SKATE TOUR FINALE: BMX winner Tom Bassett-Eason, of Nelson, competes at the Tasman Skatepark Tour on Saturday. The eight competition tour concluded over the weekend with Neale Park and Jubilee Park both hosting events. The skate event was won by Jake King who took out every event other than the Nelson competition while the scooter category was won by Mita Timpson who also had a similar success record. The event was put on by Tasman District Council and the major prizes of a bike, skateboard and scooter were supplied by Cheapskates and Village Cycles. Photo: Phillip Rollo.

Mayor wants new stand at Trafalgar Park

Andrew Board

A new multi-million dollar grandstand at Trafalgar Park should be built to help attract more top events to the city, says Nelson mayor Aldo Miccio. Plans for a new 2000-5000 seat stand re-

placing the old 1000-seat stand that runs along Trafalgar St have been loosely drawn up as part of discussions around a Rutherford Park upgrade. But Aldo says it’s time it was put on the council table and it would turn Trafalgar Park into a top quality venue with the ability to host international

concerts and more sporting events. Around $3.8 million was spent on an upgrade of the park ahead of the Rugby World Cup in 2011 and Aldo says the time is right for another upgrade ahead of the FIFA under 20 world cup in 2015. “This would leave a legacy for the city and

would see Trafalgar Park being a premier venue in the South Island. We already have NPC rugby played here and national league football in the summer, but it would be great to attract more events, including

Momentum building for Waimea Village buyout Andrew Board With a court case looming and another proposed increase on the horizon, a buyout of Waimea Village is shoring up as the best option for the two warring parties involved in the ugly levy increase saga at the village. Since 2010, the lease levies for each of the 171 residents at Waimea Village have risen from $80 per month to $182.76 and owners Michael and Carolyn Wright have indicated another increase will be proposed by them in the coming weeks. Residents at the village own their own homes and pay normal council rates. The levies are for management services including removal of green waste and repairs and maintenance of the village, something the residents argue has not been done. Last week Nelson Weekly first reported the idea of the residents buying the Wrights out

of the village. At a special residents meeting on Sunday, that was the option that residents preVillage owners Michael ferred, with and Carolyn Wright. many saying they were sick of the Wrights and were refusing to pay the latest increase ordered by an arbitrator last year. Tasman District councillor Kit Maling told the residents a cost analysis would need to be done but if each of the 171 residents bought a share in the village and an independent board managed it, costs could be kept much lower than they are now. He was sending a letter to each resident today for their thoughts on the idea.

Michael Wright says a buyout option was presented to the residents committee on Wednesday and he would welcome the opportunity to sell it to them. Residents committee chairman Jerry Rowland says he sees the buyout of the village as the only long-term option. “It’s the only solution. Under the current owners this [levy increase] situation will not change, we need to be the masters of our own destiny.” The proposal is long term though and residents are still pushing ahead with court action against the Wrights as they believe money paid to them for the repairs and replacement fund hasn’t gone to the fund, which they believe should have more than $100,000 in it. Michael disputes that and says a separate account, as ordered by the arbitrator, was founded last November but he would not say how much money was in the fund.

Mayor wants new stand at Trafalgar Park FROM PAGE 1 music and sports.” A covered stand running the length of the park would cost between $6 million and $10 million says Aldo, but funding could come from freeing up land for apartment and town houses on the excess land between the back of the stand and Trafalgar St, as well as leasing retail and corporate box facilities facing the field. “My view is that it could be funded primarily by the private sector so ratepayers don’t have the cost and debt burden. Land is very valuable down there and the council could use that to our advantage.” He believes if the upgrade was to go ahead Nelson could host the Wellington Phoenix football team, the Warriors rugby league team and national rugby teams like the Maori All Blacks. “This part of our city including the river could quickly become an active hub. The land is expensive so it’s important it’s utilised well and the council is maximising the use and the revenue from it.” In plans drawn up by council staff, shared clubrooms could go under the main stand, including city rugby clubs and FC Nelson football club. Aldo says the development could be hugely exciting for the city and it would create a real hub of activities at the park.

Nelson’s croquet test Nelson croquet is preparing for the biggest month in its history. Next week the top players from New Zealand and Australia will compete in a trans-Tasman test match at the Nelson Hinemoa Croquet Club at Rutherford Park and just two weeks after that it will host the national golf croquet championships. Club president Annie Henry says it is an exciting time for the sport in the region and spectators are welcome to come along and watch the best in Australasia do battle. “We are very excited about it, this is a fabulous opportunity to watch how the top players play and enjoy their skill.” New Zealand has won seven of the nine previous test matches, which are held every two years in alternating countries. Annie says it will be a close match but she is backing the home side. “I can’t say anything else,” she jokes. There are no local players in the four men and four women squad but Annie says it will be a great chance to show off the sport to Nelson folk and some of the 70-strong club will be on hand to explain the game for those that need to brush up on their knowledge of the sport. Annie says there is a perception that the sport is for “grey-haired” people but that isn’t the case and there will be three teenagers competing across the two teams. Hosting the test match would not have been possible without the support of Nelson City Council, says Annie, and the lawns are in top shape ahead of the two-day competition. • Players will be practising on Saturday and Sunday on the lawns with play starting on Monday and continuing on Tuesday.

FIFA checks out Nelson Trafalgar Park on radar for 2015 under 20 football world cup Andrew Board Nelson’s bid to host games in the 2015 under 20 football world cup is largely dependent on how many cities organisers hand matches to. Nelson was one of nine cities visited by FIFA – the governing body for football – over the past ten days and its top delegate says the decision on whether six, seven or eight regions will host games has yet to be made. “We must have a minimum of six and up to eight but we haven’t made that decision yet,” Rhiannon Martin told Nelson Weekly while in town last Wednesday. Nelson mayor Aldo Miccio, a huge supporter of the bid, says if only six cities are selected it shortens Nelson’s odds considerably. “It does make it harder but hopefully we get seven or eight venues and we are one of them,” he says. Rhiannon says it is FIFA’s desire to spread the games out as much as possible but facilities had to be up to scratch. Looking around Trafalgar Park during her visit with seven other FIFA officials, she said the stadium would need some work. “But we saw from your hosting of Rugby World Cup that it can be achieved so we’ll see.” She says she would like the world cup – the second largest FIFA competition in the

Harbour master concerned about safety Habour master Dave Duncan has issued yet another plea to paddle boarders to take safety precautions as he fears it’s just a matter of time before one gets in serious trouble and dies. He says harbour master staff caught several private paddle boarders in Nelson Haven without a life jacket or leg strap connected to their board. He says the currents in the haven are extremely strong at the moment with water moving at a metre and a half per second. “If someone gets caught out or falls off their board and they don’t have a leg strap or lifejacket they will be in serious danger.” He says the companies offering paddle boarding lessons do take safety precautions and he’d like to see the rest of the paddle boarding community follow their lead.

Visiting couple ready to leap into marriage Local marriage celebrant Lester Oakes is used to getting phone calls from loved up couples, but the latest call has taken him by surprise. Lester says he couldn’t quite believe his ears when he took the call from a German couple who want to tie the knot in the air above Motueka next month.

Jan Schlesner and Susann Lasch are travelling to New Zealand from their home in Hamburg, Germany for their wedding and will arrive in Nelson a few days before the big day, just in time to complete formalities and to have a practice jump. Lester will jump with the couple from

16,5000 feet immediately following the service. “I didn’t hesitate to say yes,” says Lester. “It will be a first for me on both fronts. I’ve performed a few unusual wedding ceremonies, but never in a plane, and I’ve certainly never skydived before.” He believes that the skydive marriage

could be a first in Nelson. “To the best of my knowledge this is a first for Nelson. It certainly challenged the staff at Births, Deaths and Marriages when we submitted the application for a wedding licence,” he jokes. The wedding will take place on February 9 with Abel Tasman Skydive.

McDonald’s after drive thru record McDonald’s Nelson is hoping a new drive thru record will see the store win a national competition for its speed. The store has a record of 84 cars going through it in one hour, set at least ten years ago over the Christmas period. If it can beat that it will likely jump ahead of a New Plymouth store and claim a national competition for drive thru performance, which ends on February 10. The current record is also the regional record, including stores in Tahuna, Richmond and Motueka. To encourage people to use the drive thru between 12noon and 2pm this Thursday, McDonald’s Nelson is doing a $2 Big Mac deal, with a limit of two per car. It is also giving away a Big Mac voucher to every car that uses the drive thru, no matter

what the purchase is. “It could be a mayonnaise packet or a $20 lunch box, each car will get a Big Mac voucher to use on another day,” says store manager Matthew Hall. In the national drive thru competition the Nelson store is eight points behind New Plymouth, based on the speed of its drive thru compared to last year. Each store is competing against its times from last year and if Nelson breaks its drive thru record it will earn 20 points, giving it an almost unassailable lead. Area supervisor Vaughan Warren says the staff are excited about the challenge and with the deals they’re offering they hope to get a really good response from the public. “We ready to go and looking forward to showing how quick and efficient we are.”

Locals fight Tasmanian fires Andrew Board Sitting on a plane bound for Tasmania and its brutal bush fires earlier this month, six Nelson volunteers were nervously counting down the hours until they were in the thick of the action. Then the pilot announced that kiwi fire fighters were on the plane and the Australian passengers broke into applause. “It’s was really humbling, we didn’t expect that and it was quite a shock,” says Nelson man Ash Oliver. And that was before they’d even come face-to-face with a Tasmanian flame. The group of rural fire fighters were tasked to fight fires in the most remote areas of the battleground and worked alongside an Australian team. Dave Newton says it was extremely hard work. “It was tough terrain, but similar to what we’ve experienced here before. But they were long days and very hot so you really felt like a rest at the end of the day,” he says. Ash says he drank about ten litres of water a day and on top of his fire overalls and jacket, wore chainsaw chaps and was carrying a chainsaw with his fire fighting equipment. The Nelson crew was in Tasmania for 14 days and included four staff from Nelmac including Dave, Ash, Stu Saunders and Steve Wilkins and two from the Department of Conservation, Bill Franklin and Matt Page. Dave says they were

treated like kings when away from the fire. “The people there were really hospitable, they really treated us well. The food was good, the accommodation was good and they were extremely grateful we were there.” Ash says he learned a lot from the experience and after years of training it was nice to put it to good use. “I’ve been a part of the rural fire network pretty much since I left school and I always said to my wife if we get the call up I’m going. It was a great experience and something I would definitely do again.” Dave says with changing weather patterns it’s only a matter of time before a similar bush fire starts in New Zealand and the more experienced fire fighters we have the better. “Training is training but this was the real thing and you learn so much more from that. I think we came away with a lot of knowledge from it. The Australians really knew what they were doing, it was very professional and very well organised.” It seems the aeroplane applause was well earned. The Nelson crew helped the fire from spreading to a national park and left with a sense of achievement. “We felt like we made a difference and we did our bit. It’s good when you go over to these things that you feel like you’ve contributed and done your bit.” The Nelson crew arrived home last Wednesday.

Museum building closes over earthquake risk Andrew Board

Until a decision has been made the building will remain closed says Peter. “We have three things to consider here, the safety of our staff, the safety of the public and the safety of our heritage in the building.” Peter says there are various issues with the building, one of them being the amount of paper it has stored in it. “The amount of paper is an issue, it’s a dead weight. It’s no problem when it’s still but when there’s movement it can be a hazard.” The facility at Isel Park houses the majority of the museum’s heritage collection, including all of its photographic glass plates and is where the majority of its staff are based.

A meeting held tonight could determine the future of the regional museum’s research facility at Isel Park. Last week Nelson Provincial Museum chief executive Peter Millward issued a statement saying the building had failed an engineering evaluation of its performance in an earthquake. He later told Nelson Weekly that the building, built in the 1970s, was well under the 33 per cent threshold needed to be deemed not an earthquake risk and he was waiting for more information ahead of a Tasman Bays Heritage Trust board meeting tonight where the options for its future would be discussed.

Sarau festival still on after fire Phillip Rollo

A devastating fire to the Moutere Hills Community Centre won’t stop this weekend’s Sarau Festival – an event first created to celebrate that exact facility. The blackcurrant-themed festival will still be held outside the community centre and thanks to the generous support of some key sponsors, marquees, electricity and portable toilets will be brought in to make up for the fire damage. Speaking just days between the fire and the event, organiser Jenny Leith says the fair’s point of difference is its blackcurrant theme, which ties in well with the region known for its blackcurrant orchards. “There will be entertainment throughout and that includes a bake-off, history tent, more than 100 market stalls,” she says. “We’ll have all of the usual favourites including a kids can cook caravan and there will be a new guest chef. There is lots of fantastic stuff.” Jenny admits the festival would be slightly different

support to the Moutere community. “It’s a relaxed environment and hopefully people can come and still have a good time in the area. It’s a fun way to spend a late Sunday afternoon.” While Upper Moutere was not exactly the blackcurrant capital of New Zealand, the

Car warrant changes upset industry A change to the rules around warrant of fitness inspections for cars is disastrous for the industry, say local experts but the government argues it will save motorists time and money. Associate Transport Minister Simon Bridges announced the government’s decision on the Vehicle Licensing Review over the weekend which includes six-monthly checks to become annual inspections for cars registered after 2000 and new cars will only require checks every three years after the initial inspection. He said the changes would benefit motorists by $159 million a year. At least $1.8 billion over 30 years would be saved in inspection, compliance, justice and enforcement costs. But the industry has slammed the decision, VTNZ chief executive Mike Walsh says the plan could be “another leaky homes”. “The Ministry of Transport’s own figures predict an increase in injury accidents and even deaths, but we believe these figures have also been greatly underestimated. Some estimates predict an extra 10 deaths and 100 injuries on our roads each year.”

region’s climate makes for near perfect growing conditions and there is a high number of orchards in the area. The Sarau Festival begins at 3pm this Sunday and festival-goers are being encouraged to wear purple hats. Entry is five dollars per adult and children are free.

from payday to payday. We have very little to show for our hard work. Our New Year’s resolution is to get our finances organized and save for a house. Where do we start? A: 1. Record what you are already spending. Look at 3 months of your bank statements and write down all that you have spent or saved in that time. 2. With this information:

 Write up a weekly budget for your household (include yearly costs such as insurance, and car expenses)  Record weekly debt repayment.  Total all expenses and take this total away from your weekly income.  Look at this budget and decide what you want to change in the future. Prioritise needs over wants (needs include power, rent/ mortgage, rates, water rates and food).  Commit to follow your new plan.

3. Together, decide what you want in your life, and write up ideas of how you can achieve these goals. (One of your goals is to save for a house) 4. Before you start saving, pay off high interest debt. 5. As you save, ensure you keep a good credit rating. Also research mortgage rates and kiwisaver fund availability for a first house. It is never too late to start saving for your goals. I wish you well! Contact us for help with your New Year’s resolutions We offer free, confidential advice for everyone.

Cycle trail’s route to Mapua now compete Sinead Ogilvie Around 270 people jumped on their bikes on Saturday to celebrate the opening of a purpose built cycle bridge and the Nelson to Mapua cycle trail. The blessing of the $250,000 suspension bridge over the Waimea River was the final piece to the coastal route and stage one of the Tasman Great Taste Cycle Trail. Tasman District Council mayor Richard Kempthorne says he was extremely happy to see the coastal route completed and that the Great Taste Trail “was and is a real partnership between the council and the cycleways trust”. says she was happy that so many people chose to come to the opening of the trail and “make a bit of noise about it. It’s absolutely great to see it finished and to see the number of people using the trail”. The bridge, constructed by Kitsons, was blessed by Kaumatua Andy Joseph before being officially opened to the public. Malcolm Saunders, previous chairman of the Tasman Wheelers cycle club praised the efforts of both the TDC and the Nelson Tasman Cycle Trails Trust for completing the first stage of the trail saying it was a “tremendous achievement for everybody”. Fiona says the opening of a Mapua to Lower Moutere route in July will see the Nelson to Kaiteriteri loop completed.

Plenty of feedback for Habitat: Two weeks ago I featured in an article in your paper and I’d just like to say thanks to your readers and let you know that we had close to 30 responses from a wide range of people and from all over the region. That is a tremendous response and far more than I’d normally expect at this late stage. Thank you very much to Nelson Weekly for your support for Habitat for Humanity. Rob Silcock, chair of Habitat for Humanity Nelson. Help for drama student: Tell Claudia Peters (who featured in last week's Weekly trying to raise money to attend drama school in New York) that the Rotary sometimes support local people in their efforts to better themselves. This may be an avenue for her. (Via text). Enough of daylight saving: Let's have an end to daylight saving. It makes it so difficult to get to sleep. Do our bodies ever really adapt? Many people start work early in the morning, why can't we have some daylight then? (Via text). Do you make the most of the sun? Mowed the lawn, weeded the garden, almost up to date with the washing. Kids have been at Nayland Pool this afternoon. I think this may be my own solo mum holiday, until school goes back. Andrea Grocott.

My husband and I have been busy. Cleaning the yard, mowing the lawn, weeding the gardens, went to church and went to visit my old dog and her mum (my older sis.) Maree Phillips. Took the labradoodles for a hike to Whispering Falls with lots of dips in the swimming holes along the way. Kathy Pantling. Waitangi tribunal concerns: Last August politicians passed a third reading of a Maori Claim Settlement Bill which would legalise the alteration and manipulation, of historical accounts to suit the demands of Waitangi Tribunal claimants. This is quite astounding for it is the thin end of a wedge for modern day historical censorship. Will early historical accounts of New Zealand now start to disappear? In 1930s Germany certain books from schools, libraries, shops etc fuelled street bonfires. The minds of mainstream New Zealanders are being so systematically manipulated that a form of oppression is beginning to develop. After thirty eight long years the Waitangi Tribunal has evolved a culture of sympathy in support of claimants. Through expensive tax funding it's become a wrecking ball, long past its use-by date. Its autocratic powers allow it to be accountable to no one. Is the constitutional lobby planning to clip its wings? Will they advocate the repeal of the Treaty of Waitangi Act 1975 and its 1985 amendment? J.M. Lincolne, Stoke.

Nelson’s footwear experts since 1948

While times may have changed this tried and tested store is one of Nelson’s most iconic, and at 65 years young is one of our oldest locally owned family run businesses. While fashion is constantly changing, Taylors has kept up and hasn’t lost the core values that saw Cliff and Eileen Taylor set up their first shop in 1948. Taylors in Richmond offered shoe repairs before stocking shoes, selling their first six pairs of men’s shoes all those years ago and paving the way for the two branch success story that it is today. Taylors is an outstanding kiwi business, growing with our community and earning their reliable reputation, selling the best in sports shoes, school shoes and work boots in the early years, now their Nelson store is about to celebrate its 20 year anniversary and both stores have evolved into specialty fashion footwear stores stocking high quality brands from all over the world. The Taylor family are still running the business with each generation adding to its history with their love of shoes and both stores are currently run by husband and wife teams Craig and Jan Taylor and Phil and Anne Taylor. Many mums, dads and grandparents can recall their favourite pair of shoes from Taylors and from that first pair of men’s shoes to the fantastic international selection on offer today, Taylors continue to leave their footprints throughout our community.

A passion for fashion for 60 years

Jays on Bridge Street is locally known as a Nelson fashion institution. The 60 year old store shows that while clothing can go out of fashion, style never does. When Jays first opened its doors it offered the world of fashion something different, the opportunity to dress a little less conservatively and to enjoy a wide range of high quality designers. It’s original 1953 slogan “fashion for the discriminating woman” still rings true today. Now, Jays remains on Bridge St and their values have stayed the same too. Owner Karen Jordan has managed the boutique for the past 11 years offering an exciting and extensive range of New Zealand and European fashion labels and fashion forward accessories. The friendly and knowledgeable team, Sandra, Rosemarie, Karen and Kymberly pride themselves on excellent customer service, counting their loyal customers as friends and they are dedicated to helping them stay fashionable. Jays have truly stood the test of time offering something unique and stylish for the fashion conscious, sharing a stunning collection of fashion for women who love high quality boutique clothing.

Gustaves Menswear is now in its 30th year in Nelson and while it’s come a long way since owners Gus and Mary Beullens arrived with their family in 1983, they are still successfully dressing our community today. Locations on Trafalgar Street were hard to find at the time but eventually Gustaves took over the lease of Nelson Auto Accessories and converted the space into a high quality menswear store. After moving a few doors down in 1995 you can still find them there at 243 Trafalgar St today. While a few years have passed since Gustaves first opened its doors and many brands and stores have come and gone, Gustaves has stood the test of time and still takes pride in bringing a diverse collection of high quality, great brands and personal service to local men. High profile designers such as Rembrandt, Cambridge, Gant, R.M.Williams, Ben Sherman, Lacoste, and Coast are a core collection of brands stocked by Gustaves today offering a relaxed and spacious shopping environment. Mary and Gus have 11 grandchildren and four children of their own and over the past 30 years they have seen many generations of other Nelsonians pass through Gustaves doors. With so many men leaving the store better dressed, they are set to see many more successful years to come.

Brad Neiman won the youth ministock club championship courtesy of three podium finishes on Saturday night. Photo: Phillip Rollo.

Ministock champ eyes move to the big time Phillip Rollo Brad Neiman never expected to be named club champion on Saturday night – but that's only because he didn't know the championship was even on. The 16 year old youth ministock driver finished inside the top three in as many races, coming back from 16th on the starting grid in the final race to finish in second place, after winning heat one and finishing third in heat two. Brad says none of the drivers were even aware the meet doubled as the youth ministock club championship because if they did, the risk of contact increases. "I'm totally rapt eh. It's given me a lot of confidence so hopefully I can go far from that," he says. "I just aimed to make up the places in that first corner and then just drive consistently to the best I can." Brad's current car is for sale as he looks to make the transition into a stockcar. While he admits the size, speed and contact will be different, he doesn't have to look far for inspiration when it

comes to young drivers making the move into a bigger car. Dale McKenzie finished second at the recent New Zealand Superstock Championship, despite being just 19 years old. Dale is dating Brad's sister and he says the pair regularly speak speedway and that he is always getting tips. Brad's father took the new stockcar out for a spin on the weekend and will drive it for the rest of the season. Brad says his goals for next year's race calendar will be to finish every race. If you are interested in buying Brad's ministock, please contact him on 0278274008 . Saturday night also saw the Accessman Tasman Thunder take out the Stockcar Suspension Development Cup with ease over the Greymouth Grizzlies. With all but three drivers left at the halfway stage, Michael Paynter and Adam Hall decided to take out the coast's John Gray before running for the finish line. When Michael took him up the wall, Adam was quick to put his foot on the accelerator and claim the win with no other car in sight. Ben Smith, Justin Hearne and Cody Teece were all non finishers.

Get some mates together and get ready for social bowls. The Tahuna Bowls Club is introducing the popular competition which involves teams of three playing social bowls on Thursday nights. The competition is held successfully around the country and organiser Peter Goodman says the format has already proven popular in Nelson. "I used to help organise it at the Maitai Club and we had up to 20 teams competing, it was great fun." The competition is perfect for all levels, including those who have never picked up a bowl before. The league will run for five weeks from February 14 until March 14 and teams need three bowlers. All equipment and advice is provided by the club and the cost is $75 for the five weeks, or $25 per player. Peter says those who may be worried it's not their scene can put those concerns to rest. "It's all in casual clothes and it is just good fun."
