“It is unique to Nelson and the model of Mike Ward has been really well done.”

“I think that it is nice that there is a place like that to sit.”

“I think it is a great idea, it is fantastic to have a place you can spontaneously sit down and enjoy.”

“I think it is very effective and the council should be commended for their ingenuity.”

City retailers join forces in same building FROM PAGE 1 since the mid-1980s but a combination of increased competition and a change in customers buying habits means they were keen to look at fresh options. Ricky says the move makes sense as the businesses complement each other. “I think you’re seeing more of this kind of thing, businesses wanting to be innovative and keep overheads down.” He says the move will be nostalgic as he has personally worked in the store for more than 20 years. But it’s not the first time businesses have decided to share the same roof. Hogey’s moved into the same store as Stirling Sports almost

two years ago and other models exist in Nelson too. The Bridge St Collective houses around 15 businesses in the one building and its founder Galen King says the benefits of a “co-working” environment are huge. “We find we are so much more motivated and stimulated when working amongst and around other motivated and stimulated people. This doesn’t necessarily mean we interact with them regularly or work together. Just having the creativity around us can help make a day more interesting than working from home in isolation,” he says. “Of course, in addition to the community aspect of a coworking studio, there are the cost savings and the added services

By sharing we’d all struggle to justify or a space we also reduce costs of would be more expensive, such power, broadband etc.” as a full-colour printer, finishing Phil says the move is an exciting equipment, kitchen facilities and time for their business. “We’re

pretty enthused. We can see all the potential and I think we will be well suited to each other,” he says. “The technology in hi fi now, a lot of people wouldn’t know that we’ve got it here. They probably think to see all the latest technology you have to go to a computer shop. So it makes sense that we go in with a technology company. A lot of our stuff is operated with products like iPads.” Galen says he wasn’t surprised to hear of the Living Sound move and expects more businesses to do the same over time. “Definitely. All over the world, co-working is taking off and it’s only a matter of time before it does so in Nelson too.”

Table fee dropped for takeaway shop Owners of a Tahunanui fish and chip shop will go ahead with plans to upgrade their outdoor seating after they say Nelson City Council backed down on its proposed consent fees, an amount that was more than what the business pays in annual rates. Roy Gray and Bruce Maxfield were visited by a NCC staff member yesterday and told the council would not be pursuing the consent costs of $2240 plus GST it originally sought for them to put two big picnic tables outside their shop. It has

handed the matter back to the owners of the road, New Zealand Transport Agency. Bruce says they could still be forced to pay a fee to NZTA but will wait to hear from them before getting too concerned about what it might possibly be. “We’re really happy, they’ve backed down completely,” says Bruce. is at the end of a row of shops and the space outside its door is only used by their customers. Several months ago they contacted the council about their plans to upgrade the seating and were given two options, one which came with consent costs of $960 plus GST and the other for $2240. Frustrated, Roy and Bruce contacted the Nelson Weekly and their story was reported earlier this month. They say the article had the desired effect. “The lady from the council said ‘you’ve certainly opened a can of worms’ and I told her that was the idea. Why should we be stung with a bill $200 more than what the rates of the building are just to put a couple of tables out?” says Roy. Bruce says they will now go ahead with their plans for bigger tables that will fit up to 12 people. “We have some large families, you’ve got mum and dad and half a dozen kids crossing the road to find somewhere to sit, it’s not nice. We’ve got little tables out here but we wanted a bigger one to fit a family and now we can go ahead and do it.”

Debate over radio mast DUmp fEES DUmpED: Dump fees at Nelson City Council transfer station are to be waived for those dumping material damaged in last Sunday night’s flash flood. Nelson mayor Aldo Miccio says the offer applies to Nelson city residents. The council says there will be people who have already made the trip to the transfer station and a form can be filled in to claim back that fee. SASh fUnDrAiSEr: Nelson mayor Aldo Miccio took to the stage for the first time as auctioneer, in support of local charity SASH (Sexual Abuse Healing Support) at a fundraising event last night. The Love Your Life event raised awareness and funds for SASH, a charitable organisation providing intensive support and counselling services to women and children affected by sexual abuse. Event organiser Caron Proctor from Life Coach Nelson, says although the underlying message is serious, the event was focussed on having fun. nEW ciTizEnS: Twenty nine new Nelsonians swore allegiance to New Zealand at a special ceremony at Whakatū Marae. Their nationalities were American, Bosnian, British, British Irish, Chinese, Dutch, French, Italian, Myanmari, Papua New Guinean, Thai and Tongan.

The future of the radio mast at Saxton Field now depends on whether the Nelson City Council can convince Radio New Zealand that an alternative mast is sufficient for its needs and it can therefore be moved. Last week Radio NZ transmission manager Gary Fowles told Nelson Weekly that all investigations into where the mast could go have been exhausted. He says the possibility of using the Radio Rhema mast was looked at and discounted years ago because it didn’t have the reach of their current site. NCC dropped funding to help move the mast in its last long term plan but Nelson

He says the council is working with its own experts and Radio Rhema to convince Radio NZ that’s its mast is powerful enough to reach the remote rural areas that it needs. “Radio NZ are still sceptical that the mast can deliver the same output but we are working now at showing Radio NZ that in terms of frequency and band-

The land surrounding the aerial is leased back to the council for the use of sports fields. Aldo says if Radio NZ agrees to the move it can be done “virtually overnight” and at very little cost. “In my view it’s a health risk for the children, adults and parents that play sport out there so it’s really important we move it as quickly as possible.”

Drifters leave their mark Diane Williams thought she had discovered a quiet haven when she moved to Best Island – not an isolated paradise for boy racers. The Best Island woman says she was mortified to see boy racers drifting across the road, cutting up the reserve and leaving rubber scattered across the pavement last weekend. But her biggest issue is the fact no one has followed up on complaints left with an anonymous crime hotline. “I told them they’re out there. I could see them and they’re drifting all over the road. Collingwood St bridge gets arty makeover

A group of Nelson College for Girls students have completed a mural on the Collingwood St Bridge after their design was chosen to colour the previously unused space. The Nelson Youth Council

invited local secondary school students to submit their artwork to decorate the bridge and Sophie Smith and Francesca Hills, both 14, whose design was based around the past, present and future of Nelson was chosen

to complete the project. The brief for the project was to design a mural which encapsulates the feel of Nelson, the history behind the Maitai river and the way that Nelson relates to it.

Vicky Shelling, Petra Nugent and Janine Pomeroy are gearing up to take part in the Rollos Challenge adventure race this Saturday to fundraise for a local rehabilitation programme for women who have undergone cancer-related surgery. Photo: Sinead Ogilvie.

Ladies raise cash for challenge A group of local women are braving the Nelson Rollos adventure race this Saturday in a bid to support women who have battled cancer. The group hopes to raise awareness and fundraise for the Pink Pilates Trust, a local programme that offers rehabilitation for women who have undergone cancer-related surgery and say they want to let women know that there is life during and after undergoing cancer treatment. For Petra Nugent and Janine Pomeroy breast cancer is personal and they say their fundraising goal comes down to their own firsthand experiences. While Petra has just begun the arduous journey of surgery and awaits chemotherapy and radiation treatment she will compete alongside Janine, who is a breast cancer survivor, and Vicky Shelling in the 8 hour race that will see

them mountain bike, hike and run. Petra says she was determined to stay active when she was diagnosed with breast cancer and wants other women to realise that they can too. “What really sums it up for me, why I am doing it is that the programme helps women diagnosed with cancer regain their physical strength, improve their body confidence and incorporate exercise into their lifestyle.” The ladies will also be well supported by friends Jo Harris and Suzie Le Cren who are also competing as part of the Pink Pilates team in the challenge and the team have been given free entry to the race. So far the women have managed to fundraise more than $1900, a huge advance on the $500 Janine says she initially set as a goal. Flood costs in the millions

It will be months before the total cost of last week’s flood is known but it will be well into the millions of dollars says Nelson mayor Aldo Miccio. Most of that will be felt by insurance companies but dozens of homeowners in Stoke and Richmond are facing hefty bills and loss of precious family items, including photographs. Aldo, who took a first-hand look at the damage to businesses in the Wakatu Estate

last week says it’s devastating for them. “They’re upset and disappointed but everyone is dealing with it and coping with it differentl. But the general consensus is people are getting on, cleaning up and getting their businesses back up and running.” Aldo says reports are being written about how the council culverts coped in the rain and why some of them failed. “We need to look at that but hearing more reports as the

days go on people are talking about a wall of water that wasn’t actually following any of the streams. It just came down through the paddocks because it was so intense so it’s probably not the best example of pointing to the culverts and saying they didn’t work.” The flood that has damaged homes and business also appears to have ruined the floor at the $12 million Saxton Stadium. A report is being compiled on the floor and

the options for the council but it is looking increasingly unlikely that it will able to be saved. The cost of the floor will be around $500,000, but is insured. The stadium is currently closed and will remain so until further notice the council said last week. Aldo says the wood on the floor has buckled and he expects it to be out of action for months while it is replaced.

Seat makes a mark on street A relocatable seat built for just several thousand dollars is the latest council innovation to help tidy up Bridge St. The seat was put into place last Friday with Nelson City councillor and designer of the project, Mike Ward, working through the night to have it ready in time. Mike says the project would have only cost a couple of thousand dollars, well under the $12,000 budget and he would like to see more of them on Bridge St and other Nelson streets. He says the seat was made out of wood that was lying around at the Nelmac yard, an old “munted” lamp post and other bits and pieces. He says the most expensive item in the seat was the two plants. The seating takes up one car park space and is outside Akbaba’s Kebab House. The structure includes a deck, seats, planters and a sculpture. It’s been a quick

turnaround, as it is being installed just three weeks after the council committed to doing it. The initiative is not a replacement for the proposed Bridge St upgrade, says the council, which is earmarked for the next financial year. Aldo says that he thinks people will love it. “It’s turned out really well based on Mike’s wonderful concept sketch. I encourage everyone to stop and take a seat next time they are strolling down Bridge St. I’d also like to thank the businesses on Bridge St who have supported our efforts with this trial. It’s great to feel we’re all working together to make Nelson a better place.” Shoppers seemed to be just as keen on the addition to Bridge St. Several spoken to by Nelson Weekly said it looked good with only one against the seat. “It looks cool, I’d use it,” said Tina Andrews.

Massive turnout for Anzacs

The largest turnout ever greeted the region’s returned service people at Nelson’s dawn ceremony on Anzac Day last week. Nelson RSA president Barry Pont says there were around 500 more people at the dawn service than the year before and more people at the Stoke service a few hours later. He says the turnout is a fantastic show of support and recognition for the region’s service men and women who have given their life or services to New Zealand in times of war. “It’s great to be involved in an Anzac Day with all the crowds there and so many younger people. Twenty years ago there were more RSA members there than anyone else, that’s certain-

ly changed, now we’re the minority.” World War 2 veteran George McKay was the honoured guest at the ceremony, which was conducted by Bishop Richard Ellena. More than 200 people attended the mid-morning Stoke service, more than ever before, according to Barry. Others wreath layings were at the Boer War memorial at Queens Garden’s, the World War 1 memorial at the cathedral gardens, and at the Wakapuaka and Marsden Valley cemeteries. At the cemeteries members of the TS Tailsman sea cadets and the Nelson Air Training Corps placed poppies on each of the graves of those in the RSA section of the cemetery.

Family lose everything in flood Phillip Rollo

A family of four lost all of their possessions during last Sunday’s flood and do not have insurance to claim on any of it. Lee Cole was holding back tears when he described the moment he and his partner Hayley Lincoln had to climb out of the window with daughters Ella, 7, and Abbie, 3, just to get to safety, before returning to save what he could within the space of half an hour. “It was just heart breaking. The first couple of days after were just surreal with the stress, knowing we don’t have anything for the girls. It was like the whole world was coming down on you,” Lee says.

He says the young family was just “chilling out” in the living room when the flood started on Sunday evening. He first noticed a drain outside “bubbling up”. “It just started rising up and both our neighbours were a bit worried. Once it started coming down the driveway we knew we were screwed. I thought it was going to drain off but it just sat there. Once it was in the backyard there was nowhere for it to go except for into the house and that’s when we started freaking.” Lee, who says the whole family is now living in his mother’s two bedroom house, grabbed towels and blankets and began stacking them near the doors, hoping to barricade the home. “I thought I was holding it off, until I heard the girls scream. I ran into the lounge and they were standing

there with this water coming towards them. At that stage I knew I had lost the battle. I was just thinking ‘let’s get the kids out of here.’” Wading through waist deep water, Lee says he saw beds and toys floating through the house. “Half an hour into it I knew there wasn’t going to be much to save. You could hear the pipes bursting down the street and you could smell the sewage.” Lee says it will be at least six months before his family can move back into the Arbor-Lea Ave rental – not that his daughters want to go near it. “They don’t want to come back. It took a lot for them to come back down today because of what happened you know. It’s still quite fresh in their minds.” He couldn’t put a price on how much he had lost. “We’ve lost photos; things that are priceless to us. We had just bought a brand new super king bed and to see that floating up was just crazy.” When questioned about not having contents insurance, Lee says he had always had it, just not on this house. One of his parents had even warned him about not having it. “My words were it’s not like we’re going to have a tsunami or get flooded.” He was thankful for the support he had already received from the community and says he was inundated with clothes for his two girls just days after the flood. But one thing he was still seeking help with is some household items.” To help the Cole family, contact Lee on 027 667 7053.

Travelling the world for love Sam and I met through mutual friends at high school. He tells me now that the attraction was instant, however his best friend at the time had a thing for me, so under the strict influence of the teenage "boys code," it wasn’t until Sam saved his friend from an oncoming car that he was allowed to ask me on a date. Having finally plucked up the courage Sam asked me (in possibly the least romantic place ever) at our local swimming pool in the UK. I hadn’t seen Sam in that way before, but he was

kind and more mature than the other boys I knew. And so we began dating at age 14. Sam was my first boyfriend, and initially I’ll admit I didn’t think much of it. But after 3 weeks of dating I became ill with the flu. After not hearing from me, Sam rang, and found out I was unwell. He lived two villages away, and being only 14 had no car. Nevertheless, through snow and below freezing temperatures, he walked for 2 hours to bring me a teddy bear, a film and chocolate. Well, they say the way to a girl’s heart is through her stomach, and when I opened the door to find him practically on the brink of hypothermia, my heart melted. Then, when I was 17 and Sam 18, my father got a job in New Zealand. Telling Sam that I was moving was one of the hardest things I've had to do. Sam promised me that he would follow when he finished school. Sam rang every day, which meant being awake at all kinds of hours, but I desperately needed that familiar voice. The long distance was tough, but true to his word, after 9 months, Sam finished his exams and the very same week was on a flight to NZ. When he arrived at the airport, jet-lagged and carrying all his worldly possessions, ready to start a new life with me on the other side of the world, I couldn't help but be reminded of that first day I began to fall for him; there was truly no distance he wouldn't go for me. At the beginning of 2012 we moved into our first place together, with Sam working full-time to support me as I complete the third and final year of my nursing degree. We are very much looking forward to the next chapter in our lives and our many more adventures to come!

Students praise compulsory computers writing thing and I'd prefer typing that, rather than just writing it down." Sean Powick says a positive was the ability to take documents home. "When you take it home you can talk to your teacher about what we're doing. You can just give them an email and it's a good way to know you're on the right track with homework." However, Sean was concerned that he would lose his handwriting skills if he solely relied on a laptop keyboard. "It gets quite messy sometimes and the ability of my spelling is appalling and spell check is so easy, but it's probably not so good for my education. Sometimes it would be good to use a pen and paper just to keep your skills up." But while computers are not compulsory for students outside of the Year 9 catchment, others were still being encouraged to bring them to school. Nicola Morris, who was initially against bringing a laptop to school because of the

The first term of compulsory computers has finished at Garin College and its students couldn't be happier with the results, although some aren't prepared to throw away the pad and pen just yet. Garin College told all incoming Year 9 students that a laptop was mandatory for 2013, and although some were initially concerned by the price tag, all students spoken to by the Nelson Weekly say they would recommend the move to students at other schools. George Beasley says convenience has been the big plus for him since enrolling at the school. "It's just one thing you need to get out for all of your classes instead of lots of books. It's all stored on one machine and it's easy to carry," he says. "It might be a bit different in a school with more pupils but I think it's definitely worth a try." Lucy Traynor says typing on a laptop has been a lot easier than writing with a pen. "We've just finished in English doing a big

half, you need to tell everyone to do it." Deputy principal Denis Moriarty says it was expected to take five years before the school made computers compulsory for all students, as it would just force the rule on each catchment of Year 9 students. However, due to the success, he says it's "highly likely" that it will take just two to three years. "The big jump has been WI-FI [wireless internet]. As soon as we had that at the school then why wouldn't we use it? Half the senior school is tearing their hair out because they can't get to use a computer, but the irony is they have one at home." Denis says the only downside is affordability, but he even went as far as labelling that a "non-issue". "St Paul's [Catholic School] are letting five year olds use iPads in class, so why would you not expect to use a laptop at secondary school? These guys are digital natives and it just comes naturally to them. This isn't the future, it's the present."

Undefeated Wanderers wrap up first round It only took three games but Taylor’s Contracting Wanderers has already earned itself some silverware. With just one more weekend left in the Car Company division one’s first round, Wanderers are guaranteed to sit on the top spot, claiming the Moller Cup after a come-from-behind 21-18 win against Star & Garter Waimea Old Boys at the Brightwater Domain. Waimea Old Boys could have spent this weekend resting up with the trophy, but it will instead spend the bye weekend looking back at how it let an 18-7 second half lead slip. With four players sent to the sin bin at varying stages throughout the match, teams had looked to make the most of the numerical advantage. And it seems as if Wanderers did the better job in that department with nine and ten combination Jackson Harvey and Jesse Pitman crossing for

Suburbs can’t seal the deal The Nelson Suburbs Seals were unable to edge past FC Nelson Locomotive on Saturday with last year’s top two sides playing out a goalless draw at Guppy Park. FC Nelson Locomotive, who are the defending Nelson Pine Industries division two champions, remain in second spot after the fourth round but are already five points behind Motueka AFC who have won every game so far. Motueka are the clear pace setters and demolished Nelson College’s 2nd XI 16-0 on Saturday to sit on 12 points with a positive goal deficit of 25.

In other division two games, FC Nelson Fuji Xerox Reserves beat Flight Cell Tahuna 1st XI 3-2 at the Botanics and FC Nelson Fulton Hogan beat AMI Nelson Suburbs 2nd XI 4-2 at Saxton Field. In the Nelson Pine Industries division one competition, Richmond Athletic dropped points for the first time this season going down 3-0 to FC Nelson Sprig & Fern. Nelson College got back on track with a 5-0 win over FC Nelson NBS Colts at the Broads and AMI Nelson Suburbs first XI and Wakefield FC played out a goalless draw at Saxton Field.

First XVs ready for Press Cup

Three weeks of local derbies highlight the start of the Press Cup with both Nayland and Nelson College taking on Waimea before each other. For both teams the game against Waimea is a must-win, although their goals for the rest of the season appear a lot different. Nelson College coach Bill Liddell says his side must be confident going into the season, despite missing out on a top two spot last season. "You should always approach the season with a degree of confidence but you shouldn't be over confident," he says. Nelson travel to Lincoln High School for round one this Saturday before returning to play Waimea and then Nayland. Bill says the 2013 squad is more balanced than the one that took the field last year. When asked who would be key players to look out for, Bill listed a number of boys who could make a name for themselves this season but there was no one he praised more than first five-eighth Mitchell Hunt, who will captain the side. "He's crucial. His rugby nous, his ability to attack space, his ability to find space for his other players and his tackling is just extraordinary," he says. "Of all my years of coaching I haven't come across [a player like him]. I've been lucky enough to coach Mitchell Drummond as well and these are extraordinary young men." Another player Bill expected big things from is Te Puoho Stephens – a winger con-

"Starting from the word go I have told the boys we are going to put in a new chapter of rugby at Nayland College. People are wary of putting the jersey on, fearing they might get a hiding so for me as a coach I want to put that self belief back into Nayland rugby and make sure the boys are confident as a team. They are already starting to believe."

While both of last year's finalists will contest the competition's other conference, there were a number of potential banana skins in the Northern/Southern Section, including Marlborough Boys' College, Waimea College and Timaru Boys' High School. "Waimea are well balanced, well drilled and are the best Waimea side I've seen for a number of years. Marlborough is another side that will be a step up and both those sides caused us a lot of grief last year. You don't know who will sneak up on you so you can't even take Nayland College for granted." At the other end of the spectrum, new Nayland College coach Seta Sauira just wanted to install some self confidence into the side that has only won once since joining the expanded competition in 2011. The first and only win came against Waimea College in season one, and Seta says the players are well aware of that result going into Saturday's game against the Richmond side. "This is a game that we targeted to win and it's as simple as that," he says. "We're very fortunate to have Waimea first up because of what happened in the past. We want to be their bogey team and it's a blessing to have them first." Leading the Nayland College first XV is goal kicking hooker Kendall Hodson while Fijian imports MiMitchell Hunt will lead the Nelson College first saele Tabua and Lote Saulekaleka XV in this year's Press Cup rugby competition will return to add some key firewhich begins this weekend. verted into an openside flanker. Te Puoho made the Condor 7s tournament team last year and it was his performances during that national competition that showcased a new skill-set. "He certainly gets around the paddock and he was pretty impressive for us again on Saturday [during a pre-season game against the second XV]. He's a big strong athletic boy, he wanted to have a go and we were keen to try him there."

Giants off to a flying start The Fico Finance Nelson Giants remain unbeaten so far this season with a 3-0 record after a come-frombehind 91-90 win over the Taranaki Mountain Airs on Saturday. Josh Pace was again the standout as the Giants overcame a 20 point half time deficit to edge the Mountain Airs in the final stages of the game. Josh had 28 points including the final successful shot of the game which put Nelson into the lead. Phill Jones added 23 points and Erron Maxey and Brook Ruscoe also got into double figures in a good night

for the Nelson scorers. Earlier on the weekend the Giants had surpassed a young Waikato Pistons side 93-78 in Hamilton. Erron top scored with 26 points and also took 15 rebounds. The Giants currently sit third on the NBL standings with a game in hand behind the star-studded Wellington Saints and the Otago Nuggets. Nelson will head south for a double header this weekend taking on the Southland Sharks and the Nuggets before returning to face the Saints at the Trafalgar Centre on May 11.

Classic race ready to take off

The Top of the South VMX club is holding its annual Ray Anderson Memorial Trophy and Club Champs this Sunday at Tadmor. Ray Anderson was a member of the Nelson motorcycle club from 1947 to when he passed away in 2003 and spent 52 years as secretary or treasurer, as well as being a member of the MNZ executive in the early 1960s. Ray received the service award medal from MNZ in 1996 and also the Nelson community service award in 2002 for long-standing and valuable contributions to the sport of motorcycling. Ray raced all over the country and was involved in most motorcycle businesses in Nelson

until he retired at age 65. The Ray Anderson Memorial Classic Trophy recognises this contribution and is raced for by a different class each year drawn on the day which gives all senior riders the opportunity to race for the trophy. All the classes race for the club champs. The 2013 event is proudly sponsored by Morley Motorcycle and Marine. Food and drink are available on the day with the profits from the food going to the Rescue Helicopter. Sign in from 8am and racing starts at 10am. For more info see www.sportsground.co.nz/tosvmx or phone Rob Anglesey (03) 522 4007.
