Spokesperson Karen Clark is expecting at least 2000 people to visit Founders Park during the duration of the fair, which runs until Sunday afternoon.

“They say 1000, but I’d like to hope we’d get 2000 or 3000. It looks like it’s going to be a good year again,” she says.

“We’ve been putting the books into banana boxes and we probably had 200 more banana boxes full of books this year than last. There’s just thousands and thousands.”

This year’s fair started with a hiss and a roar on Saturday morning, with many people queuing at the door, and car parks near the windmill entrance hard to come by.

Steve Halliday of Stoke was at the fair within the first hour and says he’s been several times before.

“I like to look for the old books and I’ve

bought a few in the past. I don’t go to the library anymore because I just come here and buy all my books for the year,” the Stoke man says. “Today I’ve bought the first edition of War and Peace.”

Gillian Farrell of Dovedale had also been to the fair numerous times, saying she had been six years in a row.

“The variety of books [brings me back every year]. You can always find something you weren’t looking for at the beginning. I tend to look for science, gardening or humour, but I just look around and pick up things I like.”

Many of the other visitors have come from across New Zealand, including Jackie and Peter Smart who make the trip from Christchurch every year. They say they’ve made great friends from the book fair, who they hoped to see again, and that they stay in the region for nine days while it’s on.

The Founders Book Fair is open from 10am4:30pm daily, until Sunday June 10.

NEw BoXING PRESIDENT: Nelson man Steve Mitchell was last week voted in as the new president of Boxing New Zealand. He will lead a new executive including vice-chair Andy Powell. Steve has previously been a national selector, coach and manager, and says he’s “looking forward to some positive change” with the organisation.

DRUG ChARGES: Forty-eight people across Tasman will be facing charges as a result of the annual cannabis recovery, Operation Lucy. This year 5266 plants were recovered, along with a further 17kg of dried plant material. Police also seized firearms and ammunition, along with $10,000 in cash.

The second was another house fire, this time in Sovereign St in The Wood. A mother and her teenage daughter were taken to Nelson Hospital with smoke inhalation after the daughter had flicked a cigarette butt through the window, but it blew back onto the curtain and caught fire.

They had working smoke alarms and Craig says they did the right thing by closing the door and calling 111, meaning nearly 90 per cent of the house could be saved.

just last week, started at Waterblaster Solutions in Wakatu Estate, and affected a handful of other businesses in the same premises. The cause is yet to be determined.

Craig says it was a concern that two of the three fires had been started by a cigarette. “It’s always a concern to us and people need to get their house keeping in order. If they’re going to smoke, smoke outside.”

Another concern was the amount of people calling the fire station to report a fire.

“We’re not here all of the time so if they do see a fire they need to ring 111. That’s something people need to realise.”

It’s been a busy two weeks for the local fire service with three major fires, two of those involving cigarettes.

Thankfully no one has been injured, but with winter officially underway and more people turning their heaters on and getting the fire cranking, the public need to be smart in order to prevent further emergencies.

Senior station officer for Nelson, Craig Davies, says it’s been a busy time for an area that is generally “pretty fire safe”.

“The level of fire safety education is pretty high in the Nelson area but we need to make sure we keep it high,” he says. “People certainly need to be pretty vigilant in winter time. Everyone is locked up inside with the fire going. We have a heater rule to make sure everything is a metre away, which is another good one to remember.”

The first of the three major fires in the last two weeks occurred when a 73 year old Stoke man fell asleep with a lit cigarette in his hand. He managed to get out of the house with just

Greenie designs ‘sustainable scooter’ Nelson’s Ross Mathews is a joiner and a greenie, so it made sense that when he decided to design and build a motorised scooter it would be powered by electricity and made from wood.

And now the eco-friendly design seems to be catching on with Ross receiving a lot of interest in the custom-made scooters which he has just started producing in his workshop in Nelson. Ross has only made “just over a dozen” of the Spectrum Scooters and has already sold half of those, mostly to buyers in the North Island.

“I used to ride motorbikes so I’ve always been interested in that sort of thing, so I decided to design a

scooter that fitted with a sustainable theme. I make the frame out of imported plywood that comes from sustainable forests and it’s powered by a lithium ion battery which last about two hours and recharges in four.”

Ross says he buys the bike parts, such as wheels and brakes from Village Cycles, as well as the electrical components but makes the rest himself. It takes around three days to produce a scooter which with the battery which is carried in a small back pack weighs 19kg.

Ross says the bikes have a top speed of just over 20 kilometres an hour and are classed as a twowheeled recreational device so can be ridden either on the footpath or road. Riders are not required to wear a helmet. “Some people think that 20 kilometres an hour isn’t very fast but it’s fast enough on a scooter. It’s ideal for commuting on the cycleways around Nelson and you can also fold it up so you can put it in the boot of your car and take it anywhere,” Ross says.

Ross also makes the scooter without the electric motor that can be used as a kick bike. The electric scooter costs $1699 while the unmotorised version costs $499.

Stolen cross found at beach A memorial cross stolen on the 20th anniversary of a deadly car crash has been found at Tahuna beach.

The cross belonging to the Tasker family went missing on the 20th anniversary of the crash that killed Ross Tasker. His daughter Karina Tasker was devastated at the time and appealed to the public for help to find it.

“My four year old daughter found a piece of wood with the name Tasker on it. I thought it was the name if a boat.”

Steve got in touch with a very happy Karina who confirmed it was a piece of the cross.

Karina says she will keep the broken cross and has pushed ahead with plans to erect a steel cross where the old one once stood. “I’m so happy, it means a heck of a lot to me.”

Big turn out for chook show

Feathers, fowl and farmyard smells sum up the Nelson Poultry and Pigeon Association show at Hope hall.

Club president Peter Lyall, says the purpose of the show is for people to get together and compare their breeds of poultry, and to find out if their breeds are up to New Zealand show standards.

“We had a good crowd of people coming through. It’s really good to see that we’re getting a lot of support from the public and exhibitors.”

Peter came out on top, with his birds winning the best fancy bantam and the best game bird, which were also the two largest sections of the day.

Next weekend eight Nelson poultry breeders will be heading up to the New Zealand national show in Palmerston North with high expectations for their birds.

Musicians prepare for chamber music contest The next generation of chamber musicians will be on display this Wednesday when 13 ensembles, involving 58 students, perform in this year's Nelson-Tasman district finals of the New Zealand Community Trust Secondary Schools Chamber Music in the Baptist Centre in Nelson.

Contest organiser Clare Monti says groups of three to eight musicians will be given 15 minutes to perform between one and three pieces of music. The performances will be judged by Wellington pianist Richard Mapp with groups also having a chance of qualifying for the national finals.

However, Clare says the national qualifying standard is extremely high and it is a number of years since a Nelson group was selected for the finals. Clare was a member of a group that fin-

ished runner-up in the national finals in 1993.

"We have some very good young musicians in Nelson but the winner of our district contest doesn't get automatic entry into the national finals. They select the top 12 groups from around the country so usually there's quite a few from Auckland - the standard is very, very high."

Clare says the groups, some of which are made up of students from more than one school, have been rehearsing for weeks for the contest.

The contest is presented annually by Chamber Music New Zealand and is the only nationwide chamber music competition for secondary school musicians and composers.

It starts in the Baptist Centre at 193 Bridge Street at 6pm. Entry is free for students and $5 for adults.

Teacher makes gift baskets for others During the past few months some early childhood teachers around the country have received gift baskets, vouchers, magazines subscriptions and other goodies to recognize hard work – and it’s all thanks to another early childhood teacher, Rebekah Cook.

Rebekah has been an early childhood teacher since 1997 and says it’s an extremely important job, but one that can be emotionally and physically demanding.

She is a firm believer that a happy teacher equals a happy child. So late last year, she started an initiative called Happy ECE Teachers, which sends gifts to deserving teachers to thank them for their contribution to early childhood education in their community.

Rebekah, who works at Early Learning Centre in Richmond, is the sole funder of the initiative, and nominated herself for the Pride of New Zealand Awards in a bid to raise the profile of Happy ECE Teachers, and to send more “thank yous” around the country.

“Teachers can have the best resources, the best facilities, but if they’re not passionate and motivated, then the best outcome for the children is not going to be achieved,” she says.

Rebekah says early childhood education is an industry she’s very happy to be in. “I just love seeing the children growing, developing and learning new skills every day. I just want to make a difference in families’ lives.”

But it was an interest in the wellbeing of teachers and its Waimea Weekly link with the well-being of children and families that started Happy ECE Teachers. “I was trying to find a tangible way I could recognise the hard work teachers do. It’s just my way

Demand too much for cat trust: People seem to find it easier to put them down, shoot them or leave them to fend for themselves. Makes me sad in saying this - the SPCA wouldn’t help me with a neighbours cat that was stuck in a tall palm like tree on my family’s property as it wasn’t my cat therefore not my problem. We ended up calling the fire department who were more than happy to help. I also have another sad story about the SPCA but won’t put it up here.

people trying to give away kittens on the garage sale sites on Facebook. De-sex your pets. Stop getting free kittens where you will just let them breed instead of desexing. Go to the SPCA and get one that is de-sexed, wormed and micro-chipped. No wonder we have a crazy man in Parliament saying we need to register cats or start killing strays that wander into our yard.

And instead of giving up your pet when you move, find a house that will allow you to have a pet. Pets are meant to be part of the family. Pets are meant to be for life! You don’t give them up just because your living situation changes. Julia Lines.

It is not actually the SPCA’s job to take in your animal that you decide you don’t want anymore, they’re there to prevent and protect animals from cruelty.

Some SPCAs around the country don’t take in any animals from owners at all, they only take strays. If your situation changes it’s your responsibility to re home your animal the SPCA is an absolute last resort.

People act like it’s the SPCA’s responsibility to take their animal. It’s not. If they agree to take your pet they’re doing you a favour, one they have no obligation to do. It’s not hard to do the right thing and advertise your animal on Trade Me or elsewhere and find it a good home. Jazmin Torrance.

Police search for wanted man Armed police continued their hunt for wanted Richmond man Terry Jones, searching an Upper Moutere property on Friday.

Police have a warrant for his arrest and information to date suggests he is still in the Nelson area.

The organiser of a youth skateboard art competition hopes it will attract new, young artists to participate.

“It’s a fun thing to do. Rather than giving someone a canvas, we’re giving them a skateboard deck that they can do absolutely anything with,” says local painter and mother Donna Allfrey. “They don’t have to be a skater or an artist. I just want them to use their imagination.”

With the support of Creative New Zealand, Donna

has been given 90 skateboard decks. Participants will first put their design on an entry form, with selected entries from Nelson, Tasman and Marlborough then given a skateboard deck to put their artwork on. “We’ve got the Refinery Artspace outer gallery to put their work on display in September.”

School choir rocks 'da Richmond Mall' Cutting through the hustle and bustle of evening shoppers last Thursday were the voices of the Nayland Primary School choir.

This year’s Richmond Mall Rock da House has now seen six schools perform their own mini concerts, every two to three weeks in the Richmond Mall food court.

This is in the lead up to the final three performances that are to be hosted by Motueka on August 18, 19 and 20.

cq says although she was unable to watch the Nayland performance she has heard great feedback from customers as well as retailers. The next Rock da House mini concert will be held on June 5 at 6:30pm in the Richmond Mall when Garin College and St Paul’s choir will delight the public with their voices once again.

These mini concerts will continue for the rest of June, every Thursday evening so drop in on your way home to hear some of the community’s talented youth.

Police report with Area Commander

Police regularly receive reports from people in rural areas who have been targeted by thieves stealing stock from paddocks. Mostly the animals will be shot on site and then the best bits of the carcase taken and the rest left to rot in the paddock.

This is a really hard crime to police because the thieves are operating in a vast rural environment and Police Officers simply can't be everywhere all of the time so the chances of being caught in the act can slim. We regularly have to rely on rural networks keeping an eye on activities in the valleys and back roads of our area.

Up until recently the penalty for someone caught poaching was a maximum $500 fine.

The value of the meat or animals being taken could easily be twice or three times that cost.

The good news for farmers - and the warning for poachers - is that the penalties under the Wild Animal Control Act have been reviewed and made significantly harsher. The maximum penalty is now $100,000 or two years in prison.

I sincerely hope that sends a clear message to poachers that their actions could have very severe consequences and I can assure them that Police will actively pursue any information in regard to alleged poaching.

Despite a constantly shifting market, they remain a dominant force within the motor vehicle industry and are planning on maintaining this position with innovative thinking and a proactive attitude towards business decisions.

In the last 12 months The Car Company has seen several changes, including the relocation of their head office from Vanguard St to their Rutherford St property. Rutherford Street now incorporates three premises, the commercial and recreational centre, their head office and the car dealership.

Managing Director Shane Drummond took the opportunity to purchase the Rutherford St property, which has not

The trip not only gave Ben experience in buying stock but provided The Car Company with an additional 95 cars in preparation for their birthday sale, which began on Friday. I am not a great fan of a garden that is completely native, but this week I visited just such a garden and I haven’t stopped thinking about it.

I have always been of the opinion that natives and ornamentals made good bed fellows. Each having their own characteristics of form and foliage. Ornamentals offer a diverse variety of floral shape and colour. And this can continue throughout all the seasons, depending on what you choose to grow.

So there you are, enjoying foliage colour which can change as the season progresses, lovely floral displays which can turn into attractive berries, and so on. In the native department there is again foliage colour that will change, there are also berries that follow flowers, and seed heads on some of the grasses can be quite magnificent.

So when I visited this garden my eyes were opened startlingly wide. The garden started off as being totally flat, with a stream running through it, as straight as a die. Bruce, who created this garden wanted to make contours and even small hillocks. So, at some considerable expense, soil was brought in by many a truck load, and gently sloping wide pathways were created.

The width being determined by enough space for two people to walk comfortably side-by-side.

This enables pleasant and easy conversation, without the stop-start manoeuvring involved with a narrow pathway.

Nelson set the pace The Nelson College first XV rugby team look on track for a home semi-final – which might seem crazy, with nine rounds still to play.

It’s pretty perfect reading for the new-look side, with five wins from five games, including two key away victories against heavyweights St Bede’s College and Marlborough Boys College.

There’s just one other undefeated team left in the competition, Christchurch Boys High school, and Nelson will host them in two weeks time. First they have Lincoln High School at home this Saturday.

Team manager Peter Grigg says the Christchurch Boys High School match will be vital, as the front runners start to eye a home semi-final. “It’s always nice to take the travel factor out of it and play in your home turf.”

Footballer thriving in US college system Phillip Rollo Reporter

editorial@waimeaweekly.co.nz It’d be hard to convince Erik Panzer that anywhere other than the United States is the perfect pathway for a top athlete and someone wanting a top education.

When it comes to increasing his football skills on the pitch, and expanding his knowledge off it, Erik believes it’s USA all the way.

The 20 year-old is back in Nelson for a month after completing his second year at Quinnipiac University in Hamden, Connecticut, where he studies psychology and plays centreback for their soccer team, the Bobcats.

He will be one of three guest speakers at Sport Tasman’s US College Sports Scholarship Information Evening this Friday, where students, parents and coaches can learn more about life as an athlete in the American college system.

Erik, who will be joined by middle distance runners Craig Lautenslager and Josie Wilcox on Friday, had achieved nearly everything he could as a teenager in New Zealand football. He was a regular for Nelson Suburbs in the Mainland Premier League, led Canterbury United to the ASB Youth League title, and made his ASB Premiership debut for Canterbury United.

But the US had always appealed to him as a place where he could extend his football career and get an education at the same time.

“My parents had always stressed that education was important and I always understood why. Injuries happen and even if you go pro at the age of 18 you can always get cut. So it was a very appealing option, the fact I had a US passport helped too,” the former Garin College student says.

their best season ever in 2013/14, reaching the first round of the NCAA Championship. Erik was gifted an NCAA ring to remember the team’s efforts, but despite losing to tenth-ranked University of Connecticut, it was a moment he’s unlikely to forget. “It was a place no one in the school had ever gone; no one in the programme had ever gone. They sent up five busloads of supporters from school, we had a good 500 fans and there were 3500 people in the crowd,” he says, describing the biggest

football game of his young career.

Erik says his Bobcats team played to their game plan perfectly but still couldn’t overturn their much-fancied opponents, losing 2-1. “We kept on fighting but we just couldn’t break it. That’s where the journey ended but it was our first time ever going into the national championship draw. For the school it was huge. It was a moment that all students live for.”

Erik says the entire season last year was a highlight for him, and he thrived in a back four that had some of the best defensive stats in the country. "We were number seven in the country for clean sheets and number 13 in the country for goals against, and those are things we can hang on to."

Now back in Nelson for a few more weeks, where he is playing for Nelson Suburbs, Erik put his hand up to help speak with young Nelson athletes about his US scholarship and how they can follow a similar path. "People need help sometimes, they don't know the process. I just felt there was an opportunity to inform others that have the potential and there are so many opportunities out there. We're just giving an insight into the younger generation to hopefully help them on their way."

Erik says each athlete has a different story, living in different cities, playing different sports, and gaining their scholarship through various ways. "It's just something they can hear and want to pursue."

Nelson's title hopes slip

Saturday's loss to Waitohi means that Galbraith Nelson appear unlikely to retain the Bayleys Tasman Trophy.

However, co-coach Kade Heke believes they can still take out the Car Company division one competition, as they close in on a semi-final spot.

"I think on our day we can beat any team, we've got the backs and the forwards to do it," he says.

Kade says Saturday's 33-15 loss was a classic "game of two halves", with Nelson unable to contain the dominant Waitohi forwards in the first 40 minutes.

"We played a lot better in the second half. They just dominated us in the first half with their roll-

ing maul from the lineout. We struggled to combat it really," he says. "Their forwards are definitely their strength and they play well as a unit."

Waitohi remain the only unbeaten team left in the Tasman Trophy, and with Wanderers and Marist drawing 13-13 at Trafalgar Park, they already have one hand on the trophy.

Having won the Tasman Trophy twice in the past two years, Kade says the team was disappointed to miss out this year.

"Definitely gutted. We gave it everything though."

Nelson will host Marist on Saturday, with the match likely to be at Trafalgar Park, kicking off at 3pm.

Home course golfers dominate tournament

It was three Greenacres golfers who dominated the Taylor Timbers Waimea Golf Championship on their own course, with Tom Dasler, Henry Ludbrook and Natalee Read the big winners over the weekend.

Natalee, representing Greenacres, was named ladies champion, winning by four shots to card a two-round 164. She was also the overall net winner, her handicap bringing her score down to 142 over the 36-hole event.

In the men’s section, Tom, also of Greenacres, won the championship with a score of 145 over two rounds.

“It was a fantastic weekend. We had 90 entries, with most of those coming from all around the Nelson and Tasman region,” she says.

“We were so lucky with beautiful weather and the course was amazing. It was a very successful tournament and everyone really enjoyed it.”

Schools march towards nationals

The road to nationals is proving a lot tougher for the Nayland College first XI, despite beating Waimea College on Thursday.

Nayland, Nelson, Waimea and Marlborough Boys College are chasing just two spots for the New Zealand Secondary School Football Championship, and the four schools will spend the next few weeks competing against each other to find out who the two qualifiers will be.

Nayland, at their weakest in the last decade, managed to win the game after they put one goal past Waimea shortly after their goalkeeper was shown a red card, even though Waimea dominated most facets of the game.

In the round’s other match, Nelson beat Marlborough 2-1 during their annual exchange, held in Blenheim on Thursday.
