Boats lost after heavy wind
Two boats were hit so hard by a wind in Nelson last week that they were blown from their moorings. One boat owner says his 3.4 metre smartwave dinghy is “probably on its way to Fairwell Spit”. While authorities are on the hunt for the owner of another boat that washed up near Nelson Airport. Nelson harbour master Dave Duncan says that he received a call from the owner of the dinghy on Monday to say it was missing after it was blown free from its mooring.
It had a 15 horsepower motor on the back and Dave says they can’t do much “unless it washes up somewhere”. The second boat was moored near Monaco when it broke free and washed up on the southern tip of Nelson Airport. Dave says they are on the hunt for the owner so he can move it. “If it had been a danger to navigation I would have removed it immediately but it’s sitting quite high on the bank.” He says boat owners need to make sure their ropes and chains are checked regular-

and shore by dinghy. However, if mooring lines are not checked and replaced, mooring blocks are neglected and the chain and anchor not monitored, the vessel can break away or drift ashore with disastrous results. If the vessel then hits other vessels there can be even more costs.” Dave says if the owner doesn’t come forward within 30 days, the boat will be classified as an abandoned wreck and it will be sold to cover the costs of salvaging it. To get in touch with Dave about the boat email harbourmaster@portnelson.co.nz.

Nelson Volunteer Coastguard members say they’re “completely blown away” by a donation that could see it raise $20,000 over the next year. Nelson Weekly and its sister paper Waimea Weekly have donated a 20 foot Red Wing trailer sailor that was owned by the publishers of the papers, Steve Page and Jenny Bates. The yacht was bought for around $7000 but fully restored is worth
about $15,000. Coastguard volunteers will spend the next year restoring the yacht and will be calling on the local community and businesses to help in any way they can. Over that time, they will also sell raffle tickets for the yacht at $10 per ticket and next spring it will find a winner. Nelson Coastguard presidentelect Graeme Richards says it was looking for a fundraising project and one that would also raise its profile in the community. The

idea of restoring a yacht and raffling it off was “just perfect”. “It’s amazing, it blew us away really. It’s pretty apt for a coastguard unit to get a yacht to do up and then raffle off. This will give us something really worthwhile to get our teeth stuck into and it will really make a big difference.” The boat and its trailer are already in good condition but it does need some attention, including a paint job and some extras, like an outboard motor. It sleeps four people and has complete rigging including sails. Graeme says they’ve already been speaking with some local businesses about helping out but are keen to hear from any others that may
want to support the coastguard with the project. “We’ve got some clever people in the coastguard who can do a lot, but we will be looking to the community for extra support.” He says the money raised will go towards a “whole heap” of things, including a new pontoon outside the rescue centre, and upgrades. Steve Page says he is rapt the yacht will be put to good use. “We had the yacht and it was sitting there not doing anything, so I thought this would be great way for our local papers to support our local coastguard. So many Nelsonians use the water every weekend and we want to help keep them safe.” To help with the project, contact Graeme at pestcontrol.nelson@ gmail.com

A Nelson IT company is on the verge of “greatly improving” the fishing industry, with a fixed camera that captures a 360 degree view of an entire fishing boat. Those behind the technology say it will replace the need for an on-board observer, allow companies to improve their business and provide proof they are fishing in an environmentally sustainable way. The cameras are part of a joint project between Trident Systems and the Ministry of Fisheries, which is being led by Nelson-based Colin Williams. The aim of the project is to use technology to better monitor what happens on fishing boats. That led to Nelson’s SnapIT getting involved and they’ve created a camera called FishEye, which has been trialled for the past 18 months on boats from Timaru, Auckland and Fiji. The research and development phase is almost over and SnapIT’s chief executive Chris Rodley says the cameras will be ready for the market at the start of next year. Colin, who is a contractor to Trident Systems – a coopera-

Photo: Andrew Board. tive funded by 14 commercial fishing companies – says it’s the most exciting development the fishing industry has seen in years. “It’s massive, it’s a giant step for the industry. With this technology we can get ultimate sustainability, well-managed fisheries and well-behaved people. It’s truly collaborative between the industry and the government.” Colin has 25 years’ experience in the fishing industry and says its been his job to be the link between those running the fishing boats and Chris and his team, the “tech geeks”. “Because I work from the same office as the SnapIT guys, we have a great collaborative approach and way of solving problems and making the
product better.” Chris says the project has consumed his company. While they already had the technology to shoot the footage needed, they’ve completely redesigned the camera to make it smaller, lighter and cheaper, and they are now working on ways to trawl through the “tonnes” of data the cameras collect. “We’ve taken on three new designers and have had great support from the Nelson EDA and the government for grants.” The innovation has also led to Snapit HD being named a finalist in this year’s New Zealand Innovator Awards. Food companies win big Monique Bergman
Nelson featured strongly in this year’s New Zealand Food Awards, winning three of the major awards. Sealord took out the top spot, with the seafood giant’s Hot Manuka Smoked Salmon winning the Supreme Award. The other winners were Chia Limited, winning the Massey University Healthy Award for their Chia Drink and Tasman Bay Food Group, winning the Frozen Award for their Juicies product. Chia Limited is owned by father and daughter team Ben and Chloe Van Dyke and has been up and running for nearly two years. It produces around 15,000 drinks per month for the New Zealand market.
Chia’s Chloe and Flossie Van Dyke with Massey University’s Professor Paul McDonald, after winning the Massey University Healthy Award at the New Zealand Food Awards. “We have been working really hard to create healthy options, so to receive an acknowledgement like this from the New Zealand Food Awards is really nice,” says Chloe.
“It is very important to source locally grown products when we can and we use Nelson grown blackcurrents and apples. We are hoping to use locally-grown Chia seeds in the future.” Tasman Bay Food Group was placed as a finalist in three awards categories for the development of their Juicies Tubes range. Tasman Bay Food Group executive director Marina Hirst-Tristram says it is a great achievement for her company and the team behind it. “It’s great recognition of all the work that has gone into developing this unique and healthy product.” The awards were held in Auckland last Thursday night and are sponsored by Massey University.

ROCKQUEST: Garin College band ELAE couldn’t continue Nelson’s incredible success at the Smokefreerockquest on Saturday night. The winner of the Nelson heats represented the region in Auckland on Saturday night as one of six finalists. It couldn’t overcome a four-piece Wellington band HeadChef though. Nelson bands have won the national competition in two of the past four years. Judge Jeff Newton said the overall standard of the six bands was so high he’d have been comfortable with any of them winning. TOP CAFE: Nelson’s Robert Harris Café has won the “most improved” award at its Franchise Awards. Sonya and Rodney Holdaway, owners of the Robert Harris Cafe located in Trafalgar St, received the award over 44 other cafes in the Robert Harris Café network. WHY NOT CYCLE PAST ROADWORKS? While the major reseal project on Waimea Rd has led to inevitable traffic delays, councillor Matt Lawrey is encouraging people to ride their bikes along the Railway Reserve, instead to sitting in traffic. “It’s a wonderfully cruisey way to get between Stoke and town. You get to enjoy the fresh air and the views and get a bit of exercise in the process. It’s surprisingly fast and when you get to your destination you don’t need to worry about finding a park.” The Waimea Rd reseal project is on track to be completed by mid-October.

Construction starts on pest-proof fence After a decade of ground work, supporters of the Brook Waimarama Sanctuary gathered to celebrate the first steps in the construction of a pest-proof fence. It’s been 13 years since the first meeting in October 2001, when the idea of a sanctuary for valuable and threatened native species was first conceived. Last Saturday’s ceremony included a dawn blessing, and was followed by the first ground breaking and local school children installing the first fence post. “There has been so much work to get us to this stage, from our

own amazing volunteers who have put in thousands of hours of trapping, monitoring, track cutting and weeding, from the many financial supporters, large and small who have helped us reach the target of $4.7million, and for all those who have helped in many other ways,” says chairman of the Brook Waimarama Sanctuary, Dave Butler. “This event marks the vision becoming a reality – Nelson is to have a wildlife sanctuary and visitor attraction
on its doorstep, it’s a very exciting moment as we see fence construction begin.” The actual earthworks for the fence will be starting in two weeks, with construction expected to last around 18 months. Once completed, the 700ha fenced sanctuary will not only provide a safe environment for threatened species like the Kiwi and Tuatuara but supporters believe its benefits to the region will include it being a pristine native bush experience for visitors, research centre and outdoor classroom to connect people with nature.

Students ready to race hand-built karts

Held over the weekend, the show included growers from the Nelson area as well as further afield and attracted several members of the public too. Photo: Jessie Johnston.
After spending a year planning, designing and lovingly building their karts, dozens of high school and polytec students will go head-to-head in a race to see whose is the fastest. Last year was the first Top of the South Grass Kart Racing Challenge and it was such a success that 20 karts have entered this year, up from 12 last year. The challenge is being held at Tapawera Area School on October 24. The event is sponsored and co-organised by NMIT and is a local extension
of the South Island Grass Kart Racing event being held in Gore later this year. Students work in teams of four and the karts are built over the course of the year, to a set of specifications which allow for a range of variations to gearing and steering geometry. Students are encouraged to experiment with the elements of their karts and then test them out against their peers’ versions. Students can also gain NCEA credits. The 20 teams taking part are made up of students from Nel-
son College, Waimea College, NMIT, Tapawera Area School, Motueka High School and Golden Bay Area School. Events on the day will include time-trialling, slalom, sprints, teams racing and match racing. The course will be set out much like a Formula One track, but smaller and on grass. The course will be complete with a hairpin, a long back straight and a pit area. Each kart has a pit crew responsible for repairs and adjustments – just like in other motor sport.

Kahurangi National Park Rat and Possum Control Operation The Department of Conservation (DOC), as part of its Battle for our Birds programme, intends to apply cereal pellet baits containing sodium fluoroacetate (1080) in Kahurangi National Park. The pest control is being undertaken to protect native species from rats and possums.
Description of the area
Approximately 270,000 ha Kahurangi National Park and other public conservation land between the Owen Valley in the south to Parapara Peak/Kahurangi Point in the north. The operation extends from western boundary at the coastline north from Kohaihai to the Wangapeka River boundary /Mt Arthur Range in the east. Major areas include (but not limited to): Heaphy Track; Wangapeka Track; Mt Owen; Cobb Valley and part of the Mt Arthur Tablelands.
Method of control
Cereal baits containing the pesticide 1080 will be distributed by helicopter over the above area. The 1080 baits are cylindrical pellets approximately 2-3 cm long, cinnamon-lured and dyed green. The 1080 operation will be preceded by an application of non-toxic prefeed baits. The non-toxic prefeed baits are 2 cm long and not dyed. All public walking tracks within the area will be closed during and immediately following the 1080 operation until a track inspection is completed. Warning signs will be placed at all normal points of entry to the area and at huts within the area immediately prior to the 1080 operation.

Bikers raise cash for rescue helicopter The Nelson Marlborough Rescue Helicopter received a great turn out of motorcyclists for Saturday’s charity ride. Organised by the Top of the South Motorcycle Club, their route took them out through the Motueka Valley with a lunch stop in Tapawera, finishing up back in Nelson. With 112 registrations and around 90 motorcycles there on the day, the charity ride managed to make just over $2000 for the rescue helicopter. Organiser Graeme Towns says they’ll be there again next year and would like to thank all the motorcycle clubs and groups that supported the day.

Judges mark top science students Jessie Johnston
There were no flaming Bunsen burners or volatile chemicals at this year’s Cawthron Science and Technology Fair, just a hall full of school kids passionate about their projects. The Science and Technology Fair has been an established event on the school calendar in the region for almost 30 years, aimed at promoting science as a career and inspiring the next generation. In 2011, the Cawthron Institute
took over hosting and organising the event, which up until then had been managed by a group of dedicated science teachers. Stoke Memorial Hall accommodated 75 projects from students aged 13 to 18 and featured a diverse range of topics. Students were marked by more than 60 teaching and science professionals on presentation skills, interview responses and general understanding, as well as reporting on the experiment or research they had performed.

NCC funding, Tuesday, September 9: This year the Nelson City Council received more than 70 applications for funding worth more than $370,000, for available funds of approximately $150,000. The council has allocated its contract funding and one-off grants, the recipients of which are not-for-profit organisations that provide services to Nelson across a variety of sectors. There were 29 contracts and 21 one-off grants funded, totalling $144,792.98.
Cawthron sponsors the two $600 prizes for overall best science and best technology investigation, while a further 20 special category awards are given out thanks to sponsors like the Royal Aeronautical Society. If the supreme winners are of an elite standard they then have the chance to take their projects to the national stage, and even travel overseas, but results won’t be announced until a special awards event at Elim Church on October 22.

The $500 sign was installed to catch the eye of walkers on the Maitai pathway and is greatly needed by the group with all the traffic the walkway is getting. The club cannot afford to have another sign made so would be grateful to get it back.

Bars get caught in police sting A Nelson bar is facing temporary closure, after some of its patrons were caught fighting and throwing bottles and glass onto Bridge St earlier this month. Nelson police say the behaviour in Odyssey Bar on September 4 was at the “more serious end” of offending and that would be reflected in the length of suspension it will be seeking. “I would expect a bar manager to intervene and call police in a situation like this,” says sergeant Steve Savage. “Bar managers are required to be actively monitoring the behaviour of their patrons.” The incident coincided with a month-

The Nelson Young Professionals’ “Casino Royale” themed ball is fast approaching, and the NYP committee members are busy liaising with the ball sponsors to make sure the evening is a great event. NYP president Michelle Byczkow says there will be over $2000 worth of spot prizes to be won on the night, courtesy of Cheryl Mackie Boutique and Nelson Tailors Menswear. “And Jens Hansen is offering everyone who buys their ticket before October 3 the chance to wear one of five pieces of Jens Hansen jewellery for the night. We’ve never had such a big prize pool before so it’s great that the local businesses have come out to support us for this event.” Michelle says that the ball is a great opportunity for Nelson’s young professionals to get dressed up and enjoy themselves. “Though we have a lot of events on throughout the year that encourage networking and upskilling, the ball is really all about just allowing people to let their hair down and have a bit of fun.” Last year’s ball had a fantastic turnout and this year it promises to be an even bigger occasion. There are only 140 tickets available and already they are selling fast. All food, drink and entertainment are included in the ticket price. NYP members are those who are in the first 15 years of their career and who work, live or do business in the Nelson/Tasman region. The Jens Hansen NYP Casino Royale Ball is on October 11 at the Nelson Yacht Club, from 7.30pm. Dress for a night at the casino and come as James Bond, a bond girl or your preferred villain. Tickets are only $70 for non-members or $59 for members, and can be bought at www. nyp.co.nz/ball.
long sting by police, council licensing inspectors and the public health, on various licensed premises. Steve says it was disappointing to see two premises sell alcohol to a 16 year old, and other bars not supply food to patrons as part of their license conditions. Thirty-four premises were checked across the Nelson-Tasman region, with Liquid Bar and the Atawhai Four Square both being referred to the Alcohol Regulatory and Licensing Authority for suspension action as a result. Fifteen premises were checked to see if they were selling food while serving alcohol, three were found to have

Steve says lax staff practices seemed to be behind the issue, with some of the premises having food in a fridge or freezer, but staff failing to make it available to patrons. Whilst most premises were operating to a good standard, he said it was disappointing to be continually finding premises that were failing to meet the conditions of their licence. “It has been a long time since we have had 100 percent compliance and that is what we are aiming for.”

French woman wins Gigatown trip to Nelson A woman from northern France helped get the Gigatown Nelson effort across the line and into the finals. Marie Justin won the latest social media competition meant to drum up international support for Gigatown Nelson. More than 1000 entries were received from 41 different countries. The prize included $4000 toward air travel, $1000 spending money, campervan rental, an Interislander ferry pass,
accommodation, and activity passes to places like the Abel Tasman National Park. Marie says she can’t wait to visit Nelson next March with her brother. “I’m a huge fan of New Zealand thanks to the Lord of the Rings and the Hobbit – going there is a dream come true.” Marie won by signing up and choosing to support Nelson. She then completed the online quiz and was in to win the
grand prize. Glenda Buschl of the Gigatown Nelson campaign team says she can’t believe how many people across the globe have become supporters of Nelson’s social media effort. The Gigatown Nelson team is currently working on another set of exciting prizes for some more competitions to attract even more supporters, which adds to the overall score.

Stoke Toy Library turns 30

Stoke’s toy library has been the scene of thousands of happy children over its 30 year history President of the Stoke Toy Library, Donna Gray, with her son Alexander, 4, at the toy li- but its president, Donna Gray, says it’s seen plenty of tantrums as well. brary, which is turning 30 years old this year. Photo: Andrew Board. “Often they want to take the whole library with them and it has led to a few tantrums,” she jokes. The Stoke Toy Library was opened in 1984 next to the Marsden Rec cricket ground. It currently has around 100 families that are signed up as members and Donna says it’s a great way to keep new toys in the home without it costing the earth. “It means you don’t have to buy a whole lot of toys for your kids, because they get bored with them after a fortnight and then what do you do with a whole pile of toys? Well, here you can bring them back, get another lot.” The Stoke toy library is one of four in the top of the south, with others in Nelson city, Richmond and Motueka. At Stoke, families pay an annual membership fee and then a small hire fee for each item they borrow. The cost to hire ranges from 20 cents to $5 and each hire is for a fortnight. Donna says toy libraries are a world-wide movement but each runs a little different. “But each has the goal of making toys available to a community. We think it’s really cool and it’s really neat to be able to give this to the community.” The library is run by a small committee, and Donna says it is keen to find some new committee members and help keep the library running. “We do have a few members who are ready to move on so we need some new people to step up, and I hope that does happen because I’d like to see the library going for another 30 years.” Each year new toys are bought to help keep supplies current and interesting and Donna says they often aim to buy toys that are either more expensive or larger in size. “We try to buy toys that people won’t necessarily buy for their children, not things like Barbie dolls. We try and do stuff that’s a bit different, we like wooden toys and stuff like that because it’s durable, really fun and something that will drive their imagination.” While parents make up the bulk of the membership, Donna says they also have plenty of grandparents who sign up for a special package that allows them five visits a year, which coincides with the five school holidays. The toy library is open on Saturday mornings, Tuesday nights and Thursday mornings each week. For information visit www.libratu.com/ library/stoke or email stoketoylib@gmail.com

Solar Rowan Dron and the team are passionate about harnessing energy from the sun and using it to power households. This method of operating your home is not only a viable way of saving you money, but is also much more environmentally friendly. A PV Solar System uses PV solar panels to convert sunlight into DC (Direct Current) electricity, which is then passed through an inverter creating viable AC electricity. This is then used to power the household while any excess electricity you generate can then be sold
back to the electricity companies, or if you prefer, stored for future use in an off-grid system. Because the panels are harnessing the light from the sun and not the heat, power can continue to be generated in light cloud. Rowan Dron Electrical has been behind the installation of many solar systems throughout the region and has seen many satisfied customers enjoying the benefits of a more sustainable home. The cost of a PV Solar System depends on the number of panels you need and the complexity of the installation, but Rowan and the team will happily provide a no-obligation free onsite assessment and a free quotation if the system is right for your home. The entire team are Certified Electricians as well as being qualified solar installers who can advise you on the best way to maximise your savings from the system. SmartVent For a warmer, drier and healthier home, Rowan Dron Electrical can offer you a home ventilation system from SmartVent. The system quietly ventilates your home with fresher, drier air and removes condensation and moisture which will end up causing damage to paint and wallpaper, rot walls and harm soft furnishings. Mould and mildew also lead to airborne allergens

Gardens of the World hosts remembrance day Hope Garden of Remembrance and Crematorium gave friends and family the chance to remember and celebrate the lives of their loved ones through a dedicated memorial day. The gardens were created as a final resting place for family's loved ones and, whether they were interred there or elsewhere, people came last Sunday to light a candle in the me-
morial room and stroll around the garden, remembering and reflecting on the lives of their friends or loved family members. Members from the Richmond Waimea Returned Services Association were also present for the laying of a wreath and sounding of the last post. It’s the first time owners Francis and Paddy Day have held

the service in the gardens as they have only occupied the premises for a year and a half, although an annual memorial service was previously held at Marsden House. They hope the day will become an annual event where people can come and enjoy the beauty and tranquillity of the gardens, and celebrate the lives of those they have lost.

Lieutenant Stanley Berryman was a self-employed farmer, the son of Henry Giles Berryman and Mary Redman Berryman, of Stanley Downs, Kohatu, Nelson. Born at Waimate, Canterbury, New Zealand. He enlisted as a Sergeant in August 1914. The Auckland War Memorial Museum Cenotaph database has two embarkation dates and locations. The first on 16 October 1914 from Lyttelton, Canterbury, with the Canterbury Mounted Rifles as part of the Main Body. The second on 31 May 1917 with the 26th Reinforcements, Mounted Rifles from Wellington. Berryman was wounded twice at Gallipoli. On the second occasion he was invalided home in August 1916 which accounts for the second embarkation record. He was killed in action in Palestine on 30 March 1918 and is buried in the Damascus Commonwealth War Cemetery, Syria. He is remembered on the War Memorial in Ashburton, New Zealand.

Paddy’s Knob The Day family arrived in Nelson in 1845 and lived in a tent home in the Basin, in the curve of what is now Rocks Rd. Mary Day took in washing, often from Washington Valley, climbing
over the hill. In 1856, two year old Paddy followed his mother, but lost his way. It was two days before his brothers found him asleep in the scrub near Stansell Avenue and the name Paddy’s Knob was born.

Chilly conditions don't put off sea swimmers
A cool southerly and fresh snow on the mountains put the chill into the Blue September charity sea swim that raised funds for the Prostate Cancer Foundation held in Port Nelson on Sunday. Fifty-three swimmers braved the 13 degree Celsius water to compete in the 600 metres swim, with some swimmers showing more courage than others by not wearing a wetsuit. Hayden Squance won the race in 5 minutes 52 seconds, just ahead of a chasing pack that included Matt Hansen, Simon Kneebone and Richard Ussher. Kerry Mathieson was the fastest woman, finishing in 6 minutes 37 seconds. The Port Nelson Summer Sea Swim series starts on November 6. Swims are held each Thursday night at 6.15pm from the Nelson Yacht Club ramp on Wakefield Quay.

Nelson team wins Spring Challenge Nelson athletes dominated a wet Spring Challenge adventure race in Hokitika with Seagate's Susie Wood, Sophie Hart and Fleur Pawsey winning the nine hour section and Team Topzone and the Three Amigos winning their respective nine and six hour veteran's titles. Seagate completely dominated the nine hour section of the all-women teams race, that started with a short run to the rafting section through the Hokitika Gorge. That was followed by a series of mountainbiking and trekking stages, and ended with a canoe trip across Lake Kaniere and a mountainbke ride to the finish. Seagate led from the start to win in a super-fast nine hours 38 minutes, just over an hour faster than second-placed Team El Rancho and thirdplaced Team Pure Blonde. Team R and R Sports with Nelson's Ingrid Rich-
ter and Eloise Fry was fourth while veteran winners Topzone's Penny-Sue Franklin, Vicki Shelling and Jo Harris were sixth overall in 11 hour 26 minutes and 50 seconds. The Three Amigos, Pam Morris, Jackie MacIntyre and Marjolein Edwards, won the veteran six hour race in 5 hour 21 minutes and 2 seconds, finishing second behind open winners Team Up and Off. Although the weather was abysmal, race coorganiser Jodie Fa'avae says it didn't stop the competitors having a blast. "It should have been called the Mud Challenge not the Spring Challenge, but all the girls embraced the weather and had a good time," Jodie says. Three hundred and fifty-six teams and 1068 women competed in this year's Spring Challenge.

The school holidays have arrived and, hopefully, so has some nice weather. Although, having said that, the wind looks like it will play a part over the next two weeks as is typical for this time of year. Wednesday looks the best day to get out and get a feed for the family. Scallops are in great condition around the Top of the South and in good numbers. Also, don’t forget the blue cod ban on the inner sounds is now in force, so please make sure you are familiar with the banned area and the rules about travelling through this zone with blue cod. Around the D’urville area there has been some great fishing, including schools of big snapper up to 70 - 80cm and some solid kingfish. Slow jigs are working well around this area and in depths of around 50-110m. The best technique for slow jigging is a very slow wind, and lighter braids (15lb or less) and leaders (15-20lb) have been more effective than the heavier kit. With light leaders, ensure you try to set that hook early and in the mouth to avoid being bitten off. Micro jigs are proving effective, a lift and freefall technique is best. With the arrival of spring, snapper are starting to move south and in closer to shore, the best action is
around the 25-30m mark. Kayakers are starting to get some school fish which is a good indication that spring is on its way. The Dawnbreakers Fishing Club season starts on October 1 and now is the time to join the club. Every month we will have a club night or afternoon at the Tasman Bay Cruising Club, where we will usually have a guest speaker along with our monthly awards. Fish of the month, average weight species of the month, junior fisher persons of the month, and The Bugger Award. We will also run a meat raffle. So make sure you attend as these are a great night to catch up and at the least a way to find out where the fish are biting. As a club we welcome any new members wishing to learn, share and enjoy the Kiwi passion of fishing. Feel free to come along to that first Social Day on Saturday, October 11 at the Tasman Bay Cruising Club from 5pm, where we will have a guest speaker from MAF and our own speaker explaining how the club works. Membership forms are available online at our club website: www.sportsground.co.nz/dawnbreakersfishingclub Emails can be sent to: dawnbreakersfc@gmail.com or contact me after-hours on 027 445 4603.

Talented cousins represent NZ
Falcons ready for top season The Nelson Marlborough Falcons are on track to match their heroics of last season, says coach Mark Johnston, with a squad full of depth and talent. The Falcons – who play in the ASB Youth Football League – had their final hit-out of the preseason over the weekend, beating Canterbury United 4-3 in Blenheim, and Mark says he’s got some tough decisions to make ahead of the season opener this Sunday. “Our strength this year will be our depth. We have depth in every position, which is great.” Last year, the Falcons won the southern conference before losing to Auckland City in the national final. This year, the league is structured differently, meaning the Falcons will play every team in the country once. Mark says that will bring more challenges but he’s confident they can again make the top two. “We’re looking as good, if not better, than the same time last year, so it should be a good season.” The squad will feature two over-age players, goal keeper Coey Turipa and attacker Sam Ayers, while Nayland College skipper Josh Samsom will captain the side. The Falcons kick their season off against Wairarapa, at Trafalgar Park from 2pm on Sunday.
When cousins Courtney Lott and Millie Hammett represent New Zealand in Australia next week, they will be following a strong family tradition in sport. Millie, 15, is niece of former All Black hooker and Hurricanes coach, Mark Hammett, and Courtney, 14, is niece of former Warriors half back and Tasman Titans coach, Phil Bergman. Millie is a member of the Canterbury Amateur Judo Club and has been chosen in the New Zealand Judo Development Squad to train at the Australian Institute of Sport in Canberra. She will compete against judo opponents from some of the best teams in the world, Australia and Japan. Courtney, who played in the Tasman under-15 mixed touch football team last season, will represent New Zealand in the under – 15 mixed team in the TransTasman tournament on Australia’s Gold Coast. Not only cousins, they are training bud-

Millie’s family moved to Nelson this year and she is finishing off her year 11 studies at Villa Maria College in Christchurch, before moving to a Nelson school next year. The girls have always been close despite living in different cities, their bond has strengthened even more now that they
both reside in Nelson. “Catching up was limited to the school holidays but now we see each other regularly which is great,” Courtney says. They meet every weekend in Nelson to put in some extra training sessions leading up to their respective tournaments. “Being cousins we can push each other to our limits,” Millie says. “We encourage each other to go that little bit further. Due to her judo training Millie is a little bit stronger than I am, so I am striving to do better,” Courtney says. In Australia, both girls are looking to develop skills, gain more experience and compete well. Training together will continue after their competitions in Australia. “I am aiming to make the New Zealand judo squad for the Oceania Championships in New Caledonia next year,” Millie says. One thing is for certain, they will never be short of family support.
