School fights page removed Kate Russell Reporter
kate@nelsonweekly.co.nz
A social media page glorifying school-yard fighting in Nelson has been swiftly removed. The Instagram page ‘nelsonfights._’ was taken down last week with support from Netsafe after local schools were made aware of it, according to John
Maguire, president of the Top of the South Secondary Principals’ Association. The page contained videos of students from local schools fighting each other, with the page encouraging people to “send through any fights/hidings from Nelson”. John says many of the incidents referred to on the page were of a “historical nature” and have been “managed seriously by the
schools and police”. He says, on such occasions the outcome for a student may result in a stand-down or suspension. Principal of Nayland College, Daniel Wilson, says he fully supports the move. “Schools treat this sort of vile and repulsive behaviour extremely seriously. Both the participants and spectators face high levels of disciplinary consequences.”
Nelson’s two intermediate school principals say they were also made aware of the page. “As a school, we are aware of these pages being set up on Instagram and regularly contact the provider to have them shut down,” says Diane Webb, principal of Nelson Intermediate School. Diane says the has been a decline in fighting at NIS. “We take this very seriously and
act accordingly.” Principal of Broadgreen Intermediate, Pete Mitchener, says pages such as nelsonfights._ are “incredibly concerning.” He says shutting the pages down “does nothing” to address the behaviour. “They often just re-create another page with a different name, and

Triumph and tribulation at historic tournament Jonty Dine
The region’s most prestigious hockey tournament returned at the weekend with the Maadi Cup pitting the best of Nelson, Marlborough, Buller and the West Coast against each other in a two day tournament at Saxton Turf. The tournament dates back to 1924 with Nelson winning the inaugural Pope Shield. It has been a long wait for players with the 2020 edition cancelled due to the Coronavirus pandemic, the first time it was not held since the end of World War 2.

John’s advice for parents is to introduce young people to the 10 Principles in the Harmful Digital communications act and to not give children social media until they are 14. He says, if your child is captured in one of these videos as a victim, make sure they are safe and contact the social media platform and ask them to remove it. “Contact Netsafe.org for support and advice and if you believe your child has been harmed, you can also talk to the police. “Keep the lines of communication open with your children. A Nelson woman has pleaded guilty to defrauding four victims through Facebook Marketplace with the promise of an iPhone XR, including an 11-year-old who spent hundreds of dollars for a phone that never came. Pingo Manawaiti, 20, pleaded guilty in Nelson District Court on Monday to four charges of dishonestly using a computer system relating to the iPhone scam, as well as breach of bail and careless driving, relating to a car crash in April. According to the police summary of facts, the iPhone scam began on November 13, 2020, when Manawaiti advertised an iPhone XR for sale for $257.50 on Facebook Marketplace. Once the victim had transferred the $257.50, Manawaiti blocked the user and ceased contact. On December 31, and again on January 1, 2021, she initiated the same scam, advertising the same model iPhone for $305.50. She again waited for payment before blocking the user from the fake Facebook profile. On March 24 Manawaiti ad-

Items removed from Founders after explosives investigation Charles Anderson Journalist
charles@nelsonweekly.co.nz
The Defence Force’s explosive experts removed several items from Founders Heritage Park last week that were thought to contain picric acid. The Defence Force’s Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) unit were at the popular park last Tuesday forcing the evacuation of the area. The park reopened
on Wednesday. A Defence Force spokesperson said a number of items were removed from the park and disposed of safely. “The items recovered were a mix of small glass vials, small tins and medical lint bandages. All had markings indicating picric acid content.” Dried-out picric acid may explode if expose to heat, flame, friction, or shock, and should be treated as an explosive.

Are you stuck for a place to take a rest when walking through the historic Wakapuaka Cemetery? Thanks to the Rotary Club of Nelson West, and a band of the usual plucky volunteers, two benches were installed over several days’ work. Nelson City Council approved the design and location. So, now, people can now take a moment’s rest to enjoy the peaceful setting. Construction took a couple of weekends with concrete mixed by hand and assembly assisted by several club members. The value of the work is estimated at about $3,000, including labour and materials. Pictured are, at back - John Cooper and Dick Carter and in those needing a seat Grant Nunes-Vaz and Alex McKenzie. Police investigating serious assault Jenny Nicholson Police are continuing enquiries after an alleged serious assault in Richmond. According to police, the assault on a 29-year-old woman occurred around 1.30am on Sunday 18 July and they would like to hear from anyone who was in the general area near Cautley and Hunt Streets at that time. Police enquiries include whether there is connection to another incident reported in the Richmond area in June. However, a police spokesperson says it is too early to say if they are connected. The offender is described as tall and of solid build and wearing dark-coloured clothing at the time. “The woman did not require medical attention at the time,” says a police spokesperson. “However, this was an extremely traumatic experience, and she has been offered support through Victim Support services.” Police were carrying out a canvas of all homes in the area and are particularly interested in obtaining any CCTV footage. Police continue to ask that anyone with information which may assist their enquiries get in touch via 105, quoting file number 210720/9908. Information can also be provided anonymously via Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
Wild days on Rocks Rd Staff Reporter Rocks Rd has seen its fair share of drama over the last week with a car flip and wild weather closing the highway for some time. On Sunday, a car flipped onto
its roof and collided with a street light near Magazine Point. Emergency services were alerted to the crash before 1.30pm Sunday. Police say the car rolled and collided with a street light,
causing the light to come down across the road. The sole-occupant sustained moderate injuries. The road reopened just before 3pm. Then, on Monday, SH6 was closed for several hours due to
significant wave height caused by the stormy weather and tide conditions. Metservice issued a heavy rain warning forcing buses to be postponed and heavy vehicles to wait until the road reopened.

Region’s vaccination roll out continues Erin Bradnock More Covid-19 vaccines are being rolled out to an increasing number of Nelsonians, with the health board already achieving 157 per cent of its target. The launch of group four vaccinations is starting from July 28 with a new national booking system going live - online and over the phone at 0800 28 29 26. The first age-band is people aged 60 years and over who will be able to book their vaccinations from July 28. The next age-band is people aged 55 and over and bookings for this age-band will open on August 11. According to the Nelson Marlborough District Health Board, as of July 20, 68,367 doses of the free Pfizer vaccine have been provided to Group 1, 2 and 3 members, achieving 157 percent of the DHB’s target. Group three members are considered to be the most vulnerable to the virus but only 36 percent of the group in the region are fully vaccinated and 51 percent having received their first dose, despite the move to expand vaccination roll outs. The definition of group three is people who are at risk of getting very sick from
Covid-19. This includes those who are either aged 65 or over, have a relevant underlying health condition, are disabled or in a position of caring for a person with a disability, are pregnant, or are an adult in a custodial setting. In a statement to the Nelson Weekly, a DHB spokesperson says they are confident they can continue to supply vaccinations. “We have more than enough vaccine supply and more than enough vaccinators who are ready to vaccinate people.” Māori over the age of 65 are receiving priority access to the Covid-19 vaccine because they are more at risk of developing severe illness if they contract Covid-19. Māori health and wellbeing provider Te Piki Oranga is giving kaumatua and their whānau their Covid-19 vaccines at the Whakatū Marae, 99 Atawhai Drive, on August 5, from 10am. With many kaumātua living in intergenerational households, whānau members over the age of 16 are also eligible to be vaccinated at Te Piki Oranga’s clinics. Te Piki Oranga says that bookings are essential, and to call 0800 ORANGA (0800 672 642) to book a spot.

Collaboration needed for Nelson Marina Jonty Dine Reporter
jonty@nelsonweekly.co.nz
A private investor has proposed a new 240-berth marina for Nelson, but not everyone is on board with MarineWorx’s vision. The company’s proposed development, which includes a hardstand and dry stack facility, is looking to cater to the increasing demand of the area by a range of users from powered and non-powered vessels. Owner Gary Phillips says they have received positive backing by local investors and have consulted with Nelson City Council, Port Nelson Ltd, local iwi, the Department of Conservation and Friends of the Haven. He says would extend out from the end of Akersten St, protected by a floating sea-wall and could even feature a floating apartment block. “We have a long process ahead, involving a resource consent application, so we are unable to say when we will get the development underway.” However, chairman of the Nelson Marina Berthholders association Steve Thomas says, while the pro-
posal is exciting, a collaborative approach is needed to get it done. “We need more berths that’s for sure and the plan looks sound, I only wish everyone was sitting around the council table together.” Steve says there are multiple groups with interests in the marina. “This proposal has come out of left field, in the past twenty years other proposals have died because not everyone was on board, it needs a general consensus.” He says there is huge demand for more berths. “I think the first thing is to make better use of the facilities there now, there is a lot of potential and space within there to provide more berths but it just needs reconfiguration. Steve says he has been working closely with Nelson City Coucil to upgrade facilities as part of the city’s long-term-plan. Nelson City Council group manager community services, Andrew White, says Nelson City Council took over management of the Nelson Marina at the start of this month and the focus is very much on a new master plan for the existing marina and reviewing the current governance model.

Maths teaching career inspires WOW finalist Kate Russell Reporter
kate@nelsonweekly.co.nz
A retired Nelson maths teacher has drawn on her career for inspiration to become a finalist in this year’s World of WearableArt Awards (WOW) Show. Mary Turner is one of three designers from the Nelson Tasman region who are among 102 finalists from 19 countries in the iconic show, which begins on September 30. Mary has been entering the show on and off since 2000, with most of her 16 or so entries making it to the finals. This year is no exception. “It becomes a bit addictive, really,” she says. “I’m not really an arty type of person but I like making stuff and I like the challenge of it.” The rules of the competition don’t allow Mary to describe her piece, but she says there is “a hint of maths” in the creation, which will feature in a new architecture sec-

She moved to Nelson from Christchurch in 1982 and attended the “very early days” of the show. “In the days when it was in Nelson there were always lots of local groups who were involved. Then one year I thought, ‘I can do this’. “It blows you away - it’s like a visual feast that feeds your energy.” The World of WearableArts Show runs from September 30 - October 17 in Wellington with an audience of 60,000 people expected to attend. The finalist designers will vie for awards and prizes across three recurring sections - Aotearoa, avant-garde and open, as well as three new sections - architecture, Elizabethan era and monochromatic.
Old recipes evoke precious memories Jenny Nicholson Franck Sivignon’s love of food began as a child with long family meals around the table in France. He remembers the special celebration on 2 February when French families got together to cook crepes. He still has his grandmother’s recipe and continued the tradition while he was in France. “The fun for kids was cooking them in the fry pan and flipping them in the air,”
he says. “Then mum or the dog cleaned up.” The Richmond Library is celebrating Family History Month this August, creating a display of traditional family recipes. Members of the community are invited to bring in a copy of a traditional family recipe along with a sentence or two about why the meal is meaningful to their family. These will be displayed from 10 to 31 August. “So many stories are cre-
ated and shared around mealtimes, so this display is a wonderful way of capturing those family memories in a fun and relatable way,” says community engagement and outreach specialist, Lucy Carver. Franck now manages the café at the Richmond Library, but he still looks back to those days of his childhood when meals lasted two or three hours. Marguerite van Geldermalsen and her family planting a tree in memory of her mum, Janny. Photo: Supplied.
Planting trees to keep memories alive Jo Kent When Marguerite van Geldermalsen’s father told her about an invitation to plant a memorial tree for her mother, they thought it was a lovely idea. After all, her mum, Janny, died last year. “It’s such a nice way to remember people and so lovely that the funeral home offers this opportu-
nity,” Marguerite says. Craig Mills, operations manager for Waimea Richmond Funeral Services, says that they run the event every July as a thank you to the families who have used their service within the 12 months. “It’s a way to give back to grieving families and gives them something to visit and remember their loved ones by.”
“
We hope it brings comfort to those who need it. Francis Day
“
On a crisp and sunny Saturday, Marguerite, her father, son and two grandchildren donned warm jackets and headed to Saxton Field for the ceremony. The event
was attended by 70 people and 120 trees were planted, including kahikatea, matai, totara and titoki - all in memory of loved ones. Owner of the funeral home, Francis Day, says the event was extra special this year. “It was actually the 25th anniversary of our memorial tree planting day.” He says that after planting, for
around an hour, the families went back to the funeral home on Champion Road for refreshments and reflection. “Everyone needed a warm drink after that.” Many of the families took notes of the location of their special tree so they could follow its progress. “We hope it brings comfort to those who need it,” Francis says.

Your Voice RSV runs rampant in Nelson: I commend the hospital for moving treatments for at-risk kids into outpatient facilities where possible, rather than exposing them to the wards. Rachel Gordon We went to get tested and were told not to worry as Nelson aren’t currently testing for RSV. We’ve been sick for 14 days of hell. Sarah Evelyn Me and my two kids are coming up on our third week of hell. They were happy to shove the old Covid test up my nose but didn’t want to check for RSV. They would only give me antibiotics, not my kids, and they are just as bad as I am. It made me so furious so I’ve booked a GP appointment instead to hopefully get them antibiotics from my doctor instead of through the hospital. Brodie Whitlock Yet again the healthcare industry doesn’t tell you about building immune systems
or about vitamins or minerals to help with winter coughs and colds. There are so many great natural remedies to use when you are ill. Frances Minogue
My three-week-old baby has been in hospital for six nights because of RSV he caught from his two-year-old old brother. He is breastfed but sometimes they do need extra medical help. Kylie Edwards I currently have a sick 10-week-old and can't get an appointment to see a doctor. Tina Lissant-Clayton Yip, it’s definitely been quiet at work. Bethany Neilson Why do so many go out when they are sick? I work and am now off work due to so many coming in coughing and sneezing when they should be at home getting better and keeping warm. Karina Tasker Might want to be more careful about park germs and stuff. Zara Alice Deans

COMMENT OF THE WEEK
Well done, lovely ladies you have a heart of gold. Allison Walker Neilson Nelson’s Lost Projects: Next steps for the city centre: All of these are useless without affordable housing and decent jobs. Why stay in Nelson being young, bored, and poor when there are better places to move to? Sergey Ratakhin Many of these so-called 'lost ideas' are more than likely the main route to city bankruptcy. Chris Roberts All those car sales yards on prime real estate for inner city living … why do we need 13 car sales yards within walking distance of each other in the CBD? Frances Minogue
Making Nelson a destination for tourists again would be great. A new improved city centre would be amazing. Nelson has always had a great feel. However, it looks tired and a bit dull now. It needs a reboot going forward. - Janine Hannan
My suggestion for improving the city centre is to get rid of our woke aligned councillors and replace them with people who understand what it means to be a representative of the people. Chris Harvey Olympic legend passes away: We have wonderful memories of Ngaire and her extended family from Trinity Church. We give thanks for all the good seeds that she and her family sowed into the lives of so many. Hamish Kirk
R.I.P, wonderful lady. Ivina Smout A most delightful and elegant lady for whom I had total respect. I'm sad at her passing. Peter Glausiuss Quinnys Bush swimming hole destroyed in floodwaters: Very sad to learn of this. I hope something of this icon of our region can be restored. Dennis Goodman That is so gutting for Quinneys. Sorry to hear that. Sue Leov-Brunwin My boys have been coming to Quinneys for many years and they are sad to see the devastation. Keep safe. Sarah Haydon So sad. They need a Givealittle page so we can help out. Fiona Harris Such sad news for this wonderful place. Hope they can come out of this. Audrey Morrison

Toby Skilton thought up the idea for Mutu while sofa surfing on his OE. Photo: Supplied.
Trying to make sharing simple Jo Kent
like power drills can often have under 20 minutes of use over their whole lifetime, says Toby. So, it makes sense to encourage a culture of sharing within communities. Popularity changes according to the season and right now, items such as ski wear and equipment are golden ticket items, while in summer, lawnmowers and gardening tools are hot property. The idea works best when it’s just something you need for a one-off, as Paula Godfrey from Christchurch confirms. She was doing some gibbing a few weeks back and needed a little inthe-corner sander. “They’re like $80 to buy new. There was literally no point in doing that so we were able to find one on Mutu,” she says. Although Mutu is fairly new on the scene, it has already been voted a finalist at the Sustainable Business 2020 Awards. Toby says he’s excited to see what impact Mutu has across Nelson Tasman. “We’re so grateful to those who have already joined us on our journey to buy less, share more and reduce waste in New Zealand.”
‘Why buy when you can borrow?’ is the mantra behind a new rental platform called Mutu, which is launching in Nelson this week. Entrepreneur Toby Skilton has taken the idea of Facebook Marketplace and Trade Me a step further by allowing users to rent rather than buy listed items. People can make money by sharing the things they own and hardly use, as well as being able to save money borrowing things they only need to use a handful of times. “We are all becoming more conscious of the things we buy and our individual impact on the planet,” says Toby. “Mutu allows Kiwis to access things without ownership while reducing the need for items to be purchased for single use.” Mutu has previously been limited to users who have downloaded the Christchurch-based app, but the launch of the website is expected to increase access to hundreds of underutilised items for Kiwis across our region. The most popular rental item so far has been trailers, followed by kayaks and water blasters. Items

Floods destroys Quinneys swimming hole Jenny Nicholson The popular swimming hole at Quinneys Bush will look a lot different after this month’s floods. While floods are not unusual, Andrew Quinney says the sheer force of this flood eroded the land more than any he can remember. “We are fortunate it happened over winter when we are closed,” he says. “We use this time for maintenance and rebuilding.” For the past few years Mark Quinney had been building a slide down to the swimming hole. The flood destroyed the slide, its structure and 20-tonne concrete foundation that took several years to build. It also destroyed the raft, and the new diving platform which hadn’t even been used. “It was looking really good,” says Andrew. “It’s a bit gutting, especially for dad who has worked hard on it.” A Facebook post from the family last week said: “It is with great sadness that we must inform all our wonderful guests that the popular swimming hole known here as Quinneys’ Lake is no more”. According to staff, the slide has been spotted down at Kohatu. The slide structure, including the concrete foundation, remains destroyed in what is now the middle of the river. The diving platform will be somewhere downstream, and ‘Mark’s Ark’ could be anywhere between here and Motueka. Debris will be retrieved as soon as the river has dropped to a safe level. Andrew says they will definitely have a swimming hole this summer. They have consent to dig it out each year but won’t know how that will look until the river goes down. The slide is not salvageable. They are looking at options including a lake inland away from the course of the river, but this is currently just an idea. Although gravel on the roads washed away, the rest of the camp fared better with no water getting into the toilet block, cabins, or sheds.

Virtual CFOs can transform your business Johnston Associates is a company which is different from most accountancy firms in that it specialises in a broad range of areas. For starters, their specialist Business Consulting Division offers its clients the services of Virtual CFOs (Chief Financial Officers) to any sized business. “If you have problems with debt collection, creditors, cashflow, supply or terms, we can work remotely, and come into your office one day a month, one day a week or one day a year, just to offer particular services,” says Associate, Matt Stringer. “Your virtual CFO will work on your business rather than in your business and they can help to guide and train and coach you.” Matt says his values around coaching clients is that you can have better conversations, talk about the bigger picture stuff, and make good decisions on the business going forward, rather than working on the ‘now’ and ‘what happened yesterday.’
“That’s what we emphasize and coach,” says Matt. “I have one client who I’ve been working with for 8 years and to see her grow into someone who is confident in what she can do and achieve herself is really great. She wasn’t like that 8 years ago, so that’s our reward, providing the virtual CFO for a client that greatly benefits from this service.” Johnston Associates also offers ‘succession planning’ which asks the hard questions. Why are you in business? How are you going to get out of the business? How are you going to shape your business to work? “We can help you plan for the future of your business,” says Matt. With the recent law changes around trusts, the experienced team at Johnston Associates provides professional trustee services. “This is to ensure that the trusts are being administered properly and that they will hold up in a court of law if they

Did you know that Johnston Associates is the only chartered accountant firm outside of Auckland to have a recognised professional accounting valuer? Julian Stilwell is a Chartered Accountant and the Advisory Team Manager at Johnston Associates, who has over 20 years Public Practise Accounting experience with a particular focus on: Business and Corporate advisory; Forecast Financial Modelling and Planning; Valuation of Businesses and Equity Interests; Merger, Acquisition and Due Diligence Support; and Management and Financial Reporting. Julian also has Specialist Valuations expertise including valuation of business and equity interests for restructuring, acquisition and sale or relationship property separation. Julian also specialises in the
valuing of equity interests for commercial and shareholder disputes. Another area the firm is looking into, is around sustainability and carbon neutral trading. “We want to understand the impacts of us as an organisation and how that impacts our clients,” says Matt. “So, we are starting to think about that now which all comes back to planning.” Johnston Associates has a 10-15 year plan of where they want to get to, and they want their clients to follow, with regards to carbon emissions and trading and how you can become carbon neutral. “We are starting that journey ourselves; we are forward thinking, and we want you to come with us.” Johnston Associates has offices throughout the Top of the South. Colleges go back to the 80s Kate Russell Reporter

Get your Walkmans, leg warmers and acid-wash jeans ready, because Nelson’s two city colleges are going back to the 80’s in their combined junior production. There are 24 year nine and 10 students from Nelson College and Nelson College for Girls performing in Back to the 80’s - The Totally Awesome Musical from August 2 - 4. Written by Neil Gooding, it tells the story of the 1989 graduating class of William Ocean High. The show is a non-stop collection of 80’s music, movie tributes and hip dance moves featuring iconic songs from the decade including ‘Video Killed the Radio Star’, ‘Love Shack’, ‘Footloose’, and ‘Girls Just Want to Have Fun’. Director and Nelson College English and drama teacher Denise Moran says it’s the first time the schools have performed a junior musical.

Collingwood crowned SpORtS division two champions After 100 minutes of gruelling warfare, Collingwood and Stoke could not be separated in the division two final on Saturday. The scoreboard was locked up at 3-all at the end of regulation time and an even an extra 20 minutes could not produce a result. With a stalemate called, Collingwood was declared champions due to winning the previous encounter between the teams earlier in the season. Collingwood coach Graeme Miller has been through the rules enough times over the years to know a draw would be enough for the title. “It was a bit nerve-racking but definitely relief and excite-

ment at the end, we have had a good season only dropping one game.” Graeme says the win was great reward for the team’s loyal fans. “It’s good for the whole area, we are a community-based club and had close to 1000 people at the game. We get good backing.” He says the club has been lucky to maintain a quality
core of players over the last decade. “The same crew has stuck around and that’s how you build up a championship team.” Delayed a week after the July 17 storm saw Collingwood recreational grounds underwater and Stoke unable to travel over the Takaka Hill. A penalty each in the first half would be the only scoring plays of the final. “It was a pretty tight battle and went from one length of the field to the other.” Graeme says his side tackled their hearts out. “Our defence was incredible, we probably missed a couple of opportunities but it was a really good defensive game.”

Tasman star Andrew Knewstubb kicked off his Olympic campaign with the opening try for the All Black Sevens team in its first game against South Korea on Monday afternoon. New Zealand won the game 50-5 with Wanderers’ Tone Ng Shiu also getting on the scoreboard. Nelson cyclist George Bennett finished in 26th in the men’s road race in Tokyo, six minutes and 20 seconds behind winner Ecuadorian Richard Carapaz. Brook Robertson of the Nelson Rowing Club is into the semi-finals of the men’s coxless pairs with Stephen Jones after -lacing third placing in their heat behind winners Australia and Italy. Their race is at 3pm this afternoon. Callan Elliot’s Olywhites kicked off their Olympic
bid with an upset win over South Korea before going down to Honduras 3-2. Former Waimea College student Kelsey Smith scored the opening goal for the Black Sticks in their 3-0 upset win Argentina on Sunday.
Rugby
Nelson College defeated St Thomas 29-24 in Christchurch on Saturday to leap to third place on the points table with a game in hand. The side faced a quick turnaround as they met Timaru Boys in Nelson yesterday afternoon and will host Ashburton on Saturday. Nelson’s only loss of the campaign to date came at the hands of Marlborough Boys courtesy of a last gasp intercept try. The Tasman Mako women’s team got their Farah Palmer Cup championship campaign off to a promising start at the weekend, fighting hard before going down 35-32 to North Harbour in Albany.

Triumph and tribulation at historic tournament Jonty Dine The region’s best hockey players were on show over the weekend as teams descended on Saxton Turf to battle it out as part of a historic tournament. Success was shared across the board with three region’s winning silverware, hosts Nelson taking home the Gladstone Cup in a dominant campaign. Nelson defeated Buller and Marlborough 5-0 and 5-1 respectively, before winning its toughest test against West Coast 1-0 to claim the title. In the Maadi Cup, Nelson was looking to emulate its historic run of 2002-06 with five titles in a row but fell short with eventual champions West Coast defeating Marlborough 3-2, Nelson 5-4 and hammering Buller 8-2. Nelson managed a draw against Pope Shield champions Marlborough, but goal differential saw the shield head over the Whangamoas for 2021. Photos: Shuttersport.
Tips to save energy and money this winter It’s surprising how even the smallest changes can result in worthwhile savings.
The EECA Energywise website has lots of tips for reducing your electricity use and costs. Here are just some of them. Around 30% of the energy used by the average household flows into hot water: z Wash your clothes in cold water, and wash full loads rather than several smaller loads when possible - a hot water wash can use 10 times more electricity than a cold wash. z Shower rather than bath – it typically uses only half as much water and energy. z A modern dishwasher on a full cycle uses about 15 litres of water – far less than washing the same amount of dishes in the sink. Dry your clothes with free energy from nature: z When possible dry your washing outside. If you’re going to use your dryer regularly, look for a model with an autosensing feature – this prevents over-drying which saves electricity and is also better for your clothes. z Give clothes a good spin in the washing machine – it takes a lot less electricity to spin water out of clothes than it does to heat it out. z Make sure your dryer is vented to the outside so the moisture doesn’t make the house damp and harder to heat. LED lighting: z Switch to LED bulbs for lighting. They use up to 85% less electricity than traditional incandescent or halogen bulbs.
Simple changes to the way you use electricity can save you a lot of money.

Late goal sees Suburbs salvage draw Jonty Dine
Nelson Suburbs appeared destined to leave a sodden Saxton Field without a competition point against Christchurch United on Sunday. The hosts were trailing 1-0 deep into injury time in its opening match of the Southern League before a contentious foul on striker Carl Connor-McClean gave Jordan Yong a chance to square it. “I had already made my mind up straight away where I was going to put the ball and I think that helps with confidence stepping up to take it.”
Jordan slotted the penalty to ensure the sides would share the points. “We deserved to get a point as the whole team worked so hard from minute one right through to the end of the game in terrible conditions.” Jordan says the team has developed a culture of playing right until the final whistle. “That’s what we did again on Sunday and got something out of the game through hard work and a never-give-up attitude.” Meanwhile, in local division one action Richmond is closing in on Rangers and FC Nelson at the top of the table
after defeating Suburbs Development 3-1 on Saturday. Elsewhere, FC Nelson stunned front-runners Rangers with an eye-popping 4-0 victory at Guppy Park. The result puts both teams on 24 points with just a five-goal differential keeping the men from Blenheim on top of the table. Tahuna held off FC Locomotive 2-0 while Motueka handed the winless Golden Bay a 4-0 defeat in Takaka. William Gilmour (Bill)
Patricia eleanor
Unexpectedly, but peacefully, at Nelson Hospital on 18th July, 2021, aged 86 years. Dearly beloved husband and best friend of wife, Margaret, and loved and respected father of Scott, Mark, Catherine and their families in Australia. To honour Bill’s wishes, a private cremation has taken place. A kind and gentle man with a spontaneous sense of humour, he will be sadly missed by many. Now gone to be with his Lord.
You are sadly missed ‘Sweetheart’ by your loving husband John, as it was a very short 3 years of marriage for us both. Also loved mum of Tracey & Brian Cooke, Kent & Helene Smith and loved Nana of Krystle, Luke and Olivia-Rose. You will always be in our thoughts.
