World Cup to Nelson Cricket’s showpiece event coming to Saxton Oval in 2015

Cricket’s biggest tournament is coming to Nelson, it will be confirmed today. The ICC Cricket World Cup is reported to be one of the world’s largest sporting events with 2.2 billion viewers watching the last world cup on television. In 2015 the tournament will be played in New Zealand and

Australia and Nelson Weekly understands that Nelson’s bid will be confirmed as successful today, with at least two pool games to be played at Saxton Oval. Nelson mayor Aldo Miccio confirmed his diary includes a trip to Wellington for the official launch of the world cup today and

andrew@nelsonweekly.co.nz that only mayors of successful bid cities were invited to attend.

He says if the bid is successful it will be huge news for Nelson and will bring back the hype and excitement the city saw during its hosting of the Rugby World Cup in 2011.

Fishing fleet blessed and ready for hoki season There was a stellar turnout for the Blessing of the Fleet commemorations held on Sunderland Marine Pier on Saturday. Mike Smith, spokesperson for the annual event, says he was more than impressed with the turnout for what was a special occasion in more ways than one, as Saturday’s ceremony was the 13th time the event has been held. While the commemorative event signals the start of the main fishing season for hoki and scallops, it is mostly held to remember those who have lost their lives at sea says Mike. The two-parted ceremony included a blessing from Reverend Jeff Cotton, Father David Gruschaw and Archdeacon

Andy Joseph alongside performances from the Nelson Youth Brass Band, the Nelson Christian Academy and the T S Talisman Cadets, who provided a guard of honour for the proceedings. Mike describes the event as incredibly moving. “Being out on the pier you are full of emotions. It is very, very moving.” The addition of an interpreter for the deaf community and a much closer display than usual by the Nelson Marlborough Rescue Helicopter are changes that will stay on for next year’s event says Mike, and while the official blessing was a way of “remembering those who have lost their lives at sea”, the rest of the day was about celebrating what the local boating and fishing industry does for the community, he says. “The highlight is seeing the crowd joining in.”

Cricket world cup coming to Saxton FROM PAGE 1 “This will be second only to the rugby world cup as far as events that Nelson has hosted. It will be fantastic for our city to be a part of. The Cricket World Cup is huge in England, Australia and South Africa, not to mention India and Sri Lanka and the other Asian countries. It’s their national sport so the cup will attract a huge spectator audience on TV as well as a lot of trav-

elling tourists.” The council’s cost to prepare the bid is capped at $900,000, including staff time. Nelson Cricket’s Ed Shuttleworth says the event would be fantastic for our region. “The profile and legacy such a tournament brings would be felt for years to come, with increased awareness, participation and facilities. Every school kid would remember back to 2015 when they watched games at Saxton Oval.”

Tahuna dump has reopened The region’s main dump, the Pascoe St transfer station, is open for business again following major maintenance on its crane.

The gantry crane clears waste at the site and its removal for the upgrade meant the operation closed on June 4, which is the qui-

etest time of year for the facility. The crane had just undergone its 25-year warrant of fitness and was sent to Auckland for work, but there were unexpected delays.

Wood burners could make comeback Wood burners could make a comeback to Nelson with two of the contenders for the mayoralty saying they want them back. Installing a wood burner in a new home or updating an old wood burner are no longer allowed in some parts of Nelson city after the Nelson Air Quality Plan came into effect. While the policy has achieved its goal of cleaning up polluted air in certain areas of the city, it has left some residents upset that they can no longer afford to heat their homes with the prices of heat pumps soaring with the price of power. Bryan Waters says he was caught out because the council classified his Stanley Crescent home as being a part of Washington Valley, which has clean air restrictions. Because he lives in Beachville he didn’t act on upgrading his 1970s fire because he didn’t think he had to. Both of his neighbours use their fires because they were upgraded in time. After receiving an abatement notice for using his fire, he has been heating his home with a gas heater and fin oil heater. Both of which are uneconomical and come with “other risks”. He wants the council to reverse the notices and allow home-

The Sport Fishing for Youth Charitable Trust has won the Supreme Award at the 2013 TrustPower Nelson Tasman Community Awards. The Awards were announced and presented last night at a function at Seifried’s Estate and Winery. For winning the Supreme Award, the Sport Fishing for Youth Charitable Trust received a framed certificate, a trophy and $1500 prize money. It now has the opportunity to represent the district at the 2013 TrustPower National Community Awards, which are being held in Invercargill and the Southland region in March 2014. In total, TrustPower has given away over $6000 to various community groups through the awards. Tasman District Council mayor Richard Kempthorne says the Sport Fishing for Youth Charitable Trust is very popular in the eyes of many children in the region. “These volunteers are giving young children a brilliant fishing experience, something they may not have experienced before and introducing them to the freshwater environment in the Tasman district. The series of events they organise are very positive and at the same time are educating these young minds on the importance of protecting our environment. I sincerely congratulate them on receiving this award,” he says. Volunteers teach the youth the correct technique on how to catch a rainbow trout or salmon and once they land a fish

Rainbow hails ‘great conditions’ for skiers

The sun is shining and there is plenty of snow, which means conditions are perfect at Rainbow Ski Area. Following the school holidays, field manager Jono Hay praised July’s weather, saying the ski field has been open for a lot longer than this time last year with just three closed days. “It’s

unusual for this time of the year. We’ve had plenty of clear days which is good. It’s cooler over night which means the snow is holding up,” he says. “We’ve got beautiful spring snow conditions.” Numbers were tracking close to last year with “good numbers” throughout the school holidays.

“Feedback from customers has been really good, they’re saying our snow is better than down south where it can be quite hard and icy.” Most of the main trails were able to open throughout the holidays, which he credited to a new snow making pump which was installed over summer.

In the face of six fatalities nationwide, local logging insiders are welcoming wide-sweeping reviews into every logging contracting operation in the country. The reviews have been announced by the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment just weeks after the death of another forestry worker on the job, and although there has not been a fatality in the Nelson and Tasman regions this year, industry representatives here say they will do everything they can to keep it that way. After three serious harm notifications in the region since the beginning of this year, Moutere Logging director Dale Ewers says “bring it on” to any review that can help improve the health and safety of working in forestry. “We as an industry think that we are doing the right things and we think that we are heading in the right direction but the stats don’t prove that, so we welcome any help.” He says staff culture, mechanisation and a focus on safety have played major parts in keeping fatalities and accident rates down over the past few years but more can always be done. “I personally think we have made some major steps forward in the last two years and we are stepping in the right direc-

We are very passionate about this, it definitely hits home.” He says the industry is shifting more and more towards being fully mechanised, replacing men with machinery. Andrew Karalus estate value manager for Nelson Forests Limited says he is deeply concerned by recent safety trends in the forest industry. “We believe that everyone has the right to go home from work safe and uninjured. We understand the impact such tragic loss has on families, loved ones and the communities in which we all live. It’s unacceptable in any business and it adds to our motivation to relentlessly look for improvements to ensure everyone in our business comes home from work to their families every day.” He says he would welcome reviews into safety standards and is confident that the health and safety management systems developed and used by Nelson Forests Ltd and its contractors will benefit from the scrutiny.

Housing trust building in Nelson A trust that provides affordable housing for low income families says it is “easier” to build them in Nelson because of the help it gets from the council, meaning Tasman looks likely to lose out. Nelson City Council gifted the land and waived the development contributions for the latest project which saw eight homes built on St Lawrence St, near Victory.

While a $1 million grant from the Social Housing Fund accounted for nearly half of the costs, director Keith Preston believed the support from NCC makes it easier to build in Nelson, rather than Tasman, where the Tasman District Council do not waive development contributions. “It’s a real shame because there are some real housing need issues in places like

Motueka and Golden Bay,” he says. “It’s so much easier to work in Nelson unfortunately.” While Keith labelled the development contributions as a “substantial amount”, Tasman District Council communications manager Chris Choat believes they only make up about four per cent of the cost of a house and says it was a council policy to

treat all development proposals alike. He also says council would need to have the agreement of its ratepayers to support the project, as they were essentially requesting them to share the cost of providing the affordable housing. Only nine of the Nelson Tasman Housing Trust’s current 36 houses are in Tasman, with the rest in Nelson.

Fancy your recipe in our great cook book? Richmond Mall is cooking up a new idea to give every household a brand new cook book and they want your favourite family recipe to be one of the star attractions. The mall celebrates its 40th birthday this October and its manager Belinda de Clercq says the cook book is just one of the ideas the mall has to help celebrate the milestone. “This will be a great cook book and it’s great that it’s going to every home in the region and for free.” The cook book will be a collection of the best recipes in the region with locals asked to submit their favourite family recipe and have the chance to have it printed in the book and win vouchers to Richmond Mall.

To submit a recipe, simply pick up an entry form from the customer service desk on your next visit to Richmond Mall. When completed drop it into one of the Richmond Mall entry boxes. The overall favourite recipe will win a $500 mall voucher with a $250 mall voucher for the favourite recipe in each category. Belinda says she can’t wait to see what recipes come in. “I’m really looking forward to see what people drop in. It’s exciting to start a project like this and I’m sure the people of Nelson and Tasman will get in behind it.” For more information visit www. richmondmall.co.nz or visit the mall’s Facebook page.

Big Apple dream for local actress

A local actress is finally ready to take her place at a prestigous drama school, almost a year after being awarded a full scholarship to attend. Tickets available from Stoneridge Cafe Appleby Highway Saxton Stadium is likely to be reopened before the start of the South Island Masters Games, although Nelson City Council admits things will be “tight”. Media were given a tour through the flood damaged recreation centre on Friday, the first time since April’s flood. There, the council’s community facilities supervisor Arthur Nelson said the expected opening date is September 30, just one week before the South Island Masters Games on October 5. “We had regular liaisons with the contractors to make sure it’s on track and all I can say to you is that it’s on track,” he says. “We haven’t been told that it’d be a problem but if it is then Sport Tasman have been working with local groups and colleges to make sure we can hold the Masters Games anyway.” Basketball, volleyball and table tennis are scheduled to be played at the stadium during the tournament. All of the repairs in the stadium will be “like for like” and the entire cost is covered by insurance. The hardwood floor, which is arriving from Denmark, is the biggest project still to be

undertaken and is likely to be laid from August 20. The floor, which was worth an approximate $500,000, and the walls, had the most significant damage. When asked what steps will be done to make sure flood waters do not enter into the stadium again, the council’s executive manager for network services, Alec Louverdis, reinforced the rarity of the weather event. “We need to appreciate that this was a one in 500 year event and there’s nothing we could possibly construct to cater for that,” says Alec. “A lot of the stuff that came through was from the river and we are looking at how we can manage the capacity of the river but you’re not going to see a massive bung put in there.” Both NCC and Tasman District Council have allocated funds to improve the river systems in the nearby area, to quicken the flow out of creeks past Saxton Field. Sport Tasman also had to relocate its offices to the old netball pavilion and they are expected to be moved back shortly. Scott Construction Ltd was the main contractor involved in the repairs.

New caravan of the sky

Sounds Air have purchased another Cessna Grand Caravan (registration ZK-SAY) for their fleet bringing the total Caravans operating across Cook Strait to four. The aircraft was previously operating with Salt Air in Kerikeri and Sounds Air purchased it in May this year and it spent the last two months being repainted in Sounds Air fleet colours and had the latest ‘glass’ cockpit technology installed to match the rest of the Sounds Air fleet. The first commercial flight was on Monday 22nd July 2013 when 12 passengers boarded at Blenheim for a flight to Wellington. Each passenger was given a bottle of champagne to celebrate the occasion and then took their seats in the new seating configuration that gives every passenger more legroom. Sounds Air’s other Grand Caravan is also to be fitted with the new seating configuration in the coming weeks. The new aircraft is going to complement the existing fleet on flights from Wellington to Picton, Blenheim and Nelson plus gives us the opportunity to offer more charter flights and extra flights

Pipe band youth jet set to Germany Stoke’s pipe banding youth will jet set across the world next year after receiving an invitation to feature in a German music festival. The invite couldn’t have come at a better time for the band, who are currently putting the final flourishes on Braveheart - The Concert - their first ever choreographed and scripted showcase. The band, made up of predominately youth members, may be Scots at heart but have jumped at the chance to go on their first ever overseas trip says band spokeswoman and bass drum player Helen Gilchrist. The concert, based on the story of William Wallace’s historic fight for freedom, reflects the story of the Celtic Pipe Band as it’s grown from small beginnings into a fullyfledged, successful competitive unit says Helen. The show will include traditional pipe band music, contemporary Scottish music, singing, and some of the region’s best young highland dancing talent. Tickets are available from Ticket Direct, The Theatre Royal and Richmond Mall information desk.

The education program is awesome - keep up the good work! Thanks and take care! - May 2013

Anyone who has worked through a funding crisis knows how crippling it can be. Trying to plan for a future that may not exist can sometimes be a leap of faith too far. On the other hand, sometimes out of adversity and uncertainty, great plans can be born. Government funding for Nayland College’s Adult Community Education (ACE) programme ended in 2009 and the Board committed to support the continuation of a selffunded programme in the short term. The programme has continued to exist because students continue to enrol but the stark reality is that if the programme is not financially sustainable through student course fees, other funding support is necessary. If it becomes a cost to the school it will, like many other school ACE programmes, disappear. Working together in collaboration with other community education initiatives in Nelson to create efficiencies and strengthen the sector is something which was explored by research funded by

ACE Aotearoa. This showed that 81% of the community education providers in the Nelson Tasman region had an interest in collaboration - the most preferred being to develop a shared website - which would also provide a mechanism for sifting out duplication and calendar clashes and opportunity for resource-sharing. Another level of collaboration could come through shared administration resources for enrolment management. Resourcing is required to implement these ideas into action and funding and community support is needed to get there. In the meantime, Nayland invites you to sample a course from this terms programme and leave you with a student comment from the Term 4 2012 MYOB course “From this course I have learned better procedures, loads of information to put into practice, how to set up different departments, more confidence within the MYOB system and most importantly how it can improve my business to its full potential!” View the FULL list of courses at http://comed.nayland.school.nz or Ph: 547 9769 to enrol. The roller derby season is well and truly underway for Nelson’s local team, with Saturday night’s clash between the Sirens of Smash and their Wellington rivals resulting in a high score battle. While the game, which was held at the Tahunanui Roller Skating Rink, didn’t end in a win for the Sirens, who lost the bout against the Richter City Convicts 228 to 146, team

member Tara Forde says it was nice to compete in front of a home crowd. “It was great to have a really supportive home crowd, hearing people cheering, it was good fun.” The Sirens of Smash have been competing on the national roller derby scene for the past three years and are now in training for the National championship which will be in Palmerston North in October.

New playground for Tahuna street Nelson in-home educator Cherie Skinner thought it was time her local playground got a makeover so she made it happen within a few months. Cherie’s lived near the playground on Blackwood St Reserve for the past 12 years and became frustrated with the tired looking equipment. “I’m a PORSE educator and my children love going to the playground but I was fed up with the layout. The swings were on separate sides of the playground and there was nothing to climb on.” So Cherie emailed the Nelson City Council assuming her letter would be shelved, but to her surprise she was contacted immediately. A meeting was set up at the playground and Che-

rie raised her concerns and desire for a revamp. “It was amazing, the council acted upon everything I requested. Within months the whole playground had a makeover.” As an in-home educator, Cherie cares for three children in her home, Benjamin Haydock, 18 months, Hazel Haydock, two and Lucy Dancey, two. She’s thrilled that they can now enjoy a well-resourced playground at their back door. “It’s so much better now because the children have things to climb on and the swings are positioned next to each other so I am not running backwards and forwards across the playground."

SPORT Joseph Parker tipped for Nelson fight Our tippers Your Community Newspaper

New Zealand's biggest boxing star looks set to fight in Nelson with his promoter in Nelson on Friday to discuss a possible bout. Joseph Parker is a rising star in the world of heavyweight boxing and his management team, Duco Promotions, are keen to have him fight at the Trafalgar Centre in a bout dubbed the Battle of Trafalgar. Dean Lonergan, of Duco, was in Nelson on Friday to attend the official opening of the Victory Boxing Club's new gym on Vanguard St and while he was here, held talks with Nelson City Council and those behind the succesful Fight 4 Victory fundraiser.

Nelson mayor Aldo Miccio and Duco Promotions Dean Lonergan in the ring on Friday night. Nelson mayor Aldo Miccio says talks went well and he's hopeful that Parker will fight in Nelson next year in late March or early April. "Nothing is confirmed but he is extremly keen on bringing Joseph Parker

here and we want him to come, so now we just need to go through the business plan and the dollars." He says the event will be great for Nelson. "We want this to be a year on year event so we have this Trafalgar belt up for grabs every year and while we want it packed with Nelsonians we also want people from Auckland, Hamilton, Wellington and Christchurch to come along." The deal to bring Parker to Nelson would involve the Nelson City Council, private sponsors and those behind the Victory Boxing Gym. Aldo says he has "no doubt" the event would attract a sold out Trafalgar Centre.

Suburbs tourny attracts top clubs Richmond was the only local winner at the recent Nelson Suburbs Club Cup, beating FC Nelson 1-0 in the 15th grade final at Saxton Field on Friday. Jamie Cresswell, who was causing havoc up front all tournament, scored the

only goal in a tightly contested final, while captain Berti Fish also played a significant part in the victory, sending in the cross for the young forward. The tournament was held on Wednesday and Thursday at Saxton Field, Nelson Suburbs 13th grade midfielder Caleb Gardiner in action during the Nelson Suburbs Club Cup on Friday. Photo: Phillip Rollo.

Waimea College and the Avery. More than 20 teams took part in 12th grade, 13th grade, 14th grade and 15th grade matches. The majority of the competition comprised of sides from within the Mainland Football Federation, although there were three from Auckland and three from Wellington. Organiser Nigel Push hopes the tournament will become the premier club competition in New Zealand for the four age groups and says it was a great opportunity for the Nelson players to get experience against out of town opposition. “It lets a lot more kids get involved and it also lets them know where they are at, at a national level as well,” he says. Richmond and FC Nelson’s 15th grade sides were the only Nelson-based finalists, with some struggling to cope with the skill level shown from the North Island sides. “At the end of the day most clubs send their strongest teams and those teams from Auckland generally tend to be strong because they’ve got big populations. They don’t bother travelling unless they fancy their chances.”

pick Chiefs for Super 15 final

The Super 15 final is on this Saturday and your local tippers are picking the Chiefs. The tipping competition involving local business personalities has been a huge success and with just one game left to play the winner is assured his title. Shane Laurence of 2 Degrees has picked 87 out of 124 games so far and originally hailing from the Waikato it's no surprise he's going for the Chiefs to win their second successive title. "I'm Waikato born and bred and I have to go Chiefs." He says the competition has been good to be a part of and his picks have been based on a strong formula. "Form, home advantage and gut feeling, that's what I rely on but it's probably a bit of luck more than anything," he says. "The whole thing has been really cool actually, I get quite a few people comment on it so it's been really good to be a part of." The competition has been so successful that Nelson Weekly will be expanding it to run during the ITM Cup, with some new faces added.

Fishing with

Nelson Dawnbreakers Fishing Club Over the last few weeks or so the weather has been a bit sporadic with few fishing reports coming in, so I thought it might be a good chance to remind everyone of some basic safety precautions and develop your own critical checklist before heading out boating. Whenever you are going out on the water, make sure people are aware where you are going and more importantly, when you intend to be back. That way, friends and family won’t get unnecessarily worried and contact authorities causing in some cases, expensive and time consuming searches to be mounted. It pays to prepare a Two Minute form that has the details of your vessel, where you are going boating and when you are returning. Give it to someone who can contact the authorities if you don’t return by your scheduled time then someone can contact the Coastguard. Make sure you wear the appropriate clothing when going boating. Always wear a lifejacket when you go boating and always wear clothing that is appropriate for the conditions. A rule of thumb is that you should go for several layers of thinner clothing rather than one thick layer (thinner, multi layers trap air and retains heat better). You can always remove a layer if you get too warm. When going boating you must carry some form of communication device in case you get into difficulty. It is important when going boating that you carry at least two forms of communication. You never know when you might need to contact someone in a hurry. By far the best form of communication is a marine VHF radio. When you use a VHF radio it can be picked up by a range of different people at once, whereas a cellphone will only be picked up by one person. If you have a cellphone, then make sure that it is in a waterproof plas-

Troy Dando with a nice D'Urville Island winter trevally. tic bag. You should also carry flares in a waterproof canister to make it easier for people to find you. When going boating, it’s always a good idea to make sure your crew knows where all the safety equipment is and what they should do in case of an emergency. Check the weather forecast and if in doubt don’t go out. Also a really good idea is to develop a pre-launch checklist for your boat. It’s easy to forget or miss things when you go boating. You get caught up in the excitement of a day out on the water. There are lots of things you need to remember – such as ensuring you have enough food for the day, selecting the right sort of bait and making sure you know the route to get to where you're going. Why not develop a checklist of the critical things that you need to do before the boat goes in the water? Do you have enough fuel? Is there a lifejacket on board for every person on the boat? Do you have at least two forms of communications on board, such as a VHF radio, a fullycharged mobile phone or flares? Have you inserted the bungs? Are the batteries fully charged? Get your checklist printed and laminated, then stick it to your dashboard where you can't avoid seeing it. Before you launch, satisfy yourself that you've completed all the checks. This will result in a safe and pleasant day's boating with no hidden surprises.

School girls win promotion

While overhead conditions were favourable at Saxton Courts on Saturday the chill and wind factor were far from pleasant as the day progressed. In Grade 4 it was a top of the table clash between Tapawera Nelson Honey and Prices Pharmacy White, with the winner gaining promotion to Grade 3 for the Championship Round. There was absolutely nothing in it throughout the forty minutes, with neither team gaining an ascendency. Prices White looked a little “messy” through court to begin, however once they settled they play some nice straight lines. Brit Kelling put in some beautiful feeds from wing attack, while twins Dakota and Cheyenne Sigley had strong performances. Ariana Te Kawa Wiremu was strong in the air to take some great ball at wing defence before moving to goal shoot in the second half. Goal keep Di Pegg put in a solid performance when she got a number of deflections and was quick to gather the loose ball. Tapawera took the game 23-21 and will now play in Grade 3 for the Championship Round. Promotion/relegation game: The promotion / relegation game between Prices Pharmacy A and Nelson College for Girls was played on Sunday. The game had been deferred on account of representative commitments. The opening quarter was a low scoring affair with the ball being turned over numerous times. Prices

Nelson Old Girls Harrington's Hustlers GD is Susan Lummis gets a pass away. Photo: Phillip Rollo. had their noses in the front 7-6 at the first break. Prices lifted the bar in the second quarter to lead 18-12, as the college girls struggled to get quality ball into their shooters. Prices fought for their survival in the premier grade with better through court play, which was finished off by shooters Dana Wilson and Rebecca Dudley. Goal defence, Sarah Steele made a significant contribution in the 35-23 win. It was a huge ask for Prices to then back up to play Jacks OPD in the first round of the Championship Round at 6.30pm. By all accounts they rose to the occasion and while beaten by the defending champions they were very much in touch until the final stages when fatigue set in to lose 45-61. Premier grade preview: At 5.45pm there will be the club derby between Prices A and

Prices Black. The Black team were promoted to premier grade in the second round and scored a convincing win against their shell shocked club mates. The A team will be out to turn the tables on Thursday. Richmond Robbie’s Bar & Bistro are hitting their straps at the right time of the season, after some mediocre performances in the second round. Scoring machine Nicki Rampton is in excellent form and Waimea College will have their work cut out for them trying to contain her however they have plenty of talent to counteract her. Jacks OPD snuck through with a solitary one goal win against Stoke NBS in their last encounter. On paper Jacks look to have all their bases covered, however if Stoke NBS bring their A game, they could once again push the title contenders.

FC Nelson win top football league FC Nelson Sprig & Fern are the champions of the footballing region after battling to a 1-0 win over Nelson College on Saturday. Heading into the game both sides had the opportunity to win the league but it was FC Nelson which took the opportunity with a goal early in the first half to Kerry Eggers. Coach Robbie Hansen says the goal settled his team and put more pressure on Nelson College as they needed to win

the game to take the title. "We had already hit the upright and the cross bar when we scored so that settled my boys down and we were able to get into the game." He says Nelson College put plenty of pressure on his side and the young legs of the school boys showed towards the end of the game, but FC Nelson were able to hold on to claim the trophy. "We're pretty chuffed, the guys are rapt and all the hard work paid off. I think

it was a competitive league and it was a nice, close competition and to come down to the last game in the round robin I think is pretty special." He says the big crowd of supporters made it extra special and they created a great atmosphere. He also wanted to mention the hard work of manager Merv Ward. All of the first division teams will now play in the Top of the South competition, featuring teams from Marlborough.

Having trailed 36-10 at half time, there was no comeback in sight for Taylor’s Contracting Wanderers, who managed to score a few consultation points late in the game. James says the win was huge we believe in it, we’re part of it, for the club. “It has been a long we invest in it. time coming. Boys had plenty of x-factor right across the park and it was the big name players that certainly stood up to the younger Wanderers team. President Duane Whiting says his boys really deserved the win and he was thrilled with the huge crowd. “The coaches have stuck with a similar sort of a team [throughout the season] and the good thing is there are quite a lot of locals here," he says. "And the crowd was great, I think we have to thank the Nelson Weekly and Waimea Weekly there. The great promotion in the papers really did the trick." He says the atmosphere at the club, including a strong team bond, was a key part of the victory. “They have shown the best morale and spirit that I’ve seen in the whole time I’ve been involved with Waimea Old Boys.” Wanderers captain Jesse Pitman says Waimea Old Boys were ten out of ten on the day and admits the opposition’s attitude played a huge part in the final result. “They just ran hard and we couldn’t stop them. They were too good.” Despite losing its second final in the same season, Jesse says there are still plenty of positives to take out of the season. “It’s a hard learning curve but a lot of us it’s still only our second year of senior rugby so we’ll comeback stronger. You need the experience for finals because it’s a different ball game.”
