Outrage over front yard rules Andrew Board More Nelsonians will be forced to walk away from building their dream home if Nelson City Council doesn’t back down on its new front yard rules say an increasing number of opponents to the changes. Last week Nelson Weekly reported on a Nelson couple that had to walk away from building their house on land they had purchased on Sanctuary Dr because the garage was too close to the footpath and the windows in their living area were too small to “passively survey the street”. The story was then picked up nationally and has attracted a strong wave of criticism from around the country, including from politicians, local home designers, builders and the general public. One elderly Tahunanui lady has

even offered to start a petition against the rules. Keni-Duke Hetet, the man who designed the home in question says the council has been “ridiculous” in its handling of the situation. “Basically two lovely, hardworking people got screwed by this council.” He says in his 12 years of dealing with the NCC it is the first time he has had a resource consent declined and its criticism of the design, including “the design and appearance of the dwelling would have an adverse effect on streetscape values” was odd considering he has designed six of the fourteen houses on the street. “So they are basically saying the design sucks but I’ve done most of the others on the street as well. How could this one suck when the

others didn’t?” Now images have emerged showing how the rules are open to the opinions of council staff. One home on Emano St had its garage accepted for resource consent, despite it appearing to have the same issues as the proposed Sanctuary Dr home. “Now tell me, how can this garage get the consent and this design on Sanctuary Dr fail? Tell me? Because I have no idea,” says Keni. Politicians have also weighed in to the debate over the rules. Nelson city councillor Eric Davy got in touch with the Weekly to say he backs his colleague Rachel Reese on her strong criticism of the rules. “These rules must be reversed as soon as practicable, a lenient approach to be taken for people wishing to build until that has been accomplished. The NCC might as well design and build a house that meets all the wants and then this can be copied for all new houses. That is how stupid things are getting. It is not up to the council to de-

That is my freedom of choice.” Rachel says the response to last week’s story has been phenomenal and the industry is up in arms. “I’ve had consistent feedback, my phone has been ringing off the hook. Nelson mayor Aldo Miccio says the council will take the concerns on board but there was an extensive consultation process with those in the industry. “This was a plan that wasn’t prepared by staff, it was a plan that was prepared by councillors [Derek] Shaw, [Ali] Boswijk, [Mike] Cotton and [Rachel] Reese. They are the ones who prepared and put forward the plan, then there was public consultation on this and newsletters were sent to all professionals, including architects.” He says if feedback continues to come in about the new rules problems they will look at alternatives. The rule change is currently under appeal from Nelson man Mark Lile, Rachel says the council should not contest the appeal. “There are some really good things in the rule but I said over and over that these ones aren’t. The council has the chance to change this, I hope they listen to the public and do the right thing.” What do you think? Email andrew@ nelsonweekly.co.nz or 027 UR VOICE

The proposed garage on Sanctuary Dr that was declined for a resource consent. Homes says the rule change could have a massive impact on their business. “We too have been struggling with the consequences of these decisions as a result of the setback ruling. It revokes a large portion of our standard plans, the most successful across New Zealand. This makes service costs [more] and reduces north living spaces. In essence whilst creating a streetscape value, it is then eroded by having less living space in the back yard.”

Local girl loses ID after she’s told it’s a fake Helen Bush

Local bar’s are playing their part in keeping underage drinkers out of Nelson’s nightclubs but their hardline approach is also forcing some legal customers out. Security staff are confiscating false ID’s produced at the door of Nelson’s nightclubs, using a receipting system created by HANZ and the police to not only block entry to underage drinkers but to ensure the person cannot attempt to use the ID again. By filling out the receipt and filing it with police along with the ID, bar staff are helping police return the ID to it’s rightful owner. Sergeant Steve Savage says the majority of false ID situations are a case of people using friends ID’s, ones they had found and even their own ID that has been modified. “Youths presenting friends ID’s or ID that they have found is a real problem, I can get up to 6 or 7 a week and that’s only the ones that get reported. Quite a few have been lost and when they come through it means we can try to return them to their rightful owner.” While it’s keeping out those who try to drink illegally, some legitimate drinkers are get-

This has seen one 19 year old refused entry after using legitimate identification when staff at a local nightclub decided she was not the person she said she was. After scrutinising Gemma Sampson’s identification at the door, security personnel said she was not allowed to enter the establishment and also confiscated her New Zealand drivers licence, stating she looked nothing like the photo and that she was using a fake. “When I handed my ID over the guy looked at my license and asked if I had any other form of identification. I didn’t and he then took it away.”

Despite Gemma explaining to the staff that the photo on the ID was infact her, she says there was no arguing with them. “He said, I’m sorry if it is you, but the photo doesn’t look like you.’ Then it was gone.” Although the episode has left Gemma feeling frustrated she says she would still go back to the bar, provided the same situation doesn’t occur. “I don’t want to go back and be embarrassed if they say it’s a fake ID or it’s not me again.” Steve says he has encountered similar situations where legitimate ID has been confiscated but says bar staff are simply “doing it in good faith and are hot on it to avoid breaching the Sale of Liquor Act”.

Errol McKenzie’s love for boats began when he was just a child, going out for trips with his grandfather Ernest Johnson – the original founder of the Boat Shed. Now he is more of a motor collector, and will be taking his outboards to the 14th New Zealand Antique and Classic Boat Show in Lake Rotoiti this weekend, along with an original Johnson clinker dinghy. His most notable outboard motor is a 1974 Seagull which has never been used and never will be. Errol says the seller had it stored away in a shed, but he was unsure why it had never been used. “He bought it for a new boat but he just never got around to fitting it. So it just sat there for years from 1974 until now,” says Errol, who will be attending the show for the sixth year. “I take it up every year and put it on a stand. I’m not going to use it; it’s just too good to do that to.” When questioned as to why he will never use it – which was obviously the purpose for the motor, Errol says he wants to keep it in prime condition. “That’s the thing these days, you go to buy a second hand one and it needs to be done up and repainted. This is just a classic. I don’t want to use it. I had ten Seagull motors at one stage but this one I’ll never use.” Errol, who like many Nelson boat-lovers, is a member of the Picton Clinker & Classic Boat Club, says the show in Lake Rotoiti is by far the best of its kind in the country.

Errol McKenzie will be entering a 1948 Clinker dinghy made by his grandfather, at this weekend’s NZ Antique and Classic Boatshow. Photo: Phillip Rollo. Event founder Pete Rainey believed it has carved a niche in the national boating calendar. “Owning a classic boat, whether it’s an early Hamilton jet, a cedar kayak or a new steam boat built to traditional design is inevitably a labour of love,” he says. “Owners really relish the opportunity not only to show off their own boat but to relive the complex restorations with others who have taken the same time-intensive trip.” The programme is for displays on land in the morning, with activities and races on the lake from 1pm both days. Judg-

ing will take place on Saturday, ahead of an evening awards ceremony at the Alpine Lodge. At stake is the Jens Hansen Trophy where the judges are after good looks as well as history, construction and a boat with a story to tell. Other awards include prizes for best new restoration, best steamboat, best jetpropelled craft and best themed display. Races will be held for yachts, row boats, seagull motored dinghies, poppers, canoes, child rowers and swimmers. For further information visit www.nz classicboats.com.

Painted fish to help Stoke streams Brightly coloured fish have been painted on footpaths around Stoke in an effort to raise awareness about what is put in the town’s waterways. Nelson City Council staff are trialling painted fish motifs beside stormwater drains as part of a wider education campaign to remind people that all outside drains are for rain only. Contaminants such as detergents, paints, oils and gardening chemicals can get into drains and go directly into nearby streams and out to sea, harming fish and other aquatic life. The trial is part of the Stoke Streams Rescue Project designed to improve water quality in Stoke streams. Local member of the Isel Charitable Trust Paula Draper says she was supportive of the project because a nearby stream in Isel Park needed to be protected. The initiative saw fish painted around the Maitland Ave and Marsden Rd block. The group aims to hold a neighbourhood volunteer day in March to paint more fish.

Wrights prepare to boot out village residents

At least three residents of Waimea Village have been given 28 days to pay up or face being kicked off the land they lease. The termination of lease notices were issued to at least three residents by owners of the village Michael and Carolyn Wright late last week and they say there will be more to come this week. The notices are the latest in the long and nasty levy fee dispute between the owners and the 172 home owners at the village that now has them preparing for a court case later this year over alleged misappropriation of levy money by the Wrights. The battle started in late 2010 when the Wrights proposed increasing the monthly fee that the residents pay for the leased land from $80 to $190. Last year they proposed raising it to $284 but an arbitrator set it at $182.75 with another proposed increase expected any day. Residents say the increases are unfair as they already own their homes and pay normal council rates and other costs. They say they get little in return for the fees and many have vowed not to pay any more than last year’s levy, $125.

But that gives the Wrights an opportunity to try to kick them off the land they lease. Michael refused to comment when asked by the Nelson Weekly what would happen if they hadn’t paid in 28 days, he referred the paper to the lease which states any property on the site can be sold by the Wrights and the land re-leased with the money made from the sale used against the balance of money owed. “We have to go by the lease, it’s unfair if everyone else pays and then there are certain people who decide for whatever reason that they’re not going to pay,” he said. Waimea Village residents’ committee chair, Jerry Rowland, says the committee does not condone the acts of those not paying but he has serious issues with the way the Wrights have gone about the conflict. “Some of these people are now really struggling financially and with many of them elderly and on a fixed pension I don’t know how many of them will be able to cope.” The committee’s lawyer recommends that people pay the money, with the portion allocated for repairs and replacement put in a separate account.

Baby needs to heal his own heart Your Community Newspaper

Phillip Rollo

The Helliwell family face an agonising wait over the next few years, after their second son Jackson picked up a life threatening virus that cannot be operated on. Diagnosed with dilated cardiomyopathy, the now-seven week old boy will have to heal his own heart, be on a concoction of medication every day and avoid any sort of illness. “The thing with this whole condition is they don’t know which way it’s going to go. A third of kids will fully recover from it, a third will kind of bobble through life and live a pretty mediocre life on medication and a third of children won’t make it,” says mother Brenda, who had just spent five weeks in Auckland at Starship Hospital and Ronald McDonald House with her newborn, and husband Dion. “It’s not going to be a days and weeks thing; if his heart is going to heal it will take time. We were hoping to see some change but we’re stoked he didn’t go backwards.” The virus “was random” and has resulted in an enlarged heart that has been weakened, meaning it cannot contract to the ability that it should. Dion noticed Jackson was feeling unwell after his breathing rate increased, he was no longer interested in feeding and his skin colour turned pale. The midwife was called and she immediately sent Jackson to hospital “She took one look at him and called the hospital and said ‘guys get on your way’. “The A&E nurse was standing there saying ‘come on’ so that was an indication that things were pretty bad. Up until that he seemed like a healthy baby.” Jackson was then picked up by the Life Flight plane and taken straight into Starship Hospital, where he has spent more than half of his life. The Helliwell family say they have been overwhelmed with the amount of support they received at Ronald McDonald House and from the local community. “It’s been so humbling that so many people were moved by Jackson’s story and what we were going

Baby Jackson Helliwell with his parents Dion and Brenda. Photo: Phillip Rollo. through. We received many thoughtful gifts.” The fact that Jackson has been sent home is a good sign, according to the family, who say there will be more tests done during the week. “He is under the watchful care of the paediatrician in Nelson Hospital and there will also be a Starship specialist visit him.” Some everyday tasks will have to change for the family and there will be hand sanitizer at the door for visitors

while sick guests are not allowed to visit. “The goalposts certainly moved big time for us but we’re adapting and recognize with love all the people who are behind us and supporting us.” Have you or your family been through something similar? Harte of a lion Your Community Newspaper

Another Nelson Lions foundation member has been recognised for his services to the group, receiving its highest honour – the Melvin Jones Fellow award. Mick Harte, a resident at Ernest Rutherford retirement village, had been involved for 48 years before stepping down last year. He held most positions with the Nelson Host Lions Club during that period, including being president and zone chairman twice. Mick, who owned a shoe shop in town, decided to join the club as a way to give something back to the community. “I liked doing the candyfloss and the sausage sizzle, you know? Those sorts of things,” he says. He was heavily involved in establishing the Lions Playground at Tahunanui Beach, raising $21,000 for the changing rooms. Another significant role he had within the Lions was the creation of a “leo” club for juniors and he was a regular contributor the club’s newsletter. His son Michael’s fondest memory was the candyfloss that was sold from the canteen at the playground. “There were always boxes of Lions stuff around the place. He’d always be tapping away on his typewriter doing the newsletters. He had total commitment to it and to achieving their goals.” Nelson Host Lions president Colin Borcousky says Mick was always an active member of the club and that his contribution to the region has been significant. “Whenever there was a working bee Mick was there. Whenever there was something to do Mick was there and basically that’s what it boils down to. We decided his efforts needed recognised.”

Offences could lead to loss of guns The campaign to curb drunken disorder in Nelson City may be making progress, but police are set to up the ante. Nelson Bays Area Commander Inspector Steve Greally has issued a warning to firearms licence holders, particularly aimed at young males, that coming to the attention of police on any occasion could put their licence at risk. Steve says a process had been implemented whereby licence holders would be flagged as soon as they came to attention. “For low level offending, first time they will get a letter explaining that their behaviour is putting their firearms licence at risk. If they re-offend they will be up for consideration of revocation.” Serious offenders could be revoked immediately. Steve says he believes the move would strike a chord, particularly with young males who valued the right to go hunting. “We’ve seen that some of these people don’t make any connection between breaching a liquor ban while they’re out on the town and their right to own and use firearms. What we’re saying to them is that we believe your behaviour in every part of your life needs to be exemplary in order to retain the privilege of a firearms licence.” Steve says figures for Tasman Police District, which includes Nelson Bays, showed that 56 people had their firearms licence revoked last year.

New health board boss settles into top job The boss of the region’s district health board is now two weeks in the job and says he’s pleased with what he’s seen. The Nelson Marlborough District Health Board’s new chief executive, Chris Fleming, says he’s pleased to find strong partnerships in the district’s health sector and says the major challenge ahead is to maintain quality services within the funding

available. Chris – who has been in the health sector for 20 years – took up the post of chief executive of the largest employer in the Top of the South earlier this month and says he received a warm welcome from the board and colleagues in NMDHB. “What I have already noted is the strong level of clinical engagement around re-

gional activities. To get the best health outcomes for our population I believe the whole of the health system must work together with community health professionals, NGOs and the DHB all working in an efficient and effective partnership. “As a collective group we are responsible for the district’s performance in the national health targets while maintaining

and improving the quality of our services while living within our budget,” he says. He says there is concern regarding the financial position of the DHB and his objective is to continue to find long-term savings while providing the population with quality services. “Getting the balance right will be the pathway towards future success,” he says.

Country music comes to town

Birchwood Kindergarten students Mia O'Regan, 3, Riley Frost, 4, and Chali Routhan, 4, with the grassheads they have made ready to sell at their gala this weekend. The twilight gala will be held this Saturday from 4pm to 7pm and is a fundraiser for the local kindergarten. Local businesses have donated $2000 worth of goods to be sold with all profits headed back to the kindy. The event will be held on the kindergarten grounds and will feature a white elephant stall, free entertainment, face painting, pony rides, local craft stalls, food. Items the students have made will be up for sale too. Photo: Sinead Ogilvie.

A two day country music contest is being held at the Suburban Club this weekend and one of the entrants is hoping 2013 is the year she can take home some silverware. Paula Connor, who also has two children auditioning on Saturday, says there are usually 70 competitors across a variety of categories including old time, rock, and different variations of country. In each category, the entrant will sing a song for the judges and the public, with the two best going onto the 28th New Zealand Sun City Country Music Awards final’s day on Sunday. Paula will audition in the female open sections and is also doing group performances. She started her country music career as a ten year old, joining up

to a local club. “My parents liked country music and their friends were involved,” she says. “I liked singing at home and I sing all genres but we just liked entering these country contests.” She says the drive to do better has been the main reason for entering. “About half a dozen of times you meet up at these concerts and it’s great.” The event is put on by the Nelson Country Music Club and auditions are from 8am on both days. A weekend audition pass is $8 for adults and $5 for children under 18 years old. The price for the grand final show at 1:30pm on Sunday is $15 for an adult, $10 for a child and $40 for a family. There will also be a rock’n’roll competition on the Saturday, beginning at 7pm.

Big crowds attend winery concert Blankets were spread, picnics were packed and dancing shoes were on as around 3000 local music lovers attended the Classic Hits Winery Tour over the weekend. Two concerts were held on Friday and Saturday night at Neudorf Vineyards in Upper Moutere and organisers say it was another huge success, attracting “a great mixture of young, old and families”. Concert-goers attending the event were treated to performances by New Zealand favoruites Fat Freddy’s Drop, AnikaBoh&Hollie, The Adults and New Zealand’s Got Talent winner Clara van Wel. Promoter Brent Eccles says the event held at the Upper Moutere winery was a near full

house and was known as the event’s “spiritual home” because the first ever concert of the tour was held there. Roseanne Armstrong of Richmond says she spent most of the night up and dancing and Jacinda Stevenson of Tahuna says she and her family thought the event was outstanding. “It’s a divine summer event, the artists were amazing. We have been to this event before but it’s the first time we have brought the kids and they really enjoyed it.” The tour will continue on throughout the country and will finish in Hamilton on March 3.

SPCA ‘desperate’

The Nelson SPCA is in desperate need of adoptive parents for their adult cats and are now offering them to good homes for half price. SPCA manager Donna Walzl says kitten season has seen huge numbers of teenage and adult cats dumped at the SPCA, including 12 in one day not so long ago. She says they are now overrun and finding it hard to rehome them. “We struggle finding homes for the older ones as people tend to go for the kittens. A lot come in after people have moved and we get a lot of strays.” Shes says it’s often an advantage to adopt an older cat as they are already house trained, easy on furniture and don’t require the large amount of settling in time like a kitten. “There are so many cats here just waiting for a chance. There is a cat to fit into any family and they make the most loyal companions.”

Heavier trucks for Nelson streets

Lynette Cole, Celia Rodley and Annette Monti each have a little piece of the history behind the Dear Cottages on Rutherford St. Photo: Sinead Ogilvie.

Cottages' history uncovered Sinead Ogilvie A story that appeared in Nelson Weekly about six Nelson cottages which have stood side by side for 126 years has seen three local ladies, who each hold a piece of their history, come forward to say they hope the homes are here to stay. The six cottages sitting at the top of Rutherford St are dubbed the Dear Cottages and were built by a brickmaker William Dear in 1887. They have since become a recognised historical precinct and remain protected by the Nelson City Council and NZ Historical Places Trust, all keeping the same historical appearance from the day they were first built. Over the years the homes have seen many people come and go, as land title deeds show a history of seamen, widows, tradesmen, labourers and farmhands among home owners. A story appeared in the Weekly two weeks ago asking people to come forward and tell their stories of the cottages. Eight separate people called about the homes. Records show that William Dear went bankrupt in 1888, and moved to the

Waikato with his sons, leaving no remaining family members in Nelson. Local Nelson sisters Annette Monti and Celia Rodley who are descendants of William had no idea about their connection with the Dear cottages and say it was amazing to discover a missing link to their family when a local historian who had become interested in the cottages managed to track the family down. Annette says none of the Dear family had a clue about the cottages or the fact that their family had ever lived in Nelson and it wasn’t until the family moved to the area in the early 80s that they discovered they had roots there. “None of Dad’s siblings knew that their father or any family had ever lived in Nelson either – we presume the stigma of bankruptcy meant it was never mentioned.” Historian Ken Wright says he was fascinated by the history of the cottages and that inspired him to approach the Dears. “I was very interested in the Dear family because the cottages are a marvellous piece of early Nelson, it would be really good to see them continue to exist far into the future.”

Annette agrees and says she hopes the cottages continue to be looked after and protected for many years to come. “I think we already lose too much of our heritage and sometimes for no good reason. These have been built to last and it’s great to see them preserved.” Lynette Cole used to visit her grandparents Fredrick and Jessie Rawson as a preschooler every day at the cottage at number 218 Rutherford St in the 50s and says she enjoys the little piece of history the cottages give for her family. “Every time I go past them with my grandson I point the cottages out and say to him ‘that’s where my grandparents used to live’ it’s wonderful to be able to link the generations together in that way. I have very happy memories of those days. I love to drive past them and I hope they’ll be here forever.” All three women have been inside the homes as visitors and agree how uncanny it is to be connected to a significant piece of Nelson’s early history. “It’s a special moment walking into somewhere that you know your ancestor had an instrumental part in creating,” says Annette.

The move to allow heavier trucks on some of our city roads is likely to mean fewer of them on those streets, says Nelson City Council. NCC's infrastructure portfolio holder, councillor Gail Collingwood, says the trend of heavier trucks is a national response to increasing costs to the transport industry. While High Productivity Motor Vehicles (HPMV) are already on Nelson roads, they have not been allowed to carry full loads. “Being able to carry their full loads of more than 44,000 kilograms will mean there will not be as many of them,” says Gail. “We have to remember we do not have a railway link here and trucks are here to stay.” A presentation from the logging industry to the Nelson Regional Transport Committee claimed the new heavier vehicles will mean 23 per cent fewer trucks on roads approved for higher mass HPMVs. The New Zealand Transport Authority gives permission for all HPMVs on state highways, while local authorities are responsible for approving the trucks on their local routes. The council has agreed on a number of routes for the heavier trucks, mainly roads which link to the industrial areas of Stoke, Tahunanui and Nelson.

Locals looking after locals since 1986

In 1986 the Ferguson brothers established the Waimea Finance Company to help get local people into their dream cars. They saw a need for their customers at Brent Ferguson Motors to have a safe, secure way of using a loan to buy a reliable vehicle and decided to do it themselves. After opening officially as Waimea Finance in Richmond and amalgamating with Fico Finance in Nelson setup by Geoff Lawes in 2002, the two businesses came under one as you see them today. 27 years later the business has expanded into financially helping people from all walks of life throughout our town and further afield. With the community at its heart and being the major sponsor of the Fico Finance Nelson Giants, the business is small enough to know you by name and can put together a tailored loan package to meet your needs. Their business experience means you get the best loan arrangements, you can talk with the decision maker and you get genuine, old-fashioned service from someone who knows the ins and outs of finance. Now based in their new premises on Hardy St, opposite the museum, Fico Finance can offer a variety of loans to suit your requirements. Whether it’s a personal, vehicle, boat, plant or machinery, or mortgage loan, a leasing arrangement, or something else, talk to the team at Fico Finance.

Raffle winner takes out derby Phillip Rollo Gavin Peterson admits he probably wouldn't have entered the Classic Hits Demolition Derby had he not won a car in a raffle drawn just days before the event. But he was quietly happy with himself after avoiding enough carnage to be the last man standing at the Tahuna Holiday Park Speedway on Saturday night, earning $500 for his efforts – which isn't a bad return on a raffle ticket that costs just a few dollars. "I wasn't going to enter but the raffle was drawn on Friday so I was in," he says. "The car didn't miss a beat." Gavin, who is a member of Dale Ewers' pit crew, had entered the demolition derby five times previously, having finished as high as second around 20 years ago. "It was probably ten years since I've done it but it hasn't changed." His staying-out-of-trouble tactic paid off with his car being the least notably damaged of the final five, which wove through the wreckage of dozens of written off derby cars before the last two were cornered on the back straight. "Definitely want to stay out of trouble but depending on where you are on the track you might get a hit and that's it but I wanted to protect the front of the car because the radiator and the battery are right there," he says. Gavin says he targeted the area that would kill the battery of his opponent, when he went on the attack. The number of regular speedway drivers entered in the demolition was down this year, although overall entry numbers was still consistently high.

and they were handed out to them on Saturday, finals day for the Nelson touch competition. "We've got a good crop of young guys coming through, we have another 13 year old, Karl Ratcliffe, who is showing great potential and we have another couple around 18 years of age so it's great." The two Nelson College students refereed four games each on Saturday, two semifinals and two finals. Mark says the pair would have had their badges at least a year earlier had they not been away from a main city, as an assessor had to travel to confirm their ability.

Two 13 year old boys have been awarded their national level 1 badges as touch referees, the youngest to do so in the region. Matt French and Thomas Yarrall have been refereeing for several seasons and had to complete a written module as well as perform on the pitch to earn the award. The badges mean they are qualified to referee at national tournaments, on top of the usual games at the Nelson competition at Tahunanui. Mark French who has been involved with running the game in Nelson for years says the pair have worked hard to achieve the badge

This meant that you had to be out on the water doing the hard yards to reap some reward. Having to be present at the business end of the day, helped create a great atmosphere for the Snapper Classic, get sponsors plenty of mileage and build lots of interest for next year’s competition. Nelson has not had a competition for a number of years now and both clubs look forward to getting it up and running on a regular basis. In what would also be a first for a Nelson based competition it is envisioned in next year’s classic that rather than weigh fish in, measuring boards would be used. Fish would be photographed as proof and the competition based on length. So look out for a newer, bigger, more competitive Tasman Bay Snapper Classic next year. This weekend is the Dawnbreakers annual in house Havelock Snapper challenge. To make sure you will always be eligible for any competition we are involved with, come and join the Dawnbreakers Fishing Club and be ahead of the pack. Nelson’s Jim Wiseman has claimed gold at the New Zealand Masters Games in Wanganui, with his petanque doubles partner Art Vernon. Jim says the pair have been playing together for several years and are previous champions of the South Island Masters Games but this is the highlight of their career. Art – who has been a casual member of the Nelson club for years and is moving to Nelson next month – joined Jim for their first tournament in the North Island. They played at several clubs on the way to the games in Wanganui where they beat players recently named in the New Zealand team. “We met and beat a lot of good players up there on the way through to Wanganui. So we were quite rapt and feeling quite confident actually,” says Jim. The pair then only dropped one game out of the 11 they played at the tournament, winning the final over a pair from Tauranga, 13-9. Jim and Art were the only competitors from the South Island at the games and he says it was a huge thrill to win the tournament. “It was expensive, motels, rental cars and the rest of it but it was worth it. This [the medal] makes it worth it. We now

Photo: Andrew Board. know where our level is and it’s not too bad actually.” Nelson Petanque Club president Maria Clinton says the win was a great achievement and the club was extremely proud of Jim and Art’s efforts. “I don’t think a lot of people realise now good an achievement this is. It’s a great win.” She says the Nelson club is thriving with new members but she

is keen to see more come along and all new members who sign up in March will receive a free set of boules, whether it’s for competitive petanque or social. “We play every Wednesday and Sunday at 1.15pm at our Para Para Rd courts and everyone is welcome to come along and see what it’s all about.” For further information call 548 9006.

Tasman Bay has been blessed with some absolutely stunning weather as of late. Sea conditions have been at their best and settled weather looks like it’s here for at least another week, so make the most of it while it lasts. Last weekend saw the inaugural Tasman Bay Snapper classic hosted by the Dawnbreakers Fishing Club and the Tasman Bay Cruising Club. Tasman Bay was the base for this competition, with the idea being that this would level out the playing field between those that couldn’t travel as far as the bigger boats and also the fact that the winning fish could be caught as close as The Cut. The event came together quite quickly and to ensure it was manageable, the organisers limited the competition to members of both clubs and to sponsors. Even so numbers still reached in excess of 130 competitors. The format for the classic was that there would be prizes for the top 10 snapper, average snapper, largest tuna, kingfish, kahawai and gurnard. It also included a junior section, as well as a Champions cup for teams of 4, that combined to have the heaviest weight of snapper. With some great prizes on offer it was a competition not to miss. The teams event was won by Wurth A Shot NZ with a combined snapper weight of 8.94kg. Ensuring they have bragging rights over a lot of other highly skilled teams till next year. Brett Greer won the main prize, a $3500 Furuno GPS chart plotter sponsored by Electronic Navigation, with a 3.99kg snapper caught near Cable Bay. Other prizes went to junior Jiles Lavington, snapper 1.17kg, Craig Merrion kingfish 7kg, Linda Glew Albacore Tuna 10.18kg, Gurnard Angela Elliot 0.82 kg, Kahawai 2.48kg Gareth Rosser. The team of Henry Neas, Ben Petley, Elliot le Petit, Ben Hazlett and Aiden MacKenzie will now go onto the South Island tournament in Timaru this weekend. Mixed grade winners Waimea College will not attend the event, despite beating Golden Bay and Garin College in the round robin stage. The girls event was held yesterday in Blenheim. Special Olympics a huge success must attend the regional competition first. The regional competition follows on from a ribbon event. The regionals are held in certain locations every four years. The upper South Island event featured athletes from between Ashburton and Manawatu. Athletes that performed with distinction will qualify for the national event. Lois is expecting to take around 35 competitors, who will then aim for world qualification. “But not everyone that has qualified will go.” At the regional competition, athletes represented Nelson or their individual schools. “They win medals for themselves though, of course. It’s a hard system to understand but each athlete is divided into categories that suit their own ability and those include age and gender based. We want to give everyone a fair and even chance of doing well.”

Touch team chases double The Scowans remain on track for a rare touch rugby double after winning a thrilling final 2-1 at the Nelson module on Saturday. The men’s side will now turn its attention to the Richmond module, where they are expecting an easier ride after edging last year’s defending champions Fieldmarshalls in Tahunanui thanks to tries from Conna Trathen and Fletcher Matthews. Team captain Yane Teinakore says the win was a long time coming from the group of friends that had been regularly entered in the top men’s grade. “Yeah definitely. It’s been a few years since we won it. We’ve had four losses in the final since we joined together straight from college,” he says. Yane believed a larger squad paid dividends with most of the players also taking part in the mixed grade final just minutes prior. “Today was a good blow out and it was a good warm up for next week. We’ve kind of struggled through the year

with numbers because guys have other things on but now we have a squad of 14.” Scowans player Kaide Whiting believed Nelson College, which they beat in the semi-finals, were hard done by the fact they lose Year 13 students halfway through the season. “They only lost one game all season and the format changed when some other teams came up a grade, because we thought they were going to qualify top.” Yane echoed his comments, saying the 4-3 win was probably the harder of the two matches. Kaide says the side had never won two modules in the same year, and it was one of only a few that even had the opportunity as it was uncommon for the same squad to enter in both competitions. The other major finals winners were Ken’s Chicks which comfortably saw off Nelson College for Girls in the women’s grade while THC were too good in the mixed final. Jacal Bogans won the fourth division.

The regional special Olympics was held in Nelson over the weekend, giving athletes with intellectual disabilities an opportunity to participate in a wide range of sports and obtain qualification through to the national final. It was the first time in ten years that the event came back to Nelson with sports such as swimming, athletics, basketball, bocce, bowls, power lifting, golf and ten pin bowling being played. Event organiser Lois Aitkenhead says the numbers of competing athletes was up by around 100 people this year. “The highlight was definitely the participation of the athletes. They all enjoyed competing and meeting their old friends again. The whole thing was a brilliant success,” she says. Athletes wishing to attend the national competition, which is being held in Dunedin later this year,

MECHANICAL FITTER

We currently have a role available for a mechanical fitter. Predominately working in the fuel industry you will need to have proven mechanical experience with an eye for detail. The role requires regular “out of town” travel and therefore you will need to be self-managing with the ability to manage subcontractors at times. Your approach to HSE must be exemplary and focused to provide quality work to our clients. While fuel experience is not essential it would be desirable, as skills from similar trades can be easily transferred into the cutting edge requirements of the fuel industry. Please forward your Letter of Introduction and CV to:
