No room for extra students Pupils at Nelson College will be forced to take classes in the school’s boarding houses this term as the student population outgrows the number of desks and chairs available. The region’s oldest college will welcome 1210 students when it re-opens next week, up on the 1080 at the same time last year, and headmaster Gary O’Shea says that’s putting pressure on the school’s resources. Several classes will be held in the school’s boarding houses until four new classrooms are built, which is expected to be around May this year. Gary says a fifth “pre-fab” classroom was borrowed from Nayland College and will now remain at Nelson College permanently. He says the growth has come from the Tasman district, with some families opting to send their boy to a single-sex school. “But if you look at the trends in

Nelson and Atawhai, those areas will keep growing and in the next few years our growth will be from Nelson.” He says the school has enrolled 40 year-8 boys from Broadgreen Intermediate. The school is expecting another 8-15 students in the next few weeks, but he wouldn’t like to see it get much bigger. “If we got too much bigger we’d start to lose that sense of community.” Meanwhile, Nayland College’s new principal, Daniel Wilson, will preside over a smaller school than his predecessor Rex Smith. The school has suffered another drop in its roll, with 1021 students enrolling for 2015, down

Nelson College bursting at seams FROM PAGE 1 on the 1081 at the start of last year and 1120 in 2013. At Waimea College, the roll has remained steady with almost the same number of students enrolling this year as last, 1541. But acting principal, Graeme Smith, says that
will change in the next year or two with Waimea Intermediate taking a record number of enrolments this year, up to 670 and still turning away 30 outof-town students. Garin College has recorded an increase with 510 students enrolling this year, up from 488 last year.
Nelson College for Girls principal Cathy Ewing says 1120 students are enrolled for 2015, slightly up on last year, and she says that number is likely to increase before next week. Most of the colleges are back next Tuesday, but some, including Waimea, start this Friday.

Rodeo is a hit with Nelson crowd

The cowboys and cowgirls rode into town to compete in the action-packed annual Richmond Rodeo on Saturday. The sunshine was out in full force and so was the crowd at the Richmond A&P Showgrounds. Rodeo Secretary, Tina Angus-Phyn, says there were a record number of entries this year and the standard of stock was very high. “In terms of standard for competition, we have had the best we have ever had in Nelson this year, with North Islanders coming down chasing national titles”, says Tina. For one Wai-iti family, rodeo is in the blood, with three generations being involved in the event on Saturday. The late Leo Nisbett had been involved in rodeo since 1973 and was president of the rodeo club until his passing. His wife Sharon is now treuser for the club and son Ben is a pick-up rider. Ben’s six-yearold son, Dustin, also competed on the day, in the calf ride. Ben remembers always being around rodeo and grew up travelling with his dad to competitions, and has continued that tradition with this own

The 19 year old woman was taken to hospital with minor injuries and police are awaiting the results of a blood alcohol test. It is unclear if her injuries resulted from the crash as witnesses also reported she was involved in a scuffle with a group of people immediately after the crash at the reserve.
Summer of cricket heads to the beach Jacob Chandler Visitors to Tahunanui Beach may have been surprised on Saturday to find the sand lined with cricket pitches. The Hyundai Family Time Project saw 20 families of six from across the region competing in the beach cricket event. The Skinniports, dressed in fluorescent yellow, took home the first place
prize and will receive their share of a $25,000 prize pool, including two tickets each to an ICC World Cup cricket match in Nelson and $3000 worth of vouchers. The team, made up of Grant, Mitchell and Josh Newport along with Andrew and Sam Kininmonth, spent their spare time during the day on the practise field refining their bowling and batting skills. The event was attended by cricket legend Chris Harris who offered encouragement and advice to the teams.

Nelsonians encouraged to get behind 'Neighbours Day' Nelson neighbours are being encouraged to get together over BBQs, picnics and other gatherings to celebrate Neighbours Day Aotearoa at the end of March. Neighbourhood Support Nelson is offering meat and bakery vouchers as an incentive for neighbours to organise gatherings for the weekend celebration on March 28 and 29. Neighbourhood Support Nelson co-ordinator, Karen Clark, says Neighbours Day Aotearoa is an annual event promoting neighbourliness and offers an ideal opportunity to get to know neighbours better. "The aim is to encourage us all to take that extra step to get to know our neighbours. For some it may mean simply saying hello to a neighbour they don’t know, while for others it may mean inviting neighbours over for a cuppa and a chat. "Every connection we make helps make our neighbourhoods friendlier and nicer places to live in.’’ Neighbourhood Support Nel-
son has taken part in the national event for the past three years and this year is offering 35 meat pack vouchers from Pestell’s butchery and 30 bakery vouchers from Stoke Bakery and Kitchen for neighbourhood gatherings held during the weekend. Any kind of gathering qualifies, as long as at least five households take part. Previous Neighbours Day events have included morning teas, potluck dinners, working bees and garage sales. People can enter the voucher draws by filling out an application form, available on www.facebook.com/ neighbourhoodsupportnelson or www.itson.co.nz (search Neighbours Day Aotearoa). Entries close on February 27. The vouchers are being funded through grants from the Nelson City Council and the Network Tasman Trust. Upgrades to coastguard boat will help save lives Jacob Chandler
New satellite navigation equipment and two new motors will help Nelson coastguards reach emergencies at sea quicker and more accurately. Funding was secured through Pub Charity and the Lion Foundation for the two new motors. This replaced ageing motors that had completed 1611 hours of use. Coastguard president Graeme Richards says, due to their age, the old motors were becoming unreliable. "The last time we had them on during practise training we went to start them and they wouldn't start. Water had gotten into the starter motor." He says the hydraulics were also beginning to fail and the starboard motor was leaking. “We’d be out ready to do a rescue and the engine alarms were going off. We would have to stop everything and try and figure out why. When there is somebody in the water and time is of the essence, then you can’t afford that sort of thing." A new navigational system was also installed by Haven Marine through the Coastguard’s own
Nelson Coastguard training leader Pearl Holmes, left, and Coastguard president Graeme Richards, with the new navigation equipment on the Coastguard boat. Photo: Jacob Chandler. fundraising. Graeme says the new electronic systems will allow the team to work more efficiently. “It’s an intuitive system, we’ve always run two chart plotters but if one shut down then they both shut down," The touchscreen controls will help the team to easily find information on weather patterns and tide, as well as find and contact nearby commercial ships for help. Graeme says one of the big advantages is that it cannot only tell how far away the ships are, but also what speeds they are travelling at. He says the new systems were
much easier to train on. “The old ones were a nightmare. If you hadn’t had a callout for a couple of months then it was almost like learning how to use them again." Although the hull of the boat is 15 years old most of the fittings in the craft are all new and up to date. The Inflatable buoyancy collars were replaced last winter. Graeme says coastguards are often called out for tows due to flat batteries or dirty fuel. A crew of four people is the minimum requirement for a tow, with more coastguard members required for search and rescue missions.

Skate tour concludes in Richmond
Jacob Chandler
The Tasman Skatepark Tour concluded in Richmond with another year of grinds, jumps and flips. Young people came from all over the region to compete in the event which included competitions for BMX bikers, skateboarders and scooters, with junior, senior and open sections. Competitors are judged on many factors such as style, tricks and skatepark utilisation. Tom Bassett-Eason, 13, represented Takaka and took out the first place prize for senior BMX.
He says he put a lot of preparation into practising for the event. “I just go to the skatepark everyday and I have my own dirt jumps in my backyard.” He says he had been riding for seven years and loves competing. “I come here every year and just do the best I can.” Tom also competed at Mapua, Takaka, Tapawera and Brightwater competitions, scoring enough points to be crowned overall BMX champion. Tom will receive a $400 Giant Method BMX. Kelsyn MacDonald, 12, of Tapawera won the scooter championship and Reggie Mcdonald, 11, of Takaka won

the skateboard championship. Corey Muir, 12, of Nelson says he wasn’t too sure how he went after his scooter run, but was thankful of his supporters. “When you fail a trick sometimes you fail a whole run.” He says he was lucky to land his final trick. “I landed my last trick. I don’t usually land that pri/whip/air.” Event organiser Paul McConachie says it was another successful year for the event and it was great to see the youth utilising the skateparks. “The Nelson Skatepark fraternity is strong, with a bunch of older, more experienced riders showing great support.”

Bikes and caravans invited to wine and food festival
Simon Bloomberg Reporter
simon@waimeaweekly.co.nz
Organisers of the Brightwater Wine and Food Festival, being held at Middle Earth Vineyard on Sunday, February 15, are introducing one or two new innovations for the 11th edition of the popular event. Enjoying great wine, beer, food and live entertainment in Middle-Earth’s picturesque vineyard has always been the big attraction of the festival, which is run by Richmond Rotary as a fundraiser for the community. But this year, Richmond Rotary have tweaked the festival to make it more family-orientated, with parents being encouraged to bring their children. “We used to try and pretend that kids didn’t exist, which hasn’t worked, so we are changing things around this year,” Rotary’s Pete Glue says. “Children under-12 will still be free but we are catering for them this year with a children’s area. “Brightwater School is organising that and they know exactly how to entertain kids. It will make the

Photo: Simon Bloomberg. whole event a lot more familyfriendly.” Pete says they are also keen to encourage people to use alternative transport to get to the festival, so they can enjoy a wine and beer without worrying about drinkdriving. He says biking along the Tasman Great Taste Cycle Trail or
taking a bus are two alternatives, while they are also encouraging campervan owners to consider staying the night at Middle-Earth Vineyard. “Everybody is concerned about the new, low alcohol limits so we wanted to actively promote safe alternatives. It means people can
enjoy the wine and beer without needing a sober driver to get home. “The cycle trail goes right past Middle Earth so it’s really convenient. Biking to the festival is also part of the Nelson Bikefest which starts this month.” Rotary is also providing security
for cars and bikes left at the vineyard on Sunday night for anyone deciding to catch a bus or ride home. The bus service will be operating between Nelson and Brightwater with pick ups from all SBL bus stops on the route, as well as outside the Richmond Holiday Park, Three Brothers Corner, Hope Store and Eden Rd. The bus will leave the Nelson SBL depot at 10.30am and Stoke, at Songer St corner, at 10:50am. It will leave Brightwater at 4pm, 5pm and 5.30pm. Pete says they have a good lineup of Nelson entertainers for this year’s event including Urban, Kramit, Paul Madsen and Antoni Neal. There will be the usual wide range of wine, beer and food stalls at the event which last year raised $29,800 for the community. Tickets can be purchased for $15 from Colour Plus Richmond, Haven Realty offices in Nelson and Richmond, Wakefield Supermarket, Brightwater Motors, Specsavers in the Richmond Mall, Village Cycles, Paper Plus Nelson, Brightwater Sprig & Fern and Hangar 58, or at the gate on the day for $20.

Music lovers descend on Nelson this week
Nelson is set to experience its biennial influx of well-heeled music lovers this week, with the Adam Chamber Music Festival drawing in guest stars and concert lovers from across the country and the globe. This is the 13th of the biennial festivals and is New Zealand’s only truly international festival. It attracts close to ten per cent of its audience from off-shore, as well as the international musicians. Artistic directors Helene Pohl and Gillian Ansell say the collaboration between international artists are the secret to the Adam’s success. “We can use different combinations of musicians to perform works that are rarely heard on the touring circuit,” says Helene. “It’s the excitement of hearing these newly-formed ensembles that is a major draw-card of the Adam Festival. For example, at Bach by Candlelight at the cathedral the two string quartets are joined by the Song Company, Douglas Mews (harpsichord), Joan Perarnau Garriga (double bass) and Robert Orr (oboe) in a programme that includes the Motet Jesu Meine Freude and the lovely soprano aria from Mein Glaeubiges Herze.” Tickets are being snapped up for the big evening concerts at the Cathedral and at Old St Johns, but there is also a programme of free events that includes a kids’ concert, master-classes and performances from the Troubadours who will be popping up in venues around the city. The restival brought over $2.3 million into the local economy in 2013 and is expected to exceed that this year. The Adam Chamber Music Festival begins with a gala dinner at the Woollaston Estate cellars on January 29 and concludes with the Grand Finale at Nelson Cathedral on Saturday February 7. Opinion
TUESDAY 27 January 2015
Thank you: I had reason to use both the After Hours Medical Centre and Accident and Emergency in Nelson, while I was here briefly. I found both places to be well run and efficient, but most of all I found the staff excellent. They were very patient, friendly and professional as well as personable. I have never heard so much laughter in an A&E before. Thank you for taking good care of me and well done Nelson for having such excellent facilities. Fiona. Fences needed for Noddy Train: Have to agree, the Santa Parade is more dangerous than the Noddy train ride. James Musso. Miserable bastards! Rayon Mackenzie. Pretty sure it only moves at walking pace. What's the problem? Caroline Mew. Pathetic. Too many stupid rules in this society. Kay Williams. How many children have been killed on this noddy train? Why fix something that is not broken? Can our children not have fun in this world anymore? Antoinette Wood. Too many damn rules alright... It's got to stop, its bloody ridiculous, who the hell are these people that make these rules? Why do they think

they can lord it over everyone and think their way is it? Christine Busch. Here we go again. The world is going mad with it's PC crap. Jenny Cunningham. Ridiculous - parental responsibility abrogated once again. This could see the demise of a well-meaning Lions project, designed to give pleasure to others. Anne Alan. Put a fence around Santa Parade. Yep, that sounds stupid and so does this stupid new rule. Let's just leave our children in a padded room with electronics in their face. Having real fun might kill them. Helen Patterson. Blackcaps play at Saxton Oval: Couldn't think of anything worse. Sitting in sun watching cricket all day. We have fantastic day at the river and made water slide. Kids played own cricket with a stick and ball. Now that's a day well spent. Jo Bishop. We could only watch the game for the last hour. Perfect timing!! Very exciting at the end, really enjoyed it! But I can imagine being there all day would have been extremely hot and maybe a bit boring at times. Martine Kessler. It was a great day out... beautiful weather and great entertainment. Kelly Oliver Craig Bartlett.
Managed to watch the last three overs. Best three overs of the game! Nikky Lohmann. Grey Power: When is Nelson Grey Power vice -president [Kevin] Gardener going to release the legal opinion promised to members before the aborted Special General Meeting, to supposedly endorse their unconstitutional actions in trying to dismiss the president, Neville Male. "It will be available in 36 hours". Well that has long passed and we the members who are paying for this legal opinion want to know what the opinion states. Are the claims of the "rebel group" that the vote of no confidence in the president held on 24 November 2014 automatically invoked clause 10.5 of the constitution, dismissing the president immediately, endorsed? Have all the "rebel" committee meetings held since the 24th of November complied with recognised NZ meeting practices and procedures and are constitutional? Why are there no minutes available for the members? And, most importantly, did the "rebel group" have the authority to dismiss the association secretary without notice or meeting natural justice requirements? The more this "group" does, the worse the situation is getting. Time they all resigned and let Neville and positive people get on with promoting Nelson Grey Power. Dan McGuire.

'Beachfest' coming to Tahuna this weekend A bigger, brighter, and bolder Beachfest returns to the Tahunanui Sports Fields on Saturday. The afternoon and evening of music is set to provide a finale to Nelson’s summer celebrations,
with a last chance for young revellers to party before the upcoming school year. Presented by Nelson YMCA and their young Raise Up crew, Beachfest 2.0 builds upon the inaugural Beachfest held
late last year, with a collection of Nelson-Tasman’s bands, artists, DJs and entertainers returning to perform live. For those who get into the Beachfest theme of “endless summer”
and get dressed up, some great prizes will be on offer. The event is free for 15-18 years and is strictly alcohol and drug free. Security and HYPE Street Ambassadors will be there to
help young people enjoy the Tahunanui beach area over summer at safe youth-friendly events. If the weather is wet on Saturday 31, ‘Beachfest 2.0’ will be moved to the following day.

Tyrell Archibald and his family have been overwhelmed at the generosity of Nelson companies and individuals who have offered their services to help out with the family’s house build in Mahana. Nelson Weekly published an article on Tyrell last week, who has sadly been diagnosed with terminal cancer and wishes to build a home for his young family. Several companies pledged their support, including Phoebe Guthrie Riordan putting on a variety show at The Playhouse at the end of February, Kleenaway Services donating a builders’ clean and Ruby Tuesday’s Hairdressers holding a raffle which raised over $200. As well as these, numerous building companies have jumped on board to help, with Advanced Access Solutions providing scaffolding, Tasman Roofing supplying the

Sunday’s Sarau Festival will not only celebrate the Moutere’s blackcurrant harvest but will also commemorate the soldiers from the district who fought in World War 1. Mapua’s Eileen Thawley has been compiling information on all the soldiers, which will be displayed in a history tent at the festival. She hopes people with connections to the soldiers will visit the festival and read about the transport ships, war grave data, as well as the mayor’s speech given when the soldiers departed Nelson. Festival coordinator Jenny Leith says, that along with the Moutere’s history, plenty of other activities will be on offer for everyone to enjoy. Celebrity chef, Steve Richards from awardwinning café Jester House, will be cooking up some favourites and two interesting guests will also speak. There will be over 100 stalls including arts, crafts and food from the district. Entertainment is sponsored by Ribena and features Trudi Wilson and Jasper, the Raijin Taiko Drummers, Ella Doty, Ceol River, Voila and the Motueka Highland Pipe Band playing throughout the event. The children’s play area has been upgraded from last year and includes a new Kids Zone, where young ones receive a stamp to play within the safe child-friendly zone while parents relax nearby. The Sarau blackcurrant festival and country market will be held this Sunday at the Moutere Hills Community Centre in Upper Moutere, from 3pm to 9pm. Entry for adults is five dollars with free entry for children.

New in 2015 If you want to work in microbiological and chemical laboratories and prefer actually doing things to sitting in a classroom, Real World Education’s programmes may be right you. Programmes are as short as 18 weeks; some are longer. Background material is delivered by highly-interactive, online video lessons. Participants receive equipment and supplies for some at-home practice. However, most practical training is in real, professional laboratories around New Zealand, including Fonterra and Nelson’s own Cawthron. Participants learn how laboratory employers actually want things done. A programme with Fonterra (Clandeboye) placements starts 02 February 2015. A programme with Cawthron placements starts 16 March 2015. Typical participants have NCEA Level 2 and some chemistry knowledge; however, applicants are considered individually. Participants earn national science qualifications. Space in courses is very limited and can fill-up quickly. Scholarships are available. Information is available at www. REAL.ac.nz or by ringing 03-975-JOBS.
Karen Austin has been teaching people the skills behind speaking with confidence for over 30 years. Her weekly lessons cater to ages from primary to adult, with many starting as young as seven and working their way up the graded system. Karen teaches both speech and drama, for more performance-based speaking, or straight public speaking which encompasses all types of impromptu and prepared speaking. Karen’s lessons have seen younger students gain confidence and the skills to communicate within their own schoolroom discussions, while her adult students use lessons to better their communication skills for their field of work, gain skills to change fields of work, or improve their communication skills for interviews and promotions. Lessons involve a variety of activities and are generally in a small group situation. For greater confidence through speaking, contact Karen today. For the last three years I have escorted a tour to India, always including exotic Rajasthan. This year is no different, except that we are including Kashmir for 5 nights. I am looking for 1 FEMALE to share a room with another female on this years tour. This is what past clients have said about my tours. “‘Rajasthan’ the very name conjures visions of the timeless Orient; fearsome Rajputs galloping across their semi-desert country from one impregnable fortress to another; peerless riders serving omnipotent maharajas. The times (as they do) have changed; as a small group of us formed as we wombled across the Thar Desert from one historysaturated city to another, delighting in the diversity, the magnificence, the unutterable beauty and animation of the places and people of this corner of India” - Christopher Vine “I thoroughly enjoyed my time in India, our small group tour was very well organised with excellent accommodation. We had an air conditioned vehicle with an incredibly capable bus driver. We experienced a good mix of culture and history...and had time for a variety of shopping. I will never forget the cultural diversity of India.” - Anna Barnett

Highly Recommended Being apart of Nelson’s largest property management team is great, and being named top property manager of the year for this group for two consecutive years is one of my proudest achievements. The key to my success has been fairly simple, I need happy property owners relying on me to look after their investment. If people think I am giving a great service then they will tell others to come to me. Over my seven years as a property manager I have learned most people are happiest when you are direct, honest and reliable. I understand landlords would choose to have a conversation with a property manager over hearing a well rehearsed sales pitch. After having 2014 off for the birth of my first baby I am back now with renewed energy, drive, and motivation to again achieve great things with my landlords. I challenge any property owner in the Nelson area currently renting or thinking about renting their house out to give me a call and have a chat. Let my passion to succeed be your key to a happy investment. “Steph has been our property manager for several years now and there is nobody that we would rather have looking after our properties. Steph has excellent communication with us, creative ideas and always works to get the best price and the best tenants. I would recommend Steph as your first choice Property Manager.” - Mark and Angela Bright

There were also two young women swept under the bow of a yacht due to poor assessment of their drift and leeway, whilst in the current of an incoming tide. I reviewed this incident on camera and also saw their coach briefly trapped by the same vessel and tide. Luck – that is the only thing that saved any one of those lives this week. Lucky

Boat handling is a fine art and it is always a pleasure to watch those who are good at it. Safe arrival and departure is an understated goal and one which many fail to achieve due to either poor assessment of the risk or under-rating the influence of the tide and currents. During the last week we experienced four young people making poor decisions: 1. Their boat wasn’t fit for purpose. 2. No lifejackets
they were seen, lucky calls were made, lucky help wasn’t far away. During February and March, Port Nelson will experience some of the largest tides I have seen in five years. Along with the tide come the stronger currents. Stay out of the water mid tide if you are not a strong swimmer, know where your vessel's leeway is taking you, keep a sharp look out. The national series is the most important part of the New Zealand Drag Racing calendar because it gets everyone touring around the country, which would not be possible for most regular race meetings. The chance to have the first place marking of 1NZ on the side of their car is also a big deal for all serious drag racers, and is just as important as making records. Nelson’s most recent successes in the national series have come from a strong drag bike presence; Andy
Urwin-Wells, Craig Adams and Mark Pahl are all chasing points this season, after Andy won it last year, with Craig runner-up. Race day starts around 10:30-11am with practice and qualifying runs, giving drivers a chance to get to know the track and how their car performs on it. As the day goes on the track will improve and by 12pm the action gets underway. Those chasing points will be positioned on a ladder according to their performance in the

It’s also the second round Nelson has held in a bid to encourage drivers from the North Island to travel and race in the south. The series runs throughout their season, which kicks off just after Labour weekend and comes to an end around Easter weekend.

The muscle cars race differently with drivers competing to get closest, if not dead on, their pre-set time. “Drag racing is generally a popular spectator sport because you can get close to the action,” says Clinton. “This is especially exciting if there are some good competition vehicles racing from out of town that will offer the noise and the smoke screens that car enthusiasts love to see.” The races this weekend will incorporate a number of classes, including street bikes and fully-fledged drag bikes, to muscle cars, street cars, door cars and full drag cars. “Pirtek Racing has a very cool Camaro that’s just been remodelled and had a lot more horsepower put into it; there are some really good cars in that Superstock class, they’re always good to watch, especially for the public who can recognise what they are, like the Camaro or Holden Monaro, and when you watch them race you get an understanding of the speed they’re going,” says Clinton. “There is a good field of super-

Father-daughter training helps Millie reach NZ Judo team Monique Bergman Reporter
monique@waimeaweekly.co.nz
When translated, the modern martial art of Judo means "gentle way". But there is nothing gentle about father and daughter, Paul and Millie Hammett, training against each other on the mat. On the same day Millie received her NCEA results, the year 12, Nelson College for Girls student was named in the New Zealand Judo team. She will compete at the 2015 Oceania Judo Championships to be held in New Caledonia in April. At only 15, she is one of the youngest members of the team and will compete in the cadet and junior women’s under 57kg grade. “It was very exciting and a relief to receive the email that said I made it into the New Zealand team, now I just have to focus on my competition and get fitter”, says Millie. Her dad Paul, is boxing in the Fight 4 Victory charity bout to be held at Saxton Stadium on April 4. The father of five says training against his eldest daughter Millie is one of his toughest challenges. “Judo training is helping with my fitness, core strength and agility in preparation for the boxing match. Training with Millie is hard, she is stronger than a lot of guys her age and she is so quick and just keeps on going like an Energiser Bunny,” says Paul. Millie trains at the Nelson Judo Club twice a week and travels once a week to Christchurch to train at the Canterbury Ama-

She also runs and bikes to keep up her fitness and enjoys training against her father. “Dad has a lot more strength than the people I usually fight, so that’s really good for my training, I like fighting against people who are bigger and stronger than I am, so when I get to competition it is the same intensity I have been training at,” says Millie. There will be a strong Nelson presence at this year’s Oceania Championships with four people from the region selected in the New Zealand Judo team. All team members will attend a compulsory training camp in Wanganui mid February, in preparation for the championships.

Top coaches help young volleyballers
Young volleyball players have been learning from the best, with a top line-up of coaches helping the Nelson Bays Volleyball Association run a three-day holiday skills camp at Saxton Stadium. About 90 school-aged children from around Nelson attended last week's camp which ended on Friday. New Zealand Youth Women's team coach Wayne Stirling, of Waikato, headed a stellar coaching staff that also included Wellington's Des Kerekere and national men's team captain, Pat Shone of Nelson. "We have been running these summer camps for a number of years and we're lucky enough, this year, to have some
excellent coaches," Nelson Bays Volleyball's Pam Brodie says. "We've also got some of the local coaches who are helping out and they'll learn a lot too." Pam says the coaching clinic was divided into two groups, with year 5 to 8 children attending a morning session and the year 9 to 13 students spending all day at Saxton Pavilion. It was aimed at teaching the game's basic skills which were put into practise in a series of games. "We are having fun here too but the emphasis is on learning skills. Young kids need to learn volleyball balls skills from day one and I think that's part of the reason that Nelson does so well at a national level."
A former Waimea College student, Wayne says young players benefit from coaching clinics because they "get more touches of the ball". "Volleyball is a sport where you need a lot of contact with the ball and they get plenty of that here. The clinics are also an opportunity for young players to hear a different voice and perhaps some different ideas." Wayne, who left Waimea College in 1978 and now teaches at Te Aroha College, says he is impressed with the standard of young volleyball players in Tasman. "It shows the benefits of what is happening in the schools and in the association," he says.
WEIGHT LIFTING COMP: Pete Joblin from Nelson, who is a member of the Results Gym, easily lifts 100kg at the Olympic Weight Lifting competition held at Results Gym in Nelson last weekend. Twenty-seven competitors from Nelson took part in the first sanctioned Olympic Weightlifting competition to be held in Nelson for 27 years. The competition was held as practice for the upcoming new head-to-head series to be held on February 14. It will see two teams of eight lifters from Christchurch and Nelson competing against each other. Photo: Monique Bergman.
