What a catch!
Police to drivers: We’ll be out in force
Nelson drivers be warned, if you drink and then drive there’s a good chance you’ll be pulled over. Police will be running a summer driving campaign targeting drunk drivers and people speeding, and senior sergeant Grant Andrews says they will be out in force. “We’ll be everywhere,” he cautioned. Changes to the drink driving limit came into effect yesterday, lowering the legal
limit for how much alcohol you can drink before driving. The limit was 400mcg of alcohol per litre of breath, but is now 250mcg for drivers aged 20 and over. For drivers under 20, the limit is zero. Grant says the safest rule is to simply not drive if you’ve had a drink, but those who do need to be aware of what they’re drinking. “Especially in craft beers. Some of them can be treble what a standard beer is
at four per cent. So where you think you may be having one standard drink, you may be having the equivalent of two or three.” He says every single sworn officer in the Tasman policing district is trained to administer a breath test and they will be checking. “We’re doing a lot of short, sharp check points now. Sometimes we’re only ten or
15 minutes in one place and then we’re gone again. We’ve had operations where we’ve started at two in the morning and run until midday.” Grant says the number of people testing in the 250-400 range hasn’t been a lot, but it will catch some people out. Nationally, about 100 people are killed and 2000 injured each year from crashes involving alcohol.
Running race a gala ‘with sweat’ Andrew Board Run Mahana is more than a running race, it’s a “gala with sweat”. Co-organiser Greg Dykzeul coined the phrase after another hugely successful Run Mahana at Woollaston Estate, with 700 people lining up for either the half marathon, 10 kilometre or five kilometre run or walk, and the Mahana Mile for the kids. “We wanted to create a festival atmosphere so there was something for everyone, an event that families could do together,” says Greg. “By having the food and drink vendors it makes it more like a festival. People can have something to eat or drink after the event and just relax. It’s like a gala, a gala with sweat.” On the course, Commonwealth Games representative Julian Matthews was pipped in the 10km race by Hayden McLaren. Hayden set an impressive new course record with a time of 32.03. Paula Canning won the women’s 10km race with a time of 39.32. Full results at nelsonevents.co.nz

Cruise ships coming to town The first cruise ship to arrive in Port Nelson this summer is due to dock this Saturday. Caledonian Sky is the first of five visits to Nelson this summer. It is set to arrive at 1.30pm this Saturday, bringing 114 passengers to the region along with its 71 crew. The Europa, which also visited last summer, will be the biggest ship to come to Nelson with 450 passengers, and is the only one to stay overnight. It will arrive on Boxing Day and stay one night and will also visit
Golden Bay and Kaiteriteri. The L’austral will then visit Port Nelson on January 17, 27 and February 10. Each time bringing 260 passengers. Nelson Tasman Tourism’s international marketing manager, Loren Heaphy, says the ships are fairly small but with “mobile” passengers. “Most of the passengers are on pre-arranged tours, however we do expect there to be some requests for winery and art tours as well as a number who come to shop in Nelson.”
NEW CITIZENS: Thirty-four Nelsonians were officially sworn in as New Zealanders last week. The new Kiwis were originally either American, Bhutanese, British, German, Indian, Kosovan, Myanmari, Russian, South African or Vietnamese. They were sworn in at the Nelson City Council chambers. BROOK RESERVE: Nelson City Council is seeking written suggestions from the public about how the Brook Recreation Reserve could best serve both Nelsonians and visitors to the region. To make written suggestions, email: submissions@nelson. govt.nz, with Brook Recreation Reserve Management Plan in the subject line.

Three long-serving teachers to retire Tahunanui School won’t be the same after three of its longestserving teachers, with a total of 72 years service at the school and 104 in education, announced their retirements this year. Principal, Paul Drummond, will leave at the end of term one next year, after 38 years in teaching and 16 of those in charge of Tahunanui, while teachers Carol Climo and Sue Curnow leave at the end of this year. Carol has been teaching at Tahunanui for 30 years after starting in 1975 and taking maternity leave from 1980 to 1990, while Sue has 26 years at Tahunanui - Sue has also taught at Nelson Central, Henley, Richmond and Mapua. Paul says he’s decided to leave to “look at new opportunities” and spend more time with his family. He says it is a good time to leave because the school is in “good hands”. “I made a promise to myself that I would leave and try something else and I couldn’t break that promise. I haven’t got anything lined up yet but I’ll leave this stage of my career feeling very positive about the contribution I have made to the community.”

Although Carol says she will miss the children and their parents, as well as all the staff at Tahunanui, she is looking forward to spending more time “going fishing” and seeing her six grandchildren. Sue is also planning to keep busy with a “truckload’ of things on her to-do-list, including travelling and seeing more of her six grandchildren who live in Nelson. She is also a keen genealogist and hopes to find her husband’s long-lost half-sister who was born in Austria, and plans to take up astronomy. However, Sue admits she will also miss the school’s children and families who, she says, are part of a “great community”. “I’ve really enjoyed teaching at Tahuna and all the schools in

Nelson. There’s no such thing as a bad school in Nelson and all the children here are lovely,” she says. Board of Trustees chair, Lee Corlett, says all three have been a big part of the school and “will be missed”. “Carol is the face of our school and is probably the best new entrant teacher in Nelson, and Sue has been the driving force behind our senior science programme. And Paul’s vision has seen our school become more successful across the whole range of academic, sporting and cultural achievements. “It’s a sad time but it’s also exciting. We are going into the future for our school.” Lee says the board expects to name Paul’s replacement on December 15.

Free sun block for city visitors
Claudia Hagerty and Jess Moser take advantage of the sunscreen put up on the cathedral steps over summer by the Cancer Society. Photo: Jessie Johnston.
A trial of free sunblock on Nelson’s Cathedral steps has proved so popular the Cancer Society is considering finding even more places to put it next summer. In late October, the Cancer Society, with help from NZME, decided to donate a large bottle of sunscreen to the public, which is now located part way up the cathedral steps on a lamp post, and have since kept it topped up and on hand for anyone
who needs it. So far the concept has been popular, with the bottle being refilled regularly. Cancer Society manager Linda Lucre says it could spread. “We know there are lots of other areas it could go as well, but we will review it the end of the period [in March] and think about whether and where we will put them up next summer, as it needs council approval.”

Grey Power president seeks vote to keep job Andrew Board
Nelson Grey Power president Neville Male is putting his leadership to the ultimate test this month, holding a special general meeting where members can vote to oust him. Neville has been in the job since 2012, but last week he faced a vote of no confidence from his executive. He decided not to stand down at the time but has instead called a special general meeting where members can vote whether to keep him in the job or remove him. Nelson Grey Power has around 9500 members and Neville says he has been trying to modernize the organization. Through that process he has upset many of the organisation’s volunteers, who have lead the charge to remove him. Neville says he is confident that he has the support from the broader membership. “The unethical tactics being used by those who are opposed including writing anonymous letters and releasing confidential material to the media, and publicly criticizing my leadership can no longer be tolerated. I, therefore, am now going through the procedure to requisition a special general meeting of the membership to seek a re-endorsement of the mandate for change.” The date for the meeting hasn’t been announced yet but Neville says it will likely be held early next year.

Nelson embalmer Lyndsay Pyers was recently presented with the Top Practical Noel McNee Memorial Award and Top Overall Supreme Student Award, on completion of her National Diploma in Embalming. Lyndsay has been in the funeral industry for eight years and decided to study embalming at the Wellington Institute of Technology as the next step in her career. Eight students from around New Zealand completed the 15 month course, which included embalming theory and practice, anatomy, physiology, pathology, microbiology and chemistry. “I was very surprised and happy to receive the awards, I was the oldest in the class and it was hard to get used to study, but all the hard work was certainly worth it,” Lyndsay says. Lyndsay is now qualified to carry out embalming and restorative procedures on dead human bodies for a wide variety of cases within the funeral service. Lyndsay is very proud of her chosen career and openly tells people what she does for a living, and says everybody is interested to hear about it.
Nelson's Lyndsay Pyers with her national award for embalming. Photo: Monique Bergman. “My job is about preserving the dignity of the deceased and providing the family with a pleasant memory picture. For me, it is a privilege to be able to help families at an extremely difficult time. You build a relationship with them and, now that I am a qualified embalmer, I can be there for them throughout the entire funeral process,” Lyndsay says. Although she gets satisfaction from her work, she adds the hardest part of the job is working with children and young people. “In my profession, you only have one shot and it has got to be perfect, there is no dress rehearsal. For me it is not just a job, it is an absolute passion,” Lyndsay says.

Ulysses toy run this weekend The annual Ulysses Toy Run is expecting a big turn-out this year – as long as the weather holds off. Wet conditions were blamed for the small turnout last year, as the event traditionally attracts hundreds of motorcyclists from Nelson, Blenheim, West Coast and even Canterbury. The 29 edition of the run will be this Saturday, December 13. The toy run sees riders and their pillions decorate themselves and their machines to enter into the spirit of this special time of the year. The Toy Run features motorbikes and scooters of various engine sizes, all adorned with various gifts for distribution to the region’s children by the local branch of the Salvation Army. Nelsons Ulysses Branch Coordinator John Macdonald, says the run is a favourite ride for Ulyssians across the top of the south. “The aim is to give gifts to the needy, and the Salvation Army follows our convoy to collect toys from people on the roadside. There is always a huge turn-out of bikes and spectators alike, who line the streets to watch and support the appeal. It really brings out a wonderful community spirit,” says John. The public can come to the assembly point in Richmond to donate their gifts to the Salvation Army and to see the extensive range of scooters and motorcycles dressed for the occasion. Riders will assemble at the Papps Car Park in Cambridge Street, at 10am, with the convoy leaving an hour later. The motorcycles will make their way into Nelson, through Richmond’s town centre and Stoke, before travelling down Trafalgar Street in Nelson to finish in the car park at the Trafalgar Centre.

Nayland student off to the Navy Hopefully Nayland College graduate, Isaac Reardon, isn’t prone to sea sickness, as he is one of just 40 people around the country to make it into this year’s navy intake. A career in one of the defence forces had always been on the table but, like many school leavers, deciding exactly what he wanted to do wasn’t easy. Tossing up between university or service was finally put to rest after talking to a Navy recruiter at a careers expo and, after a gruelling selection process that included physical and mental testing and a formal interview, Isaac is now looking forward
to life aboard the ship and studying for his trade as an electrical technician. for kids. Graeme Bloomfield. Dogs and kids on leads should keep everyone happy, surely. Pat Donovan. Grey Power battle: Nelson Grey Power President Neville Male has been subject to the most vicious smear campaign I have ever seen, for trying to move Nelson Greypower forward and promote the elderly. The strife is in response to replacing an outdated, contracted, financially-orientated role with a Manager, who would attract membership, establish relationships with like organisations, seek sponsorship and advance the Society more widely in keeping with what the 2000's require. The Committee unanimously voted for this change, but behind the scenes another agenda was in play to retain the status quo at all costs. Even our loyal volunteers were made pawns in this saga. Neville has absorbed some shocking things such as a committee member attempting to override his authority, being falsely accused of unauthorized spending, a major sponsor's prize presentation held without him knowing, locks changed to deny him and executive members access to records. There are many more serious omissions. It is vital that the members get the facts. A special meeting to support a vote of confidence in him and the decisions to move forward is being requisitioned. The members must decide what is right.

Public art: Re your article on spending $100.000 of our money on more art for Nelson. I would sooner see it spent on loan reduction, and maybe to save another rate rise, BUT, if they are hell bent on spending it on art, then: surely a bronze statue of Lord Nelson would be more appropriate. I suggested also, some time ago, that the Trafalgar St bridge could have six bronze statues of the men/women of Nelson and International fame put along the sides of the bridge, three on each side. This would be a crowd puller especially for tourists, and is part of Nelson's heritage, surely. We have Lord Rutherford, Cawthron, Tyree brothers, William and Fred, Wakefields, Cptn Arthur and Col. William, plus the Maori who saved the shipwrecked at Cable Bay, Huria Matenga. This could be similar to the Charles Bridge in Prague. Lord Nelson could replace the Asparagus woman at the end of Trafalgar St which is a waste of ratepayers money. At least the early settlers statue around the Port and Abel Tasman at the beach remind us of our heritage, and are not some way-out, made-up, weird concoction. S.Marris.

Hop and beer history put on show Locally Owned and Operated
Nelson’s hop-growing and beermaking histories have been put on display, with the official opening of a dedicated museum at Founders Heritage Park. The Nelson Hop and Beer Museum was opened last Tuesday by Nelson mayor Rachel Reese, with the help of volunteers whose efforts have made the museum possible. The museum was funded with proceeds of the Founders Book Fair and has three distinct rooms – the hop kiln, the brew house and the office. The hop kiln gives visitors a feel of how Nelson hops are dried, and even features the distinctive hop kiln roof line that are still seen throughout the Tasman district. The brew house demonstrates the brewing process from start to finish and has an example of early 1800s brewing equipment, donated to Founders from breweries over the years. The office has information on the history of local brewing companies from 1843 to 1943. Rachel thanked the volunteers of the book fair for their efforts in raising the funds for the museum
and says it will be a unique tourism attraction. “As the Craft Brewing Capital of New Zealand, it’s only right that we have a Hop and Beer Museum that backs up our claim to fame,” she says. “This latest addition to Founders will be of great interest to Nelsonians and visitors alike. People can explore and understand our brewing heritage and then pop right next door and enjoy one of the top craft beers of the region, in a visible working brewery.” Founders Heritage Park facility manager, Maria Anderson, says initiatives such as the Hop and Beer Museum and Nelson Craft Brewing Trail are great for the Nelson region. “This museum is a key visitor attraction within the park, which complements the existing exhibitions well. We hope it will attract more paying visitors with an interest in craft beer and brewing heritage, whilst remaining free to locals all year round.” The museum, like the rest of Founders Heritage Park, is free for Nelsonians.

Alzheimers Nelson has new patron Monique Bergman Members of Alzheimers Nelson at the afternoon tea to officially welcome new patron Gail Collingwod, from left, Helen Webber, Gail Collingwood, Heather Lackner and Sue Cochrane. Photo: Monique Bergman.
Become a teacher. Gain a globally recognised qualification from the UC College of Education.
Gail Collingwood stepped down after 18 years as a Nelson City councilor last year, but says there is no such word as “retire” with plenty of things out in the community to do. When Alzheimers Nelson phoned to see whether she would be interested in becoming their new patron, she accepted, as it was a subject close to her heart. Gail has experienced dementia within her own family, most recently with her sister, who is in her 80s, diagnosed with dementia. Her grandmother was also diagnosed in the 1950s, when there were no care facilities available and patients were put into psychiatric care. She remembers as a young child visiting her grandmother at Sunnyside Hospital in Christchurch and the stigma that was associated with it back then. She says there is still a stigma attached to people with dementia and mental illness today, with some people from the older generation believing they will be institutionalized. “The reality is, it’s not like that at all now, I would like to hope that I am able to talk to people about the changes in support, and encourage others to be more accepting and change their perception of people diagnosed with dementia. The more that people are open and transparent about these types of illnesses, the more it will become the norm,” says Gail. Alzheimers Nelson supports over 450 people diagnosed with dementia and over 500 carers within the Nelson-Tasman region. Heather Lackner, Alzheimers Nelson manager, says that care is provided in the home and there are different ways of working to support families. “The issue is around diagnosis, a 2012 report states that only 60 per cent of cases are diagnosed. This means potentially, there are a further 40 per cent of people living with dementia in New Zealand that have not yet been diagnosed." For further information on Alzheimers Nelson visit their website at www.alzheimers.org.nz/ nelson or phone 546 7702.

Toy library to host fun day The Nelson Community Toy Library is hosting a fun day this Saturday. The annual fun day is held on the last day the toy library is open for the year, when all toys are due back. It’s a celebration of play with family members, a chance to promote the toy library and a fundraiser - with the drawing of a raffle. The bouncy castle and Fairy Lou are free, with a small charge for a balloon creation from Flossie and for delicious cakes, coffee and tea. Roger
Wilde will be performing some laid-back tunes while everyone has a good time. The library is run by volunteer mums and dads, with just one part-time paid librarian. Funding for the toy library comes from applying for grants and fundraising initiatives, such as the fun day. It’s a popular community asset with about 130 families joined up. The fun day is this Saturday, December 6, from 9.30 to 11am at 50a Grove St.

The Bishop’s school Nelson’s first school was started in a hut on Church Hill in 1842 by the Reverend C.L. Reay. The following year Bishop Selwyn approved a larger school and bought half an acre on the Nile Street site for
fifty pounds. He named it Bishop’s School. Building began in 1844 and there were various additions before the school closed in 1895. It still stands today with a Class One Heritage rating.

This image is believed to be of Godfrey John Hammond, as he was the only man listed on the Cenotaph Database under the name ‘ Hammond,’ who was a sergeant in the Canterbury Infantry Battalion. It matches closely images held by the Harkness family. The man depicted in the negative can be identified as a sergeant and a member of the Canterbury Infantry Battalion from the badges and shoulder flashes he is wearing. Hammond was born on 30 June, 1889, in Appleby. On the Cenotaph database his next of kin is listed as Alexander G. Hammond (father), Richmond, Nelson, New Zealand. Before World War One Hammond was working as a farmer for his father in Richmond, Nelson. He joined the Canterbury In-
sergeant Godfrey John hammond (1889 - 1934) (serial No. 6/247). fantry Battalion during World War One and embarked on 16 October, 1914, from Wellington for Egypt. He was invalided back
to New Zealand on 25 September, 1915, and finally discharged on 18 February, 1916. Hammond died on 13 November, 1934.

The team at Rowan Dron Electrical are passionate about harnessing energy from the sun and using it to power households. They have completed numerous solar installations throughout the region and their customers now enjoy dramatically reduced power bills. With a PV Solar System, PV solar panels convert sunlight into DC (Direct Current) electricity, which is then passed through an inverter creating viable AC electricity. This AC electricity is used to power the household, while any excess electricity you generate can then be sold back to the electricity companies. Because they use light from the sun (and not heat) they will continue to generate electricity even in light cloud. The cost of PV solar panels has fallen dramatically in the last few years while, at the same time, electricity costs just keep on rising. A typical 2kW system can now give you a 6.9% return on investment! That is more than your bank will pay and it means that your system will definitely pay for itself. The bigger the system, the bigger the return. The cost of installing a PV Solar System will vary depending on the number of panels you need and the complexity of the installation. An average family home will need a 2kW system which, fully-installed with panels and inverter,
costs around $8,000, excl gst. How long it takes for a system to pay for itself varies depending on the size, but an average system takes around 6-8 years to pay for itself completely. While it is possible to sell electricity back to the grid, not all power companies will pay you for your excess electricity and the prices they offer can vary. Rowan Dron Electrical can explain how to get the best price for your surplus generation. Their entire team are qualified solar installers, as well as being Certified Electricians with additional manufacturers training. They use the best quality gear, all manufactured in New Zealand and Europe, and their PV panels carry a 25 year production warranty, while your inverter is warranted for between 5 and 10 years. Rowan Dron Electrical are happy to provide a no-obligation, free, onsite assessment. Once they are confident that a PV system will work for you, they will put together a free quotation based on the correct system for your site and your power needs. Because they are electricians, they can advise you on ways you can maximise the savings from your system. Contact them for more information or to arrange your free household PV assessment. Garin College student, Sam Harrison, will be travelling to Turkey next April to provide social media coverage of the centenary of the ANZAC landings at Gallipoli, after winning a nation-wide competition. In September, Sam, 16, was shortlisted for the competition, run by the Ministry of Youth Development and New Zealand Defence Force, to select three youth ambassadors to attend the World War 100 commemorations. The applicants had to run a week-long social media campaign about the ANZAC landings, and last month Sam was selected as one of the three winners who will travel to Gallipoli to cover the event. Sam created a Facebook page and used Instagram for his social media campaign which was judged on its creativity, originality, and ability to engage the audience. The Facebook page contained posters, video clips and photos about Gallipoli, and received 897 likes. "I designed all the posters myself and did all the filming and editing. I probably spent around two or three hours a day creating things for the page and then I had to respond to

"That was the best part - seeing all the people get engaged with the campaign. I also enjoyed finding out about my ancestors." Sam says one of the most viewed videos was entitled the ANZAC Challenge and shows him replicating a soldier's dash across no-man's landing carrying a rifle and 20kg pack. "I filled my pack up with weights and attached a Gopro to my body and went for it," Sam says. "It was really hard it gave me an appreciation of what those soldiers did every day." Sam says he entered the competition because he has a passion for family history and he wanted to honour his ancestors who fought at Gallipoli.
It helped him understand the great sacrifice they made at Gallipoli and "how indebted we are to those who fought all those years ago". In a video on Sam's Facebook page he says, "most of all I'd like to remember the sacrifices of my forebears", Eustace, Robert and Arthur Turner, Huia Wyatt, Walter Wyatt and Dudley Harrison. Although Sam has attended Anzac Day services around Nelson and Tasman 'for as long as I can remember' he says, "it will be amazing to be part of such an historical occasion" when he joins 10,500 guests, including 2000 New Zealanders and 8000 Australians, at the commemoration in Gallipoli on April 25.

This Summer their name says. They are proud to offer customers a professional, reliable service, and all the advantages of a team with close to 68 years tyre knowledge. They stock new and second hand tyres, Fuel Efficient Tyres, a huge range of alloys, and of course, provide quality and dependable workmanship throughout all their services. U Save Tyre Co is also happy to be welcoming the skills and experience of Michael Neame to the team. Michael has been in the industry since leaving school and running tyre stores here and in Australia for the last 13 years. His wealth of knowledge can now
be added to an already strong pool of experts. He is also looking forward to offering customers the service and options they deserve, thanks to a multi-branded store that has access to an extensive range of tyres. Keep your family safe on the road this summer, come and talk to the U Save Tyre team. Nelson City Council IS THERE A SWIMMING OR SPA POOL WHERE YOU LIVE? Council are in the process of auditing all pools in Nelson. Do you
know your obligations under the Fencing of Swimming Pools Act 1987? This legislation is in place to protect children from drowning. Sadly, it seems in Nelson a large number of pools do not comply with the legislation, raising significant safety concerns. Portable pools that can be purchased from many stores are being considered for Christmas presents. These must comply with the Fencing of Swimming Pools legislation if the depth
of the water is 400mm or more. Not taking swimming pool fencing seriously can have deadly consequences. All pool owners should know their obligations. There is information on the Council website, www.nelson.govt.nz, search on swimming pool consents. If you need help or have questions, please call the Pool Compliance Officer at Nelson City Council on 546 0200.
Come on in and welcome Michael Neame to the U-Save tyre team. Come and see us for an extensive range of energy efficient tyres, perfect for those long summer trips.

CHECK YOUR POOL
IF you have a pool, make sure that it's fully locked and fenced off.
Summer is here so take a few minutes to do this pool check list. Even when you are not using your pool, you still need to ensure it is safe and secure to minimise the chance of drowning
My pool fence/barrier is at least 1.2 metres all the way around the pool. My pool gates/doors self-close and latch from 150 millimetres, and the latch
is at least 1.5 metres high or can only be accessed by reaching over the gate.
I have no openings in the pool barrier greater than 100 millimetres. I have a backflow preventer on the tap I use for maintaining my pool's water level so I don’t risk contaminating my household water supply.
I don’t have anything climbable closer than 1.2 metres from the top of the fence/
barrier. (Check over the boundary fence. My neighbour hasn’t inadvertently created a ladder by stacking things against the fence).
I only have pool-related activities in the pool area. It’s not a good place to dig my garden.
Search swimming pools at www.nelson.govt.nz and see what else I can do to keep my pool safe.

Touch a family sport for Andersons Monique Bergman
The Anderson family says it is easy keeping in touch, all you have to do is play touch. All three sons have been chosen to represent Nelson Bays at the Junior South Island Interprovincial Touch Series which will be held in Christchurch later this month. Henry, 13, is in the under 15 boys team and both Simon, 15, and Ben, 16, are in the under 17 boys team. The boys’ father Wayne, a former New Zealand touch
player, is coach of the Nelson under 17 side and mum, Megan, a former Canterbury representative player, will be assisting the team as manager. Eldest son Ben, is following in his father’s footsteps and has recently been selected to represent New Zealand in the men’s under 21 touch team. At only 16, he will play three games against Australia in Sydney, January 2015. Touch has always been a part of family life for the Andersons, with the boys having watched their parents play before tak-
ing the field themselves. “We’ve learnt heaps off dad, and mum has always been there to support us and is our taxi. It is good having dad as a coach because we can always talk about the game over dinner and go out in the backyard and run a few plays,” says Ben. The family will be on the road together again when Ben and Simon play for the Nelson College senior touch rugby team, under the guidance of coach Wayne, in the Secondary Schools Touch Nationals held in Auckland this month.

NelsoN College Cricket First XI The Nelson College 1st XI Cricket team have qualified for the Gillette Cup National Schoolboy finals in December. The tournament takes place in Lincoln and it includes the top six Secondary Schools in New Zealand who play a round robin tournament over the week December 8-12.
ticipated that these four will form the backbone of the performances at Lincoln, but there is also a formidable back up crew. With a very lengthy batting line up and outstanding array and variety in the bowling attack Nelson appears to be in a solid position to push on and achieve their own slice of history.
To qualify we had to first win the Top of the South tournament (the D’Arcy Cup), which was achieved in February. From there the squad travelled to Palmerston North to despatch Palmerston North Boys High School and New Plymouth Boys High School to qualify for Nationals as the best Central Districts region school. This is a unique achievement as it is the first time in the College’s one hundred and fifty eight year history that the 1st XI has achieved this feat.
Other teams that qualified were: Kings College (Auckland), St Pauls Collegiate (Northern Districts), Hutt International Boys School (Wellington), Kings High School (Otago) and defending champions Christchurch Boys High School (Canterbury). Nelson College cricket thank all sponsors, supporters and families for the help and assistance we have received this season.
The College currently boasts four members of the Nelson men’s squad; Josh Clarkson, Joel Harden, Adam Leonard and newly promoted Liam Clark. It is an-

It is my opinion that unethical tactics are being used by those who are opposed including writing anonymous letters and releasing confidential material to the media and publicly criticizing my leadership can no longer be tolerated. I therefore am now going through the procedure to requisition a SPECIAL GENERAL MEETING of the membership to seek a re-endorsement of the mandate for change. The date for this meeting will be notified to you in due course. It will be very important for a many members as possible to attend that meeting.

ATTENTION ALL NELSON GREY POWER MEMBERS You will have all read much adverse publicity in the local media over the past 2 months most of which has been part of an orchestrated campaign to stop the progress that is being made by me and the Management Committee, to bring the organisation into a more modern era. I was given the mandate to do this when elected President in October 2012.

This publicity has suggested that there is wide spread opposition within the membership to what the Committee and myself are trying to achieve in making Nelson Grey Power a highly respected and valuable community organisation. To put it on the record out of a membership of over 9000 ONLY 17 PERSONS have publicly voiced opposition to what we are trying to do. Many more have contacted me to state their strong support for the change.
