Airport extension won’t fly Calls for Jetstar to start flying to and from Nelson have been grounded. Last week a Facebook page was set up to encourage budget airline Jetstar to fly into Nelson. The page has attracted hundreds of fans but Jetstar says it will not be able to fly into the top of the south unless the runway is extended to cater for its jet aeroplanes. The current length of the Nelson Airport runway is 1347 metres. The kind of planes that Jetstar fly in New Zealand need a minimum length of around 1600 metres. The airline does have planes in Australia that could land in Nelson but it does not want to take them off those routes and move them across the Tasman. Lengthening the runway could cost up to $60 million for the ratepayerowned airport and is only one major stumbling block for the move.

Nelson Airport Ltd chief executive Kaye McNabb says even if the runway was extended the likelihood of jets flying commercial flights to and from Nelson is highly unlikely. The busiest route for the region is to Wellington and flying jets on that route, or other short flights, is simply uneconomical. “The reality for Nelson is that jets don’t do short haul economically. Our busiest route is Nelson to Wellington and then to Christchurch and they aren’t what we call jet compliant routes. They don’t even get into cruise mode,” she says. The Facebook page hoped Jetstar would bring more competition

Mayor ready to take some punches Whether you love or loathe his politics, watching Nelson mayor Aldo Miccio get into the boxing ring this weekend should be great viewing. Aldo will fight a mystery opponent this Saturday night as part of the Fight 4 Victory fundraiser at the Trafalgar Centre. The bout will help raise money for the Victory Boxing Club and Aldo says he’s more than a little nervous heading into the big night.

“I fly a lot anyway so it would make a difference if it was cheaper. Competition is healthy.”

“Yes, it could be good but if they were flying bigger planes in then you end up with a lower number of flights.”

“Competition is good but Air New Zealand have a habit of pushing any competition out of Nelson.”

“Yes, it increases competition and lots of Nelsonians like to travel because we are so isolated.”

which would mean lower prices for Nelson’s air travellers. “Nelson is NZ’s fourth busiest airport, with only one major carrier. The people of Nelson are missing out and so is another major carrier on the competition dollar,” it said. That was followed by other comments from fans of the page encouraging Jetstar to consider flying to and from Nelson. Jetstar agrees that prices would drop if it were to come to town but says it would not consider a move to Nelson unless the runway could be lengthened. “We’re thrilled to see grassroots demand for Jetstar flights in Nelson. We’re always looking for new destinations where our low fares can offer up new opportunities for people to travel and we can understand why Nelson residents would want us to fly to the region given how much they’re paying for flights with the existing carrier in the market,”

said a Jetstar spokesperson in a statement to Nelson Weekly. “Unfortunately the runway at Nelson Airport is a little short for our fleet of Airbus A320s. We’d be open to exploring the option of flying to Nelson if the runway was lengthened and, of course, subject to any regulatory consultation and approvals.” Any increase in runway length is “highly unlikely”, according to Nelson Airport Ltd’s “master plan” that was released in 2010. The plan estimates the cost of extending the runway – to also cater for international flights – to be $40-$60 million including the costs of perimeter security, customs and immigration facilities. There would be other concerns as well, including noise restrictions. Kaye says the airport would welcome more competition but the reality means Nelson is unlikely to see commercial jet planes flying to the city in the foreseeable future. “But hey, if they change their mind, we’d definitely welcome them.”

Mayor ready to take some punches FROM PAGE 1 “I’m excited about it but really nervous. I still think I’ll win but I’m not really confident about it. I know my opponent will be really tough and at the end of the day there’s a guy in the ring with you trying to knock you out so you can’t be that comfortable in there.” Fight 4 Victory has brought together well known Nelson businessmen and women, local sporting personalities and the mayor for the event. Across 13 bouts, 26 boxers will go through three two minute rounds and organisers say tickets are selling fast, with 50 corporate tables already sold out. Tickets are available from www.ticketdirect.co.nz, i-Sites, New World, Nelson School of Music and Theatre Royal.

Heslops Group staff got to throw their gumboots off and put their feet up last week, organising a post-flood cleanup party for Wakatu Industrial Estate workers. Jan Aberhart, the company’s general manager, says some of the cleanup is still ongoing, while insurance pricing was yet to be completed. While business was back to normal within a matter of days, there is still a lot of extra work created by the flood that had not been sorted. “We’re still trying to deliver customer service because your customers come first but if you’re busy anyway where is the additional capacity to go and do all the other stuff? It just takes an enormous amount of effort,” says Jan. “We’re still cleaning up from flood damage and that will take awhile. Carpet had to be lifted and walls had to be cut open to dry up and we’re still trying to get new equipment.”

‘Horrific’ drivers caught SAliSbUrY To STAY opEn: Salisbury School will remain open after the Minister of Education, Hekia Parata, made the shock announcement in Richmond last week. More than a year ago the school faced closure as the Ministry of Education favoured an intensive wrap around service for students. Salisbury board of trustees chairwoman Helen McDonnell says she wanted to thank the community for its support over the past 18 months.

Police have described two cars racing each other at speeds up to 179 km per hour along Whakatu Dr as “horrifically dangerous” in a speed-fuelled weekend. Nelson Police impounded three cars after three separate incidents over the weekend. The first, at around 11.30pm on Friday, saw one car clocked travelling at just over 150km/h and another vehicle, which was overtaking at the time, clocked at 179km/h. Sergeant Stu Wright says both vehicles were being driven by teenagers who had

passengers onboard. “These drivers are both inexperienced. They showed reckless disregard for their own safety, the safety of their passengers and that of other innocent road users,” he says. Both cars were impounded under the boy racer legislation and the drivers’ licences were suspended for 28 days. About 2am on Sunday, police spotted a car on Te Mamaku Dr (Ruby Bay bypass) travelling at 172kmh. That car was also impounded. Charges are yet to be laid for all three drivers.

Meanwhile, shortly after midnight on Sunday morning a 19 year old driver fled from police after they attempted to pull her over. The driver reached speeds up to 150km/h down Rutherford St as police gave chase. She then crashed at the corner of Halifax St and was arrested. She will appear in the Nelson District Court charged with reckless driving, failing to stop, assaulting a police officer, resisting arrest, driving while forbidden, drink driving and possession of cannabis.

However, he still believes there was another dog involved as Peter had spotted at least two. “[The second dog] is a small white one or whitish.” Having reported the incident right away, Ian believed changes needed to be made to bylaws surrounding dog control. “They have to take responsibility. This is a serious issue. There could have been people involved. People with uncontrolled dogs or unchipped dogs, well they shouldn’t be allowed them. That dog could be in another packed lot shortly.” Ian, whose staff were all quite emotional after the incident, is expecting in excess of $8000 compensation from the owners of the dogs to cover the cost of the 56 dead sheep. Dog Control Services are still investigating the incident.

Dying sheep were crawling around his farm by the time Peter Phipps responded to a dog attack last Tuesday. The horrific incident at the rural Mahana property, which is leased by Ian Parkes, was being likened to a war-zone by Peter, the farm’s manager. Peter had a message left on his answer phone by a neighbour that said four of the sheep had been attacked. The actual tally eventually rose to 56. “I went straight over there,” he says. “There were either dead sheep in ponds or sheep wandering around half eaten. I’ve never seen anything like this. It was like walking around in a war-zone with half shot men trying to crawl to safety.” Describing the scenes he witnessed, Peter kept saying he had never seen anything like this, despite previously living down south where snow storms would kill flocks of sheep. Ian says one of the dogs involved had been indentified as belonging to a neighbour and the “emotional”

Villagers support court case The Waimea Village Residents Committee was re-elected with only one change at its AGM last week and its first point of order was to confirm it will push on with action against the owners of the village in the high court. Chairman Jerry Rowland says the, at times heated, meeting didn’t do much to resolve the growing animosity between the residents and the owners of the village

but the residents did overwhelmingly support court action against Michael and Carolyn Wright. The case was first heard last week where the judge has asked for more information and for an attempt to resolve some of the issues between the lawyers of the two parties. Michael said at Sunday’s meeting in front of a packed audience that the case had

been thrown out of court but Warwick Heal, the lawyer for the residents committee, says that is simply untrue. “In fact, and you can quote me on this, it’s total bullshit.” Jerry says the action will “definitely” be decided in court. “We now have 189 lease holders who have signed on to be plaintiffs in this case and the meeting confirmed and ratified the

committee’s decision to support the high court action and the establishment of a war chest trust for the purpose of funding the court action. “The meeting also authorised the committee and its officers joining the [court] action as plaintiffs and the committee to conduct the high court action as directed by legal advice,” he told Nelson Weekly.

New choir off to flying start

A new community choir that featured in the Nelson Weekly last month has got off to a flying start with 70 people turning up to its first practice night. Community Choir at the Boathouse director Alice Robin says she was blown away with the response. She was initially hoping

for around 20 people for the first week. "We were thinking we might be lucky to get 20 people or so as it’s a new project, a free trial, unknown choir. We were blown away and a large proportion of those were first time singers, really amazing. We had no idea so many people would come to-

gether to give it a try." Alice says the singers had a great time and she's hoping the majority of them keep coming back week after week. She says support from various groups, which displayed posters promoting the choir and an article in the Nelson Weekly

helped spread the word. The choir has had support from the Arts Council via a community grant to help with the venue hire. If you would like to give the choir a try – simply head along just before 7pm on a Monday or contact Alice on 553 0448. Police move to community centre Police officers based in Victory will soon be working from the Victory Community Centre in an effort to work closer with the local community. The community constable base that is on Toi Toi St, near Victory Square, will be closed and a new office set up in the centre. The base will be used by the Victory community constable and police volunteers from July 1. Community police section Sergeant Mal Drummond says the

move will mean police are closer to other services in the area. “Being in the same building will further enhance the working relationships police have with services based in the centre.” Police were officially welcomed to the centre at a ceremony last Tuesday by its management and other agency workers. Mal says he’s looking forward to getting staff in the centre in July when new community constable Anita Pearless begins.

fect outcome and a “win-win”. “Thanks to everyone who entered, this is a perfect scenario really and we’re really grateful,” he says. The book was given to the Elma Turner Library this week.

Entries in for volunteer awards Nelsonians have really got behind their volunteers with 113 entries received for the TrustPower Nelson Tasman Community Awards. The awards recognise and reward voluntary groups for the outstanding contribution they make to the local community and are run in partnership with the Nelson City and Tasman District Councils. Entries for the Community Awards closed on Friday last week. TrustPower community relations representative Teresa Partridge says she

is very pleased with the variety of entries from across the district for the year’s community awards. “I’m over the moon with the number of entries this year. The community awards are all about recognising and thanking the hard work of these voluntary groups. The work is often done behind the scenes and the volunteers work tirelessly and give so much for the benefit of those who live in the Nelson City and Tasman Districts,” says Teresa. The Awards cover five categories; Heritage and Environment, Health and

Wellbeing, Arts and Culture, Sport and Leisure, and Education and Child/Youth Development. The category winners receive $500 and runners-up receive $250. The supreme winner will take home $1500, a trophy, framed certificate and an all-expenses paid trip to the TrustPower National Community Awards in Invercargill next March. The TrustPower Nelson Tasman Community Awards will be announced and presented at a function on Monday July 29.

Tuesday May 14 A recent fundraiser for Hampden St School was a great success with more than 20 parents heading along to a workshop run by Chef Chris Fortune, winner of New Zealand Hell’s Kitchen in 2003. The event “How to get your children to eat their green snotty vegetables” focussed on helping parents improve their children’s eating habits and money saving tricks and managed to raise more than $250 for the school, which has earmarked the fund to go towards buying library books.

Graduation for ARK dogs

The Nelson Ark’s latest Apart Programme concluded on Friday with all of the participants demonstrating their dogs’ newly learned skills in front of a small audience. The programme matches a young person, mostly of college age, with a previously unwanted dog under a trainer’s guidance. They are responsible for training it over the eight week course and co-ordinator Karen Howieson says dog training teaches discipline, responsibility and problem solving techniques. “Our philosophy is compassionate action and the programme we offer is a win-win for everyone involved,” says Karen. “What we saw was much more confident young people being able to work dogs in front of an audience and those skills they learn will

go on to be applicable in other areas of their lives.” Karen says while some of the participants have had experience with dogs at home, none of them have ever actually trained one. Often there are participants who have a fear of dogs when they start. “They might have had a family pet but for most of them they aren’t actually responsible and that’s one of the key things to our programme. Our attendance rate is between 90-100 per cent and that’s because of their commitment to their dog.” All of the dogs, which were indentified by the Tasman Dog Control services or by SPCA, are up for adoption having been through the training process. For more information on which dogs are available, email info@thenelsonark.co.nz.

Refugees get car skills

A group of former refugees now have some valuable skills to keep their vehicles on the road thanks to Bowater Honda. A group of 14 men from Burma and Nepal attended a free car maintenance course to learn basic mechanical skills such as checking oil, water and changing tyres. The course, organised by the Nelson Multi Cultural Council and run by Bowater Honda, was aimed at providing the men with the skills to keep their vehicle safe and on the road for longer, says service technician Martin Stevenson, who spent the afternoon teaching the group. “By the end of the day, after some hands-on practical training, they will walk away with

some basic skills so that should they break down, they’ll know what to look for.” A show of hands showed that only one of the group had ever changed a tyre before, something that organiser Dev Mehta says is no surprise seeing as most of them had never owned a car before. “For these guys, where they come from having a car is like a 5 star luxury while here it is a basic necessity.” He says the Bowater Motor Group was the only company asked that was willing to offer the course and that was something he was extremely grateful for. “It makes such a difference to them, having that basic knowledge to be able to help themselves.”

Good luck to Steve and Tracey, really hard to read these stories and not feel for you both. (Via text). Although I do not know her personally, I must commend Clr Rachel Reese on her recent statement that the city council's criteria for spending should focus on what is "critical, essential and then desirable...." Her concern about rising debt-levels is echoed around the country but there is too little in-depth analysis as to the assumptions governing debt-servicing policies. What is the use of the rhetoric in the revised Local Government Act about cost-effectiveness when a rule-of-thumb guideline for councils that 20 per cent of total revenues devoted to debt-servicing is "prudent"? But is it desirable? In our submission to the Nelson City Council, Social Credit has pointed out that rates can actually be reduced if Part 6 of the Public Finance Act were invoked - giving the Finance Minister the powers to make similar credits to councils. Up to our civic leaders to exercise some honest thinking. Heather Marion Smith. Vietnam heroes ready to reminisce Rusty Taylor is a true kiwi hero. He will hate reading that, but it’s the truth of it. Rusty is a 33 year veteran of the New Zealand Army and was the sergeant major of the Victor 5 company in Vietnam which lost two men in battle and had five seriously wounded. Many of his men came back from South East Asia broken and horrified with the sights they saw and the reception they received from a hostile public bitterly against the unpopular American war. He has spent the following threeand-a-bit decades trying to help those men who needed it, those grunts. “And there’s no higher compliment than being called a grunt,” he says. “It’s a term of endearment.” Some of “his” men drank themselves to death, some committed suicide, some continue to feel aggrieved by the treatment they received and some – like Rusty – live in a body poisoned by Agent Orange and all the effects that causes. Rusty lives in Stoke and sat talking to Nelson Weekly for two and a half hours but he didn’t want to be photographed for this piece, he didn’t want the spotlight. He has spent years helping his men with money, letters and support. He successfully lobbied the Prime Minister to get one of his men out of a Thai jail and sent him $130 a week for the ten years prior for food and cigarettes to keep the gangs in the prison at bay. He and his family also sponsored the teenaged daughter of another soldier who had committed suicide and he has set up a family trust to buy medical equipment and supplies to help make the final years of former soldiers that much easier. Rusty has a proud family history in the Army, four brothers fought in World War 2, one losing his life in combat. Two of his sonsin-law were in the army as was one daughter and a grandson. He turned down nine opportunities to

become an officer. He didn’t want it, he wanted to be with his men so the army gave him the rank of sergeant major, the first such rank of any soldier in the Commonwealth. He was also the first New Zealand noncommissioned officer appointed as an instructor at the Royal Military College in Canberra, Australia. This weekend Rusty will be joined by about a third of the Victor 5 company at a reunion in Nelson. Forty five veterans of Victor 5 will be attending with family from all over New Zealand and he says it’s a good chance to catch up with the other men who put their lives on the line in the jungles of Vietnam. “As we gather veterans will inevitability become involved in the recall of events during their Vietnam service and the repercussions from those events during the intervening 43 years. The memories may be good or bad, funny or sad, fortuitous or tragic and they will be mirrored in the gestures, the eyes, the laughter and the tears of those reminiscing,” says Rusty. The reunion begins on Friday but the highlight will be a parade at Anzac Park on Sunday from 9.30am where all Vietnam veterans are welcome. Nelson RSA president Barry Pont was also a Victor 5 solider and says Rusty was extremely well respected both by the men on the ground in the army itself. “He achieved something no other man in the commonwealth had at the time, achieving the rank of sergeant major. We all knew where we stood with him and we all knew he was on our side.” Rusty won’t be alone as a hero this weekend. Forty five heroes will reminisce, remember and pay their respects to their brothers who couldn’t attend.

• A general carrier departed, a fertiliser ship, the tanker, four container vessels, the national park ferry, fourteen large fishing vessel movements, the big car carrier and a fruit vessel all kept the port and stevedores busy during the last week. • It was with some disappointment that the harbour master's office has observed several small craft, paddle boarders, kayakers and runabouts out after dark without lights clearly visible. This has been the cause of death and injury in other parts of the country when the smaller craft have been hit by a larger vessel that just didn’t see them. I don’t suppose the skippers of the bigger vessels had a chance really. • NCC by-law 218 allows an infringement of

Have you got a light on your lifejacket if you are out at night? Your local boating shop should be able to supply something that can be retro-fitted. Stay safe this winter. Do you need a pre purchase inspection report for your insurance company, your bank or your own piece of mind? Not sure about the new changes to the code of conduct for real estate agents? Local father and son duo Tony and Ross Walker from The HABiT building inspection team are here to help educate agents, sellers and buyers who aren’t that sure about the “potential defects” clause. As a local Registered Master Builder and Licensed Building Practitioner Tony can help you get up to speed with identifying potential building defects and solutions to fix them. The recent changes to the real estate agent code of conduct state that if a licensee who is ‘reasonably competent’, becomes aware of a ‘potential defect’ in a property, or if the agent asks the vendor if there are any hidden or underlying defects, the agent should warn either the seller or the buyer to get an independent report. Tony can help educate anyone who would like assistance in this grey area. “This is an area I want to be able to help assist in any way I can to help agents, sellers and buyers within a 24 hour turnaround period, not just assess defects, but to provide successful remedies or solutions for them.” Talk to Tony and Ross at The Habit, with 75 years in the building industry between them, they provide comprehensive building reports in language you understand.

HOCKEY: Federal's Jesse Forsyth makes a break during Sunday's 3-3 draw with Tasman at Saxton Hockey Turf. His side, which won the competition last year, remains unbeaten in the first two matches having disposed of United last weekend. There are only four teams in the men's division one competition this year with Blenheim's Arotea Kiwi making up the final spot. This weekend will see no games played due to Queen's Birthday Weekend. Talk about polar opposites. Last Saturday the Richmond Rabbits had to rely on a late match winner, this week the defending TRL champions reached 104 points as it hammered bottom place Victory Phoenix Vikings in Tahunanui. With the front rowers laying a platform, Richmond’s classy backs were far too good for the weak Victory side, which scored no points of its own in the match. With Tasman Rugby League pulling the pin on this Friday’s Town vs Country game, the Rabbits will be well rested after the rollercoaster fortnight and assistant coach Deon Charles say that is a big positive with injuries hampering the side. “We’re struggling for numbers with a number of injuries but we’re certainly happy with our form and at the end of the day the results are all that counts,” he says. “There’s no game this weekend but we’re looking at it as a positive. We need this weekend off so we can rest up some niggles and get some boys back after the break.”

So what does a coach tell its side after winning by 104 points? “That’s a good question. To be fair we can’t really take a lot from that game. We just have to go back to doing what we do and sticking to our structures and look to the next game. We need to look at what we’re doing and not what level our opposition is at.” Deon admits he did not expect such a gap between the competition’s best and worst sides. “We don’t take any team in this competition lightly no matter where they sit but we know they are new and that they are struggling for numbers, like we all are, but we certainly didn’t expect the gap to be that big.” He thought his rampaging front rowers were the difference between the two. “Tamaio Piripi, Shannon Telfar, Tristan Laubscher and those guys, along with Matt Muollo who was a standout off the bench in his first season. Without those guys setting a platform our great backs wouldn’t be able to score the tries that they do.”

Nelson win after the hooter A last minute try to Shane Christie, converted by David Havili, has seen Nelson remain unbeaten in the Bayleys Tasman Trophy and on track to top Pool A. The 28-26 win over Star & Garter Waimea Old Boys at Trafalgar Park on Saturday means Galbraith Nelson retain the Noel Barton Trophy, a piece of silverware its coach says is one of the most important of the season. “This is very important. The Noel Barton Trophy is one of the most important games on our calendar,” says Peter Grigg. “It means a lot to our club. Noel

Suburbs go top after big win AMI Nelson Suburbs are the latest Mainland Premier League table toppers after thrashing champions Ferrymead Bays 4-0 in Christchurch on Sunday. The impressive result now gives Suburbs 22 points so far this season, one ahead of Cashmere Technical and Ferrymead. While co-coach Ben Wright says the squad was delighted and would enjoy the victory, it will have to

quickly turn its attention to Saturday’s game against Cashmere at Saxton Field. “Tactically we were spot on and put in the work rate, the team spirit just carried us through and we managed to score four good goals,” he says. “I don’t think anyone is getting too carried away though, there’s a long way to go and we’re just concentrating on one game at a time.”

minutes to tie the game. Despite having missed a conversion from a similar spot just minutes earlier, left winger David calmly slotted the match winner to seal the victory. “He’s a very calm and collected fella so we were pretty confident.” Having led by ten points for most of the game, Waimea looked shell shocked after full-time, perhaps ruing missed opportunities with Billy Guyton, who has had an otherwise strong season since returning, skewing two penalty kicks. “Billy is generally a reliable kicker so it’s not like him to

miss those kicks but yeah it kept us in it obviously.” With only one win on the board after the first round of the Car Company division one competition, Peter is “really happy” being undefeated in round two and looking odds on to top Pool A of the Tasman Trophy with just two games remaining. “Having players come back has helped us. Robbie and Shane have just really shown that they are a step above most of the players in this competition so having them has certainly helped.”

Prices Pharmacy Black earn inside running editorial@nelsonweekly.co.nz quarter 26-21 up. Nelson’s shooters Abbey Franklin and Danielle Kerwin looked a little intimidated by Prices’ evergreen goal keep, Dayveen Stephen. But Abbey still managed to beat her opposite on the base line on a number of occasions. Nelson’s coach Kathryn Orange made a positional change for the final quarter swapping centre Nicole Drummond and wing attack, Ellie Bell. While they played solidly throughout, Nicole put in a number of superb feeds from wing attack as she was closer to the circle. Nicole displayed great vision which paid dividends from second phase. The teams each scored on their centre pass at the beginning of the final ten minutes, then Prices supporters became decidedly nervous as Nelson rattled on five unanswered goals to level the score. Prices dug deep and found another gear to rattle on seven unanswered goals of their own. While Prices would be thrilled with their 35-30 win, Nelson College should not be disappointed with the loss as they have a wealth of talent within their ranks and will be a force to be reckoned with as their combinations develop and the season progresses. Premier preview: Possibly top billing this week will be the Jacks OPD and Richmond Robbie’s Bar & Bistro encounter at 5.45pm. At full strength Richmond could be a

The well performing Waimea College will take on Taylors Wanderers at 7pm. Wanderers had an improved showing against Richmond last week and will be looking at building on that on Thursday. Wanderers have a hard working defensive unit which is led by Hayley Campbell while their workhorse Pip Lee carries an enormous load through the mid court. Waimea coach, Faye Eden must be relishing the fact that she has so many options right throughout the court with possibly only goal shoot, Shaun Aindow actually owning her bib. Waimea is likely to record a comfortable win, however they will not be complacent as fresh in their minds will be the unexpected loss to Wanderers in 2012’s first round. Last week’s solutions

Prices Pharmacy Black took a step closer to earning a berth in the Premier Grade promotion/relegation game when they beat for Nelson College for Girls A in the third round of Grade 1 played at Saxton Courts on Saturday. The teams were tied at nine apiece at the first break, and while there was only one missed goal there was considerable ball lost through court. There were even fewer goals scored in the second period, with Prices outscoring Nelson College 6-4. Even the umpires Kate Smith and Annie Ewers-Kennedy were heard to be discussing the amount of turnover ball in the first half. Nelson’s goal keep, Kea McGuinnetty displayed nice vision as she honed in on four well timed intercepts, and was well supported by goal defence Rosa Edwards who hunted all day but proved to be expensive in the obstruction and contact count. Prices made a change at goal attack at the major break with Emma Riddell replacing Bex Watene. Bex had put in a solid two quarters where she shouldered a hefty load of the court work. Emma struck up an immediate partnership with seasoned shooter, Leigh Leigh Wiremu and for the remainder of the game the pair did not miss a shot. Unassuming Ashleigh McLean was Prices’ pivotal link through court where she provided stress free, quality ball to her shooters. There were definite ebbs and flows during the third quarter – first Nelson scored three, then Prices scored three of their own. Prices got onto another roll towards the end of the quarter when they scored five unanswered goals to go into the final

FC Nelson through after stunning win After FC Nelson ladies scored a historic win in the first round of the ASB Knockout Cup on Sunday they sat silent in the changing room. But it didn’t take long to get the celebrations under way. “There was a rigger of beer in the changing rooms so I said ‘who wants a drink?’ and everyone started yelling and joking,” says the team’s goal keeper and manager Sasha Kerslake.”It was great.” Earlier, a Claire Erasmus goal in the second half was enough for the home side to win 1-0 in front of more than 100 spectators at Trafalgar Park. It was the first time a women’s team from Nelson had entered the competition, which is the equivalent to the Chatham Cup. Sasha says playing in front of a noisy crowd and on a “perfect” Trafalgar Park, had the girls rather nervous. “I think it was nerves, we didn’t know the opposition and how they’d play and there

were a lot of people cheering for us. I got goosebumps a few times because of the noise from the crowd.” FC Nelson played their way into the game and had the better of the second half. Claire was superb for the hosts, making several dangerous runs down the left flank and deserved the winning goal. Nelson should have had a second just ten minutes later but a contentious off side call against striker Briar Luff after the ball was in the back of the net denied a comfortable cushion heading into the final quarter. Sasha says celebrations were “amazing”. We all were so happy and we got dressed up and went up stairs to the pavilion for the after match. It was a great day for us as a team.” FC Nelson will play its next game of the cup on Monday, Queens Birthday with the opposition and location to be announced today.
