Huge drop in robbery A huge drop in robbery and extortion offences in Nelson is a key trend in the latest police statistics released yesterday. But about a quarter of all crime recorded in the wider Tasman district – which includes Nelson, Tasman, Marlborough and West Coast – still involves theft or similar offending. Overall, crime in the July 2011 to June

2012 year compared with the June 2010 to July 2011 year has risen 1.5 per cent. Tasman District has in recent years had good crime resolution rates, say police, and this year the rates in all areas have improved. Police say proactive work around catching drug dealers has seen a 605 per cent jump in the number of offences related to deal-

Prolific hospice fundraiser nearly there A decade ago Stoke woman Shirley Miles put her London heritage to the best use she could think of and is now just $8000 short of her goal to raise $100,000 for the Nelson Hospice. As the Pearly Queen, Shirley has collected $92,000 for the Nelson Hospice, attending the Saturday market and other events all over the region. But with failing health Shirley isn’t sure she will be able to continue another year and is hoping for a big community push to help her reach her goal for the hospice. This Saturday, to say thanks and to try to help her reach her goal, a local BNI group will be helping her collect at the market and the hospice is presenting her with a Höglund Glass crystal. To be a Pearly Queen you have to have been born in London with one hundred years of London an-

ing and trafficking illicit drugs. The district also recorded greater than 99 per cent resolution for this offending. Tasman District commander superintendent Richard Chambers says those figures show the success police have had in targeting drug dealers. Tasman also recorded a 54.2 per cent increase in sexual assaults and related offenc-

es in the same period but superintendent Chambers says the increase in the figures for sexual offending were attributed to a small group of serious offenders apprehended throughout the district and put before the court for multiple offences. They include Nelson man William Mortensen

cestry and with the agreement of fellow Londoners. It was the week before Christmas in 2002 when Shirley decided to use her heritage and collect donations for the Nelson Hospice as the Pearly Queen. Her outfit has evolved since then and features images significant to Nelson, including waves, anchors, grapes, fishing nets with fish and a large scallop shell, a pine tree, the Nelson Cathedral and Shirley’s Civic Award badge for community service. Her white ostrich plumes in the hat are traditional. Shirley says she is determined to try to reach her goal but it is increasingly difficult. “I have to keep going as long as I can to help keep it in the public eye. I hope that when I retire the costume will be in the Nelson Museum to continue to remind people of the need to support the hospice.”

Overall Superintendent Chambers says he was confident police in all three areas were working hard to prevent crime and victimisation and this was reflected in the results.

Increasing L-Carnitine intake is the most natural way to manage healthy weight, because L-Carnitine picks up fat and puts it exactly in the part of the cell where it is burned as energy. L-Carnitine also aids in increasing the metabolic rate without compromising muscle tissue. This is crucial, because muscle tissue is where most of the fat burning happens. L-Carnitine is also beneficial in the natural elimination of cravings and increasing the amount of energy you have to exercise, both of which are very important factors to consider for those who want to manage healthy weight. L-Carnitine is also used by athletes to boost endurance.

Simply the best

Local hospitality businesses win national awards Nelson was recognised for its hospitality excellence last week with three businesses winning major awards. Nelson can lay claim to the best bar in the country after the Sprig & Fern Milton St won the category, while the Little Rock Bar and Nightclub won outstanding host responsibility for the second year in a row and Grand Mecure Monaco Resort won best marketing at the Hospitality Assocation of New Zealand annual awards for excellence. Managing director of the resort, Clare Davies, was also the first woman in 110 years to be elected onto the HANZ board and the first board member from Nelson in “a very long time”. Hospitality New Zealand regional manager Jeanette Swift was glowing in her praise of the three businesses and the rest of the industry in Nelson. “I’m incredibly proud, not only of the finalists and the winners here but of all the entries from Nelson. Three winners in one town, I mean it’s completely showing off isn’t it?” Owners of the best bar in the country, Tracy and Ken Banner, say they were still coming to terms with the win on Friday. “I think it’s just started sink-

But we’re now realising just how big and how significant this is and we can’t quite believe it” Tracy says the regulars at the Milton St pub have been basking in the glory. The success for the bar comes hard on the heels of the Sprig & Fern Brewery, where Tracy is head brewer, finishing runner up in the champion brewery section at the Brewers Guild of New Zealand Beer Awards. Littlerock owner and Nelson HANZ president Ron Taylor praised the success. “I think this shows the excellence in hospitality in this region for getting three national awards,

Grand Mecure Monaco Resort is a multi-award winner at the HANZ awards and this year took home the award for best marketing, which has seen thousands of tourists come to Nelson. The resort’s assistant manager Nicole Garthwaiteis says it’s the first time they entered the marketing category and are rapt to have won it. “We didn’t think we’d get anywhere so this is amazing,” she says. “It’s reinforcing that we’re doing something right.”

Skaters go big at champs

To beat the best you have to pull out something big and Isaac Allen nearly did that at the Cheapskates Nelson Skateboard Competition, throwing himself off the bowl with a 360 backside air. Unfortunately for the young Nelson rider, he was unable to land the trick, despite wows from all of his fellow contestants, and snapped his board on the final attempt. Competition organiser Chris Kirby highlighted the runnerup’s courage and ability to push the top competitors at Saturday’s event at Neale Park. Cheapskates chipped in with a new board following the event. “You gotta have big balls to attempt those tricks and most guys aren’t even prepared to go there. Isaac is renowned for trying those sorts of tricks. You need someone like that because they push everyone along.” The winners of the categories were Jimmy Jay Wright and Liam McAlister.

After the ceremony the family stayed on with friends and family for a party, including “mountains” of food, says Rob. “They were entering into the spirit of the occasion and it was great to see all the colours and wonderful smells.” Plans for the next Habitat for Humanity home are well underway with construction due to start in late October. The house will also be built on St Laurence St.

news BRIEF in NElSON mAN DEAD AT SEA: The ship on which Nelson man Mark William Sweeny, 53, died last Sunday arrived in Nelson last Thursday. The ship and its crew were met by staff from the Australian Maritime Safety Authority and Nelson detectives. The Australian ship’s captain had reported the death of the crew member on Sunday when the vessel was about 270 miles south-east of Tasmania. Detective senior sergeant Wayne McCoy of Nelson CIB says police had interviewed all seven crew about the tragedy and the matter has been referred to the Coroner.

New president for Grey Power Andrew Board New Grey Power president Neville Male fended off Alan Turley in a two horse race for the vacant presidency of the 9000-member organisation last week. Neville received 88 votes to Alan’s 51 at a special meeting in Stoke last Thursday where a new executive was called after several resignations recently. Former president Gordon Currie resigned from the position several months ago after years in the top job, to take up a position on the national board. Nelson City Councillor Eric Davy was

elected unopposed to the vice-president position and seven new board members were confirmed, again unopposed. Neville told the 150-strong crowd that he would lead the organisation forward with more consultation and getting better value for money for its members. He said he has been working on a business plan for the organisation for the past year and was looking forward to his new role. “We’re delighted with the result and we have a good bunch of talented people there so it will be my job to harness that talent to the benefit of Nelson Grey Power members. It’s a big job ahead, but

it will be a good one.” He says he is happy to have the election past him. “We took a bit of flak for calling for the meeting and I’m relieved that it’s over and we’ve won.” He says the first meeting will probably be next week or the following week where they will look at a number of issues and put together a plan leading into Christmas. “We want to start the new year in a positive frame of mind so we’ll have a few things to sort out but I’m not sure what will need addressing until our first meeting,” he says.

Car rubbish main polluter of our shore Rubbish thrown from cars around Nelson has made up the majority of trash found on the shoreline during the past two Big Beach Cleanups and organisers don’t expect that to change this year. The Tasman Bay Big Beach Cleanup is five weeks away, on November 10, and organisers are looking for more community groups to claim a stretch of shoreline in Nelson or Tasman and clean it up. The first cleanup netted more than 10 tonnes, with more than six tonnes collected last year by hundreds of volunteers over the 295 kilometres of shore from Cable Bay to Golden Bay. Coordinator for the cleanup, Janice Gravett from the Department of Conservation, says the most affected areas are in the inner haven near Atawhai, the Nelson marina and other coastline near roads. She says plastic bottles and other rubbish make up the lion’s share of

litter. The cleanup – a joint initiative between DoC, Nelson City Council, Tasman District Council and Nelmac – is primarily to protect sea life that may become tangled in plastic or eat something they shouldn’t. A secondary benefit, says Janice, is making the region the country’s cleanest shoreline as no other region does a similar cleanup. She says the call is now going out for community groups to sign up to clean one of 50 sections of beaches. Around half those coastal sections have already been taken by groups that took part in previous years. Groups can find out more about the beach cleanup and register to take part at www.doc.govt.nz. In the event of bad weather the event would be postponed till the following day, Sunday 11 November.

Magic at the Mall Well known magician Elgregoe is in Richmond this week performing a string of free fun, entertaining illusions and magic tricks. The performances will begin at 11am and 1pm every weekday at the Richmond Mall, with his final show being held on Friday. Elgregoe, who’s real name is Greg Britt and is a recipient of the New Zealand Order of Merit, brings an entirely new show to the district, having

been here for many shows in the Richmond Mall previously and held anti-bullying magic shows at local schools. “We love coming to Nelson because the kids are always enthusiastic. There’s nothing in this show that we have performed before so it’s all new,” says Elgregoe. “We spend eight months of the year performing around New Zealand and everywhere we go there is a new crowd and new people, it’s nice.”

Local winners bring awards ‘home’ Sinead Ogilvie A local mother and daughter design duo have returned from the WOW awards in Wellington with a third placing at the prestigious show. Cassandra Thomson and Coral Bowe of Richmond were awarded third place in the CentrePort Illumination Illusion Section for their glow in the dark creation on Friday night. Their garment was the pair’s fifth collaborative entry to the Brancott Estate World of Wearable Art Awards and starred a magician who made his assistant disappear. Watching their garments ‘now you see her, now you don’t’ performance on stage was a highlight for both women and Cassandra says they were shocked to be recognised on the world stage again. “It was very exciting, we were so surprised. We had absolutely no idea we would win an award. Each year the show keeps evolving and it is just amazing to see what the other people come up with.” For Coral the highlight of entering was watching the creation come to life on stage. “Every show is different, it’s just mind blowing. It just looks so different to what it does at home in your living room.” Working their sewing in around Cassandra’s two young children, the pair completed their entry “The Great Illusionist” in three months. “We had to use their afternoon nap times to get the work done, so we had about an hour to an hour and a half each day.” The pair have enjoyed success from their individual entries with Cassandra entering 15 times since 1991 and Coral six times but Cassandra says they “have a great time creating garments as a team.” Using glow in the dark nylon to create their

magical entry, Cassandra mastered the bigger design and sewing tasks and Coral hand stitched the lace and beading to make the details of the garment come together. Another Nelson entry Gillian Saunders placed third for her “Dragged through a hedge” in the American Express Open Section.

Rai Valley turns out for spring fair Sinead Ogilvie

The school holidays kicked off on Sunday with the return of the annual Rai Valley Spring Fete that saw $3000 raised for the country community. The event attracted a crowd of fete-goers to the Carluke show grounds and loads of kids activities, arts, crafts and refreshments made for a busy day of festivities. Country musician Matt McNeilly, Wairau Plains Music Muster and dancer Kelly Webster performed enthusiastically to the crowd during the day and organsier Faye Leov says the entertainment was a huge part of the fete's success, “The combination of the music and the surroundings, just creates this ambience.” A committee of seven including Faye helped the fete come together and Faye says they were

pleased with how the day was received after "weeks and weeks" of organisation. “It’s fantastic, just lovely. The enthusiasm of the stallholders is great and everyone is having fun,” she says. Customers lined up for food spanning from wood fired pizza, icecream, to white bait and ‘Dutch Touch’ stallholders, David Rijnink and Kim Westerink were impressed with the event. “It’s been a really nice day, it’s very well organised, positive, we have just loved it.” She says kids were kept busy quad bike riding, water walking and bouncing down the Titanic slide, and many customers took advantage of the different clothing, books and plants available. Faye says future Rai Valley Spring Fetes will also be held on the first weekend of the school holidays, and will become an annual event.

Winners of the annual Cawthron Science and Technology Fair normally boast plenty of brains but this year’s major winners also relied on their mussels. Their green lipped mussels. The fair ran over several days at the Ernest Rutherford Retirement Village two weeks ago with the awards held last Wednesday at Garin College, with more than $6000 in prizes up for grabs. Holly Pittar, of Nelson College for Girls, received the John Cross Supreme Science Award for her investigation on the effect of water temperature on the feeding rate of green lipped mussels. She also received the Nelson Federation for Graduate Women Award and a Gold Science Award. Also from Nelson College for Girls, Allie Tonks received the Des Duthie Supreme Technology Award for her study of green lipped mussel and their movement towards or away from different sound frequencies. Both projects have been submitted to the annual national science event, Realise The Dream which is

organised by The Royal Society of New Zealand and held in Wellington in December. Judene Edgar, secretary of the Cawthron Institute Trust Board and a judge of the fair says it’s amazing how each year, students can take an entirely new angle on a science theme or concept. “Their imaginations are inspiring.” Cawthron community educator Jo Thompson says it was a difficult task to judge. “The standard was so high and we had several very high achievers." A team of 50 judges from a range of teaching and science backgrounds reviewed the projects via a thorough process of interviews at the Ernest Rutherford Retirement Village last Wednesday. Other schools from throughout the region were represented in the top ranking projects including, Waimea College, Nayland College, Motueka High School and Nelson College. Nelson College for Girls performed exceptionally well with 14 of the award winning students from the girls college.

Kindergarten benefits from garden trail

A spring garden trail through some of Waimea’s most stunning private gardens has raised around $1000 for the Auckland Point Kindergarten. Audrey Kitto of the Nelson Haven Lioness Club, the organisation that runs the event, says numbers were down on previous years however feedback was positive, especially in regards to the Devonshire teas and scones from Templemore. In total, nine gardens are visited. Seven of the gardens are based

around the Hill St area of Richmond while two others were based in Hope. Audrey says the event’s success comes from the event-goers’ strong interests in nice gardens. “They all look for ideas for gardens they might have at home. We had a really good response from the Devonshire teas and that always helps, giving us some more profit. Everyone we spoke to was happy with the day.” Each year the event raises money for a different charity.

The Nelson Male Choir has moved into top gear preparing for its 80th anniversary this month. under the steady hand of Andrea Hamilton the choir is in good heart. Eleven new members have joined in the past three years, and they help balance the age structure as older members wind down. The choir was established in October 1932 and quickly attracted 33 singers for its first concert six months later. They had planned to be an all-male group but when their accompanist had to withdraw they engaged a young Hannah Vining on a temporary basis. That became a long-term affair. She finally left the role 25 years later in 1957. The longest-serving leader was the redoubtable Len Barnes who led the choir as a firm but friendly conductor for 22 years from 1957 to 1979 when he retired on his 90th birthday. Pete Rainey gave the choir ten years of his direction and in 2000 took on the National Male Choir for its first trip to South Wales where it gave eight concerts. Twenty-two Nelson Choir members took part in that tour. Through its 80 years the Nelson Male Voice Choir has taken part in many special functions. It regularly sings at RSA Anzac Day services and has presented several Anzac concerts. The annual Blessing of the Fleet in July is another regular commitment. The concerts are at the School of Music on Saturday, October 13 at 7.30pm and Sunday, 14 at 2pm. Tickets: Adults $20, are available from the School of Music, Summit Real Estate, Stoke, and the Richmond Mall Information Centre or at the door.

Local apprentice is NZ’s best

170 years of Nelson libraries The founders of Nelson’s first library were told to “take 700 books and grow a library”, 170 years on it’s the oldest in the country. Nelson Public Libraries celebrated its 170th birthday last Thursday with the unveiling of a plaque titled “Take 700 books and grow a library”. The commemorative panel depicts the libraries’ history from its formation in 1841 through to today and was unveiled to a crowd of library friends and supporters by Ian Littleworth, manager of Nelson public libraries. A long history has accompanied the Nelson public libraries from its first formation as the ‘Nelson literary scientific institute’ on board the immigrant boat Whitby during its journey to Nelson in 1841.

The first 700 books were donated by passengers on board, and Nelson’s first library building opened on 27 September 1842 on Trafalgar St. Nelson Public Libraries also happily claims the title of longest continually operating library in New Zealand, spanning from 1841 and expanding to the flourishing libraries you see today. Ian says the plaque and celebrations were all about looking back to where the libraries started. “It’s such a great achievement, and we spend so much time looking ahead, we need to spend a bit of time looking back at our roots and our heritage, and celebrate those.” Nelson city councillor Peter Rainey attended the ceremony, describing the libraries as “a fantastic multifaceted community hub”.

Nelson sparkie Alex Tyson has been crowned as the best apprentice electrician in the country. Alex, who works for Glenn Roberts Electrical, made it through to the national finals in the commercial/domestic category of the ECANZ Apprentice of the Year Award after the preliminary finals in Wellington. There he beat out the six other competitors by completing challenges including first aid, pricing jobs and installing a home automation system. He says he was “shocked but stoked” with the win after failing to place in the same competition last year. “I entered it last year and made the finals but didn’t place so I thought since I was still an apprentice I’d give it another go.” It wasn’t all roses for Alex though, he says he was almost tripped up on the last task of the day. “There was this stupid door bell. It

was the last thing I had to do and it just would not work for me. It was just a little white box, it was the most frustrating bit. It was just two wires, I got it going, that was fine. Then they threw in an alteration in the last hour and here’s me, everything else was done, all the complicated stuff was done, it was just two wires that were tripping me up.” Alex won cash, vouchers and tools as part of his prize package, as well as a 21 day course with Outward Bound from which he has just returned. He started with Glenn Roberts four years ago this month and says he should finish his apprenticeship early next year. His boss Josh Roberts says he is proud of Alex and pleased to know that the business is on the right track with training staff. “It’s a great achievement and we’re all very happy for him.”

Recognition for Rocks Rd ‘essential’ The past, present and future protection of Nelson’s Rocks Rd and seawall is the subject of this year’s Nelson Historical Society’s James Jenkins Memorial Lecture. The guest lecturer, retired architect and heritage consultant Grahame Anderson, has a particular interest in early waterfront structures, including seawalls and his lecture explores the 117-year long process by which the Rocks Rd seawall arrived at its present appearance and condition. Grahame will discuss the design essence and construction of Sam Jickell’s original curved and twisting seawall, and its mid-20th century additions and 21st century adaptations. Also examined will be the risk of the seawall being buried in landfill in response to demands for a wider, straighter roadway, alongside a growing awareness of its national, cultural and heritage significance and the need to protect it. Grahame says it was within only a few years of the construction of the Rocks Rd seawall and roadway in 1895 that its structural adequacy began to be tested. “The advent of motor-cars and trucks and their increasing speeds and loads began the process which has, during

the intervening century, severely tested the structural adequacy of a design built when roadway loading consisted of horse-drawn vehicles.” Grahame argues that the original design, together with additions designed in the 1950s, 1960s, and 2000s, warrant collective cultural heritage recognition, alongside the 682 stanchions and chains already protected by both Nelson City Council and New Zealand Historic Places Trust listing as heritage structures. “The resultant combination of sinuous ribbed concrete solidity capped with a sturdy metallic filigree of contrasting light and shade, all draped along the face of the steep rocky Nelson shoreline. achieves an aesthetic quality unequalled amongst New Zealand seawalls,” he says. “The risk of the Rocks Rd seawall being buried in landfill in response to demands for a wider straighter roadway remains however. Convincing assessment and widespread recognition of its overriding national cultural and heritage significance is essential.” The lecture will be held upstairs at the Nelson Yacht Club on Monday, October 8. Entry $2.

Red Cross programmes co-ordinator Megan Riddell prepares for the organisation’s annual red rose appeal day which will be held this Friday. Photo: Phillip Rollo.

Red Cross prepares for appeal The Red Cross rose appeal will be hitting the streets of Nelson this Friday, October 5. Approximately 55 volunteers will man nine stalls around the Nelson, Stoke and Richmond shopping areas between 9am and 3pm selling around 2000 red roses. The Red Cross uses the red roses to thank the public for its support over the past year and in turn hopes to get donations that it can use for further funding for programmes within the Nelson-Tasman community. Each Red Cross organisation around New Zealand has the ability to choose when it holds its appeal week. Key programmes that are run by

the Red Cross include delivering meals-onwheels in the wider community every week day, providing community transport to medical and health related appointments, providing free first aid courses, visiting services in rest-homes, the emergency response team and running three shops in Nelson, Tahunanui and Richmond. The general New Zealand public donated $125 million for the Christchurch Earthquake Appeal, including generous support from the Nelson and Tasman community. Last year rose day raised over $3000 and the organisation was hoping to exceed that figure this year.

Inner Wheel after new members CrimeWatch

Community minded women are invited to join ‘Inner Wheel’ an international service club that aims to make a difference on both a global and local level. Inner Wheel is a woman only club that is closely connected with Rotary and is one of the world’s biggest organisations for women. Its members actively fundraise, donate and embark on voluntary work to help

out people or projects in need. Inner Wheel operates internationally but has many different clubs within New Zealand, and current Nelson clubs are Stoke-Tahunanui, Nelson and Motueka. For the first time all women from any community are invited to join Inner Wheel, after a rule requiring new members to be connected to the Rotary organisation has been abandoned.

ORCHID SHOW: Dirk de Groot with his award winning orchid at the Nelson Orchid Society Spring show on Saturday. His 8 year old Phalaenopsis orchid was judged ‘grand champion’ at the show held at Stoke school Hall. The annual show is open for the public and is an opportunity for local members to show off their best orchids and fundraise for the society. Around 2000 orchids were entered into the show, and has been held in Nelson since the 1980s. Around 500 people visited the show. Photo: Sinead Ogilvie.

Nelson's Inner Wheel clubs help out with local and nationwide events such as daffodil day, and have contributed to operation cover up, a project which saw them send knitted clothing to orphanages in Europe. Any woman who is keen to lend a hand, make a difference and gain friendships is welcome at a meeting on October 16 at Nick Smith's rooms from 7.30pm, or call Sue on 542 3500.

Trendy places to see Tim and Liz recommend the following hotspots if you are booking a holiday soon. Vietnam Visiting Vietnam is one of the most enriching holiday locations, and is a popular place if you want to immerse yourself within the varied cultures while relaxing at the same time. With divine cuisine, picturesque scenery combined with a significant history, this is an all in one holiday destination. Rarotonga You can’t go past our Pacific neighbours for a relaxing get away, and the largest island in the South Pacific is a must visit location. A place to feel relaxed and welcomed, lie on the beach and take in the stunning setting, this is a place to get away from the daily grind of everyday life.

Burma A long boycott has seen this destination go untouched by the crowds that visit Asia, and now the people of Burma are waiting with open arms to invite holiday makers to share in their cultural history, and breathtaking sights. Learn about the culture, appreciate their struggle for rights and explore their beautiful country.

Darwin At the tropical end of Australia Darwin is in hot demand as a trendy holiday. The busy markets, restaurants and pubs combine a neat mixture of a laid back yet bustling population.

“My favourite holiday destination is the Maldives, because of its beauty. It’s so different from New Zealand. The Maldives is the only place I have ever been where the destination is picture postcard, holiday brochure beautiful from the moment you arrive – no driving for hours down the coast to find that magical spot, it’s all magic from the moment you arrive. Picture tropical islands, crystal clear waters teeming with fish, white beaches, clear blue sky with just the occasional cloud and warm gentle breeze.”

Hen Houses & Poultry Supplies Spring is upon us and Appletons Hen Houses and Poultry Supplies is bursting with new life. Heritage chicks are hatching, week old balls of fluff are chirping and a mother mallard duck has even moved to Appletons to raise her ducklings in the sunshine. If you have been thinking about keeping chickens, spring is the perfect time to get started. Appletons carry everything you need to set up, from day old chicks, to feed, feeders and drinkers, shavings, hatching eggs and a wide range of kitset hen houses and chicken coops that can be customised to your needs. Fionna and Gordon Appleton run their business from the heart, and what started as a few guinea fowl when they built their home in 2004 snowballed into the full blown poultry supplies business that it is today. Fionna and Gordon have a love for birds, and Appletons on Mt Heslington Rd has thrived as people have shared their enthusiasm and seek their help and advice for keeping chickens. Passionate preservers of the heritage breeds, Fionna and Gordon dedicate their lives to rare heritage breed poultry and have a busy time hatching many different varieties. Heritage breeds are good layers and are popular, striking looking backyard chickens to keep, with many people choosing to keep the traditional breeds. They also stock the brown shaver for those that like to keep the commercial hybrid as a backyard layer. Developed, designed and

Beginners can look to Fionna and Gordon who will help you decide what chickens would best suit your lifestyle and backyard taking the stress off getting started. “If you are new to keeping poultry and would like some specialist advice on how to set up and keep your chooks at your place we are very happy to provide this service for our local customers,” says Fionna. Deciding on your set up will depend on what you want to get out of your chooks, if you want lovely laying girls, they’ll need a safe, secure place to sleep

and lay. Chooks also enjoy foraging and having access to free range, which is perfect for the backyard or paddock but can also be kept happily confined to a run. Having a safe and enjoyable place for your chickens to live and lay is important, and Gordon custom designs and builds kitset hen houses and chicken coops. When Gordon and Fionna started out they built their own hen houses, and friends liked what they saw so much that they requested their own. With their hen houses a huge success, Gordon now builds kitset houses and coops to order, shipping the houses to anywhere in New Zealand. Fionna says customers are amazed at

Construction surge in Richmond A surge of construction projects has hit the Richmond CBD with most local construction company’s finding themselves involved in significant projects. Those projects include the Tasman District Council office upgrade, upgrades to the Richmond Mall interior and entrance, a new Fonterra building, a two-storey Network Tasman building on Oxford St and the demolition of the former Placemakers building on Queen St. They also follow on from the new Maori immersion school that was built by Arrow International and the TNL base in Richmond West. Justin Candish of Scott Construction, the company working on the Network Tasman building, says he doesn’t have an answer to why Richmond specifically was a popular place to build right now but that it was a good time to develop in general. “There is a bit going on but I don’t really know why. I don’t know whether it is parking related or not. I think money is cheap and it’s a good time to develop.”

Bowls club's 70th birthday

The Ngawhatu Bowling Club will celebrate its 70th birthday this weekend with a luncheon, cake cutting and tournament. Above is the green on its opening day in 1942 and left is current president Paul Marshall and club member Maurice Cattermole. Photo: Andrew Board. One of Nelson’s most picturesque bowling greens is preparing to celebrate its 70th birthday this weekend and its club’s members hope it will still be around to reach its 75th. Starting as a club for patients and staff of the Ngawhatu Psychiatric Hospital in 1938, the Ngawhatu Hospital Bowling Club initially played at an indoor stadium in Hardy St until it got a green of its own in 1942. The green was maintained by patients with players taking part in open days at other Nelson clubs as well. In 1957 there was an overhaul of the club, when it was renamed the Ngawhatu Bowling Club and accepted members from outside the hospital. But the club still had a good number of its members from the hospital and in 1996 it acknowledged its most successful member Alan Bridgeman, a patient, who won 25 club titles. Without a doubt the club’s most influential member was Dick Sowman who was involved in the club from 1942 until 1992

and was president for 28 years. Current vice-president Errol Beattie says the club is looking forward to reminiscing on its history. “It will be a good weekend and I know a number of the members are really looking forward to celebrating the milestone and of course getting on the green for a roll up.” While the history will be celebrated, it’s the club’s future that has some members concerned. With the land now in private ownership and development happening the owners are content for the club to continue but Errol says it’s unsure how long for. “We have a current agreement but we are onto the third owner since the land was initially sold so we just have to play it by ear.” The anniversary celebrations started this Saturday for a luncheon at the Suburban Club and then a cutting of the cake at the club at 3pm. On Sunday the club is hosting a drawn triples tournament with 42 bowlers already registered.

Titans take SI league title Phillip Rollo

Nearly 1000 kilometres separates Nelson and Invercargill on the map but only two points separated their rugby league teams on Saturday. Tasman Titans head coach Phil Bergman credited the team’s spirited culture as it came back from a six point deficit at half time to secure a 26-24 win over the Southland Rams in the South Island Interdistrict Championship final. “We went off our game plan a little and we weren’t doing things the way we should have been. That was a hard game and it shows in the scoreline. It was as close as you can get,” says Phil. The Titans were the first team to get on the scoreboard when Hayden Smith landed an early penalty, but that was cancelled out when Tom Watts of the Southland Rams ran in for the first four pointer of the game. Shaun Taulangi-Todd and Stacey Mikara also dotted down for the southerners as the Titans struggled to string sets together. James Vailanu hit back for the Titans before standout centre Callum Smith ensured the side would only be trailing by a converted

try heading into the half-time break. Tasman looked more focussed in the second half and it only took five minutes for Hayden to score under the posts, despite suggestions he may have knocked the ball on when crossing the paint. The see-saw affair continued throughout much of the second spell with Matt Birch and Callum trading tries for either team. But when a Southland player was sent to the sidelines for ten minutes, momentum swung in Tasman’s favour. Emotions blew up on the sideline when a linesman ruled a Southland player to have stepped out in his attempt to push the Rams back into the lead. Man of the match Callum Smith makes a break for The Southland coach was the Titans on Saturday. Photo: Phillip Rollo. given his marching orders and was forced to sit in the grand-stand for the decision. verbally abusing the linesman following Things only got worse for Southland when

Freedom Walker put the Titans in front just minutes later. With the scoreboard telling the crowd time was up, it looked unlikely that Southland could come back from a six point margin. However, the Rams managed to find a hole down the left hand side and give the kicker a chance to equalise. His conversion attempt went wide and the Titans were crowned victors. Phil says the win highlights Tasman’s growth in rugby league circles. “We are the top of the South Island, we have technically gone unbeaten because the Canterbury game was wiped and from here we want to be the dominant force in rugby league.” The rugby league season is officially over for the Tasman Titans but Phil is already looking towards the future and had his fingers crossed that a national provincial championship could be included in the New Zealand Rugby League calendar in years to come. The result caps off a great year for the sport in Nelson and Tasman with the Richmond Rabbits winning the club competition earlier this year.

Sports trust funds 16 local applicants The newly formed Sports Nelson Tasman Trust has selected the first of its local sportspeople to receive funding. The Trust is offering a minimum of $15,000 each six months to be distributed to successful sports applicants. Yesterday the trust announced that 16 local applicants were successful. Given the go ahead from the Charities Commission the beginning of August of this year, the trust had only one month to get the word out to the people of the Nelson/Tasman district that we were up and running, with an article running in Nelson Weekly in late August. Applications were due 1 Sept. The Trust received 36 applications from a variety of people of all ages seeking funding for a variety of sports. In the final decision, 16 applicants were chosen. At the top of the list is a young solo mum, struggling to raise four wee girls on a limited income. All she wants for her girls is the opportunity for them to

learn to swim and to have goggles. Two Burmese boys are being funded so they can attend their school’s football tournament in Auckland. A 14 year old boy, who had survived a life-threatening illness and now wants to compete in downhill mountain biking, is receiving $2000 to help him find a bike, and the Nelson Intermediate School will receive five mountain bikes to help establish a club for those kids who don’t normally participate in more traditional sports. The trust is also assisting a talented young rower with his club subs, and gym fees for another young man who has struggled with mental wellness. There are two aspiring hockey players, a talented footballer, a basketball player, two cyclists, and two triathletes who will also benefit from funding. The trust is also seeking donations, with 100 per cent of what is donated distributed to deserving sports people from the Nelson and Tasman regions.

Locals battle at nationals Nelson Badminton hosted the inaugural under-13 National Championships on behalf of Badminton New Zealand, at the Nelson stadium at the weekend. Being the first, there was no way of knowing how many entries would be received, however organisers were pleased with the final total of 33 entrants. Twenty-one of those came from the North Island while many of the South Island entries came from as far south as Invercargill and Dunedin. There were five competitors from Nelson. As expected, the championship events were dominated by the North Islanders, with all five winning players and combinations coming from the Auckland region. The Nelson players all tried hard and even surprised themselves with some of the results they achieved against much more experienced opposition. Overall, there were 109 matches played, and they ran very much to time, which was a credit to the organisation skills of Nelson secretary Cassie Marwick. Of the Nelson players, the best performer was Matthew Earle who made the final of the boys’ doubles plate with his Auckland-based partner, as well as having a win in the singles plate and two close losses in the mixed doubles and plate events. Kate Standish won her first round plate singles match, but lost both her mixed doubles, where she was playing with fellow Nelsonian Shiloh Edmonds. Nelson’s Kate Standish in action during the National Un- Harry Tilsley achieved a win in the der-13 Badminton Championship held in Richmond over boys’ doubles plate where he played the weekend. Golf club nears 75th jubilee One of the most stunning golf courses in New Zealand will reach another historic milestone when it turns 75 years old in November. The Tasman Golf Club on the Kina Cliffs is widely regarded as the most picturesque nine hole golf course in the country. If you are walking along the beach, don’t be surprised to see a scattering of golf balls in the sand as one of the link’s traditions is to hit a ball from hole three into the ocean. The course was first purchased in July 1937 by Harold Dodson for just 170 pound. He bought the land off the Baigent family and the club eventually paid him back. It is believed that there were just 15 members when the club first started. There are now 181 members and they come from right across the Nelson-Tasman district. The capital value of the course is well into the millions and its main source of income is from holiday golfers over the summer period. Its most well-known player is former HSBC national nine hole golf winner Jill Gillian and its top event is the Kina Open which is held every November. Former prime minister Bill Rowling was a member of the club. Former club president Alan Tait says it is a “good old country golf club” that is heavily involved with the local horticulture scene. “A lot of young golfers that have gone on to bigger things, it’s like a breeding ground. It’s a nice friendly club and it’s not too expensive,” he says. Shirley Heine, who is the oldest ladies member, says “eve-

Mike Howell, Shirley Heine and Alan Tait at the Tasman Golf Club in Kina. The club is about to celebrate its 75th birthday. Photo: Phillip Rollo. ryone is on the same terms”. “Some of the old golfers that have left for various reasons will hopefully come back and we can catch up and tell some good stories.” For its 75th jubilee, the Tasman Golf Club is encouraging all past and present members, along with potential new

ones, to experience what is easily Tasman’s most scenic course. The official jubilee will run from Friday November 30 to December 2. Cost is $15 for golf on the three days and $45 per head for dinner. For further information please contact the club on 03 526 6919.

Bball champs tip off

Nelson College’s Finn Delaney drives to the hoop during Monday’s National Secondary School Basketball Championship opener against Lynfield College at Saxton Stadium. Photo: Phillip Rollo.

Nelson College got its National Secondary School Basketball Championship campaign off to the best possible start, beating group favourites Lynfield College 73-54 on Monday. Nelson College is drawn in pool three alongside Lynfield, Nayland College, Tauranga Boys College, St Kentigern College and Cashmere High School. Nayland College was scheduled to play St Kentigern College in its first match of the tournament, which is being played at Saxton Stadium during the course of the week. The Nelson derby will be the final game of pool three and is scheduled for 7:30 on Wednesday night. Nayland is the second best team in the South Island having been defeated by Otago Boys High School in the Zone 4 Premiership Tournament final at the beginning of September. At the same tournament Nayland beat Nelson 74-47 in the quarter final. Nelson finished sixth at that tournament but will be buoyed by its impressive showing against Lynfield – a school that is ranked third in Auckland and was the top seed in pool three.

Fishing with

Nelson Dawnbreakers Fishing Club Finally we have had two weekends in a row of nice consistent warm fishing weather and judging by the boats at the Nelson and Okiwi bay boat ramps plenty of people are making the most of it. Seventy plus boats were counted by Niwa in a four hour period at the Okiwi Bay boat ramp last Saturday. The weather looks pretty good long range for the coming week, with a few showers early in the week and maybe some next Saturday but hopefully that will change for the good. The snapper should have arrived in Tasman Bay and from now on we should get reports of good numbers being caught in front of Rabbit Island and along the boulder bank. We have heard of a few big snapper being caught in nets and 1 or 2 on the rods in Tasman Bay. Some good size kahawai have been landed, some of which have been full of whitebait. Delaware Bay is still fishing well with some 9kg plus fish being landed in recent weeks, with plenty of gurnard around also.

There are still heaps of scallops at Okiwi bay with only a couple of tows required to secure most people’s limit. Fishing in the mussel rafts at Squally Cove has been producing some nice brim, gurnard and kahawai also. Kenepuru has been inconsistent with only a few good snapper being caught but should start to come right in the next few weeks. Tip for this month - Fishing the Kenepuru is best done on the incoming tide, either early morning or evening. Try to fish where there is a good current flow, using lots of salmon burley and be patient. It can take up to several hours from low tide for the fish to come into your burley trail and get on the bite. Stray lining works best with 2 beak hooks about 7/0, with one acting as a keeper hook and followed by a small 1/2oz ball sinker. Pilchards are usually the best bait. The bigger fish are usually back in the burley trail so a long cast is a good bet. The reel is put into free spool with only enough drag to stop the tide pulling out nylon. Sit back, wait for the strike.

Leaning wins 10 mile run

Simon Leaning has taken out the Nelson to Richmond 10 miler on Sunday morning, seeing off Nick Ross by 31 seconds. The pair were the only runners to go under the hour mark during the course which took competitors right across the district, through Stoke and Monaco. Simon’s official time was 59 minutes 25 seconds. Scott Howley was third followed by Stu Cottam and Daryl Cotton.

Colette Read took out the women’s event in 70 minutes, followed by Trish Leonard and Fran Kerse. Ross Mitchell completed the 10 mile walk in one hour 40 minutes and 27 seconds while Lyn Smith took out the women’s division in one hour 46 minutes and 36 seconds. Team DB was first place in the team run with a time of 69 minutes 52 seconds and Fiona Young with Jeff Leckie were the victors in the team walk.

Entering the next power range, Honda’s brand new BF250 combines a powerful 3.6L V6 EFI engine with the world’s first direct air induction system to deliver outstanding performance.
