Mum becomes fire fighter Jacqui Rawson Reporter

Anthea Shearer has made the move from fulltime mum to firefighter. It was determination and hardwork behind Anthea’s graduation into a job she loves. “At the start, I could only do three push-ups,” laughs Anthea. Part of the application process includes a level of physically fitness. Anthea was cardio fit, but her strength needed development and twice she failed the fitness test which has the same requirements for women as it does for men. Her determination to pass the test cemented for her just how much she wanted to be a firefighter. After one and a half years in the gym, getting her upper body strength up to scratch, along with some delay through Covid, Anthea passed and went onto

roundabout, but the degree of the initial impacts have been more severe than expected. “Local businesses are being impacted financially and I can’t imagine what things are going to be like once schools go back,” says Moxini’s owner Wayne Boote.

Only a week into the major roadworks on the roundabout and two businesses, Raewards Fresh and Zinc Café BBQ & Heating find there profits are down by 3040%. This amounts to thousands of dollars for Raewards. It’s not only the bottom line af-

fected. Staffing numbers and hours have had to be adjusted to meet the downturn in customers. Confusion on how to navigate through the dug-up roads to the businesses and the associated lack of convenience have been keeping customers away.

“Signage has not been adequate, but they have been working on improving it,” says Wayne. In a meeting last Friday, the Council approved more signage to be added in places with greater

Just getting back to normality and the tried and tested routine.

Makes no difference to me as I love being at home with my wife and daughter!

Most definitely some quiet time and having a tidy house again.

I’ll tell you what I’m not looking forward to: all the traffic back on the roads!

Roundabout cuts straight through businesses bottom line FROM PAGE 1 visibility for customers. The roundabout straddles the boundaries of both the Nelson City and Tasman District Councils with the current roadworks being project managed by Graham Rimmer of the TDC. The business owners have raised concerns regarding the impact on their business, seeking assistance through rate relief, but this was declined. “Compensations aren’t paid out to businesses by Councils for any infrastructure projects,” says TDC’s acting engineering services manager, Dwyane Fletcher. “It’s part and parcel of a growing community with the long

term gains the benefit for the whole community.” The project’s forecast for completion is July withbusinesses concerned it’ll drag out longer. Graham Rimmer says there is a definite July completion date for the project. “The key for us would be having it done as fast as possible,” says Raewards Fresh owner, Laura Caldwell. The tender for the roadworks being undertaken by Fulton Hogan doesn’t allow for night or weekend work, added Laura’s husband Gareth Caldwell. “Projects never have budgeting for night or weekend work because of the associated cost,” says Graham.

Consultation by TDC has been a disappointment according to business owners, Wayne saying that Fulton Hogan had already been given the tender before the TDC approached them. Graham says the Council has had face-to-face meetings with the businesses and continues to send newsletters, adding that the contract with Fulton Hogan’s includes direct liaison with the businesses. Most of the business owners voiced their appreciation of the Fulton Hogan project manager. “The shops are definitely open for business and we encourage customers to keep using them,” says Graham.

says Wendy Pearson. Wendy said it was heartbreaking to see that first home buyers without parental help are really struggling to get into the market. With multiple offers being made on houses, it isn’t necessarily the money offered that dictates whose offer is accepted. Wendy says more often vendors accept the offer with the fewest conditions. “Conditions needed to meet Kiwi Saver requirements can mean first home buyers’ offers are more conditional than investors’” she says. Of the fifteen provinces surveyed by CoreLogic, Nelson Tasman had the lowest percentage increase in average house prices for the last quarter. For the past 12 months, the percentage increase of 9.2 percent was lower than most areas, only topping Queenstown whose average increase was only 0.3 percent. Over the same period, Gisborne’s average house prices rose 30.4 percent. While the average price of a house in Tasman is slightly lower than in Nelson, the average increases have been higher. Realestate.co.nz spokesperson Vanessa Taylor said stock shortage would likely continue to prove challenging for buyers at the beginning of 2021.

New site underway for Appleby firefighters Jacqui Rawson The Appleby Fire Station has been in its current location for 30 years, but the groundwork is underway for a new location for the station. “We needed a new building that was fit for purpose,” says Appleby Fire Station deputy controller Bella ClarkMelchers. The new building will be on the corner of the Moutere Highway and Redwood Valley Road. Providing easier access, more room for vehicles, and being in closer proximity to emergency civil defence equipment are all benefits of the new location due to be completed in July this year. “The new building will also provide a great central community facility,” says Bella. “We’re so thankful to the O’Connor family who have generously and graciously allowed us to use the current site and serve the community, rent-free for the past 30 years,” says principal rural fire officer Ian Reade. It’s further community spirit like that shown by the

O’Connor family that has had some bearing on the new site. Ted Ford has been part of the Appleby Fire Station’s crew for over 30 years and the new site will be occupying some of his family’s land. The Ford family donated the land for the use of the fire station. The rest of the land for the site was purchased from the Tasman District Council (TDC) by Fire and Emergency New Zealand. Plans for a new site were underway in 2015 under the Rural Fire Authority, which was made up of the TDC, Nelson City Council, 141 Plantation, Tasman Pine Forests and the Department of Conservation. When the Rural Fire Authority became FENZ in 2017, the project was picked up and is being funded by them. Things commenced on the 11th of January with a dawn ceremony and the laying of the Mauri stone. This custom represents the life force or the essence of the building and the important work that will be done there. Appleby Fire Station crew and the Ford family also laid stones.

A Richmond coffee shop is giving patrons a helping hand when it comes to Covid tracing. Lydia’s Café has placed the Covid QR scan code in plastic ‘table talkers’ on each table in their coffee shop. “People forget to scan when they come through the door,” says the owner of Lydia’s Café, Eddie Bradford. Eddie’s wife Del had the idea two weeks ago to provide a more accessible way for customers to do Covid tracing. “With the doors open in summer, people don’t see the poster on the door as

easily,” says Del. “Plus, people are in a hurry to get in and get a seat during our peak times, so they forget to scan,” says Eddie. All these factors can lessen the amount of tracing taking place. Having the QR scan on the tables means once people are settled and waiting for their coffee or meal, they have plenty of time to scan. “I just think it’s a wonderful idea and wish all cafes would introduce something similar,” says customer Ken Horrill. The case of the woman who was released from a Managed Isolation Quarantine (MIQ) facility in Auckland over the weekend with the South Afri-

can variant of Covid-19 is a timely reminder that Covid tracing is really necessary. The use of her Covid tracer app means authorities have been able to identify about 30 locations in Northland that she visited after her release. "What's required now is to not only test the people who have been in direct contact like family members and so on - but also to start encouraging people to turn up and be tested en masse so that there can be some reassurance that there aren't any other cases in the community," says University of Auckland Professor of Medicine, Des Gorman.

Impressive support for locals after Murchison house fire Jenny Nicholson The Murchison community has got behind locals whose house was badly damaged in a fire early Saturday evening. “The residents of the house are being really well looked

after by the community,” says Murchison Tea Rooms employee Tracey Fothergill. She said that Rex Smith supplied a self-contained bus for them to live in until things are sorted. “It’s a really nice bus and

they can put it at their place so they can be with their dogs,” says Tracey. One of their dogs, a small three-legged dog called Bear, is still missing and Tracey says people are a bit worried about him. Friends at work have given

to a fire on Cromwell Street around 5 pm. The fire was well ablaze when the first crew arrived. Two crews from Murchison attended and were supported by Reefton and Tapawera, who each sent one crew.

One person was treated for a minor burn to their arm. A fire investigator was paged but did not attend as the fire was not being treated as suspicious. If you would like to make a donation, the account is NBS 03 1354 0562064 00.

Although she and husband don’t work on the same shifts, the way the shifts are organised means they end up having four days out of eight off at the same time, giving them lots of time to share their passion for mountainbiking. It will be another 2 years until Anthea is a fully-qualified firefighter with a couple more week-long courses to go,

along with more assessments and exams. She’s still quite a newbie at the station but says everyone is supportive. Being a firefighter means being part of a team that has to be there for each other in what can be dangerous situations, so everyone looks out for each other, says Anthea. Anthea has no concerns about wearing a uniform, getting dirty and having ‘helmet hair’, but did get a bit of a name for herself during training because of her beautifully painted nails.

A treasure trove of hidden art Jacqui Rawson It’s a special garden that sits inside the Carson family’s beef farm in Tapawera. As well as cattle, a third of the farm is forestry, but there’s almost a hectare that’s been left to nature and the sculptures that have been popping up amongst it for the past 15 years. Most of the sculptures have been produced by local artist David Carson, who says it took him a while to get over his hesitancy of having the label of artist applied to him. “I would just work with things that came to hand and see where they would go,” says David. His parents weren’t artistic, but they were creators of things with a functional purpose. It was the way of living in the country in their time. His dad would build things for his mother to make use of from things available on the farm, such as for weaving. The first ‘official’ piece of art David made was created as a gift for his wife Rachel and took 18 months to complete. But the pleasing reaction from people encouraged him to create more pieces. The original piece, which still takes pride of place in the garden, is entitled ‘The Babysitter’, which might seem an unusual

name for a metre-high basket woven from the blades of saws. “Art can be anything,” says David. The creek that David spent his summer days playing around as a child is at the beginning of the garden walk. A mown path leads from there, surrounded on both sides by trees, meandering along while pieces of sculpture literally pop up out from among the different types of foliage. Some are steadfast designs that appear like sentries while others are hung and move around in the breeze. Some are brightly coloured while others are of such a natural appearance you might miss the fact they’re there. David is currently working on something new for him, with a plan to exhibit in Auckland later in the year. The Hidden Sculptures Garden is just over 30-minutes south of Richmond on the Motueka Valley Highway near Kohatu. You can take a picnic to enjoy in the grounds or stay the night in their accommodation. It’s also close to the newly-opened Kohatu and Tapawera section of The Great Taste Trail. Cost is $5 for adults and is open October until April from 10 am until 5 pm or by appointment.

Alysha Tinetti-Henry paid close to $100 for petrol and drinks for a family of Australian tourists whose card declined payment last week. “I heard his card keep declining and his missus looked stressed, they had kids and I have kids and would hate to be in that situation,” says Alysha. Alysha didn’t think it was anything special, but Mobil Murchison employee Alan Goodman thinks it was something amazing. The customer had filled up with petrol and bought several drinks when his card declined. “He said there was thousands of dollars in the account and didn’t know why it was declining,” says Alan. The man walked out to the car to try and sort the situation. Alan served Alysha and that was when she offered

to pay, and not just for the petrol but for the drinks, too. Alan says he is so impressed with a young mum doing something so generous. Alan went out to the car to tell the couple someone had paid for them. “Today’s your lucky day. A local paid for your petrol and your drinks,” Alan told them. He says the women burst into tears and, looking embarrassed, happy and surprised, said it was the most amazing thing she’d known of. By that time, their money had gone through and they gave Alan the money to return to Alysha. While Alysha was pleased to get her money back, she wasn’t expecting it. “I know there is always someone worse off than me. I’ve got two kids and a mortgage, but I have a house. It made me feel good to help,” she says.

Papps Car Park – The man behind the name Marg Farrelly Joshua Frederick Papps came from Holt in Wiltshire, England, on the ship Forfarshire. He embarked at Tilbury near Gravesend, early in November 1872, arriving in Wellington, New Zealand, during March 1873. He travelled as an assisted emigrant, the total cost of his passage being £13. He had contributed £4 in cash with promissory notes for a further £8. His occupation at the time, and in the 1871 England Census, was given as ‘carpenter’. The voyage did not get off to an auspicious start with the boatswain falling overboard five days after setting sail. Fortunately, a longboat was lowered and the man rescued, suffering only a broken leg. Joshua married Selina Ann Timms in January 1874, the couple having seven children together. Selina died in 1892, aged 36 years. Four years later Joshua married Bertha Win, during September 1896, at

Dovedale, fathering a further six children. Joshua settled in Richmond where he established a coachbuilding and wheelwright business in 1874, on the corner of Queen and Cambridge Streets. The workshop frontage extended 30 metres on Queen Street, reaching back 12 metres on Cambridge Street. The workshop had a second storey where the paintwork was done, away from the dust of the street. Joshua focussed on constructing the coach bodies and fashioning the iron rims for the wheels, while his sons were the wheelwrights. He built up a large trade with connections in all parts of Nelson, Westland, and Marlborough. In 1906, Joshua and his sons established a branch of the business in Motueka. An advertisement at the time stated ‘all kinds of vehicles made to order. Vehicle repairing and painting in first-class style.’ Joshua provided exhibits of traps, carts and vehicles of

He completed a term of 29 years as Grand Master of the Loyal Travellers’ Rest Lodge, Manchester Unity Independent Order of Oddfellows. Manchester Unity, along with other Friendly Societies, was credited with providing medical and social support before Government introduced Social Security in 1938. Joshua retired in 1919, handing the business to his sons Henry and Charles to carry on. He moved from Richmond to live in the Wakefield area. Joshua died in April 1938 from broncho pneumonia. He was aged 89 years. Bertha lived until she was 93, dying in 1959. They are buried in the Richmond Cemetery. Nelson Matters The critical issue for Nelson and New Zealand this year is the successful rollout of the Covid19 vaccine. It is urgently needed to protect New Zealand from the disease and to enable our communities and economy to recover. Covid-19 infected 100 million people in 2020 and 2 million have died. The Retro Vintage Market followed its inauguration in 2020 with its second successful annual event. “It’s a chance for people to edit their collections,” says one of the Retro Vintage Market founders, Katrina Richards. The Retro Vintage Market came into fruition through three different people and their differing reasons behind holding a retro event to de-stash or re-stash. Katrina’s move away from Dunedin and a 3-bedroom house to Nelson with a 1-bedroom cottage left her with a need to downsize. Brodie HemmingsSykes moved from Christchurch to Nelson and thought her love of retro clothing would be a good introduction to meeting

Just A Thought...

Hi everyone! One of the amazing things Jesus said to His followers was recorded for us in John 15:11. Jesus said: ‘I have told you these things so that My joy may be in you and that your joy may be complete.’ I want us to focus in on a fact established in this verse i.e., that Jesus desires His followers to ex-

people. Lois Boyd wanted an avenue for selling vintage and retro items that didn’t involve Trade Me or garage sales. “We’re glad we started the market because the second time round has been an even better success,” says Katrina. Like a lot of events, the Retro Vintage Market moved from the Stoke Hall to the Hope Recreational Hall for this year’s event and the larger space it provides. There were 18 stall holders displaying their wares on 24 tables, and over 15 clothing racks selling retro and vintage clothing, jewellery, homewares, collectables, books, sheets, and fabrics, and lots more besides. “People spent a lot more time at home last year which made them relook at their stash and work out what they would be

happy to let go to others,” says Katrina. New for them this year was coffee and tea and a legendary array of home baking provided as part of a fundraiser run by the Soroptimists. The Soroptimists are an international group whose mission is to inspire action and create opportunities to transform the lives of women and girls. "The hall was full and buzzing with enthusiasm for the old stuff," says Lois. Organisers were happy that their customers covered a diverse range of locals, tourists and younger generations drawn by the retro clothing. Those keen to be involved as a seller or a buyer in 2022, make sure to keep an eye out in January as the Retro Vintage Market will be back.

perience joy in their lives. To me this is a revolutionary concept! You see, as long as I have been a follower of Jesus, I have been aware that God wants us to be holy, but I only recently got the memo that He also wants us to be happy (happy in Him). Now, this is not the only verse that makes clear that a believer’s joy is important to God, in fact, it is seen in many places in Holy Scripture (e.g., Gal 5:22-23, Rom 14:17, 2 Cor 6:10, Acts 13:52, Ps 118:24, Dt 28:47-48 etc.) One clear example that strikes me is from the book of Philippians. The apostle Paul, inspired by God, wrote this letter as he was unjustly incarcerated in a cold, uncomfortable, crowded, unhygienic, dark prison (probably in Rome). Here in this prison Paul made clear that he knew joy – a joy that was obviously not dependent on his circumstances! (see also 2 Cor 6:10). Now, as you read Philippians it’s clear that Paul’s joy was found in delighting in the risen Jesus. In this same letter (Phil 4:4) Paul

encouraged believers to also find their joy in Jesus, exhorting them to “…REJOICE IN THE LORD always and again, I say REJOICE…” Friends, it’s not selfish to seek our joy in Jesus - quite the oppoBecause the power can be restored at any time after an site in fact - because our joy in unexpected outage, treat all lines, electrical installations and Him brings vitality to our worwiring as live during an outage. ship, our service, our relationIf your power goes off turn off any sensitive electronic ships and our witness. equipment such as entertainment systems, computers, and You see, “God is most glorified washing machines at the wall. Severe weather events and storms can occur at any time, even during the summer months. Now is a great time to make sure you have everything you need should the weather cause a power outage. Make sure you have: z A torch and extra batteries. z Either a fully charged cell phone, a landline phone that doesn’t require electricity, or if your landline phone is supplied by fibre you may need a UPS or battery backup. z A supply of water that isn’t dependent on an electric pump. z A BBQ or gas cooker. z A supply of matches or a lighter. If a member of your household is medically dependent on electricity, in addition to making sure you have the items above you should have an emergency plan in place. Your plan should include: z An established network of people you can call on for help and their contact details. z Knowledge of your medical equipment: » Does it have an audible “no power” alarm that will alert you to a power failure? » Does it have battery back-up or a standby source of power and for how long? » Do you know how to use the backup or standby equipment and are you confident that you could operate the equipment in an emergency? z An evacuation plan that includes where you will go, how you will get there, a pre-packed bag with the things you will need and if necessary arrangements for your pet. Remember to notify family and friends who might be concerned for you. z Instructions on how to manually operate an electrically operated garage door - if you need to evacuate, you may need to manually operate an electrically operated garage door to do so.

Outstanding members of Brightwater community Jo Kent Reporter

jo@waimeaweekly.co.nz

Brightwater residents Pat Lithgow and Diane Drogemuller are among the winners of the Tasman District Council’s Outstanding Community Service Awards 2020. The awards recognise the region’s volunteer heroes whose continued dedication, generosity and kindness over the last 20 years has been greatly appreciated in the local area. “Pat has always given his best to help the community, especially in leading roles,” says nominator for both winners, Councillor Anne Turley. “With the support of his wife Angela he has been involved in multiple projects that enhance the community’s well-being and safety.” With funding from the Council, Pat and Angela renovated the Village Green gardens, and he was also the catalyst for completing the car park behind the Green, as well as building the picnic table. He also arranged for a book exchange on the Green, which is due for completion soon, and for several public seats to be built, including a seat of remembrance in front of the Anzac Memorial.

Pat serves on the local committee of Ulysses New Zealand, as well as the Nelson Motorcycle Safety Group. He also served for four years on Road Safe Top of the South. “There are so many other volunteers who never get a mention,” says Pat. “The spotlight shouldn’t only be on a few of us. So many people go under the radar, so I’ll accept my award for us all.” Diane Drogemuller is also a valuable member of the Brightwater community who has gone above and beyond, time and time again. She’s been on the Brightwater Recreation Reserve Management Committee for 35 years, being chairperson for four years, and has looked after Centennial Park grounds all the while. Diane’s valuable service through the Wanderers Club sees her wearing many hats, not least when she cooks up a storm in the kitchen for many a hungry player. The coordination role she held during the Pigeon Valley Fires, where she became a base for the fire crews to eat and sleep and a drop off point for people to donate food for those affected, illustrates her dedication to service. She’s also co-ordinated building projects, supervised com-

munity work and been involved with a myriad of roles associated with cricket, tennis and rugby. The projects she has been behind over the years are infinite and there are far too many to count or even remember. “I’ve lived in Brightwater for 45 years and have been involved in so much it’s hard to even recall most of it”, says Diane. “I’d be hard pushed to be classed as a ‘local’ even after all these years as there are some who have been here since day dot! It’s great that I’ve been recognised, and I’d do it all again in a heartbeat.” Nominations for the 2021 awards close on 30th June. Nominees must be residents of Tasman District to qualify. They must have been involved in a range of voluntary activities that have benefited their community for 20 years or more. Fire Service personnel must have served 35 years to be eligible. A committee comprising the Mayor and other members of Council meets to evaluate the nominees and their contributions, and then winners are chosen. To nominate someone, go to tasman.govt.nz and download a nominee form.

The Brightwater Community Association and the director of sports at the Wanderers club, Marty Davis, would like to see upgrades on the current gym, club rooms, tennis courts and volleyball courts. They also hope to see a hub created for use by members and the community. Marty and chairperson of the BGWCA Matt Stuart spoke with the TDC and approval has been given for renovations and improvements. The facility is already being used by several groups including seniors balance and mobility classes and

seniors’ classes in high demand, and people travelling from Hope and Richmond to join in, an additional class has been added. Unlike city gyms, there isn’t a big fee. Instead, it is community-based and driven. The Brightwater Committee is wanting to cater for those who want to participate as their own small group. To facilitate this, they are hoping to have tennis and squash rackets available so that cost is not a deterrent. They are hoping to extend facility usage to residents of Spring Grove, Wakefield and Upper Moutere.

Richmond mortgage broker Mark Papps was the overall winner at the Brightwater flower show on Saturday with his decorative miniature dahlia. “Mark’s dahlia was absolute perfection. When it was brought in it was at its best and had zero faults,” says Brightwater Horticultural Society’s secretary, Cheryl Thibodeau. Mark says he got the flower gene from his grandfather, who started the first nursery in Nelson, and his parents who owned a nursery featuring roses and fuchsias. While he didn’t follow in their career footsteps, he does love getting in the garden for stress relief. The majority of blooms in the show were dahlias, but potted plants, succulents, cacti, vegetables, roses and cut flowers were also exhibited. The entries were from 21 people across the Nelson Tasman region and across the ages. Around 200 people viewed the display on Saturday.

Wakefield Summer Roaster run Yvonne West

Conditions were excellent for the first of the 2021 Waimea Harrier Events; the Wakefield Summer Roaster 5 and 10km Fun Runs held on Saturday, 23rd January. This annual event has become very popular, with 130 partici-

pants this year enjoying the picturesque track through Faulkner Bush and the scenic rural countryside around Wakefield. The 5km was an ‘out and back’ course through and around Faulkner Bush and along 88 Valley Road to a 2.5km turn-around point, while the 10km followed on along 88

Valley Road to the steep ascent of Totara View Road. While this provided a significant challenge for the walkers and runners, they were rewarded by panoramic views out over the Nelson area on their descent along Kilkenny Place and back down to the village. Angela Leck recorded the fast-

est time of 19.51mins over the 5km course, while Curtis Moore led the 10km runners home in an equally impressive time of 38.31mins. The fastest walker over the 10km distance was Kaz Halket in 75.08 mins. While for many of the participants this was an excellent train-

ing run for the Buller Marathon, Half Marathon or 10km Event to be held early in February, for some it was the challenge of walking or running their firstever 5 or 10 km event. It was great to see a number of family groups out enjoying running or walking together.

Nelson drivers in the spotlight as Grand Prix decided By Jody Scott The final race at the Capelli Hair Salon New Zealand Street Stock Grand Prix became Nelson versus the rest of the field, on Saturday night at the Milestone Homes Top of the South Speedway. The potential podium changed lap by lap, with plenty of whispering in the pits before the final race meanting that plans were being made. The drop of the green flag soon showed what those chats involved as the top Nelson cars were in the line of fire. Steve Soper received plenty of attention early on before Ryan Musgrove and Matt Watson became targets themselves. They found a few allies from Canterbury and Gisborne to help their cause, but points leader Otago’s Benji Smaill had an unimpeded run in the final race to claim the crown to add to his South Island title.

Darrel Richards from Dunedin, the recently crowned 1NZ, was spun a couple of times but recovered to get enough points to be tied in second spot meaning a run-off with Mike Jones from Canterbury who had won the final heat. The ensuing run-off won by Jones was later declared void after a late relegation during the run-off gave Richards another point and second overall. Jones settled for third after a cointoss with Nelson’s Ryan Musgrove after racing had finished. The night’s racing started with plenty of action. Spots in the final were tough to earn, with two former champions missing the cut. The finals group took a while to sort after lap scoring issues delayed final points. Paul Leslie won both his qualifiers and was clearly the fastest car, but after winning the opening final heat he suffered front wheel dam-

Richmond trainer Murray Pash may be 75 years old, but he is showing no signs of slowing down any time soon. Murray is currently training four horses and was thrilled to pick up his first win of the season with Jazelle in the Eckford Engineering Mobile Pace (1850m) at Waterlea Raceway last Sunday. “It was good to get it because others out of Jass (her dam) have won races this season, so I was dragging the chain,” Murray says. “She has been a good producer, that mare.” Jazelle had been having a tough time of it this preparation, but regained form on the Blenheim track on Friday when finishing runner-up. Murray took a lot of confidence from that run and was duly delighted when his mare stormed home late to win by three-quarters of a length. “I am very pleased,” Murray says, “we have had a bit of bad

luck with her, but it turned out well today.” Adding to the occasion was Pash’s wife Cheryl’s involvement in the horse. “Cheryl, my wife, races the horse in her father Noel Berkett’s colours, he was in trotting for many years,” Murray says. “He won the (New Zealand Trotting) Cup with Mobile Globe in 1952.” Based in Richmond, Murray Pash faces a lot of time on the road to race his small team and he said it has been nice racing closer to home over the holiday period, in what he says is the lifeblood of the industry. “Westport, Reefton, Nelson, and Blenheim have been going for ages at this time of the year and it’s good for the public.” “There are that many people on holiday in Nelson and you just have to look at the turnover figures which proves the point that country clubs need to be kept going.” Murray has been training since

the moon landing (1969) after catching the racing bug as a kid from his mother’s childhood friend, Hec Henderson. “My mother came from a place called Orari which was a big horse area and a guy by the name of Hec Henderson went to school with her,” he says. “He shifted to Christchurch and got to know Mum and Dad again, and he first started out when I was eight, I had my first drive behind a horse and I got the bug.” Murray has been based in Richmond since the early 1970’s and he said has been associated with some class horses in that period. “A horse I sold to Australia called Macraider went on and broke a record for a threeyear-old in the States on a fivefurlong track,” he said. “And I qualified (1997 Gr.1 Rowe Cup winner) Eastburn Grant, who was a top trotter.” While 75 years old, Pash said he still intends on training for a few years to come.

Undermanned Wanderers no match for Stoke-Nayland Jacob Page

There were bent bumpers galore while a couple of engines did not go the distance and multiple tyres were destroyed. The Nelson drivers had three cars inside the top 6 going into the final race but all the attention took its toll. The stock cars had a couple of huge moments. Braden Russ was rolled in heat two before taking a huge hit in heat three. Wade Sweeting made it four out of four and pocketed the dash cash, while Dean Wratt had a

moment riding the wall out of turn four having a drive in the Michael Paynter machine. The youth ministocks were keeping the referees on their toes. It is super competitive racing and great to watch. Riley Eathorne claimed three wins on the night. Jacob Skurr had a moment in the final heat, sending a few drivers scrambling, plenty of steel work was required on several cars as they tried to avoid the broken Skurr car. Adie Drake and Kieran Sather-

ley took out the Mark Thorn Memorial Trophy in a small field, getting the jump on Brent Steer and Wade Thorn. The classic stock cars had a few runs with a few grades away competing around the country, but the street stocks turned on the entertainment on a busy night of racing. The next meeting will see the sprint cars return for their South Island title on February 13. The current War of the Wings series leader, Connor Rangi, will hope his solid form continues on his home track.

With Harsh Visavadiya on representative duty for the Nelson Griffins in the Hawke Cup qualifier at Horton Park against Marlborough and Boe Bamford unavailable, the Wanderers-Motueka Premier team knew that they were up against it when playing Stoke Nayland. The Taylors Contractors sponsored team hosted Stoke Nayland at Centennial Park in Brightwater and, batting first, were skittled cheaply with only Andrew Beatson able to reach double figures in the top order. Kyle Paki Paki fulfilled his role in the middle order, coming to the crease in the 13th over with the score at 42 for four, and eventually scoring 33. Unfortunately, none of his bat-

ting partners were able to make a meaningful contribution, with three of them actually not adding any runs at all. Sadly for the Wanderers-Mot team, the final wicket fell in the 28th over for a mere 112, of which 30 were extras. Chris Dittmer, with an unbeaten 54 and Josh Smith with 31 enabled Stoke Nayland to reach the 113 required in the 24th over, for an easy victory. Over at Jubilee Park, it was a similarly disappointing outcome, with the Wanderers 2nd grade bowling Waimea Toi Toi United out for 184 in the 38th over which was a positive, however the batting was exposed by the WTTU bowlers who dismissed Wanderers for 39 in the 14th over. Although a disappointing day

for the club, Harsh Visavadiya proved his worth to the Griffins team in Blenheim by dismissing Ben Wheeler with the first ball of his bowling spell, taking two for 48 off his 17 overs, and playing a key role in restricting the Marlborough side to 292. In the run chase Harsh came to the wicket with the score at 71 for three after 28 overs and set about his job as expected, in a partnership with Nic Clark which yielded 123 runs. Harsh scored 77 as Griffins chased down the target of 293, with a fine 40 not out from Joe O’Connor 40 getting them there with 27 overs to spare and still with a wicket in hand. The Griffins now travel to Rangiora to battle Canterbury Country in the Hawke Cup Challenge.

Dominik Berghamer If you followed the news and social media recently you could have come to the conclusion that NZ waters have become majorly shark infested all of a sudden. There have been sightings of bronze whalers, blue, thresher and mako sharks all over the Bay and a few spearos had some close calls when sharks took the fish they had shot. Should we be concerned? Probably not. The influx of large predators at this time of the year is a very normal occurrence and just happens to get a lot more media coverage this year. There is lots of bait in the Bay that attracts these majestic fish and even a dead whale with its own following got washed up. Sharks can detect wounded fish and burley trails from miles away so it’s no surprise they show up around boats. They are inquisitive and quite intelligent which means

that there are most likely a few bronze whalers out there now that associate spearfishermen with an easy meal (the shot fish, not the person). Not exactly a comforting thought but it doesn’t seem to deter many divers. The risk to beachgoers appears to be minimal, no serious shark attacks have been recorded in Tasman Bay over the last 200 years. The worst was a surfer knocked off his board by a bronze whaler outside the Boulder Bank in 2011. He got away with minor injuries. On the beach itself there was an incident in 2010 when a shark bumped into a swimmer without actually biting. There are also hundreds of huge stingrays that patrol our beaches but since they seem to be pretty docile - if you leave them alone - the incidence rate is very low, too. www.dawnbreakers.co.nz Tight lines!

Got an Opinion? Are you keen to research and produce some history articles? Photo: Supplied

Local history writers required Jacqui Rawson For the past 12 months, the Waimea Weekly has been providing history stories regularly and feedback from readers is to keep the stories coming. We’re keen to continue providing what our readers are keen for and we’re looking for a group of people interested in helping us out with that task. If you’re a budding history buff, a researcher, or someone who enjoys sharing facts and would like to share local history with our readers on a regular basis, then please get in touch.

We don’t require an expert in history or writing. Instead, someone who has an interest in history and is happy to do the research to cobble together the basis of an article. The paper can provide support as required to finalise the articles for the paper and you’ll join a group of like-minded history buffs. The information gathered as a result of the research is sought after by many and successful individuals will be helping to ensure that the local history continues to be passed onto our 12,000 readers. A fee will also be paid. Please email: editorial@waimeaweekly.co.nz with your interest.
