Camp celebrates 50 years Quinney’s Bush Camp in Motupiko is celebrating its 50th birthday this month – but it might never have opened if the founder hadn’t received a “sign from God”, says Mark Quinney.

In 1961 the late Ray Quinney proposed starting a campsite on an area of family farm as a means to raise funds for a new vicarage at Tapawera. Ray decided to put an advertisement in the local paper to announce the opening and it was all set to go.

However, later that day when walking around the overgrown and dry area Ray had a change of heart and called the paper to cancel the advert because he thought the risk of fire too great.

Fate intervened and the advertisement ran in the next edition, and

thanks to that error generations of Kiwi families have enjoyed summering there ever since. “Dad (Ray) had already started thinking about plan B, but meanwhile the advert went in the paper anyway. We are Christians so we see that as Gods way of saying ‘no, you’re not backing out of it, you’re going to have a campground here’,” says Mark.

Mark says Quinney’s Bush Camp aims is to provide an experience here that will help draw families together, and if customer retention is anything to go by it seems they have achieved that goal. “Grandchildren are coming here now when it was the Grandparents who used to come with their parents as children.

It’s been round for a while now, and people seem to really like it,” he says.

The Peasants’ drummer Chris Phillips is predicting big things for Trafalgar Square Countdown.

The National Smokefreerockquest winners will be headlining Nelson’s hottest New Year’s Eve concert, and they’re chomping at the bit to perform in front of thousands of people in their hometown.

Following a whirlwind 2011, The Peasants have become one of New Zealand’s top young indie-pop acts, and will soon be heard all over the country’s radio stations.

Their debut single Let It Go is due for a February release, but its some of their latest songs that will be heard for the first time down Trafalgar St. “We’ve been writing a whole lot of new stuff, so one thing that people can expect is new songs,” says Chris. “We’re hoping to surprise people with a performance they’ve never seen before.”

The New Year’s Eve concert is expected to pull around 3000 people and Chris says it is “awesome” to be able to play in front of crowds that size when they have just finished, or are still, attending secondary school. “We love it eh, we entered rockquest... and now we’re jumping straight into it.”

The Trafalgar Square Countdown begins at 8:30pm on December 31. It is alcohol free.

The band features Garin College students Georgia Nott, Chris and Abbey Phillips, Joseph Corban-Banks, Clark Hinton, Holly Tippler and Rupert Wockner.

Outdoor movies back for summer

Experience the nostalgia of some significant but almost forgotten movies on the flickering screen in the great outdoors at the SolarCity Summer Movies.

SolarCity Summer Movies coordinator Antony Hodgson says the enduring and simple appeal of SolarCity Summer Movies has been vital to the success, now part of Summer in Nelson for 16 years.

“I think the simplicity is a big part of the appeal - it’s a low key event, where people can just spread out their blankets and relax as night falls and the movie begins,” he says.

Summer Movies this year will be screened on a new brighter projector. “It means a brighter image that will allow us to start the

But Tahunanui Beach isn’t the only beach within

Nelson’s reach. Rabbit Island is only a short drive outside of Richmond and offers a similar experience with plenty more space to barbecue. Rabbit Island is often the first port of call for picnickers, and with its own cycle track and equestrian facilities, there’s plenty to see and do.

Kaiteriteri Beach is the beginning of the golden sand. The small township of Kaiteriteri wouldn’t be anywhere without its luxurious beach that brings in thousands of Christchurch residents, and visitors from other regions, every year.

Kaiteriteri is the gateway to the Abel Tasman and is one of the most popular destinations for summer in the country.

All three beaches topped a Tasman District Council report for the most popular swimming areas in the Nelson/Tasman region, along with the Lee Valley River and Roding River.

A year packed with news, for good and ill To do this year-in-review piece I spend the better part of an hour scouring through this year’s issues of Nelson Weekly. When I finished, one thing was clear, it was action packed.

In February we mourned for our neighbours in Canterbury in one of the most difficult moments in the history of our country. The earthquake was hard for many in our region as we have such a close tie with Christchurch.

Yet in September and October we partied with the biggest event to ever hit our shores, as our heroes won the Rugby

World Cup and we hosted three games at Trafalgar Park impeccably.

Then, earlier this month we watched as mud came pouring off the hills and ruined the homes of more than 100 families in Nelson and Tasman, bringing a natural disaster to our own doorstep, for many very literally.

But Nelson has once again proved to be a great city.

Our community spirit through the year has been outstanding, from rallying to help Christchurch, to putting out the welcome

mat for RWC visitors. Just last week police issued a statement praising the “community spirit and will” of the community.

2011 has been a tough year, but a good year.

As a newspaper we’ve had plenty to celebrate as well.

We are now 16 months old and going strong, we won the Nelson Tasman Chamber of Commerce award for emerging business of the year and we’ve been able to hire more local staff to help grow the paper.

Some of us will endure a tough summer, with uncertainly still around scores of Nelson homes, but on the whole I hope most are able to relax this summer and enjoy a break before ripping back into 2012!

If you see local lawyer Frank Freeman driving around in a brand new Mercedes-Benz C-Class Coupe, it’s not because he’s charging you too much.

Frank was the winner of a Fashion Island competition to “shop like a star”. Frank bought a shirt at Rodd and Gunn, entered the competition and won the use of a Mercedes for ten days.

Fashion Island manager Susan Matz says she was rapt to see the prize go to a local.

“Frank was really excited and it’s great that the winner was so happy. We had a great response to the competition and had thousands of entries.”

Frank also won free petrol with his prize although it did come with certain restrictions. “Basically I not allowed past Murchison, that’s ok I was planning on sticking in Nelson anyway,” he says.

Johnnie Cameron is grateful for his spot on the Woollaston Nelson Jazz and Blues Festival line-up; he just hopes the region’s residents can come out en mass to see the country’s leading jazz musicians at work.

The Kaiteriteri resident is a former Garin College and Nelson College student and has landed three performances during the festival with his band, the Johnnie Cameron Trio.

Johnnie is a former Nelson Smokefreerockquest winner and will be joined by former NMIT bass tutor Sam Atkins and one of the region’s most promising drummers, Sam Edmonds, of pop punk band Recommended By Your Mom. “It’s quite cool because Sam is probably the best bass player the region has to offer and he’s a great vocalist as well, so the biggest thing I’ve liked about it so far is that everyone

is so vital about the music and it comes across in the performance,” says Johnnie.

The 2012 Woollaston Jazz and Blues Festival will celebrate its 21st birthday with a six day musical party. There will be music in parks, in bars, on Nelson’s city streets and events right across the Tasman region to Golden Bay. The festival will feature more than 200 musicians, 50 events and an audience of over 30,000.

Surf life savers ready for action

Tahunanui beach is one of the most dangerous beaches in New Zealand says Ed Steenbergen, club captain of the Nelson Surf Life Saving Club.

“It’s because of its accessibility. A family could come down to the playing fields or playground and it’s very easy for a child to go wandering away towards the water hazard,” says Ed. Compared to a notorious stretch of water like Piha, with its big waves and rips, you might think Nelsons beaches are placid. “Piha, sure you’ve got a lot of dangerous features but you have to make the conscious effort to drive there to go swimming, here the danger is accessibility”, says Ed. Nelson’s Life Saving Club is out patrolling the beach every Sunday in summer, but they would certainly like to increase the time when the can ‘hoist the flags’, as it were. Ed says with more funding and more members, the club could increase the time they spend on the sand.

The message for beach goers this summer, as always, is “swim between the flags”, but when the life savers aren’t on the beach, Ed says the local community and swimmers need to look after each other. “Luckily we’ve got a good contingent of people on the Tahuna hills that keep an eye on the water. Camping in Nelson bonds families over the decades It may sound like a bit of a contradiction but over the next few days many families who live in Westport, Christchurch, Oamaru and Dunedin will be coming home for Christmas, in Nelson.

At capacity, Tahuna Beach Holiday Park will hold 3000 people enjoying a traditional Kiwi summer holiday.

“We’ve got some families who have been coming here for four generations. They go to the same site every year, park next to the same people and a lot of them say it’s like coming home,” says Ann Cumpstone, park manager.

Arthur and Glenys Tyler (“the original team”) have been coming from Westport to spend Christmas in Nelson for 45 years and Arthur, now here with his grandchildren, swears it’s only ever rained once during Christmas dinner.

Richmond Park Race Course will come alive next month with the Interislander Summer Festival Nelson Harness Races, a two day event for the whole family. Large crowds are again expected to attend the races, hosted by the Nelson Harness Racing Club, which has been putting on events like this since the turn of the last century.

Some of the best drivers from the South Island will be in attendance, including Dexter Dunn, Mark Jones and David Butt. Johnnie McKenzie has taken on the Nelson Harness Racing Club presidency, and is happy with the amount of support shown to the Club from other trainers and drivers, especially from the Canterbury region.

If previous results are anything to go by, local trainers can expected to be provide several of the winners, predicts Bill Monk, a long time committee member.

Arts fair back for New Year's Day Tahunanui playing fields will be transformed for the annual Arts and Crafts Fair on New Year’s Day. The Lions Club has been organising this event for about thirty years, and it is always a big success.

It is a win – win – win affair as holidaymakers get to enjoy local ware, the artists and craftspeople get a chance to present and sell their works and the local Lions club makes a few thousand dollars.

All of this money goes to charity.

Over recent years we have been able to assist the Nelson Rescue Helicopter, Riding for Disabled, the SightFirst Campaign and the new Ronald MacDonald House.

result of the Arts and Crafts Fair and the Nelson North Lions Club hopes this year to add shade areas near the barbeque to make the area even more pleasant.

Some Nelsonians do not realise how the Lions have, over the years, helped the Council make that whole stretch in Tahuna a really delightful area.

It starts with the playground which is for young people, then the area which is really for teens and youth which including the barbeques and the music platform area and finally the change rooms and café.

This year the Lions expect about 110 stalls for the fair which runs from lunchtime onwards and is a great family day out.

Lee Valley a popular spot for families

Rivers are set to make waves this summer as a hot place to cool off.

Locals and tourists can discover the beauty tucked away between the mountains of the local ranges at popular swimming holes such as Lee River and Aniseed River.

Less than a half hour drive from the center of Nelson, you can pack a picnic lunch and get away for the day with family or friends. Simply turn down River Terrace Rd, off the State Highway in Brightwater, and then onto Lee Valley Rd. Holidaymakers will be spoiled for choice when finding the perfect spot for a picnic and swim, with a bridge down the road allowing vehicles to cross onto Mead Rd, giving access to the other side of the river.

The Meads Reserve offers picnic tables and toilet facilities; it’s a great place to bring along a barbecue and cook up some steak and sausages on a sunny day.

Found just across the bridge, it’s a hilly area providing plenty of places to park your car and enjoy a more secluded lunch and swim.

Luminate Festival Cycle trail tastes great reviews back for 2012

The “earth-friendly” Luminate Festival is back for 2012, bringing its mix of music, dance, art and culture with a focus on environmental sustainability, intentional community, knowledge sharing, creativity and inspiration to Golden Bay. This year the line-up includes The Barons of Tang, Wild Marmalade, Oka, Ganga Giri, (all from Australia), Newtown Rocksteady, Pacific Curls, Taos, the Nomad, Nigel Gavin & Richard Adhams, Amiria Grenell, Samba del Sol, and many more live bands.

Electronic producers include OTT (Twisted), Emok (Iboga), James Munro (Flying Rhino), Phony Orphants (Iboga), Loud (Nano), Hedflux (UK), Merkaba (Aus), Grouch, Tom Cosm and Isaac Chambers.

Jamie Janover (USA) also returns to host several presentations on quantum science.

With a solid reputation for delivering a stunning line up of international and New Zealand artists, offering a broad diversity of live and electronic genres, it’s safe to say that music and dance is an important feature of the atmosphere at Luminate.

However the vision for Luminate runs even deeper and manifests as an incredible array of activities on offer throughout the week, providing an authentic and diverse festival experience for all ages, say organisers.

A Tasman bed and breakfast owner says international interest in the Great Taste Cycle Trail on Rabbit Island encouraged her to check it out over the weekend.

Pauline Skelton and her husband John cycled the beginning of the track so they could give a better review when fielding calls from Australia.

“I’m doing the biking trail so I know what I’m talking about to my guests,” says Pauline. “We’ve got a couple of websites that are always contacting us and giving us updates and it’s very much out there. I think it’s going to be good for tourism.”

Pauline says some sunny weather on Sunday motivated her to get the bike out of the garage. “It’s always in the news so I thought we better check it out. We haven’t got time to do the boat but it’s a fantastic idea.”

The unique link between Rabbit Island and Mapua was opened in October, but has since been a very popular destination for tourists as well as locals.

When complete, the whole trail including a section in the Motueka River Valley - will cover a distance of 162-175km and will run from Nelson Airport, to Richmond, out to Tapawera, along the Motueka River Valley to Riwaka, and then back to Richmond through Motueka and Mapua.

More questions from last week that I did not have room for. Q: How do we get rid of Ivy and Wandering Jew invading our property from next door?

A: This stuff is a menace. The Convolvulous cure mentioned the other week could work on the Wandering Jew but I would use Amitrole instead of Roundup.

Please be careful when using and do not let it touch other loved plants. Another idea to try for the Ivy ,with the same warning, is Vigilant Gel. Trace the Ivy to a fairly thick stem (I know – there will be many!). Cut the base of the stem and use the gel as per the instructions. You will have to do this several times along the plant and if you are on good terms with the neighbour it may pay to go and find the source on their side also. This will carry the poison back to the roots and in time it should kill the plant. It will also kill any other plant it touches so use with caution!

Q: How do I control Passionvine Hoppers, they are on everything!!!

A: These are the scourge of Nelson gardens. They are also very hard to get rid of. The juvenile “fluffy bums” and the adult lacewigs both have one thing in common apart from eating your plants – they can jump! Rudd says they came from Australia but I can’t be sure!! Spraying really does not do much – they seem to just jump out of the way.

If you can collect the egg masses from under the leaves in late Autumn and winter and burn them then you have a good chance of stopping the cycle. You could try also try a flyspray – that has been known to work as it is a finer mist. I would recommend that you use Neem Oil spray which should make them sick for a week or two and also put Neem pellets around the base of your plants, the smell can act as a deterrent also.

Skate tour rolls into town

The Tasman Skatepark Tour is back and better than ever. The tour showcases the best boarders and bikers the region has to offer. It is now open to scooter riders as well, which has become increasingly popular within the past 12 months.

It’s free to enter and there are plenty of hot prizes up for grabs thanks to Cheapskates, Village Cycles and The Edge. The first stop on the tour

is Mapua on January 4. It will be followed by Takaka on January 7, Tapawera on January 11, Motueka on January 14, Brighwater on January 18, before concluding at the Richmond Skatepark on January 21.

Master Pilot will be performing live at many of the skate comps.

Pavilion sources cups and saucers More than 2000 people will hit Saxton Oval when the South Island Colgate Games reaches town in the middle of January next year, but the organisers are in need of cups and plates to help feed them.

With 120 officials coming from all over the country, the pavilion has discovered a bare cupboard for kitchenware and are seeking donations of old cups and plates that can be used for the games and to be kept in the pavilion for future events.

“Anybody that has got spare ones that want to get rid of them, we’ll gladly take them and we’ll keep them in the pavilion,” says Nelson-based president of New Zealand Children’s Athletics Association, Jan Cockeram.

“It’ll help out cricket as well; they’ll just be in the

kitchen. You know when people say ‘oh what do we have these old cups for?’ Well that’s what we are after.”

Jan says she doesn’t mind if they have chips in them, as long as they are a plate, she will take them. “They are 60c a day to hire them. I couldn’t believe it.”

The Saxton Oval pavilion is jointly funded by both councils and was opened last month.

The Colgate Games features athletes between ages 7 and 14.

Nelson officials, which have often doubled as parents of the athletes, will use the competition as a chance to learn more skills and knowledge.

Tasman’s premier cycling tour, featuring the top riders from around New Zealand, is set to return this summer with four stages of action around the Waimea region.

The Tour de Vineyards is one of New Zealand’s premier cycling events and is held over five days through the scenic beauty and magical setting of the Tasman District.

The tour starts on Tuesday December 27 with the final stage going around Richmond on Saturday December 31.

Marty is a former Waimea Intermediate School and Waimea College pupil, but finished his final years of secondary school in Christchurch.

He moved there for the opportunities, gaining selection in various Canterbury age-grade representative sides, before making his debut for the Canterbury Wizards.

But it's now new opportunities that have lead Nelson's top cricketer back to the region for good, as well as escaping the earthquakes.

"I guess it's the opportunities. My parents are here, and also after the earthquake I thought Nelson would be a nice place to move back to."
