City car parks to go, this time on Vanguard St Andrew Board An apparent lack of council consultation has struck again, this time over the removal of car parks on Vanguard St without telling infuriated business-owners. A hastily-called meeting between a group of business-owners and three Nelson City Council staff members last Friday afternoon was tense as business people told staff that they would not stand by and let more car parks be taken away.

“Dozens” were removed for a remaining few on the road. “You are telling people, our turning bay in 2008, when Harvey Norman came to customers who put You are telling our customers food on our table, town say the businesses and they would not not to come here because they not to come here becan’t park anywhere let it happen again. cause they can’t park This time only two are anywhere, then when – Francis Lagrutta. proposed to go, to be they park on the footreplaced with trees as part of the Heart path you ticket them. Nelson’s coastline just got even safer thanks to a new $40,000 rescue boat. The boat, funded by New Zealand Community Trust, enables the Nelson Surf Life Saving club to continue to quickly respond to marine emergencies in the Nelson region. It replaces the club’s current rescue boat and is faster, lighter and easier to launch than its predecessor. Club president Marcus Gardner says the new boat will be a great asset and is a much needed upgrade. “It was often used to do beach patrols in the Tahunanui Beach area, rescuing kite surfers, kayakers and other water users. But, all this work has taken its toll. The boat had had several rebuilds and was on to its fourth engine. The new boat was blessed by Archdeacon Harvey Ruru and officially launched by deputy mayor Rachel Reese, last Friday. “We are a busy club, our members attend a water-related incident for every 8.8 volunteer hours we spend doing patrols, the highest rate in the country,” says Marcus. Paul Matheson, NZCT Regional Advisory Committee Chairman, said NZCT was proud to be involved in this project. “This is the good side to pokie money. There’s no doubt this new boat will be instrumental in saving lives on our rivers and along our coastline.”
