During the submission process, dozens of businesses or business people submitted in favour of a council merger. Aldo says businesses see the benefits but they don’t stop there. “This Local Government Commission process has proven that there will be costs
savings, efficiencies, and better community representation,” he says. “It makes sense – one mayor, one CEO, one senior management team and a better diversity of quality councillors to provide one strategic vision for the whole region.” In July last year the commission released a draft proposal of a reorganisation of the councils, saying the region’s had “missed opportunities” by not

Little Toot turns heads The latest boat to turn heads at the Nelson Marina isn’t a massive super yacht or an impressive fishing vessel – it’s a 11 foot “toy tug”. Nelson man Clint Skelton has spent the past 12 years working on the super yacht Adix and while it was docked in Valencia, Spain, built the tug with some of his fellow crew, including another Nelson man, Haden McCrorie. This month, Clint moved back to Nelson and brought his tug, named Little Toot, with him. The tug has a top speed of six knots (or 11km) and was named after the children’s book of the same name. Clint says he built the boat because Valencia in the winter could be pretty boring after work and he had some parts to use. “I had a three cylinder motor that was just going
