Jon joined amalgamation proponent and representative for electors Aldo Miccio in Richmond over the weekend, saying what the benefits of amalgamation would mean to businesses in the region. During the submission process, dozens of businesses or business people submitted in favour of a council merger. Aldo says businesses see the benefits but they don’t stop there. “This Local Government Commission process has proven that there will be costs
savings, efficiencies, and better community representation,” he says. “It makes sense – one mayor, one CEO, one senior management team and a better diversity of quality councillors to provide one strategic vision for the whole region.” In July last year the commission released a draft proposal of a reorganisation of the councils, saying the region’s had “missed opportunities” by not

Little Toot turns heads The latest boat to turn heads at the Nelson Marina isn’t a massive super yacht or an impressive fishing vessel – it’s a 11 foot “toy tug”. Nelson man Clint Skelton has spent the past 12 years working on the super yacht Adix and while it was docked in Valencia, Spain, built the tug with some of his fellow crew, including another Nelson man, Haden McCrorie. This month, Clint moved back to Nelson and brought his tug, named Little Toot, with him. The tug has a top speed of six knots (or 11km) and was named after the children’s book of the same name. Clint says he built the boat because Valencia in the winter could be pretty boring after work and he had some parts to use. “I had a three cylinder motor that was just going

Victory for swim teachers NEWS IN BRIEF Andrew Board
Organisers of a community swim programme are claiming a minor victory, helping scores of local kids improve their swimming skills as national figures show an alarming number of Kiwis drowning this summer. And they are now aiming to emulate the programme next year. This summer 15 people have drowned in New Zealand waters, a shocking statistic says learn to swim teachers. But the joke was on them, when harbour master Dave Duncan saw the pair on one of the cameras which are fixed to all of the beacons in the haven. “All beacons are on camera in the port, it wasn’t hard to find them and the evidence is irrefutable. It is up to $500 in fines, so I recommend others don’t do it,” says Dave. KAi fEST AT WhAKATU: Kai Fest will be held for the fourth year this Waitangi Day, Monday 6 February, with Founders Heritage Park and Whakatū Marae working closely together to present a range of traditional and international flavours cooked by the wider Nelson community. There will be many great features at this year’s event including the two Pōwhiri at 11.00am and 1.00pm, where everyone visiting or living in Nelson is invited to a ceremonial welcome onto our local Marae. A wide variety of international food made by families living in our Nelson communities will be on offer. All stalls will offer small portions of food priced at $2.50 or $5 to encourage visitors to try a wide range. This year we have confirmed local performers at the two stages at Whakatū Marae and Founders Heritage Park, headlining Nelson’s own Kapa haka Group, Taiko Drummers, Alegria Beat and Tongan Song and Dance. Traditional arts and crafts will also be on display.

Nelson visitors up, rest down Nelson is bucking a national trend according to the latest accommodation figures, seeing an increase in visitors while the rest of the country lags behind the previous year. Nelson Tasman Tourism head Lynda Keene says the recent release by Statistics New Zealand with regional and national results for the commercial accommodation sector shows the Nelson Tasman region has experienced eight months of consecutive growth with visitor arrivals. New autumn and winter marketing activities, new conference business, new market segment development promotion with cycle tourism and culinary tourism, increased conference business, good quality events, some Crusaders rugby games, the Rugby World Cup 2011, the South Island Masters Games in October and primarily changes in visitor trends from the Christchurch earthquakes were the main factors she says.

Back to school for students Thousands of students in the Nelson region are enjoying their final day of school holidays today, with the majority of schools reopening tomorrow, some bigger than ever. Most primary and secondary schools are open today for teachers only, with students being welcomed back on Wednesday. The first week back will see a flurry of activity on the roads, prompting police to issue a warning for motorists to be extra vigilant around schools as students settle into new routines. Many schools will be welcoming a fresh intake of new students. Rolls around the region seem
to be on the up, especially for primary schools. Clifton Terrace School has seen its role explode, with 40 more students on its role this week compared to the same time last year. Principal Rob Wemyss says the increase is partly due to families from Christchurch moving to the area, but also more movement from local families. One of Clifton Terrace's new students is five yearold Jessica Lees who says she is excited about her first year at school. She will join her big brother, Benjamin, 8, who says he's had a great holiday but looking forward to the new year.

From My Desk • Nelson Anniversary weekend would have been spent by many at our spectacular national parks with glistening golden sand beaches, turquoise crystal clear waters or perhaps walking or biking up our mountain ranges. Just a few fantastic reasons why we love our beautiful region and so many people choose to visit.

Free roof for RDA centre Local construction company Kennedy Construction, along with Nelson ITM Building Centre and Firth Industries, have all pitched in to erect a covered outdoor area for our local Whakatu Group, Riding for the Disabled. There will be no more wet mornings between the office and gear shed as the local building crew spent the last two Saturdays upgrading facilities at the centre used by 65 disabled riders every week. “We can’t express our gratitude enough
to Kennedy Construction, ITM and Firth Industries - without this level of support, improving our facilities and programs would prove far more difficult. For companies to gift their time and products, especially in this climate, is exceptional; we are very, very lucky,” says Pam Howard, spokesperson for RDA. The guys from Kennedy Construction were more than happy to lend their weight and muck in for a good cause. “We’re very pleased to be able to
support RDA and the local community with this initiative, it’s always a nice feeling, giving back. We are also wrapped to have the support of Nelson ITM Building Centre and Firth Industries, two of our largest suppliers of quality building products,” says Neil Kennedy. On a weekly basis RDA provide therapy sessions, sports recreation rides, supervised after-school riding, plus school holiday pony care programs, birthday parties and Kindergarten rides.
• My focus for this week – Amazon. Heading up the team of 8, manager Sinead and assistant manager Lydia are both local Nelson girls, who after a working stint in Auckland, moved back down to our amazing Fashion Island Amazon store, bringing back with them a vision to create a style that brought all the passion of surf and skate to the city – with energy, colour and variety. Stocking a new brand of skate gear ‘MO’BADDA’, they have full set ups and decks and accessories. Winter gear is starting to arrive, head in and see the “zon” crew and get dressed for the season.

Ivy Leagues aren’t just for rich kids in the movies according to Massey student Katherine Patterson, who is currently on exchange to the University of Cornell in New York. Katherine is an ex-Nayland College student who’s enrolled in a Bachelor of Communications at Massey’s Wellington Campus. “I have a travelling bug. I love travelling and staying three years in one place wasn’t an option for me,” she says. Cornell is part of the prestigious Ivy League system which includes Yale, Harvard and Princeton. Marketing student Katherine says that all she knew about the school before applying was that it was in New York and thought “that looked like fun”. Through a class assignment on Consumer Behaviour Katherine had the opportunity to meet with the marketing director of Vogue last month and, through that, to meet with the associate publisher of Wired magazine. Since the Fall Semester begun she has been working for Cornell’s fashion magazine Thread

and just last week, and with only one semester left of her exchange, she was appointed the coeditor in chief. While she loves every minute, Katherine admits that attending an Ivy League school isn’t always as glamorous as it may sound. “I thought an exchange was going to be like a holiday… I didn’t expect to be staying up until 4am completing assignments,” she says. Katherine describes Cornell as like “Harry Potter Land” because it just doesn’t seem real. She also describes how students pay over $50,000 in fees each year. Katherine says that she is very fortunate to have the opportunity to study under many accomplished professors. Her professors include the former editor of Harpers Bizarre and author of the acclaimed novel Lolita. She light-heartedly says that the experience has been challenging and she will probably be broke by the end of it but describes it as “once in a lifetime opportunity”. Summer fling heading to Nelson Summer Ceroc is offering dancers a chance to have a ‘Summer Fling’ with a fusion of styles being taught over Waitangi weekend. The Nelson Ceroc club, described by visiting dancers as the friendliest dance group in the country, holds the Summer Ceroc event bi-annually with Ceroc enthusiasts coming from all over New Zealand to attend alongside the clubs 200 local members. Ceroc Nelson manager Gael Thompson says people can expect some exciting dance workshops from the Jive/Tango fusion and the newest style a Ceroc/Zouk workshop that takes its inspiration from the Brazilian dance form. Ceroc (French for “its rock”) is itself is a fusion of latin, jive , jazz and swing styles. It’s a very versatile dance that can easily be danced to a Theatre group Body in Space held several free comedy performances at Fairfield Meadow last week. The four-piece comedy troupe entertained hundreds of people over one week of matinée twilight performances with their somewhat skewed, but hilarious take on ‘All the Fairy
Tales You Know (and some you don’t)’. Whether it was Hansel and Gretel done in “Google based” German or Puss in Boots portrayed in the style of French silent film or even the wolf from Red Riding Hood cast as a trench-coat clad flasher, the Body in Space crew warped
classic tales to their own offthe-cuff style. Actor Roger Sanders says they were really impressed by the turnout. “This was an original piece, and we wondered in rehearsals ‘how will people react to our interpretation of classic tales?’ But we were very pleased.”

Women’s expo set for Nelson return
The annual Women’s Lifestyle Expo returns to the Nelson Trafalgar Centre this April. This must-see event for women changes every year and the 2012 Expo will have some great new features including a new Craft Zone and an extended Taste of NZ Zone. Renee Murray, from organisers Peacock Promotions, says last year the Taste Zone was very popular so this year they have managed to add even more sites in and also include some different gourmet delights on offer. “We like to have interactive sites within the Expo and the chance to try new and different food proved to be a lot of fun last year.” The Women’s Lifestyle Expo has over one hundred local
and national companies on board this year with products ranging from skincare to Indian head massages. Plus there will be some great items on sale and lots of those famous Expo specials says Renee. “There are some fabulous companies in this region that many of us don’t know about because we simply don’t drive past that area, or have always been meaning to visit but we get sidetracked with daily life and never get there. The Expo allows you to discover these companies in one fun day. Our expo has really struck a chord with local women through our personal approach and ability to feature items not normally seen at other exhibitions.” A new exhibitor to the Expo, Shott Beverages, will be
showcased in the Taste Zone sampling and selling their award winning coffee syrups, smoothie bases and yummy cocktail mixers. Based in Wellington Shott Beverages have gained a NZ wide following and are well known for their their coffee syrups which are used in the best cafes and restaurants. They find the Expo a great place to meet thousands of women in one weekend and the personal environment allows them to easily promote their company and answer questions about their products. With a few months to go until the Expo weekend there are some sites left available. If you are interested in being involved please see www.expos.co.nz or email renee@ peacock.co.nz.
Gr wing Things
With Robyn Hollis
The first month of the year seems to have just flown past quickly and I do hope you are having better start to it than we have! They say things “happen in threes” – if this is the case we had better hope that’s right! Firstly I was pulled over the other week by a very friendly (and very young!) policeman and was told that I had not stopped at an intersection and would I be so good as to pay a $150 fine. I was very embarrassed and apologised etcetera, but the fine still had to be paid. Off home to explain to John what I had done. No worries, says he, and proceeds to tell me of his day. Going over a farm that day he took a short cut under a dairy shed tunnel and filled his boots and soaked his trousers in dairy effluent ( Cow urine!) The strange smell at the back door was enough to let me know he wasn’t joking and I still can’t have those boots in the house. A few days after that I came home to find him looking very sheepish as he told me that he had just come from the mechanics. Lots on his mind, he said, and had stopped to fill his truck and proceeded to put 14 litres of petrol into a diesel tank! A rather expensive mistake and one he will not make again I am sure. Things must get better from here on..! Back to the garden, which is a much safer place for the both of us at present. A couple of months ago I emptied out some bulbs from old pots that I wanted to throw out. I ended up with loads of mixed bulbs which have now dried off well and will be replanted in the garden in a week or two. February is the month to replant bulbs and already we are seeing anemones, ranunculus and early flowering crocus in
the shops. For the best results I suggest planting anemones and ranunculus into shallow trays of potting mix. Keep them in a cool shady place until they are well established and then carefully plant them out.

Tips
Q& A
Q: Kirsty from Tahuna wanted to know a bit about the “new” insect pest that has been attacking our tomato and potato crops for the last couple of seasons. I was given some information by the good folk at Bay Nurseries so here goes. A: The tomato/potato psyllid is from North America and was first detected in NZ in 2006. The psyllid adult and nymphs cause damage to the plants by feeding on the leaves and by transmitting a bacterial pathogen called Liberibacter, that lives in plants. On tomatoes the damage can be seen as a curling and cupping of the leaves, slight yellowing of the growing tip and fruit may be small and misshapen. On potatoes the same curling and scorching effect can be seen. The stem can be swollen and the plants collapse prematurely. When plants are dug they have not formed tubers. Control: It is thought that several insecticide sprays currently on the market may help but none have been fully tested in NZ. Confidor and Mavrick are the two suggested but would have to be used on the underside of the leaves every 7 to 14 days to kill the nymphs ( most insecticides will not kill eggs.) Strengthening the plants with Seasol and adding Neem pellets to the soil may also aid in helping the plants fight this pest. I hope this helps Kirsty but not a lot is known about the life span of these pests, it’s all a bit trial and error! Until next time – enjoy the summer!

Derrick Gould, the new manager at Greenacres Golf Club, encourages new members to sign up and enjoy all the Greenacres has to offer. Take a scenic drive around Best Island to the sweeping greens of Greenacres Golf Club. Golfers are rewarded with breathtaking views and 18 beautifully maintained holes to test or hone their skills. With the 2012 golf season about to begin, Greenacres Golf Club is holding a membership drive, excited at the prospect of encouraging new or returning golfers to their club and the skilful sport of golf. The season will officially begin with the Club Open Day being held on Saturday February 4, which welcomes anyone who wants to play, whether you’ve played golf before or not, to come along for a round and experience what the club offers for a minimal entry fee. Participants are placed in groups at one of the 18 holes and begin on a “shotgun start” at 10am, meaning that everyone tees off at once. It takes about four hours to complete the 18 holes, and there is a prize giving afterwards for anyone who performed well. There will be drinks and nibbles available in the clubhouse to enjoy as you mingle with fellow golfers. It’s a great opportunity for new players to experience the sport, or returning players to see what Greenacres Golf Club has to offer. The following Tuesday, February 7, is the Women’s Open Day. The day is run on the same formula, and while the Club Open Day welcomes anyone, men and women, the Women’s Open Day is all about giving ladies a chance to play with their
friends without so much pressure placed on competing well. The Women’s 9 Hole Open Day is on Thursday February 16, and their season begins from then. Played every Thursday, the 9 hole golf option gives women the opportunity to play and enjoy golf without having to commit to playing 18 holes each time. The rounds take less time and are less strenuous than playing all 18 holes, and it’s a great way to meet up with friends and socialise with other women in the community. The Club Open Day on February 4 signals the start of the 2012 season. Throughout the season, club members have the chance to play in tournaments at varying skill levels. The Club Championships require players to partake in a qualifying round, which separates them into groups of 16 based on ability. This allows more skilled players to engage in fair competition, while those who play at a higher handicap are competing amongst equals. This gives everyone a greater chance to win their division, as you compete with others at your level rather than the entire spectrum of skill. The Sunshine Veterans Classic is a tournament for over 55’s run on Wednesday February 8 and Thursday 9. Entries close Wednesday February 1 however, so if you’d like to play, make sure to get in quick to register. Spectators are welcome for those who want to watch the action or be there to support a loved one. Players who want to compete on a greater level

Greenacre’s resident NZPGA professional Alistair Palmer is available for coaching and one-on-one lessons at the club. have the chance to partake in interclub tournaments. Golfers compete on three 18 hole courses and six 9 hole courses within the Tasman region. More skilled players can compete in the Elite Group, known as the Tasman Cup for men and the Westrupp Cup for women. There are equivalent handicap tournaments for those who aren’t up to competing with the professionals. Greenacres has a reputation for producing skilled golfers, with four out of five of the Tasman District’s representatives in 2011 being members of the club. This is in part due to the high level of coaching available at Greenacres. One coach of note is Alistair Palmer, the resident NZPGA professional at Greenacres. Alistair is available for one-on-one lessons with club members that cover any aspect of your game, be it driving and pitching, putting and chipping, or getting your ball out of that troublesome bunker. Group lessons are also available for a lower charge, and under 19’s are
coached at half price. As of September last year the management of Greenacres was passed into the capable hands of Derrick Gould. Recently retired, Derrick was thrilled when a friend mentioned the position was available. He has played golf all his working life, both in South Africa and New Zealand, competing in tournaments himself and loving the game. “I work from 9 until 3.30 and then go play 9 holes of golf. The course is fantastic; it’s quite unique because it’s on an island.” He encourages new members to sign up and take advantage of the perks the club offers. “We’ve got such a fantastic facility but there’s always room for more members. We get maybe sixty people playing the course daily, but there’s room for twice that many.” Members can play on the course any time, store their golf clubs, and also have insurance on their clubs in case they are broken or damaged while playing. Members also get a significant discount on greens fees at Greenacres as well as many

Demo derby a smashing good time Phillip Rollo
Before
The bash, crash and smash returned for the Classic Hits Demolition Derby as forty drivers left almost everything on the clay. Saturday night’s wildest ride went to Richmond’s Andre Evans. With his car engulfed in flames he continued to speed around the Tahuna Beach Holiday Park Speedway course for at least 15 seconds before his derby hopes were extinguished. It was the 24th time Andre had entered the derby, but it was clearly the most exciting for the Jacks Tyres employee who was also competing against his boss. When he saw flames coming through the bonnet after an oil leak, he wasn’t prepared to stop. “I just wanted to go faster and keep going. But that’s when I spun out and I thought I better stop when I saw the fire-fighters come running over,” he says. It was survival of the fittest and despite this year’s prize package, given to the driver who completed ten laps first, there were only a handful of drivers left to weave their way through the wreckage. Winner, Isaac Russ, used all his speedway nous as he made the transition from production saloon to derby car. He says the $500 prize money will go towards a super saloon he is building from scratch and was clearly stoked to win. “I’m absolutely rapt, 'eh. When I was lining up at the start I thought there was no way I was going to win this. I thought there was no point trying, I may as well go out and have some fun,” he says. “But the car kept going; it didn’t even lose any water.” SMASHED: A before and after glimpse of the damage inflicted on Classic Hits DemoliIsaac had been given the car by his boss tion Derby newbie Kenny Nolan at the Tahuna Beach Holiday Park Speedway on Saturday and was planning on giving it to his night. he entered it in the derby instead. He says the secret was making sure you hit, without damaging the radiator. One driver who had entered in the Classic Hits Demolition Derby for the first time was Kenny Nolan. Kenny, along with two friends, one of which is a street stock driver, was still buzzing the morning after the race. He says his tactics for the race went out the window as soon as the green light flashed and judging by the front of his car, he got plenty of good hits in. Kenny was the first out of the trio in the infield, but says he will definitely be back next year. “I had a front on hit and it ruined me,” he says. Daniel Kitto says the start is usually the most difficult part with a watered down track. “There’s definitely a bit of an act to it. But it soon dries out you get the hang of it,” he says. Daniel drives the 78n Outlaw street stock and says there are always plenty of speedway drivers that get amongst the derby action, as well as general members of the public. The night also featured club championships for stockcars, street stocks and sidecars. Rex ‘Pumpkin’ Collier (9n) took out the stockcars with Shannon Marr (73n) claiming street stock glory. Dallas Kelman (2NZ) and Adie Drake won the sidecar event through a run off. Dale Ewers couldn’t defend his 1NZ title at the New Zealand Super Stock Championship in Huntly over the weekend. Dale and Craig Boote were the only straight qualifiers from Nelson into the final. However, both ended outside the top fifteen. Dale was the highest place finisher in 17th while Craig ended 20th. The Nelson Tigers head to Palmerston North this weekend for the New Zealand Super Stock Teams Championship.

Nelson man wins tennis crown
Nelson Bay’s tennis Veteran Steve Molnar took out the double at the 2012 Tennis Seniors NZ National Championships that took place in Tauranga over the weekend. Steve, competing in the 65 plus age group category and seeded 4th, cruised through to the final without dropping a set, knocking out second seed Graeme Thompson 6-2, 6-2 in the semi-finals. Steve then met top seed and his doubles partner David Hawkes in the final. Steve took a while to get going and dropped the first set 2-6, but then
found form and took out the remaining two sets 6-4, 6-3 and subsequently, the title. Steve and David seeded number one in the doubles, had a tight semi-final battle against Laurie Greene and Allan Dickey but pulled out a strong performance in the third set to take the match 6-3 6-7 6-3. In the final they met second seeds John Cook and Graeme Thompson and it was to be another tough three set encounter. Steve and David dropped the first set 3-6, but took full control in the next two sets winning 6-1, 6-3. Left; Sam McCreary blocks the ball during game one of the Brightwater Nelson Anniversary Open held at the Brightwater Beach Club on Monday morning. The open featured around 20 of the region’s top volleyball players with some travelling from Blenheim. This Saturday is the Kaiteriteri Twilight Tournament starting at 4pm. It will be followed by the Port Nelson Tasman Open on Monday February 6 from 9am. Search Volley Nelson Bays on Facebook for more info. Photo: Phillip Rollo.

Perched at the top of the Twenty20 ladder, a tight weekend has seen Athletic College Old Boys edge one step closer to their first final spot since returning as a club this season. A one-run loss to Wakatu and a super over victory against Waimea Toi Toi United means ACOB sit equal with Stoke/Nayland, just needing one win this weekend to secure a date at Saxton Oval in two weeks time. Both ACOB and WTTU finished with 127 runs and needing just three off their super over, Marty Kain rocketed the first ball over the
boundary. ACOB have the home field advantage this weekend, and coach Garry MacDonald says making a final in any of the three forms of the game would have been deemed a success since the club’s return. “These [next games] are basically semi finals, that’s what we’re treating it as,” he says. “The two-day campaign we were basically just getting to know each other. But we’ve got it now - well we think we have. One of my goals is that I was hoping to make the final, especially our first year in.”
Visitor boats win local regatta
Nelson boat Blackout leads the pack during the final day of racing outside Nelson Haven last week. Photo: Andrew Board. Yachts from Wellington and Picton pipped local crews to win the Nelson Regatta last week. Thirty two entries were split into two divisions for the regatta, with Mike Vining's Nefertiti winning the first division and Brent Dewhurst's Gucci winning the second division. The best of the local racers were
Robert Greenwood's crew on Wild Oats and Kevin Skelton's Oldsmobile, finishing second and third respectively in the first division. Owen Patterson's Fourth Dimension finished second in the second division. Racing was split into four days, starting with America's Cupstyle racing just on the other side of the Boulder Bank.
Day two saw the fleet race to Torrent Bay in 18 knot sea breezes. The following day was racing from Torrent Bay to Tonga Island and back before heading back to Nelson. The final day of racing emulated the first, with can races just outside Nelson Haven. This was the third time the regatta has been held.

Locals win at national mountainbike champs
Teenager Leo Sandler is Nelson's latest national champion, winning the under 19 national mountainbiking title over the weekend. Leo, in his first year in the junior U19's, won the gold and in a stunning time that placed him within the top ten Elite times at the title at the RaboDirect national championships in the Brook on Sunday. But he wasn’t the only Nelsonian tasting success at the champs. Four locals won their grade in the Super D, with Jamie Nicoll winning the master one men section; Jake Glover winning the junior men section; Harriet Harper winning the master women section and Naomi Whitehead winning the senior women section. In the downhill, Jake Boylett won the master one men section, Hayden McKay the master two men, Loui Harvey the hardtail men and Tania Carson the junior women section. The Downhill event drew a huge crowd, with a win on the Fringed Hill course considered one of the ultimate prizes in New Zealand downhill racing. Right through the lead-up age group categories, the form riders
from the early part of the NZ MTB Cup seemed to hold advantages over their chasing rivals. Two Nelson riders who hadn’t yet made NZ Cup appearances upset the form book by winning their categories – Hayden McKay in the 30-39 Master Men, and Tania Carson in the Open Women. Hayden’s win gives him back to back championship titles in this very competitive category. But it was the Elite contest that captivated the Fringed Hill crowd. Multi-time National Champion Harriet Harper (Nelson) held the fastest seeding time in this category by a mile, but had to settle for second place after a truly inspired race by Sarah Atkin, of Lower Hutt. The Mens Elite race was incredibly close. Matt Walker (Kawerau) attacked from an early start position to lead for some time before Bryn Dickerson (Wellington) unseated him from the top of the leaderboard. The Downhill National Championship win made it two titles for Dunedin's Justin Leov for the weekend, joining his Super D gold from Friday night. Leov and Sarah Atkin can now proudly call themselves national champions.
