Nelson economy on the up A strong regional economy and growing business confidence are creating jobs throughout Nelson-Taman resulting in one of the lowest unemployment rates in the country. Statistics New Zealand’s Household Labour Force survey for the September quarter showed that the unemployment rate for the region was just 3.9 per cent, well below the national average of 6.2 per cent. That’s down from 4.2 per cent in June this year and the 4.5 per cent recorded for the same quarter last year. Nelson Regional Economic Development Agency chief executive Bill Findlater says we traditionally have had the lowest unemployment but the economy is picking up and businesses are becoming more confident and that’s also having an impact on the figures. “It’s been a better year for us,” Bill says. “I’m struggling to find any doom and gloom at

Rosy weather for Broadgreen The community took some time out to smell the roses on Sunday afternoon, at the annual Broadgreen Rose Day. Crowds of people flocked to the event that is held to celebrate when the roses at Broadgreen House in Stoke come into full bloom. The community enjoyed entertainment, stalls and the historic homestead was also open for viewing. Nicky Neiman of Stoke says she attended the event after enjoying last year’s one. “The weather is so lovely why wouldn’t you? The rose gardens are looking really stunning. It is a great event.”

the moment.” Bill says the region’s primary industries are driving the economic recovery with horticulture “having a better year” and the forestry industry benefitting from high log prices. “When the primary sector has a good year it spreads through the whole region,” Bill says. Port Nelson’s business development manager Rob Hawkes says their log exports are booming on the back of high log prices with exports through Port Nelson and Picton reaching record levels. “We are seeing log prices higher than in 2011 which was the acknowledged industry high,” Rob says. “The Chinese economy is booming and that’s driving log prices up.

“It looks busy enough to me. Everywhere I go it’s always busy.”

“I don’t know anyone whose business is booming. The places I associate with, most of them are always empty.”

“I think throughout the week town looks busy. There does seem to be more people around but it is that time of year.”

“I don’t think so. I think it is starting to pick up but it’s still got a long way to go.”

Nelson economy is ‘booming’ FROM PAGE 1 “We are averaging 35,000 to 50,000 tonnes of log exports a month in Nelson which is up 10 to 15 per cent on last year.” Rob says the high volumes of log exports are expected to continue through until the second or third quarter of next year. Bill says a building boom and opening of a number of big retail stores is also creating jobs. Construction is picking up while employment in the retail sector was given a boost with the opening of the new Kmart store which has created 90 new jobs. A further 60 jobs will be created when The Warehouse opens its new store in Richmond next July. But while Coman Construction had projects in Richmond, Stoke and near the airport, contracts manager Ben Coman didn’t believe there was a building boom at the moment. He says the current climate was showing signs of

improvement, but that was in contrast to the slow period the industry had recently experienced. “I’d say by no means are we in a building boom yet. Certainly there are signs of improvement with the amount of building activity about but we’re not in the middle of a building boom.” The fishing and fish processing industry is also creating jobs with Talley’s personnel manager Greg Cox saying they are presently seeking staff for their mussel processing plant. Talley’s employs 140 staff for the mussel processing season and is having trouble finding enough workers from the NelsonTasman region to fill their vacancies “It’s been very consistent for the last couple of years although the season seems to be getting longer. It starts in October runs through to June so it certainly draws down on the unemployment for six or seven months.” Greg says Talley’s employs around 400 staff at

its plant in Motueka. Nelson Pine Industries managing director Murray Sturgeon says staffing levels at their Lower Queen St plant, which processes wood products including medium density fibreboard, has been steady at 215. However, Murray says that number represents a gradual increase from the 200 staff it employed after shedding 50 staff as a result of the global economic recession in 2009. “We have employed a couple of new guys for our programming work but otherwise workforce is very stable,” Murray says. Murray says the outlook remains positive with the MDF plant that “just keeps running at full capacity” and its laminated veneer lumber plant’s products sold out to February of March next year. Bill says the only real concern for the NelsonTasman economy was the high exchange rate. “If the exchange rate came down we’d really be taking off,” he says.

Nelson’s potential hazards revealed More than 5000 Nelson residents have received letters outlining potential hazards to their homes, including liquefaction, flooding and contaminated land. Nelson City Council last week released the latest information from its study into hazards for the region and it includes possible liquefaction affecting around 1650 homes if a massive earthquake struck. Almost 1700 homes could be affected if the Maitai River flooded and 2800 homes could be affected by being built on a site that was previously used for hazardous activities, like an apple orchard where spraying may have taken place. All of the homeowners received a letter outlining what the new information meant to them and letting them know that a note would be added to their property information held by the council. That information is available for potential home buyers via a LIM report at the council. But the council was quick to make sure people understood the risk of such disaster hasn’t increased, they are just more aware of what would happen if it did. “Homes are not more likely to be affected than they

Vet called in for Barney

Lewis Stanton’s horse Barney collapses and he’s involved in screaming match

MoTorcYcliST DiES: A 45 year old motorcyclist died on Saturday afternoon after a collision with a van travelling in the opposite direction. Scott Robert Healey, of Porirua, died at Nelson Hospital as a result of his injuries. The accident happened on Kerr Hill Rd in Golden Downs and he was airlifted to the hospital. NEW rEAl ESTATE firM: New Zealand Sotheby’s International Realty, which has its head office in Queenstown and offices throughout the country, opened its Nelson office on Trafalgar St yesterday. The expansive new showroom, next to Cafe Affair will be spearheaded by Simone Henbrey, alongside local registered real estate salesperson Wendy Lindbom as administration support. Ark fUNDrAiSEr: The Nelson ARK is hosting a movie fundraiser this Thursday. It’s to help raise money for its programme that pairs unwanted dogs up with teenagers during a school term. The fundraiser will be held at the Suter Theatre and it will cost $15 to watch the movie Enough Said, featuring James Gandolfini and Julia Louis-Dreyfus. Doors open at 7pm.

Nelson’s colourful horseman Lewis Stanton has a new base to park his horse Barney but it hasn’t been a pleasant start with two major screaming matches in as many days and his horse Barney collapsing. Lewis is now parked on Selwyn Pl, outside the Cathedral gardens, after months parked on Bridge St and before that 18 months protesting on Trafalgar St while his horse was held by Nelson City Council against his will. But on Wednesday and Thursday Lewis was involved in two major screaming matches, the second leading to a complaint of assault against him. And on Friday Barney suddenly collapsed while standing on Selwyn Pl, which caused concern to onlookers and his owner. A vet and the SPCA were called and Barney was given the all clear with just a few scrapes and bruises. SPCA manager Donna Walzl says she is unsure what caused Barney to collapse but the vet says he is in great condition and it may have been a falling piece of tree that spooked him, getting his back feet caught in

“I work in town and I park here, particularly on a Wednesday there’s a shortage of parks around here. I got this car park today and I noticed this car park had some old containers and some bags so I went over without comment and threw them on the footpath at this stage the man started shouting and ran over and assaulted me. That’s all. I didn’t shout at him, I did not do anything.” He says he saw it as his civic responsibility to move the “rubbish”. “If I see rubbish on the street, I always pick it up and shift it. It was a bit of a hazard and that car park belongs to the ratepayers. Any civic minded person would do the same. From my point of view I was simply moving rubbish and got assaulted for it.” Nelson City Council’s manager of communications, Angela Ricker, say the council has been and continues to work with Lewis and his lawyers to resolve the current situation. “The council appreciates everyone’s patience and is hopeful of finding a way forward in the near future.”

State house review ‘good’ for locals A shake up of the country’s state housing scheme could be welcome news for 35 local families who are currently waiting for accommodation to become available. A law change has been introduced making all state housing tenancies reviewable, meaning current and future tenants will be up for regular review to test their eligibility to stay put. Until now, only tenants who went into their state houses after July 1, 2011 were able to have their tenancies reviewed if their circumstances changed. The law change will mean cases like one the brought to light by Housing Minister Nick Smith last week will no longer slip under the radar. Nick spoke of a captain of a fishing vessel in Nelson whose income had increased and he was making more than $100,000 a year but still living in a state house. He labelled that particular situation as “wrong”. “Social housing is available for people while they have that high housing need, and as their needs change – they secure a better job, the children leave the nest – they can then free up that house for a

new family of higher need.” While the new law could mean some locals will be packing their bags, it is good news for the 35 applicants who are currently recognised as high need and on the waiting list for state housing. All 563 current tenants of state housing in Nelson will be up for review, though no decision has been made yet on how the process will work. Tenancy reviews are among a raft of changes around New Zealand’s social welfare, including a handover that will see Work and Income assess and manage the social housing needs of all low income residents. The agency will carry out screening, assessment and eligibility reviews and manage the waitlist as well as referrals to housing providers. The changes come on the back of a crackdown on benefit fraud that resulted in eight Nelson Tasman residents being successfully prosecuted for overpayment in the last financial year, to the total of $261,994.

Visiting orca pod ‘awesome to see’ A pod of orca swam through Nelson Haven last Thursday, delighting hundreds of locals who caught a glimpse of the whales. They came within metres of those taking part in the Port Nelson Sea Swim and swam under a boat carrying Iron Duke Sea Scouts, who were

out practising their “man over board” drills. Maru Kenny of the scout group said the whales swam under the boat he was in and attracted the attention of several other boats that were sailing in the vicinity. “It was pretty awesome, we saw a strange puff of water to start with then realised what they

Walking the talk against family violence A mass walk from Trafalgar St to Tahunanui beach will be held this weekend in support of stopping violence against women. Soroptimist International of Nelson and Waimea in conjunction with Te Rito Network are hosting the walk and say they want as many people as possible to join them. The walk starts from 1903

Square on Trafalgar St from 10am and will head to the Tahunanui Playgrounds via Haven and Rocks Rds. Soroptimist Nelson president Rachael Taylor says their group advocates for women and one of its goals is to eliminate violence against women and girls. Adele Richardson of the Te Rio Family Network says they work in the community to raise the

profile and understanding of family violence so the walk was a perfect fit. “It has been a wonderful experience for us to partner with Soroptimist International and work together on our shared vision for eliminating violence in our community. To join the walk simply turn up to 1903 Square on the morning and join in the fun.

The story of a Nelson jewellery shop and its charismatic founder has been selected as one of New Zealand’s greatest stories. To celebrate its 150th birthday this month the New Zealand Herald sent journalist David Fisher and photographer Mark Mitchell across the country to speak with a variety of kiwis and to uncover their unique and inspiring stories for the “greatest road trip” series. Only one Nelson story made the list (a travesty in the opinion of Nelson Weekly) and it was that of Jens Hansen and the jewellery shop that is now run by his son Halfdan. David spoke with Halfdan for a piece that featured in today’s Herald and online at nzherald.co.nz. Halfdan says it was great to have the Herald pick his father as one of

the country’s best yarns. “I think his story as an immigrant coming to New Zealand and making good is what I think resonates.” Jens went on to establish his jewellery business in Nelson and make the “one ring” for the Lord of the Rings movies, pushing the business into the world spotlight. Halfdan says he is proud of his father’s legacy making the studio one of Nelson’s top tourist destinations. “And it’s undeniably because of the movie ring connection. But it also gives us a great popular legacy that my dad has left. Before that he was well known as an artisan, craftsman jeweller but it was a small arty audience and now he has this popular legacy that he will probably be remembered for first by a wider audience.”

Cause of dead fish still unknown

Thousands of fish were found dead in the Maitai River last week but Nelson City Council is still unsure what caused it. The fish were discovered washed up on the banks of the Maitai River on Friday and the council issued a warning to avoid

fishing in the area while it investigated the dead fish that afternoon. Yesterday the council released a statement saying they were still unsure what caused the suspected poisoning but test results of the water and the dead fish should be back

by early next week. They said the river conditions appear to be back to normal. “Staff continued to monitor the situation throughout the weekend and there were no further incidents of fish dying. The river environment appears to have

returned to normal,” says the council’s communications manager Angela Ricker. On Friday the council said the good health of other species in the river indicated that the risk to the public was low but it wanted people to be cautious.

Boulder Bank protest over oil drilling

More than 100 Nelsonians joined in a national protest against deep sea oil drilling by lining part of the Boulder Bank on Saturday. The protestors stood in solidarity with the Oil Free Seas flotilla, which is protesting at the site of New Zealand’s first potential deep sea oil well off the Raglan coast. They posed with many banners by the lighthouse and even had big letters that could be seen from shore, saying “Stop deep sea oil”. Personal messages from members of the flotilla were read out to the assembled group. One of the messages was emailed the night before by Scott Davidson from Nelson, who is currently sailing on the S/V Friendship just outside the 500m exclusion zone around the drill ship Noble Bob Douglas. Scott said being part of the flotilla was one of the “most important things he had done in his life”, says organiser Verena Maeder. Saturday’s event was organised by local group Clean Energy Action, and tied in with a national day of action that saw thousands of people protest against deep sea oil and Anadarko on North Island beaches.

has to deal with so many issues like land ownership and funding. Chairperson of the Cycle Trails Trust, which is responsible for marketing, maintaining and seeking new funding for the trail, Gill Wratt, agrees that reaching Kaiteriteri and then completing the loop are critical to its success. “When we get to Kaiteriteri it will make it a more marketable ride and we can start to promote it nationally. Once the loop is completed then we can really start to say it is an international bike ride.” Gill says extending the trail from Wakefield through to Kohatu will also be a key part of the project because riding through the disused Spooner's Tunnel will appeal to a lot of cyclists. The council development engineer Dugald Ley says they are on target to reach Kaiteriteri by Christmas although a small section will have to wait until the realignment of the road at Turner's Bluff is completed. Cyclists will have to ride on the road for about 300m until the realignment is finished and a cycle underpass is installed. Dugald says contractors are presently working on the trail near Aporo Rd after one of the key landowners, Alan Trent, agreed to allow the trail to go through his land. Another new development will be the installation of bike counters on the trail so that the trust can monitor the number of cyclists.

Mapua Ferry owner-operator Andrew Schwass can't wait for the weather to get warmer and the Tasman Great Taste Cycle Trail to get longer. Andrew is just starting the second season at the helm of the flat-bottomed ferry that provides a water bridge for cyclists between Rabbit Island and Mapua. After a slow winter when the ferry's sailings were limited to weekends, Andrew says business is picking up with summer sailing schedule now operating and around 250 passengers taking the ferry last Sunday. “It's a very seasonal business and we'll get more passengers when it starts getting warmer. The weekdays are still pretty quiet but we we're quite busy at the school holidays and we'll be busy again around Christmas.” However, what Andrew really wants is for the trail to reach the key destination of Kaiteriteri and then the final section from Kaiteriteri to Wakefield via the Motueka Valley to be completed. When it is finished, the Great Taste Cycle Trail will join Nelson, Richmond, Mapua, Kaiteriteri, Tapawera, Kohatu and Wakefield in a 175km loop. “At the moment we are getting mostly locals out riding and I don't expect the tourists to come until they can reach at least Kaiteriteri. It will be even better when the trail is finished and then it will become a real destination for tourists,” he says. However, he says the Tasman District Council is doing a good job of building the trail because they it

50 years of council experience moving on Simon Bloomberg Reporter

simon@waimeaweekly.co.nz After spending a big part of their lives serving the Nelson community as city councillors you’d think that Gail Collingwood and Derek Shaw would have some spare time on their hands. Not so. Derek and Gail may not be part of the new council elected last month but they both say they are now busier than ever. Derek, who was a councillor for 30 years, says his biggest priority is playing catchup on a number of publishing and writing projects that he put on hold while he was a councillor. The owner of a “small parttime” publishing business, Nikau Press, Derek is working on reprinting updated Gail Collingwood in her garden after retiring as a city councillor. “I took the approach that I was a councillor first and foremost so that always took priority. That meant it was always a tradeoff with what I could and couldn’t do.” Gail, who retired after 18 years as a city councillor, is continuing with a number of interests she had when she was on the council including her involvement with the National Council of Women, Genealogical Society, Fifeshire Foundation and China Friendship Society. She also has an unusual hobby, collecting old laundry irons. “I have about 400 irons which is not many compared to some collections. At the moment I’m helping set up an email network for all the people who collect irons in New Zealand - there are about 20 of us.” Gail is also pursuing some new roles including chairing the Nelson-Tasman Positive Ageing Forum. And, like Derek, has been appointed to the District Licensing committee and plans to spend more time in the garden. “I’ve just about got my garden under control again. The council can be so consuming you don’t always get time for those sorts of things.” Although Gail is enjoying her retirement she says it is taking a while to get used to life after council. “When I was a councillor I used to spend most nights reading documents of some sort so that I’d be prepared for the next day. Now, sitting down at night, I find my hand automatically reaching out to the table where I used to put those documents but of course there’s nothing there.”

Police Airport open and ready to party report

with Area Commander

Steve Greally

With my staff having attended two serious crashes involving motorcyclists over the weekend it seems timely to have a chat about bike safety. Motorcyclists are some of our most vulnerable road users and on a fine weekend like we’ve just had recreational riders are out in numbers. The grim reality is that a dream ride can all too easily turn to tragedy. Despite what many riders might think, the riders are at fault in the majority of crashes recorded in Nelson Bays. Last weekend a man in his 40s died after crashing coming down Kerr Hill in the Golden Downs. He was just enjoying a day out with friends when that crash happened and his family will live with that forever. Unfortunately he’s part of a growing statistic - middle aged men on high performance bikes who never make it home. In Tasman Police District we have had six motorcycle fatalities this year, three in Nelson Bays and the average age of those riders was 58 years. We talk about the fatalities a lot, but behind that are also disturbing numbers of people left hospitalised for months or even incapacitated for the rest of their lives. While travelling to Marlborough on Saturday the Police Traffic Alcohol Group members spotted a motorcyclist who wasn’t wearing a helmet. He was carrying a pillion passenger and when he saw police he made a stupid decision and took off at speed. The next police car to come across him clocked him at 160 kmh. By the time police found him and his female passenger they were lying on the side of the road - injured, but thankfully not dead. They had braked heavily to turn into a private driveway and lost control. This incident is at the extreme end of stupid. While the rider wasn’t wearing a helmet, his passenger was in a summer dress and jandals. He didn’t have a licence, the bike wasn’t roadworthy and we are still awaiting blood alcohol results. He showed reckless disregard for his and his passenger’s safety. Thankfully the vast majority of riders are sensible and responsible people. However, many over-estimate their riding ability and I’d really like to encourage all riders to eat a bit of humble pie and seriously consider taking part in one of the rider training courses. These courses aren’t just for bunnies and beginners. Really skilled people assess all aspects of your riding technique and give you tips that will ultimately make you a better and safer rider. The feedback I’ve had from people who have been riding for years is that they learnt a lot on the courses and they all highly recommend them. You can find information on the courses at either of the councils.

It’s not often the community gets a chance to join in a party of this significance, but to celebrate its 75th anniversary, Nelson Airport will open its doors to the public this weekend. The free event, to be held this Saturday at the Air Nelson hangar is aimed at sharing the milestone with the community and a full schedule of entertainment is planned. Nelson’s aviation history started with the landing of an Avro 504 in 1921 and has since flourished. Nelson Airport was constructed and opened and functioning in 1938 with the first commercial flight taking off on November 30 of that year.

It has become the fourth busiest airport in the country, rubbing shoulders with bigger centres such as Wellington, Auckland, Christchurch and Dunedin, with 800,000 passengers touching down and taking off every year. The open day will showcase the region’s aviation history and there will be 22 different aircraft on display, including a number of classic aircraft. The RNZAF will attend including the Air Force band, TV weatherman Jim Hickey will be there as MC and to meet the public and there will be a fly-over by classic fighters including Nanchangs and the only

known Avro Anson still flying. Along with DC3 and helicoptor rides available for purchase, there will be plenty of things to see and do for the whole family says Nelson Airport CEO Kaye McNabb, who labels the event as a rare opportunity for community celebration. “This is going to be a very big celebration of Nelson Airport for the people of Nelson. We invite everyone along to enjoy the day out and to help us celebrate the 75th anniversary.” Free parking is available by following parking officials on the day and the event kicks off at 10am and wraps up at 4pm.

Aero pioneer ready to celebrate airport's birthday Phillip Rollo Reporter

editorial@waimeaweekly.co.nz Thelma Bradshaw is somewhat of a pioneer. She had her commercial flying licence way back before airlines would employ women and she was the first lady in New Zealand to get a B Category Instructor Rating. But, even looking back on her decades in the pilot’s seat, there is certainly no tone of regret that her aviation exploits never materialised into a full-time job working for an airline. “I was just doing it because I was enjoying the subjects and I was learning. I didn’t think much about it but I sat exams and passed,” she says. “It was pleasure, leisure. I never intended to make it more than a hobby.” Thelma was born in Wales and moved out to New Zealand in 1950. She learnt to fly in Masterton at a local aero club, but it wasn’t “very active” and upon moving to Nelson in 1954 she decided to join the Nelson Aero Club of which she is now the patron. The Nelson Aero Club was reasonably new at that point, in fact, the Nelson Airport, which is celebrating its 75th anniversary this weekend, had only opened in 1938 after a push from the aero club. Thelma had never seen an aeroplane until she moved to New Zealand, and neither had her parents who were horrified that she wanted to become a pilot. “When you’re young you do silly things, you get carried away with an idea and I thought ‘oh exciting’. But it was just a fun thing.”

Stoke woman has 35 pen pals pleasure out of it. I only do emails if I decide it’s too expensive to print off some photos to send.” Tania says she can write up to ten letters a day and they often take her more than an hour as she decides how best to structure it. She says she has 12 that she needs to write within the next week as well as some Christmas presents to buy. “We swap Christmas and birthday presents which is neat. Some of them have the same hobbies as me so they may be able to get me something I haven’t seen before.” Despite having a huge collection of pen pals and occasionally suffering from a sore hand from all the writing, Tania says she wants to do it forever. “I’ve got friends all over the world now and it makes me happy. I get some really interesting post cards and I tell them all what’s been happening in Nelson.”

Bikes takeover Tasman Local motorcyclists turned more than a few heads when they attended Route 6 motorcycle club's Dice Run on Saturday. More than 90 motorcyclists took part in the 160km round trip, which saw the group travel en masse from Stables Richmond, the Kohatu pub, Sprig & Fern Motueka, the Playhouse in Mapua, before finishing for a prizegiving at the Abbey Bar & Cafe. As well as cash and other prizes for rolling the highest dice, at each stop the publican handed over a bottle of spirits that was awarded to the owner of their favourite bike.

One Stoke woman is doing her best to keep local posties employed, writing up to ten letters a day to some of her 35 pen pals. Tania Read, 30, got her first pen pal when she was 16 and “pretty down”. She found the Palmerston North friend via a page on Teletex and is still writing to her, along with 34 others. Her letters come from other parts of New Zealand as well as Canada, the United States, Finland, Australia, Germany, Austria, England, Singapore, Argentina and even Malta. She says the pen pals have given her friendship and a trip to the letterbox is always exciting. “Sometimes I get five letters in one day, that's always exciting.” She says she also emails and Facebook messages some of the pen pals but prefers the traditional method. “I think it's more personal and I just get the most

The organisation makes puddings to order as a way of fundraising for their community projects and on Saturday they completed a grand total of 230 puddings. The puddings, all baked in one day by the ladies at the Nelson College dining hall are a huge tradition and are just as popular as they were all those years ago says co-organiser Joy Oakly. She says the “secret mix” of cherries, brandy, eggs, flour, raisins and a few other mystery ingredients has been used ever since the project began and originally came from an American Soroptimist and is a favourite with many of their regular customers. “The production has become very efficient and refined over the years. However the numbers made have dropped from around 400 to 200 due to difficulties in getting ovens in which to cook the puddings. Initially they were

Art expo to highlight local talent The Tasman Visual Art Group's annual summer exhibition keeps getting bigger with this weekend's fifth edition at the Richmond Town Hall featuring almost 200 works. Group member Averill Moore says the popular exhibition has been well supported by their 70 members who have entered some amazing works. Although the majority of entries are paintings Averill says there will also be a range of crafts including ceramics, felt work and candle holders. “We have a summer and winter exhibition and each year we are getting more people exhibiting,” Averill says. “This is our fifth summer exhibition and it looks like being our biggest yet.” In addition to the two exhibitions, Averill says group members meet every Wednesday for a “plain air” painting session. The group also holds a meet-

Signs will remain at areas that have been baited with the poison but forestry users are reminded that they should be aware of the poisoning risk to their pets from eating baits or scavenging possum carcasses. An additional operation will be baited this Friday in the Old Sow area, near Dart River, the Wangapeka River and Tadmor Valley.

They have introduced a brand new variety of set menus for Banquet dinners catering for two or more people. And for December only you will save 10% on your total bill when you dine in the restaurant. It’s been an action packed year for Bill, who recently took on two additional chefs to help him keep up with the demand of the busy restaurant. Having a bigger team on board means that Eastern Cuisine are well equipped to handle large parties within the restaurant. While the revamped Christmas menu has many new tasty items, the old favourites are still there. The dining room fits anywhere between 60 to 80 people comfortably and anything goes when it comes to keeping your guests happy. suit any number of people or budget, whether you prefer to do a set menu or order ahead for the entire table, nothing is too hard to cater to. Bill has the full selection of Chinese favourites available including Peking Duck, which is an incredibly popular dish both within the Chinese community and Chinese food lovers. Bill will need a day or twos notice if you wish to order Peking Duck as it is prepared traditionally. There is also a superb selection of local NZ wines, beers and a variety of spirits. The Christmas decorations are up and Bill is now taking bookings for end of year functions or parties, but don’t forget that in addition to sit down dining, Eastern Cuisine offers two different takeaway options. One is a handy self-service smorgasbord for lunches and dinners, a handy option where you can simply choose the dishes you want from the available options at the buffet. The other option is the more than 90 different meal options on the restaurant menu also available to takeaway, so you can still order your old favourites and specialty dishes, but enjoy the convenience of having your meal to-go. Whether you want to dine in with friends or family, or you want the traditionally prepared Chinese takeaway, call in to Eastern Cuisine, open six days Tuesday to Sunday at 275 Queen St. Phone 03 544 3132 to talk to Bill about catering to your crowd. Boating Nelson is known as the sunshine capital of New Zealand, and what better way to enjoy our fantastic summer weather than relaxing out on the water, taking part in the great range of water sports, fishing, diving, and recreation that is on offer? Before you even think about hooking the boat up to the trailer though, don’t forget that planning and preparation is needed before you take to the water and a bit of forward thinking could save your life – or at least save the cost of a tow back to shore should something go amiss. Here are a few simple things you should do. Firstly, check the weather and sea conditions before deciding whether to go out. Know the tides and find out what the outlook is for the day. Whether you are buying a boat, taking yours out again with the arrival of summer, or you’ve been using it often, regular maintenance and equipment checks are the only way to ensure troublefree boating. If you do not, it will catch up with you, maybe not tomorrow, maybe not next month, but it will almost certainly happen. So whether you’re heading over to the bay for the holidays or you are heading out on the water locally, it pays to make sure your boat is up to scratch before setting sail. If you want to have fun out on the water this summer for business, leisure or pleasure make sure you check out the great range of marine servicers, suppliers and providers that our region has to offer. Looking forward to a summer spent out on the water? Talk to Bays Boating Motueka Ltd, the expert team who offer sales and service of both new and used boats, outboard motors and marine electronics. You can also pick up a variety of convenient accessories from their showroom, including fish cooler bins, boarding platforms, polyprop rope and more. A&P Show celebrates 120 years in style It is unknown how many people walked through the Nelson A&P Show gates on the weekend, but coordinator Annette Robinson says the feedback “had been excellent” after a perfect weekend weather-wise. The Nelson A&P Show celebrated its 120th anniversary and while the goals had certainly changed since its inception when it was based entirely on agriculture, Annette believed the animals always brought back the crowds. “They had huge numbers registered and I feel we’re on a slight turn so maybe next year we can get some of the early years aspect back into the show,” she says. The Nelson A&P Show often comes under fire for its entry fee, and while a lowered family rate for this year seemed to go down well for some event-goers, the feedback from an entertainment point of view was mixed. Richmond’s Dean Hunter took his kids to the show and says the $25 fee was “a pleasant surprise”, but did admit it was a “little bit steep”

having to pay at the gate and then come in and spend more money. “We come most years. Today I’d say there is less to do. It seems a lot quieter today whether it was busier yesterday I don’t know. It definitely seems more thinned out,” he says. Grant Blakeborough of Nelson, says he always brings the kids for a fun day out and they were “pretty happy with it all”. “We’ve only just got here so we haven’t had a good look around but so far I’m pretty happy with it all. It’s more for the kids and they love it so it becomes a bit of a traditional every year.” Peter Mott of Wakefield brought his grandkids along and thought the event was better than last year. “There seems to be more here,” he says. Families had to previously pay $30 to attend the show, but this year a pre-buy ticket could be purchased for $20, and Annette says it showed with more families attending on Saturday. “The weekend pass is $25 and that’s a huge reduction for families. We want to make it affordable.”

RATS RATS RATS! When the first immigrants arrived in Nelson, many found they had to share their bedrooms with rats that were so plentiful that even poison had little effect. The native

rats, or “kiore”, had no fear of man. Alfred Saunders, an early settler on the Fifeshire, described this plight: ‘At night we had to keep a stick in hand to thrash them away from the candle.’

Generations of Nelson presents Snippets of History $15 per booklet, volume one and two available. $25 for the double-disc CD. Available at Marsden House or The Radio Network.

Children rip off elderly parents: I was sick to the stomach when I read how children are ripping off their elderly parents, they seem to forget the sacrifices many of us make to ensure our children have food in their stomachs, a warm bed etc. We do our best for our children and to have this happen is disgusting. I hope more elderly folk lodge complaints about the abuse they are having to endure. Brenda Kenny.

Tourist says thanks This is a letter written by a Danish tourist who was in Nelson last year. If you know the two ladies in this letter, or indeed it is you, please get in touch with this newspaper on 548 4949 or you can email us on editorial@ nelsonweekly.co.nz. This is considered a thank you to two lovely women I met in the McDonalds in Nelson on December 6 2012. Since I never got your names I hope that the following recap on the afternoon, will make you aware of your presence there. This was the day I got a phone call about my two friends being involved in the car crash at the Pelorus Bridge the day before. I had just finished lunch when two women came to my table and asked if they could join me. It was a grandmother and her grown up granddaughter. The grandmother was dressed in a nice pink suit she sat down while her granddaughter got them some burgers and hot chocolate with marshmallows. I remember us talking about the horrible rainy weather and how you told me about a similar weather the year before which had been even worse. Then my phone rang. It was the manager from the hostel in Wellington where I had lived for four months while studying. He

Tourist Lea Thode. knew I was waiting for my two friends for us to go travelling together on the South Island. He told me that they had been in a car accident the day before and had both been killed. At first I didn’t believe him. I turned around on the bench and burst into tears. We talked a bit more and I hung up. The two women looked at me with worried eyes and the granddaughter asked me if I was all right. Crying, I told them that my two friends, who I was waiting for in Nelson, had been killed the day before. The old woman had trouble hearing what I was saying and her granddaughter explained the situation to her. It felt like the noise in the restaurant still made it hard

• “Christmas is coming, the geese are getting fat, who’ll put a penny in the old man’s hat?” Who indeed. But more importantly, who will put some veges in the garden, so that a bountiful Christmas can be enjoyed by all at the table. • It cannot be denied that home grown produce has a special flavour, and you know exactly how the plants have been grown. • So, if it is to be a cold Christmas meal, due to a hot summer day, we will need a lettuce or two. There are many varieties available from those that form beautiful hearts, to the much easier to grow picking lettuces, that come in a variety of attractive colours. These are what I choose to grow because they are so easy. • A salad just has to have some tomatoes in it. Have you got yours in the garden yet? If not, you may be a bit late for the Christmas hamper, but they are a MUST for summer meals. Again, there is a confusing selection to choose from, both on colour and size. Best that you make a selection for the sake of variety. Did you know that tomatoes should be planted deeply, to enable roots to form on the lower stems? The fruits don’t form on the bottom of the stems, and you will have a much stronger plant as well. • I know your potatoes are in and growing, aren’t they? So we need to

say no more on that subject! • And what about beetroot? Again in several colour ways but I like the good old dark red for colour. Also the elongated variety is much easier to slice, after you have enjoyed sliding the skin off the beet. [I love doing that!] • So we have the basics for a salad, but what about all the other summer veges that should be sown and grown now? Things like beans, zucchinis, carrots, peppers, cucumbers, both long and round, courgettes, and while you are about it, plant a pumpkin or two along with squash [said to be sweeter than pumpkin] and best that you plant sweet corn instead of sowing seed to catch up on a bit of time. You should keep up a continuation of sowing and planting to ensure a continuing supply of vegetables. • “If you haven’t got a penny, a ha’penny will do If you haven’t got a ha’penny’ then God bless you’. In other words, if you don’t make an effort now, you will miss out! • I was going to talk to you about some plants with quite unusual flowers like kalmias, brunfelsia the [yesterday today and tomorrow] shrub, a crazy campanula called Octopus, and a hydrangea that has flowers that resembles a lilac. But all is not lost, there will be another time for that. In the meantime, keep the vege garden producing well!

for her to comprehend what was actually going on, but while I was talking to her granddaughter, I could see in her eyes that she was nearly crying. Just off the look on my face she was deeply touched, which was a very beautiful way of showing me her sympathy. Her granddaughter took her time trying to calm me down and help me figure out what to do next. She was worried for me and I felt very well taken care of. After a few minutes of talking I got up determined to get a flight back to Wellington and the hostel we lived in. Just before I left the table, the old woman took my hand, looked me deeply in the eyes and gave me 50 dollars. The reason why this situation is so important to me is because of the deep felt care you both showed me that day. Each of you did what you could in trying to comfort me. Your kindness was overwhelming to me and I want to let you how very grateful I am that you came to my table that afternoon. I hope you are both well and still enjoying cocoa with marshmallows now and then. Next time I visit New Zealand I’ll definitely buy you one.

FooTbAll: The NZKS Nelson Marlborough Falcons is hosting a pre-season tournament at Lansdowne Park, Blenheim this weekend. Coming to play against the Falcons are Canterbury United Youth and a team from Wellington’s Olé Football Academy. Coach Davor Tavich says the pre-season tournament is an important part of the 2014 season’s preparations. SEvENS: The Tasman Makos 7s team has booked a place at the Bayleys National Sevens Tournament in Rotorua at the start of next year. The men’s team won three games and lost two games to rank third place at the Southern Sevens in Timaru on the weekend. Tasman’s wins came against Canterbury, South Canterbury and Mid Canterbury. The women’s team did not have the same success though, finishing fourth place, one spot out of nationals contention. Athletes hit form ahead of nationals With the New Zealand Secondary School Track and Field Championship just over a week away, Nelson athletes used the annual Tasman Club Championship as one last opportunity to hit form. The four hour Tasman Club Champs was held at the Saxton Oval athletics track and featured most of the regular weekly Twilight Series competitors, with just a few coming over from Blenheim. But the emphasis was on quality, and the young athletes would have been motivated by shotputter Dale Pritchard’s early efforts. Dale’s throw of 16.22m was a new Tasman and club record and continues on his career best season. And while the evening’s top performance came from a senior athlete, Athletics Nelson head coach Greg Lautenslager was happy with the overall efforts of the 25-odd competitors that will be heading away to Hamilton for the December 7-8 event. The athlete with the best chance to win

editorial@waimeaweekly.co.nz a medal in Hamilton is Tapawera Area School’s Chris Brake. The 18 year old jumper came away with a gold, silver and bronze from last year’s nationals, and he was aiming for at least one more gold in his last ever school competition. “I’m really happy with where I am this year,” Chris says, shortly after successfully jumping 1.90m in the high jump on Saturday and going out to 6.56m in the long jump. “Last year at nationals I had a gold in the high jump but I’m a lot more confident in my triple jump this year.” Greg singled out Waimea College jumper Katie Thompson, who seems to have the edge in the 100m sprint this year too, as one athlete that should do well at nationals. “She had an awesome performance. Her 12.72 seconds in the 100m would have been a PB but

it was 0.1 over the legal wind limit. It was the only win aided race for the entire meet too,” says Greg. “She had five of six jumps over five metres in the long jump too which was awesome for her. Claire Doris is coaching her and doing an amazing job, I think we’ll see her around for quite some time.” Saturday night’s 1500m produced a string of personal bests, with Nelson College’s Mike Lowe taking the honours in a time of 4 minutes 1.96 seconds, ahead of school-mate Josh Barry (4 min 7.7 sec). Jess Martin, who ran from the front for the entire race, was too good in the women’s race winning in 4 minutes 43.13 seconds. “She’s ready to go for nationals and will be right there in the hunt. That was a near PB and she ran most of it by herself. That was a personal best for Mike Lowe and he’s ready to go. I think we showed we’re capable of running with the best in New Zealand and some others have certainly elevated themselves into medal contention for nationals.”

WTTU well ahead in top of table clash Phillip Rollo Reporter

editorial@waimeaweekly.co.nz They're just halfway through the top of the table clash with Athletic College Old Boys but Waimea Toi Toi United appear to be well on track to claim the victory, and all but seal a spot in the two-day final. Backed by a five wicket haul to captain Cade Armstrong, it took just 46.2 overs for Bar 321 WTTU to clean through the RWCA ACOB batting order. Opener Greg Chitty, who was dropped on one run in the second over, was their eventual top scorer with 38 runs off 57 balls. He hit eight fours before caught by Tom Ingham off a Jon Routhan delivery. Even though ACOB were looking reasonably strong at the time of his removal, things began to crumble for the home side at the Botanics once Ben Gully (26 off 62 balls) and Simon McGowan (18 off 51) were dismissed. In fact, just five batsmen reached double figures as their scorecard read 122 all out at the end of their innings. Cade only gave away 16 runs in an impressive 10.2 over spell which saw the Henley School teacher give the ACOB tail a lesson in bowling, earning his first five wicket bag of the season.

ACOB's Simon McGowan blocks a ball as the Waimea Toi Toi United slip cordon watches on at the Botanics on Saturday. Photo: Evan Barnes/Shuttersport. In contrast to ACOB's solid start, it wasn't until contracted Central Districts batsman Greg Hay took to the crease that WTTU asserted any dominance with the willow. With Tom Ingham reaching 19 and Stephen Binnie going lowly for four runs, Greg rose to the occasion hitting an un-

beaten 113 runs off 128 balls to steer his side to 236/4 at the end of the second innings. His 113 runs was just nine short of what the entire ACOB line up could manage themselves. Other key performances came fromHome Mason Thelin who continued Open his strong season scoring 42 runs, while

Hamish Drummond was on 33 not out at the conclusion of the first day. Going into last weekend WTTU, who have a two win/one draw record, were sitting on 52 points with ACOB second highest on 37 points, just four ahead of third placed Wanderers.

Special Olympians ready to represent Nelson Phillip Rollo Forty athletes will represent Special Olympics Nelson at the National Summer Games in Dunedin this week and they’re all “excited” at the prospect of beating personal bests and winning medals. More than 1200 athletes from around the country with intellectual disabilities have embarked on fundraising and training programmes ahead of the tournament. The Nelson team had to raise $56,000 to send the competitors, caregivers and coaches plus another $8000 for uniforms. While the Canterbury Community Trust

contributed $15,000, the rest was raised through art auctions and sausage sizzles. “The people in Nelson really look after Special Olympics and they seem to like us, they’re very generous and we’re very lucky,” says Special Olympics Nelson coordinator Lois Aitkenhead. “It’s a bigger team that last year when we took 32 so we’re going up.” Nelson will have athletes across seven sports, including basketball, boccia, swimming, powerlifting, track and field and golf. “Swimming is the biggest one, along with basketball. They’re the biggest in New Zealand and it’s the same for us too.” The most experienced competi-

tor is Ian Tomlinson who has competed in track and field at every nationals since 1984. There will be medals for a top three finish and ribbons are given out to all of the top eight. Competitors are put into division depending on their ability, giving them fair competition. The tournament will also give athletes a chance to qualify for the World Games in Los Angeles in 2015. “We’re aiming for personal bests for everybody and that’s all you can ask for. Yes we’ll get medals because some are in a class of their own, but as long as they exceed their best then we’ll be happy.”

Hot work for mountain bikers Kurt Lancaster fought off the heat and the dust to win the Mammoth Enduro in Nelson over the weekend. Kurt finished almost 30 seconds faster than Ed Kerly to win the men's section with Meg Bichard winning the women's catogery. In the mixed, or couples, category, Meg and Ed cleaned up. Thirty seven riders took part in the enduro and there was no question about the biggest factor facing riders. “It was a hot day

of racing, damned hot. Hot and dusty, hot and fast and just generally hot. The hotness factor was a big one, with the hot scale blowing out, leaving all entrants feeling decidedly hot. Hot and sweaty on the climbs, and hot and lung munching on the timed stages. Hot,” says Chris Mildon. The next event hosted by the Nelson Mountainbike Club is the Sprung Super D series on December 4.

League duo off to play in Australia Phillip Rollo

The Richmond Rabbits are only two years old but the two-time TRL champions have already built a pathway to bigger and better things. Two players in their first year with the club have scored gigs in Australia, with 24 year old halfback-hooker Maloni Lama landing a two year deal in Cairns with club side Tully Tigers and 18 year old centre Tamaira Raurimu-Carew being invited to trial for the South Sydney Rabbitohs youth team. Maloni left this week having been offered a job alongside his commitments to the Tigers club. Tully compete in the Cairns District Rugby League A Grade competition and he will be paid for each game he plays. “Because it’s my first year I want to improve and learn more about the game, and hopefully I can go further than A Grade. I’m looking to get a future out of it,” Maloni says. “When I was asked I said yes straight away. I told them I’d give it everything.” Tamaira has been rewarded following his decision to switch

codes. Last year he played second five for the Nelson College first XV rugby team but decided to play rugby league with his father instead. He was the youngest member of the Tasman Titans team and got the opportunity to trial with the Rabbitohs following discussions Titans coach Phil Bergman had with an Australian agent. “It will be pretty hard out but I’m really hoping I’ll get in,” Tamaira says. “It would be a dream come true. I wasn’t expecting to go anywhere this year I just wanted to get a feel for it. I hadn’t even played league before.” Tamaira had initially planned to attend an open Warriors youth team trial, but declined, favouring the invite-only Rabbitohs trial. He will leave on December 14. While Rabbits trainer Ryan Charles says it was bittersweet as his side would lose one, if not two, of its best players, he labelled the
