100 days to go, lets celebrate! Best dressed shop in Nelson CBD to win $2000 prize
Tomorrow marks 100 hundred days until the start of the 2011 Rugby World Cup and Nelson’s CBD is rolling out the welcome mats. Well, welcome windows. A ‘100 Days to Go’ competition is being run by Nelson City Council and will see the city split into quadrants with each area adopting a “second team”, one of the four sides that will play in Nelson during the tournament. The four teams playing in Nelson are Russia, Australia, Italy and the United States. Nelson Weekly can also reveal for the first time just what is at stake for retailers. The owner of the best dressed window will win a $2000 advertising prize in the region’s only locally owned newspaper, Nelson Weekly. Judges are looking for effort in the competition and the theme is not necessary rugby-based, says mayor Aldo Miccio. “If a country has Australia it could dress up cultural items or things iconic to that country – it’s a free-for-all basically. We want everyone to decorate their shop windows, restaurants, the entire store interior.” The competition lasts for the entire month of June with judging taking place in the final week of the month so retailers have time to work on their window. Aldo says the dress up competition will be a great

• Scouts for Oscar-winning director Sir Peter Jackson were rumoured to be in Nelson over the weekend on a scouting mission for his new movie, The Hobbit. Landowners in Canaan Downs, on Takaka Hill, were sent an email informing them of the visit from Saturday to Monday to look at possible use of the land in the new movie. Weta workshops would not confirm if Sir Peter also made the trip.
• The passenger in a car involved in a collision with a truck and trailer about 3.40pm Sunday on the Moutere Highway died that night in Nelson hospital. The accident happened at the intersection of Golden Hills Rd and Waimea West Rd. The truck had been travelling south on the highway and was heading into Golden Hills Road when the car, a late model Mercedes Benz, failed to give way. Police are still confirming the identity of the deceased, but believe he is a local in his late 30s. The driver is also a local in his early 40s. Police are seeking witnesses to the accident. anyone with information can contact Bruce McLachlan at Nelson CIB on 546 3840.

son police do regular patrols throughout the area and have caught offenders in the past. “They think if they go behind there that they’re not going to be seen, but that’s not necessarily the case,” says Andrew. As the Saxton Oval pavilion furthers development, Andrew says the more activity will “deter” people doing skids. He says a proposed burnout pad at a motorsport facility might not stop the offending. “Luckily we’ve had no significant damage. We’d hate to get to a stage where everything is closed off.”

But we just have to be vigilant. If they see vehicles doing wheelies then they should call the police,” says sports ground maintenance supervisor, Andrew Cavill. The grass area behind the Saxton Oval athletics track and archery field is increasingly being used for illegal off-roading, while the car-park surrounding the oval has been a haven for boy racers to do burnouts, some using plastic trays under their tyres for less traction. But while Nelson City Council says it is “certainly a big no no,” they are relying on the general public to report any illegal

A spirit of change sweeping through Hyundai is seen in the stunning new i40 medium-sized sedan and wagon. ‘Modern premium’ is the promise from trend-setting Hyundai, which believes premium quality and characteristics should be accessible to everyone. The all-new i40 embodies it with several firsts for the segment: heated and reclining front and rear seats; a heated steering wheel; and an active demist system that automatically detects and clears mist on the windscreen*. The i40 will be best in class with Hyundai’s 1.7-litre diesel engine, codenamed ‘UII’, emitting just 113 g/km of CO2 emissions. Designed and engineered at Hyundai’s R&D headquarters in Russelsheim, Germany, the i40 is the company’s first Large segment vehicle to be developed specifi-
cally for the European market. Taking styling cues from Hyundai’s ‘fluidic sculpture’ design language, it maintains signature features such as the hexagonal grille. “This gorgeous new i40 reflects the spirit of change at Hyundai, and for Hyundai New Zealand as well,” says the Chief Operating Officer of Hyundai New Zealand, Tom Ruddenklau. “The i40 is a perfect example of how we are offering the best and making it accessible to everyone. For example that best-in-class CO2 figure demonstrates the advances we are making towards global leadership in eco-technology,” says Mr Ruddenklau. The wagon will be the first i40 body style in Europe, with a sedan to follow. *Note: i40 Wagon and Sedan options for NZ market yet to be confirmed.

SNEAK PREVIEW: Founders Book Fair volunteers Pat Standish-White and Simon Marling with just a fraction of the books for sale at this years fair. Photo: Andrew Board.
Sorting Founders book’s a tall order
Hundreds of boxes, housing thousands of books are being unpacked and put on display for the annual Founders Book Fair, starting this weekend. Dozens of volunteers are carefully sorting, packing and displaying thousands of books all in preparation for the annual fair. The fair starts this Saturday and is expected to attract thousands of people to the Founders Heritage Park. The Founders Book Fair has been supported by the Nelson community since it began in 1988. Pre loved books are dropped off to the windmill throughout the year and are sorted for the following book fair. A group of 12 dedicated volunteers spend two days a week sorting and categorising over 40 tonnes of books, in preparation for the big event. Paperbacks, hardbacks and magazines are sorted into up to 50 different categories. Volunteer numbers will be boosted by a large number of additional helpers during the final preparatory days, and at the fair itself. It will be all hands on deck to ensure that over 100 trestle tables are replenished regularly to ensure an excellent selection of books is available throughout the entire nine-day event – from June 4 to June 12. Each year the Book Fair brings in significant levels of income for improvements to Founders Park. Prices start at 50 cents for some paper backs and the Jaycee Room will again be solely dedicated to children’s books priced from 20 cents. Book Fair single day passes are $2 at the windmill, or $5 for a nine day fair pass. Doors will be open 10am to 4.30pm daily.

Freedom camping ban bad for Nelson, says retailer New manager The banning of freedom campers in Nelson appointed for will have a negative economic spin-off for the city says manager of the region’s largest shopping complex. music fest Richmond Mall manager David Hill says he doesn’t agree with a recently-passed Nelson City Council by-law that prohibits vehicles to camp overnight on council land “but out of every cloud there is a huge silver lining for someone and in this case that is Richmond Mall”. Nelson City Council is instead encouraging freedom campers to use a new low cost option at its Maitai Valley Motor Camp to help frugal tourists sleep on the cheap. But David expects hundreds of motorhome and campervan tourists will instead go and stay in Richmond for free and at the same time, spend their money there too. David actively encourages freedom campers at the mall and says the spinoffs are financial and for security – with overnight vandalism stopping cold with the introduction of the policy five years ago. He now expects numbers to further increase because of the NCC by-law and says each camper spends around $100 in the mall during a one night stay. “Most do their grocery shopping here and then you chuck in a coffee and a magazine and very quickly it adds up and at a time when local people aren’t shopping as much,” he says. Nelson Weekly could not find any complex or business that does the same in Nelson. World of Wearable Art’s Museum do not encourage overnight stay but it is available for New Zealand Motor Caravan Association members, all of whom are self-contained. David says the mall promotes the service

Photo: Steve Page. through the motor caravan association and through tourism radio. “They can come and park here for free and use our toilets and facilities as long as they are gone by nine in the morning.” In the summer months around 20 to 30 vans fill the mall car park each night with that figure dropping off to around five or six in the middle of winter. But with freedom camping now not allowed in Nelson, David is expecting a boom. “I’m surprised the Nelson council has got this policy, I just see so many benefits from them [freedom campers]. When I read in the Nelson Weekly that the bylaw was coming in I
thought it would be a crying shame if people didn’t know that we have this resource out here. It is currently being utilized but we do have more space so we are happy for more people to come out and use it.” NZMCA Nelson/Tasman chairperson Henry Clark says the new by-law is the “best thing out” and that “the law should be quite clear. Everything should be self-contained”. Henry says he was aware that the Richmond Mall allowed self-contained motor homes to stay overnight but not freedom campers. “They’re disgraceful quite frankly. But if they offer the parking area for them to park overnight then there’s no problem.”
The Nelson Music Festival Trust has a new general manager for Nelson’s Adam Chamber Music Festival. Acclaimed local musician and recording engineer Bob Bickerton has accepted the role for the biennial festival, which will make its mark in Nelson for the 12th time in 2013. Bob was the Director at the Nelson School of Music when the Adam Chamber Music Festival had its first ever show in 1992, and he has staged managed the last three Festivals. He says he will draw on his eclectic experience within the music industry to enhance the event’s popularity further ashore. “The Adam Chamber Music Festival is regarded as the country’s only professional chamber festival and has a reputation for attracting high calibre chamber musicians from within New Zealand and around the world,” says Bob. “I’m looking forward to building on that reputation to increase our overseas visitor numbers to the event, and to firmly cement Nelson in the international arena, as a key destination for lovers of classical music.”

The Harbour Master’s
diary
• An exciting week for the port last week as many ships come and go and some unique vessels with important cargo. Six container vessels including the Santa Regina regular service, more than 12 fishing vessel movements, two ships specifically designed to carry fruit, two car carriers, two log ships, a fertiliser ship, one ship came in carrying a new crane for the port and over 35 boats. • The difference between ships and boats. Ships can carry boats, boats can’t carry ships… • Speaking of carried. I came across a guy early one morning standing in a dinghy, jacket over his head, drifting down the tide. When asked if he had a life jacket with him the answer was no. What was his name and address? Joe Blow from Lala Land. Many thanks to the police for their prompt follow up and assistance. • Then there were the pair that tried to run their kayak between a wharf and a ship berthing. One wonders at the sanity….. • Security is on the ball at Port Nelson and, with the aid of our extensive camera coverage over the water; we have been able to identify many such mindless individuals. The camera coverage of Port Nelson will be invaluable after the introduction of the new by-laws. So remember – “If in doubt – don’t go out”.

Birthday of giving wins local group national award A birthday with a difference has seen a Nelson group win a national award for its efforts and in the process, becoming a finalist for an international honour. Last year Altrusa International of Nelson gave away thousands of dollars to 27 charities and groups throughout the region to celebrate its 30th birthday in Nelson. Earlier this month that generosity earned them the national Mamie L Bass trophy for best service project at the groups national conference. President Chris Mouter will now head to the international conference to represent Nelson and the country in a bid to win the International Mamie L Bass Award – something not unfamiliar to Nelson, the group won the award back in 1995, the last time it also won the national award. It was also the last time the award was won by a group outside of the United States. The national conference was doubly good for Chris who was presented with a prestigious International Service Award, called a Lamplighter, for her service to Altrusa. Chris joined Nelson club in 1992 and has served in a number of positions within the club and then on the national board before becoming vice governor. She had barely taken on this role when the then-Governor died suddenly and Chris stepped into the role of Governor which she held for close to four years, instead of the usual two. She then represented New Zealand on the International Board which entailed some travelling to USA. Chris will travel to the international awards in the United States next month.

TO THE EDITOR
Your article in last week’s Nelson Weekly on the blue penguins on Rocks Rd, reminded me of an interesting experience of around 60 years ago. Our family owned a holiday cottage at the present day suburb of Monaco where we spent most school holidays. In the August holidays we were awakened at around 2 or 3 in the morning by a weird and loud hee-haw call from under the house, punctuated by high pitched yells. All quite eerie. This sort of disturbance continued for several years and always in spring. The house was too low to the ground to investigate and it was some time after the initial disturbance that we heard sounds in the early evening on the high tide coming closer up the beach. Going out we discovered several pairs of blue penguins arriving to set up their nests. In those days of course the road on the north-west beach did not exist so our house was only a few metres from the high tide. They loved it and so did us children.

along with the Nelson Youth Orchestra and Peta Spooner Dance Academy are hosting a Gala Concert from 7.30pm. The musical and drama concert also includes special performances from Callum McMenamin, Hugo Bowden and Pippa Dorson. The gala is the showpiece event for the group and will be the first time many of the children will have performed at the Theatre Royal and they have been preparing since the start of the year. Tickets to Tuesday evening’s performance are $10 for adults and $5 for children.

Hardykids believes that every child needs a strong and secure base while in care. Therefore we provide each child with a primary caregiver who will support them through the settling process, help them with all their routines such as sleeping, bottle feeds and nappy changes. Having a primary caregiver is important for infants and toddlers as it means your child will be supported by a teacher who will know all the special things about them, be a consistent career for them and build a close relationship with, all very important things for our youngest children. At Hardykids we celebrate free movement. Free movement means we allow infants to reach each of their milestones, such as sitting and walking in their own time without assisting them. Free movement focuses on the process of moving and not the result. So instead of propping an infant to sit, we allow them the time and space to practice the skills needed to achieve these skills independently, helping infants experience the joy of success after patient and persistent effort and the pleasure of achieving their goals. Pregnancy is an extraordinary journey, filled with unique physical and emotional changes and there to guide you through this very special journey is Gentle Hands midwife Lynne Adams. Lynne offers comprehensive and supportive care planned to meet your individual requirements and says her philosophy is built on supporting your choices. Lynne believes this is paramount to women having a fulfilling and positive birth experience. “My role is to support you and your family through pregnancy, labour, birth and the post natal period and to prepare you for the early days of parenting.” Lynne has experience in home, hospital and water births. “Gentle- Hands” - “Working in partnership with women - creating positive birth experiences together” For more information or to

that young children reach their full potential,” says head teacher Marga Kamps. Their qualified early childhood teachers encourage children to pose questions, find solutions, and develop social skills by working with those around them. Through exploration children increase their awareness of the world around them and through creativity they learn how to express themselves and communicate. Kiwi Treasures tailor their programs to suit each child’s needs, “not all children suit structured learning, some thrive better with more play activities,” says Marga. The centre provides parents distinct choices to suit the ages and stages of their individual children. Kiwi Treasures extends this flexibility to children and their family/whanau with parttime and casual sessions through to full-time care. They find parents as first teachers have a keen understanding of what works for their family. One of their strengths is to fit in as needed, and they find parents really appreciate their flexible approach. For further information and for enrolments contact Marga on 547 4703 or email admin@kiwitreasures.co.nz Grotime New Zealand is a familyowned company, distributing a comprehensive range of quality nursery furniture to selected baby stores nationwide. Junior hockey programme doubles in size Nelson’s junior hockey programme is the most successful in the country, almost doubling in numbers from last year. Close to 500 kids come along each Thursday night to learn and play hockey, says regional development manager Craig Brett. “We spilt the kids up to small groups of eight with a coach per group. That means they
are getting a lot of benefit out of the sessions. Also having junior hockey on a Thursday night means kids can also play another sport on Saturday,” he says. The success of the junior hockey programme follows in the footsteps of an incredible 800 kids that took part in the recent Primary Schools Tournament, says Craig.

Broadgreen Oaks stand tall Broadgreen Intermediate Oaks kept their unbeaten record intact in Junior Grade 1 when they withstood a spirited challenge from Waimea Intermediate 8B. Broadgreen jumped out to a sizeable 7–1 lead on account of some excellent straight line play and accurate shooting by Courtney Neve. Waimea tested Broadgreen in the second quarter going almost goal for goal. The third quarter belonged to Waimea as they out played the girls in green to the tune of 10-4. Broadgreen took the court for the final quarter with increased intensity. Waimea had an abundance of possession however the “twin towers” Maggie Riley and Tayla Kirker had a big say in the proceedings as they applied pressure to the Waimea shooters. Tayla Kirker has an impressive strong pass which was effective on the long feed as she constantly looked down court. Neve Riley put in a great performance at centre where she displayed good anticipation and timing to pull in crucial intercepts in the final quarter. Cheyenne Case Connor was handy at wing attack and center, while Holly Chandler was “jack of all trades” as she donned three different bibs. Holly drove well onto the ball and put in some nice feeds from the circle edge.
Goal shoot, Toni Dunn found her radar in the final quarter to convert four goals to register the 19–17 win. Jacks Pro Netball fired on all cylinders in their Grade 3 game against Wanderers Phoenix to record a convincing 44–27 win and keep on track for their promotion into Grade 2. Jacks have a trump card in shooter, Natasha Tucker who was literally a head and shoulders above the Wanderers circle defenders. Although Natasha was a little shaky to begin with, once she found her rhythm it was almost impossible to stop as she converted 36 of her team’s 44 goals. Wing attack, Jaime Kingi was lively through court and found the top of the circle well for prime position to feed. Wing defence Toni Burn picked up ball through court and became a bigger threat when she moved to centre, becoming the pivotal link. Nayland College 9A came up against an extremely classy Waimea College 9A team in their Collegiate 1 game. Although suffering a heavy loss the Nayland girls worked hard to combat their opposites. Center Dana Brown did some good work through court while Gabby Smith toiled for the entirety. The Nayland team displayed a good attitude on court and with coach, Joanna Andrew at the helm their game is certain to improve.

Nelson Suburbs are anticipating a much more improved Richmond Athletic side than the one they knocked out of the Chatham Cup last year. The two top local teams will come face to face on Saxton Field this Monday at 2:30pm. AMI Nelson Suburbs currently sit second place on the Mainland Premier League table despite a 1-1 draw with Halswell on Saturday. Gagame Feni scored the side’s only goal, from the penalty spot. But Nelson Suburbs won’t have the luxury of a bye that Nelson Pine Industries first division leaders Richmond Athletic have. They instead, will be up against Western on Saturday afternoon. Solomon Island under-20 left back Chris Tafoa is likely to face Richmond after arriving in Nelson last week, although the official paperwork is yet to come through. Last year Nelson Suburbs defeated Richmond Athletic 2-0 in a heated affair. But a number of top imports have boosted the side for 2011. The match will also be a send off for Richmond import Jordan Yong who heads back to the UK on June 8. Captain Joe Green will also return home later in the month. The pair have agreed contracts with Northern Premier League side Nelson Suburbs player Brandon Kay in action. King’s Lynn.

Stoke get revenge and stay in that winning groove Stoke love beating Waimea Old Boys on their own turf, beating them on their club day made it ever sweeter. Accesman Stoke extracted revenge after Waimea beat them on their own club day earlier in the season and in the process keeping their title defence on course with the important 18-13 victory at Jubilee Park on Saturday. Loose forwards Stu Tunnicliff and John Duff epitomized Stoke’s efforts has they dominated possession in the final ten minutes to hold on to the win. Captain Shaun Begg inspired his forwards to hold strong in a tight contest, and they certainly were up to the task. Jack Umaga continues to flourish in the playmaker role and linked well with standout Sione Holani. Sione was in his bustling best form from the get go and scored Stoke’s opening try. Tyler KinnonStevenson scored Stoke’s second in his first game back since a long injury layoff. Jarred Aberhart scored the final five pointer and Shaun kicked one penalty as Stoke sealed the vital victory. Stoke manager Brian Hutchison says it was Stoke’s best game to date. “This was Waimea‘s Club day and the Stoke boys gate crashed the party.” The Stoke Women’s team met old foe Waimea Old Boys in their second round clash at Jubilee Park on Saturday. But they couldn’t manage the same success the first division side had, going down 20-10. Waimea started strongly and ran in two

Stoke wasn’t deterred however, and showed good character to gain the upper hand in territory and possession for large periods of the game. Unfortunately though, Stoke failed to take their chances when it counted and two tries weren’t enough of a reply to Waimea’s early lead. A standout performance from seasoned campaigner Kirsty Johnsen

vantage in a fast an freeflowing game, enjoyed by spectators in both camps. But the game was far from over with Tapawera throwing everything they had at a resolute Stoke Reds defence in the second half. But a couple of late tries near the end of the game sealed it for Stoke Reds with a final score of 33-17. The next game is the start of the second round playing Rangers away at their Upper Moutere ground.
