Five storey building up by Christmas Nelson’s newest “high rise” will be up by Christmas, say contractors. The five storey Quest building on Collingwood St started in July and contractors Arrow International say they’re making good progress. Nelson manager for Arrow, Steve Kelso, says they hope to have the building up by Christmas, with work then

starting on fitting out the building before it officially opens in May. The building will house serviced apartments operated by Quest, a national chain. Steve says there’s been plenty of interest in the building from passersby and that all of the sub-contractors used have been local firms

Trouble for football board The board behind the region’s national youth league football team appears to be in disarray, with just three board members left and the chairman saying he’ll resign at the end of the current season. Nelson Weekly understands that three board members of the Nelson Marlborough Falcons football team have resigned in the past month, leaving just chairman Aldo Miccio, his brother Francis and Blen-

heim-based Nigel Thompson. But Aldo doesn’t appear to be aware of the shrinking board, telling the Weekly last week that there are still five board members but two would step down once three representatives from Nelson Bays Football and Marlborough Football are appointed. But two of the people he named as currently on the board have confirmed they resigned weeks ago. Even worse, Nelson

two board members from Nelson Bays Football ‘as soon as possible’. But he hasn’t disclosed any financial information or what their financial commitments are. We won’t commit to a board where we don’t have that information. Why would we want to go onto a board that in this situation? It would be crazy, I’m not interested

in doing that,” says John. “I told him to send a full and frank proposal and I’ll take it to the district executive to discuss, but I haven’t seen that yet.” The Nelson Marlborough Falcons are a private team that play in the New Zealand Football-run ASB Youth League. They won the right to a youth league licence three years ago over Nelson Bays Football, which runs the game in Nelson on behalf of Christch-

urch-based Mainland Football, one of the country’s six federations. This year, the Falcons have also been left without a major sponsor and New Zealand Football had talks with Aldo in Auckland last Thursday to discuss the $20,000 entry fee which hadn’t been paid. Aldo says a new major sponsor has been signed though, which will be announced in “five weeks”. The regular season ends on December 21, eight weeks away. “We’re set to announce, in about

five weeks’ time, our sponsor for the rest of the season and for next season, which is fantastic,” says Aldo. “We’re just waiting for the new strips to arrive and then we’ll get their logo on it, and then we’ll be able to announce it.” He also said New Zealand Football were being “very patient” with the late entry fee and were “understanding”. He was bullish about the future of the Falcons, saying it was still his goal to have a men’s national league side, but admitted that he was resigning from his role as chairman at the end of the season. That would leave a twoman board. Cam Mitchell of New Zea-

land Football says he was happy with the discussions with Aldo last week and that they have agreed to a payment plan for the team. He says the governance of the team will be reviewed at the end of the season. “As it sits, the Falcons are meeting the obligations in terms of their licence and we think it’s positive that they’re looking at their governance structure.” On the pitch, the Falcons are unbeaten, playing fantastic football and Aldo says that’s a huge success story. “On the field it’s been unreal stuff this season. It highlights the depth of football and is a slap in the face of all those people who didn’t back the team, didn’t think they’d do well.”

DUCE NEW SEASON PRO

Nelsonians do the ‘Nelson’

Today is 111 days until Nelson hosts its first Cricket World Cup game and to celebrate, Nelsonians will be doing the “Nelson”. The “Nelson” involves getting one or both feet off the ground to ward off bad luck on scores of 111. Some players believe bad things will happen on that score. It may be considered unlucky because the number resembles a wicket without bails. Standing or one leg, or if you’re sitting down, keeping both feet off the ground is supposed to prevent disaster until the score changes. So organisers of Nelson’s world cup games have decided to use the tradition to help build excitement. Today, the mayor will be doing the

“Nelson” at Civic House as will students from various local schools. There will be plenty of other opportunities for locals to take part in this odd tradition, not only at the games but all the other activities that are planned for the Festival of Cricket that will be surrounding the matches. The Festival of Cricket starts on February 14, when New Zealand and Sri Lanka play the opening game in Christchurch. It will include a giant Nelson 111 Street Party, featuring a market day, local wine, beer and food, and a big screen to watch the opening game. The first game to be played at Saxton Oval is between the West Indies and Ireland on March 5

Getting ‘haka fit’ for nationals Nelson’s kapahaka group are being put through their paces in an effort to get “haka fit” for the national kapahaka festival next year. Te Whatukura Kapahaka club has been doing fitness sessions with Greg Witika at Wairua Body Coaching Systems in Stoke. After a solid workout, Greg makes the group perform in the gym to get them used to performing with a high heart rate. And they hope it will help them during the competition in Christchurch in March. Awhina Kihi – a co-tutor and performer with the Te Whatukura Kapahaka club – came up with the idea, and says it is just the first step in a plan to use traditional movement and performing arts to inspire and motive local Maori and Pacific Islanders to embrace a more active and healthy lifestyle.

“With over twenty years involvement with Kapahaka, I have learnt it is the perfect vehicle for Māori and Pacific cultures to become involved in an active and healthy lifestyle,” she says. Greg says there is more to becoming haka fit than physical strength and stamina and he’s coaching the performers to utilise natural movement. “But we’re also talking about nutrition and belief in oneself, so that on the day the group can step out with confidence knowing they are going to give the very best they can.” After the work with the kapahaka group, Awhina’s vision for a community outreach programme is taking shape, with the successful completion of the first stage of a funding application with Te Pūtahitanga. If final funding is granted, they plan to take the programme to the wider community.

Nelson’s Nike designer wins top award Matt Holmes has a lot of shoes, and not all of them are his. There’s Michael Johnson’s gold-medal-winning sprint shoe, light as a feather, signed by the man himself. There’s Roger Federer’s custom-made tennis shoe, so big and wide it renders Johnson’s elf-like. He even has a scary-looking agestained innersole from the 1960s - the original blueprint, he says, sticking out his sneakered foot, of his Nike Frees. Born in England, the Nelson-bred 45-yearold is the creative director of innovation in global footwear at Nike. For 17 years he’s been based in Portland, Oregon, quietly going about his work. Then the New Zealand Institute of Design called with good news - an invitation to fly him home to Auckland this month to receive the John Britten Black Pin for achievements in design. The same night he flew in, he gave a speech

about what it’s like to head one of the top design departments in the world. He heads a team of 23 designers in the innovation lab for the world’s most recognisable sportswear brand. It’s a job that requires equal parts logic and creativity, and an ability to predict the future. “You’re always looking at things through the eyes of the athlete. It’s always, ‘what’s next’? I’m constantly researching new materials, new technologies, new insights,” he says. “Athletes are changing. They’re getting a heck of a lot stronger, fitter, faster, so there are much higher demands on the product. It has to evolve with them.” Matt took science at school but his real passion was sport. He grew up idolising Richard Hadlee, Martin Crowe, Chris Lewis and, at Nelson College, played any sport he could. At 13, he and his mates would even break into the sports centre

at midnight, throw on the floodlights and play tennis until 2am. Meanwhile, his shoes got a hiding, so rather than replace them with money he didn’t have, he’d spend hours fashioning durable solutions. Well before kids scooted along the footpath on wheeled sneakers, Matt was attaching the top of a roll-on deodorant to his shoes to minimise friction. Call it fate, but the day he figured out his future was the day he forked out for a pair of Nikes. As he left the shop, a silver sports car drove past, and he had an epiphany. “It clicked in my head - somebody’s making these things, deciding what they look like and what they do. I went to school the next day and my teacher said, ‘That’s industrial design’. ‘What’s that?’ He gave me a VHS about manufacturing at Philips radios. I watched it and thought, ‘That’s my job’.” Matt went on to study at Wellington

Polytechnic School of Design, before getting a job at Fisher & Paykel. But, by 28, it was time to stretch his wings. He flew to San Francisco and met with Ideo, Sony, Tonic and finally Apple, where he met British designer Jonathan Ive, the company’s senior vice-president. “Jonathan said to me, ‘Are you sure you really want to do computers? It looks like you’re kinda into sport’.” When Matt agreed, the gods intervened once again. Ive knew a designer who’d just left Nike. “He told them, ‘Fly this man up’. So they flew me up and I got the job.” Over the years he’s worked with All Blacks, Kobe Bryant, Serena Williams, Justin Gatlan, Maria Sharapova and his favourites, Roger Federer and “Rafa” Nadal. This story originally appeared in the Weekend Herald canvas magazine.

Health issues tackled by warmer homes scheme

Tahunanui resident, Sam Hippolite, was so cold last winter that he would wear a beanie and clothes to bed to try and keep warm. But Sam will have nothing to worry about next winter after the house he rents was last week fully insulated, as part of the Warmer Healthier Homes project in Nelson and Tasman. The project is a partnership between the government’s Energy Efficiency and Conservation Authority, Canterbury Community Trust, Nelson Tahunanui resident Sam Hippolite, front left, with Nelson Marlborough District Health Board's Marlborough District Health Board public health promoter Bronwyn White, Canterbury Community Trust's Bill Dahlberg, right, and and Nelson Bays Primary Health, Nelson Tasman Housing Trust's Russ Aiton, rear, at Sam's house that was insulated last week. and aims to insulate around 300 houses around the region over the next two years. lation of his house. He was eligible for free insulation after being hospitalised with respiratory problems and having his home assessed for the project by insulation specialists, Absolute Energy Ltd. NMDHB public health promoter, Bronwyn White says there is a direct link between cold, damp homes and poor health and that “warming up a home means fewer hospitalisations and fewer days off work.” She says there have been 15 referrals to the project and so far nine homes have been insulated - people need a Community Services Card to be eligible for the project. Canterbury Community Trust’s Bill Dahlberg says the trust is providing $150,000 each year for the project over the next two years, with the EECA providing $165,000 this year. Although the government launched Warm Up New Zealand: Heat Smart in 2009 that helped insulate 250,000 homes nationwide and 3600 in Nelson, Bill says Warmer Healthier Homes is different because it targets those people “who need it most”. “A lot of these people either don’t know about it or are reluctant to ask about it,” he says. Bill says they are already getting some good feedback on the project but it will be comprehensively reviewed to determine if it is a success. “We need to prove it can work to ensure the project is more than a one or two year project, and to encourage other group involvement in this very worthwhile challenge of warmer, healthier homes for our communities.”

Nayland student wins major science prize Competition was strong, but it was Nayland College student Adam Pauling who walked away with the Cawthron supreme award for science. With around 19 special category awards and 14 Cawthron awards, the amount of prize money available totalled $6500, with the two supreme winners getting $500 each. Adam received the John Cross award for Best Scientific Investigation for his project, Salty Trouble, Strained a Mussel?, alongside Waimea College’s Christopher Dippie who won Best Technological Investigation.

Adam’s research focused on mussel feeding rates in different salinities, in a bid to work out the most favourable environment for mussel growth. After finishing the project with five minutes to spare, Adam is not only happy to have won one of the supreme awards but extremely surprised at the achievement. “I wasn’t really expecting anything great from doing this, I was just doing it because it was fun and interesting, and so to get something out of it, especially the top award, is certainly a great honour.” Adam also won the gold award for the science section, making a total of $750 which will be going towards an exchange trip to Europe next year.

Stolen clothes, Tuesday, October, 21: After having her clothes stolen off her washing line just over a week ago, Hazel Trethowen has had a huge amount of feedback from those hoping she gets her items returned. Unfortunately, she still hasn’t heard back from police about her stolen clothes but has passed pictures of her two irreplaceable dresses around second-hand stores in the hope they will be recognised. Fusion loaf , Tuesday, October, 21: The fusion of brown and white bread into one loaf has been popular with curious customers at The Swedish Bakery. Owner Bronwyn Eriksson says while the loaf is only a trial, it will continue to be made for a few more weeks yet. Tip jar thief, Tuesday, October, 15: A 33 year old man was arrested on Monday, October 20, in relation to the theft of tip jars from Nelson store counter-tops. Theft of tip jars had been reported in the Hardy St Sprig & Fern, 623 in the City and the Vic Brew Bar.

The land that the building sits on was donated by Nelson City Council and construction was led by John Scott Jnr at a cost of £1124. Today, it’s the base for NMIT’s Applied Fitness students. The restoration was managed by Onus Construction and the building painted by Pinnacle Painters.

Your Voice Locals renting out homes for tourists: I have been alerted to a story that you have recently run on holiday houses. As an association we have nothing against people renting their houses out for short term accommodation. We do, however take considerable umbrage at the amazing unfairness perpetuated by councils that allow such an unfair playing field. Private homes compete directly with commercial accommodation but are not required to have the same safety features and compliance issues that commercial accommodation providers are compelled to have. Domestic accommodation providers are not required to pay the hefty costs levied by councils that commercial accommodators are compelled to bear. They are provided with services for free by councils that are a cost to commercial accommodation providers and they make no contribution to the running of Nelson Tasman Tourism that commercial accommodation providers are, again by the council, compelled to make. We believe that domestic accommodators are a vital part of the accommodation offer in any market but they shouldn’t be subsidised by all the other ratepayers. They shouldn’t be able to offer substandard accommodation and they shouldn’t be allowed to freeload off those that they compete with by not supporting the sterling work being done by Nelson Tasman Tourism. We believe that a council serving the best interests of their community

should address these issues and not assiduously ignore them. The council is putting their community and their visitors at risk! All that we ask for is a level playing field on which to compete. Michael Baines, Chief Executive, Motel Association of New Zealand.

Ripping people off, greedy sods. Brenda Kenny.

Hazel Trethowen good on you for making everyone aware I hope you get your things back. That just sucks big time. Ema Posa.

I think it's a great idea... bring tourists, such as families who may not like to stay in motels. They spend money in Nelson and boost local business. Also gives people a break from the mortgage for a while. No brainer really if they have somewhere else to stay, such as extended family. Amanda Duncan. Makes it hard for struggling motels who have gone through a long winter. Bonita Wilkinson. Items stolen off clothes line: Yes [it happened to me] but yonks ago, when I lived in Stoke. Towels, jumpers and some kids clothing. But she was caught. Jeez, that's real desperate measures right there. Sharon May Patterson. Years ago in The Wood my daughter and I lost bras and knickers. Reported it to the police. A while later a whole lot of undies were found in the bush. A guy was charged.

Some people must be so desperate. Or just plain weirdos. Janelle Thorpe.

Fingers crossed I get it back! Hazel Trethowen. Thank you for letting everyone know. The pictures you put up of your dress is gorgeous. I would be upset too, if someone stole my best items of clothing. I hope the burglar gets caught, and everyone gets their belongings back. Jannelle Patterson. Gigatown: @nelsonweekly thanks very much for supporting #gigatownnsn, great article on 5 things people can do to win 1GBPS internet for the region. Angela Ricker (via Twitter). Makos lose ITM Cup final: I think they put in the hard yards to get where they did, so huge congrats to them for making the final. Gotta respect that. Sharon Tarapipi Pi.

Beatson Road trial closure

Entry into Beatson Road from the Whakatu Drive roundabout will be closed to incoming traffic between the hours of 7.30am and 9.30am from Monday 27 October until Friday 7 November, weekdays only. This is a trial to assess the effect on traffic delays in the morning peak.

It’s been 64 years since Pat and Graeme first met. A lot may have changed since then, but the devotion between husband and wife certainly hasn’t. Four years after first meeting through a 1950 Otago Christian Youth Retreat, Pat and Graeme married in Dunedin on October 21, 1954, with her two sisters as bridesmaids and one of Graeme’s brothers as best man. Before the marriage, it was suggested to Graeme that he train for the ministry, and if you’re a minister you move all around the country. He asked Pat if she would go with him, she said yes, which was as good as a marriage proposal. Graeme's mother wasn't so keen on him joining the ministry though, so he pulled out of it. But the engagement stood. Straight after their marriage, the couple went to live in Christchurch where they had their first home together, a brandnew three bedroom bungalow. Graeme had qualified as an accountant in Dunedin and had worked for the company Vacuum Oil in Christchurch, before being head-hunted to take up the role of company secretary for Baigent’s Timber in Nelson, in 1963. After working as the national secretary of Churches of Christ in New Zealand from 1978, he became more and more involved in budget advice, helping those who were struggling to pay debts. Since then, they have been involved in many groups including the YMCA, and in 2002, Graeme was awarded the QSM

Throughout their 60 years together, there has no doubt been a mixture of rough and happy times, and Pat says a lot of their strength has come from their faith, as well as each other. “We’ve had a few ups and downs, including losing a granddaughter, but it’s been a good 60 years. We’ve met an amazing lot of people through the things we have been involved with. Graeme’s

uncle is Sir Garfield Todd, who was the Prime Minister of Southern Rhodesia years ago so, we’ve had dealing with lots and lots of people.” Maintaining a long and happy marriage isn’t always easy but Pat has her tips on how to achieve 60 years. “Patience and forgiveness and doing things together, that was really one of our strongholds. Graeme just expected me to be there and he still does.”

Originally from south-east France, she recently joined the South Island-owned multi disciplinary firm which provides engineering, surveying and planning services. “I always wanted to be an engineer. It is a great career, especially for people who like problem solving. It is also a career that allows you to travel.” An engineering scholarship took her to Gothenburg, Sweden, for 18 months to do a Master of Science in Structural Engineering. On graduating, she applied for jobs in the UK, Canada, Australia and New Zealand. “I got a job in Dunedin. I had no idea where it was and had to check on a map after I realised that the first interview had gone well, and I had a chance.” After seven years there, Audrey moved to Nelson with her Kiwi husband and 2 year old daughter, Chloé. She loves her job, particularly developing the business by building new client relationships. “I really like the fact that Davis Ogilvie is wellestablished and focuses on quality and practicality.” She says people are getting used to seeing women in engineering. “When I talk to people here in Nelson they are more surprised that I managed to live in Dunedin for so long. Nelson is so different, and is simply so much warmer. I really enjoy living along the Matai and cycling everywhere, and I can’t wait for the sea swims to start again.” Colliers International Nelson has been providing landlords and tenants with industry-leading, professional services in commercial and industrial property for many years. Debbie Cade joined the Colliers team in August this year and is fixed on establishing herself in the Nelson region, with a focus on leasing commercial properties. Debbie sees being the only full-time female commercial broker in the area as a strength, “There are many women out in the commercial world, both as landlords and business owners, who will relate well to working with a female broker” says Debbie. “I can assess a space and see its potential for a business owner, which means I can take their vision and apply it to a particular property to help them find the right space.” Debbie said her past experience as a business owner herself, working in the property renovation market, and years of collaboration with clients, means she has the skills to provide excellent service for landlords and tenants alike. “My belief is people buy from people and communication is the best tool you can have” said Debbie. “Give me a call with your brief and I’ll work hard to find you the best solution.” Colliers International has 12 offices around New Zealand, providing a wide range of award-winning commercial services. We Think Global and Act Local. Bridgette Pretty has worked as an accountant for close to 20 years and is a fully-qualified Certified Practising Accountant (CPA). Growing up on a farm in Murchison, then spending her early years in the family hospitality business, followed by a successful ten year commercial accounting career in Australia, means Bridgette has invaluable experience to help those involved in any business situation. This is her greatest strength when providing accounting and business services to her clients. Pretty Accounting was created in 2013 and has gained an impressive and diverse range of clients spread locally, nationally and even overseas, thanks to Bridgette’s drive to help clients reach their goals. The practice, located in Old St John’s Church Hall in Nelson and with a Motueka-base, is non-corporate and friendly, complementing her warm engaging personality and personalised, plain speaking approach to accountancy. Silvana Gottini, co-owner of Southern Exposure Tours (S.E.T.), a NZ-owned small group tour company, is passionate about the tours they offer. She leads many of the trips herself and says that people come away feeling like they have been travelling with a bunch of friends, not on a group tour. A pop-up art gallery has opened on Trafalgar St and the artist behind it says it's a fantastic way for people to check out some local art in time for Christmas. The gallery is in the building where Foxy Lady was, opposite SBS Bank. Artist Marilyn Andrews says this is the third pop-up art gallery she has opened. "We fill the void in between tenancies so we're on a week-to-week lease, which means if people want to see it they have to get in quick."

The Harbour Master’s

diary

Just after I learned of the tragic deaths in the North Island when four people in a dinghy had overturned, with only two lifejackets between them and two people drowning, we experienced the following: Three young women were out rowing along near Rocks Rd. Out of interest I enquired as to their lifejackets - "oh we forgot them, we didn’t have time for them, we don’t need them anyway" – well, I heard it all and then some stuff about my heritage. Being the good bloke I am I waited for them to come ashore where I observed their lifejackets in the boat… stupid. Yesterday, we observed four young people rowing a dinghy toward Haulashore Island with very little freeboard. It was almost swamped by a small ship passing some distance off. I apprehended the young women and skipper and returned them to shore. They were grateful for the lift, especially after I explained about the tragedy up north. I eventually found out the young skipper did have his life jacket with him but wasn’t wearing it. I pointed out that he is responsible for the lives of the girls and asked if he had checked the weather forecast. "Yeah, sunshine" was the educated response. In fact the weather was due to go round to a strong southerly. We think we saved a life that day. Then we meet this solo skipper, personal flotation device on, struggling to make headway with his tiny little electric outboard. Congratulations to this guy who had enough sense eventually to park the boat in the marina and walk back to Tahunanui to get his car, and get out of the south-westerly 30 knot conditions. What do we have to do to get the message across that stupidity around the water could cost you your life? Be prepared, check the weather, take two forms of communication, don’t drink alcohol and take a second form of propulsion. Dave Duncan, Harbour Master/Marine Operations Manager.

There are 11 artists with work on display at the new gallery and Marilyn says it's a nice collaboration. "We share the load, share the costs and share the space, and it gives local artists an outlet to show their work. It works out really well." The pop-up gallery is open Monday to Saturday from 10am until 5pm and Marilyn is encouraging people to get in quick. "We really don't know how long we're here for, it could be two weeks or it could be twenty weeks."

I just applied for the jobs as they came up and here I am 43 years later." Larry says one of the biggest challenges he has faced at Waimea College has been managing the school's rapid growth. The school has grown from 1100 students to 1550 in the last 12 years and they have worked hard to ensure that "the school hasn't got so big that students get lost". Larry says it has been "a really difficult decision" to leave Waimea but he feels the timing is right. The school is "in good heart" and he is also keen to expand his role as a mentor with the Principals Programme run by Centre for Educational Leadership at University of Auckland. Larry says he has had many highlights during his time

at Waimea including seeing the school's students excel at sporting and musical competitions, opening new buildings like the school's $2.4million gymnasium and working with "such dedicated and talented teachers". "Last week I attended the sports prizegiving and the level of achievement of those young people blew me away. I always enjoy watching school sport and when I told my wife I was resigning she said 'good, I'll be able to see you at weekend without going to sport'." School Board of Trustees deputy chair, Sue Malthus, says Larry has been a wonderful principal and his resignation came as a shock at last week's board meeting. "Waimea has been so lucky to have Larry. He is such a good leader." Sue says associate principal, Graeme Smith, will take up the role of acting principal.

Waimea College principal, Larry Ching, is resigning at the end of this year concluding a 43 year career as a teacher, deputy principal and principal in schools throughout the Nelson-Tasman region and New Zealand. Larry has been principal at Waimea College for the last 12 years following six years in charge of Awapatu College in Palmerston North. He had earlier been deputy principal at Nayland College for six years and spent 18 years teaching science at Motueka High School, Westland High School and Christchurch Boys High. Although Larry's career path to the top job at Waimea appeared to have been carefully mapped out, he says it was never planned that way. In fact, Larry admits he never intended to be a teacher and "got into the job quite by accident". "When I was a student at Nelson College, I really loved science so when I left school I became a science technician with the Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries. Then I wanted to get some more qualifications so I went to university to do a science degree but I had no money so I took a teaching scholarship. "I only did it to pay my way through university - I had no intention of going teaching. But when I graduated I went relief teaching at Christchurch Boys High and

Sporting stars Val visits local athletes coming to help boxers Victory Boxing is bringing some high-powered sports stars to Nelson in an effort to raise money for the thriving organisation. The trust has organised the Victory Boxing "After the Bell" evening at the Rutherford Hotel, with some special guests, including David Nyika, 2014 Commonwealth Games gold medallist, New Zealand rugby league player Monty Betham, and our very own New Zealand Hockey player, Anita Punt,” says Scott. Fight 4 Victory organisers Barry Galbraith and Paul Hampton have been inundated with people wanting to sign up for Fight 4 Victory 2015 to be held on April 4 next year and are hoping to announce some of the bouts at the Victory Boxing fundraiser. Victory Boxing aims to create a positive impact on our youth in the community, teaching life skills, honesty and respect, as well as developing opportunities for talented individuals. The popularity and success of the programme has grown and there are now over 170 boys and girls registered aged, between 8 and 18 years of age. The Victory Boxing “After The Bell!” fundraising evening will be held from 6pm to 8pm at The Rutherford Hotel on Friday, November 14. Ticket price of $50 includes a complimentary drink upon arrival, nibbles and entertainment. Please contact Mel Shirley at mel@marketing partners.co.nz to purchase tickets.

Double Olympic champion shot-putter Valerie Adams is making the most of her enforced injury break by inspiring young New Zealanders to "get away from their electronic games and screens" and into physical activity and sport. Valerie has been touring the country as part of a NZ Post-sponsored activity programme, ActiverPost, which came to Nelson last Thursday. The four-times world champion joined about 200 school childen aged five to eight from around the region at Saxton Field athletics track where she went through a series of Get Set Go activities developed by Athletics New Zealand. "It's been fun working with kids around the country and connecting with the community," Valerie says. "They are the future of this country so we need to encourage them to keep active and healthy. "It's not about finding the next track and field star. It's about inspiring these young people through events like this."

Valerie had her right arm in a sling after recovering from shoulder and elbow surgery to repair damaged tendons and ligaments. She hopes to resume training in two weeks and "be 100 per cent by January", as she builds up to the world

champs in Beijing in August. Valerie also visited the NZ Post and Richmond Paper Plus while she was in Nelson after visiting Auckland, Rotorua, Palmerston North and Wellington earlier in the week.

Michelle Welsh at the Power Angels Power Lifting Competition held earlier this year. Photo: Chris Symes/www.shuttersport.co.nz.

Powerlifter to represent NZ Michelle Welsh has only been powerlifting for a year, but she has already been selected in the New Zealand powerlifting team. Michelle competed at the National Powerlifting Championships in August this year in Christchurch, where she placed third overall in the women’s 85kg+ weight class. She says that gave her the confidence to complete an application form for the New Zealand team. She was successful and will represent New Zealand at the Asia and Oceania Powerlifting Championships held in

December, in Melbourne. “I sent away the application after placing third at the nationals, but I never thought I would be successful. I am really surprised to have come as far as I have,” says Michelle. She competed at the National Championships with the flu and a broken toe, but still managed to squat 125kgs, bench press 65kgs and deadlift 155kgs, “I know I can do better and I am looking forward to competing again,” she says. Michelle trains five days a week powerlifting at Results Gym in Nelson and is coached by Jason

ITM Cup TIppIng

Hylkema. “She works incredibly hard, there are not many girls as driven as her when it comes to lifting heavy weights, she is in a league of her own. Each training block she is consistently improving. If she continues progressing, she can achieve whatever she wants in powerlifting,” says Jason. Michelle will compete in Melbourne on her son’s 17th birthday and has promised to bring him home a medal. Michelle says her goal is to represent New Zealand at the Powerlifting World Champs one day.

What a stunner of a weekend that has just gone. Warm, beautiful sunny skies, albeit with a little wind thrown in for good measure. It wouldn’t be a Labour weekend if the weather was perfect, however Saturday morning was the pick of the days with boats galore at Tasman and Okiwi Bay boat ramps. Gusty winds made fishing difficult on Sunday and Monday, although a few DBFC members managed to sneak out in Pelorus Sound in sheltered waters and land a couple of big reds as the snapper start moving up the sound. Scallops are still plentiful and in good nick. The odd kingfish was caught at D’urville but the snapper were the winners overall. Reports of snapper ranging from 1 kg to 10kg have been caught in Tasman Bay, but still not in huge numbers yet as the water temperature is still a bit cool for them to come in, and with a wet week ahead it will further slow them down a bit more. The kayakers have informed us they have been catching gurnard, kahawai and small snapper in and around Cable Bay, as well as Okiwi Bay. Flasher rigs from 2/0 up to 6/0 hooks, with small bits of pillies, have been doing the damage. Last Sunday, the Dawnbreakers

Fishing Club had their first club social day, held at The Tasman Bay Cruising Club. Over 50 members attended making it a great turnout for the season opener. It is a great way to meet like-minded people in a social environment and find out what’s going on fishing-wise in your own back-yard. As an example of how the club helps its members, we are actively promoting safety on the water, by encouraging and discounting the price to members to partake in a Day Skippers' course. We believe that everyone who owns a watercraft would be safer having done the course. We have also organised weekends away as well as day trips on the club calendar. We also have regular guest speakers on a variety of topics every month. Our guest speaker this month from MPI Fisheries (MAF) was able to go through the ins and outs of the rules regarding catching cod in the Marlborough Sounds, size/bag limits on finfish, and the laws on the use of longlines. It was very informative and enabled members to have points clarified that they were not sure about. To join or find out more about the club, email us at dawnbreakersfc@ gmail.com

The swimming pool at Hampden St is officially open for business. The pool opens today for the summer and, despite the sometimes cool temperatures outside at this time of year, those in the pool won't feel it as it's fully heated. The pool is the only outdoor swimming pool in Nelson city which has lifeguards on duty when it's open to the public, but another major selling point is the heating that sees the main pool sit at 26 degrees. "It's safe, it's family friendly, it's just a great place to be," says Nelson South Swimming Club recorder, Fiona Lulham. The club runs the pool on behalf of the school and opens it to the public every day of the week. The pool is also the home to the Patterson Swim School. The Nelson South Swimming Club was also a winner in the Car Company $10,000 Charity Drive this year, and with the winnings they've ordered some inflatables to help attract more families this summer. "We were really fortunate to get some money from the Car Company so we've used that to buy some really cool inflatables, it's like a big obstacle
