Retailer: Nelson is best

A local retailer is closing his Richmond store to focus on Nelson, saying the city is a better place to do business.

Cheapskates Nelson owners Chris and Joey Kirby, say after seven years on Richmond’s Queen St they are shutting the store to concentrate on Nelson. Chris says turnover in Nelson is more than double what it is in Richmond, but rent doesn’t reflect that.

He says the introduction of Kmart and

the Warehouse isn’t good for small business owners and he’s looking at Nelson as his primary market. “Everyone says Richmond is jacked up, we know that our return on our Nelson business is still higher than what we do out there. As a small business owner, the incoming Kmart and Warehouse dilutes the amount of money out there.”

He says the two shopping centres are like “two different regions” and Nelson people

FROM PAGE 1 Trael Joass can’t feel his heart beating. Severe cramp fills his chest. He undoes his headgear and drops to the ground. He tries to breathe slowly. He rubs a pulse on his neck, a way to soothe the pain. He feels helpless.

Then, “tick”, it’s over. He gets back up and plays the rest of the rugby game like it had never happened.

The 21 year old Wanderers second-five has had the same heart problem for the past three years, and up until two weeks ago it was manageable, and he could still bust through tackles, smash opposition attackers and run with speed, even after experiencing another “episode”.

But before the club rugby final

against Waimea Old Boys, Trael’s cardiologist told him five words he never wanted to hear. “No more sport for you”.

“I said ‘you’ve got to be kidding me, right?’ I just broke down when I heard that,” Trael explains. “I just cried for ages. It’s hard enough to be told I’m not going to be able to trial for the Makos because this is the closest I’ve ever gotten, but then it’s another thing not being able to play for my club team in a final. That was the most upsetting thing for me.”

Trael has never been closer to a spot in the Tasman Makos squad, and was last week named in their “emerging players squad” which was effectively a trial team. It’s likely they will pick another mid-

fielder for the ITM Cup squad, and it could have been him.

But Trael is now sidelined indefinitely. He can’t play rugby, he can’t hit the gym, he can’t run, and he can’t do anything that will over-exert his body — not until he gets surgery on his heart. “It could kill me. Death,” he simply answers when asked what would happen if he continues to play the sport he loves, the sport he grew up playing, and the sport he hoped would be his job this year.

Trael has supraventricular tachycardia, or “SVT” as he knows it as. It means he has abnormally fast heart rhythm, and it races up

to 300 beats per minute. He will need an operation before being free to take the rugby field again.

“It just goes fast. I’ve got more electric pulses than I’m meant to. I was told just to keep playing and if I faint it’d be a sign to stop, but I never fainted.”

But it’s still a big unknown as to when he will get that operation.

Trael has a friend — another rugby player — who had a similar condition and waited three years before eventually going private.

He is meeting with his GP this week, and hopes to have a clearer idea by the end of it. If the wait is too long, he’s considering going private too.

Out of action from sport until then, Trael says he will now focus on his building apprenticeship.

Housing trust wants 250 rentals A trust set up to help locals into affordable housing is aiming to have 250 homes under its management in the next few years.

The Nelson Tasman Housing Trust celebrated its tenth birthday this month. It owns 32 homes which it then rents out to tenants at around 80 per cent of the full market value, making living cheaper for many families.

But director Keith Preston says the need is far from met and it’s currently building another seven homes which will be finished by next year.

Keith says the trust has been able to grow so much because it generally is granted 50 per cent of the housing cost by the government and Nelson City Council waives building levy fees. He says that the rest of the money is borrowed from banks.

Another $200k for Bridge St Locally Owned and Operated

Business owners say the council’s attempt to “revitalise” Bridge St is worthy, they just hope they’ll be consulted with before another $200,000 is spent.

This month, Nelson City Council finished its Bridge St project which cost $172,500 plus GST, slightly less than its $200,000 budget. For their money, ratepayers got new lighting, planter boxes, seating and blue lines painted on the footpath outside the city’s nightclubs.

During this year’s annual plan discussions, the council agreed to put aside $200,000 for stage 2 of the project.

The blue lines have been the subject of much debate since they were painted on and Shark Club owner Steve Shepperd says he doesn’t see the point of them, but he’s happy with the rest of the upgrades. “The council started off consulting really well with us, but that bears no

Pipers celebrate 90 years The City of Nelson Highland Pipe Band celebrated its ninetieth anniversary with a Ceilidh style concert that featured a feast of all things Scottish; including plenty of Haggis and Whisky. From traditional fullband performances to Celtic singing, the crowd at the Theatre Royal were treated to piping solos and duets, drum salutes, traditional tunes such as Scotland the Brave and new tunes like The Red Fox. The band was formed in 1924, and this year celebrates its strong and long-standing presence in the Nelson community with a current size of around 15 drummers and pipers. The City of Nelson Highland Pipe Band also regularly competes and are often seen performing at community events too.

‘Smart’ power meters coming to Nelson New smart power meters, which will be installed in up to 40,000 properties around Nelson and Tasman over the next two years at a cost of $15-20 million, will reduce power outages and not result in an increase in electricity charges.

Network Tasman, which owns and operates the electricity distribution network in the Nelson-Tasman region, excluding Nelson City, will be spending $15-20 million to replace existing power meters with the new smart meters starting in September.

Advanced metering development manager Andrew Stanton says the smart meters will automatically relay electricity useage to

power companies via radio signal and can provide consumers with important information about their daily and hourly power consumption.

Andrew says smart meters will also mean customers will not be required to provide keys to access houses to read internal meters, while power accounts will be based upon actual consumption, not estimates.

In the future, customers may also be able to set alarms to alert them if their power usage is too high and set energy-efficient appliances to interact with the advanced meters to manage electricity costs.

However, Andrew says the big advantage

quickly repair, or even preempt, faults. The meters will also automatically cutout when there is a power overload, reducing the average power outage time due to blown fuses from 99 minutes to two minutes.

“We will know immediately when there is an outage rather than relying on a customer to phone us with a problem. We’ll also be able to identify abnormal voltages that may be a precursor to a failure and fix the faults before they happen.”

Andrew says they haven’t yet finalised the programme for the rollout of the new meters although property owners will be notified before the meters are installed.

Breakfast Club gets young swimmers off the blocks Simon Bloomberg Reporter

It’s not a lot of fun getting out of bed early in the morning especially in winter but a dedicated group of parents and grandparents are happily doing it three times a week just to make life easier for some of the Nelson’s up-and-coming swim stars.

The Tasman Swim Club coach Andy Adair, was concerned that members of the club’s age group squad were struggling to get ready for school in time after their morning training sessions. The squad trains five mornings a week for two hours starting at 5.15 leaving swimmers only about 40 minutes to eat breakfast and get to school.

Andy suggested they could start a breakfast club to provide a poolside breakfast for the swimmers and a group of parents and grandparents are taking up the challenge.

The breakfast club was formed about a year ago and parent Lisa Dunn says it is proving extremely popular.

Lisa says they provide a variety of cereals, toast, yoghurt and drinks and a special cooked breakfast on Fridays. The breakfast club is run by parents and extended family members including George McKenzie, Garry and Jenny Smith, Delys Harwood, Mandy Bishop and Jodi McKenzie and is generously sponsored by Stoke New World. George, who is the grandfather of Sam McKenzie, says he doesn’t mind getting up

at 5.45am to help out because “it gets me going”.

Swimmer Samantha Smith, 14, who goes to Garin College, says the poolside breakfasts are not only a big time-saver, they are also “a lot more social” than quickly eating something on the way to school. Samantha says the breakfast club also means Friday morning training sessions are one of the highlights of the week. “We get waffles and pancakes and cinnamon scrolls so when you are in the middle of a hard set on Friday you always think about the breakfasts.”

Police frustrated by car thefts Locally Owned and Operated

More than 350 cars have been broken into this year, almost half of which were unlocked.

Police say they’ve been pushing the message for Nelsonians to lock their cars over the past few years, but it hasn’t had much of an impact.

For the six months from January 1 to June 30, 367 offences have

been reported to police involving the theft of property from motor vehicles.

Of these, 44 per cent, or 161 offences, have involved thefts from vehicles that were unlocked or insecure.

Sergeant Craig Barker, of Nelson, says the message is simple.

“Lock it or lose it is a very simple

message that the police have been pushing for a number of years, yet the message doesn’t seem to be getting through in Nelson,” he says.

Craig says police were aware that some people were choosing to leave vehicles unlocked to avoid damage being done by someone trying to break in.

Supporting neighbourhoods Three weeks into her new job Karen Clark already has lofty goals.

The new coordinator for Neighbourhood Support would like to see every street in Nelson with a Neighbourhood Support group.

At the moment around 400 of Nelson’s 700 streets have neighbourhood support groups and she says they work so well she’d like to see every street benefit.

“It’s a way to get to know your neighbours and the reassurance that if you are home alone and you hear a noise, you have people’s phone numbers and you can call them.”

Karen says she’s also keen to develop a bigger online presence for Neighbourhood Support and she’s really enjoyed her first few weeks.

“There’s a lot of people contact, which I’m really enjoying. The board have some definite goals which means it will be a good challenge as well.”

The majority of offences have been committed in the early evening and overnight.

Even cars parked up the owner’s driveways have been targeted by the thieves.

The most commonly stolen items include wallets, purses, money, cell phones, and electronics.

“The solution is simple -- lock your car. Even when it’s parked at home, and don’t leave valuables in your car.”

Nelson charity pumps water in Africa People in the African town of Torwood will no longer have to walk for hours just to get clean water at the crack of dawn – and it’s all thanks to the support of a Nelson charity.

A small team of volunteers from Water for Prosperity – who organise the annual Walk for Water event at Rabbit Island – returned to Torwood, Zimbabwe in June to install a further eight ground water-bores. Six of those were funded by the Emirates Airline Foundation and two were funded thanks to the generosity of Nelson sponsors and donors.

Last year, volunteers from Water for Prosperity visited the town and installed three ground water-bores, two in schools and one on council land. But to reduce long queues at those bores, and to increase accessibility, Gideon Matorino and his wife Sibusisiwe Matorino, David Barnes, Philip Catchpole and Paul Sinclair returned last month, focusing on new water-bores spread across the town and near buildings constructed in the 60s with no running water.

“There was a ratio of 35,000 people to one bore, so we thought we’d go do some more in the community to reduce the long queues and the walking distances,” says Gideon. “The installation of the eight bores and the valuable source of water have reached a far greater number of people than we thought, helping well over 20,000 children and adults.”

Gideon says the current economic situation has left the town broken. “The infrastructure is in tatters and there is no water, no power and no council services. It was heartbreaking to spend time in this town and see the widespread poverty. The people are hard workers who lost any money they had when the currency crashed.”

But despite their situation, Gideon says the residents are remarkable and remain positive, and their reception was “amazing.”

Water for Prosperity is planning to return to Torwood in 2015 to install more water-bores, and to construct basic shower and toilet facilities in a residential area which houses 1000 people. “That would be very helpful because at the moment they’re travelling two kilometres to the nearby bush, and it’s a real mission.”

Corkill heads to hospital A week after a hugely successful quiz night, Mike Corkill was admitted to Nelson Hospital and will remain there for a week.

The Nelson father of six is trying to raise $100,000 for life-saving surgery to replace his lungs.

Mike was born with a condition that makes his lungs work harder than normal. He will die if he doesn’t receive the transplant.

Last Friday, just under $5000 was raised from a quiz night, bringing his total to $30,000.

But time is running out. Mike is likely to be on oxygen full time when he is released from hospital.

He says doctors told him he was close to heart failure and he had an extra 20 kilograms of fluid on him. “I’m feeling a lot better than on Friday. Every time I coughed I was almost passing out. But I’m still positive.”

Living with Tourette's Locally Owned and Operated

Entries are rolling in for the Car Company Charity Drive, with dozens already dropped off before the deadline on August 22. Each week until the deadline, Nelson Weekly and the Breeze radio station will be speaking with an entrant about what the $10,000 would do for their group. This week we speak with the members of the Tourette's Association of New Zealand.

Living with Tourette’s means living without control of your own body.

That’s tough enough, but when another adult made fun of Nelson woman Paula Panckhurst by imitating her at a restaurant she admits it was “humiliating”.

Paula and Renee Harvey are two Nelsonians who live with Tourette’s – a neurological disorder that can cause physical and vocal “tics”. They only met each other recently after connecting on Facebook via the national Tourette’s Association page. Both say it was the first time they’ve met another person with Tourette’s. They’re hoping to raise money so they can attend “Camp Twitch” in Hanmer in October. People from all over New Zealand will attend the camp, and Paula says she’s excited to meet other people, especially children and help them.

“When I was a kid Tourette’s wasn’t really heard of, so my family just thought I had really strange habits. I was just a really freaky kid really, doing strange things. That was hard and it wasn’t until I was an adult that I had a diagnosis. It was amazing to know I wasn’t a freak, I had something that I couldn’t control.”

suppress her tics at work by using facial expressions and humming. But it does take a toll and when she gets home she says she turns into the “energizer bunny”.

For Renee, Tourette’s started when she was just 10. She was diagnosed with ADHD and was given Ritalin as a way to control it. Straight after the first pill she started “doing weird things”.

“I was doing all these crazy things and it just got worse and worse.”

The fact that it was kick-started by the Ritalin makes Renee extremely angry.

At 21, Renee now has a three year old son and her tics range from swearing and spitting to physical tics where her face and arms twitch.

Fighting back the tears, Renee says the condition is a lonely one and she just wants people to understand.

“You do get people looking and their eyes are huge and they look at me thinking I’m a weirdo.

It’s hard, sometimes I worry that I’m going to hurt my son because of my tics.”

It’s also a barrier for their personal relationships. Paula says it can be embarrassing being out in public.

“It’s about them being able to cope with it really. You’re out with their friends or your friends and you’re sitting there blinking and twitching or spitting all over your partner.”

The pair say they suspect there are a lot more Nelsonians living with Tourette’s and they’d like to meet more people with it. Camp Twitch is the first opportunity people with Tourette’s will have to meet in one place and both are busy fundraising to get there.

This is now partly the proposed route that Nick Smith is pushing for a new road to take traffic in and out of Nelson. Meaning the Rocks Rd cycle route is “making way” for changes to the current railway reserve that many Nelsonian’s don’t want to see become a main highway. If the Rocks road cycle way does go ahead, where do cyclists start and stop their journey in the same safety as they currently have with the current cycleway.

Wide enough for parking, traffic and a 3 metre walkway. Introduce a load limit and a speed limit. Use the $10 million of R funds to fix dangerous intersections with serious accident records on SH1.

This year, hundreds of businesses and workers were nominated by people from Golden Bay to Murchison to Rai Valley, and everywhere in between. There was an overwhelming response so the finalists were narrowed down to the top in each category, based on the number of nominated votes.

The awards are split into two categories – industry awards, which are judged by experts, and the people’s choice awards, voted and judged by you. So it’s important you have your say! The winners will be announced at the biannual New Zealand King Salmon Nelson Hospitality Awards event to be held on Monday 25 August, venue to be confirmed.

Tickets will be on sale at Hardys Bar. The ticket price will be $65, which includes drinks served and a three course dinner.

You can vote in as many categories as you wish, only one vote per category. Voting closes Friday 8 August at 12 noon. Voting forms must be clipped from the paper, no photocopies accepted. The judge’s decision is final and no correspondence will be entered into. Sponsors, their employees and immediate families may vote but are ineligible to win a prize.

Richmond Rabbits president Deon Charles says his side will have to be wary of Victory Phoenix Vikings who have been “the success story” of the TRL season so far, reaching their first-ever playoff. “We’re definitely expecting a big game against Victory this Saturday. We certainly know we’ve got a tough game and, if they saw the way we played on Friday night, they’ll probably be pretty confident themselves,” he says.

Both teams have similar records in that they swept all before them in the respective rounds in Premier 2, however they were without a win in the elite grade.

Only one goal separated them in their previous encounter for promotion / relegation.

While Prices had an 11-5 lead after the first break, it was one-way traffic in the second period as they built to a 23-8 lead. Nelson gained possession through the efforts of Kea McGuinnetty and Ellie Bell but they couldn’t find a clear avenue through to their shooters, who found trouble in converting.

Prices' Paige Pointon provided the intensity on the outside of the circle while Bex Watene was a menace at GD, with Joanna Andrew providing a wealth of experience as the last line of defence. Kat Soper and Brydee Stone found the circle edge well, using the pass and cut to full effect. Leigh Leigh Wiremu lead from the front and directed play, finding Emma Riddall with some deft passing.

Although Nelson won the second half 2319, the promotion was claimed by Prices 42-31. Kea was the standout for the college team as she pulled in nine intercepts as well as a lot of tip ball. Her timing was impeccable as she claimed Prices' attempts at the long feed. There was praise for Lydia Swaney and Helen Dale who both stepped in the shooting circle.

With the Crusaders taking on the Waratahs in the Super Rugby final this weekend, two Tasman Makos have been called in to replace Richie McCaw and Kieran Read at the All Blacks training camp.

Netballers take on NZ's best

Nelson competed at the New Zealand Under 17 Tournament held last week on Auckland’s North Shore.

Nelson had a great start to the tournament with a first up win against East Waikato 43-21.

The Nelson girls came out firing, with Abbey Franklin leading the charge in the shooting circle. Strong defensive work through court saw a number of tips converted. Makaila Powick was the pivotal link through court while Ariana Tekawa-Wiremu was the hunter outside the circle edge.

Wellington was a skilled team who proved to be too tough in the second game, where they suffocated Nelson’s attack at every opportunity. Poppy Restieaux and Shani McLeod-Bennett toiled tirelessly throughout the 21-43 loss.

In their final pool game Nelson lost 21-33 to Kapi Mana and 25-29 to Waitakere 2. Nelson bounced back with an impressive 42-24 win against Pukekohe. All three shooters averaged over 80 per cent, while Shani and Poppy were a formidable defensive duo where they had good body position for rebounds and pulled in a number of well-timed intercepts.

Makaila again had a high work rate at centre.

The game against Eastern Bay of Plenty went goal for goal throughout with neither team able to dominate. A crucial turnover in the final quarter was enough for the northern team to get their noses in front to record a 31-27 win, despite another strong defensive effort by Shani and Poppy. Nelson were competitive against Waitakere 2, until the final quarter when they were defeated 24-40.

Nelson were placed 28th out of the 40 teams, the same playing as last year, however there were another seven teams competing this year.
