Penguin Carnage at Kaiteriteri
Three little penguins/ korora have been killed by a dog attack at Little Kaiteriteri Beach, known habitat for the native species. The three adults comprise a successful breeding pair which have been monitored for three years, and a young, single adult. The female of the pair was of white flipper origin mostly seen in Banks Peninsula.
The juvenile adult is thought to be an offspring of the breeding pair in 2021 and just reaching breeding age. “This is such a preventable tragedy,” says Linda Jenkins, Trustee, Tasman Bay Blue Penguin Trust.
“Unfortunately, some irresponsible dog owners come to the beach and let their dog run loose on the basis that their dog wouldn’t kill anything. Dogs are natural hunters with an acute sense of smell so they will hunt and kill. Since October 2022 we have recorded six penguin fatalities locally due to dog attack, and these are only the ones we know
about. It’s highly likely there are more. This latest carnage takes the tally to nine and is more grim evidence of a very poor conservation record in Tasman.”
Dog owners are reminded that it is their responsibility to ensure their dog is under effective control at all times around penguin habitat areas. The
most effective way of achieving this is to use a lead. Other penguin predators include cats, rats, stoats and ferrets. Wider threats include car and boat strike, set nets/trawling, fishing bycatch and reduced food sources through climate change. Little penguins/ korora are protected under the Wildlife Act
which is administered by DOC, but on a local level it is the Council’s dog control bylaw that prevails. In Tasman the Dog Control Bylaw 2014 comes up for review in 2024, providing an opportunity for a vastly improved fit-for-purpose bylaw to be formulated which prioritises native wildlife protection. The
current bylaw is letting our penguins down, dog attacks keep happening and we risk the species becoming locally extinct unless better safeguards are put in place to ensure their survival says Linda. The official DOC threat classification of little penguins/korora is “at risk, declining”.

Once in a lifetime snorkel experience
Experiencing Marine Reserves (EMR) - Te Kura Moana ran their 22nd annual Poor Knights competition trip on Friday, 12 May, sponsored by Dive! Tutukaka and The Bobby StaffordBush Foundation with Brooklyn student Hugh Robinson and his father, John on-board. EMR is a programme of the Mountains to Sea Conservation Trust. The day started with a minute’s silence to show respect and aroha to the young man and his whanau following the recent tragedy at Abbey Caves.
Students went from as far north as Peria (Kaitaia) and as far south as Dunedin to experience one of Atoearoa’s oldest marine reserves. Students are selected based on action projects they have undertaken and the enthusiasm they show when studying & experiencing the marine environment. The national delivery of EMR is thanks to a network of provider organisations across the country (Tasman Bay Guardians in Nelson/Tasman) and would not be possible without the amazing support of the The Tindall Foundation and Lotteries National Community.
EMR started in Tai Tokerau/Northland in 2001 with just three schools and the idea of comparing unprotected marine areas to fully protected marine areas with water safety messages embedded throughout the programme. Seeing huge tamure/snapper
swimming has inspired thousands of kids to take action for the marine environment and exercise kaitiakitanga - guardianship for their local beach or harbour.
For this year’s trip there were 32 students and 30 guardians representing 26 schools from 7 regions of Aotearoa including Northland, Auckland, Taranaki, Gisborne, Wellington, Nelson/ Tasman and Otago. Since 2002, we have taken representatives from 399 schools, totalling 563 students! Each student attends with a parent or guardian. They also had some second generation students attend as guardians!
“Action projects this year included monitoring rimurimu with the Love Rimurimu project in Wellington, rahui monitoring, comparison of marine species at different areas, invasive species research, a kina barren board
game, litter blitz with Sustainable coastlines, informative video about the impacts of microplastics and the local rahui,” says EMR founder Samara Nicholas.
On board the vessel ‘Perfect Day’ their snorkel site this year was the stunning ‘Garden’s at Maroro Bay, part
of the Poor Knights Islands that have been protected by no-take status since 1981. Participants were delighted to see thousands of two spot demoiselles, black angel fish, snapper galore and the friendly sandagers wrasse. With this being the first time most of the students and guard-
ians had ever visited the Poor Knights!
“I had to pinch myself to make sure it wasn’t a dream cause it was so good you couldn’t make it up. Also I love the blue maomao in the arch because you could go right next to them and they wouldn’t even move away,” says Hugh.

Deserving community member a “Gold as Gold’ recipient
Much-loved and staunch community stalwart Carol Fowler was the recipient of ASB’s Good as Gold segment on TV1’s Seven Sharp in May.
The segment celebrates and shows love to amazing Kiwis doing great things in their communities.
“Carol is a selfless and compassionate wonder woman who always goes above and beyond for Motueka and has a wonderful positive impact on the wider Tasman district. She is a friend to the entire community and always extends a hand to those who are struggling,” said producers.
Carol has been the attendance officer / social worker / Breakfast Club organizer, community minded indispensable woman at Motueka High School for about 30 years.
She is the most loved person despite having a difficult role as truancy officer because she has a great sense of humour
and supports and helps families practically. She is a real good sort and always spending her own money on kids and families in need. No matter what the need or problem is, Carol’s response is always,
“Leave it with me,” and she’ll find a way forward. Young people in our town love her. She’s recently had a very hard time with her husband’s health problems, and she still continues to juggle everything and
does a great job. Renowned for putting her hand in her own pocket on many occasions when a truant may need lunch or bus money, presenter Michael Holland advised Carol to
spend the $10,000 she’s been awarded on herself.
“Carol’s a woman of great integrity and compassion who’s done so much for Motueka and the Tasman district,” said the nominator.

MHS Ignite Programme inspires future leaders
Congratulations to Kaleb Kampjes, Ethan Staples, Theo Hansen, Jordan Pickett, Josh Birchfield, Campbell Vette, James Pearce, Jacob Wilkins, Nikson Evitt-Pascoe and Zane Richards - the students from Motueka High School who graduated from the 2023 Ignite Programme.
This is the third cohort of graduates who have completed the 3-year programme with Whenua Iti Outdoors, designed to ‘ignite’ their leadership potential through a series of outdoor adventures and challenges - all facilitated to improve their decision-making, teamwork and confidence in leadership settings.
Throughout the programme the students were encouraged to face and overcome such challenges as a team - supporting their companions and tackling problems together. “By the end of the programme, the boys really looked after each other, and were a strong, cohesive unit. They’ve grown in self-confidence and self-esteem and I can see future leaders amongst them,” says Keiran Winitana, the lead instructor on the programme.
The activities on their programme included rock-climbing, abseiling, rafting, tramping, caving, high-rope challenges, camping out under tent flies whilst cooking meals and assisting in preparation and planning for the adventures. The life-skills gained are an essential component of the Ignite experience. When asked, all of the students agreed that the programme helped them to improve their selfmanagement, decision-making, teamwork, leadership and empathy traits.
One student commented that the programme helped with “…understanding how to operate in a team well and use communication effectively.”
Another student noted that “the challenges were always difficult, but when I finished them it was always worth it.”
The Ignite programme is currently in its fifth year, with participating students now represented at each year of Motueka High School. It was established and funded with the generosity of a local community donor who identified the need in our community to provide a platform for young men to be given the opportunity for self-development and as potential future leaders. “The programme’s primary goal is on such skill development that can be transferred to daily life, providing a sound foundation for making positive decisions during their teen and later years.”
Whenua Iti Outdoors are incredibly grateful for the opportunity to deliver the Ignite Programme. “It is a real taonga in the outdoors sector to be able to work with students over an extended period of time. Often our programmes are days or weeks in length, but to work with the same students over 3 years is just awesome – both in terms of the student outcomes, and also for our instructors,” says Mark Bruce-Miller, CEO at Whenua Iti Outdoors.
The programme is a collaborative effort between MHS, Whenua Iti and the community donor, with additional mentoring and support provided by MHS to enhance the learning opportunities throughout the programme. “We think this programme is a great example of how we can work together to create benefits for the wider community. There are now over 50 young men from the Motueka area who have been engaged through this programme. This is bound to have a wider positive impact for the whole community.”
Students, from left; Kaleb Kampjes, Ethan Staples, Theo Hansen, Jordan Pickett, Josh Birchfield, Campbell Vette, James Pearce and Jacob Wilkins were students on the Ignite programme who enjoyed a variety of activities.

LOVE OUR LITTLE BLUES
The Big Sing 2023 regional festival will be held in the ASB Theatre in Blenheim on Tuesday, 6 June. The competition will begin at 1pm (open to the general public with a gold donation upon entry). The Gala Concert will begin at 6pm, where the choirs will present their two favourite songs and the awards from the competition will be
presented. Tickets for the evening concert are now on sale (Adults $25, Seniors $20, Children/ Students $10. Phone 035208558). This year, the NZCF Nelson/Marlborough region is delighted to welcome seven choirs from five schools (Marlborough Boys’ College, Marlborough Girls College, Motueka
High School, Nayland College and Nelson College for Girls) to participate in this event. The Gala concert will showcase 166 talented young singers from these local and regional secondary schools, singing an amazing selection of different styles of music. An exciting new addition is the Te Reo award trophy which has
been introduced this year for the best performance by a choir singing in Te Reo. Of the two hundred choirs which will compete nationally 60 choirs will have the chance to be selected to participate at either the South Island Cadenza in Timaru on Aug 11/12 or The Big Sing National Finale in Auckland on Aug 25-27 2023.
Children aged 7-17 enjoyed two weeks of introductory drama workshops taught by Auckland-based education consultant Douglas Roberts. Douglas regularly runs workshops in Auckland and the UK. He believes that drama study can benefit all children, helping them to develop important skills for life such as communication, self-confidence and teamwork. The event was organised and hosted by a local home-school family but both home-school and school children attended. The workshops were a great success and parents and children alike are eager for Douglas to return next year to help the children create an entire production, from script to performance.

Legendary Jackie Clarke performing in Motueka
Load control saves you money
Load control is a mechanism that Network Tasman and many other lines companies use to manage the demand that heating water places on the electricity network during ‘peak’ demand periods.
Load control allows Network Tasman to remotely shut o electrical hot water cylinders for a short time during the periods of highest demand. As a result, Network Tasman can keep costs down and pass those savings on to our consumers. Cheaper prices for water heating are shown on your electricity bill as a line called ‘controlled’ or ‘economy’.
Controlling the load in this way doesn’t impact the way you use hot water e.g. to wash dishes, do laundry or have showers. Our aim is to ensure that you don’t even notice that load control is being used.
Home-grown chanteuse Jackie Clarke turns her powerhouse vocals, wicked humour and maverick entertainment style to interpret the songs of the 20th and 21st Centuries most legendary divas.
Jackie pays homage to Judy Garland, Shirley Bassey, Peggy Lee, Barbra Streisand and more! From Alberta Hunter to Dolly Parton, from Kate Bush to Lady Gaga, Jackie lets her diva flag fly, while playfully interacting with the audience with trademark witty panache.
Load control helps save consumers money because Network Tasman doesn’t have to invest as much money upgrading the capacity of its local network to cope with ever-increasing peaks during the network’s busy hours.
Network Tasman’s Regulatory and Commercial Manager, Daniel Vincent says “If we didn’t have load control, we would have needed to make a signi cant investment in the network to keep up with the ever-increasing demand some years ago, and consumers would already be paying for that investment in their power bill. Deferring investment keeps our network at a level that’s in line with what the community actually needs and, in turn, keeps electricity prices down”.
“Management of peak load through hot water load control by Network Tasman saves the company and its consumers a signi cant amount of money every year.”
Accompanied by her trusty sidekick Maestro on piano, expect iconic
songs performed with tender soul and gleeful virtuosity.
In 2018 Jackie Clarke was awarded an MNZM for services to entertainment; 40 years treading the boards in theatre, (Mamma Mia, Shirley Valentine) music (When The Cat’s Been Spayed, The Lady Killers) and T.V. (NZ Idol).
Jackie co-founded pop-comedy group When The Cat’s Been Spayed, releasing two albums and touring for ten years. She’s one-third of The Lady Killers alongside Tina Cross and Suzanne Lynch and as a soloist she’s worked with

artists such as Sir Dave Dobbyn, Annie Crummer, Greg Johnson and Simon O’Neill.
On stage Jackie has starred in Joseph & the Amazing Technicolour Dreamcoat, Mamma Mia, Anything Goes, Sweet Charity and Once, as well as NZ works The Underwatermelon Man, C The Musical & Dominion Road the Musical.
She has performed with all of New Zealand’s orchestras and been part of Jubilation for 20 years.
Television work includes judging NZ Idol, guesting on the Jacquie Brown Diaries
and presenting several documentaries. Don’t miss this rollicking show of bravura song styling, dazzling frockage, pin-drop moments and plenty of laughs from a NZ dairy-fed Diva with her feet on the ground and her head amongst the stars.

Imagining a new future
Feelings of being overwhelmed by the current state of our planet are common. There has never been a more pressing time to design a new future. To sustain life on Earth there cannot be infinite economic growth. We can design an economy that delivers wellbeing for both the planet and the people.
The Local Matters team invites you to their next event on Wednesday, 7 June, 7.30 pm at Mapua Hall where Gareth Hughes and Jack Santa Barbara will discuss the most important mission facing the world right now - redesigning our economic system to ensure collective wellbeing on a healthy planet. A Wellbeing Economy includes everything that matters to people such as our environment, our health, the food we eat, the clothes we wear and so on. Gareth and Jack will outline the powerful opportunities that exist and how we can all be part of the
solution to build a better world.
Gareth Hughes will share his insights gained from twenty years pushing for transformational change as an activist and politician. He will explore how our current economic system operates and the positive alternatives inspiring people around the world. Gareth is the Aotearoa Country Lead of the Wellbeing Economy Alliance (WEAll), a registered
charity focussed on creating and sharing new knowledge and policy to influence change towards a Wellbeing Economy.
Jack Santa-Barbara will focus on the key tasks of the transformation: reducing energy and material throughput, and ensuring supports are in place for the anticipated disruptions this will create. Jack Santa Barbara is a retired CEO and academic. He has a long-stand-

Hello Motueka. The Government have announced more changes in its clean car policy that have effect on both low emitting and high emitting vehicles. With regards to new Hilux, Fortuner, Prado, Land Cruiser, and our sports vehicles, the emissions tax is increasing by almost double, so come and see us if you are in the market for a new Hilux...we do have stock on the ground, but this is limited. If new is not what you need, then we have a huge array of used Hilux so please give me a call and we definitely meet your needs.

Big interest in our future and that of the planet’s
By: Jan Heijs, Mapua
The Mapua Hall was packed on Monday, 17 April. About 200 people came to hear a presentation by Dr. Mike Joy about what will happen to the planet and to us if we keep doing what we are doing. Dr. Joy showed very convincing information about the many aspects of our world that are suffering due to the way we all live our lives. The climate crisis is just one symptom of what is called overshoot (using more global resources than the planet can manage). Other symptoms we experience are eutrophication (green soup in our rivers and lakes), biodiversity collapse, fishery depletion, groundwater pollution, ocean acidification and many more. And all of these are interlinked.
Dr. Joy presented a compelling argument that many initiatives we see all around us, such as renewable energy, EV cars, reforestation, are a small
step in the right direction but not anywhere near enough to protect us from a full collapse in many areas. He pointed out that current carbon absorption strategies like planting trees, developing wetlands, whilst very worthwhile, are merely replacing the carbon absorption that ceased when trees were originally felled, or land was originally drained for agricultural development. He also used the example of milk produced in New Zealand which is largely converted into milk powder and a large part of that is used as an ingredient in the production of unhealthy food.
Dr. Joy clearly showed that the current economic system of endless economic growth, using indicators like GDP, is a selfimposed dogma. It is clearly not working for many of us, nor for our planet. He reminded us of a famous saying:’ Anyone who believes exponential growth can go on forever in a finite world is either a madman or an
economist’ (Kenneth Boulding). The only way a collapse can be avoided is to use much less of everything; we simply cannot keep doing and keep using what we have been over the last 50 years.
Dr. Joy concluded that we must change how we live, what we value and what it means to be successful. But that transformative action at the scale we need seems unlikely to happen under politics and business as usual. All political parties, here and globally, and popularity driven, pitting people against each other is their default setting, and the required tough decisions would see them gone by lunchtime. Change must be initiated by the grassroots. Dr. Joy offered a number of suggestions for a better future. Some of these are regenerative food production, strong neighbourhoods, energy rationing systems and most importantly a 50%-75% reduction in total consumption,
mainly by those that are affluent.
It was a remarkably interesting and sobering experience. After the presentation many of the audience had questions and time was too short to answer all of them. At the end, many people stayed for more than an hour to talk with Dr. Joy and amongst each other.
The event was
organised by ‘Local Matters’, an enthusiastic team of local members of the Green Party, who organise non-political events around sustainability in the region. It was the third time Dr. Joy presented at a Local Matters event. His previous presentations were about our fresh-water streams, wetlands, lakes, food and energy. Many
other Local Matters events have also been held over the last few years with topics such as housing, climate change, ethical investments and local examples of sustainable practices. The increasing number of people interested in these topics shows that our community is concerned and wants to see change. The next Local
Matters event will be on 7 June, when Gareth Hughes and Jack Santa Barbara will share thoughts on how to move from the traditional growth economy to an economy where well-being is the focus. See page 11.
Dr Joy’s presentation and video is posted on the Greens Motueka Facebook site.

From small beginnings…“Ahakoa he iti he Pounamu”
Over the last 10 years we have gone from a building to a home away from home, from basic beginnings to shelves full of carefully selected sustainable handmade resources, from empty paddocks to an orchard and mara (garden) full of kai to share and an environment full of tamariki happy, social, independent and engaged, from new enrolments to Nature Kids whanau, from kaiako (teachers) as individuals to a strong, cohesive, inspired, forward thinking, collaborative team. From seedlings to a small forest…….
If you haven’t already done so, come and wander up our forest path listening to the sound of manu (birds) singing, tamariki laughing and experience for yourself the sensory wonder of our naturally calming, welcoming and nurturing environment.
At Nature Kids we appreciate the aesthetically appealing space that is our small, handcrafted centre. Our nature focused approach emphasizes child led learning where tamariki are empowered to guide their own learning through play. Our massive outdoor environment, small numbers, homely family feel and community of like-minded whanau, makes us stand out from other centres. We have strong teaching practices that reflect our love of nature and respect for our children and our environment.
We are coming up to our 10th birthday at Nature Kids, where has that time gone. We have had ten years to get to know quite a few local whanau and embed our nature based centre into Motueka culture and we couldn’t be happier.
We support child based learning through play which studies have shown make our tamariki “happier, more self-reliant and better students for life”. Evidence from anthropology, psychology and history show us that free play is the primary means by which children learn to control their lives, solve problems, get along with their peers and become emotionally resilient.

A nature based learning environment
Nurturing a Nature
Based Philosophy:
Nature lies at the heart of our educational philosophy. We believe that the natural world holds immense potential for learning and growth. By immersing tamariki in a nature-rich environment, we empower them to develop a deep appreciation for te Taiao (the natural environment) and the world around them. Our commitment to sustainable practices is woven into every aspect of our operations, from our curriculum to the daily activities. We strive to instil in children a sense of kaitiakitanga and responsibility for te Taiao the environment, fostering their understanding of the interconnectedness between humans and nature.
Our commitment to culturally respectful practices ensures ngã tamariki are authentically engaged in tikanga that upholds the mana of tangata whenua and Te Tiriti o Waitangi. Our relationship with Ranginui and Papatúãnuku is imbedded in our day to day engagement with tamariki , te Taiao and Te Ao Mãori – the Mãori world view.
Building Positive and Collaborative Relationships
We recognise the significance in developing strong relationships with tamariki and their whãnau and the importance of fostering positive and collaborative connections and relationships for tamariki and their wider community. By creating a welcoming and inclusive atmosphere, we ensure that each tamaiti (child) feels a sense of belonging and is valued as an individual. We work closely with families, recognising their vital role as partners in their child’s education and engage with the

wider community, embracing opportunities for collaboration and learning beyond the confines of our center.
“Mã te pã te tamaiti e whakatipu” – It takes a village to raise a child

Vice President Di Fairhall shared her excitement about the anniversary celebration, “It was so lovely to catch up with people that we haven’t seen for years. There was much laughter and chatter as we reminisced about
the early days of the club and celebrated how far we’ve come together.”
One of the standout events hosted by the Motueka Country Music Club is their annual free Country Music Festival, held every January at Marchwood Park. This festival has become a highly anticipated gathering, attracting music lovers from all over New Zealand. As the highlight on the club’s calendar, the festival showcases a wide range of talented performers and creates an opportunity for both professionals and amateurs to share their love for country music.

Equal competition important to footballers
Saturday saw youth football for 11–14-yearolds played out a bit differently, from the previous few week’s games. This season
Nelson Bays Football decided to run the first six weeks of the season as grading games, meaning that all the divisions were open, pitting all three tiers in the grades against each other. The game results spoke for themselves with blow-out scores resembling 14-0, 10-0 and 19-0 in favour of Motueka’s opposition. In Junior and Youth football if one team is indubitably stronger than the other gaining goals to this extent, then a ‘Mercy’ rule is applied. This agreement between all Nelson Bays coaches is an agreement to provide equal competition and reduce the risk of one-sided matches. Not only do the loosing team feel discouraged and bitter towards the game, the winning team does not improve as they get sloppy in their football habits. This stops the development of both
teams both physically and mentally. When the score difference is nine goals, the mercy rule is applied, the game is paused, and coaches discuss ways to make the match more even. The opposition can choose to remove a player, give an extra player to the loosing team, mix up the team or even move the front line to the back and vice versa. These tactics keep the scores realistic at 10-0 instead of huge goal differences like 19-0. NBF first intended to run these grading games for six weeks, but after backlash from coaches around the region, have lowered it to three weeks and last Saturday saw the first of the graded games in the tier divisions, in each grade. The Motueka AFC Wasps, who are in their first season of 13/14th grade, are one of those teams who were adversely affected by the open grading system. A true red division team, being slammed by three blue division
teams that were top of the grade last year. The score from their recent game in Golden Bay of 3-2, showed that both teams were able to play the ball, enjoying the game of football against teams of the same calibre in an environment where they can grow.
