It makes sense as it’s where the growth is going to continue to be.

I don’t think it will make a huge difference, but it would be a coming of age for Richmond.

I always thought it was a bit like that anyway with Hope being separate from Richmond.

I think it’s the sensible thing to do provided the overall infrastructure stays the same.

Alsco Richmond facility opens

We will remember them

Jo Kent

Jacqui Rawson

Alsco’s new multi-million dollar premises on Estuary Place, off Lower Queen Street, has officially opened after a sixmonth build by Coman Construction. The commercial laundry company is one of the largest in the country, processing 45 tonnes of laundry a week and is the company’s most carbon-efficient plant in Australasia. Along with a burner fuelled by wood pellets – instead of coal – to provide steam, the Richmond facility has a new piece of machinery called a continuous batch washer that requires less water than other machines. Instead of 18 litres of water per kilogram of washing, the continuous batch washer uses about 5.4 litres. The water from the final rise is re-used in the first wash. Mayor Tim King went along for the opening. “There’s nothing more positive than a commercial build employing a lot of people,” says Tim. “It’s great to see this confidence shown in investing in the region.” The facility has generated 60 jobs.

This team of six were some of the locals out on Sunday for the annual Richmond Anzac Day parade and laying of the wreath at War Memorial Gardens, on Cambridge Street. This national day of remembrance commemorates all of those New Zealanders and Australians “who served and died in all wars, conflicts, and peacekeeping operations” and “the contribution and suffering of all those who have served”. Between them, the group have represented New Zealand in the forces since 1941. Johnny Johnston, who turns 100 on 9th June this year, joined the Royal New Zealand Air Force (RNZAF) in 1941 and fought in both WWII and the Vietnam War, with Robin Godbaz also serving in the latter as a soldier in the New Zealand Army (NZA). The others have served as peacekeeers within both the RNZAF and the NZA. Jill served in the New Zealand army in a communications role for six years. “It’s important to have Back row: John Llewellin, Ian Blackman, John D’Rose. Front row: Robin Jill here representing the important roles women played in the war,” says John D’Rose. Godbaz, Johnny Johnston, Jill Godbaz. Photo: Jacqui Rawson.

New Tasman police inspector Jenny Nicholson Tasman’s new Māori Responsiveness Manager, Inspector Tracey Wharehoka, has been welcomed to the region. A police representative says Tracey comes with extensive experience and passion, having worked across groups including frontline and road policing, investigations and iwi liaison. Her most recent role was senior teaching and learning advisor for Māori, Pacific and Ethnic Services at the Royal New Zealand Police College. “It’s not about me – it’s about everyone else,” says Tracey, commenting on her new role. She was acknowledged by her peers for her ability to ‘listen, look and then speak,’ as well as for building relationships in communities. Speeches at her welcome ceremony acknowledged there was a need for police and iwi to work together to support iwi communities. Inspector Tracey Wharehoka. Photo: Supplied.

Tasman house prices continue to soar

Median house prices in Tasman rose from $670,000 to $801,000 in the last year, according to Real Estate Institute of New Zealand figures. The 19.6 per cent increase was a median price record and just one of 12 regions to set records through New Zealand. Nelson’s

median price rose 13.7 per cent to $682,000 for the year, but prices fell 1.2 per cent in March compared to February.

Scooting through the tunnel

The mobility scooter rally on 8th May has had a lot of interest from the local Murchison community, according to event organiser Dot Charles. She is hoping there will be many from Richmond and Nelson attend too, when the group ride their mobility scooters

through Spooners Tunnel. Those without scooters are invited to cycle through with the rest of the group. There will be free ice-creams, sponsored by Waimea Weekly and Sujon, available to all participants on return through the tunnel. The rally starts at the south end of the tunnel and returns to the north end, before continuing to Flat Rock Café at Kohatu. Dot would like to remind everyone to wear warm clothing and take a torch. Council decision lands them in hot water Jo Kent Reporter

jo@waimeaweekly.co.nz

Tasman District Council have lost a dispute tribunal hearing, shelling out more than $5600 in compensation to business owner Debbie Hamel, director of Debz Smoothies Ltd. Debbie ran a smoothie cart in Sundial Square’s

southeast corner, but saw an opportunity to swap into a better location after a coffee cart operating adjacent to Queen Street was about to move on. She approached TDC and an agreement was made that she could trade from that spot once it was vacated and add coffee to her menu. She then undertook training as a barista in preparation for

her new role. However, before she could even pour her first flat white, the council decided to go back on their decision and told her the site was now open for expressions of interest from the general public. “That should have happened before they told me I could move there,” says Debbie. “I was so disappointed.”

The problem arose after elected members questioned whether the site should be publicly tendered, seeing as it is a public space, its visibility on Queen Street and also due to growing numbers of prospective businesses expressing interest in the site. Tim King was one of those elected members who queried the process and says that while he can

Freedom camping crackdown

Please, no wipes in pipes

Jo Kent Tougher measures for irresponsible freedom camping are being proposed, with plans to increase penalties for those who break the rules. Tourism Minister Stuart Nash has launched a public consultation and says new regulations are needed to protect the environment, remove the burden on locals and lift tourism quality. As Tasman attracted the highest number of freedom campers in New Zealand in 2019 with 151,000 camping nights, versus Queenstown’s 137,000, the shake-up would be welcomed by many. There is currently a problem with campers toileting in unsani-

Jenny Nicholson Flushing that wet wipe may be convenient, but it is also costly to ratepayers. A Tasman District Council report says wet wipes, even ‘flushable ones,’ cause havoc in our wastewater system. It costs taxpayers each time the system has to be pumped, and that is currently happening multiple times a week throughout the network. “At its cheapest it costs ratepayers hundreds of dollars every time a pump is pulled up to be cleared,” says TDC community relations manager Chris Choat. “Not only is it the pumps having issues, blocked pipes will also cause overflows from the wastewater network.” Even one or two wipes flushed can be a problem. While toilet paper disintegrates, wipes do not break up. They are designed to be tough, with a form of plastic part of their construction. And that is what causes the issue, as they get caught in the network. Although wipes are the most prevalent, the council has also had to pull out items of clothing. “The price of some people’s thoughtlessness is shared by everyone. So please, please, please, only flush the ‘three P’s: pee, poo and paper!” says the report.

understand Debbie’s disappointment, he believes it was right to open the vacant site to expressions of interest from anyone, which is what the council did. Despite winning the hearing, Debbie feels she was given a “raw deal” and has since sold her smoothie cart to work in a cafe. The council process for vacant spots is dealt with individually.

tary places – like the side of the road, and in the bush or rivers. Proposed changes include tighter rules for camping vehicles to be certified self-contained and around where camping can happen. Fines of up to $1000 or vehicle confiscation has been suggested for rule breakers, with rental companies responsible for collecting fines. Stuart says we have to set the rules now before borders fully open to international tourists, and even more so now the travel bubble has opened with Australia. “Responsible freedom campers are welcome. But it must be ‘right vehicle, right place,’” he says. “Abuse of the system threatens New Zealand’s desirability.” Freedom camping is under the spotlight. Photo: Jo Kent.

Nelson Matters Nelson can only be a loser from Labour’s radical centralization of healthcare and the scrapping of our Nelson/Marlborough District Health Board. It will mean Nelsonians having to travel more often to Christchurch or further to get access to specialist health services. It will make it harder for Nelson to attract and keep top medical professionals. It will mean the loss of local jobs. It will reduce

accountability and innovation in our local health services. Nelson has had control over its health services since the first hospital was built on Waimea Road in 1869. It’s been called a Hospital Board and then a Health Board, had changes in the mix of elected and appointed members and expanded in area, but it has always been governed by local people and a local Chief Executive.

The Nelson Marlborough DHB has had a long record of good performance. It did an exemplary job with Covid last year and is leading NZ in vaccination rollout. It has lead innovations with links between primary and secondary care, cardiac care, hospice and mental health. I would back big as better if it worked but it is the biggest DHB’s that have had the most

troubles. I have been contacted by UK doctors who describe themselves as refugees from their NHS who are horrified that New Zealand is adopting their centralised model. This takeover of our health services from Wellington follows last year’s changes in education where Government took over our 115 year old locally-run polytechnic, NMIT. Water is next on Labour’s centralisa-

tion agenda. Labour loves big bureaucracies and believes Wellington knows best. The Kiwibuild promise of 1000 homes in Nelson/Tasman but with none built shows Wellington cannot deliver. Health care will always be complex and expensive. I am open to genuine improvements and efficiencies, but these changes are bad for Nelson. Advert.

Abolishing DHBs divides local opinion Jenny Nicholson It is early days on what health reforms will mean for Nelson Tasman after Labour’s Health Minister Andrew Little said a central authority ‘Health New Zealand’ will replace all District Health Boards in the near future. Nelson MP Rachel Boyack welcomes the changes saying doctors, nurses and other health workers can concentrate on patients instead of battling bureaucracy. “The major reform will also do away with the postcode lottery that means people in some parts of the country receive different levels of care as opposed to those in other areas,” says Rachel. However, List MP Nick Smith says the “the radical centralisation of health services will be bad for Nelson and Tasman.” He says Nelson has run its own hospital for over 150 years and this loss of control, just like the loss of control of our Polytech, will make it harder to meet local needs and hold services accountable. “I’ve dealt with 100s of cases where care isn’t what it should be, and as a local MP have been able to ring and get it sorted. There is no chance of speaking to someone in a centralised service,” he says.

Nelson Marlborough Health’s chief exec Lexie O’Shea. Photo: Supplied. Currently each DHB has targets to meet, such as 90 per cent faster cancer treatment. Nelson Marlborough’s DHB has exceeded that target, while Northland’s DHB was sitting at only 61 per cent at the end of last year. Nelson Marlborough Health’s chief executive, Lexie O’Shea, said earlier this year that Nelson Marlborough Health had achieved 110 per cent of the Government’s targets for elective surgery. Lexie says the local leadership team has supported the intentions behind the reform from the start. “What matters most is that people in our region receive the best possible care and support, and that this is offered equitably,” she says.

She acknowledges that people in the community may have a lot of questions about the reform but that many of these can not be answered at present. Earlier this year, Lexie said two of her major focuses were better outcomes for the vulnerable in the community and locals avoiding hospitalisation unless necessary. These are in line with comments Andrew Little made in giving reasons for the reform. “We’ll treat people before they get sick so they don’t need hospital care, taking pressure off hospitals,” says Andrew. A new Maori health authority will be formed alongside Health New Zealand.

Climbing to Mt Arthur’s summit at 1795 metres is a major achievement at any age. But as Paddy Tarrant is in her 80th year, she is prouder than most. Mt Arthur is one of the highest peaks in Kahurangi National Park that stands out as part of the Nelson Tasman’s western skyline. “Paddy is an inspiration to us all,” says walk leader Richard Furness. Richard is part of a walking group for those aged 50 and over. Of the two groups that exist for this age range, Paddy’s group is for those tougher, longer walks. A group of 10 other walkers joined Paddy on the day of her awesome feat up Mt Arthur. On finishing the walk Paddy was heard to say, “Goodbye Mt Arthur, I will never see you again.” But Richard adds, “Mind you, she said that two years ago.” Paddy can usually be seen out walking or running around Stoke. Lakes in focus Jacqui Rawson

There are around 60 lakes in Tasman, of which 10 are being tested by a team of scientists in a project called Lakes380. It aims to gain an understanding of the environmental, social and cultural histories of 10 per cent of New Zealand’s 3800 lakes. “Lake Rotoiti is one of the country’s largest and most pristine, and this project will hopefully ensure it is kept that way,” says Cawthron Institute, Lakes380 programme coleader, Susie Wood. Susie is part of the team of scientists using the application of DNA-based tools. It is these tools that determine the

current and historic health of each lake. At its deepest, Lake Rotoiti goes down to 80 metres, the tools will go six metres deeper than this to gather core sediment. The sediment contains clues to what’s happening in the lake and on the land surrounding it. “The samples we take are like a historical storybook,” says Susie. Earthquakes, climate change and the introduction of invasive species can all be identified. “It’s cheaper and faster to take action to stop degradation in the first place than to restore a lake that’s already degraded,” says Susie. The hope is that good lakes like Lake Rotoiti will have continued protection.

More road changes for Richmond

Jenny Nicholson

As a result of traffic monitoring and discussions held with Richmond residents, four new speed humps, a road closure, and reducing traffic to one lane are among the temporary changes being trialled in the area. New speed bumps and planter boxes have been placed in Elizabeth Street and it is now closed to traffic at the Talbot Street intersection. “We’re trialling changes to create a safer and more interesting space in this neighbourhood,” says Tasman District Council community relations manager Chris Choat. The changes are expected to be in place until July, and feedback will help decide if the measures stay.

Another change is reducing Florence Street to one lane between Herbert and Fauchelle Streets to encourage slower traffic flow. There will be a pedestrian refuge on Talbot Street The project is funded by Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency whose aim is to allow streets to become community spaces.

Support for baby loss in Tasman Jenny Nicholson Reporter

jenny@waimeaweekly.co.nz

The new legislation surrounding paid bereavement leave following miscarriage or stillbirth comes at a great time for Emma Hebberd, who is coordinating the set-up of a local Sands support group which acknowledges the grief families experience following the loss of a baby. “It’s a really positive outcome for our families to just have some of that support and time they need to grieve their loss,” she says. The law change allows an employee to take up to three days’ paid bereavement leave if they or their partner experiences a miscarriage or stillbirth. “Losing a baby is very hard and unfortunately quite common, with around one in five pregnancies ending in miscarriage,” says Employment New Zealand. Emma will front the region’s Sands group and is currently liaising with other women who will be frontline supporters. The charity currently has 25 groups across the country, with the majority of volunteers having experienced the death of a baby themselves. “We

While the first priority is helping bereft mothers, she is hoping support will reach to whole families in time. “The loss of a baby certainly affects partners and children, especially if older children are aware there is a pregnancy,” she says. At this stage, a monthly child-friendly support group is planned, which will offer parents a place to share expe-

Memories of war and life in Tasman Jacqui Rawson Grace Parker spent World War 2 as a sergeant in the British Air Force. She was 19 when the war began and, like a lot of females around her, she wanted to get involved. “I decided to get away from home and see what was going on in the world,” says Grace. Grace, who turned 99 on 24 March, grew up in Gloucester, England, home of a Royal Air Force base that served both British and American troop carriers. The eldest of three girls, and with a brother in the army, Grace didn’t want to be stuck at home looking after her sisters. “With everyone doing something, I wanted to join in the fun of being part of a group,” she says. Grace eventually became a

sergeant and served the 149 Squadron, and still remembers her military number off

time in the Air Force.” Grace says it was very scary at times, you made a lot of friends but lost a lot as well. Her platoon was responsible for ensuring the airmen were prepared for each flight, kitted out with the correct uniform and specialist equipment. Everything had a number and Grace would go to the massive ‘stores’ shed to get what was needed according to her list of specific numbers. “It wasn’t like going to a normal shop to buy a pair of trousers.” Part of Grace’s role as a sergeant was to make sure the other 25 or so woman in her platoon were up to scratch Grace when she was a with regulations. sergeant in the Royal Air “Some of them tried to wear Force during World War II their hat at a jaunty angle or ripped their uniform just to get a new one,” she says. the top of her head. “I wasn’t enlisted, I volun- Grace left the Air Force at the teered, and I enjoyed my end of the war, and with her

But Grace being Grace, she eventually said, “bugger this, there must be more to life than this,” and signed up for a British government scheme to come to New Zealand. Her boat passage to Nelson was paid for by the government and paid back out of Grace’s wages once she was in paid employment in Nelson. The boat trip took six weeks and Grace doesn’t have fond memories of it. “That was the worse six weeks of my life, I spent most of it with my head hanging over the side with sea sickness. It was awful.” But survive it she did, arriving in her late twenties and eventually marrying her Kiwi husband when she was 29. “You know what they say, ‘life is what you make it’,” says Grace.

Living in the Top of the South during World War II Jacqui Rawson A Richmond resident for 60 years, Lesley Harvey, now 87 years old, shares her memories. Lesley’s father was a butcher who was following the family tradition by taking over Cotton Butchers on Bridge Street from his father. In those days, the butchers went directly to the abattoir, which was near Tahunanui. They’d buy the carcass and then divide it into cuts of meat once back in the shop. They also created their own small goods, and to pay for the purchases you had to do so at the ‘office’ in the store. During the war, you could only buy meat using governmentsupplied coupons from your ration book. Lesley’s family also had a small butcher shop opposite the Griffin’s chocolate factory which Lesley says made her a lot of friends. The friends would come for the free saveloys and then Lesley would head across the road with them for the free

bits of discarded chocolate. There were air-raid shelters on the corner of Nile Street near Central School, which Lesley remembers came with toilets. Because Japanese submarines were in New Zealand waters total blackouts were enforced, with Lesley’s father putting plywood over all the windows. The Home Guard would go around and check everything was as it should be. There were also a lot of American sailors coming into Nelson port and her father, who was a very social man with the gift of the gab, would often invite them home. You walked everywhere and expectations were that you wore a hat. Lesley remembers sitting in the hat shop when she was young while her mum tried on hat after hat. If you were wealthy enough to be able to afford a car, you could only buy one if you knew somebody who knew somebody, and you had to use British pounds. New Zealand pounds weren’t the currency for buying cars.

Lesley Harvey’s tearooms. Photo: Supplied. Skeins of wool were rationed and there were always queues to get it so people could knit socks. There were no second-hand clothes shops to buy from. Cosmetics were almost nonexistent and there was only one orange lipstick called Tangy, which Lesley remembers her mother complaining about. The farmer would deliver milk to homes in great big metal cans

Tasman’s 10-Year Plan Paul Bensemann ! ‘Developer’s Dream’ or ‘Death by a Thousand Cuts’ could be titles for Tasman District Council’s 10-Year Plan. The underlying theme, Hollywood comes to Richmond ‘growth is good’, promotes 4300 more houses Julia Twort: “Something different for a change to and 7700 extra people, a 13.65 per cent popusee in the school holidays. [The R2D2 robot] was lation increase on 56,400. Tasman already has very well done and made.” more residents than Nelson City’s 54,600. ‘Choices’ are mentioned, but locals are given no real choice. It’s either $124 or $169 million for NBS NELSON CITY BRASS PRESENTS more housing, and while Waimea Dam costs are harder to fathom in the public relations hype, the council says it’s ‘contractually obliMU SIC gated to proceed.’ Meanwhile, climate change is an empty bureaucratic buzzword. It’s simply bad planning to further clog the roads, intensify land-use, pollute waterways and destroy the rural nature of our coastal hills. A sustainable, intelligent 21st century vision and stable population should replace this 1950s blueprint. Beautiful Tasman must be saved, please!

and you would put your billy can out on the doorstep to be filled. He’d scoop the milk out into the billy can with what was called a ‘dipper’. Lesley remembers the cream in those days being beautiful and that her mum would always boil it to get the beautiful, scalded bit that congealed on top. There were soup kitchens as so many people were poor. Lesley

remembers the Harley Brewery which was near the Cathedral and Dodson’s Fizzy drinks which you bought at the dairy and were also rationed. Hotels closed at 6pm and on Sundays, and females weren’t allowed in the main bars. There were hotels called the Masonic, Panama, Central, Royal and the Wakatu, the latter two being on the corner of Collingwood and Bridge Streets. For entertainment, the square dancing at Nelson Intermediate was very popular. Otherwise, there was the Theatre Royal, which put on shows with older male actors as the younger ones were off fighting. There was no orchestra, but Clary Lee played the piano and Mrs Vaughan played the violin. You dressed up for the night, “flash-as-flash”. There were also ANZAC concerts during the war to raise money for soldiers. Tea rooms were popular and you sat and were waited on by waitresses wearing white gloves.

Free women’s car mechanics workshops are being offered in Brightwater Local women now have the opportunity to learn more about road vehicles in a fun car mechanic and maintenance workshop being held on a monthly basis at Brightwater Motors. Aimed at empowering women with a greater knowledge of cars, ‘Chicks That Fix’ provides tips and tricks to help demystify even the simplest of tasks – such as wheel and oil changing. “We get so many women into our workshop who wish they knew more” says Brightwater Motors owner Dave Gilberd. “We’re really excited about starting these sessions up for them.” ‘Chicks That Fix’ is a free, one and a half hour workshop inviting casual or regular attendance with no booking required. Participants should come prepared to get a little dirty and have a few laughs – the goal being for people to come for the social side – time away from the kids, fun with friends and so-on – as much as for the learning. Our Mission

No more music for pre-schoolers Jenny Nicholson After over 20 years, ‘music and rhythm’ held in the Brightwater Anglican Church hall came to an end this month. Nicola Berthelsen had led the group for over 15 years, with another 10 years involvement before that. “I have loved every minute of it,” says Nicola. She said that with people working, and more children in day

care, numbers had dropped from a high of 40 children a session in previous years to five to 10 this year. Nicola is working with seniors in the community and felt it was the right time to finish with music and rhythm, but says that St John’s church in Wakefield has a music and movement session on the same day and at the same time for those who are interested.

With the vaccine, it’s all possible Our immunity against COVID-19 is incredibly important. Because it brings more possibilities for us all. Possibilities like keeping our way of life intact; our kids being able to learn without worrying about interruptions; or being able to plan gatherings with whānau, or team trips away, without fear of them getting cancelled. Immunity can bring us all this, as well as more certainty in our jobs, and more confidence in our businesses. With the strength of an immune system made up of all of us, together we can, and will, create more freedom, more options, and more possibilities for everyone.

The COVID-19 vaccine is a triumph of modern science Creating the COVID-19 vaccines took a global effort. The world united to take on the challenge, with medical professionals and scientists from across the planet working thousands of hours to bring it to us quickly and safely. Our Pfizer vaccine works by teaching your immune system to fight off the virus. Once you’ve had both doses of the vaccine it has been shown to be up to 95% effective at stopping

you from catching COVID-19. It also greatly reduces symptoms if you do catch COVID-19 – making it far less likely that you’ll fall seriously ill, or pass it on to others. Along with our existing actions like scanning QR codes with Bluetooth turned ‘on’, and staying home when you’re sick, getting the vaccine is the best way to protect Aotearoa against COVID-19. Nelson Netball

With only one round completed in 2020 before Covid-19 abruptly halted the season, local netballers are itching to get back on court. It’s been a long wait for players with just six premier games able to be played last season.

2021

There will again be six sides competing for the top prize in Nelson Netball as defending champions Prices Ahurei will be challenged by Jacks, Stoke, Richmond, Prices Pango and Nelson College for Girls.

Prices will attempt to secure a three peat after securing the titles in 2018 and ’19. The side will be without inspirational captain Dayna Whiting, who will sit out the season as she prepares for the birth of her first child, but will once again 8/04/21have 2:34 the PM services of star shooter Shar Lowe. Kalyssa Rasmussen shapes as a key figure following her recent shift from Stoke while Holly Chandler has consistently been a standout on defence. Former Tactix star Zoe Walker will also return to the region after an injury plagued run while Lucy Ingham will be a handful on attack. Prices biggest rivals will of course be Jacks, beaten finalists in both 2019 and ’18. Dual superstar Jess Drummond will again be integral to Jacks' sucess as the side will be desperate to break their title drought after consecutive heart-breaking losses. Jordan Webby’s performance in the

2019 final was indicative of her value to Jacks, her intercepts crucial to stifling the opposition attack while college star Chloe Webb will be one to keep an eye on. Richmond boasts a strong looking squad with the acquisition of Bayley Templeton from Jacks and Natalie Fullman from Prices as well as national touch rep Courtney Lott while veteran Kat Jones brings plenty of experience to the circle. Stoke's Megan Thomson will be hoping to continue her strong shooting form on the back of slick service from Amber Healey and Sarah Fitsimanu. Kimberly Curry leads an inexperienced Nelson College for Girls side. Also, new to the Nelson Netball scene this season is Leigh Gibbs, who has taken the reins as Centre Manager. Leigh brings a wealth of experience to her new role as gold medalist and world champion. She

has served as assistant coach for the Silver Ferns when the team won a gold medal at both the Commonwealth Games and the World Championships in 2003 and 2006 and a silver medal at the same two competitions in 2002 and 2007. She is a former Silver Ferns captain and vice-captain and won the World Championships as a player in 1979 and 1987 and coached the Mainland Tactix from 2012-2014. Leigh is delighted at an increase in player numbers with seven extra sides entered into competition in 2021. “I am really encouraged, we are hoping the competition is going to be a really enjoyable one and a really positive experience for everyone involved whether they are players, coaches, umpires or officials.” Leigh says she will observe a full season before making any changes in her new role. “I have got some ideas, but I

festival. A rep season will also start at the beginning of May for U14-18’s. The NBS Premier Netball Competition will get underway on Thursday May 6 with Saturday netball starting two days later. The season will run through until September. Teams will battle it out across three competition rounds followed by semis and finals. An automatic promotion/rel-

Despite the fact that the people I live with don’t always appreciate it, I like to sing. And it would seem that I am more committed to quantity than I am to quality – not just forsaking quality when it comes to the tune, but also with the lyrics. One of my sons takes great pleasure in telling me when I get the words wrong – which, to be fair, is quite often! I know of other people who have also got the words wrong, often with amusing results. For instance, a friend of mine once sang ‘There’s a tractor in my kitchen’, mistaking the title line of Tim Finn’s ‘There’s a fraction too much fiction’. ‘Take your teeth out, tell me what’s wrong’ is an entertaining mistaken lyric from Abba’s Chiquitita! Mistaking the lyrics of a song means that I thought the words were ‘x’ but they are actually ‘y’. This also happens with Christianity – not in mistaking the lyrics, but people misunderstanding what Christianity is all about. There’s a whole list of things that could be included in this list, but today I will briefly mention one – which

This Saturday, the Motueka Scottish Country Dance Club are hosting an event that previous attendees can’t wait to go to. “We are often asked, ‘when is the next one?’” says organiser Fay Martin. The event goes by the Gaelic name of a ceilidh, (pronounced kay-lee) which originated in Scotland and Ireland and means to visit or have a party. They date back to 1875 and traditionally involve Celtic folk music, singing, dancing, storytelling and card playing. “People love these fun gatherings, especially as they are run by locals, for locals.” The event is similar to barndancing and creates much hilarity, according to Fay. There is also a variety of entertainment organised for the night; including being welcomed by combined Motueka and the City of Nelson Highland Pipe Bands, items by local Motueka musicians, Morris dancers, storytelling,

is the perception that Christians think they are better than other people. I can understand why people think this. Over the years, Christians have done a great job of being self-righteous and judgmental. This is super-ironic, in that the people who Jesus got most ticked-off with were the selfrighteous religious leaders of the time. The ‘misheard lyric’ that ‘Christians think they are better than other people’ is simply wrong. And here’s the truth. Every Christian starts their journey with Jesus with a moment when they realise they are broken and in need of God – and this realisation of one’s own brokenness is usually a painful and humbling experience. Christians are, in fact, people who know they are deeply flawed and in need of the spiritual healing that Jesus provides. For those of you who are not Christians, I would encourage you to test this theory out. If you know a Christian – and they are not a self-righteous prat! – ask them how they started their journey with Jesus. I guarantee that part of their story will be coming to the realisation that they are broken and flawed. Go ahead and see what happens.

Waimea pip Marist at death in another epic encounter Jonty Dine Waimea Old Boys first five Campbell Parata says he has been dreaming about a shot at redemption. Last season, the young sharpshooter had a chance to steal a game from rivals Marist with a last minute penalty which he sent sailing just wide of the uprights. On Saturday he made no such mistake as he kicked the winning points in an epic showdown at Trafalgar Park. The Marist vs Waimea rivalry has seen some breath-taking finishes in recent seasons and Saturday’s clash, which yielded 97 points, may just be the most thrilling encounter between the two sides to date. Campbell showed great composure in a high pressure situation to rain on Marist’s 75th jubilee celebration and claim the 49-48 victory. “Such a different feeling to last year, same situation with the kick to win it, but just so glad it went over this time.” Campbell says it was an exhausting 80 minutes in a seesawing battle. “We knew it would take an eighty minute performance, the past three years it has come down to the wire and it

did again.” Fresh off his stint with the Crusaders U20’s, Macca Springer burst through a hole and set up Caleb Coventry to score the first try. Erenimo Tau made it two after just 12 minutes as the powerful midfielder went through some weak defence to score under the sticks. Down 17-0 , Marist needed a spark and it appeared to come from Cleve Barrell who did brilliantly to get over the line, only to spill the ball as he went to put it down.

The hosts did get on the board moments later through Rahiri Witehera before Niko Barton closed the gap to just three as the fleet-footed fullback danced his way through the Waimea line. After just thirty minutes, six stunning tries had been scored. The final score of 49-48 to Waimea indicated there will be more close encounters between these two teams as the season continues. Campbell says that he hopes they don’t all come down to a final kick. Michael Stringer played his 50th Senior A game for Waimea Old Boys recently as the team finished strongly to win against Huia. Over those 50 games, Michael has played every position in the backline except 9, scored over 100 points for the team and captained both the Senior A side and the 7’s side. The club will celebrate their 125th Anniversary from 4th to 6th June this year. To register go to www.sporty.co.nz/viewform/134761. Paper forms are available at the office. Photo: Supplied.

Wanderers weekend round up Staff Reporter

Taylors Wanderers Rugby Div 1 and Div 2 teams travelled to Greenmeadows on Saturday to compete against Stoke in the Tasman Rugby Union championships. In excellent conditions in front of an extremely supportive and large crowd, two entertaining and highly competitive games developed. In the early game, having lost 6 players last week

to injury, Wanderers started well with an early penalty and a well-taken try by Hunter Van der Fits during a period of almost complete dominance, playing at a good pace and recycling the ball very well. Two further tries, to Theo Moore and Jake Jenner, all unconverted, created a deserved 20-point lead. Stoke woke up in the second half and slowly exerted pressure on to the Wanderers pack and two quick tries brought the game back to a contest at 2010. A quick tap penalty by Gareth Palmer saw him extend the lead to 27-10 before Stoke scored almost directly from the restart to narrow the score to 27-17, and then another well taken Stoke try had the match in the balance at 27-22 for the final minutes. However, Wanderers displayed fine tenacity and character to hold on for a thoroughly deserved victory, based primarily on their first half performance. Dion Palmer, in his first game for 8 years, received the Forward of the Day award and Shaun Whittaker created havoc in the backline. The marked

Photo: Supplied. improvement in discipline from last week was a key factor in the performance and with 4 debutantes turning out, signs for the future are positive. Coach Alan Davis was pleased with the team effort which enabled the backs to display their flair. In the main event between two unbeaten teams, albeit in only the 3rd round of the competition, play started in a similar vein with Wanderers Luca Roden kicking a penalty from an early period of attack by the visitors, followed by a Stoke error on the restart which allowed further dominance and field

position for the Wanderers pack, eventually resulting in a very smart try to captain Sam Moli from a lineout on the Stoke 5- metre line. With Roden’s sideline conversion, Wanderers had a 10-0 lead. This appeared to galvanise Stoke into action and they then scored four tries in succession through a combination of sustained pressure and Wanderers missed tackles and errors, to take a very handy 24-10 lead. As in the opening game of the season against Central when Wanderers fell behind early, coach Glenn Grant never worried that the lead

was insurmountable as long as the players trusted each other and continued to carry out the game plan as agreed. Although giving away size to a larger pack, the Wanderers forwards carried the ball aggressively in the second period, with Sam Moli leading by example but ably supported by Sesefo Vaka, Chris Haluafia, and Josh Moorhouse. Some great impetus from Tone Vaka and Nino Peniamina in the backline resulted in tries to Dan Mc Lauchlan, Chris Haluafia and Jayden Woolley, while Stoke added another for the score to be 31-27 to Stoke with 15 minutes remaining. Wanderers’ replacement players all contributed in the final 20 minutes, with Seth Brown and Monu Moli, both on debut, Sione Holani and Tyler Power all proving the worth of impact players off the bench and the final try scored by Jayden Woolley took the lead back to Wanderers at 34-31. As with the earlier game, the visitors showed courage to repel numerous Stoke attacks and secure two turnovers to then finish hard on attack.
