Voters get to have their say The race is on and those on either side are finding their voice in the build-up to the referendum on the amalgamation of Nelson City and Tasman District Councils. This week the lobby group 1 Council has released a list of those supporting a merger of the two councils and it stretches into three figures. On the anti-side, the Tasman-based group Your Community, Your Choice has released video footage of three TDC councillors voicing their disapproval of the plan and why. But the final decision comes down to voters in both Nelson and Tasman and this week they will get their turn to have a say on the proposal by the Local Government Commission that was released in January this year. The proponents are confident of a good result with local politicians, artists, business owners and teach-
ers publicly saying they support a merger of the two councils. Former Nelson mayor and Tasman winery owner Philip Woollaston is urging people to vote for the proposal. “Despite promised government reforms I believe this is the best chance to bring our councils together. As the region recovers from last year’s flooding, protects its assets with earthquake strengthening, and continues to face economic pressures – there is no better time to come together and work together.” Representative of electors Aldo Miccio is also confident that there will be a yes vote. “The crucial thing is for people to cast their vote. For change to happen, the people of the region have to make it happen by voting.” Voting opens this Friday and closes April 21.

School yard fire sale From desks to a dishwasher, from chairs to concrete pavers. Nayland College is preparing to get rid of it all in its first ever auction. The school is getting rid of all its disused items with money raised going to the school’s PTA. Deputy principal Richard Wilkins says it’s a great opportunity for buyers.
“We are hoping that our old stuff can be of use to people in the community. There is no reserve on anything, we want it all sold.” It is the first time the school has held such an auction and Richard says the need to keep raising money and a shed full of quality equipment was behind the decision. “There’s so much good stuff that it
would have been a waste to just take it to the dump so we are hoping it will go to some good homes.” The auction starts at 9.30am this Sunday, April 1. Sponsorship from Pomeroys means fresh coffee and a sausage sizzle will also keep punters happy while they wait for their auction item. The auction is being held at Nayland College.

Neighbours celebrate each other Rosie Thomsen Neighbours Day broke down fences and brought together communities all over Nelson. Even patchy weather couldn’t dampen spirits. Events were organised throughout the district in an effort to foster relationships within the community. Seaview Rd enjoyed an afternoon at Nayland College over a Pestell’s barbecue donated by Neighbourhood Support Nelson, with the kids competing in sack races and treasure hunts. Although rain relocated the fun from the field into the school hall and staffroom, organiser Liz Evans says the event was a total success. “Everyone’s having a ball.” Residents and business owners from the quaint, cobbled South St gathered for a “BYO chair, plate and cutlery” barbecue with plenty of indulgent nibbles and snacks provided by those who attended.
Kaye Hill, who helped organise the gathering, moved to the street last year from Christchurch. Kaye says she was pleased with the turnout and the efforts and involvement of the people who made it happen. “It’s a fabulous street; I’ve just felt so welcome since arriving,” she says. Tables were set up in the historic street amongst the cottage houses, laden with garlands of leaves and apples, soft music setting the atmosphere. The event was attended by around 50 residents and guests, many whom echoed the sentiment that they want more neighbourhood events to get people together. Neighbours Day originated in Auckland in 2009, but was taken national only last year. The intention is to turn streets into neighbourhoods and give people an opportunity in their busy schedules to get to know the people who share their community.

Nelson’s miracle child turns two As Nelson woman Kate Ogg hugged the body of her prematurely-born son to say goodbye after being told he had died, something unexpected happened. Little Jamie, at only 27 weeks’ gestation and weighing a little over 1kg, started breathing, a story that has now gone around the world. Within two hours he had opened his eyes, was moving around and drank some milk from his mother’s finger. On Sunday, Jamie and his twin sister Emily celebrated their second birthdays and are developing like other toddlers their age. In March 2010, doctors at Sydney Hospital fought for 20 minutes to save Jamie’s life when he and his sister were born too early. But they pronounced him dead and he was passed to Kate, who placed him on her bare chest to say goodbye. “We didn’t want him to hear us crying while he was dying, we wanted him to hear our voices so we started talking to him quietly, telling him his name and that he had a sister,” says Kate. “Next thing he’s gasping more regularly and starting to move and cry.” After Jamie started gasping more often and took breast milk off Kate’s fingers, she and husband David – who now works at Nelson Weekly – had to persuade the doctor to come back to look at him. But once in the room, he started explaining to the couple how Jamie had died. “And we’re saying, ‘Okay, so when he’s breathing it’s just a reflex?’. And he’s like, ‘Yep, you’re not seeing what you think you’re seeing.”’ After two hours the shocked couple had stopped believing what the doctor said and told him Jamie was not dead. “When I pulled him off my chest he was startled and waved his arms around and tried to cry again, and the doctor had a look on his face like ‘oh s***’.”
The amazing recovery has made the Oggs - who moved to Nelson from Australia last November - into strong advocates of skin-on-skin contact with newborn babies. The contact, known as kangaroo care, is said to normalise temperature, heart rate and respiratory rate, increase weight gain and reduce infections for preterm babies. Kate says she could see the results instantly when she lifted Jamie and Emily from their hospital incubator. Although it was a natural reaction to hold her baby for what she thought was going to be the last time, Kate believes skin-on-skin contact saved Jamie’s life. “If he didn’t have the warmth he would have died. I think he needed it. They come out and just imagine you’re in this warm, soft, quiet environment and next thing it’s freezing cold, bright lights.” But both Jamie and Emily are developing like other children their age. Their family has also grown, brother Charlie was born last April. The story has taken the Oggs around the world. Months after the recovery US broadcaster NBC flew the Oggs to New York to film their story and it has appeared in newspapers from the United Kingdom to Asia and Australia. David hopes telling their story will mean more awareness about kangaroo care. “If one other baby is saved this way then it would have been worthwhile.” Jamie and Emily celebrated their birthdays with kite flying at Tahunanui Beach along with their grandmother who visited from Sydney.

Summer farewelled in style They came to farewell summer and they came in their thousands. The Sprig & Fern Summer Fare attracted a record crowd on Friday night at Richmond's Sundial Square with stall holders just as happy as the punters they were serving. The summer of 2011/12 won't go down as one of the best weatherwise but it turned it on for its farewell, providing a cracker of a night for the estimated 3500 people who packed central Richmond. The family atmosphere dominated the event with local band Groove Collective getting people of all ages up on the dance floor until the 10pm closing. Richmond Unlimited manager Kim Quint says she was really happy that it ran so smoothly. "I'm rapt what a night and what a great crowd."
Stall holder and sponsor Dave Barrett, of the Sprig & Fern, says he was amazed with the turn out and it was the biggest yet. "It was fantastic, a really nice crowd and a massive turn out. We were really happy." A large contingent of teenagers also turned up for the event with all but a couple behaving themselves. Senior sergeant Craig Barker said on the night he was happy with how it had been run. "It's been a great event. Everyone's having a good time and enjoying themselves." Organiser Steve Page, of Richmond Unlimited, says he was thrilled with the event. "It was exactly how we wanted it, good fun with great food and drinks and no bad behaviour. It was a great chance to celebrate Richmond and everything good about our town."

From My Desk Grabbing a flat white to take away from Columbus Café, I head back up to my office armed with the latest catalogue from Kimberley’s. I am in love with jeans, and not surprising Kimberley’s stylish selection is fantastic. The range of different styles, denims and colours gives you such a brilliant choice going into winter. Classic shirts are making a comeback for this season and then layering with jackets or luxe knits. From plain to printed you have so many choices. It’s so fabulous to see that feminine is back, and with their brands like Marilyn Seyb, Metalicus, New London Jeans, Episode and many more labels, it is just a matter of you selecting your own winter look. You really must come into the store and try on the many gorgeous styles; the girls are incredibly helpful, led by Angela and her team, making shopping in their store such an enjoyable experience. Have a fabulous week and I look forward to meeting you here at Fashion Island.

Working holiday for sister city running again Wanted: a Nelson person to travel to and work in Japan for six months. That’s the brief two Nelson ladies who have both spent time working in Nelson’s sister city Miyazu were given recently. They are now hoping to find a local person to follow their footsteps and experience Japan. Jacqui Jury and Julia Achilles took part in the sister-city opportunity that gave them
a chance to spend time in Japan. The programme started 20 years ago but has not been active over the past decade. However, Julia’s former boss made the trip to Nelson earlier this year to get it up and running again and he is looking for a new Nelson staff member for his traditional Japanese Inn with hot spring baths, gourmet restaurant and cafe and international wine cellar

this winter. The job is on the outskirts of Miyazu and the right candidate will be between 18 and 30 years of age and keen on Japanese culture – although the successful applicant does not need to speak it. Love found online Each week leading up to the Nelson Wedding Show in early May Nelson Weekly is printing the nine finalists of the Jen Hansen Love Story competition. This week we have Chris and Barbelle’s story.
After fifteen years of marriage and numerous unsuccessful IVF treatments I was divorced and childless. Even though I felt confident being on my own, and I had a good social circle of friends, I was harbouring deep inside the wish to be given a second chance at love. Friends urged me to accept online dating as a kosher and legitimate way of our modern cyber times to look for a partner. It did not take long and I came across a profile without a photo which read like it had been written by an authentic, real and very decent
man. He said he was a single dad of an eight year old daughter and what he wrote about her made his profile even more realistic and non-pretentious. I knew I had stumbled across the profile of a man who stood out from the masses. After six weeks of corresponding we had our first blind date. I entered the café feeling curious and very nervous and I had believable excuses at hand for a hasty retreat if needed. When I saw Chris for the first time I felt shocked - he was so much taller, darker and more handsome than I could have imagined. He had the warmest and most sparkly brown eyes and I secretly wondered had he devised a way of putting glitter into his eyes. After half an hour in his presence I suddenly felt a deep knowing in my heart that he was the man I would spend the rest of my life with. I went home that day knowing my life had completely changed. The next weekend the three of us- Chris, Katie and I met for the first time. I felt so blessed not just to find my life partner, but also a stepdaughter and being given the chance to be a parent. For the last four years we have lived happily together, married and as a family. Every day I look into the eyes of my two most loved ones and am filled with gratefulness for the wonderful double blessing which was put in Chris and Barbelle tell their love story this week. my way.

Birchwood School celebrates new classrooms ministry wasn’t quite enough so the Board of Trustees raised a further $80,000 for the work. The classrooms have lots of glass, an outdoor learning environment and withdrawal spaces. Construction for the classrooms started before Christmas and Chris says anticipation has been high for the opening. “The children have had to move into other classrooms and the library while the building was going on so they have all been excited about getting in the new rooms.” The school’s student leaders cut the ribbon at the opening ceremony before parents took the opportunity to take a look through the new building.

TO THE EDITOR
We are living away from Nelson for a short while and we enjoy reading the Nelson Weekly on line. It is a great freebe for Nelsonians living anywhere to keep up with what is going on around the city. We enjoy the diversity of the paper and especially pleased to read about all the positive things happening. You give great coverage of the achievements of the young people of the city whether it be sport or scholastic or arts. It is so pleasing to see someone feeding us the positive things happening and not dwelling on the negative. Keep up the good work, P Stratford. The Local Government Commission should be sacked for producing such a shoddy and ill-informed reorganisation scheme for this region. They have done a real number on all of us. No facts, no figures, just a best guess at what they think we should have. They have treated us with contempt, ignoring most of the common sense submissions and have come up with a dog of a proposal. Amalgamation of the region does look to have a future, and may well be what we should be striving for but the proposal before us must be totally rejected by all TDC and Nelson constituents. Do not be suckered in by weasel words from those claiming to have “the facts”, there aren’t any and it has been admitted at every meeting to discuss the “Amalgamation” concept. No-one really knows what will happen other than it being a complete shambles. Errol Millar, Nelson.

Three classrooms got the opening they deserved last Friday night – with a barbeque and plenty of party food. Birchwood School opened its three renovated classrooms with a party and invited all the school’s families to come and celebrate with them. The $300,000 upgrade is the first major upgrade since the school was built 30 years ago and principal Chris Herrick says it is more suited to modern learning. “It is very exciting for the school, we were allocated money from the Ministry of Education and we decided to do the junior classes first because they are the foundation of the school.” As always, the money from the

One Council or Two?
March 2012 Dear Nelsonian Many people have asked my view on merging the Nelson and Tasman Councils. It is the biggest decision our community has faced in decades. This newsletter sets out why I, having been MP for Nelson and Tasman over the past 20 years, believe a single council will make for a better future for our region. We need to end the silly parochialism between the Nelson and Tasman councils that gets in the way of sensible decisions on water, transport, town planning, community facilities and infrastructure. Town needs country and country needs town. Thousands of people live in one local authority area and work in the other. We share the same heritage, as evidenced by Nelson Anniversary Day, and admire the same heroes like Lord Ernest Rutherford and Dame Suzie Moncrieff. When it comes to our sports, education, the arts, business and our primary industries, we organise ourselves around one region. It makes no sense to divide ourselves when it comes to local government. The big question for electors over the merger will be what it will do to rates bills. Rates follow costs. Staff numbers at the Tasman Council have grown by 35% over the past six years while population growth has been 5.7%. Similarly in Nelson, staff numbers have increased by 30% while population has increased 4.8%. Council debt and rates have also grown hugely. We cannot afford more of the same. It is not that a merged council will reduce rates, but rather deliver lower rate increases. The newly merged Auckland Council reduced its administrative staff by 2000 and saved $140 million in its first year without any reduction in services or infrastructure investment. The savings are not just in direct rates costs but also in compliance costs for households and businesses. There are numerous unnecessary differences in regulations between the two councils that just add costs for homeowners and businesses. A single council and consistent regulation will make our region more efficient and competitive. I get so frustrated when advocating for the region in Wellington that one council says one thing, the other says something different and we miss out. This contest for our fair share of Government resources is going to get much harder now Auckland is united with one council covering 1.4 million people. Currently Nelson and Tasman are 22nd and 20th in size, but united we will be the 8th largest of anywhere in New Zealand. A single council is also an opportunity to get rid of silly anomalies. It is bizarre that people living in Daelyn Drive, Richmond, get all their services from the Tasman District Council but live and pay their rates in Nelson. I have heard of people registering their dog in one district when they actually live in the other because of the different dog rules and costs. Nor does it make sense that the two areas operate completely different recycling regimes. There are endless examples of these anomalies which cause public confusion, inconvenience and cost.

I am urging residents to back the Local Government Commission and to vote for a single council. I do so because I want the region to grow, prosper and do better.
Yours sincerely

• This week saw four container ships including a 202m one, a tanker, a ship with fertiliser, the regular cement ship, the dredge come off the slipway and sail for home, a general carrier of bulk and containers, a tuna boat head to Lyttleton dry dock, a fruit ship depart with apples, and fifteen larger fishing boats, along with several smaller ones moving around the port. • It does amuse me in this usually benign climate of Nelson that when the rest of the country is getting gale warnings and rain warnings, a paddle boarder can be just seen heading off Tahunanui beach into the impending gloomy weather. No lifejacket, no radio, no flares – no sense. • This week also saw some great yacht racing in shifty wind conditions, a successful sea swim relay, and some great kite boarding at Tahunanui beach. It is always good to see those guys having a great sail and managing to stay out of the reserved area for swimmers. Many thanks. • Daylight saving finishes April 1 so please ensure you have the proper lights and warm clothing on board your boats. If in doubt – don’t go out. Sales and technical team Dave Wastney
Dave has been the Sales Manager at U-Save for the past three years, and there’s nothing that he doesn’t know about tyres. After clocking up more than twenty-five years in the industry, he is a familiar face around town as well as on the shop floor. Dave loves the fact that they are an independent company as he feels they can offer better advice and variety to clients without bias. Previously from Tyreworld, Dave explains that he loves meeting different people and his number one priority is to ‘make sure customers get the best possible service and advice.’
Dan Barker
Dan came to U-Save after many years of experience at Firestone and now shares his knowledge as Sales /Foreman in charge of the workshop team as well as being involved in sales. These responsibilities include keeping the workshop in tip top shape, monitoring stock and making sure the team keep up with jobs while attending to customer’s needs. He loves the Nelson lifestyle and feels that brings with it the philosophy of taking time to chat which he values being able to do while helping clients select the best possible tyres for their particular vehicle.
Tim Emsley
Young and with a distinctive hairstyle recognised by many around town, Tim has an impressive amount of experience for his age. He previously worked for Beaurepaires for seven years, including as Manager for three of them. He says he is the ‘everything man’ able to do any job to do with tyres and sales. He loves the fact that U-Save is an independent operator as there is no getting bogged down by corporate bureaucracy, he can talk face to face with John as the decision maker and offer personalized service to customers and a lot more in product range.
Ben Erickson
Ben is U-Saves specialist Wheel Alignment Technician. Previously from Tyreworld and now with plenty of U-Save training, he knows what’s needed to align wheels so they wear evenly, are safe and handle well on our roads. By using a specialist computer he takes the guess work out of one of the most ‘Important’ aspects of making new tyres ready for the road. Ben loves working in the six year old purpose built workshop, which is clean, well lit and has all the latest equipment. He really enjoys the ‘team’ atmosphere at U-Save and feels appreciated by his fellow workmates and his boss.

Greenacres When is the best time to fertilise your lawn? The only real rule is not to fertilise during winter or after the first frosts. Now is the best time while the grass is in a good active growing phase and it will encourage good root production over the winter period. With granular fertiliser make sure rain is on the way, or water in well, otherwise the grass can get burnt off. When is the best time to do your pruning? As a rule the best time to prune fruit trees is in late Autumn or early winter as the plants become dormant. Try to avoid pruning through a period of harsh frosts as this can damage the plants. For shrubs, roses and citrus the best time to prune is in late win-
ter or at the beginning of spring as this will encourage new growth and give a better structure to the plant. Have you got any tips that average gardener may not know? An upturned clay pot makes an excellent snail and slug trap in your garden. Lime in the cement of old used brick can harm certain plants. Over crowded plants are more susceptible to insect damage and disease. Trees have a strong and a weak side. The stronger side will have larger roots and should be planted facing the prevailing winds. What sets Green Acres apart from the others? “Fully trained, security checked operators that use professional gear to provide you the best service we can.”

Blokes enjoy 'day out' Despite competing with a broken toe Nigel Burgess pushed through the pain barrier and led from start to finish, winning the Port Nelson Blokes Day Out triathlon. The majority of participants were there to “have a bit of fun” and challenge themselves or a mate over the 3km Walk or 5km Run, 14km cycle and 120 metre swim. Although for the elite competitors it was a chance to win “bragging rights” for another year. Jonathan Linyard and Richard Ussher were the most recent winners but Nigel, who won the event in 2009, set a swift pace from the outset to lead by 30 seconds after the run. The hobbled champion then maintained his lead over the next two disciplines, back up the Maitai Valley on the bike and over the four lengths of Riverside Pool.
Ed Rimmer broke from the chasing pack to finish second, while Jonathan, a five time winner, finished in third ahead of Alan Bryson and Frankie Kersten. After a miserable Saturday night, Sunday morning dawned bright and clear as competitors lined up for a 9am start. Ordinary men were joined on the line by ‘The Boy Wonder’ Sean Tremlett who raised $200 for Ronald McDonald House in the Cheer up your Charity costume run. In the walking section, Ross Mitchell, winner of last weekend’s Kaiteriteri Gold 10km, continued his good form. Father and son, Charlie and Hayden Squance (run) and Ryan and Paul Morris (walk) are the new Nelson Bays Insurance Brokers Generation Challenge winners.

The defending champion Stoke Cobras controlled possession to get the better of Wanderers in the first Bin Inn Cup rugby league match of the year on Saturday, 32-10. The Wairau Taniwha made the trip from Marlborough worthwhile as they beat the Victory Vikings 3426. The valiant Vikings did well considering they had only 10 players at the start of the game. The

match was eventually called off as injuries depleted the Vikings’ numbers further. But it was the performance of the Richmond Rabbits that turned the most heads. In their first ever match, the newcomers were organised and disciplined. They looked sharp as the bolted past last years runners up the Tahuna Tigers, 4816.

Jordan holds 400m title
IN BRIEF BOWLS: Val Smith gave the Nelson women their first bowls inter-centre championship in ten years, after winning the last singles game of the tournament in Auckland on the weekend. With Nelson’s fours team losing to Southland, Val needed to beat Wellington’s Clare McCaul to ensure her team held off the challenge. Val did exactly that, winning 2522 to put Nelson over the line by one match. Nelson won the men’s event in Wellington last year but their women’s side hadn’t tasted victory for nearly a decade. FOOTBALL: AMI Nelson Suburbs got its season off to the best possible start on Saturday, beating Western 3-1 at Saxton Field. The game was the first for the side in its Mainland Premier League. Brandon Kay, Gagame Feni and Wesley Olea were the goal scorers. RUGBY: Nayland College First XV had a pre-season hit-out against a solid squad of old boys on Friday night. Although the older guys had a few more kegs in the pack and some “razzle-dazzle” in the backline, the college boys held their own. Nayland was outscored but built pressure and scored three well-structured tries. The set piece was a highlight for Nayland with the lineout a real strength. Coach Ant Holder told the boys after the match “don’t worry about the tries they scored because they were throwing it round playing that razzle-dazzle fluff.” Ant might have been a bit pleased with that term as he packed down at No.8 for the old boys.
FC Nelson showed why it will be a force in the Nelson Bays Football first division this year, putting the sword to a Blenheim selection on Saturday in tough condidtions at Trafalgar Park. FC Nelson won the match 5-2 and used the opportunity to give the clubs new youth development officer Henry Fa’arodo a run. Henry is currently playing in the National League for Team Wellington.
