” Prue says the industry got a small reprieve from MPI on Friday with news that silviculturists could continue to plant seedlings that had already been removed from the nursery.

Delta deals blow to Daffodil Day

Cancer Society Nelson is urging supporters to donate and fundraise online, as covid forces the cancellation of its iconic street collection. Last year, the organisation was in a similar situation, however it was at alert level 2. “2020 was one of the better years of fundraising that we’ve had from the street appeal – it was wonderful to have so much support from the community, especially because it was the only fundraiser for the whole year,” says Centre Manager, Michelle Hunt. “This year, we were caught by the surprise of the level 4 lockdown.” She says late on Friday afternoon, a nationwide decision was made, that in order to keep the public and volunteers safe, Daffodil Day could not go ahead this year. “It will be the first time in 60 years that we haven’t done an ap-

peal,” says Michelle. Fortunately, Cancer Society Nelson was able to hold its Heritage Homes Tour and Charity Ball earlier this year, but Daffodil Day is their largest annual fundraiser. “So, it’s a big financial blow, not just for us, but for all the cancer societies of New Zealand.” Michelle says, ‘cancer doesn’t stop and neither do we.’ “We’re still working from home, people are still having their cancer treatment, so we’re still providing support.” Annually, Cancer Society Nelson have about 500 clients per year, half of which are newly diagnosed, so keeping funds coming in provides hope and support for locals affected by cancer. Despite Daffodil Day not being able to proceed this year, Nelson and Tasman locals are able to donate online. Simply visit: www. cancernelson.org.nz to make your donation. “Everything that is raised locally stays local,” says

Cancer Society Nelson centre manager, Michelle Hunt. Michelle. There are a range of different options available. People can choose to donate $5 (or you can select an amount) for Daffodil Day to provide hope to locals affected by cancer. Or you can choose to donate a: $5 cup of coffee, $25 petrol voucher, $35 counselling voucher, Countdown food voucher, etc. “We provide a lot of petrol and food vouchers – last year, we helped 110 families,” says Michelle. “For example, if you’re

getting chemo at Nelson Hospital and live in Motueka, we can potentially help with some of the petrol costs.” The dedicated team at Cancer Society Nelson has seen a ‘really high demand’ for counselling since the start of this year. “We have spent the majority of our funds for counselling already,” says Michelle. During lockdown, counselling is provided via zoom or phone. There are many other ways the organisation supports locals affected by cancer. “We run a yoga programme in Nelson and Motueka. Last year we had 600 people join this programme and each year, around 300 people join our support groups.” Cancer Society Nelson also does fun things in the school holidays for children whose parents have cancer. “In the last school holidays, we went to Bunnings and made bird houses.” Michelle says the Vintage Car Club were hop-

ing to hold their car rally a couple of weekends ago, to take families for a ride in a vintage car, but due to covid it had to be postponed. “This usually raises about $10,000 for cancer.” During lockdown and any of the alert levels, you can still contact the dedicated team at Cancer Society Nelson via email or phone. “We are still working, and are able to answer anyone’s questions,” says Michelle. “Cancer doesn’t stop – people still need to go to treatment and are maybe wondering about their treatment plans or their financial situation which during these times, could be even more stretched, especially if a household has to reduce down to one income.” To find out more, phone 03 539 1137, visit ‘Cancer Society Nelson’ on Facebook. To donate, go to: www.cancernelson.org.nz. People can also buy Daffodil Day merchandise online at: www.cancernelson.org.nz/shop.

Local lad sets up parkour sessions Jo Kent The popularity of parkour has really taken off in the region, and Wakefield enthusiast Cooper Girvin is such a big fan that he’s set up a weekly session group. “I practice before school, during break times and after school.” The 10-year-old says he even watches parkour videos on YouTube to learn tricks from professionals. Parkour is a training discipline where practi-

tioners aim to get from one point to another in a complex environment, without assisting equipment and in the fastest and most efficient way possible. “My mum and I came up with the idea of creating a parkour group for other children like me to join as there isn’t anything like it locally,” Cooper says. He set up ‘Parkour Social Fun’ in May and the group meet at various locations every Wednesday after school. “We have 16 members now,” Cooper

Chris Downey of Tuffnell Plumbing Drainage & Gas. Can I still connect to LPG? Yes, you can still connect. In its final recommendations to government, the Climate Change Commission did not propose a ban on new gas connections from 2025, but recommends an energy strategy be developed and the future role of gas energy is determined. Will LPG be turned off in the next few years? No. LPG will continue to be delivered to connected consumers until we have moved to new low and zero carbon gases, by around 2050.

Can I buy a new gas appliance with confidence? Absolutely. If you currently own an appliance that uses LPG, you will be able to use it for its expected lifetime, and replace if needed. What will happen to my gas BBQ? You can keep using your gas BBQ and buying LPG bottles. In the future, you’ll be able to use bioLPG instead of LPG to fuel the barbie. Or you may even be cooking up a feast on a hydrogen BBQ. Snazzy!

The Richmond Taekwondo Club smashed it at the Hyeon Mu New Zealand Open Taekwondo Tournament in Christchurch last week. Hamish Wybrow, Taekwondo Master for the Richmond Club, says they had an excellent overall result with 26 participants from the club competing. The club brought home a haul of medals - 38 in total. “We took home 11 golds, three silvers and a bronze from the ‘patterns’ competition,” Hamish says. “Fifteen golds, three silvers and five bronzes from ‘sparring’.” He says trophy winners were Jaco Van Straden, who received ‘Best Adult Colour Belt Fighter’, Nicola Haines for ‘Best Female Colour

NEWSLINE UPDATES KE E PI NG YO U I N FORM E D ABO UT N E WS AN D E VE NTS I N TH E TAS MAN DI STRICT

Where to find information For the most up-to-date information on Council services, visit our website, tasman.govt.nz. For information on alert levels, visit the Unite Against Covid-19 website, covid19.govt.nz. For updates on vaccine availability, clinic locations and how to book your jab, visit the Nelson Marlborough Health website, nmdhb.govt.nz. For information about the financial support available, visit the Ministry of Social Development website, msd.govt.nz. Remember, we can do this together – be kind, stay at home, stay in your bubble and save lives.

We are committed to providing the essential services – water, wastewater and rubbish collection – throughout the lockdown period. However, based on government advice, there have been some changes and some non-essential services are suspended.

Council services at Alert Level Four

Public toilets

Here's what you need to know about the current changes to Council services while we are under Alert Level Four. • All Council offices are closed but we are always available by phone on 03 543 8400.

While many public toilets around the District are closed at Alert Level Four, some facilities will remain open. They are all open 24 hours except Warring Carpark which is open 7.30 am – 6.00 pm daily. All open toilets have an increased cleaning regime in place.

• All libraries are closed.

• Wallace Street toilet, 20 Wallace Street, Motueka

• All community recreation centres, including the Richmond Aquatic Centre, are closed.

• Memorial Hall toilet, 12 Pah Street, Motueka

• All playgrounds and drinking fountains are closed. These are now taped off.

• Warring Carpark toilet, 36 Oxford Street, Richmond

• Moturoa / Rabbit Island Reserve is closed. This means no walking, cycling, horse riding or swimming in this area while we are at Alert Level Four. • All mountain bike parks and tracks are closed. The closures are to reduce the risk of rider injuries placing an extra burden on the health system and emergency services as well as eliminating areas where people typically congregate. • The Great Taste Trail is open, however the section of the Great Taste Trail that goes through Moturoa / Rabbit Island Reserve is closed as that reserve is closed. • All recreational boat ramps are closed. • If you are out walking your dog, it must be on a lead.

A message from Mayor Tim King

• All non-essential infrastructure projects have been suspended but essential maintenance and emergency work continues as needed.

The need to respond to the latest Covid-19 outbreak remains of utmost importance, particularly given the higher transmission rate of the Delta variant. I urge all residents to stay within their bubbles and follow health protocols to minimise the risk. We cannot afford to take a break from lockdown. This time is testing for the entire community, but this is a situation we have been through before, and we can do it again.

• Building inspections are suspended.

Public transport Bus services are for essential services staff and travel only. Payment is contactless through Bee Card. There will be safe distancing in place on buses and wearing a mask is required. A reduced bus timetable is operating. Routes 1 and 2 (between Richmond and Nelson) are on the Saturday timetable with additional 7.00 am and 7.30 am services. The Richmond and Stoke Loops are not operating at Alert Level Four.

Freedom camping Freedom campers should have travelled home by now. If you are unable to travel home for any reason, you must check into an official campground where facilities for proper hygiene are available. In some cases, financial support to cover accommodation costs may be available. Contact the Ministry of Social Development for more information.

Please be kind to essential workers Our essential workers are still very busy keeping the Tasman District running for us throughout the lockdown period. Jobs like looking after our water supply, clearing blocked wastewater pipes, making roads safe and collecting rubbish all still need to be done. Please don't interrupt their work or breach their bubble, just give them a wave of thanks if you see them out working.

Rubbish and recycling Kerbside rubbish collections continue as normal. Kerbside recycling collections continue as normal, but mixed recycling from yellow-top recycling bins will be sent to landfill. At Alert Level Four the sorting facilities cannot operate as it puts our staff at risk. We still collect recycling as an essential service; however, we don’t have the capacity to store all the District's recycling so it is sent to landfill. If possible and safe to do so, you have the option of storing your clean recycling materials at home for when the sorting facilities reopen. Resource Recovery Centres are closed to everyone except commercial customers offering essential services – no builders skips or non-essential waste. Contactless payment only (by account, or contactless card, no EFTPOS or cash). Normal opening hours but closed on weekends. Collingwood Resource Recovery Centre is open Thursday only, for essential services and pre-paid rubbish bags. Drop-off bins are available at the gates for disposal of pre-paid rubbish bags – but only if essential.

• Gladstone Road toilet, 22 Gladstone Road, Richmond • Wakefield Rec Reserve toilet, 40 Clifford Road, Wakefield • Wakefield Village Green toilet, 11 Whitby Way, Wakefield • St Arnaud toilet, 22 Main Road, St Arnaud • Murchison Rec Reserve toilet, 34 Hampden Street, Murchison • Fairfax Street toilet, 43 Fairfax Street, Murchison • Willow Street toilet, 16 Willow Street, Tākaka • Collingwood Hall toilet, 9 Tasman Street, Collingwood

Rates grace period Tasman residents who pay their rates over the counter but are unable to do so because of the Alert Level Four lockdown are being given a grace period. The first instalment of this year's rates was due on Friday 20 August. For the duration of the higher levels of Covid-19 restrictions, levels three and four, our Customer Service Centres will remain closed for physical payments. We will provide an additional five working days after lockdown ceases, when our offices reopen, for customers to make over the counter payments. Overdue payment penalties will be applied after that five day period. But remember another payment option is our secure online system. You can use any of the following methods, either from your bank account using account2account, or with Visa or Mastercard – just remember to use your valuation number as a reference. Visit our website for more information, tasman.govt.nz/do-it-online/payment.

COUNCIL HUI Due to Covid-19 restrictions, meetings will take place via Zoom Video conferencing. Visit tasman.govt.nz/meetings-calendar for details.
