Car parking ‘should be free’

The return of free parking on a Tuesday in Nelson’s CBD still doesn’t cut it for some retailers who say they want free parking to apply every day.

Some local business owners are calling on the council to dump the parking meters and stick to a simple time limit instead to entice more shoppers into the city centre.

Jays Fashions owner Karen Jordan describes the intiative as “confusing” and “random” and has called the issue “a major mayoral candidate question for retailers”. She thinks that people who choose to come into the city for their shopping shouldn’t be made to pay for parking and the fact that they do is pushing people out of the city.

“It should be free. Retail at this time of year is hard enough and as for just offering it on a Tuesday, well it’s a bit of a joke really.

Mayor Aldo Miccio says although the free parking on Tuesdays initiative has been successful, he is keen to extend it further.

“It has been working really well, I want to extend it to Mondays and Wednesdays as well next year.”

He says that the council needs to be doing more to influence shopping patterns during the quieter periods of the year but he would not consider free parking all year round because of the money the council collects from it.

“It’s a revenue source for the council so to get rid of it all together would mean an impact on rates.”

Robyn Neil, owner operator at Simply Travel, says she believes Nelson would be a lot busier and lose fewer shoppers to Richmond if people didn’t need to pay for

parking. She would like to see free parking days expanded, or introduced year round. “It seems logical. People go to Richmond to shop because of their free parking, and we’re trying to encourage more people into town.”

Richmond Unlimited interim chairman Nathan Smith says free parking throughout Richmond’s CBD is definitely a major drawcard for both shoppers and retailers. “Free parking is a huge positive for Richmond in terms of a shopping destination.

You can park, do your shopping at a leisurely rate without worrying you’ll come out to see a dirty ticket on your car.”

“They tell me that shoppers come in and they are in a panic that their ticket is going to expire.

They are saying, I would like to try this on, or will I stop and have a coffee, but no I can’t because my parking meter is about to expire. I’m like that, I’m a busy person and I try to fit in a whole lot of things, but I’m busy looking at that parking meter. It actually doesn’t make for a very relaxing shopping experience.”

Cathy Madigan, of Uniquely Nelson, says in an ideal world there’d be no parking fees all year round.

“It’s always been an issue that Richmond has free parking all year round and we have meters, so we would welcome any initiative that increases free parking.”

Andrew Board Eleven sporting and leisure clubs have formed a working group to develop one super facility at Trafalgar Park.

Several meetings have already been held where clubs have discussed the possibility of approaching Nelson City Council with a planned shared facility under a new eastern grandstand at Trafalgar Park.

The plan would seemingly fit in with the council’s plans for Rutherford Park, which it is planning to develop over the next ten years.

Nelson mayor Aldo Miccio says he’s fully supportive of the move but those behind the idea warn there’s a lot of water to go under the bridge just yet.

Steve Kelso, of Arrow International, is working with the group and says while the plan could be “wonderful” for the city and the clubs, it is only the very start of a long process.

reporter@nelsonweekly.co.nz A local hip hop dance crew will be the only junior group in New Zealand to make it to the world championships if it can raise the funds to get there.

Fuzion, a junior team from Mad Beat dance studio in Nelson, took out the cadet section at the Hip Hop Unite National Dance Championships held in Wellington over the weekend. As well as picking up gold for the event, they were also selected to compete on the world stage, an accomplishment that choreographer Gemma Laing says the team should be extremely proud of.

“Winning first place in your section doesn’t automatically give you the right to compete at the world championships, but Fuzion were selected by the judges to go to it, which is pretty amazing.”

The group is made up of six girls, age 11 to 13 who competed against crews from all over New Zealand for their prize, which will see them face up to 60 other teams when they dance at the world event. Gemma says the team were shocked when they were announced as champions, and it was the best result they’d ever had.

“They were extremely excited. They have

Gemma says the team have been inspired by Mad Beat group Origin who competed at the worlds last year and she hoped they could raise the funds to get Fuzion to the competion.

“This is the second team in the last year from Nelson to be so successful and it’s great. People think that coming from

a small town like Nelson, you can’t be competitive but we like to prove them wrong.”

The world championship event will be held in Serbia from October 15 to 21.

Anyone wanting to get behind the team or find out more is welcome to come along to a concert being held on July 9 and 10 at the Nayland College hall from 6.30pm. Fuzion will perform alongside other Mad Beat dancers to showcase their talents.

Election mail delivered to 40,000 locals Around 40,000 voter packs will be delivered in Nelson by the end of tomorrow in an effort to confirm voter details before this year’s local body elections.

The packs were delivered by NZ Post from Monday and should be all delivered by Wednesday.

They aim to encourage voters to confirm their details ahead of the postal council elections this October.

Registrar of Electors, Marie Elliott, says with the boundary of two councils being in the middle of Richmond and Stoke it’s important that people update their addresses. “We have a lot of people moving from Tasman to Nelson and vice versa so people need to make sure their address is right or they won’t be able to vote for the candidates in their community.”

At the last local body elections in 2010 only 51.38 per cent of registered voters cast their vote.

Although low, figures show it was higher than the 49.84 per cent in Tasman District.

Marie says it’s important people update their voter details and send back letters sent to the wrong address.

“We rely on people doing this right so they can vote.”

Top brass band to defend title Sinead Ogilvie Reporter

While it’s never good to blow your own trumpet, when you’re the best brass band in town, it’s a bit hard not to.

Nelson Vivace Youth Brass, winners of the youth grade at last year’s national contest are gearing up to defend their title at the New Zealand National Brass Band Championships.

The contest is to be held this month in New Plymouth and will see more than 30 young local players compete against other youth bands from all over the country.

Brass Academy tutor Nick Sharpe says the group are in full practice mode preparing for the championships in which they will compete in several categories including youth grade, D grade, a street march and soloist events.

“It’s a really big contest, it is the highlight of the year for them.

They’ve literally been counting down the days.”

It is the third time the band has taken part in the national contest and band member Jess Rogers, 16, says she is “really excited to perform as a group” at such a competitive level again.

Jack Currie, 15, says the the trip is the biggest of the year for the group and he looks forward to the annual event.

“It’s really social and fun. It’s definitely the biggest contest of the year for us.”

Jack puts the band’s popularity down to Nick, who he says brings a lot of enthusiasm and

a good sense of humour to the band.

“Nick is just really fun and it makes us all want to be there and take part.”

The talented group are currently fundraising to get to the national event and are hosting a concert this Sunday evening at Nelson College.

Rabbit Island’s whale cemetery A gray’s beaked whale that died at Tahunanui Beach last week has joined six others at a marine mammal burial ground on Rabbit Island.

While the burial ground is really just a large pit previously used as an area for extracting sand, the task of getting a five tonne whale there is no easy feat.

Dirk de Vries, of the Department of Conservation, says this practice of burying dead marine mammals has been going on for a long time and estimated the Rabbit Island site, which is on land managed

by PF Olsen, is about eight years old. “Last time we had to get a ten tonne digger in and get a decent sized truck just to get it there,” says Dirk. “Local iwi gave it a blessing and then it was taken away.”

When a whale is stranded on a beach and dies in an area with high foot traffic, DOC recommends that it is buried. DOC consults the local iwi first and if the green light is given then genetic samples are taken before it is shifted to the burial ground on Rabbit Island.

“With their approval we take some genetic samples, which is basically a one square centimetre cut at the trailing edge of the tail fin. We preserve that and then send it away to the University of Auckland to a woman who does studies up there.

We also take measurements and as much information we can on the day depending on how fresh the carcass is.”

If a whale dies in an area deemed to have little or no public access then it is left to naturally decompose and decay and if there is a mass stranding, which has occurred in

Golden Bay, then the whales are tied down so they don’t wash up.

Dirk believes consultation with local iwi is a significant part of the process and says all of the whales are buried facing out to sea so they can spiritually “continue on their journey”.

The burial ground is in a restricted area with no public access and Dirk described it as a “pit with grass on it”.

“Unless you knew where it was you’d have no idea where to find it.

But if you wanted to drive over it then it’d probably be quite a tricky situation because there’s carcasses under there and quite big ones too so you’d probably sink into it, which wouldn’t be so nice.”

Largest family competition winners The region’s largest families have been found.

More than 40 entries were sent to Nelson Weekly for the competition which sees the three biggest families offered a free meal at Café Olive in central Nelson.

There were several entries of families with 14 children but they were from either outside our distribution area or most of the siblings were over 18, ruling them invalid for the competition.

We also heard some incredible stories, like the Tahunanui family that had four girls, tried for a boy but ended up with triplets, all girls.

But the overall winner was the Curry family, who have ten children ranging in age from 19 to 2.

The family has won dinner for them all at Café Olive, with the Dunne family winning lunch for finishing second and the Azizullah family winning breakfast for finishing third.

Steve Dunne – whose family featured in the Weekly a fortnight ago – says he’s rapt about getting lunch for his family, which includes eight children.

The Azizullah family, with mother Shafiqa, has eight children in Nelson but another four in Afghanistan. They say they were very grateful and excited about the meal.

“We are very happy, this is very nice of Cafe Olive to do this.”

Michael Curry and his wife Kimberline moved to Nelson three years ago so he could take up a job as an aircraft engineer at Air Nelson.

Michael was stoked to hear his family, who had been nominated by someone at their local church, had won the free meal.

Secondly, me and Kimberline can’t go out either because it’s really hard to get someone to look after the kids.”

The eldest son, Michael junior, is leaving Nelson in three weeks to do an aeronautical certificate in Blenheim, so the family will use the free dinner for his going away party.

“We were planning on doing something like a family outing so this is absolutely perfect.

We’re so blessed. Whoever nominated us, we’d like to thank that person and also thank the people behind this competition. It’s perfect timing for us.”

Café Olive’s Hakan Aslankilinc came up with the idea for the competition, noting how difficult it is for a large family to go out for dinner.

He says he’s been thrilled the number of entries to the competition and can’t wait to meet the winners.

“I was very pleased and surprised to find that there were such large families living here in Nelson. For a small town, there are a lot. It’s not something you would notice until you do something like this. I’m so excited to meet the winners and look after them in the café.”

Nelson-made boat leaves for PNG One of the biggest boats ever built in Nelson, and possibly the most complex multi-purpose vessel to come out of New Zealand, was launched at Port Nelson last week.

The $5 million, 30 metre Morobe Rainforest is a purpose designed and built passenger and cargo ferry that will service the coastline of the Morobe district in Papua New Guinea.

The Nelson build was the result of a marketing push between Nevil and Amber Basalaj from Challenge Marine and Pat Holmes from NZ Boat Sales. Local designer Richard McBride was engaged to bring together a vessel that met the multiple needs for transport and service of the Morobe villagers.

The Morobe Rainforest will carry 120 passengers, 60 tons of freight and six crew. Its maximum speed is 14 knots, powered by twin diesel engines with fixed propellers, protected by two large strong keels.

After the success of last year’s inaugural Independence Day Cruise the Nelson Hot Rod Club is organising it again and it's inviting all American vehicles to take part. The cruise will be held on the Sunday after Independence Day in the United States – July 7 – and will see close to 100 motorbikes, hot rods and classic cars drive from Tahunanui to Riwaka and back.

huge success last year and the club was keen to build on that. “We had 85 vehicles last year which was really good, if we can get that again, plus a few more, that would be good.”

Last year the cruise went to Kaiteriteri but Ian says that put off a lot of motorcyclists as the roads were icy on the hill over there, so they’ve shortened it in an effort to attract more bikes.

A $5 entry fee for each vehicle will be donated to the Nelson Hospice and Ian says the day is a great opportunity

to check out other cars and meet other people with similar interests.

People will begin to meet at the Suburban Club on Tahunanui Dr from 9.30am with the vehicles to leave at 11am. They will then go down Nayland Rd to Whakatu Dr and through Gladstone Rd in Richmond. Sanctuary appoints tourism expert

Tourism expert Craig Wilson is the latest addition to the board of the Brook Sanctuary Trust and he says it will play a major part in attracting people to the city.

Craig is the former general manager of marketing for Tourism Auckland and was contracted to set the Qualmark accommodation standards. He also sits on the national board that implemented the national cycle trail. He was appointed to the trust last month and says it has an exciting future as one of the region’s top

three attractions.

“The reason I’m involved is because I believe the visitor experience in the sanctuary will be something that will excite most of us.

When you look at the sanctuary it’s a big amphitheatre because it’s a natural valley, there could be a million birds in the trees and it could be one of the most amazing dawn choruses in the world.”

He says the sanctuary has the potential to be one of the top three visitor attractions in the region. “To come up with something to

knock the Abel Tasman off as number one in the region would be impossible and it’s not the point. We want to bring more people in and encourage them to stay longer.”

and Craig believes that will be attractive to a lot of visitors, both from within New Zealand and around the world.

General manager of the trust, Hudson Dodd, says the appointment of Craig is a great move for the trust. “We’re quite excited to add Craig’s expertise to the already significant depth and expertise of the trust board. He brings a wealth of experience from the tourism and marketing industry and he adds that skillset to the board.”

Local singer hoping for help to raise bikes for kids Children’s singer Kath Bee is taking on a new challenge, but is doing it with the same colour and flair she’s known for and she wants the community to help her along.

Kath is heading to Vietnam in August as part of a Variety tour with Olympic BMX medallist Sarah Walker. The 15 day tour costs $5000, with $500 of that used to buy bikes for local children. Kath will spend nine of her days in Vietnam cycling for up to six hours a day. As part of the journey Kath has decided to raise an extra $1000 so another four bikes can be donated to children.

To help her do it, she’s hoping Nelsonians will join her for a bike ride – or at least some of it – from Victory to Hope and back again on Sunday July 14. “For a while now I’ve thought, I really want to go somewhere and

do something. Then I came across this and thought ‘five grand for most of your meals, accommodation, flights, that’s not bad for 15 days.’”

The Fun Bike Ride with Kath Bee will start at 12.30pm at the start of the Railway Reserve next to the Victory Community Centre. The next stop will be Songer St in Stoke with the convoy to leave there at 1.45pm. The next stop will be the ASB Aquatic Centre, leaving at 2.30pm and then leaving McDonald’s in Richmond at 3.15pm and arriving on Ranzau Rd in Hope.

Kath says anyone that wants to join her for a section of the ride is more than welcome and encourages people to bring along a few coins or notes to put in her fundraising bucket.

If raining, the ride will be held a week later.

Cycle passport launched for new trails The trust behind the region’s new cycle trails has launched its “passport”, a guide book that introduces tourists and locals to the network of cycle trails in Nelson and Tasman.

The 36 page “passport” has been specifically designed to provide both walkers and cyclists using Tasman’s Great Taste Trail, the Dun Mountain Trail and the myriad of other cycle trails in our region with all the information they need in one easy to use, great value book. The passport contains detailed route maps, information on all the settlements

The group of friends held a head shaving party in order to fundraise for Rachel, who is currently undergoing treatment for cancer. Each member of the group was sponsored by the community for the event, with all proceeds going towards a fertility treatment fund for Rachel. Although the total is yet to be officially tallied, the group are hoping proceeds will make a dent in the $10,000 needed for the treatment.

After handing over a cheque for $10,000, the Nelson Lions Club are preparing for the latest edition of their popular golf day fundraiser.

The club handed over the money to the Nelson Surf Lifesaving Club last week, proceeds from last year's golf tournament.

But now that last year's money has been donated the Lions turn their attention to this year's event, which will be held in November. The tournament, which is run in conjunction with Southpine, has been held for 19 years running and Lions president Colin Borcovsky says it's the local community that benefits.

"Over the years we've donated more than $250,000 to local groups and for any nonprofit organisations that would like to apply for the money raised, now is the time."

The Richmond Roast House was yet another Richmond business that was a victim of the floods, forcing it to shut its doors to repair the Roast House shop. ter destroyed everything it touched, including the walls of the building, but the most enduring problem for the Roast House was the rimu floor which was heavily damaged. “The floor soaked up so much water and it just wouldn’t dry, that was the longest process of getting us back into business,” says Garry. But with new gib board on the walls, another fresh coat of paint after just refreshing the interior at Easter, and some hard work on the floors, the building has been restored to its former glory.

The last couple of months have been a disruptive time and he is looking forward to supplying his regular and new customers with their favourite take home roast again. “In the end revamping the business was a good thing but it has been a process, it’s going to be great to see everyone again,” and, as Garry likes to say “there aren’t any strangers here just friends we haven’t met yet.” The response from customers during the last two months has been so enthusiastic for the Roast House and it’s from that loyal and supportive re-

sponse that Garry and the team will continue to supply a take home roast that tastes just as good, if not better than any home made one, unless it’s your Grandma’s of course. Garry has listened to his customers and has plans to expand on the menu, offering great news for local roast lovers.

Nelson has won the Bayleys Tasman Trophy for the second consecutive year, edging Wanderers 18-13 in Saturday's thrilling final.

Having been gifted two first half tries courtesy of a charge down and an intercept, it was a resolute defensive effort that sealed victory for the defending champions.

Captain Loui Harvey believed the opening tries, scored by James Lash and David Havili, went a long way to securing the title as his side was able to hold onto its lead for most of the match.

"Yeah that was the difference really," he says. "You have to start well, especially against Wanderers, who are a good team.

Our goal was to come out and start well because we knew that first 15 minutes would be key."

An injury to Nelson prop Dylan Turnbull after ten minutes saw all scrums reduced to golden oldies, a massive blow for Wanderers, which has a strong forward pack.

Wanderers, who had not lost a game all year, were industrial right across the park with wingers Ryan Setephano and Kerehama Barrett seeing plenty of ball.

Prices A look to bounce back against classy Jacks Grade two looks set to be a great competition, last Saturday each of the three games resulted in a winning margin of four goals.

Both Jacks Red and Garin Hangar 58 were both on the wrong side of the ledger so each was keen to open their account. Each team broke their oppositions centre pass to score, Garin scored three times while not to be outdone Jacks replied with four unanswered goals with some fine long range shooting by Moira Raumati. Garin finished the quarter 9-8 in front.

Garin stretched their lead to 18-15 at the major break on the back of some impressive play by Makaila Powick who worked hard to link the defence through to the offensive circle.

Jacks lifted their work rate in the third spell – Robyn Leonard was the ever present link through court and along with wing attack Mel Ramsay displayed a nice understanding in supplying ball to their shooters. Moira Raumati was the dominant shooter while Ange Scoble had a more supportive role in the circle, she shouldered a hefty workload outside.

Goal keep Sue Hone was impressive on the rebound, where great body position denied the college team the second opportunity. Goal defence, Jodi Mardon was supportive through court and provided an option at the transverse for the re-set. Her replacement Erica Newport played a similar role.

While Jacks won the third quarter 8-7 the final quarter belonged to Garin. Poppy Restieaux made a huge impact when she moved from the wing into goal shoot in the third quarter. She was strong in the air to take some difficult high ball, while she converted 11 from 13 to be the most accurate shooter on court. Garin outscored Jacks 10-5 to win the game 35-20.

In the Junior 1 match up there was an intense battle between Nelson Prep Gold and St Paul’s Primo. Although Prep had their noses in front for the entire game, the outcome was not certain until the final whistle was blown. While Prep took out the game 15-14 even the Prep support-

The teams play two very different styles of netball, with Prices no doubt on a high from their win over their A team last week. Prices are a confidence team and are hard to stop once they get on a roll. Jacks on the other hand play patient, controlled netball and don’t appear to get flustered or panic. They have scraped through with two very narrow wins in as many weeks so they will be looking to stamp their authority on the game early on.

Stoke NBS have bragging rights over Richmond Robbie’s Bar & Bistro, however they know too well their win was over a depleted Richmond a month ago. Stoke NBS have turned up the heat in their last two games however they did lose two players with ankle injuries on Thursday. A win is important to both teams, it should be a good one to watch at 8.15pm

Nelson rally driver wins maiden race Ben Hunt won his first ever rally when he took out the third round of the National Rally Championship, the Manawatu Daybreaker, on Saturday.

Until this season the Nelson diesel mechanic has only ever competed in class winning cars, but his step up to a turbocharged all wheel drive WRX STI outright contender has produced immediate results.

For much of the Daybreaker event he and co-driver Tony Rawstron battled with former champion Chris West (Christchurch) for second place behind Masterton’s Richard Mason.

But when Richard stopped in the last stage with mechanical problems, Ben took his maiden win by 13 seconds over Chris.

“We wanted to be competitive from

the start of the season,” said an ecstatic Ben. “And Manawatu showed we could be. It’s pretty awesome.”

For the last two years Ben has won the Two Wheel Drive National Championship in a Ford Fiesta and in 2011 he was also the Junior Champion for drivers younger than 25 years old.

At the end of last year he finished a giant killing second overall in the final round of the championship at Gisborne in the Fiesta.

The step up to the ex Emma Gilmour WRX STI has produced immediate results for him, finishing third at the opening round of the series at Otago and then fourth at Whangarei.

Ben is tackling the season with support from Winger Subaru, Total Oils and his family and friends.

Nelson College bundled out of cup Nelson College has been bundled out of the Chatham Cup with a 2-1 loss to Waimakariri United on Saturday.

Waimakariri made their second trip to Nelson in as many weeks after heavy rain caused the cancellation of their game at half time last Sunday. In that game they were 2-0 up at half time but the second time around they found it more difficult to

break down the College defence, going into the half time break with no score.

College looked good when they played the ball on the ground with the bigger Waimakariri players having the advantage when the ball went aerial.

Waimakariri did get their two goals though, the first shortly after half time and appeared to have withstood the College at-

tack. Nelson didn't drop their heads though and continue to press on. Striker Joel Harden looked dangerous with the ball and his curling shot from the edge of the box brought the home side right back in the match at 2-1. Nelson had all the running in the final ten minutes but couldn't break down the solid Waimakariri defence, ending its run in the cup.

Workers on the field have been hard at work making snow for the Base area. A new high volume snowmaking pump has enabled the snowmakers to make over 20,000 cubic metres of snow on the beginners and intermediate slopes as well as further up the field.

Recent storms saw hurricane force winds go through the ski area – causing some damage to base facilities. The usual swarm of Rainbow volunteers have put everything back

If you sign up for a group lesson you will be assessed for current ability and then assigned to an instructor with other skiers/riders of similar ability for your lesson. Private lessons offer the opportunity for either one-on-one coaching, or a group lesson with just your family or friends,

Rainbow's skier and boarder development programmes offer promising young skiers and snowboarders the opportunity to develop their competitive skills over the season, by participating in full day and half day sessions every Sunday.

This year’s season has kicked off to a great start with the support and efforts of the numerous sponsors, who have been involved with getting things up and running for the year, and have helped improve the ski fields and facilities.

Rep teams rout Marlborough Nelson’s senior hockey teams got their representative seasons off to the perfect start, thrashing Marlborough 9-0 in the men’s game and 4-0 in the women’s match.

The results mean Nelson retains the McCarthy Cup and the Ken Beach Cup, which are both up for grabs annually, while the men’s B team also got its hands on some silverware courtesy of a 2-1 win.

With only one turf operating and Capital trials ongoing, Nelson’s build up to the rep games had been minimal but Craig Brett, who is the women’s coach, says it was the perfect way to the start the campaign.

“With only one turf we haven’t really been able to get these teams together so they went out with an

hour’s preparation so it was good to get some great results,” he says.

“The men’s result was quite surprising though considering how high scoring it was.”

Last year the men’s side won a thrilling match 4-3, but were far too good in 2013, with Junior Black Stick Jared Jones and Pat O’Connor-Leys having starring roles in the rout.

“Marlborough is usually a pretty hard side to play so from our point of view we were happy with both of the main results.

In Sunday’s other match, the women’s B team lost 4-0.

Both the men’s and women’s teams will be back in action this weekend playing against West Coast and Buller respectively.
