Thousands welcome Santa to Nelson The festive season was kicked off on Trafalgar St with thousands of children and adults lining the kerb to see the annual Nelson Santa Parade. The Nelson parade was first up this year, and falling on December 1, it was the perfect opportunity to get everyone in the Christmas spirit. Organiser Huup Waagen labelled this year’s event as “amazing” and says the weather couldn’t have been better. “It was a beautiful day and we were very lucky with the weather,” he says. “The weather is everything for the parade. If it’s scorching hot then everyone in the parade gets tired. It was all great.” More than 40 floats were entered this year, and they ranged from businesses, schools, churches, musical groups and community events. “It’s awesome and if they’re involved in this community you can always have a win-win. You show your organisation or your business and at the same time you can vent your creativity.” Eight floats would be chosen later this week and rewarded for their originality, creativity and quality. Following the parade, a carnival was held at Trafalgar Park.
Housing NZ U-turn on family dog A “traumatised” Stoke family is delighted Housing New Zealand has performed a Uturn and allowed their pet dog Bella to stay with them. Carley Lissington and her four children moved into a state house in Orchard St three years ago after leaving an abusive relationship. Her children suffered nightmares from the abuse and shortly after moving in an intruder broke in one night

and abused her eight year old daughter. It left the family struggling to cope and one of the children unable to sleep for fear his mother would be killed in the night. Then along came Bella. Carley says she got the rescued German Shepherd and Dobermann cross when she was only ten weeks old and immediately wrote to Housing New Zealand to apply for consent to have a dog. She says there

from Nelson City Council saying there was a complaint of barking and whining that “may have” come from her property. That led to Housing New Zealand being informed and them telling Carley she didn’t have permission to have a dog and she would have to get rid of it. “When I spoke to the lady from Housing New Zealand she asked if we had a dog and I said ‘yes, we’ve had her for a year and a half and we’ve never had a complaint’. Both our neighbours know her really well, there’s been no problem.” She was then told that she’d have to get rid of the dog because she didn’t have permission to get it in the first place. She says she was “devastated”. “I broke down, I couldn’t even speak to her. I just said ‘what can I do to keep this dog?’ I will do anything. The kids were distraught,
they’re looking at Bella and asking ‘are we going to lose a family member?’” Carley was told she could fill out some paperwork and apply to keep the dog but she had next to “zero per cent” chance of it being successful. But after Nelson Weekly contacted Housing New Zealand to find out why the dog had to go, Carley says she received word that they would be able to keep Bella after all. Carley says the decision means the world to her family. “She’s like therapy to us, if we didn’t have Bella, a couple of us just wouldn’t be able to function properly. She’s been so much for us and my family have seen that in me as well.” Housing New Zealand’s regional manager Symon Leggett says they called Carley to let her know she could keep the dog. “We empathise with Carley’s situation and we appreciate the difference having their dog makes to her and her family.”

Bypass noise annoys

A group of Stoke residents whose properties back on to Whakatu Drive say the noise coming from the highway is getting too much to bear and they want the owners of the road to resurface it. They say New Zealand Transport Agency promised the motorway would be sealed with “noise limiting seal” but the latest resurface is the worst it’s ever been because the chip on the road is so coarse. Nelson Grey Power committee member Bob Hancock says the organisation is looking to lobby on the residents’ behalf. “When the bypass was built, residents near to it, on Rosebank Terrace, were anxious about the amount of noise that would come with it. They’ve said they were given assurances that the type of surface to be used was not going to be a noisy coarse chip. It wasn’t and of course the thing was built, time went by and it’s since been resurfaced with even coarser chip seal.” Bob says it’s time the road was sealed in asphalt in line with what is used on other highways around the country. “We do know the cost is considerably more where asphalt is

The aim is that the next time it is resealed, it is done in asphalt.” But that could be a long time coming, given that the life span of the current chip seal is ten years. That is a worst case scenario for local resident Brian Fairbairn who has lived on Rosebank Terrace for the past eight years. He says the noise level has become unbearable since the last reseal and he’s well and truly fed up with the situation. “It’s an absolute nightmare.” His home backs onto the highway and is separated by a few metres of grass bank and a fence. “They are going to have to realise that there is a problem, and they are going to have to accept it and do something about it. is hindering our lives.” Mark Owen, acting highway manager for the Nelson Tasman area for NZTA, says the agency is open to any feedback from local residents on noise issues. “We can appreciate that noise is a problem with these people and we want to work with them where we can. We want to make sure that we are compliant with our conditions, and after that it is whatever we can do to work with the community to mitigate some noise.” Although, he says some solutions would be costly and still might not solve the problem because they are living next to a highway. “We are trying to be a lot more customer focussed. It’s a highway, it’s a transport link for people in that area, but it also goes through a community.”

Waimea Village sold! Andrew Board
nEW lighTS go livE: Nelson’s newest traffic lights are set to go live today. Motorists are advised to take care around the new traffic signals at the corner of Waimea Rd and Motueka St when they are turned on. The road layout has changed so motorists need to take extra care while they adjust to the changes. The traffic lights have been installed in an effort to make the intersection safer. It has historically had one of the worst crash rates in the area. MAYorS’ chriSTMAS: For more than 30 years the Mayors’ Christmas Dinner has been going strong, thanks to the team of dedicated volunteers and the generous support of sponsors. andrew@nelsonweekly.co.nz “Thank God it’s over”. That was the catch cry from residents of Waimea Village on Saturday night as they celebrated buying the village from Michael and Carolyn Wright. The Wright’s eight year tenure as owners and managers of the village ended on Friday and residents were keen to blow off steam and celebrate the end to the gruelling three year dispute. The battle stemmed from annual increases to the monthly levy residents paid, which started from $80 a month at the end of 2010 to a proposed $350 this year. Residents were furious with the massive increases, which they had to pay on top of rates and other normal bills. The residents had other issues as well. They had paid almost $400,000 in a repair and replacement fund that was controlled by the Wrights. The residents felt the money wasn’t there and went to court to try to protect the fund. But all that is behind them now, including this year’s proposed increase to $350 which is already dead in the water. Those 148 of the 172 home owners in the village that bought a share have already seen their levy payments drop to $135 a month and it is expected to drop even further in six months’ time when the costs are reviewed. The remaining lease owners are

The board is comprised of three outsiders and two people who live in the village. It has contracted out the management services, which Kit Maling – the former councillor who stitched the deal to buy the village together – has secured for a year. Residents committee chair Jerry Rowland says the party on Saturday night was a great event. “It was brilliant, everybody was relaxed and laughing and we had a huge crowd. I mean the hall was packed, everyone brought enough food to feed half of Nelson for the next week,” he joked.

Fish oil demand means move for Stoke firm Stoke-based fish oil refining company SeaDragon has given the green light to plans to build a new $6million plant near Richmond that will increase its annual production ten times to 5000 tonnes. SeaDragon is already the largest refiner of fish oils in Australasia producing 400 to 500 tonnes a year for the growing health supplements industry. It employs 10 staff but that number will more than double once the new plant is completed by this time next year. Chief executive Ross Keeley says the new factory will be built on a site near the corner of Lower Queen St and Best Island Rd. The plant will be 1000 square metres “with some height that is required for the processing of fish oils,” he says. “We have raised the funds to proceed and move to the next stage and over the past week we have got close to completing the contracts with the landlord and the key equipment suppliers. It has been a long time in the planning and we expect to start construction in the first quarter of next year with a 12-month construction phase - it should be completed by this time next year.” Ross says SeaDragon is expanding because it can’t keep up with the demand for its products. The company will continue processing fish oil at its Nayland Road site but eventually plans to move its entire operation to the new plant. “Currently we cannot meet demand,” Ross says. “We’re always seeking new suppliers and new avenues.” The new plant will also see a slight shift in emphasis for SeaDragon. simon@waimeaweekly.co.nz presently extracts oils from sharks caught under the quota system in New Zealand waters but will change its focus to higher quality oils from hoki, salmon and tuna once the new plant is operating. “SeaDragon is in a unique position to develop a high-value niche within the fast growing international market for Omega 3-rich fish oils. We are situated at the heart of the New Zealand fishing industry in Nelson, giving us access to abundant sources of hoki fished from the world’s cleanest oceans as well as salmon farmed in the Marlborough Sounds. “Oil from both species is rare and can attract a premium over the anchovy oils that dominate the Omega-3 fish oil market. We also benefit from New Zealand’s reputation for integrity, food product purity and safety.” Ross says they will process the entire fish once the fillet has been removed. He says the hoki will come from Sealord and Talley’s, the salmon from New Zealand King Salmon and the tuna from Solander’s joint venture in Fiji. “We will be dealing with Nelson companies where possible which adds value to the region’s fishing industry,” he says. Ross says this year about 77 per cent of SeaDragon’s sales, which totalled $9million, were to overseas markets. The focus on international markets will continue once the new plant is fully operational.

Broadgreen Intermediate shows off its art A year of student artwork will be on exhibition at Broadgreen Intermediate School until Thursday. Officially opened last night, the biennial spring art exhibition highlights the best work from each student during the school year. Some students have more than one piece, and there was a wide variety of themes and
designs ranging from photography and painting to sculptures and clay. “There are themes like sunsets and silhouettes but they’re all put up randomly. A lot of them are based on artists work,” art teacher Jeana Packer says. “It all depended on the classes as to what they did but I’m really proud of the work they’ve done.”
Jeana says she is often surprised by the creativity and talent of her students, and welcomed the public to check out the artwork between 9am and 4pm in the school hall. It runs until December 5. Local businesses donated prizes to the top students, and the 1000 plus pieces were judged by Nayland College art teachers.

Toxic alga back in the Maitai River
A toxic alga that is deadly to dogs is in the Maitai River, prompting Nelson City Council to issue a warning to dog owners not to let their dogs swim there. The council issued the warning for people to avoid swimming and letting their dogs swim in or drink from parts of the river late last week after the toxic blue-green alga, known as cyanobacteria, was found to be in very high levels. The areas affected are in the lower Maitai from Maitai Camp downstream and the problem is likely to persist over summer. Temporary signs warning people to stay away from the water are being erected at the main entry points to the lower Maitai recreation areas. These will be replaced soon with permanent information and warning signs. The alga is a black or dark brown colour, in appearance, typically with an “oily” sheen and “musky” smell and can be easily seen along the river. Medical Officer of Health, Dr Ed Kiddle, says people have to assume
that where alga is present, toxins may be present. “An early indication of problems in the water is dogs getting sick after eating the alga, however there is a risk to humans if the levels of toxins in the water get high enough. “Symptoms from contact with water may include allergic-type reactions like skin rashes, runny nose and eyes and sore throat. If water with a high level of toxins is swallowed more serious symptoms can occur such as effects on the nervous system.” Dr Susie Wood, from the Cawthron Institute, is working in collaboration with the council officers to learn more about why the algal blooms seem to have intensified this year. The alga has killed more than 100 dogs in New Zealand in the last five years, including one in Appleby last summer. Further information on the bluegreen alga along the Maitai is available on Nelson City Council website.
Experienced Appearance Medicine Providers When it comes to appearance medicine it is important to choose somewhere with experience. In the last 3 years Caci has treated over 10,000 people with Botox®, and every treatment is performed by trained Registered Cosmetic Nurses. Here are answers to questions you may have about Botox® and Dermal Fillers:
Can you get a natural look with Dermal Fillers and Botox®? At Caci, they pride themselves on giving their clients the most natural results possible. In fact most clients say that their friends and family comment on how great they look, but cannot pin point that they have had any treatment. Is it affordable? One of the main reasons clients don’t have appearance medicine treatments is the perceived cost involved. The cost varies with treatment. Caci offer Amerase™ treatment plans to make it easy for people to manage. These annual plans at Caci start from as little as $30 per week.
What is the difference between Botox® and Dermal Fillers? Botox® is used to relax specific facial muscles, softening facial expression lines, however dermal fillers are used to restore facial volume. Local driveways to be made safer Eighty Nelson driveways belonging to state homes will be made “child safe” thanks to a new Housing New Zealand initiative. Housing Minister and Nelson MP Nick Smith made the announcement on Friday, which will see 4000 driveways made safer by June next year in a $30 million programme. New Zealand has one of the highest rates
of child driveway accidents in the world, says Nick and it is estimated that one child is hospitalised every two weeks and five children are killed each year as a result of driveway accidents. “Many of these tragic accidents have occurred at state houses which is why Housing New Zealand has embarked on the driveway safety programme. My hope is
that this programme will inspire private landlords and homeowners to follow suit.” The announcement was made at an Open Day at a state house in Motueka, organised with the help of Roadsafe Nelson Bays. The property is one of the first in New Zealand to be made safer with new fencing and selfclosing gates. “This simple programme focuses on separating driveways from play
areas and installing interventions such as fencing, self-closing gates, speed restriction signs, speed humps, and convex mirrors to prevent driveway safety accidents from occurring,” says Nick. Earlier this year Housing New Zealand inspected more than 13,000 state houses where children under five live. For more information visit www.mysafekids.org.nz.
Nelson police officer gets NZ’s top bravery award
Sergeant Mike Wardle who was presented with a bravery award on Sunday. He is pictured with Tasman commander Richard Chambers. Photo: Andrew Board.
Nelson sergeant Mike Wardle says he’s “humbled” by the rare bravery award he received yesterday for staring down the barrel of a loaded shotgun, giving a wounded officer time to get free. Mike was working in Christchurch when he turned up to a “routine” job. He and another officer were knocking on the doors of a block of four flats to issue a warning to the owners. When the officers got to the last house they smelt cannabis. The owner admitted to smoking it but Mike wasn’t satisfied and asked to come in, suspecting they were growing cannabis inside. That started a series of events that led to officer Bruce Lamb being shot in the face as he opened the bedroom door of the offender, officer Mitch Alatalo being shot in the leg as he escaped by a bathroom window and police dog
Gage being shot and killed. As Bruce lay on the floor with a shattered jaw, Mike stepped over his colleague with a taser pointed at the offender, who had a loaded gun pointed at his head. The taser missed the mark and the offender’s gun twice jammed as he tried to shoot Mike in the face. As Mike quickly reloaded the taser the man ran back into his bedroom, giving officers enough time to get Bruce out of the house and to hospital. The gunman, Christopher Graham Smith, was sentenced to 14 years in prison for the incident and Mike was awarded with the NZ Bravery Decoration for an act of exceptional bravery in a situation of danger. Mike says it was a horrible incident but he was honoured to receive the award.

Airport celebrations ‘bring back great memories’ Ten thousand people turned out for the Nelson Airport 75th anniversary celebrations on Saturday and it was a walk down memory lane for some people in more ways than one. The airport opened its doors to the public on Saturday to share the milestone with the community who enjoyed a full day of entertainment. With classic aircraft on display, DC3 and helicopter rides available, there was plenty for the public to see and do, but it was the flyover by the classic fighters including Nanchangs and an Avro Anson that had Stoke man Harold Ford brimming with anticipation. While Nelson’s aviation history started with the landing of an Avro 504 in 1921, that particular manufacturer brings back fond memories for Harold. A Mark II Avro Anson was the aircraft the 92 year old undertook his training in whilst in the RNZAF during WW2. He says he was pleased to have the opportunity to see an aircraft like it in the sky again after so many years. “It is amazing to see. The Avro Anson was first built in 1935 and the last in 1952. It was the longest serving aircraft during the war.” The flyover by the 1936 Mark I Avro Anson bomber was courte-

sy of local man Bill Reid who has spent the best part of 10 years restoring the plane. Harold says he has been “keeping an eye on the restoration” but until Saturday hadn't seen it in the sky. “It's nice to see the dear old thing going past. It brings back memories. Good memories, of flying.” Harold says while the highlight of the day for him was seeing the Avro Anson in action, he thoroughly enjoyed the rest of the event. “I'm a Nelsonian born and bred, so it's been a really good day, to celebrate the anniversary.” Nelson Airport was constructed, opened and functioning in 1938 with the first commercial flight taking off on November 30 of that year. It has become the fourth busiest airport in the country, rubbing shoulders with bigger centres such as Wellington, Auckland, Christchurch and Dunedin, with 800,000 passengers touching down and taking off every year. Nelson Airport CEO Kaye McNabb says the event was a rare opportunity for community celebration and organisers were in

She says highlights of the open day were the number of aircraft on display. “To be able to get up close and personal is not an opportunity a lot of people get, so it was fantastic. “Having the Avro Anson arrive,
knowing it is the last flying in the world, that we were able to see it was very special.” A formal dinner to celebrate the anniversary, which was held at the Rutherford Hotel on Saturday, night was also well attended.

Alzheimer’s volunteer retires after 25 years Sinead Ogilvie Reporter
reporter@nelsonweekly.co.nz After 25 years of volunteering her time to people living with dementia, you could say local woman Margaret Knight has well and truly earned herself some time out. But at the turn of her quarter century with Alzheimer’s Nelson, the 79 year old may be retiring from some of her responsibilities but she’s still just as dedicated to the organisation as she was when she first started. Alzheimer’s disease is the most common form of dementia, a disease that can affect memory, thinking, behaviour, personality and emotion. Because it is a progressive syndrome, symptoms gradually worsen and it can affect anyone, at any age making it incredibly hard for the family who are left to cope, hence the need for support services says Margaret. “Having a family member with dementia is devastating and it takes a toll on the person who cares for them day to day.” She says support services such as daily day care services and a social, caregiver coffee group amongst many others means caregivers are not only given a much needed break, but they receive educational support and above all a reassurance that they don’t have to go it alone. “It’s a 36 hour day for them, so it is really important that we offer the time out.” Margaret has spent her years giving up her time to the day care group, which offers

Kids raise funds for Natureland A group of students from Waimea Intermediate School have won an award in a national competition offered by the Young Enterprise Trust. The students won $500 towards their community project, as part of the Community Enterprise Competition. Under the programme the students had to plan a project to benefit their local community, in partnership with a not-for-profit or charitable organisation. The team chose to develop a fundraising initiative for the Natureland Zoo Rescue and Rehabilitation Project, aiming to support and promote the awareness and conservation of birdlife, in particular the tui. As one of six teams to be awarded the funds to complete their project, they were able to write
and illustrate a book called “Keri”, which tells the story of a tui that is attacked by a cat, then rescued and nursed back to good health. Group member Estella Brown, 12, who co-authored the book says it was “a nice way to help out and it's good to know we accomplished something,” while Brtiney Terris, 11, says that they “did it for a good reason” and were proud of what they achieved. The book will be sold to locals and visitors to the region with funds going back to the Rescue and Rehabilitiation project, which is currently solely funded by the zoo. Christine Ewers, educator for Natureland Zoo says the funds will be extremely helpful and Natureland was grateful for the students efforts.

Locals needed to enlist for WWI trench
A resilient crowd braved Saturday’s rain to take part in a mass walk from Trafalgar St to Tahunanui Beach. The walk was organised by Soroptimist International of Nelson and Waimea in conjunction with the Te Rito Network, in a show of solidarity to support a zero tolerance to violence against women. Starting from the 1903 Square and walking the length of Rocks Rd to the beach, the group was encouraged by passing motorists who tooted their support. Photo: Sinead Ogilvie.

Just like 100 years ago, locals are being asked to enlist for the trenches. But unlike our ancestors, your life won't be on the line, just a bit of hard work and fun. The Dramatix Theatre Development Trust is calling for enlistments for their annual living history presentation “The Anzac Experience” next year, the centenary of the start of WWI. Organiser TJ Ramsay says men who were involved in their 2012 short film, “From the Uttermost Ends of the Earth” and the three day event itself may like to re-enlist and they’re always on the lookout for people willing to throw themselves “head and heart” into fully immersive, living history. “Next year will have the trust’s biggest trench re-enactment to date,” she says. “It will be our seventh year and we will have the German front line, no man’s land, tunnels being mined, the Anzac front line all culminating in our Flers-Courcellette tribute.” The experience will be based on the battle of Flers-Courcellette, on September 15, 1916. It was the first time tanks were used in an en masse battle plan. Though it had very mixed results, the New Zealand Anzac soldiers were part of it. Requirements for casting will be the willingness to be trained in WWI drill, to have your hair cut short and be prepared to perform
Local people are needed to enlist for a WWI re-enactment next year to help commemorate 100 years since the start of the 'Great War'. Photo: Andrea Seymour. for upwards of six hours a day for three days. Any ages from 14-60 plus. “It’s hard work, yes,” TJ says. “But so worthwhile. We present world-class displays and are gaining national recognition for the Anzac Experience. Some people consider we glorify war but you cannot experience the sights, smells, sounds of war as we do and glorify it in any way. War is filth and disease, it’s sacrifice and waste. Edmund Burke said: 'An event had happened, upon which it is difficult to speak, and impossible to be silent.' But these words sum up why we do this event.” Auditions are to be held Sunday December 15 at 10am. Please contact TJ at dramatix@ dramatix.co.nz or phone Barbara Seymour on 027 698 7124 for more information.

From accountant to children’s book author Nelson accountant Ross Stevenson has taken time out from his day job to write two children’s books which he has just published. Ross has written “a bit of poetry over the years” and when he had some spare time on his hands last year decided to write a book. The end result were two children’s fiction books with an animal
theme, Herbert The Hound Dog and Freddie The Ferret which have been published by US-based print-on-demand publisher Xlibris. Ross says his first book, Herbert The Hound Dog, is about the adventures of a young hound dog who dreams about becoming a tracker. Freddie The Ferret also features Herbert as the young hound dog tries to prove himself
Although Ross is a keen part-time poet he says he never thought about writing a book until last year when he was taking care of his ill wife Lynn. “My wife had a stroke and I stayed at home with her and that’s when I started. It happened by accident really.” When Ross finished Herbert The Hound Dog he decided to submit his work to a discerning

critic and was thrilled when it came back with a rave review. “I gave the manuscript to one of my colleagues to read to their threeyear-old son,” Ross says. “He really liked it so I thought I’d take the next step and publish it.” He has 100 printed copies of each book which can be purchased for $25 by emailing Ross at herbertthehounddog@xtra.co.nz.
New wheelchair charity gets moving in Nelson

A new charity aimed at raising awareness and support for people in wheelchairs was launched in Tahunanui on Friday morning. Let’s Wheel the Wheels is the brainchild of local woman Shala Rashidi. Shala’s son Amir Ayoubzadeh is disabled and she knows first hand the hurdles that families must over come to deal with that, even things like public accessibility. “I think this community needs a little bit more awareness and understanding about disabled people’s difficulties,” she says when asked why the charity was created. “There are places that need better access. Imagine going for a swim on the beach, well how can someone wheel themselves to the water?” Close to 100 people attended the official launch and a variety of ser-
vices and businesses such as NZ Care Group, Idea Services, Pinnacle House, Disability Sport Services, Access Mobility, City Fitness and Maitai School were also in attendance. First term Nelson City Councillor Tim Skinner spoke at the event and told the audience that the launch was “inspiring” and that its founders should be “really proud of what you’ve started”. Shala’s daughter Ahlam Ayoubzadeh says the eventual goal was for an expo to be held in Tahunanui annually. “Next year we want to grab everybody in the sector that does help people with mobility difficulties and disabilities. The idea is people can come here have fun, and learn a little bit and understand there is help out there.”

Sujon expands into pills Tahunanui-based Sujon has expanded its product base by developing a blackcurrant pill. Sujon has watched its blackcurrant powder grow in popularity since it was launched three and a half years ago and it is now stocked throughout the country. The powder is also used by athletes all over the world including the Glasgow Celtic football club and Nelson's top multisport athletes and Giants star Mika Vukona. National sales manager Colin Stuart says the new product was in response to huge demand and it will
mean people will be able to get their blackcurrant intake without having to worry about a messy powder. “We've had really constant growth. About a third of our market is athletes and sports teams, another third is elderly and the other third are people who want to feel good and look after their health." Colin says the pill is part of a wider range of products it is looking to develop. He says two pills is the equivalent to a heaped teaspoon of their powder. The pills are stocked at health food stores around Nelson.

This week you will have seen one of our officers Sergeant Mike Wardle in the news after the New Zealand Bravery Awards were announced. It's fantastic news for us to see our people receive such high honours for their work. Every day your local police go to work and have little or no idea what they might be called on to deal with. Their families live with uncertainty about the danger they might face too and the reality is that over the years some officers haven't come home at the end of the day. The situation Sergeant Wardle found himself in back in July 2010 is your worst nightmare. The officers were attending what appeared to be a fairly innocuous incident when a man turned on them and started shooting. One of his colleagues was shot in the face, another was shot in the leg and a police dog was killed. Sergeant Wardle came face to face with the gunman and by some stroke of luck, as the man aimed to shoot at him his rifle jammed. Armed with only a taser he stood his ground providing an opportunity for the injured officers to be moved to safety. Police officers don't go to work in the morning expecting to be shot. We go to work to protect the public and at times the people we are dealing with are not entirely reasonable. Often drugs, alcohol or mental illness are affecting their decision making. Our role has to be to ensure those people do not cause harm to the wider public or to themselves. In my view police officers make brave decisions and take brave actions every day of the week. It takes a lot of courage to face a car wreck, to intervene in a violent domestic incident or to knock on someone's door and tell them their son or daughter has been killed, but that's what we do. No one should have to go through what Sergeant Wardle went through and it is only right that he is honoured with one of the highest bravery awards in this country. He not only showed great courage, but he also retained his composure under unimaginable pressure. I'm extremely proud to call him a Nelson Bays police officer and this community should be proud too. We have some exceptional people working for you in the Nelson Bays police.

Nelson dog charity turns 5

editorial@waimeaweekly.co.nz Bringing up five years is a “major milestone” for the Nelson Ark, and co-founding trustee Karen Howieson says the future is exciting. “It means a lot. We started out in 2002 with no premises and no funding and it took us until 2008 to get significant funding and find a premises,” says Karen. The Nelson Ark rescues unwanted dogs and pairs them with young people who are perhaps losing their way, transforming the lives of both the young people and the rescued dogs, and Karen says by hitting the five year milestone that it showed the Nelson Ark “had survived”. “A lot of charitable trusts don’t make it but we’ve got community support, we’ve got funders and we’ve got wonderful volunteers that makes things happen.” Asked whether the trust had set goals to achieve after five years, Karen says it is only now that they can consolidate what they had done. “We’ve had requests by five other regions to deliver what we do and that’s pretty significant. I guess that shows it has achieved outcomes, that it works and that it makes a difference.” Looking forward, Karen says it would be ideal to have their own premises, having been currently operating out
Karen Howieson, Jeff Grimmett and Susan Murray-Rifici with Molly, a Nelson Ark dog, at the charitable trust’s five year birthday celebrations on Sunday. Photo: Phillip Rollo. of Stonehurst Farm in Hope. “Susan Murray-Rifici, the co-founding trustee, want a fully functional animal rescue facility but obviously the economic climate of the last few years meant that wasn’t a reality.” But in the short term, the aim will be to extend their programmes they currently offer. “Things are continuing to move for us and 2014 is obviously a year to consolidate and then look at having a fully functional animal rescue centre and not to be just the Nel-

son Ark, but the New Zealand Ark.” A highlight for the Nelson Ark had been an approach by a production company to document the charity on a television series. “That’s still on the table but it hasn’t come to fruition.” A fifth birthday celebration was held at the home of one of its supporters on Sunday. In attendance were funders, trustees and some volunteers. “This is really just a celebration, this is a huge milestone and now we can look ahead.”
A letter of thanks to Nelsonians
The purchase of Waimea Village by village shareholders has taken place and the new company directors and manager, the residents committee and residents are all working together and can look to a very positive future. As chairman of the residents committee I wish to thank the wider Nelson and Richmond community for your huge concern and personal and financial support. No matter where we went we were confronted with kind words of encouragement. Whoever said “a community doesn’t really care about the plight of others” could not have been more wrong. You cared! In particular, I must mention Steve Page and Andrew Board of the Nelson Weekly and Waimea Weekly, our lawyer Warwick Heal, our accountant David Verhagen, our advisor Judene Edgar and the purchase instigator Kit Maling. Each one has made a crucial contribution in time and effort that has determined where we are today. Of even greater importance, they have been with us from the very beginning and have become close and personal friends. However, my greatest thanks must go to the vast majority of village residents their families, friends and my fellow committee members. Their strength and determination to stand up against what they believed to be an on-going injustice was the pivotal factor in all of our actions. To my fellow committee members, no words can express the debt of gratitude the village owes to you. There were a few who tried to faction that unity, they failed! They simply misjudged the older generation. Many in the village may be in their twilight years yet they showed a backbone of determination that only many years of life’s experience can harden. Kind regards, Jerry Rowland, chairman of the Waimea Village Residents' Committee.

There’s nothing nicer than seeing a family business doing well, but when it’s one that’s done the hard yards within the local community for more than two decades, it’s even better. Muritai Motordrome is celebrating 25 years in business, getting locals and their cars back on
high when it comes to personal service. It didn’t take long for Muritai Motordrome to flourish from offering basic repairs into a full service workshop and in 1994 the duo bought a site just down the road and purpose built their own site, which they still operate out of today.

It’s a very special milestone for us.” In 1988 they established their family business as a humble Warrant of Fitness and automotive repair workshop, based out of a shared site with Mobil on the corner of Muritai St. Ever since, they’ve been a constant fixture in central Tahunanui and have serviced local customers with all of their vehicle repair needs. Now, 25 years on their name is well known throughout the industry and they continue to set the bar
Colin did most of the construction work himself with the help of family and staff and Pauline remembers a lot of doubtful tradies at the time who thought it was a bit “farfetched” that he’d complete it. But it still stands strong today and has proven to be the best place for the business to grow into. “They couldn’t believe that he was doing it himself, but it worked out really well and it is still an ideal space.” Now the team is made up of Colin and Pauline, Pauline’s son Niven, Norm, Michael and more recently, Anton, an auto electrician, who are all experienced experts when it comes to cars, of any make or model. Anton has come onboard to allow a wider scope of services, bringing with him all of the diagnostic equipment necessary to

Muritai Motordrome ticks all the boxes when it comes to being a successful family business. Putting in the long hours, going the extra mile and working hard to make it happen the team has formed a great reputation throughout the region. Despite their longevity, they haven’t eased off on the way they do things and are working just as hard today as they did in the earlier days says Pauline. “Sometimes it feels as though the longer we are here, the harder we work. It has been a great 25 years though. The fact that it is a family business is the reason we’ve done well. We wouldn’t still be here if it wasn’t. Having my son Niven on board has been really fantastic.” She and Colin are also pleased to have retained long serving staff member Norm, who has been with them since the early days of the business. While Colin and Pauline have put their success down to great customer support, it’s obvious that Muritai Motordrome is also a product of their good will. Nelson choir stars in local film
Handel’s Messiah will go on stage this month in halls and auditoriums worldwide, but in Nelson the iconic work gets a new treatment, with the screening of local filmmaker Dan Kendrick’s documentary movie Hallelujah! The People and the Music. It features highlights from the Nelson Civic Choir’s 2011 performance of The Messiah, staged at the 100 year old Nelson School of Music, with behindthe-scenes footage and interviews with choir members and the conductor. At that time, Nelson music maestro Pete Rainey was conductor and musical director of the choir and says the opportunity of making a film was not to be missed. “Dan has such a creative talent, I felt that it would be remiss of me not to offer him the chance to create something magical around this – which is exactly what he has done,” says Pete. Dan attended rehearsals and conducted interviews for several months in the build-up to the performance, and says he gained the confidence of the singers as he went. “I wanted to capture real moments of humanity, without being intrusive in any way – no-one likes having a camera shoved in their face, so I wanted the choir to be completely relaxed with me being around.” Dan also conducted interviews with members of the choir, to give viewers an idea of who the choir members

This,
while working full-time on Smokefreerockquest and other events. “I love editing, but it can be a brutal process - if I had kept everything in there that I wanted to, the film would have been four hours long,” Dan said. Keep your car safe this summer and visit Tasman Auto Electrics, the local team of friendly, highly skilled technicians committed to your auto electrical requirements. Air conditioning playing up? Don’t go through a long hot summer simply putting up with it. Tasman Auto Electrics have the equipment and the knowledge to sort it out for summer. Not only can a faulty air conditioning system leave you hot and bothered, but a unit that is not serviced or cared for properly can also cause potential expensive, unexpected and unpleasant problems. It may make strange noises, leak moisture, give off musty smells or worse cause allergic reactions from eye irritation, runny noses, tender throats and asthmatic symptoms. Your car’s cooling and heating systems generate and retain condensation all year round so dust and pollen often settle there, offering bacteria an ideal breeding ground. The best way to stop an air conditioning problem in its tracks is by running the unit at least five times per week to prevent seals drying out. You should disinfect your car annually to protect it against bacteria growth and it should be serviced every summer with a specialist disinfectant treatment. So before you hit the road this summer, visit Tasman Auto Electrics and have the team service and repair your air conditioning unit. Today MTA is the hub of New Zealand’s auto-

Be Safe this Summer
TUESDAY 3 December 2013

Keep safe! Christmas can be a stressful time of year, financially, over eating and drinking and often we hit New Year making resolutions to improve our health. Maintaining a healthy blood pressure is a vital indicator of good health. Keeping yours around 120/80 is the ideal goal for dodging a host of afflictions, including heart disease, a stroke and kidney failure. Monitor your pressure at home Checking blood pressure at home with an appropriate device can give you instant feedback on the benefits of diet and exercise and give you and your doctor a more accurate picture of your blood pressure. This is valuable, because some people experience “white coat hypertension,” in which blood pressure spikes higher than normal when measured at the doctor’s office. Now you can own your own blood pressure monitor.

Because Richmond Panelbeating Service is independently owned Dallas can offer competitive and friendly prices, preferring to provide a budget friendly option for his community and reliable and friendly service for customers all over the Nelson Tasman region. If you’ve come unstuck or had a bit of a bust up, head down to see Dallas at Richmond Panelbeating Service, the tried and trusted business that’s been around for 21 years. Be FireSmart and keep your family and the community safe this summer. Now is the time to be ensuring your property is ready for the hot dry weather to come. Sparks and embers from a wild fire can travel long distances. Embers carried by wind are the biggest threat to your house and property. What can you do? Keep house gutters clean, ensure embers can’t go under the house onto any flammable material stored under there. Have a non - flammable zone around your house of at least one metre, remove tree and shrub branches up to two to three metres off the ground in a circle at least 10 metres around the house. Store the firewood heap away from the house – not against the wall and plant low flammable species within 10 metres of your house. For further information see www.ruralfirenetwork.co.nz or if you would like some advice on how to be FireSmart your property call 544 2441.

Winner of a checkout operator competition, Shelly Hermon, right, with Fresh Choice Nelson owners Veronica Hippolite-A'Court and Mark A'Court. Photo: Andrew Board.
NZ's best checkout operator Swiping your milk and bread has never been so rewarding for Nelson woman Shelly Hermon. Her checkout skills not only win her praise from customers and managers at Fresh Choice Nelson but they’ve also won her $3000 for winning the crown as New Zealand’s best checkout operator. The competition was for all Fresh Choice and Supervalue supermarkets throughout New Zealand and Shelly won the right to compete against the four other finalists from around the country after winning the Nelson, Marlborough and the West Coast challenge last month.
To prove she is the best, Shelly had to correctly use the equipment, make sure all items were accounted for including some “hidden items” hidden under a bag of potatoes, pack the bags correctly and make sure the customer went through the process with the minimum amount of fuss and as quick as possible. Judges evaluated Shelly’s effort and her answers from an interview they conducted after the challenge and awarded her the top prize. She says she was shocked when her name was read out at the supermarket brand’s annual conference in Queenstown in front of 250 owners and man-
agers of supermarkets from around New Zealand. “I was feeling quite nervous beforehand. Checkout side of it I was quite confident but there was still a lot of nerves on the morning but it was more the interview that created the sheer terror going through my head.” Fresh Choice Nelson owner Mark A’Court says the company is big on rewarding its staff and their success and it was “really proud” of her. “It was a good buzz for the night with the award being presented at the big dinner.” Shelly says it was a great experience and she will use the prize money for flights for a trip to Scotland to visit family.

GENERATIONS OF NELSON Brought to you by Marsden House
MARSDEN HOUSE Marsden House in Nile St was built with a £6000 bequest from Miss Frances Marsden of Isel and was opened in 1923 by her brother James Marsden. Built of Nelson Pottery bricks, it was in danger of
being demolished as an earthquake risk. When the Day family bought it in 1968 for their Funeral Home they reinforced the structure meaning one of Nelson’s few historic brick buildings has been preserved.
Generations of Nelson presents Snippets of History $15 per booklet, volume one and two available. $25 for the double-disc CD. Available at Marsden House or The Radio Network.

Getting from A B Getting from A to B is an important part of our day to day life, whether you travel for business, pleasure, necessity or leisure. We are always on the move and always finding new ways to get from here to there. So this week Nelson Weekly celebrates the best people and products to help you get moving, with this special feature on getting from A to B. The Weekly spoke with local businesses that specialise in helping us get around and about, or servicing the things that do. When it comes to getting from A to B, Access Mobility make it easy. If maintaining your independence is important to you then it is important to the team at Access Mobility too, so from indoors and out, they have the mobility solution for you. Whether you need a walking cane, a pair of crutches or the stability of a walker to get moving, whatever your requirements are, Access Mobility have a wide range of equipment from the world's best brands to choose from. They have a variety of wheelchairs, walkers, Powerchairs to help you move about your home, and a wide variety of mobility scooters that are transportable across any

terrain, from short distance through to long distance travel. They also stock a range of folding walking sticks, canes and crutches with comfortable handles. Access Mobility is also an authorised equipment repairer, so you can see the team for parts and servicing both onsite and off, with the convenience of a pick-up and drop-off service. Access Mobility are the one stop shop for mobility products that will enhance your lifestyle and keep you moving. Talk to the team at the Access Mobility showroom on the corner of McGlashen Ave and Croucher St in Richmond. The opportunity to drive Bowater Honda's 2013 2.4N Sport CRV to Golden Bay was perfect - including sealed & gravel roads, the steep Takaka hill plus several long straights. As a woman used to smaller around town cars, I found the CRV not nearly as big to drive as it looked - driver comfort was fantastic, from heated leather seats, to auto-sensor lights & wipers to the independently climate controlled air-conditioning for both front seat passengers to the accommodating coffee cupholders! Knowing there were multiple airbags, superior braking & stability control systems & the reassuring reversing
camera display gave confidence & a sense of safety. Easy foldable back seats (great when balancing shopping or children), plus a walk-through back seat floor make the CRV ideal for family. I found the road handling very impressive, easily cornering on the open roads & going exactly where pointed. I felt the 2.4L had enough get up & go when required & was so easy to get in / out of, with a full 3 year unlimited kms warranty... I'm happy & would fully recommend! Tyres and More, the name says it all. From bumper to bumper Adrian and the team will look after you and your car. Getting ready for summer and keeping you and your family safe while out on the road starts with quality tyres, with the right tread that will go the distance. Tyres and More have a great range of quality tyres to suit any budget and you’ll come away knowing your car has safe tyres that have been professionally fitted and balanced. Adrian and the team pride themselves on doing the best job for the best price. They’ll always run any work required past you first, so there’s no surprises about what your car needs, just the best options at a reasonable price. For tyres, alloy

New rules not good for tenants: Re Nelson Weekly's headline, State house review ‘good’ for locals, on 26 November. Good? No! It’s a blatant attack on vulnerable State house tenants under the draconian new tenancy review law introduced by Minister of Housing, Nick Smith MP. Maurice Alach.

Also to the medallists in Indoor volleyball and beach volleyball yestereday. Shay Wilson. 1080 not the way: 1080 should be banned, there are other ways to control the pests. DOC still do drops where possum numbers are low and say they are targeting rats and stoats but they dont' go for 1080. I'm a hunter and it's sickening to stumble across a deer near a creek that has had a slow painful death because of 1080. It's not humane. (Via text).
Pen pal a top pal: I went to school with her she is a such a kind person. Good on her. Simon Scowen.
Reply to the one comment from last week's Your Voice: You say 1080 needs to continue while admitting it isn't great. Ground hunting by trapping is a safe solution, I am not in dreamland, if you put a bounty on anything you will find people who will want to make a living out of it. New Zealand's bush isn't harsh to those who feel at home there. New Zealand's bush is home to native birds, insects and lizards. It is not home for tonnes of 1080 to be dumped annually. Glen James.
Volleyballers are tops: Well done to local volleyballers who performed well at South Island secondary school junior champs last week.

I have seen him working while lame and with loose and missing shoes. His overall condition based on his body score, muscle tone and behaviour indicates he is receiving the minimum sustenance required to live and perform his duties and/or he has underlying health issues. He is not starved or beaten and does not have wounds - authorities have no powers to protect the animal from the life inflicted upon him. After the incident reported above which was witnessed by members of staff where I work, I took the opportunity to check Barney before the vet and SPCA arrived. He was indicating an injury in his mouth/jaw as reported. His legs had swelling above all four fetlock joints which was unrelated to the incident. He was fully shod at the time but the shoeing was poorly completed with no consideration allowed for basic mechanics and balance of the hoof. The shoeing was causing excessive strain on his tendons, quite likely the reason for the swelling although that would also be a result of constant work on tar seal. Nelson Weekly reports that Barney had been "spooked". Following Barney’s collapse he was witnessed being unharnessed and helped to his feet by two men – this is not how a healthy horse or spooked horse would behave. In the same situation, a healthy and/or spooked horse would have instantly struggled to get to their feet and the injuries would likely be more severe as a result. In a normal situation the immediate concern would have been keeping people around him safe, not people having to help the horse up. Yvonne Watson.

Mapua’s Cheryl Young was the quickest women on the day beating many men with her 1.36.33 for 13th overall. Following her was Tessa Holland, of Christchurch, and Haeleigh Albon. Two overall records were broken, both in the 10km run as Paula Canning clocked 40 minutes flat shaving 49 seconds off Britta Martin’s 2010 time while Daniel Busch’s 36.49 exertion erased almost a minute from Trevor Voyce’s best back in 2011. Alan West and Lyn Smith were the half walk winners while 10km honours had septuagenarian Bevan Cook calling for all organisers of Nelson athletic events to reward his new age bracket. Nelson Events have placed this on their agenda at their annual general meeting especially with RunMahana attracting more than sixty over 60s who with ongoing fitness regimes plus mod-

Simon Mardon has a taste for the Classic Hits RunMahana half marathon course. It’s certainly not flat with the undulations unforgiving but that’s the challenge of the double lap Moutere course and one that has certainly been to Simon’s liking. He won the same event in 2009 and 2010 and on Sunday he made it number three. But it wasn’t oneway traffic as Graeme Taylor looked likely to relegate the younger Nelson College teacher to runner up. Both were battling it together on the first lap but just into their second circuit and it was all over for Graeme. The last year has seen him on the sidelines after suffering plantar fasciitis. Rest and recovery saw him return to good form but this time it’s the other foot and a nagging Christmas present that no one really wants in their life. With Graeme gone, Simon “only” had Kim Hogarth to contend with behind him but had enough of a margin to grab victory by 25 seconds upon reaching the Woollaston Estates finish

with
Nelson Dawnbreakers Fishing Club This weekend is looking a good one to be heading out. If you’re after some pannie snapper try Rabbit Island around the 8 metre mark. This seems to be where the pannies are, and go in closer if nothing is happening until you feel the paddle crabs grabbing your baits, then you know you’re in the right place. If you want bigger models head out to the deep around the 20 metres plus mark. The big boys are spawning now and will be gone soon. Longlines are the easiest way to get a horse mackerel but perseverance with a stray line will get them if you spend enough time trying. I’d recommend pilchards or whole salmon smelts with little or no weight. Use very light main line, 10lb-15lb with a 20lb leader, fluorocarbon. Gurnard are in abundance and Delaware Bay is the go to spot for them. Make sure you drift around with flashers or slow jigs, carrots love attacking a moving target. There are still large schools of kahawai in the bay which are easy to target with spinning lures. A few rat kingfish have been caught and the odd big one has been seen by divers, so now is a good time to
get that kingi gear sorted out and give it a nudge. The smaller kingfish are now arriving also along the Boulder Bank and spat farm so target them in the morning on an incoming tide with Rapala X-Rap 30 lures and you will have the best chance. Not much to report on D’urville Island and Stephens Passage apart from good sized coutta to be taken, help yourselves to them, they are in good numbers and easy to hook up. Expensive jigs are normally the best, they are magnets to them. French Pass is still very slow with all the fish up around Nelson at the moment. Inner sounds are finally starting to get some fish in there but has been very slow and you will be best to fish later at night or early in the morning until everyone goes back home. Again the pillies are the way to go on stray lines and heaps of salmon burley. Kenepuru has had reports of a number of fish being caught and some of those have been big double digit fish. Remember photos last longer than fish so only take enough for a feed and put some of the big ones back for your grandkids.

Power Angels to take on the world Power Angels Celia McMillan and Aimee Hayes are amped and ready for their first ever international competition. The two Richmond women have been competing in powerlifting for 16 years between them and this week’s Commonwealth Powerlifting Championship at the Vodafone Manukau Events Centre is easily their biggest with 500 competitors taking part from across the globe. Powerlifting is a strength-based sport that consists of three attempts at maximal weight on three lifts: squat, bench press and deadlift. Because there are just three attempts, competitors strategize which weight to enter in, in order to be competitive and to be successful in all nine attempts. Both Celia, who is in the under 52kg weight class, and Aimee, who is in the under 63kg weight class, will be competing in the three lift section, where the winner will be the person with the highest combined total. Celia says she was “fairly even” across all three disciplines but probably favoured her benchpress. Her personal bests are; squat 140kg, benchpress 93kg and

deadlift 140kg, while Aimee’s are; squat 152.5kg, benchpress 77.5 kg and deadlift 152.5kg. Aimee says there will be plenty of strategizing to see what her opponents are lifting. “They might be chasing you or you might be chasing them so you need to take that into consideration.” Each competitor had to post their nationals total so everyone was well aware of who the top lifters are. But even knowing what her opponents are capable of, Celia kept quiet of her own aspirations. “We’re humble and we don’t want to count out chickens before they hatch. Every competition your goal should be to PB, even if that’s by 2.5kg, it’s still a PB. At least personal bests, but who knows on the day.” Aimee and Celia say they have worked really hard to be selected and are excited to be representing New Zealand at this event, and are supported by sponsors Accessman, Health 2000, Fusion Fertilizer, Evolve Gym and Fresh Choice Richmond. The Commonwealth Powerlifting Championship also doubled as the Oceania Championship and runs from December 4 until December 8.

Sports star back in the game after injury
Rebecca Kersten is not invincible after all. But in terms of sporting talent, she’s the closest thing Nelson College for Girls had to Super Woman. Rebecca was just 16 years old when she made her debut for the New Zealand women’s touch rugby team – that’s right, the senior national squad. Shortly after, Rebecca was selected in the New Zealand Under-18 women’s hockey team and had attended national rugby sevens camps with the possibility of being in Rio come 2016. But a torn ACL – and a shoulder reconstruction during rehab – forced her hand and the multi-talented sport star had to withdraw from the hockey squad, ruining her goal of representing New Zealand in a second sport. Looking back now Rebecca can see positives in the injury, but the ACL tear took her out of all sport for 12 whole months. “I was playing touch and due to weak muscles my knee just popped out and I tore my ACL. I didn’t think it’d be that bad but I was just hoping for the best because we were leading up to [touch rugby] nationals at the time,” she says. After two weeks of increased swelling, reality kicked in and Rebecca knew she was in for a lengthy stint on the sidelines. “The ideal rehab time was between nine to 12 months. From then I’ve still seen the physio every week. I wanted to fast track my rehab so I was going to the gym every day and because I was having my shoulder reconstructed too I wanted to get as much work in before I was going to be in a sling.” Spending the entire year on the sidelines is almost unthinkable for any athlete, but Rebecca used it as a chance to give back, coaching the NCG first XI hockey team and the Under-15 Nelson Bays touch team. Although diving across the try line is a no-go because of her shoulder, Rebecca is finally back to full fitness and she sees the New Zealand Secondary School Touch Rugby Championship this weekend as a chance to climb back to the top after such a frustrating year. “I know that I’m not invincible anymore. I used to think I was and that I could do anything but it’s certainly changed my perspective and how I value what I have. But I’m pumped and that’s the same for all of the girls. We’re really young, half of the team is Year 9s, but we’re training five times a week and we’re looking really strong. I believe we can do it.”
