City car parks to go, this time on Vanguard St Andrew Board An apparent lack of council consultation has struck again, this time over the removal of car parks on Vanguard St without telling infuriated business-owners. A hastily-called meeting between a group of business-owners and three Nelson City Council staff members last Friday afternoon was tense as business people told staff that they would not stand by and let more car parks be taken away.

“Dozens” were removed for a remaining few on the road. “You are telling people, our turning bay in 2008, when Harvey Norman came to customers who put You are telling our customers food on our table, town say the businesses and they would not not to come here because they not to come here becan’t park anywhere let it happen again. cause they can’t park This time only two are anywhere, then when – Francis Lagrutta. proposed to go, to be they park on the footreplaced with trees as part of the Heart path you ticket them. vus Auto Glass, Francis Lagrutta. Council staff said the consultation process was over and it had every right to proceed with the “beautification”, expected to begin within the next week or ten days. This is the second time in as many weeks businesses have cried foul over the strategy, with council reversing the decision

Nelson’s coastline just got even safer thanks to a new $40,000 rescue boat. The boat, funded by New Zealand Community Trust, enables the Nelson Surf Life Saving club to continue to quickly respond to marine emergencies in the Nelson region. It replaces the club’s current rescue boat and is faster, lighter and easier to launch than its predecessor. Club president Marcus Gardner says the new boat will be a great asset and is a much needed upgrade. “It was often used to do beach patrols in the Tahunanui Beach area, rescuing kite surfers, kayakers and other water users. But, all this work has taken its toll. The boat had had several rebuilds and was on to its fourth engine. The new boat was blessed by Archdeacon Harvey Ruru and officially launched by deputy mayor Rachel Reese, last Friday. “We are a busy club, our members attend a water-related incident for every 8.8 volunteer hours we spend doing patrols, the highest rate in the country,” says Marcus. Paul Matheson, NZCT Regional Advisory Committee Chairman, said NZCT was proud to be involved in this project. “This is the good side to pokie money. There’s no doubt this new boat will be instrumental in saving lives on our rivers and along our coastline.”

Youth featherweight boxer Gage Brown has become the first fighter for many years to win a national title under the Nelson Boxing Association banner. He won the title after defeating Masoud Mohamed of Creighton Cobbers Boxing Club of Christchurch at the weekend. Gage convincingly won his bout 22-5 “using a series of technically correct, powerful punches” according to delighted Fighting Fit gym trainer Steve Mitchell. “We’ve had national champions from Nelson in recent years but this is the first time for ages we’ve had one under the Nelson association banner rather than having to compete under another province’s flag,” says Steve. A much-loved charity is set to celebrate 100 years in Nelson this week. St Vincent de Paul was founded in France close to 180 years ago by a group of university students who named their society, which aimed to help the poor, after that country’s famous Saint who dedicated his life to helping the needy. One hundred and forty years ago the voluntary organisation made it to New Zealand and a century ago to Nelson. Since arriving to the top-of-the-south St Vincent de Paul has spread and now has stores in Richmond, Motueka, Takaka, Westport, Stoke and Reefton. Area council president Lois Palmer says the society has done a lot of good in the Nelson community over the past century and she hopes it will continue for another 100 years. “I won’t be here of course,” she jokes. “It’s extremely rewarding being involved in an organisation like this, we get people come in here after we may have helped them and they just come back just to say thanks and some burst into tears. That is really nice to know that you’ve made a difference in their lives,” she says. The society is celebrating its birthday by hosting the national St Vincent de Paul AGM in Nelson this weekend. Lois says it’s taken a lot of hard work but it will be a good way to mark the occasion. “We have people coming from all over New Zealand and we’ll have a birthday cake so it should be good fun.”

Tahunanui School bucks swimming pool trend Phillip Rollo • This week Port Nelson has had 3 container ships, a car carrier, and 3 log ships call in. The cement ship the Westport also called in. • The Strait Freight ship the Monte Stello is due to make her usual call on Saturday. • There was some activity for the Harbour Master craft and search and rescue earlier in the week when it was reported a wind-surfer had been lost at sea. Fortunately he was found on the beach alive and well. What this does highlight however is for all kite and board sailors to take care in the strong winds. Your danger will put others in danger if they come looking for you. Always check the weather before you go, know your limits, if in doubt, don’t go out. Many thanks to police, search and rescue, and harbour master’s staff for a rapid and successful response. • Finally, congratulations to the Nelson Surf Life Saving club on the launch of their new rescue vessel this week. Enjoy your safe boating this week, Dave Duncan, Harbour Master/ Marine Operations Manager.

Tahunanui School is swimming against a national tide as it refuses to close its ageing swimming pool and instead rebuild it. For more than 65 years the Tahunanui School swimming pool has provided students with enjoyment, refreshment, and has helped develop life skills. But after the coming season it’s getting rebuilt, and subject to financial support, will be completed halfway through next year. “We need to upgrade. One, the pool is now over 60 years old, and it’s maintenance costs are becoming higher, it is probably too small for the size of the school for the things we want to do, and we want a pool that will serve the community wider than just the school students,” says principal Paul Drummond. Due to maintenance costs and no funding from the Ministry of Education, more and more school Tahunanui student councillior Milan Cunliffe-Post, pools around the country are beFrankie Hickman, Phoebe Fulton Buckle and Karman ing closed for good. “Some of them Mau at the existing school pool with principal Paul have become gardens. tenance, heating, and the cost of upkeep,” says Paul. But it was a no brainer when deciding to double the size of the current one. “We as a community think that’s it’s fundamental skill that all children should be able to swim confidently, not only as a life skill and a survival skill, but because it gives them access to a quality of life and recreation that would perhaps not be able to access if they didn’t have swimming skills.” Tahunanui School has raised half the required $350,000 through galas and fundraising, and they are hoping grants and sponsorship will get them across the finish line. “We are looking to tender the naming rights to the pool, so that we can put together a package for the major sponsor of the naming rights. We’re very confident because it’s something that the wider community will support. There’s no public swimming pool in our community so it would appeal to sponsorship and fundraising. “We’re doing something that will serve this community for a lot longer than 50 years,” says Paul.

Saved holiday money going to the dogs Vicki Osborn, 22, saved $10,000 in a year to get herself to Thailand, where she wanted to volunteer in an animal reserve. Then she was diagnosed with ME. “I was so gutted, but I still wanted to help in some way, I’d been talking with them for a long time and felt like I knew the place,” she says. So instead of spending her hard-earned money on clothes, a TV or a car, Vicki decided to send a container load of blankets, towels and other useful goodies to the reserve. “It’s something I’m so passionate about and I really want to help,” she says. While Vicki is shelling out for the container she is hoping other Nelsonians will help donate old blankets and towels to help fill it. “I wanted to make it really easy for people, I didn’t want to ask for money and this way they can just give me a call and leave the stuff at their letterbox, I’ll come round and pick it up,” she says. The talent quest format also allows music and drama students to be recognised by their peers. This year Drum and Drum, consisting of Thomas Bate and David Flynn, took out the title. Longest day lives up to its title Mum-friendly Nelson band picks up career pace It was billed as the longest day and students that took part in it would no doubt agree. Twenty five Nelson students endured a five hour challenge that saw them carry logs up the Cathedral steps, tyres up Walters Bluff, a stretcher to the Centre of New Zealand, a sprint challenge at the Botanics, a hose challenge at the fire station training tower and a Uni-Mog pull up Rutherford St. And that was just the start. The “longest day” was the culmination of CACTUS, a military style physical training course aimed at improving physical fitness, motivation, leadership and team work skills. Sessions include circuit training, sprints, equipment carries over an eight week period, three days a week from 5.55am to 7am, followed

by a provided breakfast. This longest day consisted of three teams of eight, plus a challenging team of eight from Nelson Cadet Unit. Instructor Vicky Carnegie says the Nelson City Council-funded course is a real thrill for the participants. “We have a range of students from Nelson College House Captains to those involved with youth justice. Students loved the course, the discipline, the challenge, the new friendships and the sense of achievement.” Students achievement was acknowledged at a presentation ceremony featuring councillor Alison McAlpine and the region’s top police officers Brian McGurk and Gary Knowles. The course was supported by Police, Nelson College, Nelson College for Girls, Youth Nelson, Big Brothers Big

Nayland Kindergarten hosts tiny wedding

Rotary presents fellowship award

It’s not often a wedding is celebrated at a kindergarden, but that’s exactly what children at Nayland Kindergarten did last Thursday. Two pupils, Logan Andrews and Elliot Schroder, tied the knot in front of fellow students. teachers and parents. The mock wedding was held with children dressing up for the occasion, ties and shirts for the boys and dresses for the girls. It was the kindergartens end of term focus so everyone has been involved with preparations. The girls have visited a wedding shop and got ideas for dresses and parents have brought in their wedding photos to help give Elliot Schroder and Logan Andrews with friends at their mock inspiration. wedding at Nayland Kindergarten last week.

Recently, Dave Marshall was presented the Paul Harris Fellowship Awarded for outstanding work in the community. This nomination came from the Rotary Club of Whakatu Nelson and was awarded by District Governor Margaret Reeve. In 1996 the Rotary Club of Whakatu Nelson was exploring the idea of establishing a “Parenting Project” which would be of benefit to children at risk between the ages of 5-12 years in the Nelson. Following initial discussions with local community groups an idea was raised for this to become a mentoring initiative and Dave Marshall

was employed in 1997 as Project Leader. The operation name of the programme at that stage was “One to One” mentoring. Learning and concept development saw a re-branding in 1998 as Big Brothers Big Sisters and the first mentor match in Nelson in July of that year. In 2003 Big Brothers Big Sister International gave Dave Marshall the mandate to lead the national development of the program. It was then that an alignment with the principles of Rotary became even more important. Today Big Brothers and Big Sisters is a nation-wide initiative that has helped over 400 young people.

AUTHORISED BY PHIL THOMPSON, 89 PRINCES DR, NELSON.

Vote Phil Thompson

for Nelson City Council. Hello, My name is Phil Thompson, Nelson City Council Candidate. When elected, I will enthusiastically support the elevation of Nelson as “the lifestyle city of New Zealand” for all residents, across all generations. To achieve this it is clear that the council needs to make some changes that will result in greater transparency, affordable rates, better representation for the elderly, safer roads, improved community parks and positive progress. You need a smart, open and visionary council with business experience and a social conscience. This is your chance to elect council representatives who will listen and bring your views to the table. It is time for a council that delivers what you want. I’m married and have two children. Since graduating with a BA (Hons) Degree in Business and Public Administration in 1991, I’ve worked in management in construction-related industries in England and throughout New Zealand. I’ve always had a great interest in local community issues and am currently an active Trustee of Nelson’s Kahurangi Employment Trust.

Your Mayor for Nelson

“Kerry Marshall is a leader with a proven track record. I want him back to finish the job he’s started.”

Murray Sturgeon

Hello, I’m Kerry Marshall, your Mayor, and I’m running for office again. Your Nelson City Council has been busting a gut for you over the past three years. You may not know that, you are busy, and Council business is often under the radar. But do not doubt our commitment for one second. Your Council has achieved much on your behalf, and we are on the cusp of so much more. Yes, a number of decisions have been tough, and divisive, but we move forward together. This city is in an enviable position - and I believe continuity is the order of the day. Vote for Kerry Marshall and in the next three years we will reap the benefit of all that hard work.

A Prosperous City

This Council has courted economic development with a passion.

This council is committed to Nelson being a cultural hub. Arts Policy. We’ve never had one. Now we do, with funding that lights the way for artistic activity, adding substance to our claim as a significant arts city. Read it. (www.ncc.govt.nz - search term: Arts Policy)

Events Fund. Council has backed a number of wonderful local events to attract visitors and for growth; MarchFest, WASA Arts Festival, Nelson School of Music WinterFest etc.

Sport is Culture. Saxton Field development continues apace.

Our commitment to cycleways pays huge dividends for anyone on two wheels. The Nelson Tennis Centre junior programme is gaining national attention...

Trafalgar Park Upgrade. The Rugby World Cup is a huge opportunity for us - and Trafalgar Park is a remarkable event resource for many years to come.

The Theatre Royal. When the Trust needed support we came

An Efficient City

An enormous amount of work has gone on to tranform your Council. One Stop Shop. We now have one integrated service centre, where you can access anything you need, on the spot. Independent Directors. No councillor can be a director of

Port Nelson, or any council owned business. We believe this leads to much better independent decisions.

Less Meetings. We have reduced the amount of committee

meetings - fewer meetings, less wasted time = better results.

Efficient Culture. We inherited a tired organisation. Keith

Nelson’s Kieran Bennett goes out on a high Andrew Board At 22, Nelson downhill mountain biker Kieran Bennett is a young man, and judging by his recent results in the United States, still on top of his game. But the former Oceania champion has just announced his retirement from international competition. “I’ve just found myself wanting to be home more and more, instead of spending most of the year overseas. I felt I was at a good point this year and riding well but I wasn’t enjoying it as much as I used to, just being away so much,” he says. Kieran has just returned from the US where he finished fourth at the Pro Gravity Tour, otherwise known as the US Nationals. This, despite suffering a broken hand just before the tour and missing the first round of the six-round competition. “I was really happy with my results, there was only one race that I didn’t do well in and considering the three guys ahead of me are all fulltime pro’s I was pretty happy.” Kieran also finished 30th in the world cup, after the US tour, but the world championships were not so kind after a

major crash ruined any chance of a top finish. “The world champs was a bit of a nightmare, there was a section on the track that caught out one of our juniors and I was speaking with him about before my race and it weighted too heavy on my mind. I was thinking about it too much when I came down and actually hit a pretty large rock and snapped my bike frame,” he says. Kieran’s best year was in 2008 when he finished 13th at world champs in Italy, won two US national rounds and the Oceania champs. Although Kieran is stepping back from international competition he says he is still keen to ride in events in New Zealand and still loves riding Nelson tracks. “I do a lot of riding around here, I think we’ve definitely got one of the best places in New Zealand, riding-wise, we have everything.” Kieran is getting married in March and is starting a sheet-metal apprenticeship next year. “I’m happy with my decision, this was my sixth year overseas and I’m ready to stay home for a bit more.”

New mountain bike track opens On Saturday morning the Nelson Mountain Bike Club Track Builders plus friends, family and mountain bikers met on Sharland’s Road to celebrate the opening of their new track, Fly Buys. The group was honoured to have mayor and mayoress Kerry and Colleen Marshall to perform the official tube cutting ceremony and cake cut-

ting duties. People then enjoyed riding the new track. The opening was the culmination of several months work by Nelson Mountain Bike Club volunteers build an easy grade 2 standard trail that can be ridden by most mountain bikers. The club is keen to see more Nelson riders involved in its volunteer activities.

The Nelson under 13 girls hockey team from back left; Olivia Lester, Brenna Ellis, Megan Hay, Katie Milne, Nicole Riley, Talya Proudfoot, Maddy Bartle, Kate Kersten and Esme Justo. Front left; Brittany Dick, Ayla Walker, Rochell Blair, Erica Bradley, Nandini Prasad, Olivia Morrison and Neave Ellis.

Hockey girls set to take on rest of NZ Nelson under 13 Girls Hockey Team will be representing Nelson at the National Collier Trophy Tournament in Timaru next week. Only four of the 16 members of this relatively young team have competed at this tournament previously and were selected from a pool of 40 players in July this year. The girls come from two Nelson Clubs, Waimai and Federal, playing in the winter Nelson Hockey women divisions two to five. Lead up games have been played against Wellington, Wairarapa, Canterbury, Marlborough, West

Coast and Buller. Eleven games were played in total with four wins, three draws and four losses. The team was successful in retaining the Boyd Trophy against Marlborough side in August. Team captain Katie Milne says, “We have been continuing to train hard since the club season finished and have played a few games against the under 13 boy’s team to toughen us up and make us a bit more aggressive. We are determined to do our very best at Collier.” There are 24 Teams attending the Nationals with start on October 3.

Nelson mayor Kerry Marshall and Fiona Bonnett cut the tube to offically open the new mountain bike track.

Mayoral candidates sweet on Saxton Field, Sport Tasman told Andrew Board Saxton Field will be the country’s top sporting facility in five years time. That’s the vision of the five mayoral candidates who attended Sport Tasman’s future of sport forum at the new $13 million Saxton Stadium last week. The candidates each spoke of their opinion on sport and its role in society and how they would like to see it evolve. Surpassed time limits earned a yellow card and a body blow from a ping-pong ball-throwing time keeper. Only Kerry Mar-

shall dared to take him on. Rachel Reese was the crowd’s favourite at the end of the night after each of the attendee’s was asked to vote on who they thought performed the best by slipping a poker chip into the box plastered with the face of their preferred candidate. She says she was thrilled to come out on top as sport is so important to the region. “Sport defines us, it’s about kiwi culture. It’s about healthy communities, entertainment, events and money – let’s not forget sport is also about money. Values you learn from sport are winning and

enjoying it, losing and not giving up. Mike Ward was also popular at the forum as the legendary Coast to Coast participant spoke about “getting off your arse and doing it with his chuckle-grabbing line: “you’re not an official until you’re a cripple. Aldo Miccio spoke of his desire to see pathways created for young people in Nelson so they can realise their dreams without their parents having to travel to all corners of the country. He also said he would like to see some artificial turfs laid to ensure sport can be played even in

the poorest of weather. But it was the question of a vision for Saxton Field that would have impressed Sport Tasman CEO and MC of the evening Nigel Muir, the most though. All five proclaimed they would continue with the plan for the ground and would like to see it finished. Kerry enthusiastically supported the future of Saxton Field and it becoming “the number one multisport facility in New Zealand. He says $58million has been spent so far on the venue and it has his support for more. Gary Watson was also for the continued upgrade of Saxton

Field but would first like to see the radio tower removed. “It needs to go and it needs to go quick. I’m passionate about sport but I’m also passionate about lives and the radiation beaming of that is not safe for our children. Rachel says the vision is there “now it’s about getting on and doing it. The event was attended by 100 people from various sporting codes and Nigel says he is glad sporting people were given the opportunity to put their questions to the next leader of the city.

Hundreds decend on Saxton Field for Jack McKnight festival Winners of the Bowater Toyota Jack McKnight football festival will be crowned today as the three event tournament reaches its climax. The annual festival involves representative teams from around the South Island from the 10th and 11th grade and is played at Saxton Field. This year more than 38 teams entered with several Nelson teams still in the hunt for titles heading into the final day. Nelson Bays Football general manager Clive

Beaumont says the three-day tournament has been running to plan. “It’s been going brilliantly, the weather had been great and the level of football has been really impressive. “It’s a proper festival this one, politics don’t seem to come into it at this age which is refreshing and it’s nice to see the players get on with the game. Prize giving is due to be held Tuesday afternoon after the 11th grade boys final.

Nelson’s golden oldies take on world Nelson’s golden oldies rugby team is in Sydney competing in the 18th Golden Oldies World Rugby Festival. The Buccaneers flew out of Nelson last Saturday for the

week-long tournament where it will play three games. More than 130 teams from around the world are registered to compete, including a Sydney team featuring ARU CEO John

O’Neill. Golden oldies rugby is for people 35 and over, with most of the Buccaneers in their “mid fifties” and admit more of their skills will be off the field socialising.

As an Architectural designer Dave Mcleod saw an opportunity to begin a new type of volume home building company, one that took the benefits of both the current volume home build process and combined it with the process of independent design and independent builders. “When a client starts the process of designing a new home with us, we make it clear to them that THEY own the plans to their home. In other cases they can wind up leaving a home building process halfway through with nothing, because despite paying they still don’t own anything. We don’t work like that however, when we design a home for our clients, even the plans are theirs and they can even choose their builder from the group of our accredited builders which in Nelson are Fitzgerald Construction, Architekton, Kidson Construction, Hoad and Jaquirey and Tasman Homes.” Once the plans are completed and you have chosen which builders you would like to deal with these builders actively tender against each other for your project ensuring you get a competitive

comparative price which wont include any extras like franchise fees. Project Homes have a wide range of existing designs to choose from and they can easily architecturally design your home to suit your lifestyle and budget. If you already have your own plans drawn they are happy to price those too. Another major point of difference with Project Homes is their specialisation in the use of Triboard. Triboard is not a new material to the New Zealand home building industry; it has been around for 20 years now. “Triboard is made in New Zealand. It’s on average 10% cheaper than traditional materials and it also cuts the construction time in half ” says Dave. “We just want to say to people ‘why not give us a ring and get educated about the product before you make a decision.’ Then they can make a proper objective decision about whether they’d like to use this great product!” If you’re considering your options on the home building front, you would do very well to find out more about what this dynamic company can offer you.
