Trolley derby takes off A record number of trolleys raced down Collingwood St in the Robertson’s Trolley Derby delighting the two thousand strong crowd. Inclement weather couldn’t stop over 100 people taking part in more than 80 trolleys, although the weather did play a part in the Resene Monarch of the Hill with two spectacular spills after the finish line. Nelson Trolley Club President Tim Bayley – who won the Monarch of the Hill – says the highlight on the day came from the Nippers. Eighteen youngsters took part in the beginners’ category. Parents ran down the hill following their children in the trolleys and quickly had to run back up the hill to start them off again, although after the fourth run the parents weren’t moving as quickly. “They just kept moving. They had about four runs and kept moving the start line up the hill so they could get faster and faster,” says Tim. “They really had a ball.” Tim says there had been a big focus on the Nippers this year and it showed with huge interest from a number of schools entering trolleys. Afternoon drizzle turned the finish line in to a slippery tarmac and some trolleys in the Monarch of the Hill had trouble braking. No one was injured in the crashes, just dented trolleys. Roberton’s Trolley Derby will also be on show in the $1.2 million film Kiwi Flyer. The climax racing scene was filmed during the lunch break in the derby.
Rutherford Park ‘essential’ to Nelson’s growth Nelson has the opportunity to have a world class city-to-waterfront space if Rutherford Park is developed correctly, says mayor Aldo Miccio. A major development of the park forms a large chuck of the talking points in this year’s Nelson City Council draft annual plan, now out for public discussion. With a proposed $58 million earmarked for the Rutherford Park area, between Trafalgar Park and the Trafalgar Centre, it is also certain to attract the most attention when the submission process begins.

then.” But it is clear Aldo backs some sort of development in the area and says it is vital for the continued growth of the city. “With Saxton Field we have a facility that is a leading sporting facility in New Zealand and once the Rutherford Park development is through to its completion – if we get the linkages right from Trafalgar Park, Rutherford Park, the sea and the city – then we have a world leading waterfront
