Students find their hero A Nelson fish and chip shop owner has become a hero to some local students after they read about his story to save a seagull in Nelson Weekly. Students at Auckland Point School were asked to write a report about their hero and three students did their report on Lawrence MacDonald, the owner of Haven Fish & Chips who caught a seagull to get
a fish hook out of its mouth. Lawrence says he isn’t particularly fond of seagulls but he couldn’t “let the little bugger suffer”. The three students showed Lawrence their story which impressed him so much he shouted them lunch. Marlin Samuela, Ruben Craig and Sophie Hawkens say they were
“very happy” that Lawrence liked their story, and even happier to get a free lunch. Lawrence says he was stoked to see the story they wrote and says they did a really good job. The students say they wrote the story because they like to feed seagulls at their school and added, “but we like fish and chips more”.
Some protesters say changes to the dog control policy in Nelson has been proposed to “clear the way” for mountain bikers on the Maitai walkway. Around 400 protesters, marched down Trafalgar St with dogs on a leash, to oppose changes to the dog control policy proposed by Nelson City Council which will require dogs to be on a leash in popular walking areas such as the Maitai Walkway above the Collingwood St Bridge and the Railway Reserve. One protester attending the rally on Saturday told Nelson Weekly that she and many of the other protesters felt mountain bikers were being given special treatment over dog owners. “I don’t think
it’s about the dogs, I think it’s about clearing the way because most of the people who use the Maitai are dog walkers and if you get rid of them it’s a clear run. You can’t put the mountain bikers on a leash.” But the suggestion has been rejected by deputy mayor Ali Boswijk who says there needs to be more control around dogs in Nelson. The organiser of the event, Elizabeth Dooly, was also keen to work with mountain bikers, but did agree that it seemed dog owners were being shoved aside for mountain bikers. “I am determined that when we all get together, we are going to share these amenities. I know from the bottom of my heart that an unleashed

“No I don’t. Most of the dogs I encounter are always really friendly, so I don’t see what the big problem is.
“On a leash definitely. They shouldn’t be roaming freely. I’m a dog owner and dogs should be under control and their mess cleaned up.”
“No definitely not because a happy dog is one that can wander freely. As long as owners keep control, why not let them?”
“So much depends on the type of dog and how many people are around. It’s hard to see one black and white rule applying to different situations.”
Council told to ‘bark off ’ FROM PAGE 1 dog is a far happier creature than a leashed dog and a leashed dog is far more afraid of swishing bike wheels coming up than an unleashed dog that can get out the way and in a hedge,” says Elizabeth. Ali, a dog owner, says the line of thinking taken by some protesters is just speculation and the main concerns are around people not controlling their dogs and people who don’t clean up after their dogs. “It may well be that it would make it easier for mountain bikers and I suspect it would, but it is not the reason for doing it,” says Ali. “You have runners and cyclists, cyclists think that dogs need to be controlled more, because clearly they see it as a danger issue. I think sharing paths between walkers and mountain bikers is just as hazardous, it’s just the nature of it so it’s just a question of working out the best way.” Several people who spoke to Nelson Weekly asked for their names not to be used in
print, but suggested that the council is favoring one group of people over another. “Dog owners pay a registration fee and basically you can’t take public land off the public and donate it to one interest group, it can’t be done and it won’t be done.” Elizabeth, who organised the protest in which an estimated 400 people and 250 dogs came to demonstrate their opposition at the church steps, says that the advocacy group Nelson Dog Lovers are hoping to sit down with other users of Nelson’s amenities and workout the best use for everyone. Both council and advocates say the best thing to do for people concerned about the changes is to put a submission in, with Ali adding that suggestions of how reach a compromise will be of the most use to those considering the changes. Submissions must be received no later than 5pm on Monday, March 5 and people who wish to speak to the council in support of their submission will be given the opportunity at a hearing at 9am on Tuesday March 20.

Members of the Access Home Health team that will be taking part in the Relay for Life. They are from left; Geraldine Barnes, Raewyn Borlase, Jennine Marshall, Katrina and Oakleigh Wetzelberger, Jo Kara and Sharon Bryant. Photo: Jonathan McKeown.
Teams prepare for cancer fundraiser For the staff at Access there are “numerous” reasons to be involved in the Cancer Society’s Relay For Life, which is why the Nelson-Tasman healthcare organisation has a team registered for the fourth time in the biennial event. “Cancer effects everybody, I don’t think I know anybody who hasn’t been touched in some way by cancer,” says Jo Kara, regional manager at Access. That statement certainly holds true for the 10 members of the Access relay team, as a lot of their clients have cancer. “Equally, a lot of our staff have had cancer and are survivors. Some of our staff are currently undergoing treatment
for cancer,” says Jo. The relay, which starts at 4pm this Saturday and finishes at 9am on Sunday, is also a great exercise in team building and a chance to give back to the community, says Jo. Access staff members have been raising funds through garage sales and have eight raffles on the go, raising over $1300 dollars for the cause already. For those who have participated before, they say Relay For Life is as highly emotional and character building. “It has various effects on you at different times of the day. The first one is the survivor’s walk and that’s a real tear-jerker. Then there’s the
carer’s walk and that’s another tear-jerker. But then its down to business and everyone is chatting, gossiping and meeting up with old mates,” says Jo. Perhaps one of the most poignant moments occurs at dusk when the Candlelight Ceremony is held to remember those lost to cancer. This is traditionally when a lot of the community who are not involved come along to show their support. “The final lap is a big hurrah because it’s just a huge achievement. There is a real high that comes from the team building, the effort, the fun and the courageousness of those involved,” says Jo.

A new anti-amalgamation group called Your Community Your Choice has been set up in Tasman and announced yesterday that it will be hosting scholar Owen McShane at a free lecture next month. This year Owen has been invited to present papers on local governance at five international conferences; one in Sydney, two in India, and two in the United States. He will be speaking in Nelson, 3pm Thursday 15 March at Seifried Estate on ‘Amalgamation: Impossible Dream or Achievable Nightmare?’, according to a statement released yesterday. Despite his busy schedule, Owen’s passion remains firming rooted in New Zealand local governance, so he readily accepted an invitation to come to Nelson to present his views and research. “[Internationally] a fairly clear picture is emerging. We have been seduced by the benefits of size. While many of us believe ‘small is beautiful’, we have stood aside while our political and bureaucratic decision makers have worked on the premise that ‘bigger is always better’.” Owen will be speaking at Seifried Estate, Redwood Rd, Appleby on Thursday March 15 at 3pm. Entry is free and for bookings e-mail info@yourcommunityyourchoice.co.nz or phone 027 262 0107.

At four years old Nelson girl Ella White will finally get to celebrate her first real birthday. This is a leap year and tomorrow, February 29, is the leap day, a day Ella was born on four years ago. She is unaware of the quirk but her mum Tracey says it will be nice to celebrate her birthday on the actual day. “We started celebrating it on February 28 but it didn’t feel right so for the last few years we have celebrated it on the first of March,” she says. This year though the White’s are happy to be able to celebrate Ella’s birthday on the proper day. “It will feel good to actually have a birthday on the right day for Ella,” says Tracy. They are planning a party with her friends from the Brook Kindergarten with bouncy castles, plenty of party food and drink.

The Nelson Giants are the most successful sports team in Nelson ever, and they are the biggest show in town.” says David. “It’s important that we as the biggest mall in the top of the south, are supporting them.” Richmond Mall will also be sponsoring the noise crew. Bar Berlin The 1920s was an insightful and creative time; the war had ended, culture underwent a dramatic boom in music, dancing and nightlife. Men were coming back from the war, keen for a good time. Women were bucking their former repression, cutting their hair and dresses, listening to jazz and smoking and drinking in public. This is the vibrant atmosphere that you’ll experience when you come to have a cocktail at the Bar Berlin Cocktail Lounge. There’s nightly entertainment, with the Performance Cafe open mic night every Wednesday, Trivia Quiz Nights every Thursday, live piano on Fridays after work, and live bands playing weekend nights. Last week saw the first Bar Berlin Trivia Quiz Night, with a great turn out and a lot of fun had by all who came along. Bar Berlin, formerly Baby G’s, is run under the experienced partnership of Marlo Ferguson and Urgent Sinclair. They lead a team of five, and put an emphasis on quality and consistency. The bartenders are all highly trained and knowledgeable, so if you’re not sure which of the extensive range of cocktails would best suit your taste, they can advise

Nibbles and bar snacks are always available, from wedges and mezzE plates through to pizzas if you’re feeling peckish. You can relax with friends on the comfortable cushioned indoor seating or enjoy the setting sun in the spacious outdoor courtyard. Fortnightly on Fridays a Tango night is held, where anybody can enjoy a dance. Burlesque is on once a month, the next being March 3, with the New Ladies of Burlesque. Whether you’re coming for after work drinks or looking for a more refined night out, come enjoy the music, drinks and atmosphere of Bar Berlin.

Another purple patch Nelson is set for a purple patch of good feeling says the founder of Purple Cake Day as preparations near completion for the annual fundraiser. Purple Cake Day was a huge success on its inaugural outing last year and this year’s event on Thursday appears to be heading towards an even bigger show.
Got news tips? Call us first.
Dozens of Nelson businesses and schools are taking part by wearing purple and cupcakes will be on sale throughout the region. Purple Cake Day was started by Emily after the death of her husband and two children in the 2010 Haiti earthquake. The day works alongside established children’s charities.
Emily says feedback for this year’s event, which is reaching countries all over the world, has been “humbling”. “It’s never too late for people to get involved., Simply by wearing purple on Thursday and donating you are taking part and that’s what we’d like to see, the whole of Nelson covered in purple for one day.”

• Four container ships, one car carrier, 11 large fishing vessel movements, and a yacht to the super yacht berth kept the port moving and shaking this week. • Kayakers have started to become a danger to themselves and others as again last week there were several incidents where the pilots had to delay a berthing or departure because a kayaker or two were going to get in the way. • Please ensure that you stay close to the red beacons coming in or out of the channel. That way a pilot should not have to concern himself about you. Preferably even stay out of the channel altogether. • Anchoring: There are more boats anchoring in the harbour than before so I would like to remind you of a few things. Port Nelson has the largest tidal range in the country. Ensure you put out enough scope (anchor warp) for high water and strong currents; Ensure the scope for high water is not going to have you swing into a mud bank at low water; Do not anchor in or near the main channel; Be courteous to other vessels around you and do not anchor within their swing circle; If your anchor does drag, do not just pay out more warp. Lift it and anchor again; A danforth anchor is a better anchor than a grapple or ploughing The Nelson sand/mud seabed. If you get back to your boat and find it missing – I didn’t take it. (Usually- I will if it becomes a hazard to navigation). If in doubt- don’t go out. Dave Duncan, Harbour Master/Marine Operations Manager.

More than 70 girls, together with the support of families, leaders and members of the community tackled a mountain biking obstacle course, Taekwondo, Zumba, Hip Hop dancing, sack races, brain teasers, hula hoops, stilt walking and skipping. It was also a chance to encourage adults to join the ranks of leadership. Across the region, there is an abundance of girls in Mya Styles and her fellow Girl Guides try their hand at hip-hop danc- the organisation but more leaders are still needed ing with Eclipse Dance Studio at the ‘Get Going Girl Challenge’ and Girl for the effervescent group of youngsters. This Week
Love story in adrenaline capital Nelson Weekly will be profiling one of the nine Jens Hansen Love Stories finalists each week leading up to the Nelson Wedding Show in May. This week we hear the story of Mike and Justine. Readers will vote for the overall winner to be announced at the Wedding Show.
It was January 11th, 2010. I was sitting in the sun at Jazz in the Park, and it was absolutely love at first sight. That night I said to my Mum - “this is the man I will marry” - and the last year and a half has been so amazing. On October 1st 2011 Mike gave me a ‘packing list’ and I thought he was taking me to Taupo or Rotorua. When we got to the airport Mike handed me my boarding pass – to Queenstown! After checking into our amazing hotel room, and enjoying a beautiful day in Queenstown, he asked me to change into a nice dress for dinner, and to pack a bikini. Given that it was fairly cold and going to be dark by the time we finished dinner, you can imagine there were Mike and Justine. a few questions asked, but no hints given!! I was told at dinner that we would be picked up at 8.30pm to go to a mys-
tery destination, which turned out to be the Onsen Hot Pools, where we were taken to our own private room. The sight was amazing; Mike had organised the ‘3 C’s’ candles (50!), champagne and chocolates. The room had a massive door that lifted up to show a beautiful view down to the Shotover River and across to the snowy mountains, all lit up by the moon. Last, but not least, all the stars were out – it was amazing. Once I had got over the shock of the room, I turned around to see Mike down on one knee, holding out a little box. Tears flowed and after some really special words were said, Mike asked me to be his wife, to which my reply was - “Oh my god, yes! Oh my god, oh my god, yes, yes, yes!!!” The next five days were bliss. Mike had also organised an overnight cruise on the Milford Sound, which was a perfect way for us to enjoy the engagement together. I am definitely one happy and VERY lucky girl :)

Scouts from the region’s eight divisions combined for a camp up Wairoa Valley over the weekend, where they got a taste of the great outdoors. Scouts had to make their own campsite entry, engage in tug-of-war, skid down the muddy mud slide, throw wet sponges at the leaders, eat a gutter full of banana split and participate in many more fun activities. Hyundai wins global marketing award The 2012 Hyundai Global Marketing Conference in Singapore was a grand occasion for Hyundai New Zealand, where they picked up for the first time the top award: The Marketing Award for the Best Television Campaign of 2011. Hyundai New Zealand’s Elantra “Steel. Paint. Design” television campaign topped the four finalists selected for Best Television Commercial. The entries were selected from different regions and each entrant selected was asked to submit their best marketing campaign from 2011. Hyundai Motor Company (HMC) Australia, HMC Korea, HMC Italy and Hyundai Motors New Zealand were selected as finalists by a panel of HMC judges.
Hyundai New Zealand’s submission, the Elantra launch campaign, introduced the all new Elantra to New Zealand and used HMC’s amazing story of build quality and production strength to bring credibility to the product. Did you know that Hyundai makes its own steel, the only manufacturer in the world to do so? Did you also know that their paint process includes 14 coats, applied to the entire body to produce a flawless finish? Well these and other interesting facts were put together in a campaign to launch the all new Elantra. Hyundai New Zealand’s chief operating officer, Tom Ruddenklau is jubilant. He comments “The Elantra campaign was fantastic. It built on the

platform of consistent rational messages that support the purchase decision, creating a deeper and more meaningful relationship between Hyundai and New Zealand consumers. It is the best-selling Hyundai model globally, and locally here in New Zealand, the Elantra has gained a 400 per cent market share increase since its release in June 2011.

Nelson has always punched above its weight on the football field and part of that comes down to the dedication Nelson Bays Football puts into promoting youth development. Jeremy Brockie has gone on to represent New Zealand at the FIFA World Cup and is now scoring for fun in the Hyundai A-League, but NBF chief executive Clive Beaumont wants to make sure Jeremy won’t be the lone Nelson lad on the professional scene for
much longer. New Zealand Football’s Whole of Football Plan continues to roll out for junior football players as the country’s governing body aims to push on from the All Whites’ success at the world cup. In addition to the Whole of Football Plan, Nelson Bays Football will be introducing a Federation Talent Centre in Nelson. A submission has been put forward to New Zealand Football in relation to ASB Premiership participation in Nelson. Nelson Bays Football has been in charge of the bid for ASB Youth League inclusion. TUESDAY 28 February 2012
Gateway ProGramme The programme is beneficial for the student as well as the employer. The goal is to give students real world experience of an industry they're interested in, which can let them know whether they enjoy it, or have a natural affinity with the career. For students who may not have had a job yet, it gives them a realistic idea of an employer's expectations and what skills or subject areas they need to work on to excel at that career. Students who have undertaken the Gateway Programme are looked upon highly by prospective employers and the reference from the school and employer are a valuable addition to a resume. Nayland College's Gateway Programme continues to open doors for students. The initiative began in 2007 and has been placing students within local businesses for one day a week, allowing them to gain invaluable on-the-job experience. The Gateway Programme is available to students in Year 12 and 13, where they are taught basics that are an asset to any workplace. This includes First Aid as well as Health and Safety Training. The school then places each student in a workplace or industry that they would like to experience. The student gets to nominate a workplace, and the school is usually able to put students where they want to be, from Trades to Events Management and Aviation.
Businesses that are involved in the Gateway Programme receive students hoping for a career in their industry, freshfaced and eager to learn. It's a way to trial an employee for a full time position after the student graduates, or to do casual or holiday work. Students as well as the employer have the chance to see if the fit is right. Students who have been placed with companies through the programme have been hand-selected for the opportunity and for that employer. They are required to have good grades and good attendance rates, as this will reflect their work ethic. A contract is held between the student, the employer and the school, to reflect a real employment contract and to demonstrate to students the significance of the opportunity
they have been given. For each student the school keeps a record, documenting the process from placement through to the skill set learnt on the job. “Every student gets individual attention, because they're on an individual programme,” says Andrew Riordan, Gateway Coordinator at Nayland College, “it takes a lot of time but the payoff is so strong.” Andrew encourages the students to stick with an employer for a term, even if they begin to have doubts, as these may simply be due to nerves over being in a new environment. If they reach the end of the term and still think it's not the career for them, Andrew doesn't consider this a failure, as they have learnt something about themselves. They can rethink their career path and work towards that instead. The Gateway Programme makes up a part of the school curriculum. The students complete units of work and gain credits which count towards both NCEA and their industry qualification. As well as the life and work skills gained, Gateway puts students on the path to an apprenticeship, as

When the Gateway Programme started at Nayland College in 2007, there were 35 students enrolled in the course. This year there is almost twice that number and the programme has gained a good reputation with employers. While some were hesitant to be involved originally, those concerns quickly vanished when they saw the quality of students coming through the programme and the level of determination they show. Many employers continue to support the school each year, with some taking on several students since the Gateway Programme began. Nelson Alarms and Peter Laing Electrical is one of the companies that have had great experience with students from the programme. They now employ Patrick Dillon, a former Gateway Programme student from Nayland College, after a very successful placement. Recently Cameron Polglase has been placed with the company through the programme and he says he found the programme to be highly beneficial. The work he has done with the company has put him on the path to getting his Level 3 Certification with ETITO (Electrotechnology Industry Training Organisation), in Electronic Security, as an Installer. “The Gateway Programme is an ideal way to help kids find or confirm their career path,” says Peter Laing, “it also gives us a chance to assess them, and see if they're the right fit.”
Employers who would like to take on students through the Gateway Programme can contact Andrew Riordan, in the Careers Department at Nayland College.

Add 6-8 cloves of peeled garlic (to taste) A sprinkle of sugar (about a dessertspoon) Good grind of black pepper and a sprinkle of sea salt Drizzle with a good quality olive oil and add a good slurp of balsamic vinegar. Scatter over some fresh basil leaves and put all in the oven at approx 120 degrees, uncovered, for about 4 hours. The tomatoes should be very soft and the juices will have collected in the bottom of the pan. I then pop them into
plastic containers and freeze them. This makes up the base for all my soups, spaghetti sauces etc right over the winter and the flavour is very intense. All you do is thaw them out and blitz in a food processor. I do this instead of bottling and feel that flavour is better and it is much less messy to do - just lazy really.
Tips
Thisks wee
Keep checking for insects – aphids are still about on new growth – spray with Beat a Bug, Confidor or Shield, Kiwi Care (No insects) etc. Thrips are the scourge of summer. There are many varieties of these beasties and they love to shelter on the undersides of leaves near to the main veins. They can be controlled with some of the sprays mentioned above but on reading an article by Rudd I felt this would be the way to go. He suggests a series of sprays with Neem oil. It just puts them off their food! Spray two to three weeks apart and this will cover the nymphs as they develop and will also take care of any eggs and babies that may emerge through the season. They will then not eat, and drop off the plants – and die.
Q& A Q: Mary from Atawhai asks: Do you know how to get rid of a large area of bamboo? It is quite big and tough and I would really like it gone! A: There is no easy answer to this Mary and it will be expensive. There are not many products out there to deal with this successfully but one that should work is Amitrole. It is a strong poison so use with care around any desirable plants, and if it is on your neighbour's border do let them know what you are doing as it could affect plants on their side. Vigilant is another herbicide gel but you would have to cut the bamboo down and then apply this to the freshly cut stems. It is easier to use and less invasive than spraying. Roundup may work with the addition of Pulse penetrant, and is better for the soil as it is biodegradable but I feel it may be a boy on a man’s errand (if you get my drift). If all else fails call Nelmac. They may be able to dig it out! Keep harvesting from your vege patch and enjoy this great time of year in the garden,
Robyn

League continues to grow after registration day Tigers, Taniwha, Cobras, Wolves, Rabbits and Vikings were roaming Tahunanui Playing fields on Saturday hunting for athletes at the Tasman Rugby League open day. And rugby league is enjoying a bumper harvest ahead of the 2012 season starting on March 24, as the Richmond Rabbits join the competition, taking the total number senior teams to seven. With league legend Ruben Wiki holding a Roots Camp last weekend and ‘the Mad
Butcher’ Peter Leitch visiting next week, the Nelson-Tasman region has strong support from the league community around New Zealand. The open day was a chance to grow that support locally. “It was a fantastic day, we had about 40 new registrations bringing total numbers for the senior competition to about 180 to date,” says Sharon Tarapipipi, secretary for Tasman Rugby League. Teams from around Nelson are still keen
to hear from anyone who wants to give league a go. “Anyone that is interested in rugby league, whether you’ve played before or a just starting out in a new code, feel free to approach us or get in contact with your local club,” says Sharon. Contact details for each club are available on the website at www.tasmanrugbyleague.co.nz. Some clubs are also looking for people to come in at a sports administration level, with spaces available for committee mem-
bers and volunteers. One such club, the Victory Vikings, say they want to make a really positive impact on their community this year, and are looking for like-minded people. “The Victory Vikings can play a big part in the community of Victory Square as role-models and mentoring through sport to get the kids around here involved. That’s what I’m pushing and you’ll be seeing some interesting and positive things come out of that,” says Aaron Waharoa.

Connor gets NZ call up Stoke/Nayland cricketer Connor Neynens has been selected to the New Zealand under 19 cricket team. Photo: Phillip Rollo.
Nayland College’s Hayley Ottman competes against Golden Bay High School at the Tasman Secondary School Tennis Tournament on Friday. Nayland College’s mixed team was the best of the Nelson region competitors at the Tasman Secondary School Tennis Tournament held at the Tasman Tennis Club. Only girls and mixed competitors took part with the boys squaring off in Marlborough yesterday. Waimea College were too good in the girls sector. Nayland College number one had to overcome Golden Bay High School 4-2 to claim the mixed title. Aidan McKenzie beat Aiden Toder 6-2, 6-2 and Lucas Hoegner beat Hamish Clark 6-0, 6-4. In the girls Hannah Waine had a convincing straight set victory over Amy Hurt 6-0, 6-1 while Amelia Dewhurt lost to Frances Clark 6-4, 5-7 and 11-9. Nayland then won the boys doubles 6-1, 6-4. The girls defaulted, still giving Nayland the overall victory. Photo: Phillip Rollo.
Connor Neynens has had two reasons to perform this season, but now that his efforts have seen him selected for the New Zealand Under-19 cricket team, the pressure is now on to cement a spot in the side ahead of the world cup. The 18 year-old has been playing for Stoke/ Nayland this year. His performances this season have always been backed by a desire to push for the New Zealand side, so there was a certain amount of relief when the all-rounder got the final call up on Thursday morning. “Yeah it’s been a long time coming really. I wasn’t too confident, I didn’t have the best trial and I got injured on the first day, so I wasn’t able to play a full part in the trials. But I’m pretty stoked,” he says. The New Zealand Under-19 side will take on Australia, England and India in a quad series in Townsville next month, before another 15-man squad is finalised ahead of the ICC Under-19 Cricket World Cup back in Queensland just four months later. Connor spent part of last year playing in England and says the level of their opposition should not be underestimated with the majority of the English Under-19 squad playing at coun-
try cricket level. “The Aussies are awesome as well. Most of them are probably professionals.” While the weight is off his shoulders for the next month, Connor knows a strong performance in the black jersey will all but guarantee him a boarding pass to the world cup and a potential place in the Central Districts squad, following his involvement in their youth setup. Connor is likely to be used as the fourth seam option for New Zealand and will bat in the middle order. The 2008 New Zealand cricket team was captained by current Blackcap Kane Williamson and also featured Tim Southee. Doug Bracewell and Tom Latham are two players from the last world cup that have pushed on to higher honours. New Zealand has been placed in Pool B at the 2012 world cup alongside Pakistan, Scotland and Afghanistan, so getting out of the group should not be too difficult. Connor is currently playing for Nelson in its zone 3 Hawke Cup match against Hamilton. His season was highlighted by a six wicket haul against Marlborough just prior to Christmas.

Nelson's Hamish Tomlinson gets spun sideways by Keith Anderson of Christchurch in the South Island Street Stock Champs on Saturday night. If any of Nelson’s streetstock drivers set themselves the goal of finishing in the top 15 at the South Island Championship, they would have been disappointed. Well - all except for one. Nelson’s Gordon Ingham finished 11th place, despite completing just one lap in the final heat, to finish top of the locals, behind a plethora of Christchurch drivers. Fourteen of the top 15 place getters at the Tahuna Beach Holiday Park Speedway came from Woodford Glen. Keith Anderson was the overall winner in the 26-car final. Photo: Blair Hall/Photoaction.
