Voters get to have their say The race is on and those on either side are finding their voice in the build-up to the referendum on the amalgamation of Nelson City and Tasman District Councils. This week the lobby group 1 Council has released a list of those supporting a merger of the two councils and it stretches into three figures. On the anti-side, the Tasman-based group Your Community, Your Choice has released video footage of three TDC councillors voicing their disapproval of the plan and why. But the final decision comes down to voters in both Nelson and Tasman and this week they will get their turn to have a say on the proposal by the Local Government Commission that was released in January this year. The proponents are confident of a good result with local politicians, artists, business owners and teach-

ers publicly saying they support a merger of the two councils. Former Nelson mayor and Tasman winery owner Philip Woollaston is urging people to vote for the proposal. “Despite promised government reforms I believe this is the best chance to bring our councils together. As the region recovers from last year’s flooding, protects its assets with earthquake strengthening, and continues to face economic pressures – there is no better time to come together and work together.” Representative of electors Aldo Miccio is also confident that there will be a yes vote. “The crucial thing is for people to cast their vote. For change to happen, the people of the region have to make it happen by voting.” Voting opens this Friday and closes April 21.

School yard fire sale From desks to a dishwasher, from chairs to concrete pavers. Nayland College is preparing to get rid of it all in its first ever auction. The school is getting rid of all its disused items with money raised going to the school’s PTA. Deputy principal Richard Wilkins says it’s a great opportunity for buyers.

“We are hoping that our old stuff can be of use to people in the community. There is no reserve on anything, we want it all sold.” It is the first time the school has held such an auction and Richard says the need to keep raising money and a shed full of quality equipment was behind the decision. “There’s so much good stuff that it

would have been a waste to just take it to the dump so we are hoping it will go to some good homes.” The auction starts at 9.30am this Sunday, April 1. Sponsorship from Pomeroys means fresh coffee and a sausage sizzle will also keep punters happy while they wait for their auction item. The auction is being held at Nayland College.
