A see-sawing battle

Local group get their safer road crossing Jo Kent Reporter

jo@waimeaweekly.co.nz

A community group who raised concerns over the adequacy of the pedestrian crossings in Wakefield are celebrating this week after being told that the Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency is widening the pedestrian refuge on Arrow Street, making it safer for both people and traffic. Made up of local parents and members of the community, the Wakefield Road Crossings group have been campaigning for change tirelessly over the last year. Jenny Lines, a mum-of-three who fronts the campaign, says, “We are really pleased with the outcome of the Arrow Street crossing upgrade. A larger ‘S’ shaped refuge with cage and kerb build-out will be a vast improvement on what is currently there. It’s been a year of hard work creating submissions and presenting at meetings, so we are really happy to see that our work is creating some change.” The Waimea Weekly got behind the Wakefield Road Crossings campaign last November and has been closely following their progress. Various temporary measures were put in place until a final decision on how to im-

prove the crossing was made thanks to their efforts on behalf of the village. “A full safety investigation of the highway through Wakefield was conducted, given the parents’ and community’s concerns,” says Andrew James, system manager for Waka Kotahi, Top of the South. The report recommended a number of ways to improve the safety of the Arrow Street crossing, the busiest crossing point with most children at peak hours. “The next step for us will be pressing Waka Kotahi to implement the same upgrade to the Pigeon Valley crossing,” says Jenny. “The safety audit had already been done by the time McGazzaland opened in Wakefield. The new pump track is proving extremely popular for kids of all ages and the Pigeon Valley crossing is the key link to that and the school. This crossing is also on the direct path of the Great Taste Cycle Trail which is regularly used by families and riding groups.” Jamie McPherson, transport manager for Tasman District Council, says, “It has been impressive to see the proactive way the local community group went about getting this result. It’s a good step towards making streets safer for the Wakefield community. The Council has been happy to support

the initiative and to encourage Waka Kotahi to prioritise this work.” The official safety audit also identified the need for a crossing at the end of Martin Avenue. “We hope Waka Kotahi will acknowledge and action this too,” says Jenny. “There is currently no crossing down that end of town and many families have voiced concerns over this.” The group’s goal is to see an underpass installed in the future, but Waka Kotahi investigated that possibility and, due to a

number of reasons, ruled it would not be a cost-effective solution. “We haven’t given up on our goal of an underpass in the future, but until that is possible these upgrades combined would improve the connection between both sides of our village and make Wakefield a safer community for all to enjoy,” says Jenny. Wakefield School surprised Jenny with a Local Hero Award in last Friday’s assembly. “I went along to watch my son receive an award for his kindness. I never expected to be called up to get an award too,” says Jenny.

Group 1 to 3, which includes border workers, those in highrisk, front-line positions and those at high risk of getting Covid-19, are being vaccinated from now onwards. Group four, which includes everyone else who is eligible, will be vaccinated in age bands with over those 60+ being invited from 28 July. From 11 August, vaccinations will open to 55+, with 45+ from around mid to late August, and 35+ a month later. In October, vaccinations should open to everyone 16 and over. Most invitations are being made by text to the number held on record at your GP’s. Landline or email will be used where there is no cellphone and, if all else fails, letters will be sent. Earlier vaccinations can be applied for if you are travelling outside New Zealand for reasons of national significance or on compassionate grounds.

Retiree appeals for witnesses to assault Erin Bradnock and Jo Kent Retiree Steve Lavers was left shocked after a man launched a “coward’s punch” at him on Queen Street, Richmond, last Friday. The Christian preacher was midway through a speech to a small crowd when a young man launched the unprovoked assault, leaving him with temporary loss of hearing and sore ribs. “I think that some of the things I was talking about must have triggered him because he walked past giving me two fingers up, right in my face,” says Steve. “I just kept talking into the mic about how we should speak up if we know people affected by drugs and help them to make their peace with God by reporting it to the police.” The incident occurred around 8pm outside the Summit Real Estate offices. “He walked off, but came back and grabbed my speaker,” says Steve. “I

The outcome could have been so much worse for me. I actually thought I’d lost the hearing in my ear for good.” The offender was a young man in his early 20s or late teens with “scruffy hair”. “There would’ve easily been about 15 people around who saw it. Everyone was asking if I was OK,” he says. Police say there is no CCTV footage of the incident, so Steve is appealing for witnesses to come forward. “I want this guy brought before the police so he can go through the restorative justice system and get the help he needs.” Police say to get in touch via 105 and quote file number 210621/2884 with info.

Asphalt plant No staff available to fill positions concerns Jenny Nicholson Jenny Nicholson

Reporter

jenny@waimeaweekly.co.nz

Residents near a proposed asphalt plant on Bartlett Road, Appleby, have raised concerns. They cite environmental factors, speed and noise of vehicles and the proximity to agricultural land as major issues and are wanting to raise awareness while there is still time for submissions to the Tasman District Council. “I’m stunned to comprehend that this could be considered as a proposed site to conduct this toxic activity,” says local resident Luke Tapper. He’s concerned there will be long-reaching effects of leeching into the ground, and contaminants to the air from the plant, which may also have negative effects on health and the agricultural community. Jarrod du Plessis from Tasman Bay Asphalt Ltd says it is highly unlikely that pollution from the site would impact local farmers and market gardeners, saying the emissions are subject to testing to ensure they fall within acceptable levels. He also states that the noise that is likely to be generated is less than the allowed limit and they will create a bund and acoustic fence to screen the activity, lowering the noise further. “We considered plenty of other sites. Unfortunately, McPherson Street and Lower Queen Street industrial zones are ruled out due to a combination of factors, and Brightwater has a shortage of suitable industrial land,” he says. The resource consent proposal is out for public view and can be found on Tasman District Council website, keyword search ‘asphalt’. Submissions are due to close on 5 July.

The hospitality skills shortage is at a crisis level according to Hospitality New Zealand, and Alexandra Unterberger from the Alpine Lodge in St Arnaud agrees. She has been unable to find the staff she needs, despite contacting Work and Income, Seek, and Trademe. “When Covid hit I understaffed to ensure my existing staff got enough work. It was the biggest mistake. We were pushed to the limit and now we aren’t able to find the staff we need,” says Alexandra. Although the industry welcomed the extension of working holiday visas, Hospitality New Zealand says it doesn’t address the severe shortage of skilled workers. Alexandra says that with many of those on working holidays wanting to move around the country, it isn’t ideal for staffing and there aren’t enough in the country to go around everyone. She would like to see more skilled staff coming into the country, saying that the hospitality industry was the number one earner for the country a few years ago. “We have a good core of Kiwis but we need the extra help,” says Alexandra. The Alpine Lodge has 160 beds and a restaurant that is open five days in the winter, but with the staffing shortage Alexandra is looking at closing the restaurant another day a week.

Christine Mortimer at the Alpine Lodge. Photo: Jenny Nicholson. “We can still feed guests because we have chefs, it is the front of house and cleaning staff we are short of,” she says. “We want them. We need them,” she says

referring to more staff. Hospitality New Zealand says they would like to see critical status extended to the hospitality sector.

ship will remain unchanged. Continuing along that road, speeds will drop from 100km/h to 80km/h, and finally into Wakefield where it will drop from 70km/h to 60km/h. Each day, around 11,500 vehicles travel between Hope and Brightwater, and 8,500 between Brightwater and Wakefield. More housing development is planned and the population will grow, making this road even busier. The changes will reflect that.

The new speed reductions along SH6 between Hope and Wakefield will come into effect on 30 July. The lower speed limits follow extensive engagement and consultation with the communities of Hope and Wakefield as well as road user groups, local councils and the NZ Police at the end of last year. “Ensuring speed limits are safe and appropriate for our roads is one of

the ways we are helping to create a safer transport system, so that when people do make a mistake it does not cost anyone their life,” says Waka Kotahi Director of Regional Relationships, Emma Speight. The new speeds will affect the Hope township where speeds will drop from 70km/h to 60km/h. Then the Hope to Brightwater stretch will drop from 100km/h to 80km/h. Green in more ways than one Jenny Nicholson

Countdown’s greenest store is proving a success with locals after it opened its doors last Wednesday. “This is an investment in the people of the region with over 100 staff, whether they are part time, after school, holiday or career workers,” says mayor Tim King, who cut the green ribbon at the opening ceremony. The 3450 square metre store aims to be New Zealand’s very first Green Star supermarket, which is an internationally-recognised, sustainability rating system for design, construction, and operation of buildings. MP Rachel Boyack,

who spoke at the opening, says the supermarket is an incredible achievement for the area. “Green Star’s ratings go from 1 to 6 and this store is going to be a 4. That’s something to really be acknowledged as we need to reduce our emissions across New Zealand.” Countdown aim to push that rating to a 6 by 2025. To help reduce carbon emissions, every fridge and freezer has a glass door. Ten doors save enough energy to power a New Zealand home for a year and save Co2 emissions equivalent to taking three cars off our roads for a year. They also mean warmer aisles for shoppers. Other green features

include solar panels on the roof, LED lighting, EV charging points for customers’ cars, digital shelf labels to reduce paper use, an electric truck for the delivery of online orders and water-saving taps. The instore pharmacy will dispense free prescriptions and the online service has a drivethru pick-up point to make the experience easier for customers. Countdown officials spoke of their appreciation of the Tasman District Council for their support throughout the project and the completion of the roading aspect ahead of schedule. Over 2,800 customers went through the checkouts on opening day.

Comfort dog provides emotional support FROM PAGe 1 Jo Kent The mental well-being of students is a hot topic right now, which is why Henley School in Richmond use Poppy as a comfort dog. “Animal therapy offers a wide range of support to children, from emotional regulation to helping to cope with high anxiety levels,” says principal John Armstrong. “We have run a dogs-in-school programme for a while and it’s shown real benefits for children with attachment or relationship issues.” Poppy is a labradoodle, and ideally suited in her role as a comfort dog. The breed is highly intelligent and trainable and they have low to non-shedding coats which makes them allergy-friendly – ideal for a school setting. “I notice morale picks up and the pupils seem to look forward to seeing her,” says John. “It really helps those who may struggle to make friends. When they have Poppy, other kids run over to pat her and a social interaction begins. This helps to build confidence.” “I love spending time with Poppy,” says Year 4 pupil Chéytn Dalgity. “She’s just

so calm to be around and it makes me feel important when people come over when I’m walking her.” John has noticed that when children are upset, Poppy seems to take the focus away from the problem. “It helps them stay mindful,” says John. “Having something to focus on helps them stay in the moment and that’s key when balancing emotions and regulating behaviour.” Although Poppy has proved popular at the school, John is well aware that some children can be nervous around dogs. “Poppy is a nice introduction for those kids who are perhaps scared or have had an unpleasant experience with a dog, as she’s so gentle,” says John. Many children will pat Poppy on the way into school and it sets them up for a better day. Giving her a stroke as they head out the gate after school ends the day in a positive way. “I notice many parents and children stop to pat her and she loves the attention,” he says. “Our school uniform provider, Dot Neiman, has even knocked up a Henley polar fleece vest for her now that it’s winter!”

A brand-new community sports space is being constructed in the site of the old bowling green in Brightwater’s Charlotte Lane. The project is part of the development of the Wanderers Sports Club community connection plan and is being funded by the Laura Hill Pinegrove Trust. Artificial turf is being laid over the 34x34 metre pitch, which will be used for a multitude of purposes. “This is 100 per cent for community use,” says Marty Davis, director of sports for Wanderers. “We want kindergartens, schools, scouts, churches, local businesses and more to use it.” The pitch will allow for volleyball, basketball, hockey, futsal and, with a sprung base, is friendly for older folk too. “We are hoping it will be used for intergenerational games. There are so many possibilities,” he says. Tiger Turf will finish the project by the end of July. “The pitch will have a covered roof eventually for all-weather use, but that’ll take a lot of fundraising first!” Photo: Jo Kent.

I could find an excuse to,” says Bailey. Although he loves the creative side of illustration he sees it as a side-line for the future, planning to look at a design career in engineering or architecture. Bailey donates some of the books to libraries, saying people have been nice to him so it’s nice to do something for someone else. He has also enjoyed going into primary schools to read the books to children.

Waimea College student Bailey O’Malley was just 13 when he first illustrated an article in a journal. From there Bailey has gone on to illustrate several books, including Carol Duffy’s book, ‘Do not feed the kea.’ He knows he is fortunate to have an income from something he loves doing. “I think I always wanted to ilProperty Management Ltd | MREINZ Bailey O’Malley with illustrations from a new book lustrate books. Love in a jar Jenny Nicholson

Waimea Intermediate School students formed a production line to create Aroha in a Jar last week. Banoffee pie was made in a jar to give away at Giving Aroha in the Park, which celebrated it’s second birthday on Sunday. Giving Aroha in the Park feeds around 70 people each week at Anzac Park, with the focus on the homeless community. “It feels really good to give back to the community. Homeless people don’t have things like this, and it will be filling for them,” says student Amos Haring. All year eight students have the opportunity to make ‘aroha in a jar’ with different groups making different products. Sushi, lasanga, salad, nachos, and breakfast have all been made by previous groups, with another group making tomato sauce jars for Kai with Love. It started when teacher Jo Townsend saw 1000 jars for sale.

She brought them and dreamed up the idea, knowing the importance of giving students the opportunity to grow and show empathy and compassion. Students lead all aspects of the jars, from deciding the contents, to designing the labels and producing the items. They also have the opportunity to join Jo on Sundays to help at Giving Aroha in the Park. Alice Ladley has chosen to attend several times and loves the friendliness and how good it feels to feed people. The food is made and put together at Pics’ The Food Factory, a space that can be used by community groups and start-up companies. Jo says it is great for students to have the opportunity to work in a commercial kitchen. Jo is looking for other community groups that the students can donate jars of love to. Please contact the school if you would like further information, by phoning 03 544 8994.

Preparing for a community disaster Jenny Nicholson Reporter

jenny@waimeaweekly.co.nz

Get Ready Richmond is a new initiative to help those in Waimea get ready for future disasters by looking to connect communities and encourage them to have conversations around helping each other in an emergency. While individual families may have a disaster plan in place if a disaster strikes, the second line of support is people in the houses around you, says the new coordinator of Waimea’s branch of Top of the South Neighbourhood Support, Maree Dunlop. “Having conversations before something bad happens is so important, finding out who has the skills to help and who might need help. In a disaster, civil defence may be focused on the centre of the disaster for the first few days. We are encouraging groups to have an emergency plan,” she says. She says, with all the development and growth in Richmond it would be great if we could foster a sense of neighbourly connectedness. The street she lives on wasn’t there 15 months ago, so all the residents are new. Over a barbeque and a few beers, they

Neighbours Sue Naughton, Maree Dunlop, Connor Dunlop, Carole Main, Shelley Burge and Andrew Dunlop. Photo supplied. learned their street has a flat of nurses, a fireman, specialists in IT and people working in building and construction. Knowing their skill base, and the needs of their neighbours means that they can plan and be available if anyone needs help. The focus of neighbourhood support has moved from the ‘80’s style of looking through the cur-

tains, to streets interacting in a way that suits that unique group of people. It may be as simple as an updated phone list each year or feeling ok to knock on a neighbour’s door and ask for help. “A lot of people are willing to provide help but just don’t know how to,” says Maree. A data base is available to help

people connect. Listing names, addresses, skills and needs, the data base is kept secure, and the information is not shared unless there is an emergency. In that instance, the information is given to Civil Defence so they know who needs support. In September, Maree and family moved from Wellington to Richmond and she says it is the

best decision ever, calling herself the Waimea cheerleader because she’s regularly telling friends she’s stumbled across paradise. She loves working with communities and seeing positive changes made through connection. For info on Get Ready Richmond or Top of the South Neighbourhood Support, phone 0800 876 746.

Huge leap in house prices

Groups seeking safety on buses

Jenny Nicholson

jenny@waimeaweekly.co.nz

The median house price in Tasman reached $850,000 in May 2021, both a record high and a record increase from the previous year’s May median of $701,500 and $585,000 in May 2019. Although the volume sold more than doubled, with 66 sold in May up from 31 in May 2020, sale volume comparisons were still skewed by the impact to the Covid-19 lockdown last year, according to Real Estate Institute of New Zealand acting chief executive, Wendy Alexander. In May 2019, 80 properties were sold. Tasman followed Auckland for the highest percentage annual increase from May 2020. Nationally the inventory levels are the second lowest since records began, with just 15,000 properties available. Nelson Tasman had 214 properties available, down from 395 in May last year, just 155 of these new listings, down from 179 last year. While nationally nearly a third of properties were sold by auction, there were none auctioned in April or May in Tasman. “Traditionally less homes are auctioned in the South Island,” says REINZ spokesperson Dee Crooks. “But it is a good way to find the value of a property and is transparent.” Over the Nelson Tasman region the average time for a property to sell was 29 days in May, much less than the 10-year average of 41 days. Dee says that investors and first home buyers are still relatively active despite the increase in house prices, showing there is currently still good capital gain to be found in properties.

A petition for mandatory fitted seatbelts on school buses has growing support with 6,500 signatures gained in four weeks. In March this year, a bus carrying Murchison Area School students crashed into a ditch injuring eight people. Acting principal Sarah Peacock says that in view of the incident, they consider seatbelts in buses very important, and they would certainly support them being mandatory. Anne Bolton remembers hearing that her son’s bus had crashed in 2011. “He was thrown through the window and woke up on the grass,” says Anne. “He had concussion, bad bruising but only a little cut on his head. His pockets were full of glass.” She says that particularly in areas where there are 100 km speed limits, seatbelts should be mandatory. The car that hit the bus her son was in was going at 100km/hour and the bus flipped three times. “It’s a no brainer and if you protect small numbers of people in one vehicle, why wouldn’t

A petition for mandatory fitted seatbelts on school buses has gained 6,500 signatures. you protect lots of people in one vehicle,” says Anne. Organisers of the petition say it is unsafe and illogical that parents who drop their children off by car at pick-up points for the buses, unbuckle their children from legislatively-required restraints and seatbelts to board buses that don’t have the same basic safety equipment. “Unfortunately, unless there’s a fatality, it doesn’t seem to count,” says Federated Farmers of NZ vice-president, Karen Williams. She doesn’t expect change overnight, but would like to see the Ministry of Education require, from a

given date, any company tendering for a school route having to have buses fitted with seatbelts. Kim Shannon, head of Education Infrastructure Service, says that the Ministry of Education’s transport services carry around 100,000 students daily, have excellent safety records and regularly assess transport service providers to ensure they comply with all relevant safety re quirements.“Res e arch carried out by Waka Kotahi in 2010, as well as international research, shows that the structural integrity of a bus has a significant im-

pact on child safety. Our requirements on this mean that students are less likely to be ejected from their seat or harmed in an accident,” says Kim. Nelson MP Rachel Boyack says it is her understanding that the Ministry of Transport has previously considered whether to mandate seatbelts on buses but that it found the cost of retrofitting seatbelts in all buses would be prohibitive. “The Minister (Hon Michael Wood) has signalled that he is keen to keep an open mind on this issue based on evidence if new information emerges,” says Rachel.

Visit St Arnaud Winter has arrived, and with the school holidays starting soon St Arnaud is a fantastic location to bring the family for day trips and overnight excursions. The delightful alpine village, just one hour’s drive from Nelson, is perched on the edge of Lake Rotoiti, making it the perfect base to explore the forest and mountains of Nelson Lakes National Park. It also has lovely cafés, shops, museums and art galleries to discover.

Lake Rotoiti Water Taxis

“Before the pandemic, a lot of my foreign passengers would compare Lake Rotoiti with Wolfgangsee in Austria or Lake Como in Italy,” says the owner of Lake Rotoiti Water Taxis. The area does have a distinctive feel to it, a quirky mixture of old New Zealand and the European Alps. “Lake Rotoiti Water Taxis can show you this unique area like no one else, as we have been looking after visitors to the lake since 1974!” Whether it’s boating one way to the lakehead and walking back, or staying onboard for

Alpine Lodge has an exceptional range of apartments, rooms and backpacker accommodation available, and a lovely bar and restaurant offering hearty and healthy breakfasts, lunches and dinners.

a tour, contact Lake Rotoiti Water Taxis, which also hire out kayaks and ice skates.

Antique and Classic Boat Museum

The NZ Antique and Classic Boatshow has always had a relaxed, slightly irreverent attitude, which is reflected in the Antique and Classic Boat Museum on Beechnest Drive in the heart of the village. It’s about fun, fine workmanship, the discovery of an ancient relic, or the creation of something wondrous and new. Over 30 great old craft that you can see close up, as well as a mighty collection of historic outboards.

A Good Electrician

About a dozen locals braved the cold for the Lake Rotoiti annual nude swim. With a strong southerly and waves hitting the shore, Bill … says he was very slow to get in the water and quick to get out. The air temperature was about 6c, but Bill says it wasn’t actually too bad. “It’s always cold there, very cold. It’s the wind chill that gets us,” says Bill. “Everyone was happy and felt connected. We went to a bach for a lunch together afterwards, which was a very convivial thing to do on a winter’s day.”

St Arnaud Café

Under new management, St Arnaud Café on Beechnest Drive is the ideal place for locals to call in and have a coffee and a chat. Formerly a tavern, the café will soon be licensed. They offer full breakfast, lunch and dinner menus as well as cabinet food, made fresh daily on the premises, including scrumptious homemade bread.

Their young chef, Karl, brings a lot of enthusiasm and new ideas to the business, and café owner Natalie leads their dedicated, friendly team in the kitchen and front of house.

The locals are very welcoming in St Arnaud. “Gidday, I’m Shane Steel - the man behind ‘A Good Electrician.’ My family and I have recently finished our house bus adventures around New Zealand and, at the end of it, found ourselves here, in beautiful St Arnaud.” After 13 years of electrical practice in the Deep South, Shane ventured out on his own as - a good electrician. “I have so far been met with an abundance of warmth and support from the local community - so here’s an attitude of gratitude to those of you who have supported the start-up of a small and local business. Because of this we have decided to stay on indefinitely!” For honest, reliable and smart electrical solutions, please do not hesitate to call - a good electrician.

Redwood Stables was running as usual, one November Saturday in 1861. Several of Mr Redwood’s labourers tended the horses. Jesse Redwood, Mr Redwood’s nephew, prepared pig food. Esau Russ and his friend Joseph Ellis discussed a foal. James Wratten minded his own business. “The animal has an ugly head,” remarked Joe, as Esau perched on the table. “Not so ugly as you make it out to be,” retorted Esau. “Liar!” Joe planted his fist in Esau’s ribs. Esau was a short man, but larger than Joe. They tumbled to the brick floor. As they tussled, rolling over and over, Esau eventually got the upper hand, thumping Joe with his fists. Jesse Redwood left them to it and went off to

Incident at Redwood stables

Got some news?

I recently read Saying Yes to Life - Despite Everything by Viktor Frankl, who was a survivor of the horrors of three years in Nazi concentration camps, in which his entire family, and pregnant wife, were killed. Frankl who was a psychotherapist and author is best known for his book Man’s Search for Meaning, in which he wrote that the one thing that imprisonment could not do was to remove our last great freedom - how we choose to behave or react to any given circumstance. He proved that despite prolonged suffering and torture, being able to still say yes to life is possible. He was hugely influential with a whole group of camp survivors who, after their ordeal, chose to celebrate life in every way they could, in spite of everything they had lost and endured. Frankl and some survivors found meaning in life through work, art, nature and music, and by adapting to whatever life threw their way. They did not let themselves become disillusioned, but they determined to find a path that always led to life. So much of what happens to us is beyond our control, but we each are responsible for how we respond to those events. How we choose. What is our attitude? Do we become bitter? Can we forgive? Can we still laugh? The great wisdom teachers say that you cannot truly understand anything if you begin with a ‘no’. My observation is that Jesus Christ is the one person who is the greatest example of saying ‘yes’ to life. Life is a gift. Therefore I say ‘yes’ to life! “Choose life, that you and your descendants may live.” Deuteronomy 30: 19

Inside the house nearby, Mr Redwood’s daughter Elizabeth sat at a window watching the scuffle, thinking it of little consequence until suddenly her son Francis ran in, yelling, “They’ll kill each other!” Elizabeth went out into the yard, intending to call Jesse

Redwood to make peace, but Esau had run into the stable. Joe appeared from the harness room. Elizabeth waited, thinking he wished to speak to her, but as he turned again, she glanced a gun in his hand. “Joe, don’t do it!” she shouted. Joe went in the door of the stable. “Come out and be shot, or stop in and be shot!” Joe lifted the gun to the door. “Don’t, Joe!” But the gun, loaded with

shot, went off, and echoed into silence. “Oh, he doesn’t scream!” cried Elizabeth. Francis ran off. Joe turned and crossed the yard toward Elizabeth. In disbelief she demanded, “Joe, what have you done?” “I have settled him.” Mr Redwood, having been alerted by Francis, appeared from the house to meet Joe. “You dirty scoundrel, you villain, what have you been doing?” “He isn’t dead,” cried Elizabeth. “He is,” said Joe. “I did it in a passion. I could not help it.” Mr Redwood approached the stable. The left hand door had opened about a third of the way. He tried to open it further, but it would not move. Esau lay dead with a large wound in his throat, his body blocking the door.

How in the heck did they get there? Now you know how good the new Kawasaki Mule range is. Rugged, reliable, ready for work and chasing those idiot sheep. Ph: (03) 547 2420

The see-sawing battle was brutal and enthralling with both sides producing plenty of bruising hits and some scintillating runs in difficult conditions at Trafalgar Park. years in Nelson and Tasman.

Experts in their field

The local couple are experts in their field. “We have over 16 years’ experience in our industry,” says Greg. “We know the ins and outs of printers and cartridges, how they work and why they don’t work. There are a lot of compatible cartridges out there which have low quality ink and toner or the ink and toner in them is not suited for the printer, so they will damage your printer and give you poor printing results. Whereas our inks are specifically formulated to work correctly in your printer. We also provide a full guarantee with all our cartridges.”

A family-oriented business

Cartridge Universe is a very family-oriented business. “Our son has recently finished working for us – he was our sales manager and has just left Nelson to follow his soccer career overseas. Wanderers weekly round up Taylors Wanderers Sports Club Div 2 team hosted neighbours Waimea Old Boys in another crucial game for both teams as they head to the play-off stages of the Nelson Bays Car Company championships. In typical wintery conditions it is a credit to both teams and their coaches that any quality rugby was produced in an extremely tight, hard fought contest. In the final analysis, 10 tries were scored with some absolutely defying the wet, uncomfortable conditions and highlighting the positive attitude exhibited by all players and ensuring that the surprisingly large crowd was thoroughly entertained. The Wanderers team started very well scoring almost from the kick-off, taking an early 7-0 lead. Waimea took a little

while to settle down but eventually dominated play for a period during which time they scored and both teams traded points. Although having a clear advantage at scrum time, through Josh Post, Ron Roberts and Kyle Davies, Wanderers were unable to exploit this strength and often struggled against a determined backline Waimea defence, although eventually Wanderers fought back to score just before halftime and were fortunate to go to the break only down by 2 points, 19-17. A good team talk resulted in a slight change of tactics in the 2nd half which included some fine mauling by the forward pack, allowing increased momentum, which resulted in an excellent pushover try and lead to finally breaking the Waimea

Old Boys resolve and taking maximum points with the bonus point victory at 36-24. It was a complete team performance with all players contributing, but Hunter Van der Fits ruled supreme at the lineout and impressed with some great runs. He fully deserved to be acknowledged as the best forward, with Jake Jenner also rewarded with a solid game in the midfield. Tries were scored by Gareth Palmer (2), Hunter Van der Fits, Jack Quarmby, Shaun Whittaker and Ducati Morrell-Hopa with Gareth Palmer adding 3 conversions. The A.C. Palmer & Sons-sponsored Wanderers team will finish the round robin games on Saturday, hosting Valley Stags with both teams fighting to make the semi-finals next week. Kick off at Centennial Park, Brightwater at 1.15pm.

Marist to meet Kahurangi in final Jonty Dine Reporter

jonty@nelsonweekly.co.nz jonty@nelsonweekly.co.nz

Kahurangi and Marist will square off in the Tasman Trophy final this weekend after both booked their berths with comfortable semi-final victories on Saturday. The uncanny run of close finishes between Marist and Waimea ended as the defending champions saw off their rivals 38-17 at Trafalgar Park. Marist was without inspirational captain Jacob Norris who was called up for Māori All Blacks duty. So, fellow Mako, Taina FoxMatamua, took over the skipper’s duties. Taina says, after so many recent meetings being decided by just a few points, it was satisfying to finally put their nemesis away in convincing fashion. “I think we owed them one of those. We know what they bring and we were just grateful to get the win, and not a close one this time.” The powerful number eight is excited about the showdown with Kahurangi next week as Marist chase a three-peat of titles. Marist was striped in a custom jersey made to acknowledge its Pasifika community and Taina says they were given out in a special presentation on Friday night. “We are glad we could do the jer-

New recycling calendar

Register your dogs now

Ashes issue prompts reminder

The new recycling calendar for the 2021/2022 year is out now. You can take a copy out of our latest Newsline or download one from our website, tasman.govt.nz.

Register your dogs by 31 July 2021 to avoid penalty fees. In Tasman, it only costs $50 to register an urban dog or $30 for a rural dog. You can register your dog online, in person or by mail.

Our waste contractor is concerned about increasing numbers of incidents of vacuum cleaner dust and ashes from fireplaces being dumped in recycling bins around Tasman.

If any of your details have changed, such as your address or the number of dogs you own, you also need to let us know.

Dumping dust and ashes into yellow top wheelie bins is bad for the recycling process because it contaminates loads and can affect the health of drivers as they are getting a mouth full of dust when they empty the bins.

Our Creative Communities Scheme has funding available to help groups and individuals running arts projects in Tasman. Creative Communities provides funding to support community involvement in the arts – whether it’s music, theatre, festivals, mural painting, outdoor sculptures, art in public spaces, kapa haka, singing, art workshops or something else. Funded by Creative New Zealand, the Creative Communities Scheme is designed to support opportunities for communities to participate in the arts. There is a focus on art projects that have a broad community involvement, involve young people or support the diverse arts and cultural traditions of local communities. Applications are open until Saturday 10 July 2021. For more information and to complete an application form, visit tasman.govt.nz/creative-communities.

Visit tasman.govt.nz/dog-registration.

The other problem is that if ashes are still warm, they can cause fires in bins, or even worse, in the trucks. Please think about the health and safety of our drivers and keep ashes out of your recycling.

Ngaio Reserve opening

Celebrate Matariki

Māpua’s newest park is officially opening, and you are invited. Ngaio Reserve will be officially opened with a public ceremony at 10.00 am on Sunday 18 July.

This year a dawn celebration will be held at Te Uma Urupā on Saturday 3 July. A fifty-seater coach has been organised to transport people from Te Āwhina Marae to Te Uma where there will be taonga pūoro / traditional musical instruments, karanga / welcome call, karakia / blessing ceremony, pūrākau / stories, parakuihi / breakfast and, of course, time for plenty of tātai whetū / star gazing. Space is limited, so please register by emailing juanita.semmens@ngatirarua.iwi.nz.

Three years ago, a group of community members got together with us to form the Māpua Waterfront Masterplan Working Group and one of their key projects was to progress the development of Ngaio Reserve. Due to its significant archaeological status, the park has been crafted with a sympathetic approach to its cultural history, so as little digging as possible has been done on the site. The primary objective has been to build on top of the land rather than disturb it with earthworks. The final phase of the Ngaio Park project is the installation of tables, seats and bike racks all made from recycled timber to fit in with the natural landscape of the wharf precinct. This will be followed by plantings of coastal native plants.

Community plantings Join the Battle for the Banded Rail community planting efforts. • Sunday 4 July, 9.00 am – 1.00 pm, Hoddy Peninsula DOC Reserve. Access from 57 Hoddy Road, park on the roadside edge. • Sunday 11 July, 9.00 am – 1.00 pm, Maisey Embayment. Parking and access from 364 The Coastal Highway, between Pūkeko Lane and Westdale Road. Please take gloves, a spade if you have one and drinking water. Wear solid footwear and clothes suitable for the weather conditions. Morning tea is provided. For more information, email bandedrail@gmail.com or phone Kathryn on 03 544 4537.

Free car seat checks extended to 31 July Bring your child's car seat in to Baby On The Move Nelson for a free safety check. Bookings are essential – call 03 547 2555, email nelson@babyonthemove.co.nz or message Baby On The Move – Nelson on Facebook.

All interested members of the public are invited to discuss river management issues and works. Topics will include flood protection, riparian maintenance and erosion control which may be significant to the area you live. • Waimea Catchment: Monday 5 July, 10.00 am, Richmond Council Chambers. • Upper Motueka Catchment: Tuesday 6 July, 3.00 pm, Tapawera Community Rooms. • Dove River: Tuesday 6 July, 7.00 pm, Dovedale Hall. • Lower Motueka Catchment: Wednesday 7 July, 4.00 pm, Motueka Service Centre. Richmond shines for Matariki Central Richmond is also joining the Matariki celebrations. Queen Street is being adorned with strings of sparkling stars lighting up above the roadway, and Washbourn Gardens will be lit up with lights too. These will be switched on during the hours of darkness throughout July.

The auction closes at 12.00 pm, Friday 9 July.

On June 21 2021 the world lost the most amazing man. Loved husband of Paula, proud Dad to Jade and Danielle, an amazing stepdad to Anya, treasured son of John and Dawn, valued son-in-law to Graeme, Jill and Robert, loved brother of Helen and Thane, awesome brother-in-law to Shane, Jason (#2) and Colleen, fun uncle to Kyra, Imogen, Tatum, Oscar, Hayley, Owen and Chloe, great uncle to Ruby-Rose and Henry, and of course fur dad to Kernow his loyal pampered pooch. If you were family or a friend you were treated with love, generosity and the adventures of a lifetime. Already missed by all. Family wish to thank the amazing team of staff at Nelson Tasman Hospice, Lesa Gareh Occupational Therapist and the Wakefield District Nurses. In lieu of flowers please raise your glass high to the man who made things happen. Messages can be sent C/o: PO Box 7103, Nelson, 7042. As per Jason’s wishes a small private family memorial service took place earlier last week.
