Nelson grows, schools bigger There will be more school lunches made in Nelson this year, with three of the region’s secondary schools enrolling more students than ever before. Waimea College tops the list for the largest secondary school in the region by quite some margin with 1530 students enrolling for 2014 – highlighting the growth of Richmond. “The roll has probably increased by about
25-30 students since last year. It’s been close to 1500 for three or four years now but this is the highest it’s ever been,” principal Larry Ching says. Larry believes the two main reasons Waimea College continues to grow are because of the increasing population in Richmond and the subjects, courses and activities on offer which meant “students have no reason to go past” Waimea College.

editorial@waimeaweekly.co.nz The second biggest, Nelson College, has a school roll of 1125. Nelson has been helped by their largest ever intake of Year 9 students, while also benefiting from the growth of Richmond with more Tasman-
based students enrolling. “We’re growing exponentially,” Nelson College headmaster Gary O’Shea says. “Our Year 9 intake is 247 boys, which is up from around 215 from 2012.” Gary replied “we’re successful” when asked why the school had experienced such a big growth for this year, and says there are still

‘Friends’ help keep gardens in top shape Ellen Brinkman’s description of Nelson’s Queens Gardens is almost poetic, so it’s no surprise she is central to a team of volunteers who spend hours in the gardens each week, helping to make them look their best. The Friends of Queens Gardens formed more than a year ago to help keep the gardens clean and tidy. Between eight and 14 volunteers turn up each week to “fluff ” the garden by cleaning down the tables and

“I think it is a great idea . I think the elaborate coffin looks really out of place in this day and age. It’s good to be sustainable.”
“No. It won’t be my problem when I die.”

Ellen says the idea stemmed from the lobby group, Queens Gardens Preservation Society, and she has coordinated it ever since. Asked why the group is so passionate about the 120 year old historic gardens, she pauses in thought. “The power of the gardens is that, although they’re on a very small amount of land, you can’t see it all at once, so there are mysteries that unfold. As you walk through you can’t see long distances, you go around corners and get new views, from deep shadow and bright light, parts that are quite tended like the roses and parts that are quite natural, like the woodland. “In that very small space you get a whole

The Queens Gardens tease you through them.” Nelmac is in charge of the gardens, on behalf of Nelson City Council, and does the upkeep work, planting and other caretaking roles and Ellen insists it is down to its hard work that the gardens look so good. “Nelmac do all the work really, we just polish around what they do,” she says. “We’re really grateful to Nelmac and the council and for the opportunity to be in the gardens.” The volunteers say gardening can often be a
lonely hobby so being involved in the group makes it quite a sociable morning. “There’s something quite lovely about being in the gardens as a group. People talk about the movies they’ve seen, the books they’ve read and where they’re going next week.” Ellen says they get plenty of positive comments for their work. “People often tell us that they like us being there, the sound of raking, the sound of people laughing while they deadhead the roses and people tending gives the sense – if I could summarise from the feedback that I get – they love to see them being tended.” Other volunteers say the gardens are special because of their history and visitors often marvel at them. Volunteers are welcome to join the group, the only condition is having a good back and enjoying the outdoors. For more information call Ellen on 546 6533.

Night vision goggles catch out burglars Simon Bloomberg Reporter
simon@waimeaweekly.co.nz
When a local man filmed a burglary at the Hope Tennis Club rooms using infrared night vision video equipment last week, it was so dark he says he was “standing in the open within 80 metres of the offenders without being detected”. The man, who does not wish to be named, was testing the night vision equipment in Hope Domain just after midnight on Wednesday when he observed a male and female acting suspiciously by one of the buildings. He remained motionless and recorded the pair breaking into the Hope Tennis Club rooms and phoned police while continuing to film the event. Police arrived and chased the male offender as he tried to

The woman was also arrested at the scene - both were wearing gloves and had a range of tools police believe were used in the the burglary. filmed police arriving at the domain. “A car pulled onto the domain carpark and its occupants made a beeline towards the tennis clubrooms,” he says. “This aroused enough suspicion to phone the police. The digital night vision recorder was used to maintain visual contact with the offenders. The subsequent
arrest was captured to an SD memory card.” The Hope resident says he was using a Pulsar Recon night vision camera which his company has supplied to the Ministry for Primary Industries, Fisheries Compliance and Response Units, as well as to private security and surveillance companies. He believes it should be standard police equipment for “stealthily patrolling dark places”. “Using this equipment enables an officer to covertly observe and record a potentially dangerous situation while waiting for backup, to arrive” he says. Police were provided with the graphic evidence and a 21-year-old man and a 18-year-old woman were charged with burglary and they were due to appear in the Nelson District Court on Monday afternoon.

‘Exceptional’ season keeps farmers happy Farmers around the Nelson-Tasman region are making hay while the sun shines as they benefit from one of the best growing seasons on record. Sheep and beef farmers are reporting prolific growth rates for stock after a mild winter and regular rain through spring and early summer. Perfect growing conditions across the region have also been good news for dairy farmers with milk production up on last season. And that represents a dramatic reversal of fortune for farmers who just last summer were facing the prospect of battling through another drought. The dry spell finally came to an end in the autumn and since then the region has been experiencing some of the best farming weather for decades. “It’s been quite an exceptional period since the dry spell broke last autumn,” Federated Farmers Nelson provincial president Gavin O’Donnell says. “We have had a mild winter and great spring growth that has continued into the summer and as a result we’ve seen better livestock performance and dairy production. “It’s also allowed farmers to replenish conserved feed stocks and that’s given them a level of security going into the winter. It’s been a nice reprieve from some of the tougher years we have been through lately.” Farmer Ian Parkes says he is enjoying “one of the best seasons we have had in 30 years of farming”. Although lambing percentages were down slightly after last year’s dry spell, survival has been exception-

ally high resulting a record lambing for the property. “There’s been no real pressure since last autumn and we lambed at 154 per cent compared to around 130 or 140 per cent last year,” Ian says. Ian says the average weight of lambs at weaning was 19 kilograms which is one kilogram heavier than last season. Dairy farmer Evan Baigent says it has been a “brilliant season” with exceptional pasture growth resulting in high milk production. “It’s been one of the better seasons in a life time of milking cows,” Evan says. “We have had a good production season coinciding with high milk prices so it’s been excellent.” Dairy farmers across the region and throughout the country are experiencing the same conditions with Fonterra forecasting national milk volumes to increase by 6.4 per cent to 1556 million kilograms of milk solid for 2013-2014. Although farmers are benefitting directly from the increased productivity, Ian and Evan point out that it also affects the wider community. Evan says the benefits flow onto agricultural contractors and service industries as well as retailers. “All of a sudden everyone is doing maintenance around the farm and upgrading things and they haven’t done that for a while,” Evan says. “All of that flows on to the whole community.”

Two and a half year old Kaila Laskey has spent the first part of her young life battling a disorder so rare that there’s no surgery to cure it in this country. Kaila has been diagnosed with a rare illness called Achalasia, which makes it hard for her to eat like a normal toddler. The disease affects the oesophagus muscle causing difficulty in swallowing, chest pain and regurgitation of food and liquids. Since she was a baby she’s battled to eat and after ten operations, guesswork by doctors and lots of frustration from mum Alana Mayo, they’ve finally found out what’s wrong with her. The only problem is, there’s no fix for her in this country. Kaila was diagnosed just two weeks ago but has been told New Zealand doesn’t have the facilities to perform the surgery that will cure her. Instead Sydney is the closest hospital she could have the operation at, but the New Zealand Health Board has declined a bid to help get Kaila there and Alana says she’s desperate for options. “I don’t sleep any more, I cry myself to sleep every night; my

New Rutherford day all go Your Community Newspaper
Plans to honour Nelson’s most famous son are well underway and organiser Tony Flewellen says the inaugural Rutherford Day will definitely be held this year. Tony wants Brightwater born physicist Ernest Rutherford – who is best known as the man who split the atom – to be celebrated with a recognised day of remembrance. Plans are going full steam ahead to make August 30 of this year the very first and
Rutherford Day is already taking shape, with a week’s worth of events planned for the leadup. “We’ll be involving kids in schools, I’d like to see some recognition of the sciences in our region, science awards or grants given on the day for the official side of things and the rest of it will be about having a bit of fun, demystifying science. We’re still in the planning stages, gathering ideas and wanting input. But it’s definitely going

reporter@nelsonweekly.co.nz ahead.” Support for the event is building, both locally and internationally, with several scholars including Professor Andy Parker, head of the Cavendish Laboratory at the University of Cambridge writing in
support of Rutherford Day. “Everybody’s been one hundred percent supportive.” Mayor Rachel Reese has also lent her support to Rutherford Day. “This is an opportunity to acknowledge our heritage and also to engage in our future. I hope our schools, NMIT, the Cawthron Institute and businesses will also get behind the idea. Who knows – Nelson might inspire another Nobel prize winner.”
Vintage engine club to host 40th show
The desire to keep historical machinery in the region and out of the rubbish dump was what prompted the Nelson Vintage Engine and Machinery Club to form. Forty years later and the club has brought hundreds of items back to life through long hours of volunteer restoration. This weekend the club is celebrating its anniversary by holding a 40th show at Higgins Park in Pigeon Valley – the steam museum which the club has called home for the past 20 years.
As well as vintage tractors and machinery being on display, there will be free rides with the traction engine and railway jigger, ladies handiwork displays, hay baling, sawmilling, and the transport and military vehicle machines will be open. The show will be held this Saturday and Sunday from 9am until 4pm. Entry is $5 for adults while children under 13 years old are free. For more information phone Allan Palmer on 027 319 7427.

Wine and food fest to help community The Brightwater Wine and Food Festival isn't just about having a good time – it's also about helping some of the Nelson-Tasman region's hardest working community groups and volunteers do their job. The Rotary Club of Richmond's fundraising event has been held nine times raising $230,000 for community groups around the region. So when Richmond Rotary announced it was planning to go ahead with the festival in 2014 after a year off it was good news for a number of organisations including the Brightwater Rural Fire Force. The Brightwater Rural Fire Force received donations from Richmond Rotary after organising the car parking at previous festivals and the force's controller Ross Stratford says they are delighted the festival is returning after being postponed last year. It had been the force's principal fundraising event and they are looking forward to putting on high visibility vests to direct traffic again at the Middle-Earth Vineyard on Bryant Rd in Bright-
water on Sunday February 16. "The Brightwater Wine and Food Festival had been our major source of fundraising for a number of years so we were really pleased it's back. It's a full-on day but it's also a very rewarding day – sometimes you can spend a lot of time fundraising for very little return." Although the Brightwater Rural Fire Force receives funding from the Tasman District Council and forestry companies through the Waimea Rural Fire Authority, Ross says the donations from Richmond Rotary will allow the force to buy extra equipment. "We are still fine financially but we don't have to buy many items to deplete the bank account. The money from Rotary means we can buy things like defibrillators and oxygen for medical emergencies and better personal protective equipment for our fire fighters – it's a big help. "But we aren't the only ones who benefit. There's lots of other groups that benefit so it's good for the whole community." This year proceeds from the fes-

Although it's a quite a challenge directing 700 to 800 cars, firefighter Janti Makan says they have perfected their parking systems over the years and now it is
an enjoyable day out. "The first year we didn't manage things that well and ended up having to physically lift a car and move it because it was blocking an exit. The only real issue we have now is if we get a call out to a fire and we have to take off and leave the parking to Rotary." Tickets to the the Brightwa-
ter Wine and Food Festival cost $15 and can be purchased from Colourplus Nelson, Colourplus Richmond, Haven Realty offices in Nelson and Richmond, Everyman Records in Nelson, Village Cycles in Richmond, Avanti Plus Richmond, Specsavers in the Richmond Mall. Gate sales will cost $20.

Sarau fest not just a showcase of blackcurrants The Sarau Festival is guaranteed to have something for everyone with the Moutere district showcasing its finest food, wine, beer and arts and crafts as well as all things blackcurrant at the Moutere Hills Community Centre this Sunday. The annual country fair has grown in popularity since it started in 2008 and coordinator Jenny Leith says they have worked hard to make this year’s edition the best yet. All the regular stalls, activities and entertainment have been retained and some new ones added to keep the festival interesting, she says. “We always try to have something that is new but at the same time we keep the
formula that has worked,” Jenny says. One of the most popular items has always been the cooking demonstrations and this year Upper Moutere chef Miles Drewery will be the guest chef. Miles won the supreme award for best product to promote blackcurrants and the best innovative recipe award for his venison and blackcurrant pie at the 2010 festival and says he’s got something special on the menu this year. “I wanted to do something a bit different so I’ve gone for a blackcurrant and chorizo paella. I’ll also make some blackcurrant marshmallows and a blackcurrant and thyme drink which is really good for people with asthma

Skate park tour ends on a high
The talent on display at the Tasman Skatepark Tour just keeps increasing, and the organisers are praising another successful event. The Tasman Skatepark Tour concluded in Richmond on Saturday after five competitions in other corners of the region. Entries were again high for the Richmond leg, which along with Motueka, is the most popular. “There was definitely a resurgence in scootering and we had a lot of the old school skaters back as well,” spokesperson Paul McConachie of the Tasman District Council says. “Spectators showed up in big numbers to support it and the tricks were probably a bit more advanced than last year so overall we were stoked with how it turned out.” Overall winners in each of the three categories; BMX, skate and scooter, were also crowned. Dylan Boffa-Martin was the victor in the BMX with Reggie McDonald claiming enough points to take out the skate competition, while there was a tie between Mita Timpson and Tuts Kinita in the scooter grade. For winning, Dylan, Reggie and Tuts received a BMX bike, skateboard and scooter depending on which discipline they entered in thanks to event sponsors Village Cycles and Cheapskates.

industry Jenny says it will also feature a range of horticultural products in the Grown in the Moutere marquee. Jenny says there will be about 100 art and interest stalls including food, wine and beer while live entertainment will be provided on stage by the Groove Collectors, Lipstick and Jacket and Upper Moutere’s Ella Doty. Jenny says they have kept the admission charge down to $5 for adults with children free so that it remained an affordable day out. The festival will be held at the Moutere Hills Community Centre and domain on the Moutere Highway this Sunday from 3pm to 9pm. No dogs are allowed.

The car may have been Mini but the restoration and fundraising project has been anything but. The Wakefield Caffeine Crew’s BMG Mini for Nelson Cancer project is close to the $100,000 mark with nearly 10,000 raffle tickets sold ahead of this week’s draw. Two years ago four Wakefield men – Bob Croy, Dal Stewart John Bruce and Martin Reid – bought a $750 Morris Mini Mk3 in the hope they could restore it and raffle it off for charity – all because their fundraising efforts at the Relay for Life had been beaten by a group that raised $6000. With a plan to top that at this year’s event, the caffeine crew who met together for coffee, found considerable support from throughout the community with Bowater Motor Group coming on board to fund all of the parts, and other businesses donating their services to the restoration. During the months that raffle tickets have been selling for $10, the group has managed to rack up nearly 10,000 sales, meaning the $750 Mini has turned into $100,000 for the Nelson Cancer Society. Other prizes have also been added included $18,000 worth of travel from House of Travel. Speaking ahead of Thursday’s draw at the

editorial@waimeaweekly.co.nz Wakefield Police Station at 1pm, Bob says the whole project has been a lot better than they could have ever hoped. “We were going to do it ourselves on a shoestring but we’ve had so many sponsors come in and help us,” he says. “Nobody says no and the way the automotive trade in Nelson, particularly Bowaters, has got behind this has been amazing,” says Martin. The reason they chose the Mini was because it’s an iconic car that was instantly recognizable. “You see the little kids walk past and they go ‘oh look it’s a Mini!’ They all know it from Mr Bean or Goodbye Pork Pie. Everyone knows it, even for little kids.” The restoration took 20 months, and overall the project has taken two years, which sparked Bob to joke that they’ve probably aged considerably since the very first photos. A big crowd is expected at the Wakefield Police Station for the draw. “I don’t know if they’ll all fit but anyone is welcome to come.”

Toilets delight: As a resident of Nelson City and manager of Living Light Candles it is an absolute delight to see the hard work and creativity of the volunteers come to fruition with the completed toilet block. I was amazed at the mosaic work in the ladies (didn't venture into the mens) and just love the freshness of the new colours and the feeling of light and vibrancy around the area now. Standing at the back of the City Centre Arcade looking towards the
block makes me smile with it's rainbow effect. Jude Biggs.
Water quality ok? Does anyone drink Nelson tap water? It tastes disgustingly like mud. So I guess I must buy a filter. Can I take the price of this off my rates as it seems a bit rough that I have to pay such a high price to have undrinkable water piped to my house. Graeme O'Brien. Paragliding article: What a great photo you took on the paragliding story it looked really happening, thanks for your time in writing a good article. Kind regards, Nick Taber.

Bring it on! The holidays are a tad too long. Kristyn Musson. These holidays have gone too fast and the weather has been rubbish, I love the holidays with my kids. Michelle Walker. So, so, so happy the holidays are almost over. It's fine when the weather is good because the kids can run around outside, but it's a bit too much when they have to stay inside all day due to rain. Bring on school! (Via text). Car Show cruise: Since the early days of the Nelson Car Show the cruise has been a major feature, and 2014 will be no different! This year the cruise will be held on the evening of the 8th February, meeting at the WOW Museum car park at 6pm. If you've got a cool vehicle then grab your mates and family and bring it out for an evening cruise, finishing with a picnic dinner at Tahuna Beach. If not then find a nice spot somewhere along the cruise route to watch all the great cars and bikes drive by. Nelson Car Show.

Police Buskers back to Nelson’s streets report
with Area Commander
Steve Greally
The first of the students have returned to school this week and by next week everyone will be back so our focus is on keeping those kids safe as they travel to and from school. We have a high visibility policing operation planned to monitor a range of issues and of course speed around schools is at the forefront of that. We’ll also be conducting checkpoints to make sure that drivers are complying with their class of licence. If your teenager is on a restricted licence they can’t give their mates or younger siblings a lift to school. Checkpoints will also be looking to see that younger children are in the required restraints and everyone is belted up. We’ll also be watching out for cell phone use by drivers. The other message I’d like to get out this week is to ask parents to make sure their young children are well supervised on their journey to school if they are walking or cycling. Check the bike helmets are still up to the job and if they’ve been dropped on the ground or suffered any other damage you need to replace them. Parents need to make a good call about when their children are skilled enough to ride a bike to school or cross the street on their own. For goodness sake, please don’t leave that to chance. We want every child to get to and from school safely all year, so I’m hoping this reminder will prompt all parents to have a chat to their children about the potential risks and to take every opportunity to minimise those risks. We don’t want to see a single child injured or worse still killed on our roads so we need all road users to slow down and keep an eye out for kids.
Brought to you by
Don’t forget to carry around some loose change this week, because the buskers are back. The Buskerburgoo Festival takes place on Nelson’s streets every year and it’s back this weekend for four days of action packed, mind blowing international shows featuring awardwinning street performers. The festival is family-focused and free to attend. The shows are at the top of Trafalgar St on Thursday, Friday and Saturday from 10.30am to 2pm. At the church steps on Saturday and Sunday from 6pm and the When Buskers Go Bad R18 Cabaret show is at the Boathouse on Thursday and Friday, at a cost of $30.

GENERATIONS OF NELSON Brought to you by Marsden House
THE WHANGAMOA When the Maungatapu Track was acknowledged to be too steep for a practical road to Marlborough, interest returned to the old Maori track from Happy Valley, over the Whangamoa range. James Mackay
had explored this route as early as 1867, but with Government funding delays it was nine years before a bridle track was formed, and another nine before the route was finally opened as a Nelson to Blenheim coach road.

relieved to find that no matting had been laid.] “How’s that?” he asked after a bit, but it wasn’t big enough. The hole had a “V” shape in the bottom as well. I told him to dig out quite a bit more in the bottom, thus allowing the roots easy access to establish themselves. The fun was just beginning. “Now you drop in a fertiliser tablet in the bottom, cover it with a couple of inches of soil, and then place the plant on top. You want the roots to find the tablet. You don’t place the tablet hard against the roots, because if you do the roots will burn.” He went on with the next plant, while I moved off to do a bit of deadheading, to encourage another flowering. “Is that OK?” he called. “No it isn’t, it’s too close to the other one.” I replied. “And anyway, I’ve changed my mind about where it should go.” There was the hissing sound of a sigh. Quite subtle, but loud enough for me to hear. I acknowledged it, and we carried on. As the morning progressed, Wayne planted some coprosmas for their colourful foliage, which will intensify in the colder months. While all this was going on with quite a bit of chatting, joking and [gentle] bossing on my part, a close neighbour arrived with a plate of welcome watermelon slices A party atmosphere prevailed. Last plant of the morning was a Hibbertia scandens described as an evergreen climber or ground cover. It was my intention to use this plant as a ground cover. Easy to do really. After the plant was placed [expertly by now] the canes were arranged along the garden surface and a few stones placed to keep them secure, so all was accomplished. Wayne packed up his spade and departed. But guess who has been left holding the baby. Me! Newly planted plants require watering. But anyway I am quite happy to do that. The garden is much more pleasant to look at. Even passersby take a glance at it. And next year, glorious next year, [gardeners are always thinking about how much better it will look Next Year]. It will be really lovely. The plants will be established, and won’t require constant care. I am happy. Spring bulbs are available now, and here’s a tip. If you don’t know which part of the bulb is up, and which is down, put the thing on its side and let the bulb sort itself out. It really does know best!

Do you know or remember the song that goes “I’ve got my Captain working for me now”? Well! I had our Landlord working for me, and did I enjoy the experience! It happened like this. Peter and I were sitting quietly and peacefully outside our flat, enjoying the sun, and greeting anyone who passed by, if they wished to say “Hello” to us. And somebody did. With a cheerful wave and a sound “Hello,” he jumped off the low kerbing, and over the garden [which is a big No, No, as far as I’m concerned.] and landed at our door. “I’m Wayne, your landlord.” he announced. I was glad I didn’t yell at him for jumping over the garden! I wouldn’t have anyway, because I don’t like the garden very much. We fell into chatting, as you do, and he mentioned that he didn’t think very highly of the aforementioned garden. I agreed with him. Upon learning that I might know a little bit about plants, he asked my opinion regarding what plants would grow happily there. “I don’t like those two things” he said pointing to a couple of grevilleas that had been neglected over the years. “We might as well have them taken out.” My heart gladdened. I had studiously avoided looking at the plants. They had a pathetic, neglected, pointless look about them. However I was given the task of collecting some suitable plants for the site. “Something colourful, and doesn’t need a lot of care, or water.” was my brief. He would come on Friday morning and see to the planting. And so he did. He started digging holes. Now I was concerned about the condition of the soil, expecting it to have a covering of weed mat under the stones, so I had brought along enough long term fertiliser tablets to add with the planting. [I was

SPORT Nelson’s Highlander to miss pre-season clash Your Community Newspaper
www.shuttersport.co.nz
Shane Christie doesn’t mind being the underdog so he’s felt at home since moving down to the Highlanders. While Tasman won the ITM Cup Championship this year with Shane as captain, they have been underdogs every prior season, and a promotion to the Premiership is likely to see Tasman don that tag again. And it appears the same at the Highlanders where the 28 year old will play his Super Rugby for the next two years, the same length of time he has remaining on his ITM Cup contract. The Highlanders – who have lost a long list of past All Blacks – have been written off again after a disastrous campaign last year. But that suits Shane to a tee. “I don’t mind being an underdog, I’ve done it here with Tasman for a long time so I enjoy it,” he says. “There’s always pressure but at the end of the day we are focussed on getting the most out of our team.” Shane is still recovering from a knee injury he picked up in the Maori All Blacks tour of North America late last year, which has ruled him out of the pre-season game against the Crusaders in
Motueka on February 7. “Hopefully, if things go well I’ll get the last pre-season game. It would have been cool to play in front of the local crowd but it’s alright, my priority is for the season.” Shane, who plays his club rugby for Nelson, was approached to join the Highlanders midway through the season last year. At the time he was contracted to the Crusaders, but with Richie McCaw back from his sabbatical, he felt the opportunities further south would be more beneficial. “[Highlanders coach] Jamie [Joseph] just approached me when we played the Highlanders last year. I had played in the Maoris with him in 2012. I was pretty keen to move though because I wasn’t going to get many opportunities with the Crusaders because I’d be the third string seven.” In Dunedin, he will compete with incumbent openside flanker John Hardie for a starting spot. Tasman Makos lock Joe Wheeler is also in the Highlanders squad for the upcoming season, returning to the franchise after making his Otago debut last year. Tickets for the Crusaders versus Highlanders game can be purchased by visiting www.makos.co.nz.

Falcons player Josh Moffatt celebrates scoring against Team Wellington at Trafalgar Park. Photo: Chris Symes/Shuttersport.
Davor Tavich was “more than happy” to take three points from Sunday’s ASB Youth League match against Team Wellington, as it means his high flying Falcons side have shot to the top of the ASB Youth League standings for the first time this season. The 4-3 win in pouring rain at Trafalgar Park means NZ King Salmon Nelson Marlborough Falcons are the only team to have recorded three wins from the first three games. “It’s yet another win and Wellington is a quality team so to get three points against them is
massive for us,” Davor, the team’s coach says, reflecting on the match. With just one team qualifying out of the conference to reach the ASB Youth League final – where they will play the winner of the northern conference – matches against the league’s top teams are almost considered “must wins”. The Falcons now head to Palmerston North this weekend to face YoungHeart Manawatu. In Sunday's curtain raiser, a Waimea Weekly women's team proved too clinical for a Nelson Weekly side, beating them 3-1 in the friendly.

83 and still winning medals Phillip Rollo Reporter
KArTing: The Jason Richards Grand Prix scheduled for February 8 and 9 has been postponed due to insufficient entry numbers. Competition organisers had hoped to secure 50 drivers but made the call on Monday to delay the event until later in the year.

Jean missed out on competing at the recent South Island Masters Games in Nelson, so made an extra effort to be fit for the TennisNZ Seniors National Tournament. “It had never been here before so it was my aim to get right for it.” Her grandchildren excel at sport, with one in the United States on a football scholarship, but Jean remains the only member of her family actively involved in tennis. “She won a scholarship and went to America for two years. I also have a grandson into the motocross and he just got three firsts in Palmerston
North. They all could take up tennis, they all played when they were younger but they went the other way and that’s okay. I’m quite privileged to have family that are good at sports and I think they’re quite proud of their grandmother too.” Jean already has a list of competitions scheduled in for the next month and plans to keep playing “until my legs will not let me”. “I’ll play until I can’t play. I’m 83 but I just go out there and play to win. I don’t plan on stopping. If I break a leg or some medical thing stops me then I guess I’ll have to size things up but other than that, no.”

cricKET: Wakatu, Stoke-Nayland and Waimea Toi Toi United all chalked up wins in the third round of the Car Company Nelson Cricket one-day competition on Saturday. Wakatu chased down ACOB’s 158 runs in the 44th over at the Botanics. In Motueka, Stoke-Nayland’s 217/9’s was far too much for the home side, who were dismissed for just 127 in the 42nd over. And finally, in Brightwater, WTTU got the better of their local rivals Wanderers. fUnDing: There’s just 5 weeks left to make applications for funding into Sports Nelson Tasman Trust. SpEEDwAY: Nelson’s poor run in the streetstock circles continued at the Zumo New Zealand Championship at the Tahunanui Holiday Park Speedway on the weekend. Just one local driver, Gordon Ingham, reached the finals, but struggled against the country’s top drivers. Gordon’s best finish was an 11th placing in the second heat, but a Did Not Finish in the third heat saw him 14th overall.
Last week’s solutions
Jean Walker doesn’t go out there to lose. Even at 83 years old, the local grandmother remains competitive. “I go out there to win,” she says. “I’m not out there to give them the ball, I put the ball away from them so they have to run and chase it.” Jean was the oldest competitor at the Tennis NZ Seniors National Championship held at the Tasman and Hope Tennis Clubs throughout the weekend, and managed to secure a second placing, winning a silver medal with Fay Rangi in the 75 plus doubles. “I think I was,” Jean quietly confirms when queried about being the oldest. “It’s not a matter of being old though. I believe if you want to play a sport then you just focus on it and play. I don’t play as hard as I could but I still play in competitions, and at least three times a week.” Jean discovered tennis as a 20 year old “lover of sport”. She was living in Invercargill at the time and also played badminton, netball and basketball. “I enjoyed playing tennis because it was outside and it seemed to be the one I enjoyed most.” Having played competitively for a number of years, Jean decided to stop for about a decade, until the lure of tennis brought her back – this time for 50 years. “I’m 83. “I’m very healthy and live a reasonably good life so I think that’s part of it, I don’t know how else to put it,” she says of her longevity. “When you’re well you’re able to play well.”

there’s a putting green and a driving range.” Use of the driving range is just $7 for a bucket of balls and if you return them all there will be a $2 refund. The cost of hiring a club can be discussed. Other facilities at the club include a bar, catering, and the Pro Shop. This year Greenacres Golf Club will celebrate its 75th anniversary at the beginning on February. On Monday February 3, a special green fee of just $7.50 will be offered to non-members, encouraging them to try out Greenacres for the day. “It’s normally $50 for a non-affiliated member, so that is quite a big discount, but we want everyone to come and celebrate the day.” Derrick says the anniversary for the club, which started off on Greenacres Rd as a nine-hole course but was eventually built up to 18 holes, is
a significant milestone and highlights its strong membership base. Greenacres has sprouted several success careers, and although Ryan Chisnall has moved to Australia, he was a Greenacres member, and is currently competing against Australia’s top amateurs. Hamish Campbell, an apprentice professional, moved to Nelson and holds the course record of 62 off the white tees. Teenager Eve Clarke currently plays with a 13 handicap and is hoping to be the next Lydia Ko. Derrick says despite her age she has been doing really well. The sign as you leave the course says “smile, it’s only a game,” so come play a round of golf, there’s nothing to lose. For more information, call Greenacres Golf Club on 544 8420.
