Students find their hero A Nelson fish and chip shop owner has become a hero to some local students after they read about his story to save a seagull in Nelson Weekly. Students at Auckland Point School were asked to write a report about their hero and three students did their report on Lawrence MacDonald, the owner of Haven Fish & Chips who caught a seagull to get

a fish hook out of its mouth. Lawrence says he isn’t particularly fond of seagulls but he couldn’t “let the little bugger suffer”. The three students showed Lawrence their story which impressed him so much he shouted them lunch. Marlin Samuela, Ruben Craig and Sophie Hawkens say they were

“very happy” that Lawrence liked their story, and even happier to get a free lunch. Lawrence says he was stoked to see the story they wrote and says they did a really good job. The students say they wrote the story because they like to feed seagulls at their school and added, “but we like fish and chips more”.

You can’t put the mountain bikers on a leash.” But the suggestion has been rejected by deputy mayor Ali Boswijk who says there needs to be more control around dogs in Nelson. The organiser of the event, Elizabeth Dooly, was also keen to work with mountain bikers, but did agree that it seemed dog owners were being shoved aside for mountain bikers. “I am determined that when we all get together, we are going to share these amenities. I know from the bottom of my heart that an unleashed
