Parking charges, cycle lanes and a possible new bypass are coming to Richmond as part of a Tasman District Council and Waka Kotahi NZ Transport initiative. The ‘Richmond Transport Busi-
fastest growing urban areas in the region, if not the country. “We need to take account of the transportation choices available to people in planning for denser communities,” he says. The plans are forecast over the next 30 years with short, medium and long-term changes proposed. Some of the short-term changes
include parking fees in the town centre and cycle lanes on Hill Street, Champion Road, Wensley Road, Queen Street, Hart Road and Salisbury Road. Creating the cycle lanes will mean some on-street parking may need to be removed. A new 30kmh speed limit zone will be introduced between Ox-
ford Street, Talbot Street, Salisbury Road and Gladstone Road. Waka Kotahi director of regional relationships, Emma Speight, says the PBC is an important step towards helping address current and future transport issues within and around Richmond.

New owners for Weekly
There’s been a few changes at your local newspaper, with some new owners and a new location, but don’t expect many changes with the paper itself. Waimea Weekly was founded in 2005 by Richmond couple Steve Page and Jenny Bates. In the 16 years since they’ve grown the paper to be the largest circulating in the region and the favourite medium for local advertisers. In 2010 they launched Nelson Weekly with Andrew and Sarah Board, who later took full ownership of the Nelson paper in 2016. Now Andrew and Sarah have bought a majority stake in the Waimea Weekly and merged offices with the Nelson team into a new Stoke location. Andrew, who has taken over as managing director, says it is an exciting move for the
papers but readers shouldn’t expect too many changes. “The Waimea Weekly has grown a really Andrew strong followBoard ing because it’s stuck to the principles of covering hyper-local news really well, that won’t change, if anything it will expand.” The new office is located at 563 Main Road Stoke, in the old Stoke Post Office building. Andrew says bringing the teams from Nelson and Waimea together will help make a better product for both regions. “Stoke was the natural place because it just ten minutes to Richmond and ten minutes to Nelson, there we can plan better, collaborate more and this will make a better product.
For folk in Richmond wanting to come and see us, we’d love for you to pop into the new office and see some familiar faces. And if you’re after an extra copy of the paper you can find one outside Bayleys on Queen St or at the Village Café.” Andrew and Sarah are no strangers to the Waimea Weekly or the region, Andrew grew up in Brightwater and started as a reporter at the Waimea Weekly in 2006 and couple live in Hope with their five year old son. Steve and Jenny say they are rapt with the change and both Sarah and Andrew are better equipped to take the paper to the next level. “Although still involved, Jenny and I would like to acknowledge the support of a lot of great local retailers, most have been with the Waimea Weekly since day one,” Steve says.
Possible bypass for Richmond from PAGE 1 “In recent years we have seen an increase in the amount of traffic and businesses using local roads within Richmond and an increase in commercial vehicles passing through to Nelson and freight going to the Port.” The PBC looks to address these issues, while ensuring the cycling and walking paths, roads, and public transport can deal with this growth. Council says it’s also a step towards getting funding for the projects and ensuring that the right transport solutions are identified. Proposed improvements in the central Richmond area will extend along the Waimea Plains from Wairoa River to the south, Waimea River to the north and Champion Road to the east. A large area also extends out as far as Wakefield. Medium-term plans include a bus terminal on Lower Queen Street with park and ride options for surrounding areas; and longer-term plans will

see a new car park building for the town centre and a possible bypass. If a bypass is needed, Gladstone Road would become a local road, not a state highway, and cycle lanes could be added. Before finalising the long-term programme, the short and mediumterm solutions will be reviewed. If further improvements are needed, a business case will be undertaken to investigate whether the bypass is needed. The community is being encouraged to give feedback on the plans. Have your say online or at the drop-in sessions. Feedback is open until 5pm on Friday 13 August, and Emma says she encourages everyone who lives, works and travels through the area to comment over the next four weeks. “We are looking forward to hearing from the community to see what they think about what we are proposing,” she says. Police are continuing enquiries after an alleged serious assault in Richmond. According to police, the assault on a 29-year-old woman occurred around 1.30 am on Sunday 18 July and they would like to hear from anyone who was in the general area near Cautley and Hunt Streets at that time. Police enquiries include whether there is connection to another incident reported in the Richmond area in June. However, a police spokesperson says it is too early to say if they are connected. The offender is described as tall and of solid build and wearing dark-coloured clothing at the time.

The popular swimming hole at Quinneys Bush will look a lot different after this month’s floods. While floods are not unusual, Andrew Quinney says the sheer force of this flood eroded the land more than any he can remember. “We are fortunate it happened over winter when we are closed,” he says. “We use this time for maintenance and rebuilding.”
For the past few years Mark Quinney had been building a slide down to the swimming hole. The flood destroyed the slide, its structure and 20-tonne concrete foundation that took several years to build. It also destroyed the raft, and the new diving platform which hadn’t even been used. “It was looking really good,” says Andrew. “It’s a bit gutting, especially for dad who has worked hard on it.” A Facebook post from the family last week said: “It is with great sadness that we must inform all our won-
derful guests that the popular swimming hole known here as Quinneys’ Lake is no more”. According to staff, the slide has been spotted down at Kohatu. The slide structure, including the concrete foundation, remains destroyed in what is now the middle of the river. The diving platform will be somewhere downstream, and ‘Mark’s Ark’ could be anywhere between here and Motueka. Debris will be retrieved as soon as the river has dropped to a safe level.
Andrew says they will definitely have a swimming hole this summer. They have consent to dig it out each year but won’t know how that will look until the river goes down. The slide is not salvageable. They are looking at options including a lake inland away from the course of the river, but this is currently just an idea. Although gravel on the roads washed away, the rest of the camp fared better with no water getting into the toilet block, cabins, or sheds.

Trying to make sharing simple Jo Kent Reporter
jo@waimeaweekly.co.nz
‘Why buy when you can borrow?’ is the mantra behind a new rental platform launching in Nelson Tasman tomorrow. Entrepreneur Toby Skilton has taken the idea of Facebook Marketplace and Trade Me a step further by allowing users to rent rather than buy listed items. People can make money by sharing the things they own and hardly use, as well as being able to save money borrowing things they only need to use a handful of times. “We are all becoming more conscious of the things we buy and our individual impact on the planet,” says Toby. “Mutu allows Kiwis to access things without ownership while reducing the need for items to be purchased for single use.” Mutu has previously been limited to users who have downloaded the Christchurch-based app, but the launch of the website is expected to increase access to hundreds of underutilised items for Kiwis across our region. The most popular rental item so far has been trailers, followed by kayaks and water blasters. Items like power drills can often have under 20 minutes of use over their whole lifetime, says Toby. So it makes sense to encourage a culture of sharing within communities. Popularity changes according to season and, right now, items such as ski wear and equipment are golden ticket items, while in summer

lawnmowers and gardening tools are hot property. Although Mutu is fairly new on the scene, it has already been voted a finalist at the Sustainable Business 2020 Awards. Toby says he’s excited to see what impact Mutu has across Nelson Tasman. “We’re so grateful to those who have already joined us on our journey to buy less, share more and reduce waste in New Zealand.” Toby Skilton thought up the idea while sofa surfing on his OE. Franck Sivignon’s love of food began as a child with long family meals around the table in France. He remembers the special celebration on 2 February where French families got together to cook crepes. He still has his grandmother’s recipe and continued the tradition while he was in France. “The fun for kids was cooking them in the fry pan and flipping them in the air,” he says. “Then mum or the dog cleaned up.” Richmond Library is celebrating Family History Month this August, creating a display of traditional family recipes. Members of the community are invited to bring in a copy of a traditional family recipe along with a sentence or two about why the meal is meaningful to the family. These will be displayed from 10 to 31 August. “So many stories are created and shared around mealtimes, so this display is a wonderful way of capturing those family memories in a fun and relatable way,”
French crêpe recipe Makes about 15 crêpes Ingredients • 300g flour • 3 tbsp sugar • 2 tbsp oil • 60 ml milk • 3 whole eggs • 5 ml rum (optional) Franck Sivignon, who works in the Richmond Library café, talks about the memories evoked from family recipes and meals around the table. Photo: Jenny Nicholson. says community engagement and outreach specialist, Lucy Carver. Franck now manages the café at the Richmond library. But he still looks back to those days of his childhood when meals lasted two or three hours. With entrée, mains, cheese then dessert followed by coffee and brandy, he says they were so full they couldn’t move after the meal.
Other events taking place this month include Introduction to Ancestry at 10am to 12pm on Thursday 12 August and the regular Family History Friday, a monthly drop-in session for exploring family history. For more information, and to book your spot in the Ancestry.com workshop, contact Richmond Library, phone 03 543 8500.
• 50g butter, melted Method 1. Sift the flour into a bowl and form a well. 2. Add the eggs, sugar, oil and butter 3. Mix with a whisk, slowly adding the milk 4. Flavour with rum 5. Cook the crêpes on a low heat on each side in a non-stick pan. Voilà, bon appétit!

Planting trees to keep memories alive Jo Kent Reporter
jo@waimeaweekly.co.nz
When Marguerite van Geldermalsen’s father told her about an invitation to plant a memorial tree for her mother, they thought it was a lovely idea. After all, her mum Janny, died last year. “It’s such a nice way to remember people and so lovely that the funeral home offers this opportunity,” Margue-
rite says. Craig Mills, operations manager for Waimea Richmond Funeral Services, says that they run the event every July as a thank you to the families who have used their service within the 12 months. “It’s a way to give back to grieving families and gives them something to visit and remember their loved ones by.” On a crisp and sunny Saturday, Marguerite, her father,
son and two grandchildren donned warm jackets and headed to Saxton Field for the ceremony. The event was attended by 70 people and 120 trees were planted, including kahikatea, matai, totara and titoki - all in memory of loved ones. Owner of the funeral home, Francis Day, says the event was extra special this year. “It was actually the 25th anniversary of our memorial tree planting day.”
He says that after planting, for around an hour, the families went back to the funeral home on Champion Road for refreshments and reflection. “Everyone needed a warm drink after that.” Many of the families took notes of the location of their special tree so they could follow its progress. “We hope it brings comfort to those who need it,” Francis says.

Just a thought... Geoff Clark Spring Grove Church of Christ I’m sure you will have heard many jokes of the genre over the years, some funny, others corny. Like, “The bad news is there is no good news, and the bad news is there is no good news”. You have also heard the phrase “The Gospel truth”. This is usually to attest that something said is true beyond dispute. “Gospel” can also be referred to as “Good news.” The first four books of the New Testament are called “Gospels” and are accounts of the life and teachings of Jesus Christ. Written by four different writers, from differing backgrounds, they give four different perspectives of the man who is at the heart of history. The Old Testament contained many prophecies about the coming of God’s Messiah, or Saviour, and the New Testament gospels confirm these, from the birth of Christ, which was heralded by Angels as “Glad tidings of great joy,” to his ministry on earth, to his death on the cross, and his resurrection. The bad news of the death of Christ on the Cross, was counteracted by the good news of his resurrec-
tion, and the ushering in of what is known as “The Age of Grace”. Before this time mankind’s redemption was reliant on fulfilling the requirements of the ‘Laws of Moses’, including the Ten Commandments. But with the death and resurrection of Christ, this all changed, and as it is written in the fourth gospel, John: “These things are written that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of the God, and that believing you may have life in his name.” Our salvation no longer depends on what we have done for God and fellow people, but upon what Christ has done for us. Of course, the New Testament is not just the gospels. It also contains history, prophecy, and instructions for living, including the promise of eternal life in the presence of God to all who believe. It is a fact that those who attend Church in New Zealand are now much fewer in number than previously, and that many people have never read the Bible. If you are in this category, why not get a New Testament, and read for yourself, with an open mind, this “Good News”? “For God so loved the world, that He gave His own Son” (John 3:16)

Meet the latest addition to the Nelson Marlborough Rescue Helicopter crew. Molly the beagle is 16 weeks old and belongs to Jeff Hughes, a crewperson and intensive care paramedic. “She’s pretty popular with the team at the hangar and provides a bit of stress relief,” says Jeff. “But she doesn’t come on missions with us. I’d like it if we could train her to be a search dog given her breed, but there isn’t much call for civilian search beagles here in Tasman. Well, unless it was for a missing chicken breast or a sock off the clothesline, that is.” Photo: Supplied.

Proudly brought to you by...
Mr Beuke’s long career of public service Graeme K. Tyree Margaretha “Margaret” Emma Bensemann’s husband, Henry Beuke, died in Germany. So Margaretha (1812-91) emigrated, with her sons, Johann Diedrich, 17, Johann Heinrich, 14 and her three young daughters. They arrived at Port Nelson on July 06, 1864, aboard the barque ‘Violet’. Fritz Christian Bruning (1842-1900) was Margaret Beuke’s second husband. He was involved with Lutheran Church activities, ran a small home farm and was called upon to butcher cattle and pigs for neighbours. In processing the animals, he was assisted by his stepson, Johann Diedrich Beuke (1847-1914), who subsequently obtained a slaughterhouse license.
Johann Beuke was generally better educated than most of his compatriots and was of a scholarly disposition. He was also ambitious, believed land ownership was the key to wealth, and purchased as many sections in the NeudorfRosedale district as he could afford. On August 28, 1872, at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Ranzau, Johann Beuke, J.P. wed Wilhelmina “Christina” Carolina Fredericka Lankow (1851-1923), who was born at Hope. As she was the practical farmer, Johann left the day-to-day farm chores to her. An intellectual man, he was involved in village activities, particularly in support of the Lutheran Church. In the wider sphere, he was a member of the Central Board of Edu-
cation, a councillor and onetime chairman of the Waimea County Council. Christina and J.D. Beuke had three children - Amelia Sophie Maria (1875-1946), wed Atherton Herbert Fletcher (1871-1946); Margaretha “Amy” (18761953), wed William Christian Joachim Stade (1873-1940) with no children, and Henry “Harry” Conrad Beuke (18821956), who wed Bessie Florence Johnson (1876-1953) on February 28, 1905. Bessie taught at the Neudorf School from 1901-04 and was a foundation member of Moutere Women’s Division of Federated Farmers, and the branch’s first president. Fifty-two Moutere farmers formed a local branch of the ‘New Zealand Farmers’ Union’ in 1901. Mr. J.D. Beuke was
elected first chairman, and Joseph Heine was elected first secretary. Another 26 local farmers joined later. Johann D. Beuke was also a licensee of the Moutere Inn. His son, Harry, followed in his footsteps as a county councillor. In 1909 Johann was celebrated for his public service. That included his work for the Waimea County Council, Nelson Charitable Aid Board, Nelson Licensing Committee, Nelson Education Board, Nelson Harbour Board and Upper Moutere School Committee, among others. At an event run by the council, a gold watch and greenstone pendant was presented to Johann. On the watch was inscribed: “Presented to J.D. Johann Beuke, J.P. (1847-1914), and his Beuke, Esq., by his Moutere wife, Wilhelmina, nee Lankow (1851-1923). Photo: Supplied. friends on his retirement.”

At Cartridge Universe we specialise in inkjet and laser cartridges for your printers and multifunctions. We provide the highest quality ink and toner cartridges in both Genuine and our own Cartridge Universe Brand cartridges. Unlike other retailers, we know the ins and outs of printers and cartridges, how they work and why they don’t work. There are a lot of compatible cartridges out there which have low quality ink and toner or the ink and toner in them is not suited for the printer, so they will damage your printer and give you poor printing results., whereas our inks are specifically formulated to work correctly in your printer. We also provide a full guarantee with all our cartridges. There is no other retailer in the Nelson and Tasman region offering this service and we have been providing this service for over 16 years. At Cartridge Universe we can provide you with the printer or multifunction that will best suit your needs, making sure that your printer will be the most cost-effective for what you are intending to use it for.

Community spirit is never stronger than in the aftermath of a disaster and the recent floods across the Top of the South have brought people together once more. Locals in Brightwater, Wakefield and Richmond have been busy setting up collection points for donations to take to those affected in Westport. More than 2000 residents in a town with a population of 4500 were evacuated from their homes last week with rising river levels meaning people aren’t out of the woods just yet. Melissa Woodhouse, who runs the Wakefield Community Facebook page, says the best way to help people in need is to show kindness. “I set up ‘The Big Bake Up’ Facebook page to initiate food donations as home baking means so much to someone in crisis,” she says. Around 200 containers of baked goods were donated in just two days – each with a handwritten message of support to the recipients on the front. “People baked everything from sultana loaf, Afghans, cakes and gingerbread men,” she says. Once her trailer was full, she set off to deliver the goods to the Buller Emergency Management welfare centre. Mel says they couldn’t thank her enough as many evacuees had been requesting snacks but there wasn’t much to give them. It’s not just food which the community are ral-

Inspired by Mel’s food post, Angela Miller, who lives in Richmond, set up a donation drop-off for toiletries, too. Angela was in Westport at the time of the floods and says seeing the devastation firsthand was terrifying. “I’m not sure people can actually grasp the extent of what has happened down there without actually seeing it in person,” she says. Many of Angela’s friends have had their homes completely flooded. She says, when she saw other people setting up food donations, she thought she’d do something similar with toiletries. “Anything helps those who can’t get back into their homes right now.” Items such as shampoo and conditioner, shower gel, sanitary products and skincare can all be dropped off at Nelson Automotive Solutions at 66 Main Road Hope. She says she is doing a drop this week and will organise another load to be dropped the week after. “It’s going to take a long time for Westport to recover from this.” Follow ‘The Big Bake Up’ page on Facebook for further baking drop dates.

Scavenger hunt winners revealed The Waimea Weekly ran an online scavenger hunt over the holidays. After lots of entries, these are a few of the winners who each receive a prize from a local business.

Giving kids the gift of music Kate Russell A newly-formed trust is giving Nelson kids the gift of music. The Kids Love Music Charitable Trust is funding ‘taster’ music lessons to primary school children with the aim of planting a love of music. Tāhunanui School and Wakefield School are the first to have the lessons offered to them, and there are plans to expand to other schools. Founder Wayne Densem says he started the trust as a “way to give back” while incorporating something he is passionate about. “Music played a big part of my childhood - it kept me on track,
gave me something to focus on and something to achieve.” The trust supports schools by providing instruments and a music tutor - something that many families cannot afford, he says. Trustee Annabel Boyes says it is “fundamental” that all children get the opportunity to learn an instrument. Tāhunanui School principal Barbara Bowen says the trust has allowed her to open music lessons up to every student. Students can learn either the ukulele or piano with a music teacher coming into the school for twoand-a-half hours a week. The lessons are provided to 25 students per term and will be ex-
panded into guitar lessons soon. Wayne says the trust now needs to raise money to keep the lessons going next year. To do this, they are holding a launch party on August 6 at The Boathouse. Tickets are $25, with all proceeds going to the trust. A band made up of Wayne, David Turnhout, Tony Bowater, Richard Butler, and Paul Jeffries will be providing the night’s entertainment. Annabel says they are also in need of donations of unwanted instruments, which can be donated through its Givealittle page. For more information on the launch and how to donate, go to www.kidslovemusic.org.nz

Springer scores three on debut Jonty Dine Reporter
jonty@nelsonweekly.co.nz jonty@nelsonweekly.co.nz
Coby Springer only joined the Waimea Combined 1st XV following some persuasion from his friends. He finally made his debut against Roncalli on Saturday and made an immediate impression, scoring three stunning tries. “The boys wanted me to come join and have always been saying ‘come play, come play.’ They finally got me into it, now I’m here.” Combining power and pace, Coby looked right at home on the wing and was threatening every time he touched the ball as his side romped home 49-26. “It was pretty nice, a pretty good debut.” Waimea was guided by a masterclass performance from first five Alex Honey who scored 19 points in a dominant display.
A charge down led to the first try for number 8 Callum Stuart as Waimea enjoyed all the early momentum. The second came soon after when Honey exploded through only to be brought down a metre short of the line, however he off-loaded on the deck to halfback Tony Sproul as Waimea took an early 14-0 lead. Honey then sent Springer down the right flank who broke through three tackles on his way to the line. Waimea struck again moments later on the other wing as Honey made another scything break and sent Dan Hawley away for the bonus point try. Roncalli eventually cracked the stubborn Waimea defence to score its first try right on halftime, but Waimea kicked off the scoring in the second after just one minute, Springer finishing off a beautiful set piece move.

Waimea responded through another piece of individual brilliance from Honey, this time showing he has power as well as pace as he muscled his way through three would-be tacklers to score under the sticks. Honey’s seventh conversion would be his last act as he walked gingerly from the field following his try. Roncalli’s resilience was rewarded with a bonus point as the visitors had the final say scoring the final two tries, but it had well and truly been Waimea’s day. The victory moves Waimea to third from bottom on the Miles Toyota Championship and they could leapfrog Lincoln with a bonus-point win when the sides meet at Waimea College on Saturday. Scorers: Waimea 49 (Springer 3, Stuart, Sproul, Hawley, Honey, tries, Honey 7 con) Roncalli 26.
Nelson wins Gladstone Cup Jonty Dine The region’s most prestigious hockey tournament returned to Nelson at the weekend. The Maadi Cup pitted the best of Nelson, Marlborough, Buller and the West Coast against each other in a two day tournament at Saxton Turf. The tournament dates back to 1924 with Nelson winning the inaugural Pope Shield. It has been a long wait for players with the 2020 edition cancelled due to the Coronavirus pandemic, the first time it was not held since the end of World War 2. Success was shared across the board
with the three region’s winning silverware, hosts Nelson taking home the Gladstone Cup in a dominant campaign. Nelson defeated Buller and Marlborough 5-0 and 5-1 respectively, before winning its toughest test, against West Coast, 1-0 to claim the title. In the Maadi Cup, Nelson was looking to emulate its historic run of 2002-06 with five titles in a row, but fell short with eventual champions West Coast defeating Marlborough 3-2, Nelson 5-4 and hammering Buller 8-2. Nelson managed a draw against Pope Shield champions Marlborough, but goal differential saw the shield head over the Whangamoas for 2021.

Final whistle blows for Marty Jo Kent
Tips to save energy and money this winter
Reporter
jo@waimeaweekly.co.nz
The final whistle has nearly blown for Marty Davis, sports director at the Wanderers Sports Club in Brightwater. The 69-year-old will be hanging up his boots this Friday after 30 months of service to the club. Destined for a new life in Auckland, he says he has been planning the move for a while. “I’ve built an intergenerational home with my daughter, sonin-law and two granddaughters,” Marty says. “My wife and I will live in one wing, and they’ll live in another.” He says that, while rugby is his passion, transforming the club into a community sports hub has been a rewarding work in progress. “While out walking during lockdown, I noticed just how many people were out there alone,” he says. So, Marty set up a seniors’ movements exercise class at the Wanderers Community Gym and has never looked back. “We started with just five people and now there are 65 over 65s in there each week,” he says. They’ve even had to add an extra session in due to rising class numbers. “Some of them are over 80, so it’s a great way for people to connect.” Looking back as his career as he approaches retirement, Marty says he was lucky to travel over the 20 years he coached professional rugby. “I coached in England, France
It’s surprising how even the smallest changes can result in worthwhile savings.
Wanderers’ Marty Davis is leaving Brightwater behind and moving to Auckland. Photo: Jo Kent. and even helped get rugby on the school curriculum in Luxembourg.” And he says his time at the Wanderers has seen him involved in everything from rugby and cricket to netball and squash. “We have over 800 members. It’s such a great club as we have a real family vibe, and that’s so appealing.” Marty also wrote the weekly Wanderers rugby reports for the Waimea Weekly. Co-owner for the newspaper, Steve Page, says working with Marty over the last few years has been great. “He always put a lot of effort into the job and did it very thoroughly,” says Steve. “It’s never easy doing publicity for a
club such as Wanderers but he did them proud. We wish him all the best in Auckland.” As well as Marty’s departure, other changes are coming. Marty says the biggest one will be the club’s rebranding to the Wanderers Community Sports Club Inc. “We want people to know it’s not just a rugby club. The community can use the facilities and club rooms for whatever they want. Plus, the new turf over at the gym is open to everyone, so come and use it.” The club is hopeful they will get someone just as committed to sports as Marty. If you think you are up to it, send your application to amelia@taycon. co.nz by 30 July.
The EECA Energywise website has lots of tips for reducing your electricity use and costs. Here are just some of them. Around 30% of the energy used by the average household flows into hot water: z Wash your clothes in cold water, and wash full loads rather than several smaller loads when possible - a hot water wash can use 10 times more electricity than a cold wash. z Shower rather than bath – it typically uses only half as much water and energy. z A modern dishwasher on a full cycle uses about 15 litres of water – far less than washing the same amount of dishes in the sink. Dry your clothes with free energy from nature: z When possible dry your washing outside. If you’re going to use your dryer regularly, look for a model with an autosensing feature – this prevents over-drying which saves electricity and is also better for your clothes. z Give clothes a good spin in the washing machine – it takes a lot less electricity to spin water out of clothes than it does to heat it out. z Make sure your dryer is vented to the outside so the moisture doesn’t make the house damp and harder to heat. LED lighting: z Switch to LED bulbs for lighting. They use up to 85% less electricity than traditional incandescent or halogen bulbs.
Simple changes to the way you use electricity can save you a lot of money.

Tasman sisters get taste of netball action Staff Reporter Tasman sisters 12-year-old Summer and 10-year-old Eden Dove got a taste of the action when they met the superstars of netball on centre court at the Trafalgar Centre before the recent Tactix vs Pulse ANZ Premiership game. Summer and Eden, who attend Māpua School, were excited to have won the chance to meet captains Jane Watson (Tactix) and Claire Kersten (Pulse) and lead the teams onto the court as a part of the ANZ Future Captains programme. Eden’s best friend Isla Johnstone joined them courtside as a tenth birthday celebration all three girls will remember forever. Both Summer and Eden agreed that their highlight was high-fiving the play-
ers and joining the captains centre court, where the Tactix won the coin toss. Eden says she felt like she wanted to jump in and join the game. Summer said that she got a really strong high-five from Tactix defender Karin Burger. When the final buzzer went and the Tactix took the win, it was big celebrations all round for Summer and Eden. Eden thought their courtside seats were the best in the house. Both sisters have followed in the footsteps of their mum Anna and play for the Mapua and Districts Netball Club. Their goal is to keep getting the ball in the hoop this season. Summer wants to try this technique after watching Tactix shooter Ellie Bird play.

NEWSLINE UPDATES KE E PING YOU INFORME D ABOUT NEWS AND EVE NTS IN THE TASMAN DISTRICT
Hundreds of Tasman residents used our latest communication tool to receive and share information during the recent widespread storm. The Antenno app was used to share details about flooding, road closures and public safety, while many residents used the app to report issues back to us. But there are still many people who aren’t aware of Antenno and how useful it is. Antenno is a free mobile app that sends you alerts and notifications about places and topics you care about, it even reminds you when your rubbish and recycling days are. There’s no need to check multiple sources of information because Antenno sends details directly to you, so in situations like those we faced recently, information was delivered straight to the phone. You can also engage with us more easily by reporting issues, responding to surveys, and providing feedback through Antenno. Simply open Antenno, go to 'Your reports' and add a report to tell us about what’s happening in your neighbourhood. Antenno is a small lightweight app that won’t take up valuable space on your phone or device. It is simple and easy to use, and it doesn’t require any personal details or even a log in. Download Antenno for free from your phones app store.
Safe disposal of batteries urged after fire A fire at the Tākaka Resource Recovery Centre earlier this month has highlighted the need for people to carefully consider how they dispose of batteries from electronic appliances. The contents of a refuse compaction container caught alight while it was being filled prior to transportation to the landfill. The incident sparked a full emergency response with fire crews from Tākaka and the specialist Hazardous Materials Unit from Nelson. The fire forced the closure of the centre for several hours. While the source of the fire could not be determined, it is suspected it was caused by discarded batteries from electronic equipment or a cellphone. Lithium-ion batteries supply power to many kinds of devices, including smart phones, laptops, e-bikes, scooters, e-cigarettes, smoke alarms, toys and even cars, but if they are not disposed of correctly they can overheat, catch fire, or explode. Dumping old batteries is an increasing problem across the region. All Tasman Resource Recovery Centres are equipped to receive batteries for correct disposal, while old cellphones can be returned to retailers. It is vital that people think about how they get rid of electronic waste and keep batteries out of bins.
Rehome unwanted items with Second Hand Sunday Second Hand Sunday is back on 15 August! It's a fun way for Nelson and Tasman residents to declutter and re-home unwanted household goods for free – anything from chairs, books, clothing or leftover bits and pieces from building projects – and a good chance to scour the region’s streets looking for pre-loved treasures. Register online at tasman.govt.nz/shs to make sure you're on the list of addresses for the day. For those just wanting to fossick – the address list of participants will be published on our website at midday on Friday 13 August.
Stay safe on icy roads this winter Our contractors are out in the early hours every freezing morning spreading grit on the worst affected roads to improve surface conditions. Motorists still need to drive to the conditions though because grit only adds about 15 percent extra traction.
Help us make Richmond's roads safer We are working with Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency on a business case to address Richmond transport needs over the next 30 years. Our focus is on making Richmond a safer and more reliable place to travel around by offering everyone improved transport choices, whether you are driving, walking, cycling or taking a bus. This covers State Highways which are administered by Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency, and local roads which are administered by Tasman District Council. Have your say
The cabin of a car can be 20 degrees on a sub-zero morning, but the car being comfortable doesn’t mean the road is free of ice and drivers can be lulled into a false sense of safety.
Share your feedback online, in person at one of our drop-in sessions or pick up a feedback form from the Richmond Council Office or Library and post it back through the Freepost address.
Ice can remain on roads all day especially in areas shaded by high banks and tall trees. These roads freeze sooner and may not thaw during the day.
Feedback closes 13 August 2021. To find out more and have your say visit nzta.govt.nz/richmondpbc
Here are some suggestions for safer winter driving.
Attend a drop-in community event:
• Grit itself can be very slippery and can be a big risk to a vehicles traction, especially motorcycles.
• Thursday 29 July, 4.00 pm – 8.00 pm, Waimea College
• The best way to navigate wet roads where ice could form is to slow down, drive to the conditions and not rely on grit to provide traction.
• Tuesday 3 August, 9.30 am – 4.00 pm, Richmond Library
• Avoid sudden braking or turning movements that could cause you to skid. • For vehicles without anti-skid braking systems, to avoid skidding or sliding, pump the brake pedal in short rapid bursts rather than pressing long and hard.
• Saturday 31 July, 9.00 am – 2.00 pm, Richmond Mall
• Saturday 7 August, 9.00 am – 2.00 pm, Connings Food Market
COUNCIL HUI
• Drive at a safe travelling distance because it takes longer to stop on slippery roads. In winter, especially in poor weather, double the two-second rule and leave a safe distance between you and the car you are following.
Unless otherwise stated, all meetings will be held at Council Chambers, 189 Queen Street, Richmond. Access to meetings will continue to be available via Zoom video conferencing for those who are unable to attend in person. See tasman.govt.nz/meetings-calendar for details.
Register your dogs now
Regulatory Committee Thursday 29 July, 9.30 am. Public forum.
Last chance to register your dogs before penalty fees kick in this Saturday, 31 July 2021. You can register your dog online, in person or by mail. Visit tasman.govt.nz/dog-registration.
Recycle your old car seats Did you know your child’s old car seat can be repurposed? Every year thousands of old or out of date children’s car seats are dumped in New Zealand, but in Tasman we have come up with a solution to divert them away from landfill. We are part of the SeatSmart programme and subsidise the cost of recycling unwanted children’s car seats. The usual price for getting rid of a seat is $25, but with our Council subsidy people pay only $10 when the seats are returned to our recycling partner Baby on the Move Nelson. Contact Baby on the Move Nelson for more information. You can find them on Facebook or email nelson@babyonthemove.co.nz.

You are sadly missed ‘Sweetheart’ by your loving husband John, as it was a very short 3 years of marriage for us both. Also loved mum of Tracey & Brian Cooke, Kent & Helene Smith and loved Nana of Krystle, Luke and Olivia-Rose. You will always be in our thoughts.
Unexpectedly, but peacefully, at Nelson Hospital on 18th July, 2021, aged 86 years. Dearly beloved husband and best friend of wife, Margaret, and loved and respected father of Scott, Mark, Catherine and their families in Australia. To honour Bill’s wishes, a private cremation has taken place. A kind and gentle man with a spontaneous sense of humour, he will be sadly missed by many. Now gone to be with his Lord.
