Driving drunk to pick up kid

A Nelson driver, nearly four times over the legal limit, was stopped by police at a checkpoint while on their way to pick up a child from a rural school.

The driver returned a breath alcohol level of 973mcg. The current limit for drivers over 20 is 250mcg, with the previous limit being 400mcg.

A total of 10 drink drivers were stopped

by police over the last week and senior sergeant Grant Andrews says seven of those drivers were caught with breath alcohol levels in excess of the old limit.

Only three were detected within the new 250 to 400 mic range.

Grey Power to vote on its future Poppy donations leaves Nelson’s Grey Power membership will go to the vote tomorrow, deciding who it wants to lead the organisation into the future.

It’s already clear that former president Gordon Currie will return to his former role, after he was the only candidate. But it’s those elected onto the management committee that will be of greatest interest.

In each of the top positions – except for president – there are two candidates, one supporting the former president Neville Male and one supporting the current management committee led by Kevin Gardener.

Standing for the “progressive” group that is supportive of Neville is Malcolm Saunders for vice-president, Garry Thompson for secretary and Eileen Wilkin for treasurer.

Standing against them is Kevin Gardener for vice president, Pam Coltman for secretary and Pat Carrick for treasurer.

There are also 17 candidates for positions on the committee.

The AGM for Nelson Grey Power will be held at Annesbrook Church on Saxton Rd from 10.30am. Members must be financial to vote and people can arrive early and pay at the door if they wish.

National Grey Power federation president Terry King will address the members. He says he’ll speak on the value of Grey Power and will urge members to do their bit and vote. “The real issue from a national point of view is the way the volunteers have been treated.”

organiser ‘shocked’ Andrew Board A request for handmade poppies for a display at Nelson Cathedral has had such a remarkable response the coordinator has been left “shocked”.

Susan Holland came up with the idea to make a giant display by hanging homemade woollen or fabric poppies in the Nelson Cathedral to commemorate 100 years since the Gallipoli landings. The idea isn’t new, with other parts of New Zealand and Australia doing a similar concept. But Susan says the reaction from Nelsonians has been fantastic.

“I didn’t expect the response would be quite so much as it is. I’ve been quite shocked.”

When Susan spoke with Nelson Weekly last September, her goal was to have 1000 poppies made and donated by locals. She has well over 3000, with anoth-

er two weeks before the display goes up.

Susan is a part of the Nelson Creative Fibre Group which has led the project, but says donations have come from all around the region and with good support from the local libraries and wool shops.

“There are patterns online or people could make their own, and it really got people interested in what we do,” says Susan.

The poppies are glued to a 5 metre by one metre sheet of hessian and will hang in front of the two big windows inside the Cathedral. The display will go up on April 10.

Susan says the group just needs some galvanised poles donated to slide through the top of the display. The pipes need to be at least 1200mm long and anyone that may be able to help can contact Susan on 547 4329.

Fight 4 Victory just days away Locally Owned and Operated

For 20 local novice boxers, this week will be the longest they’ve felt for some time.

The second edition of the Fight 4 Victory corporate boxing fundraiser is this Saturday night at Saxton Stadium and the fighters say they can’t wait.

After three months of hard training, they will go face-toface for the official weigh-in on Thursday night at McCashin’s Brewery, before finally going toe-to-toe on Saturday night.

A bout between an army sergeant and a police sergeant is the main event, but organiser Paul Hampton says there will be ten great fights throughout the night.

“We’re really happy with the match-ups, everyone’s been training really hard and working really hard so it will be quite a show.”

Tickets for the event are still available but the corporate tables sold out months ago.

Paul says he’s hoping for a big crowd.

“We’re really lucky that the event is already a money maker with the number of corporate tables we sold, but it would be great to fill the stands as well and get a great atmosphere go-

Two new initiatives are about to be launched to encourage people to minimise food waste, after a survey showed that families in Nelson and Tasman were throwing out an average of 3.3kg of edible food each week.

David, whose family took part in the survey, says it was interesting looking at waste on a small scale after managing thousands of tonnes of solid waste the district produces each year. He jokes that one of the biggest challenges his family faces is “getting the kids to eat all of their school lunch.”

“Families often cook meals that are too big and then the leftovers get thrown

out. A lot of people also throw out food that’s passed its expiry date or bread that’s gone stale. But we found one of the biggest ones was school lunches. We’ve got four kids and you try to get them to eat all their lunch - it’s impossible.”

David says minimising food waste is important because it will help cut the family grocery bill as well as reducing the amount of waste going into landfills.

“It takes up space and produces methane, and we have to pay to collect it, cart it around the district and put it in the ground.”

Fire destroys Stoke couple’s home: A house fire left two retired Nelsonians with only the clothes on their backs, as their Arapiki Rd home burned to the ground on Friday.

Black smoke was seen from as far away as Motueka, Richmond and Nelson. At least four fire trucks from Nelson, Richmond and Stoke fire stations attended the fire.

Lesley and Leslie Morris were taken in by neighbours while firefighters battled the blaze.

Orca Sighting at Tahunaui: A pod of orcas were sighted at the back of Tahunanui Beach yesterday, including a mother with her calf.

Haven Rd corner gets makeover The old Seafarers’ Mission building on Haven Rd looks a bit different without it’s blue cladding, but it won’t be the only change to the Haven Rd corner that it’s called home for decades – the neighbouring Guards Sea Service shed is coming to the ground.

The mission building, now owned by Spanish photographer Jose Cano, does not yet have a definitive plan set out, with an engineering assessment still needing to take place. The possibility of a full restoration is in the air, with talk of a cafe and gallery.

Susan Heydom who lives in the cottage next door says she is very excited to see what developments happen.

The boxers aren’t the only ones volunteering to get in the Fight 4 Victory ring this Saturday – three “ring girls” will also do their bit for the cause.

Renee McConochie, Anthea Shearer and Ursula Hubbard have volunteered to carry the “ring cards” indicating what round is coming up. They were approached to do it by their friend Hazel Trethowen, who is fighting in the event.

They say they were keen to get involved to help out the cause. “Plus, I want to watch the boxing,” says Anthea.

Outfits for the ring girls have been donated by

House of Purcell in the City Centre Arcade.

Owner Zar Fa’avae says that her partner trains at the gym and was keen to support the work they do. “It’s a really cool initiative so we just wanted to help where we could.”

The three girls say they’re not too sure what to expect on the night, but they’re looking forward to it.

Fight 4 Victory organiser Paul Hampton says he’s delighted the girls have come on board. “It’s great that another part of Nelson is getting behind the cause and putting their time into the event. It’s just another piece of the puzzle now in place.”

NZ’s rarest bird could be hiding in Stoke

simon@waimeaweekly.co.nz A ball of moss isn’t the kind of thing that most people get excited about, but for Mapua ornithologist Rhys Buckingham it’s the biggest news in years.

That’s because Rhys is convinced that the distinctive moss scrapings found in bush in the Marsden Valley near Stoke are a sure sign that one of the country’s rarest birds, the South Island Kokako, is living in the area. The last verified sighting of the elusive bird was way back in 1967, but now Rhys has seen the moss scrapings he is heading a full-scale search in the Marsden Valley starting this week. “The first time I saw these moss scrapings was on Stewart Island in 1984. We’d done this extensive survey and found a site with all these scrapings, so we played a tape recording of a kokako and all hell broke loose - there were kokako calling back everywhere.

“The moss is really distinctive - there’s no mistaking it. We’ve also had reports of people seeing the kokako in the same area in the Marsden Valley too, so I’m very, very excited.’

Valley Trapping Group, Don Sullivan, and Rhys says that discovery, along with the earlier unverified sightings of the bird in the same area, was enough encouragement to organise a search.

However, Rhys says finding the notoriously elusive and shy bird, which is known as the grey ghost, won’t be easy. The South Island Kokako is grey with an orange-coloured wattle and has

an organ-like song.

“We’ll be using motion-sensor cameras and acoustic equipment, which we’ll place near the site where the moss scrapings were found. Once we set it up it will only be a matter of maintaining it.

“We won’t have much chance of sighting the bird so we’re relying on modern technology. I’ve only seen it once but I couldn’t get a photo. It’s a real ghost.”

Students show off their acting skills at festival Around 100 thespians from Nelson, Tasman and Golden Bay took part in the University of Otago Sheilah Winn Regional Shakespeare Festival, held at Waimea College last weekend.

This year, Tasman and Nelson districts combined to present one festival, which saw 38 groups from seven secondary schools performing five to fifteen minute scenes from various Shakespeare plays.

The festival scope is wide as students act, direct, serve as crew, compose music, write essays, create costumes and design artwork for their performances. Students could set their scenes in any period or style as long as they used Shakespeare’s words.

Louis Laws from Nelson College won the Rae Herd Award for Best Student Director, of Titus Andronicus, and Nayland College performed a scene from Hamlet which won them the Country Players Award for Best Example of a Team Performance. Nelson College for Girls won the Best Music Award, plus the Gaelynne Pound Award for Best Recovery from an Unplanned Incident on Stage in Julius Caesar, with Gemma Hounsell continuing on with her performance, despite injuring her wrist while on stage.

Garin College’s Nick Erasmuson, who won the Best Actor and Best Delivery of Lines Awards for his performance of Twelfth Night. He was also awarded direct entry into the New Zealand National Shakespeare Schools Production.

He will join 48 students from other regional competitions across the country for the production in Wellington. From this group, 24 students will then be chosen for the Young Shakespeare Company, which performs at Shakespeare's Globe Theatre in London next year.

Thousands turn up for Ageing Expo Monique Bergman

A large crowd attended this year’s annual Positive Ageing Expo which was held in Richmond last week.

The expo, which aims to raise awareness about health and recreation services in the community for older people, was officially opened by Maggie Barry, Minister for Senior Citizens.

“We would like to thank the people for turning out, the feedback from the event has been warm and positive. It is an acknowledgement of the changing demographics in our region and it is a chance to showcase and introduce positive ageing to people,” says Mike Tasman-Jones, Community Partnership Coordinator at Tasman District Council.

Plenty of spot prizes were also on offer, including a Wilson’s Abel Tasman cruise for two, Richmond Mall, Fresh Choice, Queen Street Pharmacy and Stacey vouchers, a Mitre 10 cargo trolley and a $100 Trustpower voucher.

Public speaker and author Lois Tonkin talked about how to cope with grief, and motivational speaker Mark Inglis presented a ‘positive ageing in action’ seminar.

There were plenty of stalls at the expo, including the Electric Bike Hub stall which displayed a range of electric bikes. The Nelson-based company is the largest distributor of commercial and council electric bikes in New Zealand. Owner Jace Hobbs says it is important to keep cycling and exercise part of a daily routine. “For a lot of older people, hills, head wind or commuting distances keeps them off their bikes, the electric bike removes those obstacles and keeps them exercising.

Austin Healeys zip into town for rally Jacob Chandler

in the region to take part in the four day rally, including 18 groups shipping cars over from Australia to compete.

The weekend sets off on Friday night with a social gathering before heading off to the Grape Escape on Saturday morning.

Here the public have a chance to take a look at the classic cars before they continue on to Mapua for lunch.

A navigation run to the A & P Showgrounds in Richmond will end with a best car competition and then driving tests will take place.

On Sunday, the competitors will travel to Takaka, and an AGM will be held on Monday morning.

Geoff Golding can talk about Austin Healeys for hours and has been working with cars since he was in “short pants”.

As an area representative for the Austin Healey car club in the upper South Island, Geoff says he is ready to rev up a storm this weekend with Nelson hosting this year’s Austin Healey Car Rally.

SPCA, Tuesday, March 17: After their article in the Nelson Weekly reporting an overwhelming number of stray cats and kittens, SPCA staff were pleased with the positive response and number of adoptions, with another four finding new homes over the weekend. Nelson SPCA general manager Donna Walz says that while they were pleased with the adoptions, more cats and kittens are still coming into them and she encourages anyone interested in a new kitten to come and see them. Donna also urges people to de-sex their pets to avoid unwanted litters.

Support for Victory Boxing: Kia Ora. I am a Maori student who attends Youth Nelson. A few weeks ago I read an article about Victory Boxing and the positive affect on the community it has.

I agree with this because my friend goes there and I have watched his progress and how much he has achieved.

Victory Boxing is a place where kids can go to stay off the streets. It’s a safe place for

them to go after school to work out and meet other people who are doing good things for others.

Not only does it help the teenagers who are at risk of getting into trouble with the police, but it also helps the younger children in need. There is a monitoring programme where the older students teach and coach the younger ones. I would encourage others to join and support Victory Boxing and Paul Hampton’s efforts to save the youth of Nelson. Not a happy diner: I am emailing you to highlight a concern that I see in research, has been an ongoing issue/concern for some time in this town of New Zealand.

I was drawn into the KFC store at Tahunanui this evening because I felt like some of the Colonel's delights for dinner, after a busy few days at NMIT. What I was subjected to was eyeopening and purely unacceptable in all sorts of ways for a franchise store.

I arrived to initially find the end of the queue at the door. And that queue did end up outside the door at times. I saw two till operators

working very hard to keep the lines moving. One till was unattended throughout.

I also noticed a person doing tasks that at the time seemed trivial to the needs of the customers. I refer to her walking around behind the counter wiping benches and generally doing very little when her staff were working tirelessly to get the queues moving. This lady had a badge on that stated she was the Asst Manager of the store.

I asked her if she could supply another till operator to assist with the queues of people. I was told firmly that if I had a complaint I was to call head office and complain to them. I was polite in my request having never been in this store before, I thought a little assistance in looking at the big picture would help her and her team out. That was not the case. I also noticed a team member having his dinner at the busiest time of the day. The drive-through has one window for ordering and serving, this queue was so long cars where turning around and moving somewhere else. I note that the staff who were serving were working damned hard.

I was told by members of the queue that it was always like this here. I asked them why they come back here if that was the case. They said they have to put up with it because Motueka was to far to go for their KFC fixes.

Having said that, they did say a lot of people now travel to that store miles away because they have had enough of the service at this store.

The manager needs to front with an explanation to the community.

Nelson trio make NZ pipe band

Three students from our region have been selected for the New Zealand Foundation Youth Pipe Band, after being noticed by top class tutors at a recent Summer School.

Caitlin Reid and Tiffany Gilchrist from Nayland College along with Hamish Reade from Nelson Boys Preparatory School, were asked to join the group of around 30 young pipers and drummers that will attend three workshops in Wellington later this month.

“At Summer School we had a mass band practice and from there we were asked to go to the youth band meeting afterwards.

“We received an email a while later saying congratulations we had made the national band, it is pretty satisfying as we had been talking about it and had aspirations to make it into the band,” says Tiffany.

All members of the youth band must be under 21years of age, and its objective is to provide opportunities for young pipers and drummers to learn and develop their musical skills by receiving tuition from some of the country's top bands people.

All three musicians are also members of the Nelson Celtic Pipe Band who won grade three at the New Zealand Pipe Band Championships held in Nelson earlier this month. The band has now made a name for itself as one of the top ten pipe bands technically in the country.

In addition to the workshops, they will also be expected to practice without the group throughout the year, leading up to a major New Zealand Foundation Youth Pipe Band performance in Invercargill in September.

The trio say it is definitely an advantage being able to get together and practice, where others from the group may be practising alone.

“We are really happy and excited about having the experience of playing in the band, we will be able to learn different styles and techniques.

Being in a completely new band and playing with people of a similar age is pretty cool,” says Caitlin.

Trappers kept busy as pest numbers increase

Volunteer trapping groups around Nelson have been working overtime, catching thousands of pests to help protect native birds, with one group in St Arnaud trapping a record 3750 predators last year.

Trapping groups in the Marsden Valley, Grampians, Cable Bay, Rabbit Island and Richmond Hills have reported similar increases, although the numbers were not as high in the Richmond Hills Traps set in the Grampians caught 86 rats in the first two months of this year compared to just 21 last year and five in 2013, and volunteer Bryce Buckland says a hunter with a night vision system reckoned the bush was "alive with rats".

Marsden Valley trapping group volunteers Don Sullivan, Ian Catto and Denise Currie, say their 30 members have also been catching plenty of rats, with 163 trapped in January. "We had a bad year in 2009 when we got over a 1000 rats, but this is worse," Don says.

WTTU won the toss and elected to bat, but were soon regretting that decision as they collapsed to be 26 for six.

Cade Armstrong (14), Symon Carr (17) and Daniel Watson (12) provided some lower order resistance but it was too little, too late, as WTTU were dismissed for 79 in 31.6 overs.

toss was a blessing in disguise because the conditions changed dramatically when it rained following the toss.

“We would have batted too, if we’d won the toss. We wanted to get runs on the board and set a target, and there was some dew around which would have made it hard to bowl and field.

“But then it rained after we’d made the toss and they put the covers on.

They only took them off 15 minutes before the game started and that changed the nature of the wicket.”

It’s ACOB second title of the season after winning the two-day competition. They were also finalists in the Twenty20 competition, a final they lost to Wanderers.

Waimea the early pace-setters Defending champions Waimea Old Boys have already established a lead at the top of the Car Company Nelson Bays division one club rugby competition after a strong 24-7 win over Marist at Jubilee Park on Saturday afternoon.

In Riwaka, Kahurangi also maintained its unbeaten run, pipping Nelson 20-19, while Stoke and Wanderers played out a 27-all draw at Nayland College.

This week's games are all played on Thursday

night, as it's Easter weekend.

That means Wanderers will host Nelson in Brightwater from 7.30pm, Kahurangi will host Waimea Old Boys in Riwaka and Marist will do battle with Stoke at Trafalgar Park, which will also have a 7.30pm kick off.

Curtain raisers will be played before each of the senior games, featuring the clubs' division two sides. The games in Brightwater and Trafalgar Park will kick off at 6pm.

To target these, use small flasher rigs with smelly baits like pilchard cubes, and don't be scared to drag the sinker along the bottom which will stir up some sand to activate their feed time senses.

Well, the seasons are on the change again, which means the fish are all over the place.

As quick as the grapevine tells you where they are, they move on to somewhere new. However, there is still some great fishing to be had if you end up in the right place at the right time.

Pannies and some bigger model snapper are still being caught locally in the blind channel, Tahuna Beach and Kina Bluffs areas. For further afield, fishing from Nelson to Delaware Bay and Hori Bay down to Cape Soucis are all producing good catches.

Recently, the Dawnbreakers Fishing club held its family weekend down at Havelock. The fishing was pretty tough all round but Loren McPherson hooked a great 19 lb snapper to keep her hubby Ollie out of the running for the overall heaviest snapper prize. Congrats Loren.

Rat kingies are making it difficult at times to get the lures and jigs passed them to the heavier greenback models, but this massive population growth has done wonders for the Nelson recreational fishos, a lot of whom have had some great tussles on light gear with these little yellow tail torpedoes.

Blue cod are in good numbers and sizes, and, with a possible change of local rules on the cards, these will become a mainstay catch for many as a fine table fish.

Gurnard are another good tasting table fish that are in large numbers

MOUNTAINBIKING: The national mountain running championships will be held on the Grampians in Nelson on Saturday, April 11. Racing starts at 1pm when the junior women line up for their 4.77km, one-lap race, with the open women timed to start their two-lap, 9.3km race at 1.15pm and the open men scheduled to start their threelap, 13.9km race at 2pm. There are around 280m of climbing and descending on each lap. The course starts on Market Rd behind the Caltex Service Station, adjacent to the United Bowling Club.

Thought to be Trooper Jack Hodgson (Serial No.7/673).

On the Auckland War Memorial Museum Cenotaph database his next of kin is listed as Charles Hodgson (brother), Tarakohe.

Hodgson enlisted from Tarakohe and served with the Canterbury Mounted Rifles during World War One. He embarked on 24 September 1914 from Lyttelton for Wellington.

From Wellington he joined the Main Body and embarked on 16 October 1914 for Egypt. It is unknown whether he survived the war.
