The update nobody wanted Jacqui Rawson Reporter

jacqui@waimeaweekly.co.nz

The Waimea dam project has blown out a further $29 million as contractors deal with fallout

from Covid-19 and “geological curve balls”. The total cost of the dam now sits at $158.4m more than double the estimate of $75.9 million that went out for public consultation in 2017.

Waimea Water CEO Mike Scott presented his six month update last week saying that “geological curve balls have been thrown at us that needed to be addressed and have led to part of the cost increase”.

Waimea Water is a council-controlled organisation responsible for the construction, operation and maintenance of the dam, and say they will secure the region’s water supply for the next 100 years.

Mike says that besides the challenges there has been excellent progress in the last six months. The dam is 50 per cent complete. The embankment is now coming

The update nobody wanted from PAGE 1 up out of the ground, the rock wall is 7 metres high and is proceeding well. And more importantly he says there have been no injuries. “And we’ve pretty much completed the mechanical and electrical design that wasn’t designed at the time of funding,” says Mike. The Covid costs of $11.2m, include a provisional allowance for future Covid costs that Mike says they are beginning to see emerge, particularly around the supply chain and bringing equipment in from overseas. Mayor Tim King says the council expected an increase particularly in light of Covid impacts and knew there were

challenges, although not the scale of them. “A budget provision had been included in a draft of the Council’s long term plan of $8m,” says Tim. The Council in their longterm plan meeting last week have agreed to raise funds for the shortfall of $21m which, if agreed, could have an impact on ratepayers of a 0.1 per cent increase. “The project on the ground is progressing really, really well and the challenges we are facing at the higher level shouldn’t detract from the pride the hundreds of members of our community that work out on the dam every day should feel,” says Tim.

First vaccines have been given Jenny Nicholson Reporter

jenny@waimeaweekly.co.nz

Dean Hardman was happy after receiving one of the regions first Covid vaccines on Monday, knowing he had taken a big step to keep his household safe. A few vaccinators went first as a rehearsal. Although those administering the vaccine give vaccines as part of their usual work, they wanted everything to run as smoothly as possible, and it did. “We are quite lucky to be first. There is a risk when we go onto ships, although often those on the ships have been in their own bubbles for months. It’s more that we don’t want our family to get sick – that is the concern,” says Dean Hardman. In deciding who to vaccinate first, port workers were consulted and it came through clearly that they wanted their households to be vaccinated with them. About 50 vaccines are being given daily to workers and their households. Vaccines are not being given to anyone under 16 years old as they have not been proven to work in that demographic.

Just arrived, the all new

Dean Hardman after vaccine. Photo: Jenny Nicholson. Testing will continue as there is not data to show people who have been vaccinated can no longer pass on Covid. It is likely that health workers who meet patients before they are screened for infection will be vaccinated after port workers. This group would include ambulance officers, receptionists and staff in the emergency department. “Who is the next most vulnerable is always a compromise between who would be sickest if they did get it and those who are more likely to get it,” says Nick Baker. He says we are sitting on a

knife-edge so need to support efforts to eliminate the spread, and that may affect which communities receive the vaccine first. The vaccine can not be given at the same time as the yearly flu injection. “There will need to be a pause between the flu injection and the covid vaccine,” says Nick. But Nick thinks that it may be possible for the vaccine to be given in cars in a similar way to last year’s flu clinics as long as there is the ability to observe patients after receiving the vaccine, and the ability to manage any adverse reaction.

New fire truck for Brightwater Jenny Nicholson

Angelus Hut now has more detailed and accurate weather information. Photo: Jenny Nicholson.

New weather data to help safety in National Parks Jenny Nicholson From yesterday, there is more accurate and up-to-date weather forecasting for those taking a trip into the mountains in the Nelson Lakes National Park. The new hourly and six-day weather forecasts are very localised and will provide more accurate predictions to help visitors make informed decisions. The forecasters use the latest technology and have accuracy to a 1.5 km radius where previously it was to 4 kms. “Weather on opposite sides of

a mountain range can differ radically,” says Steve Taylor, Department of Conservation (DOC) Director of Heritage and Visitors. Wind and river flow forecasts will be available, and possible weather hazards including strong winds and low visibility will be identified. A daily video animation will be accesible. Mount Owen is also one of the 70+ sites to have the upgraded forecasting. The work is a partnership between DOC and the National Institute of Water and Atmospheric Research (NIWA).

Brightwater has a new fire truck, replacing the previous 28-year-old one. “The truck has power steering, almost twice the water capacity, is four-wheel drive, is safer and comfier too,” says principal Rural Fire Officer Ian Reade. While around 30 per cent of callouts are to fires, they also co-respond with St John to motor vehicle accidents, cardiac arrests and

lift assists. And just recently they had a canine rescue. A dog went into the Aniseed river, realised the current was quite strong so swum to the other side. His owner was unsure how to get the dog back, so the firefighters were called to save the day. The truck’s yellow colour indicates it doesn’t have breathing apparatus, meaning the crew attack fire from the outside. They work closely with Richmond and Wakefield crews who can enter burning buildings.

“We have more of a focus on vegetation fires, so Richmond and Wakefield support us with those fires,” says Ian. The firefighters acknowledged the support they get from family and from workplaces to help get them out the door when they are called on. Currently it’s all men at the Brightwater Brigade but they are keen for women to join them, acknowledging that diversity would be valuable at call outs.

Nelson Matters I love that Nelson is such a safe place. We have for years had one of New Zealand’s lowest crime rates. My worry is the recent growth of gangs and the escalation in violence and drug crime. Police report gang numbers have grown nationally by 46 per cent since 2017 from 5343 to 7825. The fastest growth in gang numbers in the country was in our Tasman Police Dis-

trict of 178 per cent, from 68 to 189. The Nelson District Court records gang members held in custody on serious charges more than doubled from 52 to 127 in 2020. I look with nostalgia on the days when Nelson’s only gang was the Lost Breed. They occasionally caused a ruckus but were relatively benign. The Lost Breed was taken over by the Mongrel Mob several years ago

and has subsequently grown into three chapters of Aotearoa, Whakatu and the Barbarians. We now have 15 gangs, including the particularly nasty Hells Angels, Nomads, Outlaws and Bandidos operating in our region. I have for the first time as an MP been told of Nelsonians leaving our region due to gang violence and intimidation. The Labour Government’s response to the threat from gangs

has been soft and inadequate. $100 million has been spent on removing 61,000 firearms from law abiding hunters, but only one weapon has been removed from gangs. Labour has repeatedly blocked Nationals proposed firearm prohibition orders that would ban gang members owning firearms. I questioned the Commissioner last week at Parliament’s Justice Select Committee on the new

instruction to front line police not to pursue a fleeing vehicle even if it had 3kg of meth. Gangs know they can now just do a runner. We need to back our Police with tough laws and new tools to relentlessly pursue Nelson’s newly established gangs. If we do not, our problems with violence and meth will just get worse. Advert.

Tasman District Council allowed access to 290 metre, 92,000 tonne ship in need of repairs

last week The Taharoa EOS, a 290 metre 92,000 tonne iron sand carrier came into Tasman Bay to undertake minor repairs. “While we have a responsibility to assist a ship in need, we were very conscious of the responsibility to ensure it did not in any way pose a risk to our environment, either

while anchored or through the repairs that needed to be made,” says Tasman Harbourmaster, Dan Cairney. We enlisted the services of the appropriate marine surveyors and engineers to report on the extent of the repairs that needed to be undertaken. The unladen Taharoa EOS was on its way from Singapore to load iron

sands off Waikato’s west coast when the need for repairs arose. Richmond Mall this week For customer safety, rest area seating has been removed and play areas will remain closed under Alert Level 2. Seating in the food court has been reduced

to maintain social distancing measures. Cleaning staff will ensure tables in the food court are cleaned and sanitised between each use. Signage in the food court reminds shoppers to keep two metres apart. Stores may need to manage numbers of customers entering the store to meet health and safety requirements.

Chance to check out volunteer options Jacqui Rawson A Volunteer Expo taking place on the 6th March will provide the opportunity for those considering volunteering the chance to find their niche. According to the World Giving Index, 41 per cent of New Zealanders are volunteering their time in the community. It’s hoped the Expo will help increase that percentage because there is a high demand for volunteers in the Nelson Tasman community. “This event gives our special Nelson Tasman community a chance to really see what is involved when offering their time and what opportunities are available for them out there says organiser, Jo Nicholls. It also provides the opportunity for the community organisations to connect face-to-face with visitors to the Expo and prospective

People thinking about volunteering can have a chat with other volunteers currently working within the specific area they’re consid-

ering. “If someone is going to give up their time to volunteer, they need to be passionate about where they volunteer says Sue. “The Expo is a chance for a great talkfest. People have a chat and if they like the sound of us they’ll come and join us,” says Menzshed’s, George Inglis.

Healthy food prices continue to rise Jenny Nicholson

Making homes warmer in Waimea Village and beyond Jacqui Rawson Over 20 homes in Waimea Village are going to be a lot warmer this winter thanks to free insulation installs. The insulations are due to the Warmer Healthier Homes (WHH) programme and Absolute Energy. “We help meet the shortfall between the government provided grant and the full cost for local families,” says Warmer Healthier Homes, chairman Leeson Baldey. A government programme covers 90 per cent of the costs but that still leaves a shortfall out of the reach of some homeowners. Local organisation, WHH was set up to meet that shortfall.

The involvement of TDC has meant WHH have been able to provide insulation for 141 homes in the region. That’s 106 more homes than in the previous 12 months. “For every $100 TDC provides there’s another $900 from the government grant coming into the region,” says Leeson. It’s more than insulation it’s better health and lower hospital admissions, he says. “The guys went out of their way, even digging a trench under the house, to make sure it was completely insulated and all at nil cost to me,” says Waimea Village resident, John Borley. “A little bit of ratepayers funding has a benefit that goes a long way,” says Richmond councillor, Kit Maling.

For the past 25 years, grocery prices have risen in January, and this year was no exception. However, grocery price trends have varied from the norm over the past year. Traditionally, prices are down at the end of the year, but in December 2020 there was an increase. This was despite fruit and vege prices falling 12 per cent in the three months from October to December compared to the previous three months. Even with the end of year drop in fruit and vege prices, the year saw an overall increase of nine per ecent in fruit and vege prices. “We are paying probably $70 to $100 more this year for our groceries. We have just gone into healthy eating and veges are sometimes dearer than meat,” says local shopper Zoe Harris. Zoe said that after rent, power, petrol and food there wasn’t a lot of money left over. “In 2020, prices were high for a variety of crops, including potatoes, courgettes and

Rachel Boyack MP for Nelson

The Government has put in place Alert Level changes to contain the latest community outbreak. Auckland is now at Alert Level 3 and the rest of New Zealand at Alert Level 2. These settings will be reviewed this weekend, following a seven day period. Everyone has a part to play in stopping the spread of COVID-19, so we can get back to Alert Level 1 safely as soon as possible. We need people to come forward quickly and early to get tested - even if they have mild symptoms. Remember, the symptoms are fever, sore throat, temporary loss of taste or smell, difficulty breathing, runny nose, new or worsening cough, muscle pain. The Wage Subsidy will kick in across the country along with the Resurgence Support Payment. There are also payments available for businesses who have employees who need to self-isolate due to having a COVID-19 test. More information on support available for businesses and employees is available at www.covid19.govt.nz. Front line workers at Port Nelson and their families have started to receive the vaccine, with the Pfizer/BioNTech vaccine roll-out beginning here in Nelson on Monday this week. This is a significant step forward in our fight against COVID-19. We’ve beaten COVID-19 before and if we work together and follow the health guidelines, we can do it again.

Local 12-year-old sets up business Jo Kent With Children’s Day this weekend, Thomas Rollinson from Richmond is certainly a local lad with a lot to celebrate. The 12-year-old entrepreneur started his own skate ramp business when he was just 11 and now he’s secured a shop deal and has launched a hire party package to boot. Thomas makes the skate ramps at home with the help of his dad, Al, and grandad Bob Sinclair. “When Thomas said he wanted to make and sell ramps for kids to use at home, we thought it was a great idea,” says dad Al. “Both Bob and I have worked in the building trade, so we had a few joinery tools to help get him started.”

Using New Zealand timber, the ramps are for skateboarding, scootering and occasional BMX-riding. The ramps are of such a high standard that skate shop Cheapskates has just agreed to sell them in store. When coming up with the brand name, Thomas chose to fuse his own surname with that of his grandad to come up with the name AirRoll. “I wanted to make sure all three of us were included as it’s something we’ve worked on together,” says Thomas. “I’ve sold 30 ramps online already,” he says. “And recently came up with the kids’ party hire package too.” Costing $100 for a full day, the package includes eight ramps of varying sizes. For more info, visit AirRoll Ramps on Facebook.

Play to generate Alzheimer’s discussion Jenny Nicholson Wakefield Country Players’ latest production, The Father, centres on an elderly, flirtatious man who is losing his mind to dementia. The Father is supported by Alzheimer’s Nelson Tasman and there will be an open forum after one performance for the audience to talk with the cast and members of the Alzheimer’s society. “It’s difficult material but funny and entertaining, and also tragic,” says director Peter Verstappen. He said that anyone over a certain age will have thought about dementia, and a lot of people still feel very uncomfortable with it.

Andre, played by Hugh Neill, is consoled by a woman played by Alix Rimmer. Photo: Supplied. “We all carry that deep fear of dementia,” he says. The cast is hoping that the play may open discussion, as is dementia advisor Heather Lackner. She says there is still stigma because people

ing as an advisor when her father was diagnosed with dementia. She said that experience taught her to encourage carers to believe in themselves. “Carers are the experts. It’s really important that we know what people who are close to us like because one day we may have to be their voice,” she says. Lamingtons to celebrate excellence Jenny Nicholson Reporter

jenny@waimeaweekly.co.nz

It’s tradition at Waimea College for all students who achieve an excellence endorsement to be invited to share lamingtons and savouries with principal Scott Haines. This year there were around 78 invited. Although Shenal Herath was in Year 12 last year, which is usually level two, he achieved excellence endorsement at level three. “I think he has a Super-Man cape

on underneath his uniform,” says Scott. Shenal was born in Sri Lanka and lived in Malawi before coming to New Zealand three years ago. His dream is to work at NASA. In 2019 Piper Riley achieved level one excellence endorsement from her course work during the year. She said it was a lot harder going into last year’s exams knowing she still needed excellence credits. Claudia Mark’s marks were another step toward her dream of working for metservice.

2021 - a great year to volunteer After its successful debut event last year, ‘Nelson Connects’ Volunteer Expo is back in 2021 and is coming up on the 6th of March at Annesbrook Church. NB: The organisers say the event will be going ahead on Saturday, with Covid-19 Alert Level 2 measures in place. There will be over 30 organisations represented on the day, covering everything from historical interests and environmental issues to humanitarian needs, and will appeal to a broad range of visitors. Nelson Connects is a collaboration with Volunteer Nelson

and Age Concern and is funded by Nelson City Council. All the exhibitors are community organisations, and the purpose of the expo is to recruit volunteers and network with the community. It gives the exhibitors a unique opportunity to interact and connect with existing or prospective volunteers and enables the organisations to strengthen and raise their profiles with them. The expo is ideal for people that are wanting to give back and get involved in their community. Sometimes the concept of ‘volunteering’ can make people a bit nervous. ‘Will it require too much of my time?’ One expo organTHANK YOU! Heatherbell’s Orchard – a story of three generations Marg Farrelly In 1922, Gwynne Heatherbell and Alice Thawley were married. Their first child was born in December 1923. Gwynne applied for the position of manager at an orchard in Fruitlands, between Roxburgh and Alexandra in Otago. Their daughter was only six weeks old when they moved to take up the position there. The orchard was short of packers so Alice found herself working full time, the manager of the orchard paying a girl to look after the baby during the day. After two years the family returned to Nelson because Gwynne’s father developed pneumonia and was very ill. Gwynne managed to gain employment on an orchard in Eighty-Eight Valley near Wakefield, working for a Mr Gotley (sic). When their daughter was aged five, the family moved again, this time to an orchard at Waimea West where Gwynne had responsibility for overseeing nine workers.

George died in 1944 at the age of 92. Noel Heatherbell, the eldest son of Gwynne and Alice, was born in 1934, growing up and working on the orchard alongside his father. Gwynne, ably assisted by Noel, developed the orchard to the point where it became regarded as a

It was about 1929 when George Heatherbell bought the 25 acre, run-down orchard property in Hope. During the daytime, Gwynne worked at Waimea West, and at night packed apples for George in Hope. Alice did the same. Their daughter slept in the car. This arrangement became unsustainable and the family made yet another move, this time to Hope. Gradually the orchard was tidied up and became viable and so it was that Heather-

Crombie Lockwood A smarter way to get your insurance sorted. In 2018, Crombie Lockwood undertook client research and discovered that time-poor small business clients preferred to deal with their broker over the phone and by email – too busy to meet with their insurance broker in a traditional faceto-face appointment during the working day. In response, Crombie Lockwood developed Smart Business Broking, a specialist desk based team of brokers dedicated to the needs of small and micro businesses. Here in Nelson the Smart Business Broking team is: Laura Cresswell, Rachel Foulsham and Sharlene Friend, and working together, they all share a passion for helping clients. Abbey Smale takes overall win Peter Gibbs Thursday wasn’t the most attractive of evenings, as the number of swimmers (91) was the lowest in 12 seasons of the Port Nelson Sea Swim Series. Yet for those who were there it was a nearperfect evening. Not too much current, calm seas, no glare or sunstrike and far less argy-bargy at the start with reduced numbers in each wave. The course around the Nelson Harbour circuited most of the boats anchored in the basin for a 1650m swim. Tasman Area School teacher Hayden Squance is growing taller every day. He only has to lie down in the water and he has a body length on most people. He used this to good advantage for the first 300m or so, heading south parallel to Rocks Rd, before Nelson College student Oxford Bayley picked up the pace. Hayden tried the usual strategy of sticking on his feet, but Oxford was off, making a break which he held to

the end, finishing in 18 minutes and 56 seconds. Luke Kelly was also distanced, with the first three finishing at 30 second intervals and Garin College student Abbey Smale a similar distance back in fourth wrapping up the win in the women’s section. With 14 swims completed, the bestof-11 series winners are starting to emerge. With a maximum of 110 points from 11 wins, Abbey Smale has nailed the overall women’s series. In the age groups, Hayden Squance (M20-29), Ben Marshall (M30-39), Terry Bone (M40-49), Christina Harris (F50-59) and Ben Van Dyke (M7079) have also scored maximum points. Emily Chadderton has the short series (almost) wrapped up, but she moved up to the long course to take second place ahead of fellow 13-year-old Eva Ellena and Christina Harris (who is more than four times her age - isn’t swimming wonderful?). woman home. Thanks to Emily going long, things became far more interesting in the short swim series. After placing second in nearly every race, Lilly Claridge moves to the top of the short series points table with her win ahead of Lucas Bell and Steve Bryant. After 11 swims, Lilly now has 100 points and leads. Emily has only done 10 swims, and has 97 points, so just needs one more short swim success to move ahead and win the best-of-11 series, with three more swims available until the season ends on 18 March. Noah Brehaut has dominated the male section of the short swim, but with 11 wins from 11 races, he has the maximum number of points possible, so he’s also turned his attention to the long swims, leaving Lucas Bell to dominate in the latest swim. Catchball now competitive Jacqui Rawson What was an unknown game two years ago, Nelson Bays Catchball now has a League. Set up as a social sport to encourage people to give sport a go, they now have a growing competition league. “We’re keen to keep the sport growing and encourage people to set up their own groups to play in the competition,” says Nelson Bays Catchball chairperson, Muriel Ronen. A team is made up of six players and the indoor court is like volleyball. But instead of volleyball handling, you throw the ball between team members and over the net for a point. The age range is from 18 to 65 years old.

Anne Kautschur and Muriel Ronen. Photo: Jacqui Rawson Levels of fitness are less important, instead the best skill is using strategy to find the gap in the court. A year-round sport, it’s a great way for women to get out and active in a supportive, fun en-

vironment, with the chance to get competitive in the league if it appeals. They play at Badminton Hall, Gladstone Road, Richmond, from 6 pm – 7.30 pm Fridays and the first game is free.

Keep marching on Jo Kent

It may be a lesser-known sport, but Team Excelsior is keeping marching alive in Tasman. Made up of under-12s, the girls meet twice a week to practice. Coach Kauri Marsden says, “Marching is getting more popular. We’ve had a few new members this year.”

Kauri handmakes the costumes herself, including the hats, along with her daughter Lily. “It’s always such a struggle to glue the feathers on. My house is sometimes covered in fluff for days!” Marching first originated in New Zealand in 1930 and has evolved into a hugely competitive amateur sport. “It’s a great way for girls to

be part of a sports team, especially if they can’t do netball or soccer, either for health reasons or just personal choice,” says Kauri. “It’s low impact and helps girls build self-confidence and discipline as they have to work closely as a team.” For more information, visit their Facebook page Excelsior Marching.
