Visitor numbers to Nelson have been increasing all month but certainly peaked on Tuesday and Wednesday last week as figures from the Nelson i-Site showed a 140 percent increase in people through the door from the first week of September. Although manager Selena Murray says it
appears most visitors are only staying for a couple of days after the games. While the impact on hospitality and rental car firms has been good, retailers are reporting that the influx of visitors has made an impact, but not significantly dollar-wise. However, a common sentiment amongst retailers spoken to by the Nelson Weekly say the benefits from the cup may not just have a monetary value. “The atmosphere in the city, it’s probably one of the best feelings I have experienced in the city full stop,” says Michael.

USA target Italians in RWC swansong Jonathan McKeown The Italian team are in for a mighty challenge as Eagles’ coach Eddie O’Sullivan revealed they had always targeted tonight’s game as a big one. It is a dangerous situation for Italy as the Americans know this is their last game in the tournament and will throw everything they have left at “Gli Azzuri”. Strong defence and structured performances has been a trademark for the Eagles in 2011. After beating Russia and restricting Ireland to a 12 point victory, the USA rotated their squad, changing 14 players in their heavy defeat to the Wallabies. With just three days off in between matches the changes were almost a necessity, but as the top XV were named to play there was an expectation that the USA would put in a performance to be proud of. Their talismanic leader Todd Clever returns, the North American rugby player of the decade ran around for North Habour in 2006. Veteran prop Mike MacDonald appears in his 11th World Cup match, a record for his country. Highlanders’ flyer James Paterson will return to the ground that holds fond memories of an up-
set win over the Crusaders, while on the other wing waits Takudzwa Ngwenya, who famously stood-up Brian Habana and beat him for pace to score one of the best tries at the 2007 World Cup. Meanwhile Italy still hope to make the quarterfinals, to achieve this they will need a bonus point win and even then it will come down to their last pool game against Ireland on Sunday. That’s where Nick Mallett faces major dilemma, he will want to rest stars like Martin Castrogiovanni and in-form loose-forward Sergio Parisse, but if it is still close after an hour, he may have to rethink that strategy. Italy and the USA have met on two previous occasions, at the 1991 world cup, Italy won by 21 points and in 2004 the margin was reduced to 18 points. This will be a much tighter match than the Russian game, but expect Italy’s class to prevail through experience and scrum dominance. There is however an outside chance that the USA could take this to the wire. If Clever can hassle Parisse and MacDonald gains any form of parity with Castrogiovanni the USA could leave a lasting impact on Nelson, the Italians and the shape of the play-offs.

Locals get into 7’s action International stars and up-and-coming local talent highlighted the Tasman Invitational Sevens Tournament as the Turf Buccaneers took home the win and the USA Eagles made a cameo on the sidelines. The tournament was the first of the three days of Rugby World Cup activities happening in Tasman as part of the Richmond Festival. The Buccaneers, featuring Crusaders fullback Tom Marshall, Tasman Makos captain Andrew Goodman and New Zealand Sevens international Shane Christie, came from three tries down to take the final 38-26 over the Wolf Pack, from the Marist club. All the usual Nelson stars; Kim Bateman,
Loui Harvey, Mitchell Scott and Willis Scott also made heavy contributions in the win. Tournament organiser and former US international Anthony Holder says the skill level in all grades was fantastic. “Everyone should be proud of the way they played,” he says. “It’s great for the spectators to come out and see guys that are on the national and international stage playing in a Sevens tournament in Richmond.” Wanderers claimed the B Grade title, while Nelson College cruised to victory in the Under-18 grade and Blenheim club Toa Whenua Ki Wairau were victors in the Under-13s. All-in-all 23 teams took part on the day.

The makeup of school groups visiting Nelson’s Suter Art Gallery has undergone a sudden transformation, but the reason for the increase in dads and granddads coming along as parent helpers, isn’t that mysterious. “As staff we have been chuckling about it,” says gallery director Julie Catchpole, who credits ‘The Match: Portraits of New Zealand Rugby Players’ with attracting ‘good old Kiwi blokes’ to the gallery. “I can’t recall when we have had such an explicit sports theme before,” says Julie. But she does know the it has been very busy with school groups. The majority have been taking their classes in the rugby room learning about sportsmanship as well as making their own art. “People can relate to the photos because almost everyone has been to a game and know what the athletes must be feeling when they leave the field, for better or worse. “A lot of the guys depicted are at their most unglamorous moment,” says Julie, referring to the collection by British photographer, David Matches. The range captures a snapshot of New Zealand rugby from All Blacks to rural club players and you can certainly see the difference between Dan Carter and those that only play rugby on the weekends. The portraits are only one third of the current exhibition carefully chosen for the overarching occasion of Rugby World Cup. Also featuring is Italian sculptor Chiara Corbelletto, so there is a “link” for the strong Italian community in Nelson and the team we are hosting. The last feature draws from the Nelson region itself. Nelson is known for its “most fabulous scenery, when you’re not watching rugby” Julie jokes. And as the Suter has New Zealand’s biggest John Gully collection “it is something unique and special we have to offer”. Gully, a surveyor and one time teacher at Nelson College, depicts landscapes in Nelson and the West Coast. ‘Site Rescene’ was selected to showcase our local artists, who chose a Gully work and used it for inspiration 100-andsomething years later. Not that a landscape is any use if you can’t put up a pair of posts and play rugby on it.

Future green for Nelson Fifty years from now Nelson will be a very green place, clinging proudly to its 49 year title of New Zealand’s solar capital. At least that’s the plan. Nelson City Council has released a draft of its “vision” for the city, a blueprint for guiding the region to a more sustainable future, and it is now hoping for public input on the document. The vision has been based on the input of hundreds of Nelsonians through a range of community, school, business and mayoral taskforce workshops. With it now drafted, mayor Aldo Miccio says council needs to hear if people agree with this vision for Nelson in 2060. “I encourage everyone to read it and tell us if it sounds like the kind of place you, your friends and your family would want to live in 50 years time.” Among the key points in the vision is a drop in dependence on fossil fuels for transport, well designed housing built around community gardens
and a vibrant central city with quality open spaces. But it will not just be transport and housing that takes its sustainably seriously, businesses will be at the forefront of the industry, hopes council. “Nelson 2060 has developed strengths in the fields of research into, and the marketing of, renewable energy technologies. Nelson’s businesses understand and actively pursue business models built on sustainable development. New food production technologies have enhanced and extended our food security. Industry sectors such as agriculture, horticulture, aquaculture and technology are benefiting from the continued upsurge in the solar economy. Cultural tourism and local retail are flourishing,” it reads. Mum behind Warrior son As captain of the Vodafone Warriors, Simon Mannering is getting support nation-wide as he prepares to lead his team in the NRL grand final this Sunday, but the most important is yet to come. Mum Wendy Mannering and her partner are jetting out to Sydney on Friday to watch her Nelson-raised son in the biggest moment of his career.
Wendy says she has been yelling and screaming at the television all season as the Warriors led their fans on a whirl-wind year, eventually ending up in the grand final. “I can’t wait, the atmosphere will be awesome, I’ll probably start crying when he comes out on the field.” The former Nelson College student won’t be short on family members at the game. His father and his

partner will also attend, as will his Sydney-based sister and Aucklandbased girlfriend. Even his older brother is attempting to get leave from the Army to attend the game. Wendy says she is proud of Simon and if he can get through the first 10 minutes she will be able to relax a bit. “That’s when they hit the hardest, after that it’s ok.”

Mayor backs ‘hug an Aussie day’ While the rest of New Zealand gives our Australian cousins a tough time during the Rugby World Cup, Nelson is preparing to show the love. Nelson mayor Aldo Miccio yesterday urged Nelson to get behind ‘hug an Aussie day’, to be held Wednesday (tomorrow). The Australian team arrive in Nelson tomorrow ahead of their pool C clash against Russia at Trafalgar Park this Saturday. The arrival is expected to be accompanied by several thousand Wallaby fans. “We want to send a clear message that we don’t hate Australians, we love them, although we will most likely support Russia. But we do want them to feel welcome in our
town,” says Aldo. Aldo decided to launch the idea to help Nelson in its quest to be the country’s best host. He says being married to an Australian and with two Australian-born children he is in a good position to help our Aussie neighbours have a good time. “I think it’s great if we can give our Anzac brothers and sisters a big welcome.” This week is the biggest for Nelson during the cup, with two games in the city in five days, featuring four different countries, Russia, Italy, United States and Australia. So if you see someone dressed like a lemon tomorrow give ‘em a hug, says Aldo. “Let’s give them the best experience they’ve ever had.”

Season sails into action The Tasman Bay Cruising Club started its new season on Sunday with a bang – quite literally. The club welcomed MP Maryan Street to officially open the season, with a miniature cannon even wheeled in for the occasion. Its boom, loud for its size, got the season underway for the club over a spectacular Nelson Marina. Club commodore Dr Phil Silva says there was a great atmosphere amongst the club leading up to the day, with a packed calendar awaiting its members. “We take our racing very seriously in the club so our members were excited in anticipation for the season.” With a membership of 300-plus, the club caters for most yacht and launch owners and next year will celebrate 25 years. Club member Kevin Skelton says Wednesday night racing is a stable for the club and anyone wanting to give sailing a go

That doesn’t matter, good social skills is more important than sailing ability.” It does come with a warning from Phil though: “You do have to be careful because it’s highly addictive.” Maryan was invited to sail on one of the boats on opening day and says she is hooked. “I couldn’t imagine living somewhere where I wasn’t surrounded by water. But I don’t know anything about anything when it comes to sailing, however, it was just spectacular. I did what I was told but mainly just enjoyed being out on Tasman Bay. I thoroughly enjoyed it.” Rob Greenwood in Wild Oats won the race.

Last week, APNZ editor Chris Reed approached Nelson Weekly and its sister paper Waimea Weekly, both locally-owned, about supplying stories from the top-of-the-south to its new news service. The photographs and articles will then be available for other newspapers to pick up and run. APNZ is helping fill the gap left by the closure of NZPA, a significant source of news and photos to New Zealand media for more than 130 years. It delivers a package of news, sport, business and lifestyle content to APN New Zealand’s 52 daily, Sunday and community newspapers and nzherald.co.nz. It also services independent partners, including the Otago Daily Times, Gisborne Herald, Ashburton Guardian and the Greymouth Evening Star. Eight months in the Navy and only once has Nelson man Ryan Brewerton had to reach for the sea-sickness pills. Even that couldn’t put him in a downer about his new job. “I love being in the Navy, the challenges, every day is a new challenge and every day you learn something new.” Ryan was back home this week after his ship HMNZS Rotoiti docked at Port Nelson on Friday. The Midshipman was greeted by a proud family and for just the second time since he enrolled, he’s been able to sleep in his own bed again. Father Mark says he is happy to see his son home, even if only for a few days. “As a par-
ent all you can do is teach them honesty and respect and guide them in the right direction. I’m very proud with the decisions he’s made and what he’s doing.” The visit has also given his family a much clearer idea of his day-to-day life. “When you talk to him on the phone he says where he is and what he’s doing but now we can actually see where that is, it’s good to piece it together,” says Mark. Ryan says being in the Navy has tested him, pushing his boundary’s but he’s happy with his career choice. “I really enjoy this environment and what I’m learning, it’s exciting and hopefully one day I’ll be in charge of one of these [ships].”

Men’s Shed up and running
The men of Nelson have finally got their shed. Eighteen months after an initial plan, Men’s Shed Waimea Inc was officially opened on Sunday, and its chairman Jim Davies says it was exciting to finally get in the workshop with its 70 members all chomping at the bit to get going. “It’s an absolutely fantastic feeling after sort of just over 18 months of hard work, fundraising, trying to find an actual place to put the shed, it’s finally here,” says Jim. Men’s Shed is a workshop for men in Nelson who have a passion for building, creating and working in a social environment, but may have been forced to downsize their home or live without a shed. Jim says it will allow them to do something productive and specifically for themselves. “It stops isolation, particularly for older men. They’re that older generation where their wives did everything for them and if their wife predeceases them, they’re lost.” The ‘shed’ is situated in the former Nelson District Kennel Club rooms at Richmond Park. And the bloke’s first task was turning the beaten down building in to a place they can now happily call their work space. Is the planned Stoke skatepark about to pull a pressure-flip? In mid-August the council announced that the Greenmeadows site, on the corner of Main Rd Stoke and Songer St, had been chosen out of the 11 sites initially investigated for a skatepark in Stoke. But following this decision some concerned members of the public started a petition to have the site moved. Nelson City Councillor Pete Rainey says consultation with residents has “highlighted some concerns” and the council is conscious of the issues raised by residents that live nearby. These include noise, road safety and care for elderly. Now, the Nelson Youth Council has moved to address some of the concerns. The youth council says the need for youth facilities in Stoke is “not new”,
with sites dedicated to both children and older residents, the youth of Stoke are somewhat disenfranchised. “The site is highly visible, thereby making it safer,” it says. When you consider the openness of the area and its proximity to the Stoke Police Station, it seems that deterring illicit behaviour was high on the agenda. Nelson Youth Council says it would like those who have expressed their concerns to “accept that there is a real need for a skate park in Stoke and that Greenmeadows is the best site.” Pete says he would challenge residents who have concerns to come up with some “clear rationale” as to why the skatepark should not be there and to come up with some “creative alternatives” to look after the youth of Stoke.

School pool target filling up Tahunanui School is bucking a national trend and it’s getting plenty of support in its quest. The school is currently installing its new, custom made Italian swimming pool. At the same time many other primary schools around the country are pulling their’s out. Principal Paul Drummond says the investment is essential and he’s rapt the community has supported it. “It’s a priority for our school to teach students to swim, due to our location it’s a life skill, a necessity.” Parents and supporters of the school have raised $350,000 towards the pool and last week the Canterbury Community Trust came to the party with a donation of $80,000. Brownies take on new hobby
Honest Lawyer owner Chris Baillie has been left unable to make a move on his giant chess set, but it’s not because he is in checkmate, it’s due to a rather dishonest thief. Chris noticed last Sunday that a knight was missing from the giant set he and fellow owner Darryn Eves made several months ago. The former police officer says he was disappointed someone would steal a piece, as plenty of patrons have found the game a bit of fun and he is now offering a reward for anyone who knows anything about it. “It’s really annoying, now the game is unplayable, I half expected it to be a bit of a joke and find it back a day or two later but that hasn’t happened.” Chris, who paid several thousand for the set, is offering a reward for anyone that has information about it, you can call him on 547 4070.
Forget asking the oldest members of your family to knit you a new scarf, perhaps try some of the youngest. The 23 girls of Stoke Brownies have been learning how to knit, earning a badge, but more importantly, their place in the world, says leader Belinda Roselli. “Being a worldwide organisation the concept of a global village is one close to us so we thought this was a good idea.” The girls have been knitting peggy squares to make blankets as part of Operation Cover Up, sending kiwi-made blankets to Moldova, in eastern Europe. Belinda says the girls have learned about persistence during the project, with many getting help from grandparents, elderly neighbours and aunties’ to help knit their squares. “It’s been great going into the community and engaging people to help us out,” she says. Exchange leads to new ‘daughter’ When Suzy Wanklyn met her latest international student, she says she was also meeting her new “daughter”. Suzy, who works for AFS in Nelson, has welcomed Costa Rican student Monica Gonzalez in to her home and says it’s great to have another girl around the house, along with her 16 yearold daughter Saskia. Suzy first applied for the job with AFS after her son Nick had done an exchange himself in France. Ever since she has had a first hand experience of how it works, Suzy has gone on to host three international students, with Monica being the latest. Suzy says creating relationships with families all over the world is the biggest drawcard about hosting an international student, as well as learning about a different culture. “From Saskia’s point of view, she’s now got a sister,” says Suzy. “It’s just meeting someone different and new, and it’s a different experience. It’s a challenge but it’s really fun.” Suzy has stayed in contact with all her past international students and has even gone over to stay with their families in France, and hopes to do the same with Monica. But for Monica, she didn’t even know New Zea-
land existed before applying for an overseas exchange. “I wanted to go to Australia first. I started finding out things about it and I thought it was very interesting,” says the 18 year-old. Monica had already finished school in Costa Rica, but says it was the best opportunity to meet new people during a gap year in combination with exploring the world. “It’s also interesting learning how school works here. It’s way different. Costa Rica is a third-world country and is so small compared to New Zealand, even though it’s the same population.” English is important in applying for jobs in Costa Rica, despite the official language being Spanish, and she says that was part of the reason for coming to this side of the world. Monica studies outdoor education at Nayland College, which has given her a first hand experience at the adventure sports of New Zealand and a taste of our national parks. She has been in Nelson for eight months and hopes to go bungy jumping in Queenstown before she leaves in four months time. “I just want to learn more about the culture and just enjoy my time here with the friends I have met.” To find out more information about hosting an international student, phone Suzy on 547 7845.

The Nelson Region Hospice recieves huge community support and would struggle to provide the range and number of quality services it offers without the help of volunteers, fundraisers, donations and bequests. The Nelson Region Hospice wishes to thank people for the local community support it receives along with the volunteers and charities that are involved with ensuring their service in the community continues. Project Manager Hamish Kennedy says without the help of charitable organisations and pub charities the Hospice wouldn’t exist as it is. “The ongoing support from these trusts allows us to stay in business, and it is one of our most valuable sources of income.” Last week the Hospice officially opened its newly completed main entrance and refurbished clinical room which was able to go ahead because of the support from these charities. Events such as last week’s Tug of Peace, the upcoming Infashion Fashion Show and a country music concert, raise funds, but they also provide opportunities for the community to support each other and remember loved ones who have passed on. “Our event organisers do such a great job. Many come to us with new ideas, and I can’t thank them enough,” says Hamish. The Nelson Region Hospice provides a range of programmes and services to meet the needs of terminally ill patients and their families. Social workers, bereavement support coordinators and councillors are able to guide terminally ill patients through their difficult journey. Care is provided 24 hours a day, seven-days-aweek, either at the hospice or at the patient’s own home where the team works to ensure patients are sup-

ported by their care co-ordinator. The Hospice unit offers a calm and caring place for families to share quality time. Families are welcome to stay overnight. There are ensuite bedrooms available if patients need assistance with symptom control, relative relief and end stage care. Hospice Shops are run by a willing band of volunteers who are involved with a range of jobs from collection of items for the shop, sorting items and serving in the shops. Extra pairs of hands are always welcome. Hamish says that the Nelson Hospice goal is to care always, “We are there to ensure that all people in our community have access to high quality compassionate palliative care and to assist patients to make the most of life that remains while providing support and care for the family during the patient’s illness and in bereavement.”

New coaches at Suburbs Cary Hamson, Joe Green and Ben Wright take charge
Phillip Rollo Joe Green, Cary Hamson and Ben Wright will be taking control of the coaching reigns at Nelson Suburbs next year, with the latter also forming a mouth-watering combination with Waitakere United striker Gagame Feni on the pitch. Joe, a former Richmond Athletic captain, Ben, and Cary, who was involved in the coaching staff at Richmond for 13 years, were officially announced by club president Jason Lavington this week and take over the role formerly vacated by John Slotemaker and Paul Brydon. Ben played professionally in England and Norway up until 2010 and his career is highlighted by a goal at Stamford Bridge against Chelsea in the UEFA Cup with Viking FK. Ben is likely to play a key role up front for the Robbie’s Premier League runners-up, as well as in a coaching role, while Joe is also planning on lacing up the boots for a game or two. Joe and Ben will both operate in a paid
director of football role at the club, coaching at all levels in the club and in regional talent centres with Nelson Bays Football. Ben has turned down coaching roles with FC Nelson and Richmond Athletic for the job. King’s Lynn left winger Jordan Yong will return to Nelson in May to link up with Suburbs and is the perfect replacement for the departed Adam Smith. Sam Mason-Smith, another former Richmond player, currently weighing up Canterbury United or Team Wellington’s ASB Premiership squads, is also likely to jump ship if he returns to the region. Outstanding goal keeper Eddie Newman and New Zealand Under-20 goal keeper Coey Turipa have both shown interest in returning as well, says president Jason Lavington. It is believed that Coey will also come in to the club as a goal keeping mentor for junior players. But that’s where the importing stops. Although it appears the door is open to anyone wanting to join the club Joe says they are more excited about the oppor-
tunity to work with some of the young talent coming through and keeping the strong ties with Nayland College. “The primary focus for me is just to make sure everyone at the club has an opportunity to improve as footballers, develop as individuals, be good role models for the club, and most importantly enjoy playing and being part of the club.” Cary gave credit to John’s previous focus on developing young players and hopes the trio can carry that on. Joe says one of the first steps in doing that is retaining center-back Matthew Ayloff - one of the more experienced players at the club. “I believe he is a very good player and can really help pass on some good information to the younger players.” But the combination of Ben and Gagame is likely to be the sky-blue’s key strike weapon and will cause many headaches for defences, and Joe believes Ben can help push Gagame to the next level. Jason says the club is keen for Paul to stay on coaching within the club, likely to be at first division level.

Eagles had a mixture of experience and youth within their ranks and although they only won one from five games it was a worthwhile hit out for the coming season.
The Nelson Softball Association has in the past fielded extremely competitive teams at age group level and several boys teams and individuals have gained recognition. The one area softball in general is looking to lift is the participation of female players. Softball New Zealand has implemented the Pink Zone which provides a programme and pink gear to encourage 9 – 12 year olds in
particular. There are only three clubs – Stoke Eagles, Royals and United which all compete at senior level. Although not having youth

teams affiliated to the club, all three clubs have youth grade teams that they “look after”. Nelson Softball CEO Derryn French runs the “Softball in Schools” programme and would be the best person to contact to get information on clubs / teams in any given area. Derryn can be contacted at 027 626 7727. The youth programme is played on Saturday mornings and players are welcomed from age four. There are a number of leagues played with the peanut league for the youngest. There is no uniform and no teams – it’s a matter of turning up and learning the skills to take into a game. The older leagues have teams and uniforms.

Speedway drivers blow out cobwebs The region’s speedway drivers blew out a winter’sworth of dust and cobwebs on Saturday’s at the season’s first practice session. The Tahuna Beach Holiday Park Speedway is one of the highlights of the summer sport calendar with thousands packing out the track in Appleby each met. Rai Valley kicks on with rugby tradition Lawry Shaw Students at Rai Valley Area School are now enjoying new rugby posts thanks to the generosity of community members. The posts were put up last week and a special ceremony was held to celebrate the official opening of the posts and new rugby field. The school, which presently has a number of local and national representative players, had a rugby field and posts many years ago, but the posts were taken down and not replaced. Staff thought it was the perfect time to install new posts with the Rugby World Cup under way. A team effort helped to source some suitable wood from the local community. School caretaker Joe Bloomfield cut and painted the gifted
wood at the school’s Technology Block and installed them. Tasman Makos players and former Rai Valley Area School pupils Andrew Goodman, Sam Prattley and Kahu Marfell helped to officially open the use of the posts and take the students through rugby drills and kicks last Thursday. Andrew spoke with fondness about his early rugby days at Rai and donated four new rugby balls to the school for students to use. Both staff and students alike were excited to have the new posts put up and were grateful for the support of local people to make it a reality. To coincide with the Rugby World Cup, the school has also just started flying its newly purchased New Zealand flag, which can be seen as you pass the school on the Main Road.

The bowling season at Ngawhtu Bowling Club opened on Saturday but not before a few revelations. Doug, a Life member of the club and bowler of forty odd years, was presented as the new Patron of Bowls Nelson to his surprise. The Ngawhtu club’s ‘Have a Go’ day will be held on Sunday October 9 from 11am-2pm, so if you are keen to try out the sport “just come along and we’ll handle the rest,” says John. The Nelson team of Sarah McGovern, Kim Starnes and Imogen Smith (above) won the fifth annual Spring Challenge, near Blenheim on Saturday. An all-women’s adventure race, the Spring Challenge was created by Jodie and Nathan Fa’avae and is the biggest event of its kind in the world. First held in Hanmer Springs in 2007, it has been held in a different location in the South Island each year. The race tests four disciplines; mountain biking, hiking, rafting and navigation. The cost is $4 (from Richmond) and $3 (from Stoke) each way and advance tickets can be bought at Nelson City Council in Trafalgar Street. The Late Late Bus service will be 5 two Tuesday nights running on the and extra Late Late buses will run on the Saturday night. • Accessible parking for those with Wheelchair Tickets is available in ho r el i n e 0's S 18 4 limited Paru Paru Road and some PIONEERS PARK mobility parks will be available in Grove Street. (Contact Council to book these in advance). • A golf cart service will be available for spectators with limited mobility from Grove Street to the gates.

• Please allow plenty of time to get to Trafalgar Park and find your seat once you arrive. It will take longer to get into the stadium than usual. • Spectator parking will be available in Wakatu, Montgomery and Buxton Squares, at Neale Park (not available if we’ve had heavy rain) and at Akersten Street. • Grove Street is the designated Taxi/ Shuttle bus drop off point. • There are private vehicles drop off areas on Collingwood Street north of Elliot Street and on Halifax Street outside the Library. • Jump on a bus - for the Tuesday games Buses will run from Richmond to Nelson via Waimea Rd and from Stoke to Nelson via Tahunanui every 15 minutes between 5.15 pm and 6.15pm. For the Saturday game the bus service will run between 1.15pm

Re-enactment was a massive success
Nelson turned out in force last Tuesday to celebrate the city’s rugby history, with thousands turning out for the Nelson College haka and following reenactment rugby game. The game, played at the Botanics Reserve, site of the very first game in this country, was packed with an estimated 6000 people.
